Like- aside from the name drop of a prominent clan (The Uzumaki), and being known for the wide field and art of Sealing techniques. There is basically nothing.

What about fashion trends? Colours? What did Uzushio look like before the mass genocide of war? What traditions were there? What other clans once lived there? Were they extreme Isolationists? Were the people generally xenophobic or were they a menagerie of port cities who socialized with all walks of life?

Summary:

kishimoto's inspiration

In july i went to a museum in Austin, TX which had an exhibition on ukiyo-e prints from Japan. I came across a couple of things which were Naruto related (or vice-versa, I guess lol). This is not really a surprise since we know how much Kishimoto inspired himself in Shinto and Buddhist mythology to create Naruto, but i thought others here might appreciate the lore since it's pretty cool to see! (sorry in advance for the shitty photo quality, it's hard to photograph in museum settings)

Above is a detail from Prince Hanzoku Terrorized by a Nine-Tailed Fox, 1806, by Katsushika Hokusai. The description read: 'Foxes often appear as tricksters in Japanese mythology, mercurial and fickle creatures that can be harbingers of prosperity or destruction. Among the most venerable and feared foxes were those said to have nine tails, as they could assume the form of humans, usually beguiling young women.' Remind you of someone? I find it interesting how Kishimoto transformed the idea and really shaped Naruto around this creature. Even the sexy jutsu comes from here!!

And here are The Whirlpools of Awa, from the series Setsugekka [Snow, Moon, and Flowers], 1857, by Utagawa Hiroshige. 'The whirlpools at Awa are created when the tide rushes through the Naruto Straits between the islands of Awaji and Shikoku in southern Japan. Hiroshige favored them as a subject from the 1830s onward;' Maybe we finally know what Uzushiogakure looks like!

It would probably be pretty cool to do a deep dive into stuff like this and compare it side by side with Kishimoto's depictions vs. mythological renderings (and even real life places, it seems!). Maybe I'll do it one day.

The Immortal Shinobi

Konoha has made a magazine interview about the Second Hokage's son: Shinkei Senju.

Page 116:

The interviewer had went to the Senju Prince after a peace treaty between Konohagakure and Uzushiogakure. The interviewer had asked Shinkei some questions.

I = Interviewer. S = Shinkei.

I: "Shinkei-sama, with the recent war and peace treaty, you revealed your parents. While many knew Lord Second was your father, it came to a massive surprise for everyone that the Second Hokage is actually a female and was secretly married to Madara Uchiha. How did it feel to grow up with a unique and fascinating heritage?"

S: "It was interesting. Truth is I haven't been bothered. I was made in Konohagakure but was born in Uzushiogakure when mother went on a business trip with Aunt Mito-sama."

I: "When you defended Lady Uzukage during the Kage summit and Lady Hokage was surprised to see you, she stated surprised that you were alive this entire time and that she revealed your relationship with Lord Fourth as his father. Can you go further into detail?"

S: "Minato huh? I keep forgetting the kid was a Kage, must run in the family." Shinkei had chuckled slightly during the interview. "I wasn't with Minato-chan for very long. I always had a feeling Minato-chan was going to be powerful and well known when he grew up. Minato-chan is a lot like his mother, in looks and personality. I'm just lucky he got my brain."

I: "During the Fourth war, you revealed you were immortal, can you go into further detail? Was it because of Madara Uchiha or did you aquire it through a technique or experiment?"

S: "Nope. Pure luck and stupidity. While on my mission, I was fighting someone far much stronger than me. I used a seal explosion in a last attempt, I had attempted to end myself and my enemy. However I woke up, still breathing. I have no idea how I became immortal but it became very clear to me."

Shinkei had gone on saying that he is not bothered on what people think about him and he'll remain on the world until he finds a way out.

I made Shinkei around 4 years ago after I left High School. He was created for fun and he just stuck with me. After making some lore for him just to distract myself (I wasn't in a good state during 2021), Shinkei just stuck onto me and is now one of my favourite Naruto/Boruto Ocs.

But I like rewriting lore in animes/games to make it unique to my characters because I don't want to erase the original creator's work and ruin it for myself, so I make a seperate universe and change characters and make them different.

What was your favorite fanfic you ever wrote

Great question!! Oh no!! For reference, it's Naruto, so this is only going to make sense if you got real into the meat of the lore.

For context, I took a lot of African and African American studies in college to get a handle on some inner personal stuff. Between that and an entire re-working of my spiritual beliefs, I- I shit you not- reworked the entire cultural mythos of Uzushiogakure and it's people through a feudal-era isekai SIOC. The premise was a canon rewrite in which everything was slightly different with pasts that interacted strangely, until the reader has to trace back exactly what and where everything had changed. A lot of things inspired this, from a different perspective on African religious themes and common cues in African mythology to the not-really-all-that-discussed historic era in which Asia and Africa had a mild overlap in interaction...? But in the end, it was an exploration in creating a people and culture separately developed from mainland chakra usage and with different expectations and beliefs...

