I need some clarity on some things. Not saying there aren’t any but I’m not seeing any 5%ers publicly addressing the divisive comments made by rapper lord Jamar about brown aka Hispanics 5%ers like he’s done to those like my Godbrother & enlightener Sunez Allah with this whole FBA scam shit that many black folks have adopted. I was a hip hop fan of his & the group bran Nubian in the early 90s & next to Rakim, Big daddy Kane, PRT… he played a part in inspiring my journey with knowledge of self. But throughout the years of getting the knowledge for myself, growing and evolving I can respectfully say that the things he’s said about Brown brothers & sisters who happen to be 5%ers like my brother Edward Sunez Rodriguez is NOT right and exact. If you know who the original man is and you know your lessons as well as the science break down to universal flag, you would know that he or anyone black or brown or 5% is in error of their ways if they think like him. I also don’t think people go from being righteous to being racist or bigoted or jealous or haters over night. These are traits where no matter your tribe, ethnicity, or nation have laid dormant or hidden in your character flaws. That’s how savages and bloodsuckers of the poor move. Not those who are all wise and civilized & know that “original “ means “Original.” And righteous person means righteous and not religious. Tariq Nasheed started this scam with putting black folks from America and outside the country against one another. Playing on the issue some of them have with one another. He then jumped into hip hop which you’ve never seen him being highly invested in doing with his attacks against non American blacks and brown brothers and sisters. Some of you fell for it and now it’s either manipulated your mind when you should have been wiser than a man who has a history of hustling and con manning off others people fear or character flaws. If your civilized through knowledge of self or your from NY, you really have no excuse for allowing an outsider of the culture you started (music) or home where the 5% started come and divide you. Tariq Nasheed and those who carry this mentality show and prove that a Devil who looks like you in your own community, our community can cause trouble amongst our/your own people. If you are a 5%er and you aren’t speaking out against people like this, no matter how long you’ve known them or how long they’ve had knowledge of self… you are not your brothers or sisters keeper and the lessons you’ve carried for years were just for show and tell and to recite like many gang members recite their literature laws but don’t follow. We call that a hypocrite or in Chicago we called it false flagging aka being something your not.
Sincerely, King Kamal Allah

22 years ago, photographer Gordon Parks gathered around 200 hip-hop artists outside a porch in Harlem to take a legendary photo called "A Great Day In Hip-Hop."In March 1998, when XXL magazine staff were just thinking about reworking the Great Day in Harlem photo, they had no idea how successful the photo would be. The first photograph of "A Great Day in Harlem," taken by Arthur Kane on August 12, 1958 for Esquire magazine, brought together 57 jazz legends outside a porch on East 126th Street in Harlem. The photo featured jazz performers such as Count Basie, Art Blakey, Johnny Griffin, Milt Hinton, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Oscar Pettiford, Sonny Rollins, Joe Thomas and others. This photo appeared in Esquire magazine in the January 1959 issue. On September 29, 1998, more than 200 people from the hip-hop world took part in the historic re-creation of XXL, who were placed on 3 bows in the same place as the original - they represented a new generation of cultural icons captured by the photographer for descendants. When the photo shoot was over, the crowd of rappers applauded with shouts of pride. The disassembled crowd of rappers continued to talk to their peers, their heroes and their fans. The photography process was not much different from jazz photography, but there were some key artists who weren't present. A frustrated Lauryn Hill arrived 10 minutes after the photo was taken, in a red Range Rover, driven by her beau Rohan Marley with her son Zion Marley in the back seat. A dejected Los Angeles-based Ras Kass who showed up too late asked if there were any ways in which he could be superimposed into the frame.List of famous rappers in the frame: Mack 10, Rakim, Fat Joe, E-40, Slick Rick, Wyclef Jean, Jermaine Dupri, Goodie Mob, Black Moon, Freddie Foxxx, Shaq, Fab 5 Freddy, Kasino, Channel Live, Pras , Peter Gunz, Flipmode Squad, Naughty By Nature, Shyheim, Kid Capri, UTFO, Xzibit, Da Brat, Willie D, The LOX, Nice & Smooth, Ed OG, Common, A Tribe Called Quest, Poor Righteous Teachers, Sticky Fingaz & X1, Canibus, De La Soul, DJ Scratch, Eightball & MJG, The Beatnuts, Tha Alkaholics, Lord Jamar, DJ Muggs, Queen Pen, Pee Wee, Heiroglyphics, Grandmaster Caz, Schooly D, Awesome Two, Andre Harrell, The Roots, Kurupt, Crucial Conflict, A +, Ultramagnetic MC's, MC Eight, Wu-Tang, Jungle Brothers, Jazzy Jeff, D Nice, Special K, T La Rock, Chuck Chillout, Kid Creole, Milk, MC Shan, Marley Marl, John Forte, Heather B, Black Star (Mos Def + Talib Kweli), Saafir, Cocoa Brovaz, Cam'Ron, Blahzay Blahzay, MC Serch, Big L, Scarface, Luke, Grandmaster Flash, Blondie, Kool Herc, Paula Perry, Jayo Felony, No Face, Twista & The Speedknot Mobstas, Nikki D, DJ Nabs, Jane Blaze, Kris Kross, Daddy-O, Tela, Pete Rock, Parental Advisory, Loon, DJ Hollywood, MC Breeze, Kool Moe Dee, DJ Clue, Richie Rich ...The photograph "A Great Day In Hip-Hop" was published on the cover of XXL magazine on December 8, 1998 with the headline "The Greatest Day In Hip-Hop History".

Seven.
We all clinked our glasses together, pre-drinks before we leave for the club “I just want to say! Let me say something bitches!” Sonita shouted “I want to say my sister” she looked at me “I know next year is about to be another good year for you! You are working so hard, and you’re going to be working even harder, you are a free, single woman. I am happy for you, and I am excited for your next album sis. To Robyn Rihanna Fenty” I cooed out raising my glass in the air “you all too kind, I have the best friends a girl can ask for. Next year will be about me, I am not going to put myself in that situation again, I am lucky that Rakim was a man to do it and to accept where we was going, I am not going to let my record label do that again but to us single bitches” we cheered and clinked glasses again, drinking the wine as I shimmied away. I bought my bitches to London, we going to bring in the New Year in the club, but pre-drinks are a must. I don’t care if I can buy drinks there, cheaper to start here then there anyways “Leandra! Put the damn music on, dang. Let’s get this party started and then we can go” she is the worst DJ to hand, feeling an arm around my shoulder “I love you” Mel sounds drunk already “oh no, you can’t be already!?” I spat, looking to the side of me “bitch my drinking started early, I started when I rolled out of bed and you made those waffles” this is not good “so I guess I am the person to be looking after you huh? You know I don’t like drunk people, I think you need to stay at home” she shook her head “no, I need to go and party with some beautiful British men, they better be showing out because I need to get some British dick” I snorted laughing “wow, well I think I will be the one to take it easy, thank the lord for Rich” he is the carer of the group now “happy new year to me” he laughed “and you boo” I winked at him.
