Allow me to gush about this monster fucker find today:
I stumbled on this manga at Half Price Books today. Soulless by Gail Carriger.
Victorian era, vampire, werewolves, etc etc. Muy bien. The art is wonderful, too!
There's a novel version of this series, which I think came before the manga, so I might fall down that rabbit hole.
Anywho, here's the first volume's cover:
Of course, being a basic bitch, I really like the alpha werewolf guy. Sorry these screencaps are in French.
Unf.
However, the main lady character is a preternatural, which means supernatural beings revert to human in her presence.
BONUS, however. Alpha werewolf man is naked, while the main character is dressed, for a section of the comic.
OH and additional bonus: She's 26!
I'm fighting the urge to buy the rest of this series.
Also, Lord Akeldama? He's so cute and over-the-top, but still sensible. It's rare when a vampire steals my heart as much as a werewolf, but... here we are.
I think he's supposed to be explicitly gay - and thereby "not a threat" to the main love interest - buuut I wouldn't complain if he ended up being bi. (I just want polycules all around.)

Yearly Bible Read Through
Epistles
Week 1 Day 3
Acts 1:1-26 BSB
[1] In my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach, [2] until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen. [3] After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. [4] And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” [6] So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” [7] Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. [8] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” [9] After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. [10] They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. [11] “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” [12] Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away. [13] When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. [14] With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. [15] In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (a gathering of about a hundred and twenty) and said, [16] “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus. [17] He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.” [18] (Now with the reward for his wickedness Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong and burst open in the middle, and all his intestines spilled out. [19] This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) [20] “For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ‘May another take his position.’ [21] Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, [22] beginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.” [23] So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. [24] And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen [25] to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.” [26] Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

for the ficlet fest!!
- 9:30 (idk if you meant My Time or in the fic but either way. 9:30.)
- london pack house
biffy rabiffano
the time could be anything but i was happy to write this prompt. the only downside to getting parasol protectorate prompts is that i immediately want to go reread the whole series (its the opposite of a problem) anyway, thanks for following and I hope you enjoy!
want your own ficlet? check out the rules here
☂️☂️☂️☂️
london pack house, 9:30pm
After a particularly trying day running the hat shop, all Biffy wants is to get back to the pack house and sleep until the next full moon. He’s so tired, he doesn’t even have the twinge of resentment and regret he usually gets when he passes Lord Akeldama’s door.
Biffy’s fully intending to traipse up to his room and collapse on his bed, but a heavenly aroma wafting from the kitchen stops him at the foot of the stairs. He follows his nose and sighs when he sees Lyall alone at the counter.
“Rough day?” Lyall doesn’t even open his eyes as he asks, clearly using the counter to keep himself upright. Biffy would usually tell him to smarten up, but he himself is using the doorframe as a crutch, and he refuses to be that blatantly hypocritical. Plus he’s going to fall down soon.
“I passed ‘rough’ shortly after the fourth time someone saw fit to tell me that Chapeau de Poupe is literally going to the dogs. As if that notion were in any way original. Or true,” he pouts.
Lyall does meet his eyes at that. “You’ll prove them wrong soon enough.” He gestures with his cup to the counter. “There’s more in the pot if you’d like to join me. I’ve found it works wonders for my headache when Conall is particularly vexing.”
“I was planning on just going to sleep, but that sounds fantastic, actually.” He fixes his own cup and props himself next to Lyall, sipping in silence. He’s not spent a great deal of time with the beta one on one, and he’s pleasantly surprised to find out that he enjoys the sense of calm. The house is normally claustrophobic, overflowing with brash wolves and clavigers with no sense of decorum – no space for your own thoughts.
But here, in the dim light of the kitchen, alone with Lyall and an excellent cup of tea, Biffy can breathe.

Alexia Tarabotti is a spinster in her mid-twenties, mostly content to spend her time at home, in libraries, or with her friend Ivy who has unfortunate taste in hats. She’s also soulless, a preternatural whose touch can temporarily revert any supernatural persons to their formerly mortal state.
Alexia and the London werewolf Alpha, Conall, have chemistry built on mutual annoyance. He enjoys someone who will surprise and stand up to him (a limited commodity when one is the Alpha of a pack of werewolves), and she seems surprised when annoying him for fun turns into something more. Professor Lyall is his Beta, a competent and unassuming older werewolf who is a quiet, steady presence. Ivy, Alexia’s hat-obsessed friend, is one of my favorite characters but this isn’t yet the book where she shines. Lord Akeldama is a flamboyant and well-informed vampire who is utterly delightful.

