Anasuya Sarabhai.

Anasuya or Anusyabehn Sarabhai (11 November 1885 – 1 November 1972) was a pioneer of the women’s labour movement in India. She founded the Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association (Majdoor Mahajan Sangh), India's oldest union of textile workers, in 1920 and Kanyagruha, in 1927 to educate girlas of the mills.She was also a beloved friend and pupil of Mahatma Gandhi who considered her "Pujya"("Revered"), and it was Gandhi who made her lifelong president of Majdoor Mahajan Sangh .She was the close associate of Gandhi during his initial struggle at the Indian Independence Movement as well helped him establish his ashram at Sabarmati.

Tuesday, 14th April, was Ambedkar Jayanti. I found this video on YouTube and liked its caption. Babasaheb truly was a champion human being.

Did you know? B.R.Ambedkar was an alumnus of both London School of Economics and Columbia University. An untouchable from India getting doctorates from Ivy League colleges in early 1900s. Unbelievable!

I remember reading an Amar Chitra Katha, as a kid, on his life, where he says he felt more equal as a human being in London and US than in India. In school, he would not be allowed to drink water from the common pot. The peon had to pour water from a decent height so as not to defile anything. And, if the peon was not available, he couldn't drink water. Imagine, "No peon, no water."

Disgusted with the bigoted dictates of the Hindu manuscript Manusmriti, he organized a public burning of the book. In case you are wondering, Manusmriti laid down societal rules, which became the backbone for the rigid caste system and subjugation of women, including Sati. In his later life, Babasaheb became a Buddhist.

In 1990, he was awarded a Bharat Ratna, posthumously. I guess Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther and a few others must have raised a toast that day, from wherever they were.

Bank of England Hikes Repo Rate by 75bps — UK’s 30-Year Fixed Mortgage Rate Jumps to 7%

The increase brings the United Kingdom’s main lending rate to 3%, after a majority of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members voted in favor of the 75bps increase.

Bank of England Hikes Repo Rate by 75bps, Monetary Policy Committee Insists More Rate Increases Will Be Needed to Obtain 2% Inflation Rate Goal

Seven out of nine MPC members voted in favor of a 75bps rate hike, while two MPC members voted for lower increases. According to the MPC, one member wanted a 50bps hike, while another voted for a 25bps increase. The Bank of England’s rate hike on Thursday was the largest jump in 33 years or since 1989, and the MPC expects more rate increases will be required to tame inflation. “The majority of the Committee judges that, should the economy evolve broadly in line with the latest Monetary Policy Report projections, further increases in Bank Rate may be required for a sustainable return of inflation to target, albeit to a peak lower than priced into financial markets,” the MPC explained on Thursday. The news follows the Fed’s rate hike the day prior, when the U.S. central bank raised the rate by 75bps on Wednesday. At first, global markets took the Fed’s announcement as positive news, but Fed chair Jerome Powell’s commentary with the press that followed soon after, changed the mood. Powell remarked that the Fed anticipates “that ongoing increases will be appropriate” and he further stressed that “it is very premature, in my view, to think about or be talking about pausing our rate hikes.” Members of the Bank of England, the MPC, and economists think that the growth projections for the United Kingdom look dismal. The MPC noted on Thursday that things currently look “very challenging” for the U.K.’s economy. Similar to the U.S. central bank’s goals, the Bank of England is attempting to bring inflation down back to the 2% target. The U.K. and London-listed gilts (bonds) saw some gains after the announcement, while the British pound sterling slid 1.84% against the U.S. dollar. “For the current November forecast, and consistent with the Government’s announcements on 17 October, the MPC’s working assumption is that some fiscal support continues beyond the current six-month period of the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG), generating a stylised path for household energy prices over the next two years,” the MPC explained in the committee’s announcement.

