Another 5 months associated with traveling have passed, period for an update! Due to expert obligations at my office work, I had to postpone numerous longer trips to second half of 2017. However , We still managed to keep up with our frequency of traveling each week. Let’ s have a look at the current travel stats regarding 2017:
42 flights, 55221 miles, 2 . 2 close to earth, 135 hours up
Company Class with Emirates, Malaysia Airlines, Brussels, Austrian plus Lufthansa
fifty two hotel nights in fifteen countries (34 nights at IHG, twelve nights at Hilton)

On this occasion, I went Canyoneering close to Kawasan Falls plus snorkeling with whale sharks near Oslob. (see video clip below)

I also visited nearby isle Bohol which features The Dark chocolate Hills. They are covered within green grass that becomes brown (like chocolate) throughout the dry season, hence title. There are at least 1, 260 hills but there may be as much as 1, 776 hills distribute over an area of more than fifty square kilometers! Picture: Chocolate Hills at Bohol in the Philippines End of The month of january, I flew to S. africa using an Austrian Air carriers error fare from Sofia to Johannesburg via Vienna and Frankfurt. It was more of a distance run as I only remained 1 night in Johannesburg and the main purpose of the particular trip was to requalify for another two years of Star Alliance Gold standing via European Miles & Smiles. Episode 1: How I’m travelling 52 countries in 52 weeks
52 weeks and 52 countries, travelling around the world at random on the cheapest ticket every Tuesday? Some call it crazy. We call it ex-STA staff member and all-around solo backpacker extraordinaire Finding Alexx.
Ever hear of those crazy adventures that you’d LOVE to do but have no idea how? This is one of those adventures, and I’m going to show you all the ins and outs of how I’m making it happen.
I’m Alexx. A Kiwi, long-time STA Traveller, and now a full-time travel blogger at Finding Alexx, and I’m exploring the world solo for a whole 365 days! I’m visiting a new country every week for an entire year, and my route is based entirely on the cheapest flight available each Tuesday. Yes, I am crazy. Here’s all you need to know about my 52 in 52 adventure, and how you can follow the journey.
How’d you come up with the idea?
I’ve just been living in London for two years on a working holiday visa, working at STA Travel’s head office in the global marketing team, but unfortunately my visa expired mid-June (sob!). Not quite ready to make the 18,000km move back to my little corner of the world in New Zealand, I knew that I wanted to travel long-term, but had no idea where to go! I suffer from major analysis paralysis (it’s a thing, okay…) so having to decide where to spend my limited funds to visit was super tough – it just forced me into an endless downward spiral of Google research, going around and around in circles looking at travel costs, flight logistics, events that I wanted to see and trying to prioritise my wanderlist (Which is impossible, by the way!)
Then I thought, why not just book the route based on the cheapest flight available each week? That means I avoided decision-making anxiety, kept costs down, AND added in some places I wouldn’t have gone to otherwise. Win, win, win!
Won’t you just be going round in circles?
My route is to a new country each week, so once I’ve been to Paris for example I can’t fly into any other French airports. If France is the cheapest option from a future destination, I just skip past that and choose the next country that I haven’t been to on the trip.
Why are you doing it?
Aside from the fact that I think it’s a super cool way to explore some new places, I’m doing it to show how flexibility can massively keep costs down! If I had decided on a route that I needed to stick to with specific dates then that means I have no room for movement when I’m looking at flight costs, but by just checking out all the options and not having a set idea of where to do, I’m able to stick to a super tight flight budget.
I’m also obsessed with building out ultimate itineraries when I travel, like the absolute best things to see, do, eat and experience in each destination, and I love the challenge of finding the things that are totally worth spending your money on in 52 random destinations. Sometimes that might be an experience to splurge on, like a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, but sometimes it could be just a specific meal at a funky cafe, like the breakfast sharing plates at Holybelly in Paris. Divine! No one likes wasting money on their trip so I’m here to share some tips on what I reckon was worth the money (and what wasn’t!).
So, are you travelling on a budget?
Ab. So. Lutely. I do have some savings (around £12k total after accounting for all my flights) but you can run through that incredibly quickly while overseas. I’ll be doing a little bit of remote freelance work on the road which can help with free stays and day tours, but in each stop I’ll be sussing out the best ways to save money too.
How much will it cost in total?
It’s impossible to know, because I don’t even know the full itinerary yet! From some test itineraries it looks like the flights for the whole year will cost between £4,000-£4,500, but that includes a check-in bag (and would be about £1,500 cheaper with cabin luggage only, if you’re a packing wizard). Accommodation will range drastically depending on the location, but dorm rooms probably won’t be any more expensive than Paris, which was £35 a night. Some places, like Cambodia and Vietnam, will be more like £5 a night!
