I remember that when everything was happening with Noah Schnapp, so many people were saying that ‘he’s a white coloniser!’ ‘he’s clearly European!’ and ‘how are we supposed to think he’s indigenous to the Middle East when he looks like that?!’ They were screaming so much about he couldn’t possibly be from the swana region due to being pale, despite the fact that… wait for it…
Noah Schnapp is a Moroccan Jew.
The exact the same thing happened with Jerry Seinfeld too, despite him being a Syrian Jew.
But what this tells me is that so many American and European leftists fundamentally do not understand what North Africans and Southwest Asians look like. They do not understand that many Middle Eastern groups are pale, many Middle Eastern groups share features with Europeans— I mean, the Middle East literally borders Europe, did you not expect us to have similarities? This stretches back to the ancient world too. We know that in Yehuda there were gingers, as shown by King David*. Iirc, studies on Rameses the second’s remains show that he most likely had an olive tanned complexion and reddish-blondish hair, similar to a European Mediterranean look— which makes total sense seeing as Egypt is literally a Mediterranean country as well
It’s not just Jews. Persians, Kurds, Assyrians, Copts, Amazigh, Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula**, all of these ethnic groups are incredibly diverse in their features, even without any significant genetic influence from other areas. You cannot just project American and European black and white concepts of race onto the Middle East and act as if that is reality. The world is not split into pale people in the north, brown people in the middle, and black people in the south, and if you genuinely believe that then you really need to look at some pictures of the groups that you’re claiming to be the defender of. Please. I’m so tired of this bullshit lol
*I know that the historical evidence for David is shaky at best and we’re not sure if he was real or not (I personally believe it’s a King Arthur sort of situation where there was a real person here that got turned into legend), what I’m trying to say is that if the Ivrim could have a figure like this who was ginger, then the Ivrim clearly had gingers. Nobody come for me please
**not adding other Arabs because there tends to be genetic mixes with other groups, and my point is about how even without distinct genetic markers from each other, middle easterners groups can turn out with a super intense variation in appearance, especially skin tone
#like it’s funny to me when I see Ashkenazim say that they’re pale because that’s the European genetic mixing or whatever#cause like there’s plenty of people on my Iranian Jew side of the family that are pale as shit#my mum’s cousin is half of our Iranian Jewish subculture and half Persian Jewish and she’s light as well#that doesn’t mean they have that much European dna it just means that the Middle East is much more to the north than people expect lol#antisemitism#leftist antisemitism#I could tag this as racism or stuff but I think that would attract Hamasnikim lol#also I think a lot of this twisting into a pretzel on what people in North Africa and Southwest Asia look like#comes from trying to ‘prove’ that Jews aren’t Middle Eastern because apparently we’ve overfilled the maximum ‘swana pale quota’ for them

around the great mosque of xi'an, originally built in 742, and one of the largest historical mosques in china. chang'an (xi'an's old name), then the capital of the tang dynasty, had a large west asian community to the point that emperor xuanzong permitted the construction of the mosque. unlike most contemporaneous chinese buildings, which are oriented north-south in accordance with feng shui, the great mosque is oriented to the west, towards mecca.
#china#architecture#interior#details#worship#muslim#nmenam#my posts#xi'an seems to have a lot of presence from west asia and associated religious history#there were a lot of persians or at least persia-influenced people in that part of the world back then#the specific arabic script they use is perso-arabic script too#i wanna read more about it#(i wonder if there were jews in xi'an...there probably were there were tons of jewish traders across asia at the time)

Also I am. Constantly forgetting how fucking funny Hunter is. We never give him enough credit for how funny he is because his life is so fucked up but I swear 90% of his lines are just bit after bit after bit. He's not even trying either. Anytime he actively tries to make a joke it falls flat but if you just put him in a Scenario he'll find a way to be so over invested and yet out of touch/at odds with whatever's going on. He's so autistic
#the owl house#ramblings of a lunatic#i forget hunters character voice A Lot#plus the most recent ep is always whats most clear in my mind (so rn that's ftf) and he's obvs much more angsty in that one#idk ppl credit thanks to them as the first time Hunter was like happy and silly#but i highkey think asias was the prelude to that. like i think the events of that day are so vivid and special to hunter#precisely bc it's the first time he's interacted with witches his age in a non hostile or strained way#it's the first time on screen we see him have fun doing something that isn't deranged#yeah whatever souls are made of his and willows are the same. but more importantly her gus and the rest make him laugh#that's important for the guy canonically having the worst day of his life Every Day#part of why huntlow appealed to me initially was that it was hunters first taste of like. normal teenagedom#not the romance with willow (cause that's barely an undercurrent in asias) but flyer derby and hexside in general#and that's part of why willow and later gus r like. his safe space#and thus why it's so significant that he goes out of his way to protect (keep them safe) too#anyway enough hunter thoughts for tonight. i love him but this isn't my Brand

