More art from my lost souls AU! I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. This time, it’s what a cover would look like if it were a comic!
Frisk’s design has already changed a lot in the few months I’ve had them…

Aversa's mention of an ‘Exaltling’ was lost on him, but Papyrus could respect her confidence in her abilities! He too fancied himself a master of his own magic. He had honed his powers extremely well, able to keep such a tight control over it that he could cause his attacks to deal a highly specific amount of harm to their target. Among other things! Truly Royal Guard material, if you asked him!
“HAVE NO FEAR! THEY DON'T CALL ME THE GREAT PAPYRUS FOR NOTHING!” No matter how insistent the pegasus might be on not being befriended, he would be persistenter! As persistentest as he needed to be until he won her over!! That was what worked for Undyne, after all! “I'M VERY SKILLED AT NOT DYING.” So skilled at it that it's never happened even once!
Blissfully unaware of the human's... potentially murder-y temptations, Papyrus responded to her slew of questions with his usual enthusiasm.
“MONSTERS ARE MADE ALMOST ENTIRELY OF MAGIC! REMOVING A BODY PART... PROBABLY WOULD NOT BE GOOD I THINK.” He didn't remember ever experiencing such a thing before, so he wasn't entirely certain what would happen. And if he was being honest, he didn't particularly want to find out! Separating a limb from his body and thus severing its connection to his SOUL... Seemed like a Very Not Good idea.
“BUT IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A DEMONSTRATION OF MY MAGIC, THEN WHO AM I TO REFUSE SUCH A CURIOUS SOUL?”
Papyrus struck a very cool pose, and right at that moment, five massive bones burst out from within the earth behind the skeleton. The attacks even towered slightly over their summoner (who was incredibly tall by human standards himself).
While not leaving his pose just yet, Papyrus opened one eye to steal a glance at Aversa's expression and gauge her reaction. Was she impressed? He hoped so!!!
After another moment, Papyrus dismissed the attacks, and the bones vanished into thin air. He brought his hands to his hips, and laughed, “NYEH HEH HEH! WHAT DO YOU THINK?” She thought he was cool, right?
Then, he stepped forward, with his fist outstretched toward Aversa. Another bone formed in his enclosed hand, its ends peeking out from the sides. It was significantly smaller than the attacks from his earlier demonstration (thus making it a much more manageable size), and took on a golden hue, rather than the white of the previous bones.
“AND THIS... IS MY GIFT TO YOU!!” Papyrus turned his hand so that his palm faced upward and then opened it, allowing Aversa to take the bone. He held no malice in mind while forming the object, so it wouldn't cause any pain to the human if she touched it. He poured extra magic into it to ensure that it would last a long time, too! Plus that meant it had enough magic in it to exist independent of his concentration.
"I wouldn't say the mindless undead are totally at a loss. They were a great tool in war, when I was fighting on the wrong side. The little exaltling would never allow such a strategy however, should the mass go rogue the people at risk and all that valiance..." not looking so great for her innocence in town there. "As if I'd ever let my control slip. Honestly." ok then. We love a confident woman?
Papyrus' attempts at thinking 'nice' would win Raven though... That's a laugh. "I won't stop you, but don't cry to me if she kicks you apart and you got to reassemble or something. Her being Ornery is exactly why i love her. Neither of us will get tamed that easily." the timing of that snort could practically be an agreement. "Actually, on that note, are you able to detach your bones at will? what is holding you together, physically?" She waned to get in there and start poking prodding... Frankly, she could. No one of importance would know.
Probably.
Then again, implementing any discoveries done the wrong way would lead to explanations being needed and she wasn't the only plegian dark mage with the shephards. someone would pick up on her smoothed out explanation for hurting this innocent skeleton. Ha. innocent skeleton. what a thought.
"Actually, before doing anything else It's best I know more or less how you tick in general. Dark magic is already fickle with humans, which i know Intimately, so experimenting with a preexisting anomaly needs to be done carefully. Aside from a living skeleton, what are you? The proportions of your skull for instance imply something other then a human origin to your bones. Are you capable of any magic yourself, other then whatever magic is holding you together? Things like that."
"Unless you'd like me to be reckless and risk losing one of your ribs or something." Why did she say that last part with such an amused smile?
#.🦴#🦴 papyrus ic#rp#pri-rp#.aversa (fire emblem)#🦴 verse | pre undertale#((diversity win! gender-inclusive pegasus hates more than just men! dgshshdsfs))#((and you made me Think regarding the ''can paps detach his bones'' question dghdsgf))#((i'm not totally set on the answer (and i can't help but think about the handplates au where the skeletons *can* do that ghfshf)))#((but personally i'm kinda leaning toward No..?))#((since monsters are made of magic. which is strongly connected to their soul))#((and removing a limb would also remove that body part's connection to the soul? probably?))#((so i could see a completely severed body part just immediately turning into dust for *any* monster))#(( (aside from monsters with naturally floating limbs of course) )).#(( (but even then the same could occur to them if whatever magic connecting their limbs to their body is disrupted in some way probably) ))#((and while a monster's soul is embedded in their body. maybe the 'core' or something of it can move around if absolutely necessary?))#((which is how papyrus can survive for a little bit with just his head when killed?))#((his weakened soul 'jumped' to his head as his body lost connection to it and turned to dust))#((but ultimately he couldn't last forever as just a head as his soul still shattered eventually))#((but i dunno))

man, idk if i can describe the Undertale dream I had last night... but i'm going to try, and it's a long one:
It started out as me playing an entirely different (fictional) game, but next thing i knew a glitch sent my character out-of-bounds or something like that. I tried to reset, but instead of going back to that game, it flicked through alternate Undertale timelines every time a reset was attempted. I don't remember what most of these were like, aside from largely being role swap AUs--one featured a confident Alphys who had seemingly put her soul in a robot body, and was happy to see me/my character because we could potentially help her research this weird timeline stuff she'd noticed...
