Congratulations, human, you have won the gift of Callisti Apple! You must hand it to a Jugdrali first gen, and I'll teleport you back to your world. See, I need to dispose of this apple somewhere. Getting tired seeing unending wars somewhere with magical blondes, curious giant horse, and some Helen from finance department!
We give the apple to Arvis, telling him it is the apple of a love goddess and he will obviously give it to Deirdre, telling her that she is the only queen deserving of living through this war. This of course, causes Lombard and Reptor to turn their suspicions against him after he blurted that out and thus we have Velthomer + Belhalla going head to head against Friege, Dozel and with Andrei’s help, Yngvi.
So basically the entirety of Chapter 5 of Fe4 has no enemies, Travant isn’t hired by Arvis to deal with Sigurd because he’s too busy fighting the other conspirators and thus literally most of Sigurd’s army will live at the end because the bad guys basically marked each other for death and Arvis can’t pull off a Belhalla BBQ because his army is destroyed. At least his words were true, Deirdre did indeed survive the war.

Well the most common comparison for caspar and linhardt is the ike soren dynamic, i dont feel thats quite accurate because it misses a lot of the actual subtleties in the relationship of ike soren and only really matches aesthetically speaking. What i do feel is the better comparison however, is comparing caspar and linhardt to reptor and lombard.
now, who are reptor and lombard you might be asking? easy, villains of fe4's gen 1 who get unwittingly used by arvis in his powerplays. reptor is the duke of the magical house friege, lombard the duke of the physical house dozel. reptor is the more so cool and collected one, the intellectual of the pair well lombard is the more hotheaded and aggressive one, the jock of the pair. reptor specializes in magic, lombard in axes.
so yeah, caspar and linhardt more so better parallel lombard and reptor. and you can kinda make that case for a lot of the black eagles house
edelgard = julius. well visually she tries to envoke the image of an arvis, i feel shes more so a julius in actual nature but thats just me.
hubert = manfroy for obvious reasons. i also feel hubert better supports the read of edelgard being julius not arvis, because well manfroy wasnt strictly speaking loyal to arvis he was that same diehard dedicated as hubert is to edelgard. well also sharing similar tendencies to 'go behind the back' if they feel its in their lieges best intrests.
ferdinand = if edelgards julius, then ferdinand is ishtar. similar reservations and hesitations about the actual nature of edelgard/juliuses actions, but willing to put those hesitations aside to hyper focus on their relation [or lack thereof in ferdinands case] to their emperor and on personal loyalty and duty to their family name and honour.
petra = travant actually. the 'foreign' villain whos not strictly speaking evil but is willing to do whatever it takes to see their own country prosper despite a tense international relation to their 'liege'.
bernadetta = dannan. cowardly by nature and easily intimidated by the emperor they serve. well dannans not technically a sacrificial lamb like bernie, he is the one serving at the front as it were as gen 2's first chapter last boss to atleast some unwilling capacity due to personal cowardice.
dorothea = i couldn't quite put a finger on it, but honestly my mind always comes back to comparing her to fe4s hilda. self centered and self interested magicians of considerable power, who serve the emperor to secure their own social positions. its not a clean comparison though so im willing to hear alternatives on this one.

Chapter 3 - Larcei, My Love
T/W: Cousin incest and brief rape mention.
“I don't want to fight.”
Iuchar, King Danan's middle son, said to himself over and over again as he prepared for battle.
Iuchar was well-known as a brave axe knight, and wasn't the type to hold back in a fight. However, this time, he found himself feeling hesitant.
He checked that none of his soldiers were near him, then muttered once more, "I don't want to fight."
He repeated those words over and over, trying to ascertain how he really felt...
He had two reasons not to fight. The first was that he was completely against the child hunts his father, Danan, had ordered, and the second was that Larcei was a member of the liberation army.
Danan was every bit like his father, Lombard: cruel, arrogant, greedy, and quick to become infuriated when others didn't agree with him.
When he received the news that Ganeishire Castle had fallen to the rebel army led by Seliph, Danan summoned all of the commanding officers serving as castle lords to Rivough Castle and ranted at them, as he always did.
"Ganeishire was taken by a ragtag rebel army of peasants!? What is the meaning of this!? You should all be ashamed of yourselves! Even you, Iuchar! Your castle is the closest one to Ganeishire! Why didn't you try to send reinforcements!?"
'I did, but by that time, the castle had already fallen!' He started to say, but stopped himself. He knew that saying his thoughts aloud would just add fuel to the fire.
"My reputation is ruined! If the empire were to find out about this, what would His Majesty think!? Listen up, Iuchar, Iucharba! I want you two to deploy immediately, and fight with all you've got. Their numbers are small. If you surround them in a field, then it should be an easy win. Don't show them any mercy! Kill them all! Especially those I am about to call out now. They are the instigators of this rebellion. Whoever kills them will receive a bounty. You must come back with their heads!"
After starting with the traitor Sigurd's son, Seliph, he called out seven more names: Shanan, Oifey, Diarmuid, Lester, Ulster, and Larcei.
'Larcei!' The moment he heard her name, Iuchar's heart skipped a beat. 'So she's part of the rebel army?'
He'd first met her two years ago at a summer festival that he snuck out to attend.
A beautiful girl with gorgeous black eyes dancing in a circle with several others caught his attention, so he started talking to her. While her response was blunt, it actually made him fall in love for the very first time. Her masculine way of speaking was very fresh and new to him.
After talking to her for a while, she finally told him her name, and they made plans for their next meeting.
Since then, they'd met up about once every two months. But although they met, it didn't mean that Iuchar realized how he felt about her. They simply went on a picnic when the weather was nice, or to a restaurant in a random village when it was cold, and talked for two or three hours.
Her behavior never once changed. Whenever his words were even a bit sweet, she was relentless in pointing it out. Strangely, he didn't find it unpleasant.
'Whenever Father's words are harsh, he's angry, so why isn't it the same with Larcei?'
Once he thought very carefully about it, he realized the reason why.
His father only ever thought about himself. In contrast, Larcei's thoughts were never about her own personal gain. Her words may have been sharp, but they had no ill will. Rather, there were even times when she spoke like that for his own good.
For example, when he first learned about the child hunts, he simply thought "They're bad!" and left it at that. He didn't feel that they concerned him. However, when talking to Larcei, she explained that such acts would destroy society, and he came to be firmly against them.
As the son of a king and lord of an Isaachian castle, he'd always seen the world through that lens, but thanks to Larcei, he was now able to think from the standpoint of each and every parent and child.
While traveling home to Rivough Castle, he was accompanied for part of the way by his younger brother, Iucharba, lord of Sophia Castle.
"This battle is pretty serious, huh?" Iucharba muttered.
"You think so, too? I have the same feeling."
"Larcei was one of the names amongst the instigators, right? I know her, actually."
His brother's words startled Iuchar, but he didn't know how to respond right away.
"I think I have a crush on her, so please, Big Brother, don't kill her. Spare only her. I’ll beg Father afterwards, and tell him I just want to save her life, whatever it takes.”
Iuchar missed his chance to speak his true feelings, and only responded by silently nodding.
'Maybe Larcei likes Iucharba back. But if she does, then why did she spend time with me?'
The two parted ways, and as Iuchar continued back to Rivough Castle, that was the only thing he could think about.
'If she does like him…' Every time he had that thought, his chest burned with jealousy.
'Then why did she hang out with me?' That thought gave him a bit of hope.
'Or maybe she met with us to change our minds?' That last thought filled him with the sinking feeling that he'd been led on.
'But, if she did lead me on, then what? Do I fight her?'
In the end, he decided that he didn't want to fight her.
-
The members of Iuchar's cavalry unit met up at the place they'd agreed upon and prepared for battle.
As they marched, several of his soldiers broke away from the group to pillage a nearby village, but he didn't have the energy to stop them.
Late into the afternoon, one of the soldiers rushed up to him and reported, "A person carrying a white flag is approaching us!"
"Are they an enemy?"
"We believe so. They appear to be a woman."
'Could it be… Larcei?' He immediately thought. 'I want to meet her and see what she has to say.'
"Alright then, I'm going to meet her. I'll be fine on my own. Stay here, everyone." Iuchar said, and galloped ahead.
The closer he got, the faster his heart pounded in his chest.
'That silhouette… it has to be Larcei's! I knew it! It is her!'
He stopped beside her, and while still on his horse, asked, "Larcei, have you come to surrender?"
"Don't be stupid! We would never!"
"Then what is the white flag for?"
"To try and stop the fight, so we can make a proposal."
"Why?"
"We're trying to change this world, where child hunts are carried out every day. Our final goal is to topple the empire and the Loptr Church, but first, we must defeat your father, Danan, here in Isaach. But I do not want to kill you, so I am requesting we call a ceasefire."
"So you're telling me to disobey my father's orders?"
"You are half Isaachian."
Those four words dredged up the memories he'd buried deep within his mind.
His mother had not been a princess, but a woman Danan found and kidnapped from her village.
In about three months time, he’d gotten bored of her. He would no longer look at her, and treated her as a common maid. All Isaachian women were beneath horses to him.
She died during childbirth, so Iuchar had no memories of a mother's kindness.
Whenever he cried as a child, he was immediately told, "Your mother was always crying! That's why you're a crybaby!"
He hated it, and learned to hold back his tears. He was even inspired to become a soldier because he didn’t want to be used as an example proving that his mother was weak.
'Mother was just forced to suffer a horrible fate because of Father! She wasn't weak. I am proof of that! How am I weak!?' Iuchar had thought to himself when he once won a horseback riding contest.
"I'm taking that as a yes. We'll continue down this path tomorrow morning.”
Larcei's words snapped him back to reality.
“W-wait. You’ve met Iucharba, haven’t you?”
“I have. I wanted to teach Danan’s sons what is right. But…”
"But what?"
"I came straight to your unit. Do you know what that means?"
Those words confused him. 'What is she trying to say?'
"I'm heading back now. See you."
"W-wait! What if I don’t agree to the ceasefire?"
"Well, I can't do anything about that. I'll come leading my soldiers tomorrow. If you say you approve of the child hunts, then you and I will fight one on one, understand?" She said, then turned around and went back the way she came.
-
That night, he couldn't stop thinking about what she meant.
'I've always felt refreshed after meeting with Larcei, but today was somehow different.’
After feeling lost all night long, he finally reached his conclusion.
‘That’s it, that’s what she was getting at! Larcei knows that if I was that confused, she was able to convince me. But that doesn’t mean that I came to my own conclusion. If I agree to a ceasefire with her, I'll be turning my back on both the empire and my father. In other words, I'll be throwing away who I've been until now. If I threw it all away only because I was convinced by her, I might regret it later. But if I made my choice all on my own, then...’
With that thought, he fell asleep, though he hadn't yet decided what to do.
-
He woke up the next morning feeling completely refreshed.
After breakfast, he saw the rebel army marching towards them in the distance.
"We still have thirty minutes until we fight! You can get ready without having to panic." Iuchar said to his subordinates while walking between their tables.
After cleaning up from breakfast, they got into formation, and began to march.
The rebel army was marching in one big group, while Iuchar and Iucharba's units were in "Crane Formation," a vertical line shaped formation that looked like a crane's wings spread out wide.
'If we stay like this, we can attack by surrounding them from both sides, and claim an easy victory.' Iuchar thought, but then realized that Larcei probably knew that's what he would do.
Larcei was leading her unit, walking ahead of them on her own, as she'd promised.
'She must know, and that's why she's been risking her own life like this since yesterday.'
He was overwhelmed with feelings of how beautiful she was. It was a different love than he'd ever felt for her before. He was seeing her not only as someone of the opposite sex, but also as her own person.
Iuchar halted his soldiers, and walked ahead alone.
He and Larcei stopped about ten meters from each other.
She was clearly nervous. The sight of that expression on her face made him realize how lovely she was all over again.
"Oh, Larcei… My love!” He called out loudly, sounding almost as if he was singing.
Larcei stared at him, completely dumbfounded.
"The day our fate is realized has finally come!"
"What are you talking about, Iuchar!? Did you eat something funny?"
"Larcei...
Your voice is like the song of a small bird
Your eyes sparkle like the stars
Ah, I think…
I can no longer live without you…"
"Stop it! You're making me sick! This is a battlefield. Have you gone mad!?"
"No, I am quite sane. I made a poem for you, though you didn't seem to like it very much. My words are no lie, though. I will show you the proof right now." Iuchar said, then turned around.
"Everyone, from now on, we will fight alongside the liberation army, and put an end to the awful child hunts! Starting today, we fight for love, justice, and Larcei!”
His soldiers all cheered in unison, surprising Iuchar, as he thought he'd have to join the liberation army on his own. However, his soldiers were mostly Isaachians, and agreed with him.
'Just about everyone finds the child hunts unacceptable.'
Seeing Iuchar try to team up with the liberation army made Iucharba go wild with jealousy and rage.
"Dammit! How dare Brother run ahead and ally with Larcei!? Now I can never forgive her! I'll kill every last one of them! All soldiers! Attack!"
Iucharba led his soldiers, and ran not for the rebel army, but Iuchar's army.
The battle immediately became harsh. Both armies were made up of well trained soldiers, so neither side was superior or inferior to the other. However, once the liberation army joined in to support Iuchar's army, the outcome was quickly decided.
-
Afterwards, the main force of the liberation army continued to march, as they'd decided they wanted to make it to Isaach Castle that day.
Around two in the afternoon, they saw a pillar of smoke coming from the direction of Isaach Castle. And when they got even closer, a cloud of dust rose up ahead of them.
"What do you think that’s about, Prince Iuchar?" Oifey guided his horse next to Iuchar's and asked.
"I think General Schmitt and his cavalry are responsible."
"Are they strong?"
"Yes, and quite so."
"Then we should probably retreat for now, I'm guessing?"
"There's a village atop the left hand side of the hill. I think we should go protect it."
The liberation army decided to take Iuchar's advice and retreated, then barricaded themselves within the village. The town was surrounded by a steep slope, so as long as they guarded the village's entrance, the enemy wouldn't be able to invade.
Schmidt's cavalry unit soon came to attack the village. They took turns charging the entrance and throwing javelins inside. The cavalry seemed to be well trained in this maneuver, as they put up a consistent, stubborn fight. If they had attacked in an area where they could put their horses' mobility to use, they probably would have been able to do a lot of damage.
However, Oifey's and Iuchar's units took turns protecting the entrance, and did not let the enemy invade the village. Any of Schmidt's soldiers that traveled the village perimeter looking for another entrance were met with Lester's arrows and Arthur's meteors.
As the calvary took more and more damage, both the soldiers and their horses started to look tired. When the time was right, Seliph shouted,"Okay, counterattack now! Everyone, chaaaarge!"
With their speed greatly hampered, the cavalry no longer had any strength left. The course of the battle changed so quickly that it was as if the two sides had never been evenly matched at all.
While the liberation army was resting up after the battle, Seliph approached Iuchar and said, "Prince Iuchar, thanks to you, we were able to save our allies. Thank you."
"Don't mention it! We're allies! And by the way, I'm not a prince anymore. I threw that title away earlier today."
"I understand, Iuchar. I look forward to working with you."
"Yeah, same here!"
-
They spent the night at the village, and arrived at Isaach Castle the next day around noon.
What Iuchar saw was there was a castle in ruin. The areas made of stone were left intact, but the rest was destroyed, torn apart, or on fire. Everything of value had been stolen.
'Father must have gotten angry and ordered this in response to my betrayal. But I actually feel relieved.'
Rivough Castle was surrounded on three sides, so the liberation army decided to wait for a while before carrying out a full attack on it. They were hoping that upon seeing their numbers, the Isaachian soldiers would come to surrender. As they'd predicted, over the course of five days, many of the soldiers snuck out of Rivough, and joined the liberation army.
When it came time to finally start the attack, they broke down the castle gate, and Iuchar led the front line into the castle. The remaining enemy soldiers didn't try to fight, instead rushing towards the main building, dismounting their horses, and running inside.
Iuchar’s father was sitting on the throne, encased in a full suit of armor.
Iuchar readied his battle axe and slowly approached him.
"What is this? Are you trying to turn your blade against your own father?"
Iuchar didn't answer.
Danan stood up and grabbed his own axe.
Iuchar walked up to the staircase leading to the throne. The three sets of stairs his father was standing atop of made him look very tall.
'In our current positions, I'd lose the fight for sure.' Iuchar thought.
His father didn't seem interested in giving up the high ground, so they glared at each other for a while longer.
His father's gaze made him try to remember what their relationship had been like until now. He'd been a person Iuchar couldn't possibly compare to, and tried to make him obey every order without question.
'I must forget the past, and think of what he's done! To the children, and the villagers, and my mother!'
However, it was hard to keep the exact same thoughts in his mind. Still, he tried his hardest to endure, and not give up.
He didn't know how much time had passed. Sweat broke out on his forehead.
Then--
"Iuchar!"
He heard someone scream.
It was just for a moment, but he looked away from his opponent.
That was when Danan jumped.
He tried to swing his axe at Iuchar's torso, but Iuchar was a split second faster, and dashed towards his chest.
Iuchar swung down his axe, smashing his father's helmet and lodging his weapon into the top of Danan’s head.
Iuchar heard his father's axe fall on the floor.
"Iuchar!" Larcei rushed up to him.
He slowly turned around.
"Iuchar! Thank goodness you're safe!"
-
After that, she tried to avoid him. He wondered why, but the look of relief on her face told him everything.
"I'm sorry, Iuchar. When I realized just how much you'd been forced to throw away, I couldn't bring myself to look at you. But then, when I saw you rush into the castle…"
"Don't worry about it, Larcei. The things I threw away meant nothing to me. What I gained is worth so much more."
A small smile lit up her face.
It was the first time Iuchar had ever seen her make such a kind expression.