I decided to go all out, I mean not so much but I wanted to look good for today, so I am wearing a tiny blush pink fur mini dress with a wrap around fur belt around my waist. I have glittery heels with sheer socks and fluffy white trim. I have my glam curls ready, my hair is laid, lips popping, I look good “I heard from Melissa you have a secret dick appointment?” Leandra blurted out “oh not that skinny guy? The one at the concert?” Jen remembers “I never said a thing! I don’t tell your secrets” Mel is drunk, of course she is talking “not a dick appointment, she is a liar. I hate when she is drunk, stay away from me. Uhm, we just met up. That is it” I pointed at Jen; she is smirking “but you left the concert with him?” She needs to stop putting two and two together “we are here, now be quiet” Rich slid the door open “it’s so cold in London!” Jen spat as she got out first, it is actually freezing here. Shuffling off of the seat and stepping out of the car, pulling my mini dress down and there is a few paparazzi here, of course I mean why wouldn’t there be “Rihanna!” they shouted constantly, I started to walk off to the club as they continued to shout, Rich walking alongside me. I did think they would have got in my way, but they didn’t, I am thankful to be inside.
I shrieked out “hey boo!” hugging Adele “how are you? I thought I would sneak over and see you, are you ok? I heard about the breakup, I loved you both together but it’s mutual” nodding my head “it is, we happy but you look so good!” I shouted, her dress is bomb “not as beautiful as you, happy new year. Speak to you soon” she waved at me as she walked off, there is a lot of celebrities here, I am shocked. I didn’t think there would have been so many celebrities but there is. I don’t think there is any none famous people here, feeling a tug at my arm. Looking to the side of me, seeing where Sonita is pointing. Future raised his glass to me, waving at him. He then pointed at himself and then me, I nodded my head either way because I have a song I need him on, he will add the added spice I need on it. I assumed he would come but no, his whole entourage came, it’s like the whole club just moved, lord have mercy I didn’t ask for that. Placing my wine glass down, Future eventually was in my section “Riri, hey!” hugging him “hey you, been ignoring me!?” I said, moving back from the hug “oh what? No, I have been busy” I snorted “busy making babies with the sixth woman” he laughed out, he knows I am right “this is my cousin, Deavon. He likes you so I was like we going, you coming” I am impressed “he better looking then you, hi” I am so formal I shook his hand, he is handsome “so this is why I ignore your calls but what is up? What can I help you with” I didn’t want to talk work on this day, but I will “my album, your voice?” Future smirked “now, I am busy” poking my lips out trying to not smile “you saying no to me?” he licked his lips smiling “ok, I got you? Happy, I got you now” he hugged me again “that is all it took nigga! Come on!” he is stupid.
I am excited for the new year to come in, smiling at the big screen as the countdown went to ten “eight, seven, six, five” I shouted along with Mel and Sonita hugging me “three, two one! Happy New Year!” we all shouted, hugging both of my friends as the cheers rang through. I am happy, like I couldn’t be happier with my situation then I am right now, I think I needed that freedom. I was feeling depressed and now I am me again “woo!” I clapped, Future never left the section I am in for whatever reason but it doesn’t bother me, he is ok as a friend and from afar “happy new year riri” hugging him “and you boo” his cousin really likes me, he is stood just smiling “happy new year” I said to him “can I have a picture?” he asked in the middle of this “sure” waving him over, I might as well. It looks like Future is looking to go, getting closer to him. He leaned down a little, so I rested my arm on his shoulder as he took the selfie, moving my hair to the side “take another” turning to him and kissing his cheek “oh my god! Thank you” smiling at him as I moved away “aye, where the drinks at. Besides Mel! Everyone better be drinking” I pointed, Mel has had enough “I am banning your ass” Mel hugged me as she laughed out.
I did think Future was going but he didn’t we are having shots together now, I ain’t drunk so there is that. I know what I am doing anyways “Leandra!” I spat; she is always taking a video. Putting a finger up at her “actually, take a picture of us” digging into my bag, grabbing my phone from my bag and holding it out to Leandra “when are you going back to California so we can link for the album?” Future asked “I am going Miami actually but I think around two weeks, I am staying here for a while and then travelling, I have some ventures here” pointing at my phone so Leandra can take a picture, Future leaned into me “you better get my best side!” I shouted; she is a bitch at times. She took the picture of us and held the phone out to me “thank you” ok I look good I will take that “I apologise for not responding to you though” least he is sorry “it’s ok” I smiled at him, uploading the image onto Instagram, captioning the picture ‘New year, New music’ pressing send on the image “what you doing after this?” can Future not ask “bed?” side eyeing him “no, I ain’t saying it like that. Because Diddy is throwing a party here too, so I was asking if you going to do that” I assumed something else there “oh no, I am having to take care of that drunk girl there” Mel is a mess, she really is.
It’s like I can’t escape her, I really can’t. How do I end up in magic city and I hear come and put your name on it, I swear I just had to mean mug the stripper, I just cannot escape her. I went to the club before this and they had we found love, it’s like a constant reminder and it made me want to drink more, I can’t escape her at all. I am staring at this stripper and it’s like I am imagining her, like I can see Robyn just there in front of me. It is literally driving me crazy; I am at work I hear her and I be walking and I hear her. I go to my apartment I hear her and now this, drinking from the Patron bottle “enough for you” Seiko moved the bottle back “for me? Or?” she is annoying, getting up from the seat, this stripper is one hundred percent no Rihanna, besides this strippers boobs are big, she winked at and I just turned around “come on” hitting Barry’ shoulder, I need some air right now because I just can’t even deal right now. Seiko wasn’t supposed to be here, she wasn’t supposed to come but she did. She doesn’t mind coming with me to a strip club either, she’s a good girl and I like that but she’s not that.