how many times you could go back was limited, so eventually things got stuck in a timeline that was quite different from the normal game--and then i/my character left normal game space entirely and entered what seemed like the storage area for like... an appliance store? Idk, there were fridges and furniture and other junk scattered around--yes, very backrooms, i know. But my POV character wasn't the only one down there.
They found dozens of other monsters that had fallen out of the assorted timelines and ended up in this strange space. Most were random NPCs, but several were versions of the main Undertale cast. I recall two Mettatons who were dating each other, and an Undyne who filled Toriel's role in her original world. Sans was there too, seated on a couch, but... I tried to say hi to him, and got no reply. It seemed the whole experience had essentially broken him, and the only thing he cared about was making sure the Papyrus next to him hadn't Fallen Down--even though it was swap!Papyrus, and not his original brother.
In fact, there were seemingly no other Papyruses at all (though i don't remember there being any Asgores or Toriels either, ahah.). But as the group of lost monsters started moving to try and find a way out or get some answers, another monster appeared: Gaster. Though, he looked like he was wearing a paper-mache mask--it had that lumpy, papery texture, but no eyes or mouth... And apparently, all these disappearances were his doing. But he promised he had his reasons, and if we followed him we'd find out who he was and why he was doing this. So of course the crowd rushed to follow him down a corridor that got progressively more... unfinished looking, like the garbage area where Spamton lurks, with blocks of missing pixels. It looked unsafe, but i was excited to see what all this was leading to. i just had to follow him around the corner...!
And then I woke up.
Yep. Trolled by my own brain. this isn't the first time this kind of thing has happened to me either--I've had several dreams where i was going to learn some incredible secret, only to wake up moments before the reveal. So, now you can share my disappointment too, but I guess I didn't clairvoyantly reveal spoilers for Deltarune XD

Skeleton comes home to find S/O carefully carrying their brother to bed because brother fell asleep. Greeting their boyfriend coming home is for later, right now their main priority is moving Skeletons brother off the pillows on the floor to a much comfortable spot, you gotta wait a few minutes.
Undertale Sans - His soul left his body for a while as Papyrus looks completely dead in your arms, but then Papyrus lets go the ugliest snore and Sans lost it completely. He needs to record this. You need to see how ridiculous it looks to carry a skeleton twice your size to bed. He's in a good mood all evening.
Undertale Papyrus - He's not too surprised. Sans is impossible to wake up and will make the least effort possible to move. Papyrus is pretty sure he's awake right now and just playing dead because he's too lazy to walk to his room. He got the confirmation when Sans winked at him before you dragged him to his room. You know that you're doomed and that he will take advantage of this every time now, no? Well, you'll learn soon.
Underswap Sans - He's not too surprised either. Honey falls asleep in the worst places ever and it's hard to wake him up once he's comfortable. He has pity on you and helps you to carry his legs. The neighbor saw you by the window and called the cops thinking you're carrying a corpse lol.
Underswap Papyrus - He's shocked. This is a sight that rarely happens. Blue is a very light sleeper so him just deep asleep in your arms is like the shiniest Pokemon card ever. He doesn't want to wake up his brother so he just makes big gestures to express his shock.
Underfell Sans - Uh... Not that he's not happy you're hanging out with his bro and everything, but you should really not carry him like that. If he wakes up and realizes you saw him in this vulnerable position, Red is not going to help you when his brother will get mad lol. He's still following you just to see what will happen though. He's entertained right now.
Underfell Papyrus - All your work is wasted when Edge suddenly grabs Red by the hood and shakes him like a coconut screaming it's not his S/O's role to tuck him in bed like a child. Red is so confused about what's going on, completely disoriented. You feel bad for him lol.
Horrortale Sans - He stops you before you can pick his brother up. His back is too sensitive for this. He simply helps you pack pillows under him so he's not in pain when he wakes up and then he picks you up to take you to his room for a cuddle session.
Horrortale Papyrus - He's impressed Oak let you do that honestly. He's still warming to you and would have never fallen asleep next to you a few days before. He can see you're struggling though. Oak is very heavy. He comes to your rescue to help you carry him even if you hiss to him to be careful with his back and that you can do it alone.
Swapfell Sans - He rolls his eyes at you. You shouldn't hurt your back like that you know. Drop him on the floor if he's taking too much space on the floor, Rus doesn't care about sleeping there. What? Why are you looking at him like that? He's doing that since Rus was a kid and Rus is still alive so he's right.
Swapfell Papyrus - He insists on helping, which you find suspicious but agrees. He tucks Nox into bed, puts a huge teddy bear in his arms and manages somehow to stick a baby pacifier in his mouth. He takes a photo and leaves the room, smirking. Welp. It's not too late to search for plane tickets to another country before Nox wakes up.