MPC Members Are Uncertain if Energy Price Guarantee Will ‘Augment Inflationary Pressures,’ 30-Year Fixed Mortgage Rate in the U.K. Is Coasting Along at 7%

Recent data shows the U.K.’s inflation rate reached a high at 10.1% in September, while the European Union’s (EU) inflation rate tapped 9.9%. Furthermore, similar to the EU’s lending rates, the U.K.’s mortgage rates have climbed significantly. A 15-year mortgage in the U.K. is 6.154%, while a 30-year mortgage rate is 7%. The Bank of England’s repo rate and the London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR) are the main influencing rates that affect lending vehicles across the U.K. The MPC believes the EPG could curb or augment inflationary pressures tied to the energy sector. “Such support would mechanically limit further increases in the energy component of CPI inflation significantly, and reduce its volatility,” the MPC concluded on Thursday. “However, in boosting aggregate private demand relative to the August projections, the support could augment inflationary pressures in non-energy goods and services.” In addition to the MPC’s commentary, Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey told the press the central bank can’t make promises when it comes to future rate hikes. “We can’t make promises about future interest rates, but based on where we stand today we think Bank Rate will have to go up by less than currently priced in Energy ,” Bailey told the press after the 75bps rate hike. In terms of fighting inflation, Bailey added: If we do not act forcefully now it will be worse later on. Si è conclusa giovedì 24 Marzo la prima edizione del Symposium, organizzato dall’associazione United Italian Societies, in collaborazione con i membri King’s College London e London School of Economics. Dopo il primo evento, d��apertura, di mercoledì 23 Marzo, il Symposium propone una giornata intensa, piena di eventi e condita da tre super ospiti.

La giornata: Carlo Viviani, Filippo Taddei e Andrea Crisanti

È iniziato alle 14:00 l’evento, ad LSE, con il consigliere europeo della Commissione ECOFIN, l’italiano Carlo Viviani. Si è parlato di Europa tra Recovery e Resilience Fund, il programma messo in piedi dal parlamento europeo per sostenere la ripresa economica a seguito della pandemia di coronavirus. Tanti gli spunti interessanti che gli universitari italiani hanno avuto modo di esplorare. Tra questi, i successi e fallimenti di una delle prime politiche collettiva d’emergenza della comunità europea. Si sono discusse le cifre di questo piano di emergenza, gli obiettivi e le responsabilità di un paese come l’Italia - il più grande beneficiario del fondo ndr - nella spesa coscienziosa delle risorse messe a disposizione. Alle 16:00, poi, le stanze di LSE hanno anche ospitato una discussione con Filippo Taddei, Chief Economist per la sezione Southern Europe di Goldman Sachs. In un periodo, come quello odierno, di grande incertezza, la finanza è chiamata a rispondere presente. Per questo, il dottor Taddei ha avuto modo di trattare gli obiettivi futuri della City, tra fondi green e sforzi ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). A questi si aggiungono gli aiuti in materia di transizione digitale. Più tecnico-sanitario, invece, l’ultimo appuntamento, alle ore 18:00, con il dottore Andrea Crisanti. Questa volta svoltosi nel Lecture Theatre 3 di Bush House, l’evento ha affrontato il difficile tema dell’impatto della pandemia sui sistemi sanitari. Non è un mistero, infatti, che lo stesso sistema sanitario nazionale italiano ha risentito della pressione del Covid-19, simbolizzata dai lunghi turni di medici ed infermieri in prima linea e dalle difficoltà nel gestire i reparti di emergenza. La stessa NHS, in Inghilterra, ha risentito di problematiche simili nel corso di gran parte della pandemia.

Symposium United Italian Societies: si avvia la tradizione

Già nelle parole dell’organizzatore, il presidente di United Italian Societies Umberto Belluzzo, si è sentita l’intenzione di formare una vera e propria tradizione - quasi istituzione - con il Symposium. “Il progetto, assicurano i membri coinvolti nell’organizzazione, ha le premesse giuste per imporsi come un evento ricorrente nel mondo delle università inglesi”. D’altronde, l’esposizione dei giovani studenti a personalità italiane di spicco, nel mondo accademico e non, avrà l’effetto collaterale di una maggiore consapevolezza della particolarità del talento nostrano. Inoltre, il Symposium si impone come l’intermediario per avvicinare i giovani alle tematiche più pressanti dell’attualità e del futuro. Su UIS si accendono dunque gli abbaglianti riflettori di un prosperoso futuro come istituzione studentesca principale in Inghilterra.
