Ramadan 2024 Fasting Hours: Longest & Shortest Worldwide
Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam, is a time of spiritual reflection and devotion observed by Muslims worldwide. During this sacred period, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset. However, the length of these fasting hours varies greatly across the globe due to the Earth’s tilt and the sun’s position. Understanding the Variations in Fasting Hours: As the Earth orbits the…

2024.07 ~ Top 5 longest fics posted on AO3
1. Echoes of the Past by atsaturnday [M, 100k]
►In a post-war wizarding world, Harry Potter, now a struggling Auror, is thrust into a new assignment investigating peculiar incidents linked to the enigmatic Whispering Vault. Reluctantly joining forces with Draco Malfoy, a respected potions master with knowledge of dark magic and arcane artifacts, Harry delves into a world of hidden truths and perilous mysteries. As they unravel the mysteries, their connection grows stronger, filled with stolen glances, lingering touches, and unspoken emotions. It becomes evident to those around them, and even to themselves, that what started as a reluctant partnership has transformed into a love that defies old prejudices and expectations.
2. Letting You In by @emeraldmarvel [M, 97k]
►Ten years after the war, Harry is working in his small Quidditch Supplies and Broom Repair shop, suddenly surprised at how fast the years have gone by. Struggling with the fact that people are still only interested in him for being Harry Potter, he settles into a quiet and comfortable life in his home and a job he loves. However, one day, a little boy who looks like he could be a miniature version of Malfoy, walks into his shop with Pansy Parkinson. Harry is immediately captivated by the little boy who seems to know all about him, and couldn’t have foreseen or imagined the way his life would change when that little boy returns asking him for help.
3. Aevumiter by MarshmalowMilkshake [M, 95k]
►Waking up at 12 Grimmauld Place wouldn't have been something concerning except for a few things. 1. Harry had fallen asleep in the Eighth years' dormitory. 2. He wasn't even in the right bedroom at Grimmauld Place. 3. Sirius Black was standing right in front of him, looking very much alive.
4. Silver Spoon by PrinceMalice [E, 67k]
►Six hours after Tom Riddle’s body had been discovered, the heads of the Families had all convened, waiting for his usurper to make themselves known—to begin a new series of negotiations. Alliances. No one ever stepped forward. No agent of the Ministry claimed the credit. Nobody had seen or heard a thing. He may as well have been struck down by a ghost. Six months later, rumors started circulating that Riddle’s murderer had already been admitted to Azkaban. No matter what strings Draco’s father or others like him had pulled, no one was able to dig up anything more than that. Someone had gone through great lengths to cover the whole thing up. Draco Malfoy takes a fall for his family and is sent to Azkaban. His only hope of getting out is to find and kill the man who murdered the kingpin of the reigning Families, Tom Riddle. He is in for many rude awakenings.
5. before a fall by @eleadore [E, 64k]
►[...] Something is wrong with Draco Malfoy. Harry is nothing if not a creature of habit.

No. 2 - Aostrolf's Weed (NSFW/18+)
“Is this okay?” she took the care to ask him, almost sweetly. Something a little self-conscious and worried in the look she gave him. “This is still okay?”
Maker. It’s better than okay. It’s a wanting more edged and hot than he has ever known, a pleasure so deep he might lose himself in it. It’s too good; it isn’t right at all. He knows that no matter what promises he has made, he is going to be imagining her like this for the rest of his life: beautiful thighs spread on either side of his hips, flush of arousal across her chest, pert breasts, his cock in her hand—ready, he can only assume, to ride him raw because he did not fuck her hard and fast enough the first time, as she had been asking him to.
He is tongue-tied, too thick with need to answer with words. But his hands found her hips and guided her downwards, both of their groans echoing off the walls of the Necropolis as she sank around him, taking him fully inside of her in one slow, steady, deliberate press.
The pleasure is staggeringly total: his toes curl; his back arches off the floor; his hips drive up to meet hers. His eyes rolled back as his eyelids squeezed shut, his jaw slack, mouth open wide to let loose a groan that is nothing short of obscene, loud enough to echo through the vast hall of the Necropolis without.