To keep costs down I’ll be cooking my own food as much as possible, taking public transport or walking instead of private transfers and taxis, and constantly searching for the best deals on activities and experiences.
How do you prepare for a trip like this?
To be totally honest, I’m probably not prepared enough! I like to say that I’m winging it with confidence. I’ve travelled a decent amount, have moved abroad solo and I really thrive in fast-paced and slightly stressful situations which is usually a curse, but in this case, it’s been really helpful. I have my inter-country transport booked up until January but only have a small amount of accommodation booked so far, this is something I’m working on at the moment. I’m a mega-nerd for organisation so this is one of my favourite parts!
In terms of preparation tools, I can definitely share some secrets. I’ve got a Google MyMap for every single recommendation that people have given me for each different destination, colour coordinated into eating places, photo spots, activities and accommodation. Airtable is also a lifesaver, it’s a spreadsheet/database hybrid with some amazing functions that are ideal for itinerary planning. Then I use Google Calendar to plan out my days and make sure I’m making the most of my time in each place, as well as setting aside some down time for recharging.
Are you travelling solo?
I sure am! I do have some friends and family coming out to see me at various parts of the trip, but for the majority of the time I will be literally flying solo. Always keen to have travel buddies though so if anyone is crossing over with my itinerary please let me know!
Any solo female travel tips?
Ask me in a year and I’ll probably be able to give you LOADS more, but I have previously written a blog with some of my solo female travel tips right here.
Will you be staying in the city that you fly into?
Not necessarily! In some places I will be staying put and exploring my arrival city in depth, but in some places I’m really keen to explore further afield.
Where is it taking you?
I’ve booked the first 26 weeks so far, so I know where I’m going to be until January 2020! Flight tickets are normally only released 11 months in advance so I can’t book all the way up ‘til the end (July 2020) just yet, but will be doing that in the next few months. I’m currently writing this from my hostel in Zaragoza on the second week of the trip!
So far, the itinerary is as follows:
Week 1: Paris, France
Week 2: Zaragoza/San Sebastian/Bilbao, Spain
Week 3: Brussels/Bruges/Ghent, Belgium
Week 4: Warsaw, Poland
Week 5: Vienna, Austria
Week 6: Milan/the Dolomites, Italy
Week 7: Budapest, Hungary
Week 8: Jordan (exploring the whole country on a tour)
Week 9: Cyprus (the whole island)
Week 10: Crete, Greece
Week 11: Sofia, Bulgaria
Week 12: Hamburg/Munich, Germany
Week 13: Porto, Portugal
Week 14: Zurich/Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland
Week 15: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Week 16: Dublin, Ireland
Week 17: Bucharest, Romania
Week 18: Israel (various stops)
Week 19: Turkey (various stops)
Week 20: Baku, Azerbaijan
Week 21: Dubai, UAE
Week 22: Delhi & the Golden Triangle, India
Week 23: Bangkok to southern Thailand
Week 24: Malaysia
Week 25: Singapore
Week 26: Bali, Indonesia
Week 27: A week off for a family wedding back home in NZ
Week 28-52: No idea just yet!
And where will the second half of the trip go?
It’ll go through Australia and the Pacific Islands, more of Asia, North and Central America, and back over to Europe. Unfortunately, flights to Africa and South America are never really the cheapest option so it probably won’t take me there. Oh well, they can be for another trip!
What are you most excited for?
It’s impossible to choose one but I do have a couple! Incredibly excited for Jordan and Israel because those are two places that I never dreamt I would visit, super keen to finally get to Budapest and Cyprus, and I LOVE Indonesia so I was stoked when that came up for my New Year’s Ever stop!
Anywhere you’re not looking forward to?
Not at all, I’m a firm believer that all countries have something amazing for you to discover no matter what you’re into. I’m also not visiting anywhere with a serious safety warning because of insurance and also my parents’ mental well-being, ha. You’re welcome, Mum!
Where are you going to stay?
I’ll stay in a mix of hostels, hotels and guesthouses, depending on the destination and living costs. In Europe it’ll mostly be hostel dorms to keep costs down, maybe a private room if I need a bit of a health kick and quiet time, but in Asia the guesthouses are super cheap and ultra-authentic which I love.
What about your environmental impact?