*Dean chuckles and moves closer to Char*
"I move in my sleep so if you get kicked out of your spot that's on you"
*Buns turns to Ai*
"You're talking like you dated Alroy"
"She did"
*Buns looks legitimately stunned*
"Fucking Alroy Alarie?...what was it like???"
[*Char leans her head on his shoulder*]
I might kick you first, who knows.
[*Nash started laughing, causing Ai to smile.*]
Good fucking lord that was something.
It wasn't that bad. It was...character development.
Sounded like your canon event.
You're being way too nice.
Yeah, when half of my coworkers want me to get back with him, I feel like being polite is the most I can do.
Really?
Nash Akeldama Morningstar, son of Lord Lucifer, God of Pride and Despair, where have you been?
I DUNNO.
Rai is pissed and Suya and Aqui think I fucked up.
WHAT?? No you're not serious...
You guys talk like two high school girls.
Anyway, it was so— if I knew I was going to be in a long distance relationship, I probably wouldn't have agreed to date him. Gods, and waiting for him to propose? I still feel kinda stupid about the whole thing. Suspiciously, I do look 10x healthier now than I did then. Just saying.
And you gained some fuckin muscle.
Adrienne called me fat the other day, it was really eye opening.
Is that why you insulted her like that a few days back?
What did you even say?
"Think about what your mom looks like before you want to talk about me. Because after she pushed your fat head out, she didn't lose the weight, and now you're telling me to lose weight and that's very scary, because me and her, we're on the same boat." Something like that
OH
It's so embarrassing—
I would've moved to Cancun.
No I couldn't live after that.

THE BIBLE BOOK OF GOD
New Testament
Acts 1
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The Ascension
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms,
“‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’;
and
“‘Let another take his office.’
21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Question for Sysblr:
Anyone else have a lot of combination fictives? We have plenty of alters, including myself, that have 3+ sources. Where we could spawn a new fictive, it's like the character's archetype gets slowly meshed in with an existing alter's comparable personality.
For example: I likely began as a Jack Sparrow fictive, with Howl Pendragon and Magnus Bane (and elements of the entire Infernal Devices series) added in after. (Howl's hair and bird thing, Jack Sparrow's alcoholism and much of his personality as well as dubious luck and ability to weasel out of situations, the aesthetic of Infernal Devices.)
Jasper began as Jay Gatsby, but then had Saint's Row's Boss added, with elements of Boondock Saint's. (Prohibition mogul, Irish, disaster queer with addiction issues, with many of his plotlines resembling a 1920's Saint's Row. Jack even somewhat resembles Gat.)
Phisoxa began as V from V for Vendetta and lately has taken on traits from Alastor from Hazbin. (Different gender, time period, and country with a focus on revenge and earning freedom. Bitter, manipulative, but insanely powerful and eccentric.)
Aberle began as Lestat. (Personality, loves acting and singing in plays, different time period and appearance, polyamorous and queer as hell, even dating someone (Koji) that is similar to Armand.)
Kaspar began as Lord Akeldama---extremely similar appearance and lifestyle, but different country, gender, sexuality.
Many of the backstories and inworld incorporate certain elements of the source, but different names, time periods, and other variables.
It could come with the system having so many writers in it and wanting to OC-ify established characters, but I haven't seen too many other systems discuss it.

#DailyDevotion Scripture Fulfilled By Judas' Betrayal & Death
#DailyDevotion Scripture Fulfilled By Judas' Betrayal & Death Psalm 109 O God, Whom I praise, don't be silent. 2Wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me, spoken to me with lying tongues, 3surrounded me with hateful talk, and fought against me without a reason. 4In return for my love they accuse me, but I pray for them. 5They give me evil for good and hate for my love. While David certainly did have his detractors, especially Saul before David became king, I believe David is writing this Psalm prophetically, looking to the betrayal and trial of Jesus. So David, and therefore Jesus look to God the Father, who they praise to not be silent. They are having men oppose them wickedly. They accuse Jesus falsely with the intent to kill Him. Throughout Jesus' trial they brought false witness after false witness to get an executable crime in the Mosaic law. Jesus had prayed for them outside the city gates. He called them to repentance in love. They would not have it. They even lied to Pilate to try to get Him executed. While having an appearance of holiness, they were rotten to the core. 6Appoint a wicked man over him; let one stand at his right to accuse him. 7When he's tried, may he come away guilty;let his prayer become a sin. 8May his days be few, and another take over his office! 9May his children be orphans and his wife a widow! 10May his children wander around and beg and look for help far from their ruined homes! By inspiration, Peter tells us Judas fulfilled this prophecy in Acts 1, 16“Brothers, long ago the Holy Spirit spoke through David about Judas, who led the men that arrested Jesus. And what He wrote had to come true. 17Judas was one of us and was given a share in the work we're doing. 18With the money he got for his crime he bought a piece of land; and falling headfirst, he burst in the middle, and all his intestines poured out. 19Everyone living in Jerusalem heard about it. And so that piece of land is called Akeldama in their language; the word means 'Place of Blood'. 20It is written in the book of Psalms: ‘His home should be deserted, and no one should live there', and 'Someone else should take over his office'. Then someone should be added to our number as a witness of His resurrection.” We can only guess by this what happened to Judas' family. We can see from this why Judas did not repent in a godly way. The wicked man and the accuser of Judas is seen the word “accusar.” So Satan entered Judas according to Judas' own wicked heart. Then Satan accused Judas of the very thing he tempted Judas to do. He still operates this way today. This is something movies and tv shows often portray correctly. We are tempted to do something by the glamour of the act. Then Satan pounds on us for falling for the temptation. Our only hope is Jesus' cross and His message of forgiveness from the cross that can cleanse our conscience. 11May a creditor grab everything he has and strangers plunder what he produced by his work! 12May no one be kind to him anymore or pity his fatherless children! 13May his descendants be cut off and their name be wiped out in the next generation! 14May the LORD remember the guilt of his fathers and not wipe out his mother's sin; 15may they always be before the LORD! May He cut off the memory of them from the earth! I'm not sure whether this applies only to Judas or to all those who sought His life. It isn't a legacy you would generally want on your enemies. Yet this was the fate of those who rejected Jesus as their king and did not repent. It is not an absolute for we see Paul repented and inherited eternal life. Gracious God and Father grant repentance to those outside the Church who persecute Your people so they may escape the curse of rejecting Your Son. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Read the full article