And that’s just the feel of her—but the sight of her, look! The tension in her thighs and her core as she lifts herself only to seat herself fully around him again; the messy curls of dark hair spilling over her shoulders and around her face and the curled patch of dark hair between her legs; the bounce of her breasts with each of her thrusts. Strange, how it still feels a move too bold to touch her—but she has no reservations about touching him. When Agnes caught him staring, she smiled, bit her lip, did not quite bite back her moan of satisfaction; lifted her free hand to hold his face, her fingers brushing his cheek so reverently, so gently—far more gently than the force with which she rode him. When her thumb swiped low along the curve of his chin, Emmrich opened his mouth and captured it, gently but firmly, between his teeth.

I’m really proud of all the writing I did this year! So for the last ten days of 2024 I’m going to be reblogging my 10 favorite pieces that I wrote.
I think this is the longest single smut one-off I've ever written?? It got so out of hand??? It inspired a whole spin-off series I had 0 intention of writing???? And compared to other pieces it was so easy to write— a real joy.
The fic owes a lot to two other sex pollen fics I'd HIGHLY recommend—firstly, a Solas x Trevelyan one, which is mind-numbingly good and (I think??) can still only be found on the Kink Meme/LJ. It's so good I spent over an hour and $22 trying to find it in all those comments again just to rec it here, and it was worth every minute and penny. I was for sure heavily influenced by the absolute crash from erotic to devastating at the end. Not gonna put the author on blast since it was filled anonymously but if they are seeing this: this is one of MULTIPLE of your works I still think about years later and I hope you are thriving. And SECONDLY, oh my god, @bdafic's Solavellan sexpollen fic, Aphrodisia. YES IT'S UNFINISHED, I DON'T CARE, GO READ IT ANYWAY. I am sometimes literally just doing things around my house like, walking my dog, or washing my dishes, and the reveal in this fic hits me over the head AGAIN and I have a little chuckle at Solas' expense thinking of him hiding his embarrassed, red face in his hands… and then I just stare into space like, wow. wow. Incredible. 13/10. I won't spoil it for you, but it's so hot, and so funny. Multiple outloud belly laughs reading it. Incredible Dorian and Varric banter at the top. And @bdafic's Ellana is one of my fave quizzies. I never would have put all that work into Aostrolf Van Markham if I hadn't been inspired by the absolutely insane world building this fic spoils the reader with. START YOUR 2025 OUT RIGHT! RUN DON'T WALK!!

Day 8: Friday 27th September, 2024 [Wellington]
Breakfast: Coffee & an ANZAC buscuit Lunch: Steak pie Dinner: Conference welcome hungi meat & veg
We were up early again this morning to check out of our accommodation and do a Napier art deco walking tour that Jane was keen on at 10am. We arrived with enough time to get a coffee first and then visited the Art Deco Trust to meet our tour guide, Robin, who was a real cutie. The staff at the trust were all dressed in Art Deco-era clothing and the gift shop was adorable. I feel that Gran would have loved it. Hearing people speak so fondly of their town, history and heritage is always charming, which all staff did.
The tour started with a 20 minute film about the history of the town. A 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Hawke’s Bay area in February 1931 and absolutely dessimated the town. What wasn’t damaged by the earthquake was destroyed by the fires that were started by the earthquake’s damage to the town’s power. The whole town was a shambles and fires couldn’t be put out do to the shoreline retreating and damaged water mains. The navy had to be called in to help control the fires which lasted for two days. The navy, army and locals then all worked together to rebuild the town in a shockingly fast 2 years. A temporary town ‘Tim Town’ was erected to help businesses continue to run while the town was being rebuilt and this was the creation of the first shopping mall in the country. Due to the whole town being built at the same time, all buildings and architectural choices were made in the same style of Art Deco, giving the town its unique presentation. The town held a celebratory parade in 1933 to commemorate the opening and it still runs annually to this day.
Robin took us for a tour of the architecture in town and whilst he did waffle on a bit, there were some really interesting snippets of information about the original shop fronts, the businesses that were established there and the impact of the town’s reputation on tourism. We took lots of photos and ended up back at the Trust at 11.45am. We were a bit pressed for time so we got a cute photo in dress-up costumes and then got in the car to start our trek to Wellington.