#toh hunter#toh fanart#the owl house#toh#these are like....the two pictures of hunter in existence before asias#besides like. the EC propaganda posters. or press photos. all with the mask on#the “badge number” comment in hunting palismen made me think that probably hunter did have some sort of id before inheriting the gg staff#no name of course. i doubt anyone knew hunter's name before luz#belos reserved badge numbers 0-100 for his grimwalkers. he was starting to sweat about it too like#hunter pops out of the ground a few years before the eclipse is supposed to happen and belos doesn't THINK he'll go through 16 more#but like. who knows how many child clones of your dead brother you'll need ya know? man's under a lot of stress

Whenever someone says "This would kill a Victorian child." Or "This would kill a medieval peasant." I have to think about Machete. Would he... would he survive eating a Dorito?
.
#I've never had doritos myself so I have no point of reference#I think they sell them here nowadays but it's a fairly new thing and I don't eat a lot of chips#they had spices in the past but they were extremely expensive#I think most of them had to be imported from South/Southeast Asia#India in particular#few could afford such luxury goods but if you could serve people spicy food it was a mark of wealth#so historically a lot of upper class dishes were extra flavorful#potentially to an overpowering degree maybe#it was a status thing#a dorito wouldn't kill him but I've mentioned he secretly tends to favor somewhat bland and unthreatening foods#that won't set off his sensory issues#he'll eat the various nutmeg cinnamon clove saffron ginger creations people serve to him because declining would be a massive faux pas#but it's not an enjoyable experience#answered#anonymous#give him some light broth and a little bit underseasoned chicken to eat with his watered down wine

older books on like art and history are interesting artifacts in their own right bc you learn not just the content of the book but also the prevailing attitudes and thoughts of that time, what was socially acceptable, common parlance, etc. which are all easier to notice from the distance that time offers. you can't play down past attitudes toward certain people and places when you have the physical evidence, and i like reading these books bc i get to pretend to argue with the author. like i'm reading a book from 1973 about 'historic india' and the way the author writes about 'indian culture' as both a monolith and as something so foreign and different from any other culture on earth is fascinating lol. it echoes so many present day sanghi talking points and even praises the caste system out of some ass backwards attempt at not being racist. it also does that thing where 'hindu' culture is positioned as being fundamentally different and separate from 'muslim' culture, which is so wrong for so many reasons
#i love the way white people try to describe the cyclical nature of time and karma and dharma in south asia its always funny#even ones that get pretty close are still like wellllll thats not quite what that means....#a lot of stuff i feel really gets fucked up in translation

"Uh- I'm Arnold. Bennett. It's profoundly difficult to get your lifes works and studies accepted if your name isn't... yes, oh! Are you a fan of moths, sir?"
NEW RDR2 OC!! a reclusive, clumsy entomologist and bug collector; cooped up in his study of uniformed clutter
#i drew him on such a tiny file 😭😭DIDNT THINK ABT IT im so used to drawing less detailed big headed trolls BWHAHA#I'm still figuring out where he's from and his lore!#he's definitely from south asia... I'm leaning towards him originally being from Sri Lanka#which I BELIEVE was called Ceylon at the time under british rule#im looking forward to spending some time on researching this further before coming to any conclusions. for now his backstory isss vague#and practically nonexistant#he now lives in Saint Denis! if he was in game his study would be accessible#likely through a greenhouse similar to Algernon's encounters yknow!!#some stained glass windowss lots of lamps and dark academia inspo... also agitha twilight princess inspired#he's very socially awkward and clumsy#used to being a recluse and submitting his findings and works semi-anonymously through his name but without a face#so when he encounters arthur or john OR the player if in online he's VERY surprised and even clumsier#but extremely enthusiastic to share his passions#LISTEN I'm playing rdr2 for hours almost every day but I can't tell if insects are studyable#IF it was a feature THIS MAN!!! would be the one to send you on missions related to it ESPECIALLY online#ANYWAY!!!! these r things that have instantly come to mind for him!! I hope I can develop him a little more with time and research#red dead redemption 2#red dead redemption#rdr2#rdr#OC#original character#protagonist ocs#I NEVER POST MY OCS ON HERE i need 2 start posting them again#OH AND OBVIOUSLY he changed his name at least professionally... idk if it was legally or he just went around signing off as a different nam#unless someone asks for his original name he probably won't give it#i need 2 adjust his sideburns because theyr meant to be all white with some line definition but i forgot abt it 💀