FE4/War of the Roses AU pls
OMG so many.
“Child,” said the Duchess as she arranged the strands of Deirdre’s silvery hair. “This is the destiny that’s awaited you from the day of your birth. He is the king.”
So Deirdre = Elizabeth Woodville, in the sense that young King Sigurd of the House of York contracts a secret marriage with her. Cigyun lives as an analogue of Jacquetta Woodville and sees her daughter married.
To hide the arrangement with Deirdre, Sigurd embarks on the boneheaded plan to “marry” (bigamously) Lady Edain of Jungby Salisbury so that his advisor Duke Reptor stops tryna arrange foreign marriages for him. This pisses Reptor the fuck off because he feels humiliated on the world stage.
"He is not interested in the lady from Provence, nor in any from France, nor Castile, nor Savoy, nor Denmark. My child, once we have exhausted these diplomatic games, our cousin King Sigurd will discover the most perfect rose of England has always been within this garden."
Even tho Reptor was planning his own long game, assuming Sigurd was too immature to go for any foreign brides and would ultimately be charmed by his favorite daughter Tailtiu. The Friege sisters = the Neville sisters (Isabel and Anne) here, and their ultimate marriages to Lex and Azelle respectively an echo of the Neville girls’ union to the royal dukes of Clarence and Gloucester.
"Right. So if Prince Cuan died suddenly, and we-- England, I mean, not us-- got ahold of his little daughter, and married her to the Prince of Wales that doesn't exist yet..."
"Then Reptor is the grandfather of the king of all Britain."
"Right. England, Scotland, and Ireland under one crown. At least once that Orkneys mess is settled. On the other hand, if something terrible were to befall our king right now, as it stands, Prince Cuan could lay claim on England through his wife and daughter and send that army he's constantly building down across the Wall and we're all ruled by the Scots."
"There's an awful lot of sudden death in these scenarios," said Lex.
Reptor has some other grand plans, too.
When Reptor + Lombard shove Sigurd off the throne, he hides out in the court of Duchess Rahna of Burgundy until, like Edward IV, he regroups and invades England once more. Unlike Edward, who thrashed the Lancastrians and reigned for 13 more years in increasing girth and tyranny, Sigurd is betrayed by Arvis when he tries to enter the Tower of London.
“Sigurd, Duke of York. I hereby arrest you on charges of treason against the King’s Grace.”
“On whose authority?”
“Mine own.”
Arvis pulls some King Henry VII bullshit and ante-dates his reign by one day before Sigurd’s death to declare all Sigurd’s supporters traitors.
Then King Arvis marries lovely Lady Deirdre, unaware of her prior entanglements and of the child being raised in Brittany, and then all hell starts to unfurl...

I finished Chapter 5 of FE4! Aideen ended up being the absolute MVP because she just put Reptor to sleep, letting me just do whatever I wanted for the rest of that map. I realise now that I probably could have had Lachesis Silence him and that would have been just as effective and a lot less expensive, but eh, whatever.
For some reason I decided it was worth my time to use Lombard for some level grinding, so everyone ended up promoted. I didn’t get everyone to Level 30, though, because Lachesis still had the Elite ring and honestly after spending a zillion levels trying to make Dew and Ardan sort of good I just could not be arsed.
Anyway! Roll call under the cut, in honour of those I’m about to lose!
Sigurd is Sigurd, not much to say about him except that he’s obviously amazing. I don’t think I ended up getting 50 kills on the Silver Sword. He’s also a bit underlevelled, because I didn’t want to use him as too much of a crutch in the early game.
These two... are just not very good at all. Noish in particular really fell behind due to his lack of Pursuit. I gave them some better situational weapons to help out (Armourslayer and Horseslayer respectively), but it didn’t help that much. They’re not married anyway, so it doesn’t really matter.
Promoting Ardan was a complete waste of time but I did it anyway. That’s all I have to say. Thanks for the Pursuit Ring, my sweet boy. I wish I could just let you retire to a farm somewhere, because you were not cut out for the soldier’s life at all.
Still did a great job holding the castle, though.
I paired Aideen with Jamke, so Midayle didn’t really get that much attention from me. He still turned out useful, though, especially with all the fliers in Chapter 4. I gave him the Killer Bow for a while.
OKAY so I had to go back to an earlier save state because I forgot to give Lewyn Holsety, but he has it now so Ced is going to be an absolute monster. I’m honestly not sure if it’s possible for Lewyn to be a bad unit. He hit the level cap, so I didn’t use him much in the final chapter.
Luna is a good skill. To be honest, Holyn isn’t that interesting to me as a character or as a unit, so that’s all I have to say about him. He’s gonna pass the Thunder and Defence swords down to Patty, which is good for her. Getting him the Thunder sword was a pain in the butt, because for some reason I decided I didn’t want to buy it, so he had to kill the guy who had it and he had like a 40% hit rate.
Azelle! <3 <3 <3
Objectively I guess he’s not as good as Lewyn, but he has a horse and he’s a good boy who I love with all my heart. He’s married to Tailtyu, so Arthur’s gonna get a Magic Ring, which is pretty cool. I invested a lot in level grinding him in the prologue, so he wouldn’t fall behind later on. He also had the Speed Ring for a while.
Jamka’s just really good. Like I know he’s a sniper and they’re not supposed to be that good, but every time I wanted him to kill something, he did it. And his son will have a horse, so his one weakness is going to be erased in the next generation.
Claude’s main purpose was just to use Reserve any time I thought I might be in trouble, and he did an excellent job of it. I also gave the Return staff to him for a while for extra utility (and levels), but he’s married to Sylvia so I sold it off to Lachesis. I should maybe have also sold the Reserve staff to her or Aideen, but to be honest the two of them both have just... so much *stuff* in their inventories, that I figured they could live without it. I may regret this later.
I sold all of Beowulf’s stuff because I forgot Lex can’t buy swords. That’s all I have to say about this guy. He turned out okay, though.
Lex rammed into the level cap at 100 mph. He is a god among men. He really doesn’t need the Shield ring, but I figure Ulster might like it, so I let him keep it. Also it made him basically invincible to everything exxcept magic. He’s keeping his axes so I can sell them off to Johan/Johalva (haven’t decided yet) asap.
Dew had the Defence Sword for a while, which helped him out a lot and is the reason I decided in the end to give it to Patty. It’s nice to have a slightly durable thief, which Dew was not for a long time.
Anyway, he did his job, which was mostly visiting villages and ferrying money to people. I’m kind of hoping Patty might be a little bit less tissue-paper-like, so that I can have her actually steal some things maybe.
(He did steal a lot in the first chapter, because you can park him on the village and he basically becomes invincible).
Training Lachesis was a pain, especially since I was trying to promote Finn and have the two of them hook up at the same time. But boy was it worth it. Master Knight is just so goddamn good. I mostly used her for her staff rank later on, since Ethlyn and Deirdre were both gone.
I also really like Lachesis as a character, so I’m glad she turned out well.
Ayra is one of my other godlike characters. She and Lex were the ultimate power couple. Once she got the Hero sword, there wasn’t anything that could get in her way. She ended up getting the final hit on Reptor, too.
She’s got so many swords because I’m planning to have Larcei sell some to Ulster. Really, though, the Hero Sword is all she needs, and hopefully Larcei will end up the same way.
Pegasus Knights. They’re just good. Hoping Fee will like that Wind Sword.
I love Tailtyu so much even though she’s kind of a pain to level up. She has the Thief Sword because I don’t really know what else to do with it.
Knowing what’s going to happen to Tailtyu is probably one of the most painful things about finishing this chapter.
Sylvia has absolutely everything she needs to make Lene perfect. Her stats are terrible but that doesn’t matter, because she’s a dancer with a Knight ring and a Leg ring. I know some people say to give the Leg ring to Seliph to start with, but oh well.
All hail! The MVP of the final chapter! Look at her staves! The utility! She also still has the Sleep Staff but it’s in storage! With both the Warp staff and the Return ring, getting people promoted has never been easier (or will never be easier, when Lana inherits those things).
Her low movement is kind of a pain, but Aideen’s just so goddamn useful no matter what. I love staves in FE4 - being able to repair them has made me a lot less hesitant to use the ones with cool effects, even though I do still have to worry about money a bit.
And finally, Brigid! She’s good! She has the Ichival but I never used it, so I never really found out what she’s capable of. Sorry Brigid, but you’re kind of being overshadowed by your twin sister right now in my heart.
Not pictured: Cuan (Lv 17), Ethlyn (lv 27!!!!), and Finn (promoted, but I forget what level he was at).
And that’s it! I’ve spent five chapters with these characters, so I’m really sad to see them go. It’s funny, when you spend so much time trying to keep them alive on the battlefield, knowing that in the end it’s going to be all for nothing.
Or, well, not all for nothing. But I’m still going to lose them after all this time, and that’s hard.
We turn to face Aida, as the doors of destiny swing open...