I was driving, yet again, and wanted to visit the Longest Name Place in the World (Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki-maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu) but when we popped it into Maps, we realised it was going to be too much of a detour and we needed to be in Wellington before 5pm to drop off the car and make it to the conference welcome. We decided to just drive straight to Wellington. I drove for 2 hours and we drove through a wind farm which was very majestic with the giant wind turbines. We wanted to pull over and take pictures, but there were no viewing spots and we didn’t want to get stuck behind the fuel truck that was behind us as we drove up the mountain.  Once over the mountain, we stopped in Ashhurst for a quick lunch at a country bakery. Amara offered to drive for the last leg, which was nice, so I sat in the front passenger seat and listened to my audiobook while taking photos of the glorious views.
We arrived in Wellington at 4.30pm, filled up the car with petrol and got to our next accommodation. Amara had found a 2 bedroom apartment 4 minutes from where the conference was being held, but it was at the top of a very steep hill on Mount Victoria and was a steep decline to get into the city centre. The streets in our suburb looked like San Fransisco. We unpacked the car and I went by myself to drop it back to Apex Rentals. I had a bit of trouble finding the location, but once I did I checked the car (Tim had left his sunnies and headphones in the back seat) and gave the keys to the staff member who didn’t even check that the car was OK. Ah well, not my problem. I then booked a $9 NZD Uber back to our apartment as I couldn’t be bothered to brave the hill on foot.  When I got ‘home’ Amara and Tim said Jane had gone for a walk and would meet us at the conference welcome. I changed into something ‘smart casual’ and then we booked an Uber to the gallery location.
It was lovely to see fellow Committee members Danni, Nina, Laurie & Kel at the welcome and also my Drama teachers (and Drama Ed royalty) from Uni Meg & Jo. There were also some other Melbourne Drama teachers from Haileybury, Ruyton & Melbourne Uni. The NZ hosts were very welcoming and we started the evening with a Maori blessing (Karakia) and a welcome (Mihi Whakatau) where the NZ delegates sang a welcome song. Our Drama Australia President, Jo, also did a welcome on behalf of Drama Aus and did a fantastic job pronouncing the names of the Indigenous lands that Australian delegates were from (I live on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong country).
My school paid for my ticket to the conference welcome, which was $80 NZD a head, and dinner was one course and a piece of bread. We had to buy our own drinks. I think this was a bit steep. Tim bought a bottle of wine for him, Amara and I to share. We ate dinner then listened to the opening Keynote by a New Zealand poet and academic named Selena Tusitala Marsh. She spoke to us about the power of creativity and using that to look after your mental health and struggles. She has just published a book about ‘untying your knots’ for children and read us the book and asked us to reflect on the ‘knots’ in our lives and how we work to untangle them.
After the welcome closed, the Drama Vic crew headed to a lovely jazz bar called The Library, which Laurie had been to the night before. We all ordered a cocktail and tried to chat at our table, but the live jazz band was a bit loud. After one drink, we all decided to head home. Tim, Amara, Jane and I said farewell, then stopped at a convenience store to pick up some brekky supplies before heading back to the apartment to play an Italian card game called Scopa that Tim taught us. Amara and I went to bed just before midnight while Tim and Jane stayed up. Our apartment is tiny and after half an hour of loud talking, I had to ask them to keep it down. I then put in headphones and listened to music on my phone to drown them out. I did not sleep well.
The first day of the actual conference is tomorrow! I am exhausted, but excited to see how they do things here in NZ!