Standing to the side and lighting my cigarette “we out here in the cold, the fuck?” Barry said, “I am sick of hearing her voice” blowing the smoke out from my lips “you still on that, you said nothing happened?” smiling at Barry “we had sex all weekend, I just didn’t want to say it to TJ. He has a big mouth” Barry’ mouth fell open “no way!? No way? You’re lying” shaking my head with my cigarette between my lips “no way? You had sex with” he looked around him “you had sex with Rihanna?” he said in a loud whisper “I did, all weekend. Pussy is good bro, like really good” Barry hit my arm jumping up and down “it good? Like you taste it, she let you do it all? For real, you go in raw? So you fucked ASAP Rocky girl, nigga you are the boss, oh my god. I am losing my fucking mind, you had sex with her. So it’s good pussy?” nodding my head laughing “good, and she gave me head too, shit. She was up for it all, like bro. I could just give her a look and we just be fucking, like tongue down my throat shit. But she is good, like I can’t compare. Now having sex with Seiko, ain’t it. I need to drop her, I can’t stop thinking of Robyn bro, I can’t shake it off” I really can’t “pussy on your mind that much? Just go and get it again? I mean what does she care” I sniggered “listen here right, she went crazy on my ass. She won’t speak to me because I have Seiko around yeah, so she wants to be with me. She said she thought it was a crush, but she loves me, she kept saying it. I held back, then she went crazy talking about you don’t care. I am here, I am trying to take it in. I can’t take it in when you are riding my dick, you know?” Barry snorted laughing “so yeah, that weekend was interesting. It was good, if I get locked up right now I will go back a happy man. On god” Barry is shocked “love? So you want to leave Seiko for her, you can just lie and still get it?” shaking my head “I ain’t happy with Seiko, she on my dick about shit. Like why is she here, I tried to split with her and she took it for a joke, maybe I am a joke but I” I paused “I miss her” Barry furrowed his eyebrows “you miss that Barbados pussy, that is what you want” shaking my head “nah, see. I feel something for her, I really do. We are good together but it’s like she’s hard to reach? It’s hard to explain, it’s not all about the sex, I am just shocked that we did have sex, you know” I haven’t actually spoke on this to anyone until now.
“You cheated on me again!?” my eyes bulged out looking to the side of me, Seiko is right there just barking “who cheated?” Barry said “him!” she ran at me and started to hit at my chest “relax! I ain’t cheat” moving back, throwing my cigarette to the ground “you know what, I did” it’s out now, we can split “Barbados? Mhm, oh. This nigga had sex with Rihanna!” She screamed out, I felt anger hit me “shut the fuck up, you stupid fucking bitch” Barry got between us because I was ready strangle the bitch “can we all calm down, nobody had any sex with Rihanna. Damn, we wish we all could. He is joking” Barry is calming it down, but I am angry “it’s over Seiko, we are over. You’re dumped, also your ass is stuck here because I am your ride back” walking around Barry “I will scream so loud about you and that fucking bitch, you have changed since you met her again. Love struck speaking on Rihanna, this nigga fucked Rihanna” I lunged at her, gripping her neck and the next sound I hear is sirens, right at that moment and she screamed for help. I moved away from here “you dead, you fucking whore. You a dead bitch” walking off “let’s just move now, come on. Seiko just drop it. He is drunk” I ain’t even drunk and that is the point, she mentions Robyn’ name I am going to kill her “is everything ok here?” the police officer asked, I was waiting for Seiko to say something but she didn’t “usual party vibes” she said “my stupid boyfriend” now why she saying that, I broke up with her “let’s go” Barry patted my back for us to go.

MY TAKE: 1,300 WORDS ON JAY ELECTRONICA’s ‘A WRITTEN TESTIMONY’
After 11 years of anticipation, Jay Electronica finally released an official study album, A Written Testimony featuring Jay-Z who was playing the role Ghostface Killah did for Raekwon on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.
Jay-Z was the co-star; the Scottie Pippen to Michael Jordan; the one who complimented the headliner, assisting him in a win, and this album most certainly was a win.
Now I make the point of listing Jay-Z as a co-pilot in this audio journey because many in the Internet realm want to say Jay-Z "lyrically murdered" Electronica on his own shit. Ironically, something Nas claimed happened to Jay Z on the Renegade song years ago.
That didn't happen. Jay-Z did what he was supposed to do, he collaborated with an emcee who captured his ear and mind back in 2010.
This was not Watch The Throne, Part II. To say such a thing is to disrespect what Jay-Z and Kanye West created in 2011. A Written Testimony was the overdue, formal introduction to the rap world Hip-hop's resident Willy Wonka - Jay Elect - the man who creates endless wonders while staying aloof. Jay Electronica is a real-life James Bond, a man who shook the Hip Hop world when he released the game-changing "Exhibit C", dated and fathered a child with Erykah Badu, sparked a bidding war between Puff Daddy and Sean Carter based on the strength of a couple singles, the man who disappeared for years, and was romantically linked to an heiress from the Rothschild family.
YEAH, this man is a legend.
But those exploits coupled with several loose singles and two mixtapes were not enough to satisfy the appetite of hungry Hip Hop listeners, eager to devour the sounds of a man from New Orleans, Louisiana who is, lyrically, more like Rakim Allah than Soulja Slim ... and still, Jay Elect pay homage to his NO influences throughout the album (see "Ghost of Soulja Slim", in particular). How can a Southern emcee come on the scene without having a stereotypical sound of a New Orleans rapper? He doesn't sound like Master P nor does he follow the path of Lil Wayne. No. Jay Elect made his trail unique; distancing himself from the pack.
After 10 years of waiting, Jay Electronica announced his album WOULD be released in Match 2020. Now a lot has changed since 2010 when the original album was meant to come, and during that time tastes change and even the most loyal fans lost faith that it would happen.
Was this real? Was Jay Electronica gonna drop or was this another instance where an artist over-promised and under-delivered?
Finally, Friday the 13th, March 2020 A Written Testimony was released and the internet was flooded with the full gamut of emotions ranging from exhilaration to disappointed (can't please the internet critics or Joe Budden) to a renewed faith in the man of legendary reputation.
Yes, people were pleased to hear that Jay-Z is still one of the best in the game, today, but for me, I was delighted to hear Jay Electronica slay the sound-waves. This 10 track album not only reinforced my appreciation for Jay Electronica; it made me want to study his lyrics; dissect these testaments to its very root.
The introductions to (1) The Overwhelming Event and (2) Ghost oF Soulja Slim featuring sound bytes of Louis Farrakhan speaking to the masses about the Black people in America being real children of Israel; the recipients of God's promise to bless the descendants of Abraham caused dissent from Hip Hop critics and listeners alike who felt the Nation of Islam leader's alleged anti-Semitic comments have no place in a rap album. Those people forget that Jay Electronica is a member of the Nation of Islam.
WRITER'S NOTE: All of those critics are silent when rappers say of Nigga or calling Black women "bitch" and "ho". Where are they during those moments of controversy? Hmmm. This is a conversation for another time.
Controversy aside, the lyrical wordplay on display should have silenced any nonbeliever.