This is a really important topic for travellers right now, and something I’m definitely keeping in mind. First of all, I’m not actually flying every single week! I built the route off the cheapest destination to fly to but then checked each week’s journey on trains and buses too, and booked them if they worked out logistically. In the first six months I’ve got three trains and two buses in there.
Secondly, while a flight every week does have an impact, it’s important for me to share that these flights are short-haul, mostly on low cost carriers who have newer fleets with more environmentally-friendly engines, and that I’m offsetting every single flight throughout the year. I use myclimate.org to check my carbon footprint and the first 21 flights actually have a 25% smaller footprint than a single return flight from London to New Zealand!
We all need to be very aware of our impact on the planet when travelling, but I also think it’s about minimising your negative impact (offsetting carbon credits, watching plastic use etc) as well as maximising your positive impact (shopping local, opening your mind to new experiences and ways of life, and doing good wherever you travel). While carbon output is a necessary evil, I reckon we should all be using travel as a force for good.
Some other ways I’m trying to be more sustainable are:
Using eco-friendly shampoo, conditioner, body wash and laundry bars instead of travelling with those little plastic bottles. I use the ones from Ethique here.  I travel with Huel powder which is a nutritionally complete meal, you just add water and you’ve got a shake with all the vitamins and minerals you need! I have this for breakfast each day just to ensure my digestive system has some consistency while I’m travelling to places with totally different cuisines each week. Huel is vegan and sustainably-produced, it avoids food wastage (ideal for hostels!) and it’s super easy to take with you for an adventure day, meaning there’s no need to buy plastic-wrapped snacks.  Taking my Bobble filtered water bottle everywhere I go and never buying a plastic water bottle  Travelling with tour companies with strong sustainability policies, like G Adventures and Contiki
I’d love to know your tips on sustainable travel as well, tell me in the comments below!
How can we follow along?
I’ll be writing some STA Travel destination guides for a variety of cities and countries throughout the trip, which we will be linking to just below! If you’d like to check out all my travel photos you can find me on Instagram @findingalexx, or read more about my adventures at www.findingalexx.com

How you can grab a weekend abroad including flights AND accommodation from just £57 with this clever website
New Post has been published on https://britishdigitalmarketingnews.com/how-you-can-grab-a-weekend-abroad-including-flights-and-accommodation-from-just-57-with-this-clever-website/
How you can grab a weekend abroad including flights AND accommodation from just £57 with this clever website
Planning a holiday can be a stressful and costly experience, especially when trying to organise flights and accommodation separately.
But new website weekend.com is aiming to take away that stress and potential high costs by offering a service that matches the best prices on both direct flights and nearby hotels in locations all across Europe and beyond.
This is Money has trawled through the deals and found weekend breaks – including flights and accommodation – for as little as £57 per person.
The website, also available as an app, will appeal to those looking to take a weekend away in bargain fashion.
Malta is just one of the hundreds of destinations that weekend.com offer weekends away to for under £100
It aims to make the process of arranging a trip quick and easy, without having to use multiple websites to organise. The examples This is Money found also offer Atol protection.
Using it’s own, self-developed algorithm, it sifts through different providers multiple times a day, scanning for relevant flight and hotel offers.
The site was created by travel experts who check through all of the combined flight and hotel combinations that the database matches to ensure they are suitable, enjoyable destinations.
All deals include non-stop flights to the destination and each hotel has to have at least three stars. It also allows you to filter from most airports across Britain.
The shortest break available is two nights away but those who wish to take a longer trip can do so, going from Thursday to the Monday.
The website is ideal for couple or families looking for a short break away on the cheap to visit somewhere new, or friend trips, such as stag and hen parties.
The sooner you can book your trip, the better, as prices do rise the nearer to the departure time you get.
This is Money investigated and hunted five of the cheapest deals currently available on the site for within the next six months.
1. Bydgoszcz for £57 per person
The cheapest weekend away currently available on the site appears to be to Bydgoszcz, a city in Northern Poland – the eighth largest in the country.
For just £57 per person you can get two nights away, from Friday to Sunday, to the Polish city and a three-star hotel. The cheapest flights appear to be from London Luton.
Bydgoszcz is the eighth largest city in Poland and two nights away only comes to £57
The unique buildings alongside the river are some of the most recognisable in Poland
An architecturally rich city, Bydgoszcz has earned itself the name ‘Little Berlin’.
The famous granaries alongside the Brda river and on Mill Island are one of the most recognisable landmarks in Poland.
Other top tourist sites to visit include the Bydgoszcz Cathedral, the Bydgoszcz canal and the ‘Man Crossing the River’ sculpture.