2024 Le Mans 24 Hours: Fred and Mick Prepare For Race Debut
The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team Reserve Drivers are gearing themselves up to take on one of the world's most famous motor races for the first time. Fred Vesti and Mick Schumacher will be swapping single-seaters for endurance machines this weekend, getting stuck into the challenges of the Le Mans 24 Hours. Fred will drive for Cool Racing, with whom he competed in the European Le Mans (ELMS) series with, while Mick will race for Alpine as part of his World Endurance Championship (WEC) commitments with the French outfit. Both drivers are raring to go. "It's my first 24 hour race ever," said Fred. "I'm really looking forward to driving at night. As a racing driver that is such a cool experience, with so much adrenaline. Any driver would enjoy that. It requires a different mindset to a sprint race in F2 or an F1 race. The longest race I've ever done is a four-hour race in LMP2. There are a lot of things that need to go right to be a successful race." Mick added: "I'm very excited to have that first experience of Le Mans. We're pretty set for it and ready to get going. This project has been what we've been focusing on. Hopefully it's successful." Mick will be racing car No. 36 in the hypercar category, and Fred will get behind the wheel of car No. 37 in the LMP2 class.
Having both cut their motorsport teeth in single-seater cars until this point, this season has seen Fred and Mick learn to adapt to new machinery. "It's a completely different experience than driving an F1 car. The car is more of a GT car in the way it feels to drive," said Mick. "It has different challenges, but what's nice is you know it's been made with Le Mans in mind." For six ft tall Fred, the closed cockpit has also provided a new challenge to get used to. "It's a different experience, and I still bang my head on the roof sometimes," he said. "It's a tight space and that will not be nice for 24 hours! The key when I get out of the car will be to rest and release the back. It's a fun, fast car to drive; not as quick as an F2 car, as it's a little heavier. It's similar to F2 in terms of engineering and downforce." The important reserve driver work Fred and Mick have carried out so far this season may not have seen them gain time behind the wheel of W15, but both have used their time in the garage to grow and develop off the track. "Mercedes has helped me in so many different ways," said Mick. "The experience I've gained from being part of the team has helped me become a better racing driver. I'm so grateful for the time we've spent together." Fred added: "Working with Mercedes in F1 has given me a lot of insight into car set-up and engineering. It also prepares you for working as a part of a big team and approaching things as professionally as possible. It makes you a more well-rounded driver. If you can be adaptable and drive in different conditions with different cars, then that is a really good strength to have. All these things challenge you as a driver."

Andy Robison- Mental Health On Tour
Andy Robison is a freelance front-of-house sound engineer and production manager.
Robinson has worked with big names like Beabadoobee, and Ashnikko but has mixed for every sort of artist and bands. For the past twelve years, Andy has been working in the realm of live music, for the past nine years he’s been touring all around the world but worked at his local O2 arena when attending the University of Leicester. Robinson was lucky enough to meet award winning band Wolf Alice just before their success and started touring with them for a year. Andy has stated that touring with Wolf Alice allowed him to put his foot in the door of the industry which led to him getting more work in the future.
Andy is very open about every part of his job and doesn’t shy away from the more realistic topics. He says “The best part about my job is I get to travel the world” he speaks about the people and friends he has met whilst doping so and speaks about all the existing adventures they all have, on the flip side of this he speaks about how the job is very fun but does come with some drawbacks like long hours, the unsocial hours, spend a good chunk of time is in forms of transportation, his longest day on the job was 27 hours, this included flying to LA setting up doing the show packing down and the travelling back to his accommodation for the night. Andy shared that at the beginning of his career, he loved the travelling side to his work, visiting all these new countries however as time goes by he has since found that the travelling side can at times be a tedious task and can absolutely have effects on his relationships, and family dynamics sacrificing not being around for big family events.
When speaking about how being on the road can really affect your mental health Andy caught my attention. He said ‘There are many things that contribute to the effects of your mental health on tour, some of these might be the food that you’re eating’ ‘Sometimes tours are catered for and that's amazing, but often I find myself eating junk food and a lot of Deliveroo food’
This is something that I would keep in mind because a big part of my life is diet and physical activity, I will try and eat as many whole foods as I can and try to stay away from fast food and junk chemical foods.
Another aspect of mental health Andy speaks about is the stress and pressure of the job. “Personally, I like the pressure and stress” he feels that when in these situations he can often pull off some of the best shows that he has worked on. This is the complete opposite of me, when stressed and under pressure, I tend to shut down and lose my train of thought, so I applaud Andy to have the capability to achieve such results in stressful situations.
