“Dunno. Out.” Charles strides over to lean next to him. “What's that museum you were going on about? Or we haven't scared the daylights out of ghost hunters in ages, that’s always a laugh. Or gone sightseeing, I've always wondered if we'd be able to mirror hop to the reflecting pool at the Taj Mahal.” He nudges Edwin’s leg with his foot. “Come on, Edwin. The night is young and so are we.”

Since my last fic rec post got a great response and I've read some excellent fic in the meantime, here is a new list with more recs!

The Case of Richard Rowland by RB (BlueflowersandWings)

Charles' dad hires the Dead Boy Detectives to solve his murder. It's. Traumatic. The writing and characterisation are excellent and heartbreaking and the case is intriguing. I have many theories! Cw for domestic abuse, child abuse and homophobia.

we all have a hunger (series) by Anonymous

I couldn't choose! They're both so good! The first is from Crystal's PoV as she tries to figure out what happened to Niko. It also features some wonderful Crystal & Edwin bonding, an absolutely gut-wrenching speech from the latter and The Sandman cameos. The second in the series is an Edwin-centric (so angsty!) case fic featuring Accidental Child Acquisition, greek gods, the Cat King and a happy ending. Superlative writing in both.

Terrible, Horrible, No Good and Very Bad by hibye

Feelings realisation as Charles pines for Edwin and tries not to show it because he has to be sure he's in love. Terrific, very funny writing and Charles is a precious himbo. Excellent payoff too.

Oh, Lonely Bones, Have You Forgotten? by DontOffendTheBees

Charles and Edwin investigate a mystery at St Hilarion's and discover a gut-wrenching secret. Compelling and brilliantly written.

Idiots in Love meets Friends with Benefits and Misunderstandings. Edwin breaking his own heart for no reason is very accurate and Charles gets a cool queer mentor.

College AU! Everyone's alive and Charles and Edwin have been besties since middle school. This is another Oblivious!Charles fic; he's like a well-meaning golden retriever trampling Monty in his clueless wake. Also, the gang perform a seance and Edwin is a ghost-sceptic, which is hilarious.

Charles finds out that Edwin's body was never found and will not let that stand. Has a kind of gothic romanticism I really love and a nice in-universe explanation for the "Charles and Edwin can only feel each other" trope.

The author has written lots of other great fic, including a very cute librarian!Edwin and single dad!Charles human AU with bonus Crystal/Niko.

A Form of Genius by Neous (Greyality)

Charles shows off for Edwin. Crystal Suffers. Idk, it's just cute.

the taste in your mouth by greenaerie

When Esther hurts Charles, Edwin decides to take up the Cat King on his original offer. Interesting exploration of dubious consent, shame and guilt. The author is fairly sympathetic to the Cat King, while also exploring Edwin's complicated feelings, including the impact of his upbringing, general repression and, yes, coercion on his first time. It's not exactly explicit, but take care if those are tough themes for you!

The Manuscript of Real People by paraph

Slow burn Boarding School AU where they're both alive and it's also the 70s. And they were roommates! I have been longing for a fic like this. All the jock/nerd romance tropes, complicated by discussions of bullying and Charles' (perceived) proximity to Edwin's bullies. Edwin is an orphaned scholarship student, so it's also a kind of role reversal and touches on themes of class and poverty. Minor cw for sexual harassment as the Cat King/Thomas is also there (sorry catwin fans).

When We Walk Together We Tend to Walk Alone by UneducatedAuthor

Charles meets Death and gets to say goodbye to his mum. A sweet concept and it's nice to see Death of the Endless getting some love!

Marriage is a Payne by Ace_of_Turtles

Arranged Marriage and Omegaverse AU featuring the boys agreeing to get married to spite/escape their awful parents. Not explicit and fairly light on the a/b/o details, in case that's a squick for anyone.

Charles decides the answer to the handjob question requires a practical demonstration. Very funny and well written and the title is excellent. All the kudos.