I feel like part of why I love so many characters from fe4 is because they somehow all feel like deconstructions of tropes that at the time ( being the mid-90s ) weren’t really challenged all that often yet??
gen 1 of fe4 plays out as this sprawling awful political drama. you have backstabbing and betrayal and orchestrated wars and coups and conspiracies and this terrible crapsack world, pardon my language to use a tvtropes term, and meanwhile the main character you play as is this almost stereotypical jrpg protag who does everything because he’s blindly trusting in his perceived friends and he thinks it’s right. people call sigurd stupid but I don’t think it’s fair to call it stupidity so much as genre blindness --- he is a good man who just can’t turn down someone he sees in need, who has natural skill but is inexperienced and not very clever ( not stupid, but I wouldn’t call him brilliant either. his intelligence is about average. his heart is what’s superb about him, not his mind ), and can’t see the effects his actions will have in the future until it’s far too late because to survive in the terrible cutthroat world of Jugdral you need to be a chessmaster and he isn’t. He isn’t supposed to be, he’s supposed to be the heartwarming all-loving hero. and he dies for it.
gen 2 of fe4 pulls the reverse where the entire story feels much more stereotypically jrpg-ish where you must avenge your parents’ demise!! defeat the evil demon dragon plagueing the land!! rebel against the evil empire!! save the world!! etc. except this time the protag isn’t the typical jrpg brave and true protag. Seliph is literally just some kid who feels forced into this position because everybody is like you’re your father’s son, son of Sigurd, you must do this, but it feels super obvious while playing the game that Seliph would much rather be literally anywhere else. The boy is not suited for war. He has a continent’s people raising him up calling him a messiah and actively describes how that fills him with anxiety, how he can’t handle the pressure and is mortified of breaking down and letting Jugdral’s people down, how he feels cornered and forced into all of this and it’s fantastic.
even the villains!! usually any ‘evil cult-led empire must be defeated by the plucky rebels’ narrative has stale villains even if they are fleshed out, but fe4 did so good with most of them?? I mean you have victor and hilda who are just awful people for no hecking reason but among the entire cast I feel like they’re the only bad guys who are genuinely BAD guys. travant just wanted to end thracia’s starvation problem by seizing fertile land he felt was being unjustly occupied by leonster to feed his people. arvis just wanted to end discrimination and end the political corruption and the severe inequality problem in jugdral. reptor was prime minister and felt cheated out of power, lombard felt like his duchy was being cast aside because the prince favoured others personally more, heck even manfroy just wanted the genocide against followers of his religion to end at his core and got warped into ‘and also now we punish those who did this genocide against us’ along the way and loptyr’s motivations were fuelled by his existential angst over the slow degradation and extinction of dragonkind as a race and all of them are still far from good people!! they’re still so messed up, but ( other than manfroy and loptyr because Hm ) most of the bigger bad guys can’t be called evil so much as sorely, sorely misguided in their methodology and bad for what they’ve done to get what they wanted more than what it was that they actually wanted and for a game from the mid 90s that’s!! wow!! everyone is free to think this game is trash sdjfbhks I’m well aware of how split the opinion on genealogy of the holy war is but gosh darn it it’s swell in my book
#⊰ ♖ ⊱ FROM ASHES TO ASHES / OUT OF CHARACTER#(( pigeon cries over how much she loves gene.alogy more at 10 ))#(( sb: oh yeah what about jul.ius ))#(( me: you ever meet jul.ius the jul.ius you meet in game is lop.tyr in juli.us' skin jul.ius is canonically a good boy who did nothing ))#(( but get possessed sdhgvbfjshk poor kid rest in pepperonis ))

Part 6: Various Names
These are all bullet-pointed, and the first part will be translated in Kaga’s own voice, since that’s how they’re written.
I also decided to include my own notes on the origin of various names. This post is also crazy long, and mostly just exists so I can keep all my ideas and facts straight.
Berwick Saga
The “Bren” (ブレン) of Brenthunder (ブレンサンダー) and the Bren Crossbow (ブレンクロスボウ) is from the famous English Bren Light Machine Gun. Military enthusiasts probably immediately recognized this.
Gorzevalus (ゴーゼワロス) was named by the designer who wrote that map’s scenario. I don’t know where he got the name, but he’s a very serious person, so I doubt he intended it to be funny.
A derrick (デリック) is a type of large crane. Since they can be used to lift heavy items as well as help survey undersea wrecks, I wanted Professor Almuth’s first name to give the impression of historical site exploration.
Things like Critical Knife and Wallenstein were simply abbreviated (クリティカルナイフ > クリテカルナイフ, and ヴァレンシュタイン > ワレンスタイン) due to a 7-character limit we had early in development. I must’ve simply missed them when I double-checked later. Similarly, we abbreviated Composite Bow (コンポジットボウ > コンジットボウ).
[Note: this won’t apply to the translation patch, since there’s no character limit.]
Sherpa (シェルパ) are a tribe of mountain guides at the base of Mt. Everest. I chose the name to parallel “Highlanders.” As for Highlanders (ハイランダー), they’re a historical ethnic group from Scotland who were renowned as brave warriors in history. I’ve been told that the Sherpa’s appearance closely resembles the hero of a certain manga, but I’ve never read it, so it’s just a coincidence.
I chose the name Kramer (クレイマー) because it’s close to “climber,” since he’s got a natural gift for climbing cliffs as a skill. I’m on the fence whether it should be to be a nickname or not... I guess it’s probably a nickname he picked himself.
Sapphire (サフィア) and Ruby (ルヴィ) are named after the precious stones, naturally.
Names like Roswick (ロズオーク), Vanmilion (バンミリオン), Shirrock (̪シロック), Quescria (クエスクリア), and the like I just made up. I didn’t take them from anywhere in particular.
[Note: in the patch, “Shirrock” will be Sherlock, which is a real name.]
Faramir (ファラミア) and Olwen (オルウェン) are from The Lord of the Rings.
[Note: I’m not sure which LotR character Olwen is supposed to be. The closest one it matches is Arwen (アルウェン), but that’s a woman...]
Faramir’s class name Wanderer (渡り戦士) is borrowed from a certain manga. Sorry, Ms. Hikawa!
Sylvis (シルウィス), Larentia (ラレンティア), Pfeizal (ファイサル), etc. are mythological/historical people; I also sometimes used the names of mythological weapons for people, too.
Most other proper names are original or just common names, like Lynette, Reese, Bernard, etc.
TearRing Saga
It’s hardly worth mentioning, but Katri (カトリ) is just a plain ranch girl’s name. Back in the day, a lot of people thought it had something to do with baseball pitching. It’s from an old anime based on a very old children’s story from Finland, so it’s natural people wouldn’t recognize where it came from.
[Note: I have no clue what Kaga means about the baseball thing.]
Ente (エンテ) is German for “duck,” while Möwe (メーヴェ) means “seagull.” In other words, it’s an play on words where if you add eyes (メ) to a duck (カモ), you get a seagull (カモメ), meant to parallel that when Ente awakens to her true self, she becomes Möwe. Naturally, there’s also the added meaning that she wants to fly in the skies freely like a seagull, not be a duck that hides itself underwater.
[Note: I had these names as “Enteh” and “Maeve” in the TRS patch. The official romanization of エンテ is definitely “Enteh,” too. Oh well...]
Neyfa (ネイファ) was the name of a character in a short story I wrote a long time ago.
Tia (ティーエ) is from Aul Toba Tieh (アウル・トバティーエ), a character from a certain fantasy novel.
Lionheart (レオンハート), of course, means “lion-hearted.” Historically, it was the epithet of the King Richard I of England. While being Lionheart’s name, this was also the source of Richard’s title the Lion Prince of Mahl (マールの獅子王子)... though I will admit now that this was pretty lazy naming on my part.
The mamluks (マムルーク) were medieval Arab slave warriors renowned for their elite archery, who later conquered Egypt and Syria. Therefore, by calling Lionheart’s class “mamluk,” I wanted to convey the imagery of a strong, elite horseman leading his own unique regiment.
[Note: this was “Nomadic Trooper” in the TRS patch.]

Shields
Ajax’s Shield (”Sakos Aiantos” in the translation): the shield of the Greek hero Ajax the Great in the Iliad, made of seven layers of oxhide and one of bronze. Most famously, it could even block the javelin of the Trojan hero Hector, which pierced only the first six layers.