A report from Music Ally written by Stuart Dredge shares the comparison in musicians with mental health problems pre-Covid and post-Covid.
‘The comparison with pre-Covid numbers show a 396% increase in mental health consultations and a 357% rise in numbers of patients' (Dredge, 2024)
Stuart Dredge also wrote another article, this one focusing on a charity called ‘Music, Minds, Matter.’ this article is dedicated to helping the organisation set up a stand-alone charity that focuses on ‘mental health and the twin pressures of touring and social media.’
Whilst Andy isn’t the most active on social media he is always on the job, whether it’s a stand-alone show or a run of shows Andy is always on the job and charity could be a massive help in terms of his al health when on the road.
“Creation of the new charity will mean all fundraising income generated for mental health by the charity is solely dedicated to improving mental health,”
Since opening the charity, the call lines to ‘Help Musicians’ have risen by 30% in the last year.  (Dredge, 2024)
I think that the call stats have risen due to the company being so public about the fact that the mental health portion of the company is now a separate company. The publicity of this change has opened up the eyes of people who are struggling with mental health issues.
If I could sum up meeting Andy and hearing his talk, I would say I came away from it with more interest towards the behind the scenes side of touring, his honesty was very insightful and has made me consider getting into his side of the industry.

Ramadan 2024: Fasting Hours And Iftar Times Around The World
The Dawn-To-Dusk Fast Lasts Anywhere From 12 to 17 Hours, Depending on Where in the World You Are.
— By AJLabs | 7 March 2024 | Al-Jazeera
Tumblr media
Following the sighting of the crescent by the moon-sighting committee, Saudi Arabia has announced that the first day of fasting will be Monday, March 11.
The dawn-to-dusk fast lasts anywhere from 12 to 17 hours, depending on which part of the world you are in.
Muslims believe that Ramadan is the month when the first verses of the holy book Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad more than 1,400 years ago.
The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual relations during daylight hours to achieve greater “taqwa”, or consciousness of God.
Why Does Ramadan Start On Different Dates Every Year?
Ramadan begins 10 to 12 days earlier each year. This is because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar Hijri calendar with months that are 29 or 30 days long.
Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year by 11 days, Ramadan will be observed twice in the year 2030 – first beginning on January 5 and then starting on December 26.
The next time Ramadan will start after March 12 will be 33 years from now – in the year 2057.
Tumblr media
Fasting Hours Around The World
The number of daylight hours varies across the world.
Muslims living in the world’s southernmost countries, such as Chile or New Zealand, will fast for about 12 hours, while those living in northernmost countries, such as Iceland or Greenland, will have 17-plus hours fasts.
For Muslims living in the Northern Hemisphere, the number of fasting hours will be a bit shorter this year and will continue to decrease until 2031, which is the year Ramadan will encompass the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year. After that, fasting hours will increase until the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.
For fasting Muslims living south of the equator, the opposite will happen.
In extreme northernmost cities, such as Longyearbyen in Norway, where the sun does not set from April 20 to August 22, religious rulings have been issued to follow timings in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, or the nearest Muslim country.
Tumblr media
Cities That Share The Same Iftar Times
The predawn meal to start the daily fast is called suhoor, while the breaking of one’s fast after sunset is called iftar.
Cities situated roughly along the same longitude will have similar iftar times, while those on the opposite side of the globe will be preparing to start their fast with suhoor.
The infographic below shows which cities are having suhoor while others are having their iftar.
Fasting Times Around The World
The table below shows the suhoor and iftar times on the first and last days of Ramadan 2024. Use the arrows or search box to find your city.

Boeing 747 at 50: Everything you need to know about the Jumbo jet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fifty years ago the Boeing 747 took to the skies for the first time, with the promise of transforming aviation. The Jumbo jet offered greater luxury than ever before for first-class passengers, and more seats than ever before in economy class. And while younger planes have come and gone, the 747 flies on.
How transformational was the 747?
The Jumbo jet is no longer the biggest passenger plane, but half a century ago it startled the world by its sheer size: two-and-a-half times bigger in terms of capacity than previous aircraft.