Try, Try Again by Asidian

Alterative ending to episode four. After the Night Nurse, Edwin makes a second attempt to comfort Charles. Heartwarming and sad.

The Risk and Rewards of Communication by Opossum_Subatomic

Another alternative ending to episode four featuring Edwin coming clean about the Cat King. So well written. I feel like this is going to be a fandom classic.

Charles decides to check in on his mum. Some very sweet established relationship fluff followed by discussions of domestic abuse and family feels. The ending opened up some amazing possibilities for future fics! Highly recommended.

The same author has also written the ghost of the past that you live in, which is an excellent in-depth exploration of Charles' bisexual awakening and trauma-related repression.

Anyway, I'm going to try to make this a regular thing, so please send me more recs!

A: “After I died, I made that copper’s life a living hell. He deserved it, for all the times he raided my bar. Made sure he was proper haunted until he died a decade or two ago.” She winked and Charles, despite her being forty years older than him and a lesbian, blushes. (I cheated a bit with this one, but I can't help it)

M: Most of the time, their lives aren’t that different from what Charles’s was, and he feels silly, like he did in the museum.

E: Even in the middle of his own crisis, Charles has to smile.

D: “Do you mind me asking, where are you going?”

this is probably obvious, but after the insects have laid their claim (aka the shared grave fic aka the Hozier fic to me and quill): the scene that sparked the whole thing was the vision of Charles finding Edwin's remains and laying them to rest in his own grave, and carving their names into his headstone. that image grabbed me by the kishkes and forced me to write like 10k words to hold up that one specific scene

💖 What is your favorite moment in this WIP?

I've already said one in a previous ask, but another good moment is this (spoilers for the next chapter of dead boys night):

“I suppose,” Edwin continues, “I’m feeling very sorry for this man who was never loved the way he wanted.” He squeezes Charles’s fingers and smiles over at him. “And I’m feeling quite lucky that I am.”

Charles’s heart lurches. “Even if I—”

“Charles,” Edwin says firmly, turning fully to him and putting his free hand on Charles’s shoulder. “Please understand that I want for nothing. Our friendship is more precious to me than anything else.”

Charles absolutely has to hug him, chest too full for words.

❌ What would your WIP get cancelled on Twitter for?

see i included this question, but the problem is i don't use twitter anymore. but i can think of some random reasons. use of the word queer, for one. age gap discourse for sure. manipulation by ghosts of the living who can't see them. breaking and entering, maybe? do people care about that?

how did you know i have a kink for the word gentle? it's in my new libraryverse fic not once but TWICE, so you get a bonus line:

Gentle fingers touch his chin, raising his head to look into clear green eyes.

Any snarky response Charles might have made is lost when Edwin starts trailing gentle fingers across his back. Charles shivers, mouth falling open with a gasp, as Edwin traces the marred, raised skin of his scars with aching tenderness.

mmmmm minor spoilers, but i woke up in the middle of the night, either last night or two nights ago, with an idea that i just HAD to write down. basically charles is Figuring Out Some Shit and these older ghosts find him and talk him through it. im a sucker for queer elders guiding baby queers through thick and thin

(also i was so excited about answering that I DIDN'T WRITE MORE AT FIRST, WHICH IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS GAME. I AM NOT POSTING UNTIL I HAVE DONE SO.)

For the ask game: my fourth favorite public building to visit?

oooooo that's a toughie because I think it's genuinely the first scene where Edwin is besotted with Charles during storytime. basically the idea of Edwin being amazing with kids and also the idea of dad!Charles got me good.

but Jenna, you ask, why did you need to write a ten chapter fic and then follow it up with like a dozen oneshots?

Hi! for that scene ask game - a certain step towards falling in love <3

oooooo that's a good question. it's probably the scene near the beginning where Edwin is watching Charles dance. especially the line "...but you can forgive him for forgetting when the air is humid and close and the lights are dim and red and Charles is moving his hips like that."

this fic was actually a bit of a struggle for me to write, but I got stuck on the idea of Charles loving salsa dancing and forcing Edwin to like it too, if only when they're dancing together