Fellswap Gold Sans - He smirks and wishes you good night. You don't understand why until after putting Coffee to bed, you realize the skeleton is hanging to you like a koala and won't let you go. When you manage to free a hand, he growls and holds you closer. You're not moving from there before he wakes up, sorry.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - Uh.... You know Wine doesn't like you right? If he wakes up, he might literally stab you to death. Can you put him down? He's scared for your life right now. He follows you close, magic activated in case he needs to push his brother back lol. You put him in bed like you're carrying a bomb about to explode.

some us!papyrus fanart (my first ever, despite him being my fav) for the soul, with some personal biz under the cut if you're interested
undertale as a whole has been like. a huge comfort media for me ever since it came out. I listened to the music forever, created a bunch of 'fanart' (I traced cause I didn't know any better) and I enjoyed all the stories and comics early undertale provided. but, once one of my close friends (who also was very big into undertale) and I eventually drifted away, I got much more. closeted about my love of undertale and eventually it's au's. I didn't even share this love with my new pals that came along, and I felt so. guilty and embarrassed by it that it took years into a serious relationship to be able to talk about it and share it with my partner.
I'm not sure why, tbh. I was never bullied about it, or picked on. nobody said it was bad to like. but after I lost the one person I shared my enjoyment of it with, I just closed that part off. It was even difficult for me to like posts or follow accounts that posted it, id just ghost follow by remembering their usernames and repeatedly look them up
but now!!!! Im breaking my silence. I will draw art I will read self indulgent works and I will follow the accounts that post the things I like.
I am cringe, but I am free.

Papyrus' Heaven Theory - I Swear It's Not Card Friends
Updated June 4th, 2024. Currently probably the definitive version of Papyrus Knight.
Part 1 - The Flaws with Papyrus Knight
a. "It's out of character"
Well, this is the main flaw that Papyrus' Heaven is made to address. However, this section is to run through the argument, so let's see here:
Papyrus is often seen as a simple, happy, and whimsical guy. And on the surface level, in Undertale at least, he does seem to be.
He also has one core difference when compared to the rest of the main cast: He cannot kill you. Toriel can kill you if you're not careful. Sans can kill you in his battle, though it's hard to reach. Undyne and Asgore have essentially made it their job to do so. Mettaton lives in a killer robot body designed to murder humans, a body created by Dr. Alphys. Flowey is a genocidal maniac who will kill you, only to revive you and do it over and over again.
But Papyrus? The only instances of him being able to kill you were a rare glitch in older versions of Undertale, which appears to now be an impossibility.
Now, someone this nice surely cannot have been an evil Knight in another timeline, right?
Well, let me present you a mini-theory within this theory:
Papyrus' Disremembrance Theory
There is a LOT of evidence that Papyrus is intentionally making himself forget many things, many important things.
Dialogue from the King Papyrus ending as well as the Lost SOUL battle paints a dark picture for Papyrus' backstory. Him saying absolutely nothing during part of the fight is haunting, and could imply that he's unable to remember what he would've said at that point. This is especially relevant as it comes at the same time Sans says "you'll never see 'em again," which is a very likely reference to his time in Deltarune's reality. The King Papyrus ending is quite terrifying too, it alludes to his "usual encouragement" not always working, which seems to imply there are past coping mechanisms of his.
This—coupled with the evidence that he's from the DELTARUNE reality—implies he is deep in denial and has forced himself to forget nearly everything. By the way, if you're not aware of said evidence, check out my post detailing the evidence Sans and Papyrus are from the DELTARUNE universe. It's fairly good, but I did not address the sun argument...so I will now.
A major argument against the Papyrus Deltarune theory is that he doesn't know what the sun is. Clearly, he cannot be from Deltarune's Light World if he does not know what the sun is!
Well, my answer to this is fairly simple. He likely has beaten the Deltarune reality out of his mind so hard that he doesn't remember what the sun is. He has to strain himself to even remember there was grass, after all. He does use the term "sun on my skin" but I believe he isn't fully aware of the connection between "the sun" and a big ball in the sky.
To wrap up Papyrus' Disremembrance theory, I'd like to point out that it nicely contrasts Sans' whole "don't forget" thing. This is even reflected in the Lost SOUL dialogue; Sans is clearly grieving while Papyrus has fully made himself forget.
Now - back to the main point!
Since we have established Papyrus is in denial, and has made himself forget practically everything that occurred in his time in the DELTARUNE reality, we can now treat his Undertale incarnation as a "soft reset" of sorts. Many traits of his shine through, but he is a fairly different person.
For example, I believe one of his core traits is his "I WILL BE THE ONE!" mentality.
If Papyrus really is the Knight, him being obsessed with a goal of causing a world-changing event to happen would add up. The core motivation for both would be to become worshipped and to achieve what he perceives as the greater good.
It would also be consistent with how Asriel—the Angel in Undertale's world—deceived him into doing his bidding. Assuming that the Knight is working for Deltarune's Angel, that could be a recurring theme for Papyrus' story.
Lastly, I will mention how most Papyrus Knight theories mess this up. They often claim he does not know about the Roaring, or that he makes the Dark Fountains just to get some Darkner buddies. And, while that may be on the surface level closer to his Undertale characterization, it does not add up with the in-game evidence. Queen makes it clear that the Knight goes by 'Roaring Knight' and King implies he was ordered to fight the other kings by the Knight. This clearly implies they are devoted to doing the Angel's bidding, regardless of if it's morally wrong.
b. "He's from Undertale, so he can't be the Knight"
I won't spend too long on this one since it is absolutely unchangeable, but I will bring up a counterpoint, one that I explained earlier.
