UGH I know I need to quit harping on Bi-Han's characterization in MK1. Because there is some stuff that's very, very good. It's frustrating as hell, but very realistic human behavior. People are inconsistent and fickle and project shit and act out at the worst moments. In that respect he's quite well written.

He's also not wrong to feel disgruntled about how the Lin Kuei take a backseat to Liu Kang's "champions". I've been to that place professionally, where I was never considered good enough for the top position at work, yet was constantly expected to train the people who were. It's a lingering disrespect that breaks a person down.

Again, some organic and realistic development and explanation for Bi-Han's choices down the line.

But... there is also some really contrived storytelling when it comes to him. At least as much of his behavior is on the nose, and leading. Several of his intro lines show him to be discriminatory toward Baraka and Syzoth. And it just feels like the whole point of that is to drive home that he's a bad guy.

Same with the reveal about his father's death. Like? Was that really peak confession time, my man? Telling Kuai Liang he was a fool was plenty, it was in context. But being like, "PS: I let Pops die" is so forced. I mean, I know it's important info but it was just served so tactlessly.

If you have to sell it that hard, maybe there's something wrong with the arc you have in mind for a particular character.

Or maybe I'm just salty that one of the sexiest men in the whole game is about to be turned into a Monster Energy can cosplay. (No offense if you're excited about Noob, personally, I'm not) I'd be all in for a hot revenant, though, like MKX gave us with Kuai Liang before he was restored.

Season 8 Elizabeth Keen: Strangers by Ethel Cain

I can’t express to you guys how long I’ve been wanting to make an edit of her to this song. I’ve delayed it for so long because to be honest.. I really really hate her character in season 8 and I knew rewatching the episodes was going to be painful but hey, I finally did it!

There are a couple of things I got from her final character arc and one of them is her perverted sense of justice in attempting to kill Red. She is so blinded by her quest she literally drives herself insane to the point of hallucination (Kate Kaplan). I think it’s interesting that she has to manifest one of Red’s greatest enemies to try and convince herself that what she’s doing is correct, hence. “I try to be good. Am I no good?”

Her own psyche has trouble in trying to justify torturing and killing Red and that speaks a lot to the weakness of her own goals (BECAUSE SHE KNOWS SHE SHOULDN’T BETRAY THE MAN SHE LOVES MOST)

Almost every other scene she’s distraught/ fighting her own subconscious on whether she should cross the line or not, and I think this song really encapsulates that internal battles she constantly has during her fight against Red. And of course, her death scene being her desperately trying to make amends but dying almost by her own hand, is definitely not a fun viewing experience 😃.