(2) Ghost of Souljah Slim starts off the album right with both men trading verses, and more importantly Electronica showing that he can hold his own with Sean Carter.
(3)The Blinding has Jay Electronica talking about the hesitancy to release his music to an audience that will undoubtedly pick apart his work rather than enjoy it for what it is. (4) Neverending Story is where Jay Elect laces an Alchemist beat with the tale of his come-up from humble beginnings and hostile surrounding to still being chosen by God; bestowed with divine greatness.
(5) Shiny Suit Theory showcases Elect rhymes over a self-produced song proclaiming his forthcoming rise in the world of rap.
(6) Universal Soldier has both men share tales of their rise from hardship and criminal lifestyle to gaining knowledge of self and ultimately overcoming the hurdles placed before them
(7) Flux Capacitor has Jay Elect speaking on a preordained calling upon him to bring superior lyricism and teachings to the world while representing New Orleans.
(8) Fruits Of The Spirits is a song detailing the long wait for this debut album, Electronica lets the listener know that it was all part of his master plan for just like Thanos (from the Marvel Comics), he can defeat any competition with the snap of his fingers.
(9) Ezekiel's Wheel ties into the Biblical story of Ezekiel, the warrior who was placed by God to be the prophet over Israel, Jay Electronica declares himself to be a prophet to the children of Israel, whom Farrakhan, in the album intro stated were the Black people in America.
(10) A.P.I.D.T.A. (All Praise Is Due To Allah) is my personal favourite is a song dealing with the loss of loved ones. According to reports, this song was written on the same night Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant died in a tragic helicopter crash in February 2020. Wow.
On this sombre track, Jay Electronica offers lamentations over the loss of his beloved Mother, speaking of how her departure from this physical form has cut him to his soul, rendering his spirit wounded.
Eyes fiery, cry tears to my diary Sometimes a Xanny bar can't help you fight back the anxiety I go to my Lord quietly, teardrops on our faces Teardrops on my face, it's like teardrops become waterfalls by the time they reach my laces My eyelids is like levees but my tear ducts is like glaciers As I contemplate creation, the salt that heals my wounds pour out my eyes just like libations I can't stop my mind from racing, I got numbers on my phone Pictures on my phone The day my mama died, I scrolled her texts all day long The physical returns but the connection still stay strong
Jay Elect later rhymes,
Sleep well The last time that I kissed you, you felt cold but you looked peaceful I read our message thread when I get low and need a refill
All controversy and delay aside, Jay Electronica delivered a debut album that rivals that of your favourite MCs. FUCK Joe Budden and anybody who disagrees. I'm still waiting on Joe to release one record as meaningful as Elect's worst. Anyway, I digress.
In an era where the word Classic has lost its meaning thanks to the overuse of fans and critics alike, I won't give it that distinction, at this time. I do, however, feel this album will go down as one of the more significant releases of the last 10 years. This is evidence of substance over style. No commercials tracks. No filler. Just two talented men delivering lyrical food to a hungry audience in need of manna from heaven rather than the pursuit of bread ($$$).
And man cannot live on bread alone. Peace God. Holler at me

There have been times when I’ve wondered if Black Thought should be in the running for #goat emcee. This video is one of those times. My friend and colleague, drummer Morgan Childs, actually transcribed these amazing rhymes: Uh I’m sorry for your loss it’s somebody dead in a car and it’s probably one of yours The writin’ all across the window and the walls Whether it was true or false We shouldn’t have got involved Remember We walked past the teacher take the chalk and laugh We wrote punishments “I will not talk in class” Now it’s pistols punishing people for talking fast And all these innocent bystanders is haulin’ ass I hate to say “I told y’all” but I told y’all Things fall apart when the center to weak to hold y’all I’m just collecting what you owe to my owe jar You ‘bout to get swooped down on and stoled on Fools swear they wise, wise men know they foolish but we was headed for the web even before computers I never thought you’d give me a reason to do this Cain and Abel Jesus and Judas Caesar and Brutus I see intruders avert yer eyes I told you keep out of the hood Circumcise How could you sleep, I thought you always was the first to rise Eyo you heard the line Errybody plays the fool Well I be that exception to the rule The principal that hand deliver lessons to the school I was makin’ major moves My dollar déjà vu My mission when my ambition was brandishin’ the tool to be an icon wearin’ slippers made of python Get mine quicker ‘cause I’m slick as a pipeline Transportin’ the oil tribulation and toil hit the operation but I’m back in the soil Got my crown tilted, my gown quilted silk with cashmere burn the room down in a minute, built it last year Newsflash, I dodged the bullet that killed the cashier My homie told me to come with him to the masthead Them brothers said don’t go from written bars filled with rage to prime time television and your gilded cage Then forget there’s people in the world still enslaved I bar white at my wrist, and let it fill the page Gunfire and flare Sirens glare I’m in an iron chair with people who care don’t get the lion’s share When I don’t give a fuck then I ain’t fair I’m on a higher table people getting’ money like the finest hair Catch the herald I’m fresh chopped and beveled rap on a doctorate level so F Scott Fitzgerald Maybe I’m the new Rakim Maybe I’m Fab Pharoah Undergarments are armor be my intimate apparel Pre-Kardashian Kanye My rhyme play immaculate Same cadence as D.O.C. pre-accident Maybe my acumen is on par with Gucci rappin’ and gimme the proper respect motherfucker we back again For a couple things we lost in a fire the drive and desire to perform on a higher plateau I make that show lost in a mire Wondering how we got so far from inspired Look, when photos were sepia toned and record players were something you would keep in your home Yo the traveller the meanin’ Tariq he was known For the exemplary performance, uniquely his own I made the 21 pound for some a newfound religion When money’s put down there’s only one sound to make OGs and young lions equally proud to listen To seek what amalgam-ism an algorithm comin’ from where only kings and crowns permitted to darkness Where