Joe Sutter and his team of 4,500 designed and built the 747 to be a freighter as well as a passenger plane. That, he said, was responsible for the wide-bodied cabin and the upper deck which gave the plane its distinctive hump.
The “bubble” also allowed airlines to create the feel of a private club for premium passengers.
The main effect on the airline industry, though, was that it more than doubled the number of available seats. Air travel was democratised: from 1970, when the 747 entered service, fares started falling and horizons were broadened.
Isn’t it a bit long in the tooth?
This is an aircraft that was designed in the 1960s. All of those flown by British Airways were assembled in the 1990s; Virgin Atlantic’s fleet is very slightly younger, with the newest delivered in 2001.
Yet the 747 is rather like a reliable old car: the purchase price was paid off years ago, it’s popular with passengers (especially BA’s premium customers) and so long as the price of fuel doesn’t rise too high it’s an efficient way for Virgin Atlantic to get 455 people to and from Florida and the Caribbean.
The carbon footprint is much heavier per passengers than more modern aircraft: the Airbus A380 “SuperJumbo” is bigger, quieter and more fuel efficient. But the 747 has outsold it by six to one. The first double-decker Airbuses are now being broken up for parts, making the A380 look more like an endangered species these days.
How big is it?
Length: 232 feet (71 metres). Wingspan: 211 feet (64 metres). Height 69 feet (19.4 metres).
If you prefer your measures in Routemaster double-deckers, that’s eight buses long, seven buses wide and four-and-a-half buses tall.
How is the 747 powered?
Four engines (sometimes, if a spare is being flown under one of the wings, five). British Airways’ fleet is fitted with Rolls Royce RB211-524H engines.
How fast?
The maximum airspeed is 614mph (988km/h). Over the ground, the speed can be significantly higher with a tailwind. But the typical cruising speed is 565mph (910km/h). A 747-400 typically takes off at 180mph (290km/h) and lands at 160mph (260km/h).
How far?
The stated range of BA’s Jumbo fleet is 8,357 miles (13,450km), which is more than enough for the longest British Airways route, from London to Santiago in Chile.
The longest regularly scheduled route was from Sydney to Dallas-Fort Worth, with Qantas. The distance is 8,578 miles (13,802km) – although the inbound flight, typically hampered by headwinds, had to land in Brisbane to refuel, as that was half-an-hour shorter.
When did UK airlines start flying the plane?
Jumbo jets were first flown by BOAC (long-haul predecessor to British Airways) on 14 April 1971, a year after the first planes were delivered; an industrial dispute between the airline and its pilots meant that the 747s sat on the ground.
Virgin Atlantic started operations in June 1984 using a secondhand 747 to fly between Gatwick and New York Newark.
How many passengers?
That depends on the airline’s chosen configuration. The high-density 747s deployed on Japanese domestic routes carried up to 550. Virgin Atlantic has 455 seats on its Jumbo jets. But British Airways has no more than 345 seats on its 747s, and on some of the planes only 275; these are known as “Super High-J”, code because of the large number of Club World seats.
During its lifetime, the world’s 747 fleet has flown 3.5 billion people – the equivalent of half of the world’s population.
How do I get to fly on one?
Heathrow is the heartland of the 747, with far more of them serving the airport than any other. It’s the base for British Airways, which has 34 of them and intends to still be flying the Jumbo in five years’ time. By February 2024, the youngest will be a quarter of a century old.
All BA’s 747s are based at Heathrow, and fly to the US destinations of Boston, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco, as well as Cape Town, Dubai and Lagos.
Virgin Atlantic uses the 747 mainly for flying to Orlando in Florida, from Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. Registrations for its fleet include G-VAST and G-VBIG.
To fly on the latest version of the Jumbo, the 747-8, Frankfurt is a good place to start; Lufthansa is one of the few airlines to operate the jet.
It’s three weeks to the 50th anniversary of the first Concorde flight. Why has the Jumbo endured so much longer?
It represents a very good business proposition for connecting the world – yes, at less than half as fast as Concorde, but far more efficiently. While the British and the French went for speed and style, the Americans were focused on something much more functional.