Papyrus is kind of a Deltarune character???
If anyone who first appeared in Undertale counts, it would be the skeletons.
Hell, W.D Gaster in Deltarune is very heavily implied to be the same Gaster who built the CORE in Undertale's reality.
It appears the skeletons are strange, interdimensional beings. Gaster exists everywhere at every possible time, and Sans and Papyrus are known to have hopped realities.
Essentially, this argument is a bit weaker for someone like Papyrus than someone like Undyne who isn't the same character across both games.
I do get it, though. However, I do think there is room to debate he's being treated weirdly compared to nearly everyone else.
This line about Papyrus.
This damn line about Papyrus.
I don't think it proves he's the Knight at all, but Toby Fox is totally conditioning us to wonder where the hell Papyrus is.
And given the way the newsletters have been using Papyrus, it's honestly odd to imagine he won't have some strangely major role in the plot.
I could easily use something like this GIF as "evidence" but it really isn't. I could argue it ties Papyrus to a future Dark World location, I suppose. But really, the main takeaway is that Papyrus is treated extremely weirdly when compared to the rest of the returning Undertale cast.
c. "Nobody knows who he is"
Well, this flaw is near-unfixable. However, it is possible to turn it into a slight strength.
Firstly, though, there are ways for him to be more known to the main cast.
Deltarune has teased a Papyrus hangout in a similar vein to Undertale's date. Not only has Sans directly told you that you'll hang out with him soon, but the Steam page hints that Papyrus is busy—implying he will show up later.
This could easily pay off in a hangout later in the game, which causes the Fun Gang to familiarize with him. Hell, it's possible there's a Dark World adventure with him later on. However, I have a question to pose to you:
Does it really matter?
Well, likely, yes. Though, it is potentially not as much of a flaw as you would think.
Consider, for a moment, who else do we know for sure has created a dark fountain? Kris. And, tell me if this sounds familiar.
"Antisocial person lacking friends, who—in the grand scheme of things—lives under the shadow of their older brother."
Sure, this isn't exactly that unique of a character archetype, but if the two Dark Fountain creators share those traits, it could mean something.
Kris isn't as unknown as Papyrus is, but still— many people do not know them very much. Some don't even know their name; Undyne addresses them as "Asgore's kid" and even the ones who do know their name are not quite familiar with them.
Some More Weird Parallels Between These Siblings
Kris and Papyrus are both compared to Luigi from the Mario series.
Yes, I get it's stupid to bring up Luigi in an essay about Papyrus being the Roaring Knight, but hear me out here.
In debating Papyrus Knight since I wrote the original draft of this essay, I've mostly encountered the response that it's a basic trope and cannot be considered as an intentional parallel.
However, knowing Toby Fox directly acknowledges it and considers both of them to be Luigi-like characters...that makes it far more plausible of a comparison to make. Both of them are younger siblings who, despite their circumstances, wish they were "as good" as their elders, being Asriel and Sans. Just LOOK at Kris' room.
Papyrus and The Fun Gang
Papyrus is absolutely one of, if not the best character to make the Knight in relation to the Fun Gang.
I know that sounds odd. How? The Mayor is a character who they all at least know exists, and a similar thing could be said about Alvin, or even a more out-there candidate such as Alphys.
But...one thing nearly everyone else has in common is that they are figures of authority. Figures not nearly comparable to the teenagers who were pulled into a universe-defining story which puts fate into their hands.
This could apply to Kris (albeit limiting the affected parties for obvious reasons) and arguably Dess, but Papyrus really does work the best from the perspective of an "equal" antagonist.
This becomes especially clear when you consider the main antagonists so far.
A king, a queen, some criminal mastermind guy. To have their creators and ultimate superior be just another sad teenager like the Fun Gang could work as a better story.
Now.
The main issues with Papyrus Knight have been fairly addressed.
They will be hard to correct, but I have gotten them out of the way in order to pave the foundation of my theory. If the Knight is creating these worlds, why? They don't just want little Darkner buddies...if so, why would they order Spade King to overthrow the other kings?
Well, the motivation comes down to one word.
...
Okay. This is a bit funny. When I originally made the theory, I considered Dess was controlling him to create an Angel's Heaven. But now i go against said idea. But I'm too lazy to change the title, so pretend that nothing happened.
Part 2 - Papyrus' Heaven Theory
The General Idea
If you just want the key details of Papyrus' Heaven, here you go.
Papyrus doesn't want the Dark Worlds for friends, for fun, for adventure, or whatever. He is fully convinced that whatever he is doing is working toward a great new future.
In Undertale, we see his "I WILL BE THE ONE!!!" mentality with his ultimate goal of saving monsterkind, by capturing the final human. I believe he felt that very way about being the Knight. That he is ultimately a legendary hero.
This parallels the Fun Gang, who are also a group of inexperienced teenagers lacking friends who have been turned into prophesied heroes of the world.
Papyrus is aware, in some way, that a Roaring exists and believes it's either a necessary evil or the key to the perfect end for the world. He is not going to have a Berdly moment where Ralsei tells him it's bad and he stops.
What he did hurt him so much that he repressed the memories and vowed to be a better person.
Now, let me look at a few of these points in further detail.