archaeologists found my image in parchment rolled into a scroll holdin’ a message for you It said the only thing fo sho is taxes death and trouble The anomaly, sworn solemnly high snobbery Freakinomics and war policy dichotomy That’s Heaven and Hades Tigris and Euphrates His highness, the apple of the iris to you ladies As babies we went from simolac to infomill to the internet and fentanyl when our consent was still against the will I got that detox for y’all The microphone doctor black Deepak Chopra I’m a griot that make you want to peacock your arm every heavy dignitary payin’ me top regards boy I’m three octaves far from the bi noc ulars so the smart money feelin’ get the heat out the car yo I’m K dot Lamar meets Tupac Shakur Got profiled by a few cops too hot to charge, listen somebody said a price tag was on a rapper’s head so we gonna see a nice bag when a rapper dead the mast black the flag green black and red they probably wave a white flag out the prasma shed (?) no doubt Yo the Game went they own route I can’t explain what these lame kids is talmbout Or how they fit they whole foot into their own mouth I put a couple bodies in a brown bag then I’m en route I’m sneaker shoppin’ with my stuntas size 8 prior to they release, cuz why wait? Look, in my state I got electrified gates for these blasé gods hatin’ at a high rate ‘cause I dodged fate then got great to fly straight if we ain’t family or friends then we don’t vibrate and I’m that Gun in yah face none of y’all safe If I catch you at the right time in the wrong place Slippin’ Sipping on somethin’ with a strong taste Like whiskey or bootleg bourbon with a corn base (Malavine?) take resemble a vehicular threat The mic I spray resemblin’ a sickle of death It ain’t strenuous to come from a continuous breath I set fire to the venue Imma spin you in step Rinse repeat You checkin’ for the sound of the beats I’m the hound I’m a creep I get down Imma eat Imma keep sumpin’ and lay a naysayer to sleep playin’ wit heat nobody and nothin’ fucking with ‘Riq yo these weaklings is claiming they cutting up in the streets Nigga peace You ain’t workin’ with nuttin’ but the police, listen you ain’t feelin’ to be nothin’ but the deceased, listen you in the tournament with a permanent crease I strike fear in the hearts of rap figures who mind bears the stigmas of time no black privilege From Boom Bap niggas To trap niggas you in the trap wit us When the lines is as vivid as the walls on that grab all the graph by the law to rap I reside between the seconds on the chronograph How much more CB4 can we afford? It’s like a sharia law On My Cherie Amour How much hypocrisy can people possibly adore? But ain’t nobody workin’ on a cure? I mar ears like Obama I wish he had another four years Y’all some jolly good Hollywood squares I’m like “ahem” approach the author witcha offering I smoke rappers writin’ like my only offspring Being his excellency is to be exhausting You in the residency, you’re the one they call King Dolla Ali Baba the talented Mr Trotter Inside of my right palm the marker to stick My the big papa wig chopper Enter the Jaffe Jocker mawfucker I’m stronger than the coffee out in Kaffa All y’all make his vagina hot remind me of my kinda pop I step into the booth I’m a bull inside a china shop Mollywhopper washin’ of a cotton pickin body drop Every time we rock, yo they actin’ like it’s Mardi Gras Til the party stop ‘sgirl was like she there for rory gel (the fuck?) For the last decade or so, LOKI SINISTER has gone from a street thug kid in New York to a rising television star on ADULT SWIM NETWORK with “NEWS READERS”, a quarter-hour block of comedy lampooning the news magazine genre. In addition to acting, he has a few other projects in the music world dropping soon. Here are all the details straight from the man himself….
OO: Having ties to both, the hip hop and hardcore scenes, as well as many other genres as well as other forms of media; you have been able to see the evolution of the genres joining forces. Can you talk a little bit about what you have seen and what you think for the future?
LS: MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN A LARGE INFLUENCE IN MY LIFE. COMING FROM A RACIALLY MIXED BACKGROUND(MY FATHER IS AFRICAN-AMERICAN & MY MOTHER IS OF SCOTTISH DESCENT), I WAS INTRODUCED TO A LARGE VARIETY OF MUSIC AT AN EARLY AGE. SOME OF MY EARLIEST MEMORIES ARE OF BEING IN MY PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS CADILLAC LISTENING TO MOTOWN & BLUES. BANDS LIKE THE CHI-LITES, THE TEMPTATIONS, THE 4-TOPS, BILLIE HOLLIDAY, RAY CHARLES AND B.B. KING. MY MATERNAL GRAND MOTHER WOULD PLAY THE PIANO AND SING A LOT OF CATHOLIC HYMNS TO ME. MY MOTHER WAS AN AVID LOVER OF WHAT I GUESS WOULD BE CONSIDERED FOLK ROCK, CLASSICAL & OPERA. THE BEATLES AND LUCIANO PAVAROTTI BEING AMONG HER FAVORITE. MY DAD ON THE OTHER HAND WAS A DJ IN COLLEGE AND SOUL & FUNK WAS HIS MAIN VIBE. HE REALLY DUG CHAKA KHAN, STEVIE WONDER, EARTH WIND & FIRE, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, STUFF LIKE THAT. I’VE ALWAYS BEN AN AVID FAN OF WHAT WAS AT THE TIME CONSIDERED “UNDERGROUND MUSIC.” IT’S SAFE TO SAY I FOUND MY OWN WAY IN MUSIC IN 1987. I WAS WATCHING SOUL TRAIN AND ERICK B. & RAKIM CAME ON. MY JAW DROPPED AND I WAS HOOKED! THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME AT A SHOW THE SAME YEAR IN WASHINGTON D.C. THE FIRST TIME I SAW THE BAD BRAINS PERFORM(WHICH TO THIS DAY IS MY FAVORITE GROUP HANDS DOWN. UNFORTUNATELY BACK THAN AND FOR MANY YEARS LATER, FOR MOST PEOPLE, THEIR MUSICAL EXPOSURE WAS LIMITED TO WHAT WAS ON THE RADIO, MTV OR WHAT THEIR FRIENDS LISTENED TO. THE GAME TODAY AND FOR THE LAST DECADE OR SO HAS CHANGED DRASTICALLY. PRIMARILY DUE TO THE INTERNET. PEOPLE CAN NOW SEARCH AND LISTEN TO, SEARCH AND FIND JUST ABOUT ANYTHING OUT THERE NOWADAYS ON THEIR iPhones, TABLETS, LAPTOPS ETC. I THINK THAT’S AWESOME! AS FOR THE FUTURE, BECAUSE OF ALL THIS(AND THE PRESENCE OF ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING) I BELIEVE ARTISTS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET EVEN MORE CREATIVE IN TERMS OF MARKETING THEIR MUSIC AND SALES.
OO: What projects are you currently involved with?
LS: FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS I’VE BEN INVOLVED IN ACTING. THAT’S MY THING. AS OF THIS DATE THE LAST SHOW I WORKED ON IS A SHOW ON THE ADULT SWIM NETWORK CALLED NEWSREADERS. I HAVE WORKED ON A FEW SONGS JUST LATELY THOUGH FOR FUN. I’VE COMPLETED A TRACK WITH MY MAN LORD WILLIN OUT OF PROVIDENCE, RI. AND I’M WORKING ON ANOTHER JOINT WITH MY HOMEBOY JOREL FROM HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD & ALSO MY BROTHA SKAM DUST!
OO: What would be your ‘Dream Project’ or have you already been able to do your ‘Dream Project’?