In the words of Juan Trippe, the boss of Pan Am – the first airline to fly the Jumbo, from New York to London, jet travel allowed travellers to “roam the four corners of the world, meeting in friendship and understanding the people of other nations and races”.

What about the accident record?
The 747 has been involved in many tragedies. The world’s worst aviation accident, on 27 March 1977, took place at Tenerife North Airport when a KLM Jumbo began to take off in fog and struck a Pan Am 747, with the loss of 583 lives.
The worst single-aircraft accident in history also involved a 747, on a domestic flight in Japan. On 12 August 1985, 520 passengers and crew lost their lives when a badly repaired rear bulkhead failed and caused an explosive decompression.
A Soviet fighter jet shot down a Korean Air 747 on 1 September 1983 when it strayed into USSR air space on a flight from Anchorage to Seoul. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed
On 21 December 1988, Pan Am 103 was destroyed on the Heathrow-JFK route; 259 passengers and crew died when the Jumbo was blown up by a terrorist bomb, while another 11 perished on the ground in the Scottish town of Lockerbie.
Best use of an old 747?
The Jumbo Stay hostel at Arlanda airport in Stockholm. A night in a dorm bed costs SEK450 (£38).

House Passes Bill to Raise Minimum Wage to $15, a Victory for Liberals
The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour — about $15,000 a year for someone working 40 hours a week, or about $10,000 less than the federal poverty level for a family of four, and has not been raised since 2009. According to a Congressional Budget Office study, raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2025 will pull 1.3 million American out of poverty and could result in wage increases for up to 27 million workers. But it would leave 1.3 million people, or 0.8 percent of the work force, out of a job, the same study concluded. Should the federal government gradually increase the minimum to $15 an hour by 2025: (1) Yes, (2) No? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
The House voted Thursday to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2025, delivering a long-sought victory to liberals and putting the Democratic Party’s official imprimatur on the so-called Fight for $15, which many Democratic presidential candidates have embraced.
The bill would more than double the federal minimum wage, which is $7.25 an hour — about $15,000 a year for someone working 40 hours a week, or about $10,000 less than the federal poverty level for a family of four. It has not been raised since 2009, the longest time the country has gone without a minimum-wage increase since it was established 1938.
The measure, which passed largely along party lines, 231-199, after Republicans branded it a jobs-killer, faces a blockade in the Senate, where Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, said he will not take it up. Only three Republicans voted for it, while six Democrats opposed it. Most represent swing districts.
But it previews what Democrats would do if they capture the Senate and the White House in 2020, and it demonstrates how fast the politics have shifted since 2012, when fast-food workers began to strike in cities around the country, demanding $15-an-hour wages and a union.
When the Fight for $15 movement was launched, the figure seemed absurdly high, and even Democrats thought it was politically impossible. In the years since, even Republican states like Arkansas and Missouri have raised minimum wages, encouraging Democrats on Capitol Hill. In 2016, Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, pushed the issue to the fore when he challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“This is an historic day,” declared Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who argued that raising the minimum would disproportionately help women, who make up more than half of minimum wage workers, and would particularly help women of color. Turning to Republicans, she said: “No one can live with dignity on a $7.25-per-hour minimum wage. Can you?”
As the measure passed, the House gallery, filled with restaurant workers, erupted into cheers and chants of “We work! We sweat! We want 15 on our check!”
“It’s got overwhelming support within the Democratic Caucus, and I think the fact that it could pass in Arkansas gives pause to anybody that’s thinking about voting against it,” said Representative Robert C. Scott, Democrat of Virginia and the measure’s chief sponsor.
Still, Democratic moderates — especially those who represent districts carried by President Trump — were nervous about the measure, and it took champions of the bill months to bring them around. In the end, the sponsors tacked on two provisions: one authorizing a study of the measure’s effects after it has been in place for two years, and another extending the deadline for a $15 minimum wage from 2024 to 2025.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the liberal Democrat from New York and a strong ally of the Fight for $15 movement, called the vote a “huge deal.” But she signaled the fight is not over.
“It’s not just about $15, it’s about $15 and a union,” she said. “Fifteen started 10 years ago, so what is that pegged to inflation today? That’s why what we fight for is a living wage. So I think that this vote is an important milestone.”