The Fara Church is the oldest building in the city, erected between the 15th and 16th century, and is also home to a 16th century painting, Madonna with a Rose.
2. Algarve for £63 per person
The next cheapest destination is to the sunny Algarve in Portugal. A Friday to Sunday stay in the KR Hotel: Albufeira Lounge comes to only £63 per person.
The three-star hotel is less than a kilometre from the beach and just three kilometres to the nearest golf course. It is also one of the top rated hotels on review site trustyou.com.
The Algarve is a popular tourist destination with 7.1m tourists estimated to visit in 2017
Weekend.com can fly you to Faro, the biggest city in the Algarve, for just £63 per person
The cheapest place to fly from was London Stansted in our research.
The Algarve is one of the most developed areas in Portugal, known for its wonderful coastal views.
It is also one of the richest regions in the EU and is considered to be the biggest and most important Portuguese tourist region, having received an estimated total of 7.1million tourists in 2017.
Top tourist attractions include the many water parks available, a walk along the Via Algarviana as well as taking a visit to Silves, a town located inland, that is set in a scenic location with a historical background.
Of course the numerous beaches that line the coast of this scenic area are one of the main reasons that tourists flock to this part of the world every year.
3. Malta for £64 per person
The third cheapest break we could find is to Malta at just £64 per person. For a two night stay, from Friday to Monday, it is possible to stay in the Carlton hotel, another top rated hotel on trustyou.com.
A Southern European island country, Malta consists of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the world’s smallest but most densely populated countries.
The cheapest airport appears to be Birmingham from our research.
It is a popular tourist destination because of its warm climate and architectural and historial monuments, including three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, the city of Valletta and the Megalithic Temples of Malta.
Malta has a large tourist industry due to it’s hot climate as well as it’s world heritage sites
Malta has three World Heritage Sites as well as being famed for its diving and coastal views
The seven temples are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world.
Malta has many more points of interest, including the Manoel theatre, museum and courtyard which is known to be an architectural treat.
Deep sea diving is also very popular in the country due to it’s clear blue seas, stunning sea life and underwater wrecks that can be explored up close.
4. Poznan for £65 per person
A 2 night stay in Poznan, a city in Western Poland, can set you back as little as £65 per person.
The Friday to Sunday break takes you to a three star hotel, located in the heart of the city, that has been voted as excellent by trustyou.com.
Poznan is well known for its Renaissance-style buildings, with the Old Market Square proving to be a top attraction for those visiting.
Our research shows the cheapest airport to fly from appears to be London Stansted.
Poznan is home to the third largest university in Poland, making it a popular city for students
The main square in Poznan is one of the main tourist attractions in the country’s city
The city served as the country’s capital in the 10th century with the museum of history and the cathedral still serving as points of interest.
The area is also an important academic site, hosting roughly 130,000 students and is home to the Adam Mickiewicz University – the third largest in Poland.
Poznan is prided on it’s very high standard of living, ranking highly in both safety and healthcare quality, with the lowest level of unemployment in the whole country.
5. Warsaw for £66 per person
Poland’s capital city, Warsaw, is available for booking from £66 per person, for a  Friday to Sunday trip. The cheapest airport in our research to go from is Liverpool.
Staying in a three star hotel, guests will be able to take in all the historical sights of the largest city in the country including remnants of the former Warsaw Ghetto which are still visible.
Memorials and museums also pay testament to the city’s troubled past.
The city has been ranked as one of the most liveable. It is also known as being a great centre for business and a significant centre of research and development.
The Old Town of Warsaw is home to medieval building that were reconstructed after WWII
Warsaw, the largest city in Poland, is known for its history and can be visited for just £66.00
The picturesque Old Town of Warsaw is one of the main attractions when visiting and like its name suggests, it is the oldest part of the historic city.
Many of the buildings in the square where reconstructed after the damage inflicted in World War II.
A lesser known fact is that Warsaw was rebuilt according to an 18th century painting by Bernardo Bellotto, an 18th century, Italian urban landscape painter.
However, if you are a classical music fan, the Fryderyk Chopin Museum is for you.
The famous composer’s grand piano is on display, as well as manuscripts of Chopin’s letters and musical compositions.
What else is available under £100?
Having a quick look on the website, there are dozens of other destinations available from a variety of airports across Britain for less than £100 – which also includes three-star accommodation.
These include Katowice, Sofia, Gdansk, Marbella, La Rochelle, Limoges, Vilnius, Dinard, Kaunas, Toulouse, Nantes, Côte d’Azur, Belfast, Costa Blanca, Majorca, Riga, Tallinn, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Budapest, Edinburgh, Valenica, Prague, Jersey – and many more.