LS: IN THAT REGARD I FEEL LIKE I’VE BEEN REALLY BLESSED LATELY. ALMOST EVERY TIME I’M ON SET I’M DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT OR WORKING WITH SOMEONE I’VE ADMIRED PROFESSIONALLY. FROM RIDING HARLEYS IN A SCENE IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES, TO BEING PART OF A PRISON BREAK RUNNING OUT OF A STRUCTURE IN THE DESERT AS THE WALL IS BLOWN OUT WITH EXPLOSIVES, WORKING ALONG SIDE PEOPLE LIKE WILL SMITH, FOREST WHITAKER, JOE MANTEGNA, HALLE BERRY & DANNY TREJO IS PRETTY FUCKIN COOL!
OO: What is your motto in life?
LS: “NEVER STOP PURSUING YOUR GOALS. WHEN YOUR BODY BECOMES TIRED, KEEP STRIVING ONWARD WITH SHEER WILL & DETERMINATION. ” – LOKI SINISTER
OO: Do you still get nervous before a show? If so, how do you relax?
LS: AH MAN, A LONG TIME AGO I SUNG FOR A BAND CALLED CIRCLE OF VIOLENCE, OUT OF NEW JERSEY. WHEN I WAS NERVOUS BECAUE THE CROWD WASN’T REACTING I USED TO TAKE A HUGE METAL WRENCH AND FLING IT OUT INTO THE AUDIENCE. IT GOT PEOPLE MOVING. I THINK THE LAST TIME I SUNG ON STAGE THOUGH, WAS DOING A SONG WITH MY BOY’S IN H2O CALLED “GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION” I SUNG MY BRO, FREDDY MADBALL’S PART IN IT.
OO: What is the most trouble you have ever gotten in thus far in life?
LS: I’M GONNA HAVE TO SWITCH THIS QUESTION UP A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE I REALLY LIKE MY FREEDOM AND DO NOT WISH TO IMPLICATE MYSELF IN ANYTHING. SO LET’S GO WITH THIS “WHAT IS THE MOST TROUBLE YOU HAVE GOTTEN ‘OUT OF’ THUS FAR IN LIFE?” THERE WAS A TIME, LONG AGO WHEN I WAS A REAL KNUCKLE HEAD AND WOULD DO REALLY DUMB SHIT LIKE SMOKE ANGEL DUST WITH MY FRIENDS. THIS ONE PARTICULAR TIME MY HOMIE GOT JUMPED FOR HIS GOLD CHAIN. I RAN UP ON THE DUDE, AND STARTED BEATING HIM INTO SUBMISSION. HIS BUDDY PULLED A KIFE AND STABBED ME IN THE BACK OF THE NECK(ROUGHLY A 1/4″ OVER AND I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEN PARALYZED). ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT AT THE TIME IS IF I DON’T TAKE THIS GUY OUT HE’S GONNA KILL ME. I GRABBED HIS HEAD AND REPEATEDLY BASHED HIS SKULL AGAINST THE BRICK WALL BEHIND HIM AS I WAS PASSING OUT AND GOING DOWN SO WAS HE AND I REMEMBER THE TRAIL OF DARK RED BLOOD GOING DOWN THE WALL AS WE BOTH FELL AND PASSED OUT. I AWOKE QUITE SOME TIME LATER IN THE HOSPITAL, HANDCUFFED TO THE BED WITH DETECTIVES WAITING. NOW THERE WERE THREE THINGS AT THE TIME THAT WERE VERY FORTUNATE FOR ME. ONE, THERE WERE WITNESSES AT THE SCENE THAT SAW THE ATTEMPTED ROBBERY. TWO, THE POLICE DIDN’T KNOW THAT I WAS HIGH ON PCP. THREE, I WOKE UP. HE DIDN’T. SELF DEFENSE.
OO: In the Hollywood Undead song ‘Undead’ they reference you:
Version # 1:
White boys with tattoos we are pointing right at you
We are breaking everything, rowdy like a classroom
Pack of wolves cause we don\’t follow the rules
And when you\’re running your mouth our razor blades come out
But why you always pressing? You know I\’m never stressed it
With fuckin DMS, Johnny to my left
Got Phantom and the rest, who are down to rep the west
I grew up by drive-by\’s and L.A gang sides
Or
Version # 2:
White boys with tattoos we are pointing right at you
We are breaking everything, rowdy like a classroom
Pack of wolves cause we don\’t follow the rules
And when you\’re running your mouth our razor blades come out
But why you always pressing? You know I\’m never stressed it
With Loki DMS, Johnny to my left
Got Phantom and the rest, who are down to rep the west
I grew up by drive-by\’s and L.A gang sides.
Which is correct? Do you know?
LS: I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH VERSION IS CORRECT. ALL I KNOW IS THAT I LOVE THAT THEY DID IT! IT ALLOWED ME TO HAVE SEX WITH A LOT OF THEIR FEMALE FANS! HAHAHA! ON ANOTHER NOTE… I TRY NOT TO PARTY WITH THEM ON THEIR TOUR BUS AFTER SHOWS ANYMORE BECAUSE I END UP, WAKING UP IN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT CITIES! OOOPPPPFFFF!
OO: What is the one thing you wanted as a kid and never got that you would still fork out some dough to get?
LS: SOPHIA LOREN! I’D GIVE ANYTHING FOR HER! BADDEST CHICK EVER!

Good Jay-Z vs. Evil Jay-Z: A history
Jay-Zreleased album No. 13 on Friday. The project, 4:44, is a return to form:No I.D.’s production is sounding good so far, and fans are responding favorably across the board to the album’s confessional lyrics and pop culture zingers. These days though, we hear more about Jay-Z in the context of Tidalmishaps rather than his music.
Since he “retired” as a rapper way back in 2003, Jay-Zhas had major ups and downs as a celebrity(See: Lemonade.) He’ll excite hip-hop culture with an inspired performance on a remix, but then release clunker albums.
As we spend our day trying to re-download Tidal, lets look back at all the good and evil Jay-Z spells.
Good Jay-Z
Music from 1996 to 2003 Theres no doubtthat Jay-Z earned his place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame as one of the biggest rappers in history. His 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt went platinum with no major label record deal and featured his friend, the legendary Biggie Smalls. Hes won 21 Grammys, and three of his recordsare on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The list of Jay-Z hits is long, including “Izzo,” “Hard Knock Life,” “I Cant Get Wid Dat,” and countless others. Theres a reason his nickname is Hov, short for Jay-Hovahe’s a rap god.
He seems to be a good dad We dont have any real way to prove this, but the GIFs and photos of Jay-Z with Blue Ivy make him seem like a loving father.
