I love writing. The first thing I do when I get up is write, the last thing I do before I go to sleep is write. Between reading horror/fantasy/speculative fiction books, I read books on craft by anyone and everyone. My passions in life are the craft of writing AND storytelling.

Note: those are two different things. Having a story to tell and craft (the way we tell that story).

I am not saying that people who use AI to tell a story don't have a story to tell. They do! But that doesn't make them writers.

We have folktales across every culture about not accepting ourselves for who we are and that way leading to madness. Your version might go a little something like this:

A person who feels different than everyone else wishes to whoever is listening that they wake up beautiful/smart/charming. In the morning they wake to a mirror at the foot of their bed. Their reflection is all of those things! Filled with confidence, they go out into the world but, before meeting anyone, they catch sight of themself in a window. Their reflection normal but (having seen themself in the mirror) they now perceive themself as hideous.

They rush back home to check. In the mirror they're beautiful! What a relief. They stare deeply into the glass. Slowly their hair grows tangled and their clothing ragged. Days and weeks and months pass. They can't do anything without watching themself do it in the mirror. Dishes are done at the sink with the mirror blocking the window they used to love looking at the garden through. They wake with the mirror in bed with them rather than their lover. Etc, etc.

Using generative AI is like that mirror. Surface level, it makes things pretty. It may be entertaining and it may convey the story you want to convey.

But it's not your voice. It's your story, but not your voice. And it will trick you into thinking there is something wrong with your voice, that the way you tell stories is hideous, that you are incapable of the craft of writing. It will lie to you and you will live your whole life feeling disconnected from your own stories because something else is telling them for you.

That's why I'm against AI. Because I love writing. I love the way people tell stories, imperfect or perfect, because it's people telling them. Writers grow and change. Their punctuation choice, their word choice, their choice of form matter to a written story. There is connection in those decisions. A deeper level to a story that AI can never touch, only a person can.

So, please. Give your own voice a chance to grow and be heard.

Very funny that tumblr is having discourse about whether my art is misinformation or not, after I've been posting it all over the internet for years without any controversy. So let's talk about it!

I know people arguing are a vocal minority, but I'm not going to dismiss anyone's concerns. It's an actually interesting topic that I really consider, and it touches some important issues in society. So here's my (rambly) two cents.

My art is meant to misdirect, in some way. Photomanipulation and the tone I typically use are meant to briefly confuse the person reading it into thinking they're hearing a real story, at least for a few seconds.

The Intended Experience™

In this sense, I feel like my art can be misinformation! And it's not only people who don't think critically about things like "how come I never heard about mermaids being real before?".

So, no disrespect to anyone that fell for one of my pieces! My work plays with reality, so if you fell for it for more than a minute, it just means my tone and style worked a little too well for you! And there are legitimate reasons to be confused when you see something online, too. For example, there are people who can have trouble telling real and fictional things apart. When you post something that goes out to a million people, you'll get one million different reactions.

That's why I always take care to make it really clear, outside the main piece and snippet of text, that my art is no more than fiction. There are tags, the tone of my account, even my profile picture is meant to reinforce this. I also have a website which, in part, is meant to capture the clicks of people to wonder if my stuff is real and google it, so they can find a real source that's clearly an art website. You can try googling "mycelium infection 1806" or "pupillosarcoma" to see how my website tends to appear first.

If I get this comment I know I've done something believable!

But let's say, for the sake of argument, that my art wholly constitutes misinformation. What we need to understand is that misinformation is not the same as disinformation. Misinformation is just incorrect information. It's your grandma seeing a little bit of a found footage movie on TV and thinking it really happened. She might be spooked, but nobody is harmed. Disinformation is false information that's purposefully crafted and spread in order to cause harm, division, or further a political view.

Now I ask you: what real world harm does my art create? The worst that can happen is that a tiny percentage of those that see it get a little scared thinking a weird bug is real, or that mushrooms really grow on faces, or that scientists have released millions of trilobites into the oceans. Is that really that bad?

Anyway, that's my take on the topic! I'm obviously biased, but this being my style, I do put a lot of thought into it and I'm always open to people's opinions! (Just don't scream at random people on the replies or you'll get blocked!)

something else I really like about She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat is its display of gaining weight as a part of healing.

I mentioned in that other post that one of the main characters, Kasuga, was seriously discouraged from eating by her family growing up. We're shown images from her childhood as well as an image from when she finally was able to move out

Her unhappy and unaccepted childhood self is then contrasted with her modern day self in a small side by side as she talks about how much better her life is now.

The topic of weight itself is never brought up specifically, but the look into her appearance of her past vs now alongside the assurance that she is both happier and living better in general these days gets the message across anyway

As someone who was born with several health issues and has chronic pain (to the point I've fractured limbs and not realized it for a week or so till it sunk in that it wasn't getting better because it wasn't as bad as my base level pain to start), I can understand the mom's position. I recall wanting to end it all at 10 because I was made to fill like a burden due to my healthcare cost. I went into healthcare because of that knowledge. I worked in retail and hospital pharmacies for 15 years until my accident. There are days I still struggle with this feeling. I have better tools to fight it now than I did as a kid. So yeah fuck America's healthcare system, but also fuck capitalism and modern society for making so many people feel like they are better off dead.

no but like there was this one friend i had when i was 7-9 and then we moved away. my mom stayed in contact with her (because shed been cheating on my dad with her dad-- anyway) for like the entirety of our childhood. me and the friend stopped talking and i moved on with my life and everything

when i was nineteen, something happened with the friend, karen, and she left her boyfriend and for some fucking reason my mom invited her to come across the states and stay with us.

so she came across the states (like three states) and she had to sleep on the couch. and she also started acting like we were still best friends forever and kept trying to call me by a shitty ass nickname she gave me when i was 7-9 and was related to my deadname, which she knew i didnt go by anymore

she also was supposed to get a job if she was gonna stay with us because staying with us was supposed to be temporary.

she also followed me around and always wanted to be in my room with me and i just wanted to be left alone to do my own thing and draw and listen to music.

anyway she ended up leaving like a month or two later?? and apparently she got back together with her boyfriend and even got pregnant??? but she also went back because she was mad that she had to sleep on the couch (even though we told her she wouldnt have her own room or bed), that she had to get a job and couldnt just leech off everyone, and that i wasnt her best friend anymore and showed no interest

like i genuinely have no interest in people i was friends with litcherally 20 years ago, i do not care. i hadnt seen her in at least a decade, and i do not like my space taken up by other people.
