I like Lopis because she's one of the very few Halo characters who refused to stop viewing the Ferrets as the teenagers she met them as. The IIs get the most attention for their ages at conscription, but the IIIs were just as young and intended to be disposable, making them the arguably more morally-dubious SPARTAN generation.

When faced with the Spartan's ages, most people within the UNSC are doubtful, but more about their inexperience than the fact that they're using child soldiers, and once they prove themselves, they "respect" them as soldiers and let the age thing go.

Lopis is in a unique position because she is A) a civilian, so she doesn't have any loyalty to the military B) Gao, so she already doesn't trust the UNSC, and C) was held captive and tortured as a teenager, so she knows child abuse when she sees it.

So she meets the Gammas and is like oh hell no.

She knows that the "smoothers" are killing them. She knows that the Gammas have been indoctrinated and view themselves as soldiers and not the fifteen-year-olds they were when she met them. And she knows that ONI will use, scapegoat, and dispose of them if they become a problem. She can't free them, and they wouldn't go if she tried, but she can remind them that they're just kids, and that someone is worried about them coming back safe. She's willing to set aside her ingrained distrust of the UNSC to protect them in the only way she can.

As suspicious as I am when a woman character gets turned into the team mom, I think her desire to protect them and refusal to buy into the "necessary evil" of child soldiers is interesting and unique for the Halo universe.

i really want to start spinning for fine singles (aka spinning the same thickness i already do but not plying it) but it's such a balancing act (ha) especially when the yarn is so thin because if i undertwist it just falls apart instantly but if i overtwist it they just want to ply back on themselves anyway. bleh

“I need to make sure the kids are okay—” she pants, doing her best to shove aside the pain that spikes through her body as she tries, for the third time, to look over her shoulder.

Also for the third time, Fred sighs. “They’re fine,” he assures, threads of exasperation weaving in at the fringes of his voice. “I can see them. Will you just sit still?”

“Ash took a direct hit from the—”

“Veta.” Huge hands—hastily stripped of their armor and now stained crimson—clamp firmly, but gently, against either side of her face, keeping her anchored. “The kids are fine,” he repeats. Slower. Softer. “Trust me, they’ve been through a lot worse. You can check on them after I get this shrapnel out of you. Stop moving.” A slow second crawls by. She’s reminded—again—how much Fred’s eyes look like the ocean. “...please.”

Her instinct to nod is overridden by the heat radiating from his hands, still pressed tight right below her cheekbones. If this were anyone else, she’d feel threatened. Cornered. She doesn’t.

She breaks the settled silence a few moments after he’s finally released her and resumed his first-aid. “...you called me Veta.”

He doesn’t look up. “Trying to get your attention.”

She hums; a neutral non-answer. His hands had left echoes of warmth behind her jaw—smears of her own blood, too, but amidst the sting of injuries and biofoam, it’s doing her more good to focus on the former. “......you called them kids.”