Simurgh Feather: sīmurğ (سیمرغ), a bird from Iranian myth
Ariadne Thread: Ἀριάδνη, a woman from Greek myth who helped Theseus traverse the Labyrinth using a spool of thread
Eye of Balor: Balor, king of the Fomorians in Irish myth, who had a third eye on his forehead that wrought destruction on any it looked at.
Item Names: Translation
Swords
Succeed → Nothung: the name of Gramr (see above) given in Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. “Succeed” is a crappy name for a sword, and it’s Reese’s final weapon, so I wanted a theme naming with his earlier personal sword, Gramr.
Spears
Phalanx → Doru: δόρυ, the type of spear that Greek hoplites utilized in phalanx formation. Changed, naturally, because “phalanx” is a military formation/unit rather than a weapon.
Wotan Spear → Angon: Angon, a type of javelin used by Germanic peoples. I would’ve used “Gungnir,” since that’s the spear of Wotan/ Óðinn, but the Wotan Spear isn’t a high-tier weapon, or even the strongest thrown spear.
Bows/Crossbows
Sylph Bow → Killer Bow: I didn’t want to use “Sylph,” since there are wind-element weapons in Berwick Saga, but this isn’t one of them.
Magic Bow Aperion → Abaddon: Assuming “Aperion” is indeed a corruption of “Apollyon” (see above), I prefer the sound of the Hebrew name, Abaddon.
Apollo Bow → Argyrotoxus: Ἀργυρότοξος, an epithet of Apollo meaning “of the silver bow.”
Otinus Crossbow → Ollerus: Assuming “Otinus” is indeed a faux-latinization of “Óðinn,“ I didn’t think that Óðinn was a very fitting god to associate with a bow. Instead, I chose Ollerus, which is the latinization of the name of Ullr, Norse god of archery. As a bonus, Ullr/Ollerus is closely associated with Óðinn: during the episode where Óðinn is exiled for ten years for not being manly enough, Ullr is the one who rules the gods temporarily in his stead (during which time Ullr even uses the name Óðinn).
Gatling Bow → Chu-ko-nu: Following the tradition of the TRS1 translation, since guns aren’t in TRS, and Richard Gatling isn’t a TRS character.
Bren Crossbow → Rapid Crossbow: Similarly, guns aren’t in TRS, so “Bren” is out.
Dora → Espringal: While “ballista” and “scorpio” are both names of siege weapons, I have no idea what a “dora” is supposed to be... so I chose an actual one.
Dark Magic (I wanted the names of these spells to all be mythological references like they are in FE)
Black Meteo → Wormwood: a falling star that ruins the waters of the Earth in the Biblical book Revelation.
Berserk → Lyssa: Λύσσα, goddess of mad frenzy and rabies in Greek myth.
Sleep → Oneiroi: Ὄνειροι, the gods of dreams in Greek myth
Bau Crash → Kishar’s Wrath: Kišar (𒀭𒆠𒊹), the personified Earth in Babylonian myth. Since Bau (see above) is a goddess of motherhood rather than the earth, Kishar is more appropriate. I chose Kishar rather than the more ancient and well-established goddess Ki (also an earth goddess), since the name Ki is too short for players to reasonably identify. Even though I’m probably misunderstanding バウ as the goddess Bau, I stuck with it.
Janura → Nosferatu: to fit in line with FE’s Nosferatu; from adaptations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Tumahann → Saehrimnir: Sæhrímnir, the beast killed and eaten--then resurrected--by the Æsir and einherjar every evening in Norse myth. I wanted to use something bestial or related to eating, since this spell drains the EXP of its victim.
Hellworm → Jormungandr: to fit in line with FE’s Jormungandr; from Jǫrmungandr, the serpent surrounding Miðgarðr in Norse myth
Shields
Perushīda → Perseid: I’m not really sure what Perushīda is supposed to be, so I picked something that sounded close. The Perseids are a meteor shower occurring in late summer; named after the Perseid dynasty said to descend from the mythological hero Perseus
Ajax’s Shield → Sakos Aiantos: σᾰ́κος Αἴᾰντος, Epic Greek for “Ajax’s shield.” Fun Fact: Ajax’s shield in particular is called a sakos (”leather shield”) rather than an aspis (the general word for “shield”) in the Iliad. I didn’t want to use the English words, since I didn’t want to assert that Ajax was a person in the TRS universe. I’m even considering making it just Sakos, actually.
Fire-God Shield → Kojin Shield: Sanbō-Kōjin (三宝荒神, “wild god of the three treasures”), or just Kōjin, a Shinto god of fire, cooking, and the hearth. I used “Kōjin” rather than “Kagu-Tsuchi” (the god of fire in general) in order to nicely parallel the names of the related Fūjin Shield and Raijin Shield.
Accessories, etc.
Sun Charm → Dawn Charm: While the original name is a reference to the skill FE Sol, that name doesn’t fit with what the charm really does. It gives +10 Hit, so it makes it easier to see, hence “dawn.”
Meteor Charm → Dusk Charm: While the original name is a reference to the FE skill Astra, that name doesn’t fit with what the charm really does. It gives +10 Avoid, so it makes it harder be seen, hence “dusk.”
Moonlight Charm → Vanish Charm: While the original name is a reference to the FE skill Luna, that name doesn’t fit with what the charm really does. It activates the skill Hide, hence “vanish.”
Purgatory Bracelet → Gambler’s Brace: This brace lowers Hit and Avoid by 10 but increases Strength and Defense by 2, so it’s risky. I assume “purgatory” was meant to refer to the in-between-good-and-bad-for-you stat bonus given. The thing is, nobody who’s non-Catholic seems to understand that purgatory is a good place; hence, the old name is just plain dumb.
Ligan/Ishian Racehorse: These horses increase your Movement, hence “racehorse.”
Ligan Warhorse: This horse increases your Damage, hence “warhorse.”
Ishian/Sinonan Stallion: This horse increases your Speed, and the word “stallion” evokes an imagery of a wild, quick horse.

hmm i don't know many of your fandoms asides from fe4; so fe4
here it goes!
the character i least understand : hm... Julia? Julia. I can’t even understand how/why she stays in the background at the end of FE4 “watching over Seliph with a warm gaze” when there are so many things to do, helping rebuild the country, taking care of the remaining loptyrians, etc...
interactions i enjoyed the most : Ares and Lene. Lene is wonderful, she doesn’t care about his theatrics or his “views” about what a mercenary is or what he should do - killing Seliph because of Siggy, Lene has the nerve to call him an idiot and make him realise that maybe she’s right.
the character who scares me the most : Sprites aside, I’d say Manfroy. The guy can brainwash major naga ladies to do his biding, what else can he do? Is there something he can’t do?!
the character who is mostly like me : wow. Dimna (that’s him right) who’s shaking in his boots in the last map because this is a place where only Crusaders have their place and I’m not one!
hottest looks character : Gen 1 Arvis?
one thing i dislike about my fave character : Eyvel isn’t in FE4 so... he opted to kill everyone to bring a new empire raising from the ashes of the old Grannvale when he could/might have come to the same results (making a better world) if he bothered to talk about it to the right people, i.e. not Lombard and Reptor.
one thing i like about my hated character : even if it made him live a miserable life and if he didn’t let her talk at all during her intro, I suppose taking care of a child who was hurt counts as a “good thing” F!Lewyn did in his not-life.
a quote or scene that haunts me : well I triggered Ayra’s death quote once and the “X i wanted to see you one last time” really made me feel sad, imagine it could be canon if X was Finn!
a death that left me indifferent : Byron. He doesn’t even mention his daughter!
a character i wish died but didn’t : in FE4 it’s rather the inverse and F!Lewyn is a zombie so.. uh... I can’t think of any, sorry :’(
my ship that never sailed : Faval/Ishtar

Chapter 9: And So, the Door of Fate Opens...
Part 5
Sigurd gathered his entire army in front of the castle and announced that the war was over.
He then went on to thank everyone for all their hard work, and stated that those who were not from Grannvale and wished to return home, should do so now.
That night, a huge celebration banquet was held at Velthomer Castle.
-
The next day, those who wished to return home did so. The Silessian soldiers and Orgahill Pirates traveled to the north, the Augustrian soldiers to the west, and the Isaachian soldiers to the east.
Before they left, Sigurd generously divided the army’s remaining funds between all of them.
There were less than two hundred soldiers remaining.
The next morning, they started their final march together.
They spent the night at a town along the way, and arrived in Belhalla Field the next afternoon.
There, the Roten Ritter was lined up and waiting for them.
When Lewyn saw them, he said to Sigurd, “There’s way too many people here, don’t you think?”
Sigurd nodded, stopped Farron, and turned towards his army. “If we move towards the palace in a large unit, then we will invite another misunderstanding. I’ve decided the army will stay here, and only a limited number of people will accompany me during my audience with the emperor.”
He then chose who would go with him - Lewyn, Claud, Lex, Azel, Brigid, Ayra, Jamke, Alec, Noish, Arden, Midir, Beowulf, and Chulainn. He left out Erinys and Lachesis.
Only less than twenty people joined him, walking slowly down the long path formed between the two lines of the Roten Ritter on either side of them.
Finally, they could see the Belhalla Castle gate.
Arvis stood before it.
When Sigurd’s group stopped in front of him, he dismounted his horse, and said, “Lord Sigurd, it is with joy that I officially recognize your return home. Congratulations.”
"Duke Arvis, we apologize for making you come all this way just to greet us. If I may ask, is His Majesty in the palace?"
"His Majesty is so gravely ill, that he cannot even leave his bed anymore. That is why I am handling all government affairs myself now."
"So that's what's going on. It pains my heart to hear it. His Majesty was very worried about me, so I will visit the palace after this to apologize to him."
"You will not be able to do that."
"Huh?"
"You will die here as a traitor. I cannot allow you to see the king."
"Wh-What are you… Duke Arvis, what do you mean?"
"Muah ha ha, you mean you haven't realized it yet? You're so soft! You plotted with Duke Byron to usurp the throne! There is no changing that fact. As the husband of the late Prince Kurth's daughter, I must punish you! Don't take it personally."
'He's such a good person, that it makes him a fool.' Arvis thought as he looked at Sigurd's face, dumbfounded in disbelief.
'Byron, Reptor, Lombard, Ring, Chagall, Dakkar… they were all such foolish men, and fools stand in the way of the utopia I am constructing. The nicer those like Sigurd are, the more of an obstacle they are. So there is no other option but for them all to die.'
-
The ideal Arvis had imagined was the construction of the Grannvalian Empire. The foundation of that empire would be equality. Everyone would be equal no matter which country they came from, the commoners would be protected from the self-centered orders of the nobles by law, and all people would be guaranteed freedom of religion. Of course, the followers of the Loptr Church would not be persecuted either, and would be able to freely worship Loptous.
The truth was, that on the night of his coming-of-age ceremony, Archbishop Manfroy of the Loptr Church had told him that Loptrian blood flowed through his veins. His mother, Cigyun, had been a descendant of Maira.
After he'd heard those words, Arvis was very troubled by them. He'd once witnessed a mother and child be burned at the stake just for being followers of Loptous, and realized there was a chance that something similar could happen to him. He worried and worried, and in the end, his conclusion was that all discrimination must be erased from the world.
'And this is something that only I can do. Only I, who has inherited both the blood of both a Crusader and Loptous, can truly understand the meaning of discrimination.'
To turn his ideals into reality, he would have to demolish the entire current structure of the world.
And to do so, he'd decided to use Manfroy.
Manfroy and the other members of the church stirred up the greed within the nobles across every region of Jugdral, while also planting suspicion in their hearts, causing every country to get involved in the war that soon spanned the entire continent. Whether the Loptr Church’s actions were good or evil did not matter. It was all about upheaving the old structure of society.
‘Anyone would probably think to use the Loptr Church. Yes, I used them. But I did not work with them. I said that very clearly to Manfroy. “I will acknowledge your existence, but I have absolutely no intention of reviving the Loptrian Empire.” When this war is over, I will subjugate all of the surrounding countries, and establish the Grannvalian Empire. My work will be the dawn of a utopia state, and my name will be forever etched into Jugdralian history. Arvis, the first Emperor of Grannvale, will be the most famous name in all of Jugdral.’
Arvis was in very high spirits, and wanted to show his new bride the world he was creating.
‘When she sees that I rule over everything, it should add to her good memories.’
She’d appeared in front of his villa looking confused and lost, yet he’d fallen in love with her at first sight. He hadn't realized it at that time, but it was because she looked just like his mother, Cigyun. She even had the same lavender hair as his mother.
However, while she could speak, she'd lost all memory of her past. At first, Arvis had been very curious about where she was from and what kind of life she'd led until they'd met. Once they'd married and vowed to love each other, though, it didn't matter to him much anymore. Still, whenever he saw her lost in thought, he couldn't help but remember that she had a past he knew nothing about.
At one of those moments, he'd gently rubbed her shoulders and said, "There's no need for you to push yourself to remember. The future is much more precious than the past. If we make lots of good memories from now on, everything will be fine even if you don’t know your past, won’t it?”
He’d said those words for himself as much as he’d said them for her.
-
Arvis stepped back to reach for his wife's hand, who he'd told to stay safe behind the soldiers, and gestured for her to stand next to him.
"Look, this is the man who killed your father! Sigurd, son of Duke Byron! His punishment will be execution!"
The moment Arvis finished speaking, Sigurd screamed, "Deirdre!!"
And she gasped when she heard his voice.
She felt like she'd heard it somewhere before. She furrowed her brows, stared straight at him, and tried her hardest to remember.
"So it was you! Wasn't it, Deirdre!? It was him!"
"Do you… know me…?"
"You are… my…"
Sigurd started to answer, but Arvis cut off their conversation by ushering her back behind the soldiers so roughly that he almost pushed her. "Escort my wife into the palace immediately."
Two soldiers each grabbed one of her hands.
"Wait, Lord Arvis… Just give me a moment with him…"
"Deirdre!!"
"I order the entire army to kill Sigurd, the traitor, and his accomplices! There is no need to bring any of them back alive. Execute them on the spot!"
"Damn you, Arvis!" Sigurd unsheathed Tyrfing and tried to attack, but Arvis' soldiers pushed him back.
He cut down all the soldiers, only for Arvis to attack him with a Valflame spell a moment later.
His body felt hotter and hotter with each passing second, yet he still took one step forward, then another, and another. 'Arvis!'
Valflame's fire hit Sigurd once again.
He could no longer continue forward, nor could he move at all…. 'Deirdre!!'
When the fire burned out, his charred remains were still standing proud and tall.
And in his right hand, Tyrfing was unchanged, emanating the same glittering light as always.
-
'Erinys, run!' Lewyn shouted in his heart, while casting a Forseti spell and walking north. 'I won't die. There's so much that I must do.'
-
When Erinys realized that things had taken a turn for the worse at Belhalla Castle, she yelled, "Run, everyone! Hurry, before the enemy reaches us!"
Then, she spoke directly to Lachesis. "Get on my pegasus!"
Lachesis climbed on behind her, and the two flew north.
'Lord Lewyn told me he won't die.' She repeated to herself over and over the entire way home to Silesse. 'Lord Lewyn told me he won't die.'
-
Beowulf jumped on his horse and started galloping in the direction he knew Lachesis was in, but standing in his way was a large group of enemy soldiers.
"Outta my way!" He yelled, and forced his way into their formation.
He thought nothing of defense, only swinging his sword over and over and over again.
However, their numbers were too great, and he couldn't make any progress.
'Run, Lachesis!'
A lance stabbed into his side.
As he fell from his horse, his last thought was, 'A noble knight like you needs to make it out of this alive…’
-
Chulainn stood still, not even unsheathing his sword.
The enemy approaching him thought that he wasn't going to resist, and rushed closer.
Suddenly, like a flash of light, he attacked the enemy. Then, he stepped to the side, and cut down another enemy. He jumped, and killed yet another enemy the moment he hit the ground.
But as he killed a fourth enemy, he was struck by a meteor.
'I don't have any regrets, Sigurd.’
-
Alec said to Noish, "Seems like this is the end."
"Yeah…"
"Shall we both charge at once?"
"Sure…"
"Alright, good luck."
"You too…"
They both shouted a battle cry, then charged their horses straight into the enemies surrounding them.
Arden followed along after them. "Hey, don't leave me behind!"
-
At the sight of Arvis' cruel strategy, Azel was finally able to overcome his inferiority complex.
'Attacking us like this makes you the loser, Brother.'
He countered a ball of fire that an enemy had cast with one of his own.
'I was happier than you'll ever be, Arvis.'
There were enemies coming at him from three different directions.
He cast two consecutive fireballs, killing two of them.
However, he couldn't take out the third one in time.
'Tailtiu, take care of the children…'
-
Midair and Brigid fought side-by-side.
They shot arrows one after the other, keeping their enemies from getting close to them.
But no arrow could stop a burning meteor that was headed straight for them.
It hit Brigid's right arm, and fell directly on top of Midir.
Brigid knew immediately that her arm was now limp and useless. Midir died instantly.
'We were so happy together.'
She endured the intense pain coursing through her body, held Yewfelle under her left arm, and waited for the enemies to approach her.
"I am Princess Brigid of Jungby! Go ahead, kill me!"
-
Ayra and Lex fought back-to-back.
They no longer had any idea how many enemies they'd killed.
Suddenly, Ayra heard Lex scream in pain.
She stepped back, and realized that he'd collapsed.
'Lex, we're in the middle of battle, so I can't hold you. But I will die with you.'
After that, she continued to fight, but didn't budge an inch.
Finally, lance that she could have dodged if she had moved pierced her side.
She fell atop her husband.
'We will never part ever again, Lex.'
-
Jamke focused on attacking the enemy general.
He jumped out from behind Sigurd's charred body and aimed an arrow right at the space between Arvis' eyes.
The arrow missed its mark, instead hitting Arvis' left shoulder, but still caused him to stagger.
Then, a fireball slammed into Jamke from behind.
'Aideen, take care of Lester…'
-
Claud witnessed the events that the Valkyrie Staff had not shown him in utter disbelief.
'This is so terrible. ...Gods, are you really allowing this to happen?’
He prayed to the staff, but it didn't respond.
'This must be wrong.'
The moment he had that thought, he realized what his duty was.
He tightened his grip around the staff, and prayed again.
'Gods, I accept what is happening. But no matter how I look at it, I know it must be wrong. Please do what you must to right this wrong, for the sake of our future. I exchange my life, so that justice and love may win…'
A light shot out of the gem in response.
'Ah… thank you for accepting my prayer. With this, I have fulfilled my duty. Please accept my offering of my life.'
Not even a second later, a meteor fell on top of him.
-
Lewyn suddenly felt a strange power course through his body.
'I will not die. There's so much that I must do.'
At first, he'd just been trying to convince himself, but now, he really believed he would survive.
He walked forward and cast Forseti spells in rapid succession, without pausing even once.
Each spell caused an explosion front of him, blowing his enemies up into bits and sending their dismembered body parts flying.
'I will not die.'
Lewyn kept walking.
He cast spell after spell, and continued forward...