"Papyrus doesn't want to make fountains for friends, fun, or adventure. He believes he's bringing a grand future."
Well, I can sense a counterpoint coming.
If he is aware of the Roaring, and believes it could be used to help save the world, why would he not just start the Roaring right then and now?
Well, I feel the easiest way is to connect this to Gaster.
Sans is fairly obviously connected to Gaster, but what many people don't consider is the strange level of meta knowledge he possesses. Not only does he wink at what we can only conclude is the Player, but he fairly accurately knows the release window between chapters of Deltarune. (2 years to describe the window between Chapters 1 and 2, which is correct if you don't round upwards.)
Given he says you'll most likely see Papyrus again when Asriel returns, we can infer this will likely be around when a major story moment occurs. This is probably sometime between Chapter 5 and Chapter 7, however it is most likely during Chapter 5 proper, as that chapter may take place in the Flower King shop for various reasons. These include but aren't limited to the likely placement of the Church in Chapter 4 based on various context clues, the potential for a Flower King area to serve as a pseudo-endgame with Flowey characters and the like, and the May 2024 newsletter giving us some content regarding the Flower King shop a while after Chapter 3's development completed.
There are also many reasons to believe Chapter 5 will end with the Roaring beginning and heavily feature the Knight, such as Chess Theory and the original release schedule.
Regardless though, given that Papyrus is known to have some form of relationship with Gaster, I could see him having some level of fore-knowledge. It'd be interesting if Gaster actually needs the Knight for the Legend to come true, and thus is affiliated with them.
"In Undertale, we see his 'I WILL BE THE ONE!' mentality which may carry over into his attitude as the Knight."
Papyrus is strongly devoted to his goals in Undertale. Sometimes, painfully so. He is very, very committed to making sure Frisk is captured. Even after they become friends with him, he continues to aid Undyne in capturing him.
And yes, he is very aware of what he's doing.
Papyrus very much knows the consequences his actions have, and does not cease even despite the fact he is friends with the person who is going to be murdered; their blood would be on his hands. Yet he is unrelenting.
I imagine this is a personality the Knight could have.
To endanger children by placing Dark Worlds in a school and a library, and to continue creating these Dark Fountains even after having learned of the Roaring (if he didn't already know of it) is something I cannot see many characters doing. Of course, that can be addressed with others, but Papyrus in particular is very stubborn, or to put it another way, determined.
Regardless of whether a Knight Papyrus would want recognition or love, I believe he absolutely considers himself to be a hero. Perhaps he is misguided. And, if the Delta Warriors are also misguided, then it'd be a double misguide. Two opposing sides, and yet both manage to be wrong in a sense.
Does Papyrus Want Recognition Again?
Speaking of, though, it is entirely likely that Papyrus wants to be hailed for his work as the Roaring Knight.
Perchance Sans is being truthful when he says Papyrus wants friends, and Papyrus takes that in an unhealthy direction using Dark Worlds.
While Kris used the Dark Worlds to make new friends with Lancer, Ralsei, and Susie, as well as improving their bond with Noelle and Berdly, the Knight has been shown to have manipulated the chapter bosses in order to worship them. Maybe not directly, but they absolutely have displayed behaviour that implies that the Knight feels like a god to them.
It is presumable that Papyrus may also want to gain praise from other Lighters in this manner as well, but he certainly has taken the role of a 'god' to some Darkners.
"Papyrus is aware of the Roaring and considers it necessary to fulfill his grand goal."
Given Queen calls the Knight the Roaring Knight, this is a pretty clear-cut case.
As I mentioned in the last section, Papyrus absolutely does know his actions have consequences, and it's very hard to change their mind. In Undertale, thankfully, most of his actions were benevolent. But in this case, he is really acting in a dangerous manner which is bound to hurt many people.
"What he did hurt him so much that he repressed the memories, and vowed to change and improve as a person."
I already covered this earlier, during the Papyrus' Disremembrance segment.
However, I do want to expand a little more on a specific argument against it here.
I've seen Papyrus' ignorance at what a human looks like being used as a point against him being from the Deltarune world, or a point against him having met Kris.
Now, if Papyrus' Disremembrance theory is correct, that explains that argument away.
Next, I'll cover more tangible evidence for the theory.
Part 3 - Some Potential Evidence I Guess
Susie Is QC Lmao
When talking about the Roaring Knight and the Dark Fountains, Susie says this:
"The Roaring Knight…
(...)
Since they started showing up,
Everything’s gotten a lot more interesting, hasn’t it…?"
This is odd. It's very, very similar in wording to the way QC describes Sans and Papyrus being new in town. She says the following:
"There’s two of ‘em…
Brothers, I think.
They just showed up one day and…
… asserted themselves.
The town has gotten a lot more interesting since then."
The focus on the Fountains being new and the very similar choice in wording leads me, and others, to believe this may be an intentional parallel. Of course, there are other Knights who could be 'new' like the Vessel, but Papyrus fits the best by far, because of the fact the original statement was about him and Sans.
Papyrus and Dreams
Papyrus is weirdly frequently connected to dreams.
If you take even a casual glance at Deltarune, it's pretty clear dreams are significant to this game.
"This robot was the embodiment of a lightner’s dreams."
“The edge of shadow, where reality and dream meet.”
In the Undertale 5th anniversary alarm clock winter dialogue, Papyrus talks about how he let Sans sleep despite wanting him to help to clean up after the holiday party, and adds that this dream was his gift to him.