The first thing I did when I booked a VERY last minute ski holiday to Borovets under the influence of FAR too much vino, was to google ‘ Beginner skiing in Bulgaria – is it easy?! ‘ ‘Like, REALLY easy? Like, ANYONE can do it easy?!’ Needless to say, I was feeling the fear! Being possibly the clumsiest person on the planet, I felt my fear was probably justified! I mean my first injury at Borovets was just walking into the corner of the bed! This somehow resulted in an 8-inch haematoma which looked more like I’d collided with a tree at high speed..!
A few panic attacks later (yes real ones) and a lot of falling over, they finally made a skier out of me. Well, sort of… (Hurtling down the slope in a Bridget Jones manner counts as being a “skier” right?!) So I decided to write this Borovets ski resort review from the perspective of a beginner skier. I shall tell you how to get there, where to stay, what to eat and drink as well as where to get skis and what ski school is like in Bulgaria. And guess what?! It turns out beginner skiing in Bulgaria is pretty fun…

So read on for my Borovets ski resort review to find out why you should consider beginner skiing in Bulgaria!
So why choose Borovets ski resort, Bulgaria for your holiday?
The main reason people flock to Bulgaria for ski holidays is the affordable prices. Yes, it would be lovely to ski in the picture perfect French Alps and yes I’ve heard the Austrian apres ski is second to none.  But those resorts come with a hefty price tag that is difficult to justify except for the most avid of skiers. If you are a beginner skier, you will no doubt want to keep the costs down until you know that you love skiing!
Borovets has a few other attractions too. Firstly it’s only a 90-minute transfer from Sofia! This means less time in the car and more on the slopes!
In the two most popular Bulgarian ski resorts Bansko and Borovets, there are plenty of green beginner slopes for you to learn on.
Bulgaria is full of geothermal hot springs! I can think of no better way to tend to sore achy muscles post skiing than sitting in a natural hot spring overlooking the snow-capped mountains!
What is Borovets ski resort like?
Set in a cute alpine village surrounded by plenty of snowy mountains, Borovets is certainly picturesque. I loved the little triangular wooden huts seen all over town. Everything is close and easy to walk to – even in uncomfortable ski boots! There are horse and carts shuttling skiers back and forth to their hotels. (Though I’d be reluctant to use this service as these horses didn’t appear particularly well cared for.)
There is certainly no shortage of bars pubs and restaurants so the apres ski is lively especially late afternoon when the slopes close for a few hours.  You can happily stay out until 4 am or so if you want to!
When to go to Bulgaria skiing?
Borovets isn’t the highest ski resort in Europe with a maximum altitude of 2560M. Therefore, it may be risky going at the very start or end of the season. That said we went the first week of March and there was plenty of snow. A few slopes were getting a bit patchy but there were more than enough snowy slopes to keep us all occupied including the more advanced skiers in my group! I’d say anytime between December and February should guarantee you a reasonable amount of snow.
How to get to Borovets?
We flew from London Stanstead to Sofia. Sofia is just 1-1.5 hours drive from Borovets and transfers are pretty cheap from about 10 euro each person each way if organised in advance. Some hotels will arrange transfers for you so it’s worth checking this at the time of your booking.
Prosecco time at the airport!
How much does a skiing holiday in Bulgaria cost?
This really depends on how and when you book it! You will comfortably be able to afford an apartment or chalet for 4 people for around €500. However, there are better bargains to be found. Some friends we met out there had found flights AND accommodation for a week with half board for €250!
[bctt tweet=”Some friends we met out there had found flights AND accommodation for a week with half board for €250!” username=”@globetrottergp”]
Food and drink can be expensive on the slopes. Expect to pay up to 30 lev (€15) for a hot meal and a beer. However, this is substantially cheaper than in the Alps where you could easily spend double! Back in the village, prices are a lot cheaper. Mulled wine will set you back about 3-6 lev, a meal 15-20 lev. Beers and cocktails are often sold as 2-4-1 deals so can work out very cheap. Good for the bank balance. Not so good for the mega hangovers!
You will usually save at least 25-30% of the cost of ski passes and equipment hire in Bulgaria compared to more expensive resorts in France and Austria.  Ski school is also extremely cheap!

We stayed at the Chamkoria Chalets. Booking so last minute and after a heavy snowfall, we didn’t have many options available to us! However, Chamkoria chalets were great. Our apartment was spotless, well equipped and had a lovely open fire which was extremely cosy! We also had use of a pool, sauna and jacuzzi in the building which was much appreciated after a cold day on the slopes with achy muscles!