Chapter 1: The Battle of Behalla
In this world, there are many endings that are endings in appearance only, and actually the beginning of another story.
The Battle of Belhalla, which occurred in early spring of the Grann Year 760, was one such ending.
The Grannvalian Empire's records only described a simple account: the Grannvalian King's son-in-law, House Velthomer's Duke Arvis, who would afterwards become the first emperor of the Grannvalian Empire; defeated the liberation army at Belhalla Field, killed the ringleader, Prince Sigurd of House Chalphy; and squashed the rebellion.
Compared to the accounts left describing Arvis’ magnificent victories during the subsequent battles that unified the lands, it was really quite short, and when those who didn’t know the details read it, they thought the rebellion that Sigurd started was not that big of an event in the slightest.
But what really happened?
The records list no other casualties than Prince Sigurd. However, at the Battle of Belhalla, and in the chain of battles, schemes, and other events leading up to it; the powerful leaders across the continent were divided into enemy and ally, bringing many of them to their deaths.
Even more surprising, was that among the deceased were descendants of the Twelve Crusaders of legend, including many of those who'd inherited legendary weapons:
Prince Kurth of The Kingdom of Grannvale, inheritor to The Book of Naga
Duke Byron and Prince Sigurd of House Chalphy, both inheritors to the Holy Sword, Tyrfing
King Eldigan of The Kingdom of Nordion, inheritor to the Demon Sword, Mystletainn
Prince Quan of The Kingdom of Leonster, inheritor to the Earth Lance, Gáe Bolg
Princess Brigid of House Jungby, inheritor to the Holy Bow, Yewfelle
Duke Lombard of House Dozel, inheritor to the Holy Axe, Helswath
Duke Reptor of House Freige, inheritor to the Holy Thunder Tome, Mjölnir
High Priest Claud of House Edda, inheritor to the Holy Staff, Valkyrie
Prince Lewyn of The Kingdom of Silesse, inheritor to the Holy Wind Tome, Forseti
and King Mananan of The Kingdom of Isaach, inheritor to the Divine Blade, Balmung.
The only two survivors were Duke Arvis of House Velthomer, inheritor to the Holy Fire Tome, Valflame; and King Travant of the Kingdom of Thracia, inheritor to the Heavens Lance, Gungnir.
For so many of the Crusaders to meet death… it was only common sense that something unthinkable had happened, leading people to create all sorts of rumors.
One such rumor was that countless fireballs fell from the heavens during The Battle of Belhalla.
"If that isn’t what happened, then how else could so many of the Crusaders have died?" The person who started the rumor wondered.
But those rumors simply explained all that had transpired, and didn't shed light on any of the evil plots being carried out in the background.
Because if even Duke Arvis, as a major character of those stories being kept secret from the world, did not notice that The Battle of Belhalla was nothing more than the end of a prologue, it was only natural that the people who started those (laughably exaggerated) rumors did not realize it, either.
With all of the rebellious uprisings stamped out, Arvis traveled to the surrounding countries of Silesse, located to the north; and Leonster, located to the east; and subjugated them. They no longer had proper leaders, so conquering them was easier than taking candy from a baby. With those final acts, the Kingdom of Grannvale succeeded in obtaining hegemony of the entire Judgralian continent.
King Azmur of Grannvale was on death's door, leading Arvis to immediately become the first emperor of the Grannvalian Empire, as if it had already been decided.
No one objected to his ascension. In fact, everyone overwhelmingly supported it. Arvis’ popularity among the commoners was particularly unusual, but it was because they had long wished for a strong, intelligent leader.
As they did not know the true meaning of the Battle of Belhalla, they could not view Arvis, who'd suppressed the rebellion, as anyone but the rightful king.
Arvis was a very ambitious man, who had long wished to unify the continent and become the first emperor of Grannvale. And upon fulfilling that wish, he moved on to a new ambition - etching his name into history as an extraordinarily benevolent ruler.
Arvis established laws guaranteeing the commoners their rights, while making the nobles unable to do whatever selfish things they wished with their territories.
The Loptr Church, previously oppressed as a cult, had contributed greatly to Arvis' victory. Arvis, in truth, had not only the blood of a Crusader flowing through his veins, but also that of the Loptr Church's founder, Archbishop Gale. For that reason, the church secretly supported him. For their efforts, once Arvis gained the authority to do so, he publicly recognized them for the first time in 220 years.
However, he did not allow them anything more than that, nor did he give their current leader, Archbishop Manfroy, a say in the government.
In the beginning of his reign, Arvis was an ideal leader for the people.
-
And so, seventeen years passed.
The Battle of Belhalla became just like any other historical event, and the story appeared to be over.
However, it was still being written in silence.
Fine Grannvalian wines rest within a barrel for ten long years, slowly maturing. This story is like one of those fine wines. It continued to mature, simply evading the eyes of the people during those ten long years.
The first sign was that the Loptr Church slowly began to influence our story. In the Miletos region, the church revived the rituals sacrificing children to the Dark God Loptous, once carried out during the Loptrian Empire. This was in spite of Emperor Arvis strongly prohibiting them...
Next, the kings of the remote regions slowly began to ignore the laws Arvis had established. Having observed the Loptr Church’s behavior, they thought the emperor had lost his authority.
The kings levied high taxes on the commoners and punished them without trial, all while indulging in hedonistic lifestyles.
This marked the beginning of the end for our story. However, neither the commoners (nor the kings) realized that yet. The commoners simply blamed the kings and Loptr Church as the cause for their hardships, and hoped for a savior that would change it all.
Then, their previous opinions of the rebel Sigurd changed.
His image was originally that of a man who always stood as the leader of his army on the front line, bathing his entire body in the blood of his enemies. He was known as "Blood-Soaked Sigurd," the terrifying rebel. However, at some point, he became "Sigurd, the man who knows no fear," and the epitome of bravery. The new stories passed around were those of his kindness.
They told many examples of the times in-between battle when he'd shown endless compassion towards his subordinates and the people, representing everything they wanted from their new savior.
"That’s right! Sigurd is a man who stood up for the people, and is the true hero!" They thought.
At the same time, a rumor circulated that Sigurd had a son named Seliph, who was growing into a fine young man.
"Where is he?"
"In a hidden village in a remote region of Isaach!"
"He is the one who will save us! I know it!"
"Let's gather everyone who can fight, and go to Isaach to join his army!"
"I heard that Lord Seliph's army already chased the imperial army out of Isaach!"
"Then let's start our own rebellion! If we do, I bet they'll come help us!"
The rumors were indeed just rumors, and reality was quite different.
It was true that Sigurd's son Seliph was living in a small Isaachian town called Tirnanog, and was learning how to fight in preparation for the day he knew would come. However, he viewed it as a day that was still very far off (though he knew it would come). It was also more accurate to say that he still wasn't prepared for a rebellion yet at all.
He had two teachers, one who taught him tactics, and another who taught him swordsmanship.
His tactics teacher was Oifey, who was both a knight and a tactician.
The members of Oifey's family had served each generation of House Chalphy as their tacticians. He was still only fourteen when Sigurd’s battles began, but insisted Sigurd allow him to come along, and Sigurd agreed (under the condition that he not step foot on the battlefield). He'd been confident that his studies would undoubtedly be helpful to Sigurd.
Seliph’s other teacher was Prince Shannan of Isaach. Shannan was a descendant of Sword Saint Od, one of the Twelve Crusaders, and was the next in line to inherit the Divine Blade Balmung.
Isaach had fallen when Grannvale invaded during Shannan's childhood, and Balmung had been lost at that time. Afterwards, his young aunt, Ayra, guided him through a series of unfortunate events, leading them to be captured in The Kingdom of Verdane, then saved by Sigurd.
Before The Battle of Belhalla, Sigurd had entrusted Seliph to Oifey, and ordered him, along with Shannan, to leave the battlefield. While traveling, Oifey and Shannan learned of Sigurd's loss at Belhalla, and after they rediscussed their plans, they changed their destination to Isaach. Ever since then, the three of them had been avoiding the Empire's search parties, leading them to settle in Tirnanog, located near the northern tip of Isaach.
Sigurd suspected that he might die, and chose arguably the best teachers in the world for his son.
They were both prodigies and had a strong sense of duty.
They believed that the only way to repay their gratitude to Sigurd, and clear Sigurd’s regrets, was to raise Seliph to become a warrior fit to be called a descendant of Crusader Baldur. The Holy Weapons could not be used by all of the people of the Crusader’s bloodlines, but only by one person in each generation. Whether or not a person was the chosen one and could wield their bloodline’s Holy Weapon, was sometimes recognized at birth, but sometimes unknown until the moment they first touched it. The moment they did so, they would feel warmth course through their entire body, and be filled with a mysterious power. After that, they could display the power of their Holy Weapon, a great power that should be feared.
House Chalphy's Holy Weapon, the Holy Sword Tyrfing, was currently lost (it had likely fallen into the hands of Emperor Arvis). Still, both Shannan and Oifey agreed that they should prepare a powerful enough army to take the sword back.
Seliph had inherited his bright blue hair from his father, but recently, his expressions, gestures, and manner of speaking were also all shockingly similar to Sigurd's.
And his swordplay was improving at an incredible rate.
"Seliph, there's no question that you are the inheritor to Tyrfing." Both Shannan and Oifey had said this to him countless times now.
In addition to those two, though he wasn't exactly a teacher, another man occasionally visited Tirnanog, and kept Seliph updated on current events.
His name was Lewyn. He was a descendant of the Crusader Wind Mage Ced, Prince of Silesse, and inheritor to the Holy Wind Tome Forseti.
Lewyn had fought alongside Sigurd and participated in The Battle of Belhalla, so they'd long thought that he'd met the same fate as his other allies on that day. However, roughly two years prior, he'd shown up at their house without any warning whatsoever..
He wore the same bard's clothing he'd had since long ago. His expression, specifically the shape of his forehead and eyebrows, looked a bit more prudent, but otherwise, he wasn't any different from the Lewyn Shannan and Oifey remembered.
Once they'd introduced themselves to each other, Seliph begged Lewyn to tell him stories of his father. Lewyn stared off into space, likely picturing his bygone days with Sigurd in his head, then started to speak.
"He always fought like a demon, and led the charge, striking fear in the hearts of his enemies while simultaneously inspiring his allies.
“However, that didn't mean he liked fighting. He was always considering whether or not he could solve things without fighting. Anyone who was beside him, knew very well about those worries.
“On the other hand, once he'd made the decision to fight, he always led his army and charged straight into the enemy lines. He would make the enemies’ blades swing towards him. He was trying to push himself to the boundary between life and death, where he couldn’t afford to have worries or doubts, and he was also gathering the enemies around him to try to lessen the injuries his allies suffered, even if only just a little.
“In summary, as I said before, he inspired his allies, struck fear in the hearts of his enemies, and his battles always ended in victory."
"May I ask one thing?" Oifey asked nervously.
“What is it?”
"What happened at The Battle of Belhalla?"
"It was no battle.” Lewyn hissed.
"It wasn't?"
"It was a surprise attack, and a massacre."
They all gasped at Lewyn’s unexpected words.
"After our long fight was finally over, we crossed the Aed Desert, and attacked Grannvale. Our first destination was Velthomer, as we'd received word that Reptor, leading the Friegian Army, was waiting there for us. It was supposed to be a very difficult battle. Instead, by the time we made it to the battlefield, Reptor's army was already in chaos. Arvis' army had attacked them from behind.
“We didn't have any idea what was going on, but we still attacked Reptor's army. After being betrayed by their allies, they didn't last long, and were quickly destroyed.
“Afterwards, General Aida, who had led Arvis' army during that battle, approached Sigurd, and said, ‘Lord Sigurd, you and Duke Byron have been cleared of all accounts of treason. We knew that everything, including Prince Kurth's assassination, was all plotted by Duke Reptor. King Azmur said that he would like to apologize to you for the misunderstanding, and propose a ceasefire, if you and your allies would just come to Belhalla.’
“Anti-war Sigurd happily accepted the proposal. Because they'd watched Arvis' army attack Reptor, the thought didn't even cross his mind that she could be lying. So much so, that he told everyone in his army from other countries that they could return home if they wished.
"Three days later, we reached Belhalla Field. The Grannvalian Army was lined up in front of the castle to greet us.
“‘There's way too many people here.’ I told Sigurd.
“Sigurd nodded, stopped his horse, and turned around to face everyone.
“‘If we move towards the palace in a large unit, then we will invite another misunderstanding. I’ve decided that the army will stay here, and only a limited number of people will accompany me during my audience with the emperor.’
“I immediately realized that Sigurd had misunderstood the meaning of what I'd said. I wasn't referring to the number of our allies, but the number of Grannvalian soldiers. However, I realized later that Sigurd had already known. That’s why he had his unit stay far behind him, so they could quickly escape when the time came.
“And so, just under twenty people proceeded between the two lines of the Grannvalian Army. Among them, Shannan, was your Aunt Ayra. Her beloved, Lex of House Dozel, was with her. And I was there with my beloved. Ayra and Lex walked next to each other, and my beloved and I were looking at each other the entire time. We both knew. We knew it was the last time we'd ever see each other.
“The other couples had known that as well - Princess Lachesis and the free knight Beowulf, Princess Tailtiu and Prince Azel, the dancer Silvia and High Priest Claud, Princess Aideen and Prince Jamke, and Princess Brigid and the archer Midir… they all tried to enjoy the little time they had left, and not spoil it with fears over what was to come.
“At the end of the long lines of soldiers waited not King Azmur, but Arvis.
“Arvis then gave his entire army the order. ‘Capture the traitor Sigurd, and his party! There is no need to take them in alive! Execute them on the spot!’
“The elite of Arvis' army all attacked us at once. The mages stationed on the hills surrounding us also rained down burning meteors on us.
“You probably understand now why I said that the Battle of Belhalla was no battle."
Everything Lewyn had shared was true, however, he'd left out one detail for Seliph's sake.
And that was that King Azmur's granddaughter had shown herself at Arvis' side for a brief moment. She was not only the princess of Grannvale, but also Deirdre, Sigurd's wife and Seliph’s mother, who'd gone missing two years prior. She appeared to have lost all memory of her past for an unknown reason. Otherwise, she never would have betrayed Sigurd. They'd met while Sigurd was fighting in the Kingdom of Verdane, and fallen in love at first sight.
Afterwards, she and Arvis went on to have twins, a boy and a girl. The older one, the boy, was Crown Prince Julius of the Grannvalian Empire, and Seliph's younger brother from a different father.
Though Lewyn had finished his story, no one could speak for a long time.
Finally, Seliph declared, "I cannot forgive Arvis for what he did! I hate fighting, just as my father did. But Arvis is the one person I cannot forgive."
"You've helped me make up my mind too, Seliph. I hate him! He killed my lord! When you raise your army, I intend to dedicate my life to you." Oifey said.
"I can't forgive him, either! He is Lord Sigurd and my aunt's murderer, so I will kill him!" Shannan yelled.
And so, another story began.
The writers of this new story were bathed in a light that shined so brightly, there wasn't a person alive who wouldn't soon learn of them. Meanwhile, the writers of a hidden story were buried deep within darkness, so that no one would learn of them...

