5/10/24.
I'm going to guess that The Garrys don't sound like any other band ever to come out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. They sound like a combination of 60s girl band with surf music. In fact, in the Bandcamp notes for "Get Thee to a Nunnery", their style is described as a combination of "The Ventures, the drama of Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti westerns, the dreamy psychedelia of Kurt Vile, France Gall’s brand of mod-pop cheek, and the lo-fi garage noir of Los Saicos."
I would add Electrelane and Barbara Manning to that description.
The Garrys are made of up of the three Maier sisters and they have releases going back to 2015. They have a new single, "Cakewalk" which may signal a new release in the future.
"Get Thee to a Nunnery" and many of their other releases are through Saskatoon label Grey Records (the label has also released work from Shirley & The Pyramids).

But what if punk wasn't invented in London, New York or another English-speaking country… but in Peru? Erwin Flores is the lead singer of the band "Los Saicos" - the first punk band in the world?

ME DICEN EL MATADOR
A Cassian Andor rock en español fanmix
"Rock en español" is the term given to all Spanish-language rock music, of any subgenre. Because of the diversity of music already present in hispanophone communities, it's given way to a wide array of musical subgenres, from latin fusion to Andaluz rock to Andean rock. This playlist includes music from Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, México and Perú, ranging from genre-defining acts like Los Jaivas (Andean rock) and Los Saicos (punk-before-punk), to hugely popular artists like Los Prisioneros and Charly García, to small, local bands like Alcaico and Semilla Distópica.
Some lyrics (with translations to English) under the cut.
Futuro - Café Tacvba
"Al final qué importa, si muerto en vida sobreviví" "In the end, what does it matter, I survived as a walking dead man"
Pájaro Errante - Los Jaivas
"Ave que vuela sin procedencia / no puede más y más" "A bird who flies without an origin / can't go on anymore"
Nos Siguen Pegando Abajo - Charly García
"Miren lo están golpeando todo el tiempo / Lo vuelven, vuelven a golpear" "Look they're hitting him all the time / They're hitting him over and over again"
El hijo de Hernández - El Cuarteto De Nos
"Porque soy lo que soy / Y no quien quieras vos" "Because I am who I am / And not who you want"
El Cielo Puede Esperar - Attaque 77
"Tengo un lugar reservado en el cementerio / El cielo, el cielo puede esperar" "I have a spot reserved in the cementery / Heaven, heaven can wait"
La Sangre - Alcaico
"La luna está roja para el final / Siempre te va a buscar" "The moon is red in the end / It's always looking for you"
Fugitivo de Alcatraz - Los Saicos
"Y corro ocultándome en la oscuridad / Estoy / Fugitivo de Alcatraz" "I run and hide in the dark / I am / A fugitive from Alcatraz"
Estrechez De Corazón - Los Prisioneros
"Pero no voy a aguantar / ¡Estrechez de corazón!" "But I will not tolerate / A narrow heart!"
El Matador - Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
"Viento de libertad, sangre combativa" "Wind of freedom, combative blood"
MJL 1993 - Semilla Distópica
"Cárcel o muerte es tu destino / La decisión ya está tomada" "Prison or death is your destiny / The decision has already been made"
El Necio - Los Bunkers
"Yo me muero como viví" "I will die as I lived"
La Matanza de Corpus Christi - Tenemos Explosivos
"Me han disparado tantas veces que mi cuerpo ya no sangra" "They've shot me so many times that my body no longer bleeds"
#cassian andor#andor#this is sooooooo niche like soooo niche that i literally made it for me and then only decided to post it bc i wanted ot make a graphic#star wars#rock en español

los saicos were the first punk band ever in history, so in that regard theyre already more important for music than british first wave punk bands, but musically theyre much more adventurous too, even with the contraints of a conservative latin american. they could have done anarchy in the uk but the sex pistols couldnt do fugitivo de alcatraz

A.CHAL Announces 2/27 'ESPIRITU' Album, Announces Spring Tour
Peruvian American artist and songwriter A.CHAL announces ESPIRITU, his upcoming album, and his most personal work to date. Written entirely by A.CHAL himself, and aided by visuals and creative direction by renowned photographer Xavier Scott Marshall, the upcoming ESPIRITU emerges from the artists' adventures in his two homes: the mountains of Peru and Queens, New York, with a pit stop in Los Angeles. From Peru, A.CHAL derives his love of the natural world, his desire to experience elevated states of consciousness, and wisdom from his grandfather. He combines his heritage with a worldliness and love of fashion and creativity that he picked up in the Five Boroughs, particularly Queens, one of the most diverse places on Planet Earth.
The upcoming project is likewise a melting pot of genres, moods, and confessions: lead single "Saico," covered by Office Mag, borrows elements from psychedelic rock as it interrogates his reckless behavior, while A.CHAL's December 2023 release "Walk On Everything" (and its accompanying video) radiates extreme confidence as it rides a propulsive "beach goth" instrumental. Last week, A.CHAL shared the invigorating "PIRITU," along with its video, directed by fashion photographer Sam Nixon. His first new album since 2021, and his first as an independent artist, E$PIRITU releases on February 27th via GAZI WORLD, LLC.
Along with the album, A.CHAL announces the "Espiritu Tour," passing through 6 cities in North America in Spring 2024. The tour kicks off in Brooklyn on March 26th, passing through Toronto, Chicago, Denver, and more before finishing in Los Angeles on April 5th. Sign up for the pre-sale for the "Espiritu Tour," live now, and buy all A.CHAL concert tickets HERE.
Alejandro Chal Salazar spent years making his own way in the music industry, building an audience with his evocative, trap-influenced sound that produced hits like "000000," "Love N Hennessy," and "GAZI." Now, after departing his major label and two and a half years of soul-searching, A.CHAL is preparing to release his most introspective record yet, exposing all sides of himself and he attempts to find his place in a turbulent world. Late last year, A.CHAL released two singles that hinted at the direction of his upcoming project: "Saico," covered by Office Mag, borrows elements from psychedelic rock as it interrogates his reckless behavior, while A.CHAL's December 2023 release "Walk On Everything" (and its accompanying video, directed by Xavier Scott Marshall) radiates extreme confidence as it rides a propulsive "beach goth" instrumental. Most recently, A.CHAL teamed up with Jimmy Whoo for the fiery single "6 de la Mañana."
Stay tuned for many more announcements about A.CHAL and ESPIRITU in the near future.