The main downside to Chamkoria Chalets was the location. Approximately 3 miles from Borovets, we had to rely on shuttle buses and taxis. Shuttle buses had to be prior arranged and stopped at 7 pm so we often had to pay for taxis. Due to the narrow icy road to get there from town, many taxis were reluctant to do the trip and the ones that did charge a premium. It cost us 30 lev for each journey. The remote location, however, was very picturesque and peaceful.
– The Lion Hotel
Our friends we met on the slopes were staying at The Lion Hotel just half a mile from Borovets centre. They were pretty happy with their hotel. The only criticism is that they weren’t able to provide much information on local tours and activities. However, they got a bargain price and taxis were only 10 lev. Plus there was a shuttle bus that ran frequently and didn’t need to be pre-booked.
– Hotel Rila
Hotel Rila is definitely the luxury option. This grand hotel is literally right on the main slopes and the outdoor terrace overlooking all the action looked like an amazing place to hang out. I only saw the lobby when I went in to inquire about local activities but it felt extremely grand and the spa which you can see from the slopes just looked amazing! I thought it would be really expensive to stay here but a quick check on booking.com and it’s only €90 per night between 2 people! A bargain really…!

What should I wear in Borovets?
Given that the altitude isn’t too high in Borovets, you may feel warm on the slopes if you wear too many layers! I’d recommend for most days you will need a thermal base layer and leggings under a ski jacket and salopettes. You may need an additional layer or two on colder days! Also invest in goggles, sunglasses, a buff or face warmer and some good waterproof gloves. In the evening, the dress code is casual. Jeans or leggings with a jumper and snow boots would be perfect! I talk more about what to wear and what to pack in my Packing for beginner skiers post!

What is the nightlife like in Borovets?
Whether you are looking for a smart bar, a casual pub, a family-owned restaurant or a no-frills karaoke bar, Borovets has you covered! My favourite restaurant was Mamacita’s Mexican and my favourite apres ski bar was BJ’s for friendly service and great atmosphere. (Borovets has a habit of naming all of its bars crude names..!) I will be writing an article about Borovets nightlife so keep your eyes peeled!
Where do I hire equipment and get lift passes at Borovets?
We used Traventuria one of the main ski hire places in Borovets. After researching prices for ski hire in the French Alps, I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable rates for hire, lifts passes and ski school.
We were late for our fitting / first ski school due to a blockage on the only road to our hotel – a minibus had got stranded in the snow sideways! But this didn’t seem to matter and we were handed all of our equipment when we arrived with minimal hassle. The equipment was decent quality, the centre close to the gondola and there were lockers available at additional cost of €5/day. This came in very useful for days where we went straight out from the slopes!
The organisation on occasion was a little poor. Our first instructor seemed to think he was teaching advanced skiers until we informed him otherwise – already halfway to the slopes! The following day, somehow my name wasn’t on the list for lessons and lessons had begun 45 minutes ago anyway as we’d been told the wrong time! But they did ring around and manage to slot me into another lesson albeit with slightly more experienced skiers.
A 6-day ski pass with equipment hire and 3 days of ski school (from 9 am to 2 pm) will set you back a very reasonable €252. A 4 days ski pass with equipment hire only costs €164. Compare this to Tignes in France where a ski pass alone (with no equipment hire or lessons) will cost €285 for 6 days or €198 for 4 days!
Aside from your skis, boots and poles, you will need some additional equipment but not as much as you would think! Check out my skiing for beginners packing list here!
What is Ski school like in Borovets?
I had 3 days of lessons. Each involved a 2-hour session in the morning, lunch on the slopes (not included) then a 2-hour session in the afternoon. My groups were always between 3-4 people but I have been told at busy times can be up to around 15 people. As a nervous skier, I was glad for the closer supervision!
I had 3 different teachers. The last 2 were fabulous and really helped with my confidence. Though I was disappointed with my first ski instructor who acted like he didn’t really want to be there and didn’t teach us much. So whilst it can be hit and miss depending on which instructor you get allocated, in general, the standard of teaching was very good. Keep your eyes peeled for my article on beginners skiing coming out soon. You will hear about my Bridget Jones moment on the slopes…!
What are the slopes like for beginners at Borovets?
In Borovets, there are plenty of beginner slopes. There are 2 main nursery slopes and another longer cross country green slopes then plenty of blue slopes to practise on. Though I’d suggest not attempting the cross country slope until you gain a little confidence as it crosses a red run and you really don’t want to end up on that by accident!