Chapter 9 - And So, the Door of Fate Opens...
Part 2
Sigurd thought over the meaning of his father’s words as he traveled back the way he came, and made it back to camp just as the sun began to rise.
Oifey caught sight of him, and rushed up to him. “We couldn’t find you! We were so worried! Where did you go?”
“Huh? Oh. ...I just needed some time to think.”
“You look very tired. Please take some time to rest…”
“I can’t. We must defeat Lombard today.”
“But you should rest for a bit! We can storm the castle in the afternoon.”
“No, we must go after him now.”
“But the soldiers haven’t even eaten yet!”
“Then I’ll go by myself.” Sigurd said, sounding very much like a spoiled child.
“Understood. I'll prepare the vanguard. Please try to wait until they are ready.”
Sigurd nodded in acknowledgement, so Oifey started running around, gathering up their best soldiers.
“What are you up to, Sigurd? Are you going to launch one of your famous surprise attacks?” Lewyn looked at him and said in a slightly joking tone.
“Yes. Please blow down the castle gate with your magic. I’ll rush in after that.”
“You’re really enthusiastic about this fight. Did something happen?”
“Not really. Lombard is my father’s murderer. So I’m going to kill him with this sword.”
“Whoa, that’s a nice blade. Did you just get it?”
“Yes. It’s the Holy Blade, Tyrfing.”
“So you’ve finally inherited it! Excited to see how well it cuts?” Lewyn walked up to the castle gate, then raised his right hand.
The surrounding air gathered in his palm, then he threw it.
The ball of Forseti’s magic flew forward, and pulverized the gate on impact.
Without saying another word, Sigurd unsheathed Tyrfing, mounted Farron, and charged towards the castle.
A few moments later, the other soldiers all followed after him.
There was one line of enemies already guarding the castle, waiting for their attack.
Sigurd rushed towards them, cut down the soldiers on his left and right, then kept going towards the main building.
Lombard was standing at the top of the stairs. “Well well well, if it isn’t Byron’s brat.”
“You murdered not only Prince Kurt, but also my father! Now accept your punishment!”
“You sure can talk big. But do you really think you can match my Holy Axe, Helswath!?”
“Don’t you remember this blade, Lombard?”
“What!? Tyrfing!? H-How did you get that…?”
“I’ll pave your way to hell!”
Farron climbed the stairs in one smooth jump.
Lombard swung Helswath at Farron’s eyes. The horse turned his head, just barely dodging the attack. At the same time, Sigurd swung Tyrfing, and sliced Lombard’s head clean off his body.
Sigurd jumped off Farron, picked up Lombard’s head, held it high in the air, and yelled, “Lombard is dead! The battle is over!”
-
With the castle conquered, Sigurd ordered his army to gather in the courtyard.
The soldiers all started to travel through the castle gate, surprised to learn that their army had already taken the castle.
Once everyone had arrived, Sigurd stood at the top of the stairs, where he’d defeated Lombard.
When they saw his face, everyone was even more surprised. No one had ever seen him tired, ever.
“The war for Silesse is over! I thank you all so much for your hard work. However, this still doesn’t mean that we are done fighting yet. We can’t leave Grannvale as it is now. We must continue fighting until one side is defeated, be it us or them. Our army will now cross the Isaachian deserts, and march towards Grannvale, to defeat them once and for all!”
Everyone cheered in response.
Sigurd raised a hand to quiet them, then continued his speech.
“We march towards victory. However, from now until the very end, we will be fighting a proper army. We must remember that every fight will be long and hard. Some battles may become chaotic. Horrors we never thought possible might become a reality. I only want those who continue fighting to be those who understand the true meaning of what is about to happen. I also want any children who are not yet old enough to fight, pregnant women, and injured people, to stay here. If you do not wish to stay here, then please return to your homes, or at the very least, find a safe place unaffected by the war. I plan to keep my son Seliph far away from the battlefield from now on as well.”
Commotions broke out throughout the crowd.
Seliph was almost two years old now. He always walked up to everyone and started smiling and babbling, so he’d become the mascot for the army. Until this point, it had been unthinkable that he’d ever stay behind.
With that decision made, everyone had to think twice about just how difficult the remaining battles would be.
“Those who will stay behind may go their own separate ways when they are ready. I know it will be difficult to say goodbye to the allies you fought together with. But I still want you to understand my feelings on this matter. That is all. Sorry to disrupt your breakfast.” Sigurd returned to his room and called for Oifey.
Oifey came in right away, with Shanan following after him.
Sigurd glanced over at Shanan, then turned to Oifey and said, “Oifey, if you travel northeast from here, you’ll end up in Isaachian territory. I heard that Lombard’s eldest son Danan has been stationed there ever since Isaach lost the war with Grannvale, but his influence probably hasn’t reached the countryside yet. So I want you to…”
“Wait, you’re asking me to flee? I won’t! I will be by your side until the very end, Lord Sigurd!”
“Oifey, I know you might think I’m being selfish, but please understand. I don’t want Seliph to be lost. He’s not even two yet. I wouldn’t be able to fight if I had such a young child with me. ...Please, Oifey. I want you to protect Seliph. You’re the only one I can count on to do this.”
“Lord Sigurd… Do you really mean that? …Okay. I’ll do as you say. I will guard Lord Seliph with my life. But in return, please promise me, that when this war is finally over, you’ll come back for him. ...If you don’t, then I can’t leave.”
“Yes. I promise. I will come for him.”
“I trust you.”
“Wait!” Shanan cut in. “It’s my duty to protect Seliph. I told both you and Deirdre that I would. Don’t give him to Oifey until Deirdre says to.”
“Shanan, I know you’re still guilty about what happened to Deirdre, but it’s okay. You don’t have to be any longer.”
“No! I’ll protect Seliph! The people of Isaach hate Grannvale. So Oifey can’t go alone and protect him there. But I am a prince of Isaach, so I can. And I made a promise to Deirdre…”
“Lord Sigurd, I strongly agree with him. You might be thinking that you don’t want to get him involved, but he’s already turning out to be a fine warrior. We need Shanan’s power to gain the cooperation of the Isaachian people.”
“You’re right. ...I’m sorry, Shanan. I’ll entrust Seliph to you. Please protect him.”
“I will! You can trust me with him! I’ll keep getting stronger, and keep him safe. Then maybe one day… He will forgive me for what happened to Deirdre…”
And so, Oifey and Seliph went to Isaach to keep Seliph safe. Ayra’s twins Ulster and Larcei, Aideen’s son Lester, and Lachesis’ son Diarmuid also went with them.
Brigid’s son Faval and Tailtiu’s son Arthur were kept in Silesse.
Sigurd suggested all women who may be pregnant stay in Silese, and they all swore that they weren’t.
However, the truth was that Aideen, Lachesis, Brigid, and Tailtiu were all carrying their second child. Erinys was also pregnant with her first.
Sigurd also told Claud that Silvia should stay in Silesse because she wasn’t a fighter. After taking time to think about it, he agreed, and went to tell Silvia.
“Silvia, please stay in Silesse with Lene.”
“I won’t! Do you really think there’s an idiot alive who would leave a real man once she’s found him!?”
“Then I have something to tell you. I never intended to speak about this to anyone, but you’re my wife, so I’ll tell you. Please don’t say a word about this to anyone else.”
“What could possibly be that big a deal…?”
“Listen, we’re going to lose this war. Everyone central to the fight is going to die.”
“No…”
“I prayed to the Valkyrie Staff at the Bragi Tower, and the gem showed me what’s going to happen.”
“I… I can’t believe that. It must be a lie! You’re just trying to play a trick me, right? C’mon, please. Tell me it’s all a lie!”
“No, unfortunately, it’s not.”
“Then why are you going?”
“The staff hid something from me. It is my duty to witness it with my own eyes.”
“That can’t be… Then I’ll go too! If you’re going to die, then I’ll die with you!”
“Listen, Silvia. Our lives don’t always end entirely when we die. It is inevitable that all living things will die and lose their physical forms, but it is not all for naught. We will change, and take on an even more perfect form.
“Even if I die, I’ll be born again. There is already another life growing inside of you… They may be the next me. That is why you must live, Silvia. For me... For us.”
“Are you saying you’ll live on inside of me, Claud?”
“And Lene, right? And the child you’re carrying now, right? You possess an extraordinary power. That is why you can live on without me. I’m the one who can’t live without you. Over the past year, you’ve shared that power with me, and changed me so much. Because of you, I can calmly face my own death. Thank you for everything. You’ve taught me how much joy and happiness there is in this life.”
“Oh, Claud…” Silvia hugged him tight, and started crying.
“I’ll live. I’ll raise our children. Lene will be just like me. And if our next child is a boy, he’ll be just like you…”
-
Ten days after the war in Silesse ended… Sigurd’s army prepared for the next battle, and left Luveck.
Those who continued on, and those who stayed behind, each kept their memories close to their hearts, and started down their new paths.