The federal government sets the floor for the minimum wage; states can enact higher minimums. Raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2025 will pull 1.3 million American out of poverty and could result in wage increases for up to 27 million workers, according to a recent Congressional Budget Office analysis.
But it would leave 1.3 million people, or 0.8 percent of the work force, out of a job, the same study concluded. While the legislation would boost incomes at the bottom, it would cost richer households and would slightly reduce gross domestic product.
Republicans focused on the C.B.O.’s job loss figure, as well as regional disparities in the cost of living. They invoked their favorite epithet for the Democrats of the new House — “socialist” — in arguing against the measure.
“Let’s leave freedom in the hands of the people, in the hands of the states — that’s what this country is all about,” said Representative Virginia Foxx, Republican of North Carolina, who managed the bill for Republicans on the House floor. “In socialist regimes, all decision are made by a small group of people at a central government. That is not the American way.”
Economists have increasingly accepted that some level of minimum wage increase can work — coming at a minimal cost to jobs — in some jurisdictions, said David Neumark, an economist at the University of California at Irvine who has studied minimum wages extensively. But a one-size-fits-all policy that more than doubles some businesses’ wage bills could hit employers in lower-pay areas hard, he said.
“It has had what I would say was a remarkable and unexpected political success,” Mr. Neumark said of the $15 minimum. “Does it make sense? Call me skeptical.”
But some advocates of a higher minimum wage want to push pay up even farther. Among them is Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the union-funded Economic Policy Institute, who said even $15 will not be adequate if workers have to wait until 2021, when a Democrat could again occupy the White House.
“The Fight for $15 was launched in 2012, and every year that passes, the purchasing power of $15 goes down,” she said.
Ms. Pelosi had promised a vote on the wage bill soon after Democrats took power in January, but party leaders soon found that was going to be impossible; too many moderates were uneasy with it. Along with Representative Robert C. Scott, Democrat of Virginia and the bill’s chief sponsor, Ms. Pelosi deputized Representative Stephanie Murphy, who represents a swing district in Florida, to build support for the bill.
“We’re unifying behind the idea that we need to help hardworking families make ends meet,” said Ms. Murphy, whose district includes many workers employed at Disney World, which recently agreed to raise its minimum wage to $15 by 2021.
To fast-food workers like Terrence Wise, 40, who lives in Kansas City, Mo., and makes $12 an hour working full-time at McDonald’s, the vote shows the power of grass-roots activism.
“We’re a powerful voting bloc,” said Mr. Wise, a longtime leader of the Fight for $15 movement, “and we will take that power to the ballot box.”
The push for a $15 minimum wage began in New York City, when a group called New York Communities for Change started visiting fast-food restaurants and talking to workers about their grievances.
“Fast food workers always believed that there would be a national shift to $15,” said Mary Kay Henry, head of Service Employees International Union, which has helped provide institutional support to Fight for $15 from the outset. She recalled marching alongside them in 2012 and thinking that the goal was ambitious — because Democrats were talking about $9 and $10.10 minimums at the time. “I remember thinking, ‘Holy moly. How long is this going to take us?’”
Seven states have now passed legislation to gradually raise wages to $15, and cities including San Francisco and New York City already pay that much. In total, 29 states now have floors higher than the federal minimum, according to the Labor Department.
Companies have even joined in, with corporations including Amazon and Target raising their base wages to $15. By the 2016 midterm elections, $15 was resonating at a national level, making it into the Democratic Party platform. Support for striking workers has become common among Democratic presidential hopefuls including South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey.
“The successes in the municipalities and states are key,” said Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office who has advised Republican presidential candidates and is now president of the American Action Forum. “All of that laid down the predicate that people wanted this.”
But Mr. Holtz-Eakin said raising the national minimum wage would be a mistake, in part because labor conditions vary dramatically around the country. He said it is unlikely that the minimum wage will pass at $15 by 2025, even if a Democrat wins the White House in 2020.
“Politically, it’s a popular one, there’s no question,” he said. “I think it gets bargained down in the process.”