Of course just like any good dad, Jay-Z doesnt really *get* Twitter, and has rapped a fair amount of dad lines. Take this verse from Tom Ford from 2013’sMagna Carta album: Fuck hashtags and retweets, 140 characters in these streets.
Oh, Dad.
Screengrab via Clevver News/YouTube
He signedsome of the best artists Music todaywouldnt be the same without Jay-Z putting on some of the best artists around. Were forever indebted to him for bringing us Rihanna. Today he runs Roc Nation, founded in 2008, which represents new and old artists we love like Vic Mensa, T.I., and Big Sean. He’s not just here for hip-hop and rap artists either. The entertainment label also managesfavorites like Haim, Grimes, and Shakira. For all his failed prodigies (Memphis Bleek, anyone?), he also unsheathed Kanye West upon the world.
Jay-Z is the supportive dad behind the scenes for so many artists, even if hes not signing them. In a few of his recent tweets he shouted out everyone from Snoop Dogg to Playboi Carti. Hes keeping up with the times and giving his support to the otherrappers, regardless of generation.
Thank you to all the people that have inspired me . Rakim KANE KRS chuck cube Jaz Em Andre Nas big PAC cole kendrick chance jayE ..wait,
— Mr. Carter (@S_C_) June 16, 2017
I promise I'm not drunk . Lord Pusha . Carti (Magnolia incredible)ASAP Sean P , Mobb , cudi . Tyler , earl, Snoop!!( almost played myself)
— Mr. Carter (@S_C_) June 16, 2017
2013’s Pound Cake This collaboration with Drake was money, a standout recent track that shows he’s still got it. In the song Jay-Z raps that he’s made more millionaires than the lotto did. Dame made millions, Biggs made millions. Ye made millions, Just made millions. Lyor made millions, Cam made millions. Jay-Z doesnt just make money for himself, hes making sure everyone gets a slice of that cake. (Way back in 2010, Jay-Z likewise helped usher in the age of Drake when he performed on his major label debut album.)

Kevin Durant Jay-Zmight have sold his stake with the Nets, but his business insports hasnt ended. The mogulfounded Roc Nation Sports back in 2013, and the company represents NBA champ, Warriors forward, and University of Texas alum Kevin Durant. Truly a slam dunk investment by Mr. Carter.

Evil Jay-Z
Music from 2003 to 2013 Save a handful of tracks from Watch the Throne, Jay-Zs bars havent been what they used to be. Some of the songs are boringand others completely miss the mark. The Blueprint III still hurts. Sorry Jigga.
Cheating on Beyonc The world watched Knowles sister Solange attack Jay-Z in an elevator at the 2014 Met Gala. We spotted the smoke, and whenLemonade came out in 2016, we really saw the fire. Beyonc’s latest, and most ambitious album gave us a raw glimpse into the lows of the Knowles-Carter marriage. It was a shock coming from a couple that is known for its high level of secrecy. When Beyonc’s voice cracks during “Sandcastles,” our hearts break. How could you hurt our Queen B like that Jay?
Screengrab via Beyoncevevo/YouTube
Tidal When Jay-Z tookover the music streaming company, and announced it to the world surrounded by mega artists like Nicki Minaj, Jack White, Daft Punk, and others, it seemed like artists couldfinally take back some of the power they allegedly lost from streaming services like Spotify. We all have started free trials when something we really wanted to hearhas an exclusive release through the app, but with so many bugs, a clunky layout, and a limited library, Tidal isnt worth the $19.99 a month for its “HiFi” sounds.
Screengrab via YouTube/Hollywood CIA
Some of Jay’s, um, lesser signings Jay-Z has put on some incredible artists, but with the good there are always a few bad eggs. Im looking at you J. Cole. The North Carolina rapper’s fans are insufferably sanctimonious, and while Jay-Z supports a lot of younger artists challenging the genre, Coleattracts some very puritan rap fans. (He’s the only rapper who apparently makes real hip-hop music these days.)
99 Problems Jay-Zmight be with the woman who invented feminism, but that doesnt mean his career hasnt containeda plentifulamount of misogyny. 99 Problems is one of Jay-Zs biggest hits, and one of his most annoying. In the song and video, Jay-Z addresses poignant points about racism and exploitation of black art, but ruins it by contrasting those issues with images of strippers and bitches.
Its a story as old as time, but unlike his wife, Jay-Z hasn’t used his fame to help us realize that black men aren’t the only ones subjected to those daily instances of violence. Black women encounter the same issues and yet are constantly reduced to “problems” not even worth having. Bey needs to upgrade his reading list with some Chimamanda.
Screengrab via MTV
There have been good Jay-Z moments and a healthy number of sinister ones, but who are we kidding? From his early days to now, Jay-Z has remained a powerful symbol of hustle, even in his evil times. Theres a photo of Jay-Z that represents this. Hes standing on the roofof his old stash house, staring at the new Barclays Center a few blocks away. Jaynot only performs at that center, but had his own money invested in Barclaysat the time. He is standing on his past, while looking directlyathis present and future. It’s the American dream:
Photo via Hip-Hop Wired
Today Jay-Z has the baddest wife in the game, is the second-richest man in hip-hop, and has managed to stay relevant across generations despite a constantly changing musiclandscapewhether thats through his own music or supporting other rappers of the moment. Hes a business, man.

Episode 135 : Airflow.
"How it took you thirty years just to sound aiiight?"
- Rustee Juxx
2020 continues...feels like all you can say! I didn't get chance to include any Malik B (RIP) last month, but have fixed it this time with a couple of his best verses, alongside other late greats like Sean P and Aaliyah, plus remembering some truly classic albums. Light on the new releases this time, we dig back into the crates...

Twitch : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
JoJo Pellegrino ft. Ghostface Killah and Raekwon : 3 Kings
Coming out of the gate strong on this single, with Ghostface owning the Yountie Tha Noize-produced track in the first few bars! That said, everyone does an excellent job on the mic, including Pellegrino, an MC from the same general area of Staten Island as many of the Wu-Tang - Ghost and Rae included. No pause for a hook, just lyrics on lyrics on lyrics.
[Alchemist] Twin & Alchemist : Different Worlds (Instrumental)
Ah, the early days of Alchemist! One of the most respected in the game, and one who has been associated with two highly significant crews from opposite sides of the country - the Soul Assassins from LA, and the Mobb Deep family in NYC. This is some of his fairly early work with the latter, a 12" from 2001; this beat is dope, but "Big T.W.I.N.S" on the flip is even better!