You said the FE4 novel shines in some areas such as showing the dark side of the antagonists, but doesn't that take some of the grayer aspects of the conflict? I mean, in the manga (I wanted to mention the game, but considering things like Lex barely saying anything about facing his father, what can I do?), Lombard and Reptor's motivations make the matter less cut and dried, which is more adequate for the overall tone of the story imo. Can you elaborate on that?
That’s a really good point. I simply wasn’t thinking about that angle when I typed the post out. I was impressed by how much can be said in so few words, which as we know is really important when space is even more of a premium in the novels vs. the games.
But the lack of a solid backstory and motivation for Lombard and Reptor is a huge flaw in the game and the novel, I agree. It’s just a fact that FE games are always ambitious in their ideas, often more so than the developers can reasonably accomplish. In FE4′s case, one of the sacrificed aspects was villain development. I think Arvis and Travant are the only ones who get at least half the fleshing out they deserve in-game.
This, as you said, is where Oosawa’s manga comes in. Whether or not fans actually like the directions she took the story in, or whether or not her ideas are “good” in the context of the rest of the story, she filled in a lot of those gaps left in the characters that didn’t get the backstory and or/attention they needed. Other characters get alternate interpretations that offer, well, the fun of alternate interpretations! I’d never take anything not in the original source material as 100% canon, but it’s, in general, fun to explore and see different possibilities.
While characters, plots, etc. being morally grey is what makes many of them shine, I think characters can still be great if they are as good or evil as can be. What’s important is that characters have personalities and actions with a backstory that logically progresses from one point to the next.
That being said, in the specific case of Lombard and Reptor, them being grey would indeed fit the themes of FE4 better, but it’s hard to say where I’d like to see them taken when we have so little to go off of.
It’s jarring that the FE4 villains couldn’t get the characterization they needed, especially when the political complexities (of Gen 1 at least) are so fleshed out. I’m neutral on ever getting a remake, but I’d definitely expect many of the villains to get some of the most development. The remakes have gotten more and more bold over time in their willingness to tweak the original game, so it’d be interesting to see where the remake team goes if one ever happens.
I hope this fully answers the question. If there’s any more detail you’re curious about, just ask! And if anyone feels I’m wrong on any of the details of the game, feel free to explain, I lose memories of story details in games pretty quickly after I play them. XD

Chapter 9 - And So, the Door of Fate Opens...
Part 1
The Grannvalian Army chose to occupy Luveck Castle, located to the east of Zaxon Castle.
Sigurd wanted to free it straight away, and return all of Silesse to Queen Rahna.
However, fighting battle after battle had exhausted his soldiers to their limits. There were also many who had wounds that still needed time to heal, and on top of that, all their weapons had to be repaired.
He had no choice but to let everyone rest for a substantial amount of time.
The Grannvalians also realized that Sigurd’s army was stronger than they’d thought, and chose to bide their time and bolster their forces.
Then, winter came earlier than normal, and Sigurd’s army was soon unable to make any moves.
At the beginning of winter, Silvia gave birth to a girl. She looked just like her mother, and even had the same bright green hair. Claud named her Lene, after High Priest Bragi’s wife.
-
Luveck Castle faced the Yied Desert, so the areas surrounding it did not get much snow, allowing the Grannvalian Army to use the winter to get even stronger.
Lombard was appointed as a general, and deployed with his axe knights from Dozel, Jungby’s arch knights, and two armored infantry units, creating one very powerful army all on their own.
Sigurd called in Oifey, and asked him about their upcoming fight.
“Duke Lombard is probably waiting until the snow melts from around Zaxon to go on the offensive. If we compared only the size of their army against ours, I’d say that theirs is more than twice as large as ours. So if their entire army attacked us all at once, then I predict it would be a very difficult battle for us.”
“I think so, too. I wanted to take Luveck before they were able to get that much stronger, but...”
“I think there’s a way to defeat them.”
“What is it?"
“We can’t fight here in Zaxon because of the snow. But if we were to only march through this area, then we could manage. We’d march through the snow, and be the ones to initiate the attack. Each unit of the Granvallian Army is stationed individually, so we can defeat them one by one.”
“Of course! You’re getting even better and better at this, Oifey.”
The problem was, they would have to set up camp along the way. After consulting with Lewyn, who knew Silessian winters like the back of his hand, they decided that they wouldn’t have any problems if they dug snow caves.
-
Sigurd’s army chose to deploy on a day of calm winds shortly after the new year.
Since they’d been able to rest back to full health, everyone had high morale.
With Silessian soldiers and their knowledge of winter leading them, they began to trudge through the deep snow.
At night, they entered the caves they’d dug, and were able to withstand even the harshest cold.
During the afternoon of the second day, Luveck Castle entered their line of sight, and there was hardly any snow from that point on.
Every member of Sigurd’s army gathered together, then all charged at once.
The enemy’s first line was a group of armored knights. However, they were caught completely off guard, and didn’t even have enough time to get into formation.
Sigurd’s cavalier unit struck first, scattering the enemy unit. Next, the infantry joined the fray, and cleaned up the survivors. The cavalry also went after anyone who tried to flee, so that there was no chance the second unit could be informed of the attack.
-
The next day, after eating a filling breakfast, Sigurd’s army marched again.
The second group was also made up of armored knights. Again, they panicked and got into formation, but because they, of course, had not been expecting to be attacked either, their formation was full of holes.
Just like the first time, the cavalry led the attack, and the infantry took advantage of the chaos to rout the enemies.
“Keep going! Let’s make it all the way to Luveck!” Sigurd yelled and raised his sword high into the sky.
“Yeaaaahhh!” All of his soldiers cheered in response.
Sigurd galloped off on Farron, and charged towards the third wave of the Grannvalian Army, comprised of axe knights.
“What are the rebels doing here!? ...Did they take out the front line!?” The axe knight’s commander, Slayder, mounted his horse in a panic.
Only a moment later, a cavalier covered in blood came flying at him.
“Dammit!” Slayder aimed his axe at Sigurd’s torso.
However, Sigurd reacted faster and sliced Slayder’s head off.
Realizing that they had lost, the axe knights fled, and Sigurd pressed onwards.
But the moment he realized the next wave of enemies were arch knights, he brought Farron to a halt. If they proceeded any further, they’d be within the enemies’ range.
“We will deploy and wait for the enemy! When the army charges at us, shoot arrows at them! Leave them no opportunity to counterattack!" The arch knight’s commander - Andorey - ordered.
Upon returning home, Reptor had reprimanded him harshly. “Who could be so stupid as to surrender a castle right after he’d captured it!?”
He knew that today was the day to make up for it. ‘We are the Beige Ritter, who defeated Silesse’s pegasus knights!! We can take care of a ragtag group of rebels no problem!’
And so, Andorey ordered his unit to attack.
But he’d made the most foolish mistake in all of battle strategy - he’d forgotten that units like arch knights were weak in direct combat.
Sigurd’s army baited them to prepare an attack, then charged and counterattacked the moment all the arch knights shot their arrows.
“N-No…! This can’t be happening!”
The sight of his soldiers collapsing on the ground one after the other filled Andorey with so much fear that he felt as if his heart had stopped.
Then, a woman appeared before him, and pulled back on her bow’s string.
Brigid had vowed that he was the only one of the arch knights that she would kill.
“I am Brigid. Words cannot describe how shameful it is that you killed Father, and joined Reptor!”
“Oh, so you’re Brigid? I’d heard that you’d fallen in with pirates. And now you’re one of the rebels? I will be the one to punish you for your actions!” Andorey bluffed.
“That’s my line! Now draw your bow!”
Andorey’s face turned pale at her words. The arrowhead pointing at him looked bigger than any he’d ever seen in his life.
“If you don’t draw, then I will be the first to fire!”
“W-Wait!” Andorey screamed and slowly pulled his bow’s string back.
“Now are you ready?”
“N-Not yet! J-Just hold on!” Andorey screamed, then shot his arrow. However, he hadn’t aimed properly, so it slightly missed its mark.
Brigid took her shot, and in the blink of an eye, Yewfelle’s arrow pierced Andorey’s heart.
-
Stationed on Luveck Castle’s east side were four ballistae, which the Grannvalian soldiers used to rain down bolts on Sigurd’s army.
“We’ll worry about the castle later! Destroy the ballistae for now!”
The cavalier unit followed his order, ignoring the castle and charging towards the ballistae. They destroyed the ballistae all at once, making the perimeter of the castle safe.
“We’ll wait here for our second unit, then attack the castle tomorrow morning.”
There was still plenty of time before sunset, but since they’d been fighting all day, Sigurd decided to give his soldiers time to rest.
When their second unit arrived, Sigurd decided who would be stationed where, then everyone surrounded the castle.
-
Sigurd awoke in the middle of the night.
He didn’t know why, but his heart was racing, so he started scanning the area.
He fell asleep in front of the castle, but beyond the sloping fields behind him stretched a large desert.
‘The last time anyone saw Father, he was here, in the Yied Desert.’ He thought, and started walking towards it.
He soon saw a blue light shining about one hundred meters in front of him.
‘What is that?’ He unsheathed his sword, and moved slowly towards the light. When he did so, the light sank beneath him and kept up with his walking pace.
When he stopped, the light stopped. When he walked, the light moved.
‘It’s calling me.’ He realized, and sheathed his sword. He trudged through the desert, following the light.
-
Roughly two hours later, the light finally stopped moving.
“Is this where you wanted to bring me to?” Sigurd asked, and stepped out of the light.
It grew to the size of a person’s face, then floated into the sky, before an image of his father’s face appeared within it.
“Father!” Sigurd called out.
The light grew and grew, turning a bluish-white color, until it took on the entire form of his father.
‘It’s Father’s ghost!’ Sigurd realized. “Oh Father, what happened to you is such a shame…”
“You finally made it, Sigurd!” The voice was unquestionably that of his father’s, but Sigurd didn’t hear it through his ears, rather, it echoed in his head. “I was murdered by Lombard.”
“I knew it!”
“At the party on the night of my death, Lombard put an anesthetic in our wine. Once Prince Kurt, Duke Ring, and I couldn’t move, three of his men came into the tent and carried us out into the desert. They murdered Prince Kurt at the bottom of a sand dune, then carried Duke Ring and I further away, and buried us alive.”
“How horrible…!”
“You must avenge me, Sigurd.”
“I will kill Lombard. I swear it.”
“Please use this to do it.” The ghost extended his arms and handed a sword over to Sigurd.
“This is…”
“Tyrfing, the Holy Sword that has been passed down through our House Chalphy.”
Sigurd took the sword and said, “I will avenge you and restore your honor. Without fail.”
“You will not be able to do that.”
“I won’t? Why not?”
His father did not answer, instead looking at him with eyes full of pain.
“Why not? Please, Father, please! At least give me a hint!”
“You must take your son…” Byron started to speak, but he winced, cutting his words short.
“Father!? What’s wrong!?”
“...to Isaach…” He managed to gasp before his face became more and more contorted with pain.
“Seliph? I need to take him to Isaach?”
His father said nothing more. The bluish-white light began to darken, until it finally vanished completely. All that was left was Sigurd and Tyrfing.