There is also plenty to do for more advanced skiers. There are plenty of challenging reds plus a few black runs.
Top Tips:
1/ Always check the ski run is open when you get on the ski lift! Friends of mine who were complete beginners had to ski down a blue run when the green was closed. It sounded like a stressful experience!
2/ Always check what time the last gondola back down leaves at. My friend and I narrowly missed the last gondola on our first day when I still couldn’t even stand on skis without falling over. Skiing down a red run to get back would not have been fun!
What else is there to do in Borovets when I’m not skiing?
Be assured, there is plenty to do for non-skiers. You can visit natural hot springs, take ski-doo ski mobile safaris, horse treks and take time to chill out in a spa. There is also the apres ski where I spent most of my time..!
One final thing to remember!
Do NOT forget to arrange travel insurance! Especially as skiing carries a little more risk than a stroll in the park! As well as covering holiday cancellations, theft etc, make sure there is good health cover including emergency evacuation if needed. It’s also important to double check your insurance policy covers you for extreme sports – skiing! Check out Nomads travel insurance below – a company I reckon you can rely on! (psssst their travel health clinics are super helpful if you are planning a trip somewhere exotic and need advice on malaria, immunisations or altitude sickness!)
I hope you have found this Borovets Ski resort review useful and that I have persuaded you that beginner skiing in Bulgaria can be brilliant – even for the non-talented skiers like me! Bulgaria is a great option for beginner skiing if you are looking for somewhere affordable and not intimidating for beginners. There is a fab apres ski and plenty to do in the local area and I would definitely recommend Borovets as a great place for beginner skiing in Bulgaria and a great alternative to the pricier ski resorts in the French and Austrian Alps.

Hi, just found this subreddit as I’m looking for some help figuring out a trip I have to take in June. I’ll be attending my friend’s wedding in Bulgaria on June 3rd, so I plan on making it an extended vacation with my girlfriend; leaving June 1st and flying back on June 9th or 10th.
I’ve found that direct flights to Sofia, Bulgaria are quite expensive, so we had the idea of flying into a cheaper location in Europe, and then catching another flight in to Sofia. This way, we can also use that intermediate city as the location for the extended vacation portion of the trip, after the wedding. We will be flying out of the California Bay area, so we have SFO, Oakland, and San Jose that we can potentially leave out of. Looking for insight into a cheap city to land at in Europe (that would also be a location that would be good for vacationing for about a week) that we can also find a cheap flight from there into Sofia.
The basic timeline I’m thinkin of is: Depart SFO June 1st->Arrive European city June 1st/2nd-> Depart European city June 1st/2nd->Arrive Sofia June 1st/2nd->WEDDING->Depart Sofia June 5th->Arrive (same previous) European city June 5th->VACATION->Depart European city June 9th/10th-> Arrive SFO June 9th/10th.
I’ve seen flights into Brussels seem pretty decently priced, but if possible we’d love to be a little further south where it’s warmer, and near the water!
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it’s obviously getting close to the day!!

As jewels are women’s always love, so are watches in the men’s world. Over the accomplished several centuries, watches had not been artlessly acclimated for alive the time anymore. Actually, with the development of technology and the alteration of customers’ requirements, watches accept developed into a affectionate of amazing artwork. Of course, works accept to be apparent in the appropriate abode and by the appropriate being so that the absolute acceptation abaft the watches can be absolutely demonstrated.
The a lot of important watch appearance this year should be the Basel Watch Appearance that was captivated on Basel. In the show, we can see the latest and the best watches that appear from all over the world. For example, Calibre de Cartier, Piaget, Breguet, and anew built-in member- Swarovski and so on.
The watches on appearance are all the newest works of anniversary brand, and they are apparent by models and admirable stars who are arrive there.
One of the a lot of anxious works is declared to be Calibre de Cartier not alone because it’s multifunctional but aswell because of its absolutely new design. It is the aboriginal watch that is fabricated through the technology that enables it to alternation by itself. And the abraded adornment and baroque apparent are a absolute match.

Links of London are a renowned supplier of both men’s and women’s jewellery. Established back in 1990, Links of London came about as a result of a simple request for a pair of fish cufflinks. The request came from a restaurant owner who wanted to charm and reward his loyal customers with a signature pair of sterling silver cufflinks.
Harvey Nichols saw the design and instantly fell in love with it, they ordered a whole collection of cuff links to be made exclusively for their London fashion store. So Links of London was born, and nowadays the brand is recognised globally and can be found in stores across the UK, Hong Kong, USA and Canada.