"SO I LET HIM SLEEP.
HE BETTER NOT EXPECT ME TO CLEAN UP BY MYSELF NEXT TIME! THAT GOOD DREAM WAS MY PRESENT TO HIM! NYEHEHEHEHEH!!!"
In Papyrus’s room, upon inspecting his bed, he talks about his dream of driving down a highway:
THAT’S MY BED!
(…)
OF COURSE, THAT’S JUST A DREAM.
SO INSTEAD I CRUISE WHILE I SNOOZE.
Papyrus and the IcePalace Maze
Now, I'm including this one more for the hell of it rather than because it's really evidence. But, regardless, here it is.
On the Spamton Sweepstakes website, clicking on the black door of the blue and white d_a_m_n_y_o_u_t_e_n_n_a page leads us to Noelle’s blog. https://deltarune.com/icepalace_glaceir/. In her blog entry, she talks about the cross shaped maze in the ice area from the game Dragon Blazers. If the player wasn’t accompanied by a specific character to guide them, they got lost and became stuck forever.
In the Undertale 5th anniversary alarm clock winter dialogue, Sans describes how Papyrus threw a holiday party for everyone and made a maze out of snow and ice, in which Asgore got lost:
"this winter, papyrus threw a holiday party for everyone.
[...] oh yeah, he even made a, uh, a “welcoming puzzle” for the party.
a giant labyrinth made of ice, snow, and musical ornament,
you, uh, had to get through it to get to the front door.
think asgore got lost in there for a while.
undyne had to go save him."
Mettaton refers to it as a "mind maze" which is extremely interesting if it truly is referencing a Dark World.
To be clear, though, my claim is that it is a parallel to Papyrus' previous actions, not that they really created a Dark World here. That would be silly.
The True Meaning of the Word Font
There is a very compelling case that the word 'font' means 'Dark fountain.'
Papyrus (as well as Sans and Gaster) use the more common modern definition of 'font' which is essentially just a computer typeface.
However, the more traditional definitions oddly line up with a description of a Dark Fountain.
Don't put too much stock in this one. It's mostly a fun coincidence!
"A receptacle in a church for the water used in baptism."
This one should be fairly obvious.
Darkness is compared to water a lot. Down to the word 'fountain' being used at all. The filename for the background in the intro is "IMAGE_DEPTH" and the sound effect when Kris and Susie fall into a Dark World is called "ocean."
The 'baptism' part is especially interesting though.
A 'holy fountain.' Not only does King describe fountains as Holy, but so does the soundtrack. The theme of the Dark Fountains is called THE HOLY. Given it is in all caps and fairly reasonably connected to Gaster, it's interesting that a skeleton who uses a strange font himself would describe them this way...
"A reservoir for oil in an oil lamp."
Not much to say on this, other than the fact oil is VERY dark. A very dark liquid such as Darkness may be comparable with oil.
"A source of a desirable quality or commodity, a fount."
Now this really just describes the Dark World.
Not only does the Dark World act as a form of 'Dream World,' but it actively amplifies the skills and powers of those who enter.
Monsters are able to use magic, or at least harness it more powerfully than normal.
Given the way Dark Worlds work, you could very much consider them to fit this definition of font.
Papyrus' Heaven - Conclusion
This is my first long-form theory, and I hope you liked it. Please point out errors or holes, and I'll go back and edit them!
Updated June 4, 2024 to reflect changes in my, and other people's, visions for how it should go.

an unnecessarily in depth analysis of my take on underfell papyrus
before we begin: let it be known that none of this is properly confirmed or canon, this is all based on the version of underfell that almost solely exists in my brain. also the quality of grammar, spelling, and translation of brainrot to coherent essay is not guaranteed. also uf!papyrus belongs to underfella
to start lets look at the very basics, what would it take to turn papyrus, the only person to believe even the worst of the worst can improve, the causation (however indirectly) of the true pacifist route, the only monster that will never kill frisk, the sole creature in the entire world of undertale to be dubbed the sadistic fuckface flower's favourite, that the world is kill or be killed? allow me to spin you the tale of how i think it happened.
maybe once upon a time when uf!papyrus was just a kid, he wanted to be a hero. he wanted to be a pacifist in a kill or be killed world. maybe, even unintentionally, he constantly put both him and his older brother in danger. and one day, he tried to spare the wrong people, so both he and his brother were scarred in the process causing a crack over the eye for papyrus and a lost tooth for sans. and on this fateful day papyrus was faced with the choice, kill the attackers and survive or spare them and be killed. and maybe since he's still alive as an adult, he chose to kill, thereby gaining his first LV.
at least thats what i think happened. this traumatic event would cause a number of changes in his life, including, ditching his former obsession with "being a hero" in favor of being a villain, on several occasions being peer pressured to murder, and being more harsh to sans.
BUT. as i have said before and will say again, papyrus' soul is almost definitely bravery and integrity so his preference for pacifism isnt going down without a fight! maybe his whole "kidnapping and torture chamber" schtick is an excuse to not have to kill someone while not being seen as weak. maybe he lies about how many people he's killed or how much LV he has when in reality both numbers are shockingly low. maybe he wants to be captain of the guard so he can delegate the killing to others. maybe he hates asgore because its because of him that their world is like this. maybe he never kills the human. one thing i've never understood is whether or not he kills or spares the human or if he does the whole "OOP YOU'RE AT ONE HP! TIME TO GO TO THE CAPTURE ZONE!" thing. i like to think that he does. hell ive already done a whole damn drawing on what i think it would look like.