What are your favourite kinds of Japan content? Or alternatively, what are your least favourites?
I'm a huge aph Japan fan, and I'm always curious abt this stuff.
Hmmm, well honestly I could talk all day about this topic LMAO but for your sake and mine I'll keep it brief and focus mostly on two especially grating depictions i dislike. I have some posts queued up down the line for how i tend to see japan so feel free to ask me about that when i get around to posting it ehehe
"Polite, cute, shy, quiet" japan depictions reallllly don't work for me. Like it's one thing to say that Japan is a reserved guy who puts value in having good manners and doesn't want to come across as rude, but it's another to turn him into a wilting flower who's easily dominated by louder personalities and turns into a side character. Besides it falling into ur typical trope of the "diminutive east asian who needs to be taught by their loud non easian (usually white) partner how to stand up for themself and live life a little," I think it's just patently false, both canonically and historically lmao. Like hima has called Japan a stubborn old man before, and history will tell you that Japan is nothing if not resourceful and very very proud, lol. He may bite his tongue, but I imagine that hes not someone who easily gives up or submits or at least without a fight 😂
Germany-Italy-Japan trio, or "Axis" trio, depictions never go over well for me, lol. I'm of the mindset that you can't really divorce them from their history in WW2, especially if you're going to call them the Axis, like lol the least you could do is call them something new. Furthermore, Geritapan depictions in my opinion are terrible with tokenizing japan as the sole character of color/east asian in the group, but the Worst Geritapan Depictions as of late are shipping gerita with japan off in the cuck chair?? I'm not saying we need to give Japan bitches (because lord knows he doesn't deserve any) but wow, congrats, you made your only East Asian man an emasculated yellow guy who just pines and copes over a white love interest who dgaf about him <3 a win for diversity!!!
anyways, if you're going to ship gerita but treat japan like this, i would rather you ship germany and italy together like a normal person and leave japan out of it 🙏
#ask#lyresbird#aph japan#hws japan#look at what the hetalia fandom has made me do. defend japan as a chinese person#i could talk forever and ever and ever about this topic#but my general advice is to ppl that before you praise canon u should carefully consider the fact that hetalia is written by a japanese guy#in the late 2000s-2010s and theres a lot of things abt the canon are indicative of his biases esp w how east asia is handled#and before you praise fanon#be equally critical of east asian stereotypes in the west and the way east asians r flattened into support roles for the western nations#and cant exist outside of their relationships to the west

the papier-mache walls of the shrine in kanqah naqshband sahib in srinagar, kashmir, built in its current form in 1633. the complex is dedicated to bukharan baha' al-din naqshband, who founded the naqshbandi sufi order, and is a mausoleum for one of his descendants. the shrine is a site for ziyarat as it contains what's said to be a lock of the prophet muhammad's hair.
#kashmir#interior#details#worship#muslim#nmenam#papier-mache kashmir#religious tombs#my posts#i forgot to mention in my post on kanqah-e-moula that papier-mache was brought over to kashmir by the same guy who brought#over islam. which is why papier-mache walls in kashmir are in muslim places of worship a lot#of the time. and also in iran and central/northern south asia there's some papier-mache decals on muslim places of worship too iirc#but the papier-mache is mostly on items because it's easier to do it on items than whole walls#kashmir is well-known for papier-mache stuff#the fancy technical term is ''lacquerwork'' but i already used papier-mache so