The Roots ft. Dice Raw, M.A.R.S, and Co-Op : Clones
One time for Malik B! This is a classic single from The Roots' "Illadelph Halflife" album, packed with quotables from all the MCs, and backed by a stripped-down but ferocious beat. The verses are separated by a chilled-out jazz sample, right before the drums, piano, and bars come crashing right back in. Greatness.
Exile ft. Co$$ : Pay The Co$$
I always rated the cutting up of the Malik B line from the final verse of "Clones" for the chorus here, and this is the perfect position to play it. Cashus King (AKA Co$$) is an MC out of Leimert Park in LA, and this track on the 2006 "Dirty Science" producer project looks like one of his first appearances, if not the very first. I'd have to imagine this isn't an easy beat to work with, as the Exile-produced rhythm lurches and twitches, with a somewhat cursory relationship with the beats in each bar. You've got to be good to make this work, on either side of the mixing desk!
Chuck D as Mistachuck ft. Jahi : freedBLACK
Chuck D was comparatively old as an MC when he first hit the scene, and showed how that was nothing but an advantage as he could take a different perspective to the late-teenagers on the mic elsewhere. That has continued throughout his career, where he brings his experience to bear on every verse - including here, on the "Celebration Of Ignorance" album. There's actually a piece at the start of the track I missed off as it wouldn't have mixed well, but that should be encouragement to buy the whole thing! C-Doc and ID cook up a beat rugged enough for the Hard Rhymer and Jahi, his compatriot in PE2.0.
Nine : Any Emcee
This gravel-voiced MC from The Bronx was first heard on Funkmaster Flex's "Six Million Ways To Die" as Nine Double M before tweaking his name, and eventually putting out a solid debut album of his own. "Nine Livez" is definitely worth a listen, if very much of its time, and this was the second single. Tony Stoute is on production - a forgotten name, who to be fair really did his work within the span of 1995. This is quality work though, putting some boom into a classic soul sample and then topping it off with the Rakim sample for the hook.
Brand Nubian : Allah U Akbar
Actually really proud of how much I nailed the mix into this one 😂 The call is very slightly off the nearest beat, but in the context of the production as a whole it totally works. This was a great track to open the second Brand Nubian album, "In God We Trust". Before it was released, a lot of people thought Brand Nu were done after the departure of Grand Puba Maxwell, but those doubts were swiftly dispelled. Sadat (formerly Derek) X and Lord Jamar were more than capable of carrying the load on the mic, and together with DJ Sincere, the production too.
[Kev Brown] MindsOne & Kev Brown : Nightstalkers (Instrumental)
Anyone who's been doing their homework should be able to recognise that Kev Brown bassline style! Great MPC work as usual out of Landover, Maryland from Brown's production on the collaborative "Pillars" LP.
Raekwon : Spot Rusherz
The monumental "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..." was released twenty-five years ago this month, and with it being one of my top two Hip-Hop LPs of all time, I couldn't let it pass without including a track. This one is buried late in the album, but would be the best song on any number of lesser releases! It's one of the few Raekwon-only tracks on the LP, and he goes into storytelling mode, with a highly-detailed account of a robbery of a rival dealer. RZA's beat is one of the many, many killers on that album, which might be his best end-to-end body of work ever.
The Roots : 100% Dundee
Needed a little more Malik B, so dipped into what is definitely my favourite Roots LP, "Things Fall Apart". Malik and Thought are locked in friendly mic competition on this cut, on one of the last tracks they'd work jointly on for some time. The beat is heavy on the low end with beatboxer Rahzel doing drums and bass at the same time, and sparkles at the high thanks to the added keyboard contributions of Scott Storch on an early appearance.
Phat Kat : Don't Nobody Care About Us
Detroit all day for this selection from "Carte Blanche". Phat Kat is rawness on the mic, which we were lucky enough to witness when he visited Manchester, and J Dilla backs him with a beat that bangs in a way that the original sample could never have dreamed of! DJ Dez rounds things out with the cuts on the outro.
Black Rob ft. Lil' Kim & G-Dep : Espacio
An anthem for our time, recorded twenty years ago for the "Life Story" album, the first from Black Rob. He was one of the more rugged personalities on Bad Boy Records at that time, which you can probably pick up from the rawness of his opening verse. Personally, Li'l Kim's verse is my favourite, and the beat by Joe Hooker and Mario Winans underscores her well. Also, possibly the only music video involving stunting on mopeds.
Marco Polo : RIP KALIBMA GOD
(sic) - I'm wondering if it should have been "kalimba", but I just work with the track title in front of me! The Toronto native working out of NYC gets much respect in the production world, and his selection for one of the Fat Beats "Baker's Dozen" projects, from which this is drawn, speaks volumes.
Sean Price ft. Cousin Reeks and Rustee Juxx : One Question
An ignorant classic for sure, and a mixtape cut that might have passed you by if you aren't a diehard Sean P fan. A standout on "Master P", where each MC takes a verse to talk smack and increase the crime rate over DJ Babu's production, playing off the vocal sample. Absolutely loaded with disrespectful quotables, at least one of which has to make you laugh!
Aaliyah : Hot Like Fire
It's nineteen years this month (already?) since Aaliyah passed away. This track so good, I was sure I'd played it before on the podcast - but no, so you get to enjoy it this month! This is from the "One In A Million" album, her second, where the combination of Timbaland's adventurous beats, Missy Elliott's writing, and Aaliyah's ability to work with both formed a winning combination. A slow burner with lots of bump.
Clipse ft. Pharrell : I'm Good
"Hell Hath No Fury" is still the best Clipse album in my opinion, but "Til The Casket Drops" was a solid release too. This was the lead single, and The Neptunes give the track a triumphant feel, appropriate for its summer release.
Massive Attack : Safe From Harm
An old classic from the very first Massive Attack album, "Blue Lines". Masterful sampling (no, I'm not revealing all the samples, just in case) by the crew to concoct a solid groove, and Shara Nelson with the iconic lead vocal. This was the perfect track to open their now-legendary debut with.
The Cool Kids : As We Breeze (Instrumental)
Nothing much to say here - just a dope beat from this Chicago duo, taken from the "Gone Fishing" instrumentals!
The X-Ecutioners ft. Halex The Armageddon : Poetry In Motion
A track very much of its era, when turntablism was picking up traction behind legendary crews like the X-Ecutioners and ISP, and spoken word was having a moment in the sun! The "X-Pressions" LP was not the end-to-end scratchfest that we might have expected, but a varied collection showcasing many different aspects of turntablism, production, and vocals from guest artists. The late great Roc Raida is on production, while poet Halex (who has many versions of her name on different credits) orates on the subject of Hip-Hop as a culture. Certainly no dancefloor track, but a podcast where you listen closely is just the place for it.
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