⬇️
so yeah. he spares frisk. and maybe adopts them
one last aspect of this guy that intrigues me before i go! what is underfell papyrus' dynamic with flowey? maybe he respects flowey a ton. maybe papyrus is envious of flowey's courage to run away from fights and defuse them instead of hurting the opponent. maybe they're the only one that the other truly opens up to.
but these are only my thoughts on the dude because frankly, there arent enough character analysis about uf!paps. feel free to add your own! or not! i dont care!

“Ambush”
A small drabble /idea for luna-is-lost @luna-is-lost
Based on Underwelcomed Universe created by Luna @luna-is-lost
Cw: blood, angst, major character death, major character injury,
Undertale by Toby Fox
Underwelcomed by Luna @luna-is-lost
SURPRISE LUNA!! GEHEHEHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA
The humans had ambushed them.
They found them.
They found their hideout.
Undyne screamed "WE FALL INTO A TRAP! LINE UP!"
The soldiers heard her. They tried to fight back.
The battle was fierce.
Flames and and debris were splattered around.
Among this chaos...
Papyrus didn't notice Sir was behind him...
Sans.... did.
It all happened to fast.
Sans pushed the human he was fighting away and teleported.
Sir raised the weapon. Ready hit Papyrus.
"PAPYRUS!" Sans screamed and teleported between them just as Sir swang his weapon.
Papyrus turned around.
He didn't have time to react.
Sans appeared in front of Sir and took the hit.
He gasped as the weapon cracked his bones.
His armor and clothes were torn his blood spilled in Papyrus's and Sir's face.
Papyrus saw. Everything.
His expression turned from confusion to shock to dread.
Sans fell backwards, Papyrus caught him.
Blood ran down Sans's mouth.
"SANS!" he yelled.
Sans took Sir's soul with what little force he had and pushed Sir away slamming him to the wall.
Papyrus held his wound.
"Sans... Wh... I..."
Sans eyes were closing. He tried to speak but he gurgled. His blood and magic oozed.
Papyrus picked him up and floated to a safer place. A cave close to their hideout.
He carefully laid him down.
As if he was the world's most finest porcelain.
He put his scarf under his skull, To give him a little bit of comfort.
Sans groaned "Sans.. Please..."
Sans took a deep breath "hhhhh... re... u... o..ka..y"
"yes.. brother, i am okay.." he said. He carefully hugged him and adjusted his body.
Sans groaned and coughed heavily.
"Sans, I'll try to heal you-"
Sans began coughing heavily.
His breathing grew heavier and heavier.
Sans carefully wrapped his arms around papyrus and whispered softly and with strain "i love you bro...it will be okay...im sorry".
"SANS... I... love you too! Please! I can heal you!."
Papyrus attempted but... Healing magic wasn't working. "Sans.. Why.. Isn't it working?"
Sans took a deep breath "It's okay... Paps.. I am proud of you! Look at you! All grown up..."
"Sans please don't talk like that! Sans i love you too! We promised we will do many things together! Sans...."
Papyrus tried again and again but healing magic wasn't working.. The weapon Sans was struck had magic that was far more powerful than that of monsters...
" Paps... Stop... It's okay.. "
" NO IT'S NOT! YOU... I CAN'T HEAL YOU! IT'S NOT WORKING! "
"It's okay.." Sans gently caressed his face leaving a trace of blood..
Papyrus hugged him tightly yet gently "I love you Sans... You are the best big brother I could ask for! I.. I am sorry please don't go!"
Sans's eye sockets teared up "i..love you...bro...we will be free...remember that.. I'll always be with you... Even if you can't see me... -"
He started coughing heavily. Papyrus looked at him unsure of what to do.
"SANS! STAY WITH ME!" Sans looked at Papyrus with frightened expression...
He didn't want to die. Papyrus held him closer to his chest. Sans claws at his armor he tried to get closer to Papyrus.
Papyrus hugged him.
Soon... Sans's grip loosened.
"Sans...?" Papyrus's voice cracked.
Sans leaned his head to the side and exhaled softly.
Sans went limb in his brother's embrace. His hand fell on the ground.
Papyrus held him closer, listening to the chaos outside.
Sans.
His big brother.
Whom he loved so much...
Was gone.
Papyrus shook him.
"Sans!"
"..." Sans's eye sockets were closed.
"Sans.... This... Isn't a joke.. Stop fooling around... I will listen to you puns just please... I'll do anything just please... "
...Silence...
He shook him harder. Still no reaction.
".. Please..." his chest ached. He began hyperventilating.
Fat hot tears blurred his vision. Papyrus held his brother close almost squeezing him in his embrace.
A scream escaped his teeth.
"AAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGG!!
HE WAS AIMING AT MEEEE!!! WHY WOULD YOU STEP IN FRONT OF ME?!
SSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNSSSSS"
Noone answered his anguished cries...
Images flashed in front of his mind.
Sans smiling at him.
Sans taking care of him.
Smiles
Hugs
...... Sans....
Sans... was gone.
Papyrus wept the lose of his beloved brother... He was sitting in that cave alone... Covered with the blood of his own brother.
His brother whom he won't have by his side anymore... Ever again...
