Nunca, totalmente.
Come on now I hear you're feeling down Well, I can ease your pain And get you on your feet again
I'll need some information first No es necesario saber más. Tu universidad.

Things, however, rarely happened the way you understood them. Mostly they just sort of drove up alongside what you thought was the case and then moved randomly down some other way.

Two of my NYC BFFs (who I have known since my early 20s) gifted me this beautiful hand painted print from Ideal Bookshelf for my bday a few years ago, which now hangs in my home office. These are just a few of my favorite books that have really meant a lot to me. Anna Karenina by Tolstoy being one of those books. I first read it in high school (after getting grounded and having nothing else to do but read books.) I have read many of them more than once and some of them even more than twice. When I’m writing a new book, I don’t tend to read much... but now that I turned in my latest draft of Anna K. (my YA reimagining of Anna Karenina to be published by Flatiron Books in 2020) all I want to do is read. I have a very tall stack of new books to tackle, but am thinking this year I may trade off between new books and books I have read before and loved. I’m always open to suggestions of new books to read! • • • • #booklover #favoritebooks #idealbookshf #tolstoy #annakarenina #timonrien #jonathanfranzen #lorriemoore #prideandprejudice #author #writer #yaauthor #writerscommunity #writersofinstagram #lionelshriver #readeverything #art #tvwriter #screenwriter #bff #birthdaygifts #writehardplayhard #booknerd #nerdygirl #poetry #pamhouston #amybloom #shortstories (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuYv6dqA1tM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=yk00lxxjt7ck

Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? by Lorrie Moore
New York, Knopf, 148 pg.
A disclaimer: Lorrie Moore’s Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? (1994) may be the best novel I’ve ever read. Like the other maybe-best novels I’ve read (Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Muriel Spark’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) it’s less than 200 pages. Something about its economy makes it…more. It’s a little book that cuts close to the bone. End disclaimer.
I checked Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? out of the library one late summer and racked up weeks’ worth of fines because I wanted to keep it for myself. I finally found my own copy, used, in a San Francisco bookstore. It’s the story of an inexpressible friendship between girls—the kind that makes you ache when you’re young, that causes a clawing, gnawing feeling, back then and years later.
It sounds like Lana Del Rey’s “This Is What Makes Us Girls”: young girls in a small town—in this case, 15 year-olds Berie and Sils—truant from respectable past times, drinking in the middle of the night and dancing with older men, dreaming of love and finding they can only really count on each other, trouble coming and one being sent away from the other. And the friendship’s intensity dissolving, hard to believe when the two come together again as adults, yet impossible to forget. How does that happen? How does friendship feel like a second skin in memory, yet is impossible to recapture in life? I think that’s why Moore wrote this little novel, to sort out that impossibility. To remember what guileless intimacy feels like.
The novel also contains the best description of first love I’ve come across, the only adequate one:
I loved him fiercely, like an orphan, with every newly banished, bereaved, and sexual part of me. I had no idea who either of us was; there was just the thick fog of love and bodies and promises. We were child bride, child groom, each seeking the other’s animal heart.
The narrator, Berie, speaks of her first boyfriend at boarding school, but she could also be remembering what the throes of her friendship with Sils felt like; perhaps she couldn’t have felt her first love as fiercely had she not had that connection as a reference point for intensity. Then there’s the novel’s seemingly inexplicable title, a question: Who will run the frog hospital? It refers to a game the girls played as younger children, which involved caring for the pond frogs tortured by their boy peers. As Berie and Sils discover booze and men this ritual appears to have been forgotten, but the adult Berie remembers it vividly: the opening paragraphs find her in Paris, “eat[ing] brains every night” and hoping “for a flashback” to the frog hospital days as she dines on escargot. The title is the last, desperate question of a child, searching to explain the inexplicable—in this case, the dissolution of a beloved friendship—a question so random and beguiling that it can only have an impossible answer. It distills both the ache of the friendship itself and the ache of losing it, but, especially, the ache of remembering it.

I only picked up this book yesterday but I'm already enchanted by it. How could anyone not be amoured with lines like; '...her glass jewelry launching quasars into the audience...' and 'He could stare at one star, one brilliant and fidgety star, so long that his whole insides seemed suddenly to rush out into the sky to meet it.' ✨ . QOTD: Can you solve today's anagram, 'ORIEL ROOMER'? 😕 . . . . . . #faberfriday#anagrams#lorriemoore#80sbooks#booksandboardgames#scrabble#boardgames#vintagescrabble#vintageboardgames#friyaybooks#pursuepretty#readingissexy#bookreaders#readingstagram#bookreading#bookaddiction#readingislife#readingiscool#fortheloveofreading#readingiscool#fortheloveofreading#bookmad#library#bookhoarder#bookcollector — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2IWTY21

"Outside, she walked carefully back towards the villa, but first stopped at the gelato shop for a small dish hazelnut ice cream. It was smooth, toasty, buttery, like a beautiful liqueur, and she thought how different it was from America, where so much of the ice cream now looked like babies had attacked it with their cookies." ~ #terrificmother #lorriemoore #currentlyreading #bookstagram #faberstories #hazlenutgelato https://www.instagram.com/p/B3R7Ph5gIaK/?igshid=7awg95i07i8d