Links of London , as previously stated, offer an eclectic mix of both men’s and women’s jewellery, comprising of ranges made of 18 carat gold and of course sterling silver. They are well known for their range of men’s cufflinks of course, but also their charm bracelets that appeal to the female clientele. The charm bracelet gives the woman and huge choice of different charms made form different materials and in different colours for her to create a bespoke bracelet to suit any occasion, be it a cocktail party or a relaxed get together with friends. She will be able to create the perfect accessory to her outfit for the night. Cufflinks and of course the charm bracelet are perfect gifts for Christmas, birthdays and, of course, Valentines’ Day too.
What makes Links of London stand out from the crowd? Well, they endeavour to offer something exciting, different and new at all times, to stay on or ahead of the trends. They believe that design and function are the cornerstones of great jewellery no matter the material. The Links range includes contemporary classics, the latest fashions and of course the extra special “diamond in the rough”, if you like, that piece of jewellery that effortlessly delivers.
An example of one of these pieces is the 18ct gold sweetie bracelet. Links of London simply took the childhood candy bracelet and created an iconic piece of jewellery . Since its launch in 2002 the Links of London sweetie bracelet has been a ‘must have’ in the collection of any girl. Its design is slinky, versatile and a great alternative to a traditional charm bracelet. If you want to add any of the Links of London charms to it, you can choose from over one hundred charms. You can also blend in gold charms on the silver sweetie bracelet.
Links of London offer engraving services to help you reach out to a loved one and create an enduring reminder of your feelings. The core values of the Links brand is one of design and function but also British eccentricity and humour and this is reflected in the items available today.
Links of London have always endeavoured to create bespoke and personalised items, in fact that is how they started out, and a simple request for cuff links has led to a hugely successful jewellery brand recognised across the globe.
We sell a range of jewellery, including Links of London and other brands. Please visit our website at http://www.steffans.co.uk

The Bank of International Settlements has an important role to play in the recommendation and issuance of Basel III. It is an organization with international presence and it encourages achievement of financial stability by continually urging central banks to cooperate by implementing regulations passed by the organization such as the Basel 3 Summary. The organization works only with international firms and various central banks. It gives a platform where policies can be analyzed and discussed by central banks and various financial agencies to finally come up with rules that boosts financial stability of all. The primary goal is to perform economic as well as monetary research. It is also a supporting agency and a trustee for many financial dealings and operations occurring between the central banks. It was established on May 17th, 1930.
Basel Committee is a committee formed by the Bank of International Settlements for recommending suitable laws and updating them with changing financial markets. The Bank of International Settlements proclaimed in September 2010, the updates to the Basel rules to be that will affect the capital adequacy. The updates are also called “Basel III updates”. Basel III updates involve the capital conversion buffer met with common equity and minimum common equity requirement, which contributes to the total common equity requirement. By the release of Basel II, the common equity requirement was at 2%. With the arrival of Basel III updates the value has gone up to 4.5%. It just stole away the biggest and one of the most valuable loss balancer by increasing its value by more than twice its current value.
The Tier 1 capital requirement, that envelopes various qualifying financial resources, growing on stringent criteria, and common equity, will increase to 6% from its current value of 4% during the same time. Basel 3 Summary has also brought with it the date from which implementation is supposed to be started by various member nations. The date happens to be 1st January 2013. Member countries have to convert the Basel III updates into national financial regulations before this date. Basel 3 Summary also affects the Risk weighted assets or RWAs and the date of implementation is the same. The first clause is 3.5% common equity for every RWA. The next one is to have 4.5% Tier 1 capital for every RWA, amounting to the total of 8% capital for every RWA.
Basel III also brings forth the minimum required common equity that to be followed from 1st January 2013 till 1st January 2015. The change in the minimum common equity requirement from 2 to 3.5% is effective from 1st January 2013. The Tier 1 capital requirements have also risen to 4.5% from 4%, which is a minor change. The banks need to target and reach 4% minimum common equity plus 5.5% of Tier 1 capital till 1st January 2014.
Basel 3 Summary has made 1st January 2015 into an important date because by that time the banks will have common equity raised to 4.5% and the Tier 1 requirements raised to 6%. The vast difference evident among the total capital requirement (8.0%) and the Tier 1 requirement will be met via Tier 2 or other better versions. Basel 3 Summary will entail regulatory adjustments that will involve deferred tax assets, deductions as well as prudential filters for amounts greater than 15% limit over investments made on financial institutions.
As a consumer what are the change of Basel III that will impact you. Learn about the various regulations of Basel 3 Summary by clicking on the links.