Blister Pack has a place in my heart for its role in my life, Trade of Trickery is my baby, and Apartments 31c was fun to work on and I love to reread it, but I'll admit that when left to my own devices I will just rabbit-hole down any individual property and tear it to pieces just to have something to do.

mamiko sighs / doesn’t startle as she usually would when she’s surprised. she doesn’t even know how long she’s been sitting out here / cross-legged in the dirt, staring in the general direction of the area she had last seen uchiha izuna. she sighs, “ i’m to be married. ” she didn’t know cahaya or yasei were there / so deep into her own thoughts and head.  not that she has really anything against marriage / but mamiko is not in love with her to be husband / and he is not in love with her. “ asahi and i- basically we’ve been betrothed since he was born, but in a vague, loose sense. ” she doesn’t really have to explain anything / under the belief that cahaya also knows things like she knows things. still she does anyways / because sometimes, talking about things help.  “ asahi is nice and kind and loyal --- but he’s okay. ” he’s no uchiha izuna, that’s for sure. “ it is rare for a boy to be born into a healing faction. my mother fought tooth and nail for that betrothal between the two of us. see, when two factions come together, it’s based on who can help each other the most -- nothing like love, or want or anything like that. ” she pauses, digs her chin deeper into the palm of her hand and breathes out. “ he’s from a healer faction -- a great healer. i’m from a fuinjutsu faction. theoretically, they want to see if they can push healing into scrolls so when we’re in a fight, we can open said scroll, and be at full health, instead of being hurt or harmed or whatever. ”   she pauses long enough for that to digest, “ but we are not in love with each other. we grew up with one another, but --- cahaya, tell me what you know about the curse of love. ” probably not as much as he should be aware for the uchiha’s curse of hatred. “ once an uzumaki is in love, they are in love for life. there is no moving on , no moving past, no nothing. we can be with other people, settle down, make homes, all that jazz ---- but we cannot fall in love with anyone else. that’s why you see uzumaki’s and they’re so ‘loose’ with their love. ”  another pause, then she sighs , lets shoulders drop and move her hands to the ground and tilts her head upwards to the canopy of leaves above her, “ our official leader killed any and every chance i had with the person i’m in love with. ” izuna, and here, her voice fills with venom, “ by getting mito-sama to marry that senju. ”  he knows / he should know / like she knows , that konoha doesn’t even bother to save uzushiogakure when the destruction and fires come. they take and they want and they use the uzumaki name that’s more feared in the lands for their own gain and uses, but lets kirigakure and iwagakure destroy them because they’ve gotten what they wanted.  a legacy born of terrifying power and the ability to seal away dangerous and non-dangerous entities without any decency or respect of the gods and powers they choose to use.  “ asahi is good though. he likes to fish. prefers that over healing. he’s not a fighter or anything. he’ll be kind to me. his true love died when we were kids. a little girl who died in a boating accident. still, he’s the redeemed son of the faction leader, and i, the redeemed daughter of the fuinjutsu clan. it’s truly a match. ” she leaves out the part where he's cursed with a heal-bite / and her, to be a cassandra amongst her own clanmates.

water country people are insane. first you got uzushio , who looks at the god/desses and goes : im gonna fuc* them , and then im gonna seal them away until i want/need them , and then on the other hand , you’ve got kiri , who looks at the monsters and goes : im gonna fuc* them and then i’m gonna let them roam in this land.  not a single brain cell is shared between kiri / uzu and i think that’s beautiful .

Uzumaki and Shinigami has a obvious but interesting connection in naruto.

It makes you wonder of the possibilities how Uzumaki Ancestor could have made a pact with the Shinigami long ago.

Maybe a love story even, or a deal. The Shinigami could literally be the Uzumakis ancestor that could explain how their lifespans are longer than most.

Maybe the Shinigami could also be the one who taught the first Uzumaki the way of the seals.

Explains the bloodlimit of chains and blood red hair. How the Uzumaki may often be believed as a clan that only resided in uzushio, but their shrines and temples could be found in places only those who have been family could know.

Imagine that although uzumakis have been believed to have disappeared, except for those who are widely known. They could hide among various seals, under the sea. Among those whirlpools without anyone knowing better.

Ive read few of Uzushio or Uzumaki centric stories. But if you look close enough you’d realize just how much the world lost when they have disappeared.

Then there’s also the connection between Uchiha and Uzumaki. Sometimes I suspect how unbelievably similar they are, than their supposed cousins with the senju. How from Narutos mother and sasuke to even themselves. The connection has been strong and there.

Uchiha and Uzumaki has been erased from that world. Pulled apart to be enemies cuz they knew that, the very moment they work together was scariest motherfucking thing youd see.

There's this weird realization I had a few dunno months ago

But the long lifespan an Uzumaki is and their obvious connection with the Shinigami or God of death - which we see with how they have a literal mask that allows them to call and invoke fear upon the shinigami ; im not sure. - is probably most likely connected. Which also probably has to do with their seals too and the reaper death seal and all that. I haven't thought too much else bout it and what it could imply but its interesting to think and dig deeper into.

This fic is goddamn captivating, addictive and lives rent free in my head 24/7. The Uzumaki lore and worldbuilding is goddamn iconic. Fuyuko/Sansa is utterly brilliant and herself with no exceptions or apologies. Kushina is only an active character for about a chapter and yet I love her desperately and she has more vivid emotions and opinions than 90% of people I know in real life.

I’ll leave you with a short quote from her, "I wish I could be here to teach you what that means, to teach you what being an Uzumaki of Uzushiogakure means... I wish I could teach you our history, our customs... Konoha won't teach you, I know they won't," Kushina couldn't help her bitter laugh, or the bitter tears that came with it. "All they'll care about is your loyalty to their village, not a dead one that they failed and now do their best to forget in their shame. You and your brother, you will be the last of our clan, the last of the Uzumaki... the last to hold the ruling heart of Uzushio inside you.”