Their Sealed Pasts
Short Story #5 of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - The Last of the Earth Dragon Tribe
Section 2
Deirdre was not a virgin.
But this fact did not change his feelings for her, rather, it made them burn all the brighter.
Every night, as he touched her, he felt pangs of jealousy.
'Someone else did as he pleased with this beautiful body before me.'
Not wanting to lose to this unknown man brought him to love her all the more passionately.
Nothing satisfied him more than her moans of pleasure, but at the same time, they also made him suffer.
'Tell me, did you moan just like this for him?'
But he couldn't ask her, because she could not remember anything before him.
'I can't go on like this.' He thought. 'I've been so fixated on her past, that it's become an obstacle to everything I am planning to do. I cannot stand to think about it any longer.'
ー
Arvis sat down at his place at the table.
"Deirdre, I've been thinking. About why you appeared before me after you lost your memory. And I've concluded that it was destiny. It was your destiny to lose your memory and be mine. So I don't want you to try to remember your past anymore. Only for you to make more memories with me."
Tears welled up in Deirdre's eyes.
"What happened? Did I say something wrong?"
"No, not at all! Actually, I'm very happy!" She wiped away her tears with a handkerchief.
"This whole time, I've thought of myself as only half a person. As a woman that can't possibly be good enough for you. During the day, when you go to the palace, I try as hard as I can to regain my memories. But I can't, no matter what I do. When you come home, I always blame myself. Today was the same. I'm a terrible, awful woman…" Her last words trailed off into a wail.
"You don't have to feel like that anymore, Deirdre. What I’m saying is, we are the most perfect couple in all the world. Today, I visited the king. I told him that I found the woman that I want to spend the rest of my life with. And then he said he wants to give us his blessing."
"You… You did…?"
"He was overjoyed, and asked me to bring you to the palace tomorrow."
"Am I really the one? A woman like me…?"
"Don’t say that. You are the most amazing woman I have ever met." He said with all the conviction he could muster. Then, he repeated to himself over and over that he couldn't obsess over her past anymore, and sealed those thoughts deep within his heart.
That night, he made love to her without a single worry in his heart for the first time.
All unease disappeared from her face as well.
'She's even more beautiful now than ever before.' He thought.
When they were finished, Deirdre said, "I don't know why, but that was the first time our love has ever felt quite like that."
He stroked her soft, smooth back. "I felt the same way. I love you, Deirdre."
"I love you too, Arvis. I love you so much."
They fell asleep in each other's arms, and slept soundly until morning.
ー
King Azmur sat on the throne for the first time in a long time.
Arvis walked up to him with his fiancée, and they both bowed.
"It's good to see you. Please, raise your heads."
Deirdre bowed further, dropping down on one knee, before doing so.
The king’s expression changed suddenly.
"Is something the matter, Your Majesty?" Arvis asked.
"It's nothing." He said, then looked closely at Deirdre's face once more. “Young lady, I understand that you have lost your memory?”
“Yes, I have.”
“So you don’t remember anything about your parents?”
“Unfortunately, no.”
“I may be wrong, but… Your face reminds me of someone. Please take off your circlet, and show me your forehead.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.” She looked puzzled, but raised her arms to take off her circlet.
She always wore it. Even Arvis had yet to see her without it on.
“Is this okay?”
On her forehead was a white, wave-shaped mark.
“I knew it.”
“What is it?” Arvis asked, worry dripping in his voice.
“That mark on her forehead is the Holy Mark passed down through Grannvale’s royal family. Deirdre, was it? There is no doubt in my mind that you are my son Kurt’s orphan.”
“What are you saying? That my fiancée is Prince Kurt’s daughter…?
“Yes, I am. I do not know when or with whom he may have fathered her, but I know that she is his daughter. This is cause for celebration! I worried that Grannvale’s royal bloodline had died out, but the gods have not abandoned the Crusaders after all. Duke Arvis, Deirdre, I give you my blessing to marry as soon as possible and produce an heir. Duke Arvis, I will grant you the status of regent, and you will run the kingdom’s government until your successor has grown. What a joyous occasion this is! We must announce the news throughout the country straight away!”
It was Arvis’ final chance to question who she was. He started to wonder how she could be Prince Kurt’s daughter...
But he had already sealed his heart off from thinking about her past.
All he could think about was the idea that he was next in line to inherit the Grannvalian throne.
‘Everything is going according to plan.’
War continued to ravage the continent, yet Grannvale remained almost completely unaffected by it, throwing a wedding so extravagant it would be the major news story long after it happened.
ー
Sigurd’s army came out of hiding in Silesse, and killed Lombard.
Now, they were gaining momentum, and traveling across the Yied Desert towards Grannvale.
But Arvis had a plan in place for every possibility.
He ordered Friege’s army, led by Reptor, and Velthomer’s army, led by General Aida, to face Sigurd's army head-on. However, once the fighting started, Velthomer’s mages rained Meteor spells down on Friege’s Army.
Friege’s Army panicked, and Reptor was killed by Sigurd, who had obtained his Holy Weapon, the Holy Sword Tyrfing.
General Aida opened the gate to Velthomer Castle, and greeted Sigurd.
“Duke Arvis knows that you are innocent, Lord Sigurd. He says everything that transpired was all the work of Duke Reptor and Duke Lombard. They were simply too powerful for Duke Arvis to do anything about them until now.”
“Really? Then that means my father’s name will be cleared as well?” He asked her with a cold expression on his face.
“Yes, Duke Arvis is waiting with His Majesty for you in Balhalla. The Roten Ritter will be there to greet you. The entire country will celebrate your triumphant return.”
Sigurd announced to his army that the war was over, and disbanded them.
Only two hundred of his soldiers went to Balhalla, and just a single unit went with him to the palace.
What the world would soon call “The Battle of Balhalla” would not be a battle at all. It would be a massacre.
Arvis himself stood before Sigurd, and declared him a traitor. Then, Arvis pulled Deirdre alongside him. “Take a good look at him! This is the man who killed your father! Sigurd, son of Duke Byron! He will now be executed for his crimes!”
Then, Sigurd screamed, “Deirdre!”
She looked at him in complete surprise.
“Of course! I know everything now, Deirdre! It was him!”
“You… You know me...?”
Arvis cut off her next question, and ushered her to the back of the Rotten Ritter. “Take my wife back to the palace.”
The two soldiers each took one of her hands.
“Wait, milord! ...Just give me one moment with him…”
But the soldiers began to pull her along, nearly dragging her across the ground.
“Deirdre!!”
“All units! Kill the traitor and his soldiers!”
It was over in an instant.
The only traitor who survived was a woman, who lost her right arm and fell unconscious in critical condition.
Those who had traveled to Balhalla, but did not go to the castle, all fled without even trying to put up a fight.
‘So it was him. He is the man who loved her before me.’ Arvis thought to himself as he looked down at Sigurd’s charred remains. ‘But it is no matter. The past is in the past, and now he is dead. The only problem is whether or not she regained her memories when he called out to her.’
He didn’t want her to remember.
He wanted her to be his, and his alone.
Once he confirmed that the battle was over, he returned to the palace.
His wife was alone in her room, sitting in a chair in the corner, lost in thought.
When she realized that Arvis had entered the room, she pleaded, “Tell me! Did he know something about my past!?”
‘Thank the gods. Her memories did not return.’ He sighed and answered, “I do not know. But he was always a liar. Surely, he thought that by pretending to know you, I would spare his life.”
“I see. If that’s the case, then I understand, but…”
“You have no reason to worry. As I’ve always said to you, we gain nothing by obsessing over the past. Your only memories are the ones you have with me. Those as my perfect bride.” He took her hand, pulled her up from the chair, and hugged her tenderly.
“Hold me tighter. I’m so scared of what my past might have been. Even one thought about it chills me to the bone.”
“It’s alright. I’m here.”
They held each other for a long, long time.
A few days later, he learned that she was pregnant.

The rebellion was over.
And King Azmur was on his death bed.
To build his new empire, Arvis had to work long, hard days, and traveled frequently.
While subjugating Leonster to the east, he was informed that his wife had given birth to twins, a boy and a girl. All three of them were doing well.
He named the boy Julius, and the girl Julia.
With their king and inheritor to holy blood, Quan, gone, Leonster did not put up much of a fight. Seeing that there was still much to be done, he entrusted Leonster to Reptor’s son, Bloom, and returned home.
He promised Bloom the title of King of Leonster. Bloom vowed his absolute loyalty with glee.
It was Arvis’ first time coming home in two months.
He rushed up to Deirdre’s room, and found her breastfeeding one of the babies.
The sight of her husband’s return put a smile on her face, but made Arvis gasp in response.
Deirdre no longer had the face of a young woman, but of a mother. And it reminded him exactly of his mother’s.
‘Mother!’ He couldn’t bring himself to say the word, screaming it inside of his heart instead.
And it became the key that unlocked the seal upon his heart.
Every one of his forgotten memories came flooding back to him.
His father’s suicide. His mother, Cigyun, and Prince Kurt’s behavior at the funeral. And his mother’s disappearance.
As a child who'd become the Duke of Velthomer at such a young age, he had to be strong to protect his title. However, he was still just a boy who'd lost his mother and been left alone, so at first, he’d cried time and time again.
With all the pieces in place, he put the truth together.
His wife was the child born between his mother and Prince Kurt.
He'd fallen in love with her at first sight because his unconscious saw his mother's image in her.
'I married my sister from a different father, and even had children with her.'
For any normal person, it would be a shameful secret, and end there.
‘But I inherited Loptous’ blood from my mother. So children born between my sister and me would likely have much thicker Loptrian blood than us. What will this mean for them?'
And the last thing he remembered were Manfroy’s words. “She is waiting for you.”
‘What are you planning, Manfroy!?’
“What’s wrong, milord?” Deirdre saw that her husband was still standing in the doorway, and called out to him. Then, she looked down at their child. “Look, Julius, it’s your father!”
Her voice dragged him to their side.
“Aw, look at our son. He looks just like you!”
The boy seemed to be like any other innocent infant, eyes closed, peacefully sucking his mother’s breast.
Except for the tiny red dot on his forehead.