Honestly, whoever thinks quips can't be done with soul never read any type of Fantasy (and classical literature, to be honest, but I won't get into this right now).
So many authors write those protagonists that are absolutely powered by quips, but on their own style, and it makes the books a delight. Ironically, since I'm rebloging this from her, Seanan McGuire has the ultimate shit-stirrer Toby Daye, who sounds very different from her love interest (even if he's equally as incapable of saying all that many serious sentences in a row), or from her sidekick (a rich teenager who grows so much during the series it's unreal), and from the tons of side characters (there are so many). It's beautiful. You laugh, you cry, and the quips don't make it less sincere, they make it more.
Gail Carriger? Steampunk quip machine. Alexa Tarabotti is a (semi) proper English spinster with the sharpest tongue you can find, and even if hardly anyone can match her (apart from vampire dandy Lord Akeldama, of course), people will surely try. Everyone sounds unique. There's verbal fencing through the roof. It's glorious.
Going older, now, and more well known. Can anyone imagine a Terry Pratchett novel without quips? It would be so boring! Even at his most serious and heartfelt: Monstrous Regiment is packed with jokes. So are Night Watch, Thud!, Snuff. No one has ever accused him of being one-note, his characters of falling flat. He's considered a genius.
And why should it be easier for book writers to do it? The media is different, but the challenges are the same. With more visual formats, you have shorthand, easier ways to differentiate people quickly, and so on. Hell, comic books do it all the time, with great success. It's not easier in print. People just seem to care more.
I need people to stop blaming the death of movies on “quips”. A quip is just a funny line of dialogue. That’s all. Like I just saw a post talking about quips and the death of movies and brought up Pirates of the Caribbean as an example of a better movie and yes it is but also that movie is FULL OF QUIPS. I just rewatched The Princess Bride. It’s all quips. Every single line. And it’s a masterpiece.
Movies suck when people don’t care about the art they’re making. That includes them not caring about their quips. Which is why a lot of comic relief dialogue ALSO sucks now. But the problem isn’t that funny dialogue exists.

Acts 1:1–26 NLT - 1 In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. 3 During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?" 7 He replied, "The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere--in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. 10 As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!" 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. 13 When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the Zealot), and Judas (son of James). 14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus. 15 During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them. 16 "Brothers," he said, "the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David. 17 Judas was one of us and shared in the ministry with us." 18 (Judas had bought a field with the money he received for his treachery. Falling headfirst there, his body split open, spilling out all his intestines. 19 The news of his death spread to all the people of Jerusalem, and they gave the place the Aramaic name [Akeldama,] which means "Field of Blood.") 20 Peter continued, "This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, 'Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.' It also says, 'Let someone else take his position.' 21 "So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus-- 22 from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus' resurrection." 23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they all prayed, "O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen 25 as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs." 26 Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.
Lord, you prayed in the garden for the will of the Father to be done. Even though you desired for the cup of affliction to be removed, you endured the cross, scorning its shame, so that I can have eternal life in you (Hebrews 12:2).
Help me to follow your example, and to pray the bold prayer, “Not my will, but yours be done.” May your good, pleasing, and perfect will be done in my life–now and forever. Amen.