Papyrus was alone...
.
.
Thank you for reading! 💙

By procrastinating working on one of my Undertale AUs, I have created some refs for another! Specifically, the lost soul one. Not sure what to name it yet, but still!
I have refs for Papyrus and Frisk made!
Refs and lore under cut since it’s quite long.
The first ref I made was for Papyrus, since he was the first one I thought of for this AU.
The lost souls have the iconic lost soul heads, but are also mostly devoid of colour. Lore wise, it’s kind of like… your colours are a part of your soul? And the longer your soul is lost, the more your colours fade.
Papyrus would wander around Snowdin, patrolling and looking for monsters who aren’t lost souls, and humans. He would feel as though he’s missing something whenever he sees the abandoned sentry stations or the mostly collapsed snowmen. The royal guard dogs would report to him, and he would report to Undyne.
If he was ever freed from the lost soul state, he would feel immensely guilty. It was on his words that everyone appeared to the Throne Room, where they got their souls stolen. He would accompany the human throughout their journey in an attempt to right his wrongs.
Next up, Frisk. They fell into the Ruins, the one place where the monsters haven’t become lost souls. Toriel and the Ruins monsters guide them to Home. Frisk stays for a while, but eventually they decide to leave. Toriel gives Frisk part of her old robe to show that Frisk is under her protection when they first fell. Once Frisk leaves the Ruins, Napstablook would keep an eye on them and report back to the monsters in the Ruins on how Frisk is doing. The monsters in the Ruins are trapped there, as they have used their own magic to create a kind of barrier like seal to prevent Flowey or the lost souls from coming in.
Frisk would be unable to save, but instead use the save points to create a SAVE button during fights. Once they reach a save point, their determination gets stronger and they are able to SAVE more monsters.
This would be what a lost soul’s soul would look like. The lost soul would have some small glitches, to combat the memories that have been concealed or hidden. The vines would have been added by Flowey, so he would always be able to control the lost souls. Additionally, it’s an easy method of locating them. He can sense where all of his vines are.
Finishing this off with some art I did of Papyrus in this AU! I actually did this before my first post about this AU, and it’s what gave me the motivation to write/draw more about it!

And now spoiler-y TS!US thoughts
I actually mostly just want to talk about the character writing for Sans and Papyrus because they are my favorite characters and my heart flutters when fancontent does them right. Ok first of all
Sans is scary :scared:
I feel like Sans is a character that has lost a lot of his edge when it comes to fancontent. What makes Sans intimidating is the fact that you don't see it coming when he's being serious with you; it's meant to catch you off guard. But nowadays everyone and their mom knows about Sans' secret super powerful scary side in the Undertale No-Mercy Run... and it doesn't have that same bite when fancontent tries to portray him as threatening.
TS!Underswap Sans is a very, very well done subversion of that. He comes right out of the gate letting you know that he hunts down bad people, and that he's not afraid to mess you up if you decide to do messed-up things. And you think that he's talking about his superhero persona, and he's putting on an act for you, but then you do a No Mercy run and find out that he is being 100% serious. You knew it was coming and yet it still blindsides you when he actually decides to hunt you down for being a weirdo murderer. It doesn't feel out of character and it doesn't feel unearned; Sans is a hero, and he will do what a hero needs to do. In every sense of the word.
Writing him to be a superhero was a really genius choice. You can have him be his normal lazy slacker self when he's out of costume, and therefore he can fill in Papyrus' role a la Underswap without it feeling OOC, because he's acting. But as I just pointed out--... he's not acting. He is, but he's not. He's an enigma of a guy, and you never know when you're supposed to be taking him seriously, and THAT is the mark of a very good Sans characterization.
Papyrus... we don't actually know that much about, I feel. I really wish I had more to say about him, but I think the fact that I don't makes it work all the more. He takes Sans' role, so it's sort of a given that he's mysterious. He's an inventor, too! What a fun little callback to Undertale Papyrus and all of those little gadgets he made.
His No Mercy characterization is really, really interesting. Despite taking Sans' role, he still comes at you with utmost compassion and understanding-- and it just makes me wonder all the more how everything will play out. I feel like NM final boss Papyrus is so, so often mischaracterized-- people write him as way too willing to fight, way too willing to get vengeance. That's not him! Papyrus is the one person who will stick with you to the end, and always believe that you can be better-- and dropping him into Sans' role with that in mind could be so so SO interesting! I have the utmost faith in Team Switched to do something clever here.
Also, Papyrus' reaction to Sans' death was heartbreaking.
Changing the subject, in this universe-- Frisk and Monster Kid take the role of the first fallen human and Asriel, respectively. I really, really doubt that Frisk has any ties to Chara's soul in this universe in the same way that Frisk and Chara were connected in Undertale. In fact, I have a good feeling that Frisk and MK were reincarnated into Flowey and Temmie, respectively.
Flowey specifically talks in a very neutral, unwavering tone. They don't have any strong opinions on any route you choose to take, and they'll follow and help you out regardless. They're outwardly friendly but also unsubtlely sarcastic and detatched. Kind of what we get from Frisk, using the very minuscule characterization given to us.
Also, I feel like Flowey being genderless in this universe is pretty significant. Haha.
I think that's all I have to say for right now. I didn't mean for Sans to take up half of this post-- in fact, I didn't really like his character until I played the NM route... and then everything clicked. Such good character writing
