it might be obvious, but this is for my raven cycle AU! i published the first chapter for painland week, and it kind of stuck in my brain.

the vibes: charles is a ghost (loosely noah style, but he knows he's a ghost), crystal is a medium (blue style, but she actually has powers), and edwin is a student at a private boarding school (gansey style, but... you know what, just gansey style. autistic charisma boys rise up). edwin is interested in the supernatural and meets crystal and charles, who both live at the equivalent of 300 fox way, and then they get into shenanigans together while edwin and charles fall in love. oh, and edwin is charles's true love. and also he's going to die within the year. fun!

here's an excerpt from chapter 2, enjoy!

There’s a boy in the waiting room, still in his school uniform. Charles has seen that uniform so much he thought he was immune to the way it looks, but his eyes snag on the bare forearms and the slightly exposed collarbone above the single undone shirt button before making their way to his face. 

“Crystal, he’s cute,” he says. 

Crystal has gotten very good at ignoring Charles in front of mixed company, and just asks, “Hey, are you Edwin?”

“Yes,” the boy responds, and his voice is as nice as the rest of him. “I’m here for a reading, if you please.” His hands fiddle with the strap of his shoulder bag.

“Pretty, posh, and he has nice hands?” Charles whispers loudly, grinning at Crystal. “If this guy’s an arsehole, there is no justice in this world.”

“Okay, come on back,” Crystal says to Edwin, and she waits until he’s in front of her to give Charles a look that clearly says to stop before he makes her laugh, so he does. 

“What can I do for you?” Crystal asks when they’ve sat down. Charles perches next to her on the small table, twisting around to make sure he can keep an eye on the boy. 

For Crystal’s safety, of course. Even someone with nice hands might try to strangle you with them, or something.

Charles forces his mind off that train of thought and his gaze off Edwin’s hands. Then he notices Edwin’s eyes, a stormy green color, and gets lost all over again until the other boy speaks.

“Tarot reading, if you please. I have tried to question my own cards, but I’m not quite skilled enough to make sense of what they’re telling me this time.”

“Ooh, a professional,” Charles comments, liking this bloke more and more. “Better start off with something specific so he knows you’re legit.”

Crystal nods in the way she does when she’s trying to answer Charles as well as the client, and pulls out her cards to hand to Edwin. As he shuffles, she asks, “Do you have a question in mind?” At his nod, she continues, “Make sure to hold it in your mind as you shuffle. You can tell me what it is or not, it doesn’t matter. Is a three card draw good? That’ll give us a good place to start.”

“Just one thing,” the boy says before he pulls the cards. “When I called to make this appointment, I was given to understand this would be a…private meeting.” His eyes lock on Charles on the word private.

His eyes are really gorgeous, Charles muses, then the full meaning of his statement sinks in and Charles’s nonexistent stomach drops out of his arse. 

“You can see me?” Charles asks breathlessly.

Edwin nods like that should be obvious.

Charles' dad hires the Dead Boy Detectives to solve his murder. It's. Traumatic. The writing and characterisation are excellent and heartbreaking and the case is intriguing. I have many theories! Cw for domestic abuse, child abuse and homophobia.

I couldn't choose! They're both so good! The first is from Crystal's PoV as she tries to figure out what happened to Niko. It also features some wonderful Crystal & Edwin bonding, an absolutely gut-wrenching speech from the latter and The Sandman cameos. The second in the series is an Edwin-centric (so angsty!) case fic featuring Accidental Child Acquisition, greek gods, the Cat King and a happy ending. Superlative writing in both.

Terrible, Horrible, No Good and Very Bad by hibye

Feelings realisation as Charles pines for Edwin and tries not to show it because he has to be sure he's in love. Terrific, very funny writing and Charles is a precious himbo. Excellent payoff too.

Charles and Edwin investigate a mystery at St Hilarion's and discover a gut-wrenching secret. Compelling and brilliantly written.

Idiots in Love meets Friends with Benefits and Misunderstandings. Edwin breaking his own heart for no reason is very accurate and Charles gets a cool queer mentor.

College AU! Everyone's alive and Charles and Edwin have been besties since middle school. This is another Oblivious!Charles fic; he's like a well-meaning golden retriever trampling Monty in his clueless wake. Also, the gang perform a seance and Edwin is a ghost-sceptic, which is hilarious.

Charles finds out that Edwin's body was never found and will not let that stand. Has a kind of gothic romanticism I really love and a nice in-universe explanation for the "Charles and Edwin can only feel each other" trope.

The author has written lots of other great fic, including a very cute librarian!Edwin and single dad!Charles human AU with bonus Crystal/Niko.

Charles shows off for Edwin. Crystal Suffers. Idk, it's just cute.

the taste in your mouth by greenaerie

When Esther hurts Charles, Edwin decides to take up the Cat King on his original offer. Interesting exploration of dubious consent, shame and guilt. The author is fairly sympathetic to the Cat King, while also exploring Edwin's complicated feelings, including the impact of his upbringing, general repression and, yes, coercion on his first time. It's not exactly explicit, but take care if those are tough themes for you!

The Manuscript of Real People by paraph

Slow burn Boarding School AU where they're both alive and it's also the 70s. And they were roommates! I have been longing for a fic like this. All the jock/nerd romance tropes, complicated by discussions of bullying and Charles' (perceived) proximity to Edwin's bullies. Edwin is an orphaned scholarship student, so it's also a kind of role reversal and touches on themes of class and poverty. Minor cw for sexual harassment as the Cat King/Thomas is also there (sorry catwin fans).

When We Walk Together We Tend to Walk Alone by UneducatedAuthor

Charles meets Death and gets to say goodbye to his mum. A sweet concept and it's nice to see Death of the Endless getting some love!

Arranged Marriage and Omegaverse AU featuring the boys agreeing to get married to spite/escape their awful parents. Not explicit and fairly light on the a/b/o details, in case that's a squick for anyone.

Alterative ending to episode four. After the Night Nurse, Edwin makes a second attempt to comfort Charles. Heartwarming and sad.

The Risk and Rewards of Communication by Opossum_Subatomic

Another alternative ending to episode four featuring Edwin coming clean about the Cat King. So well written. I feel like this is going to be a fandom classic.

Charles decides to check in on his mum. Some very sweet established relationship fluff followed by discussions of domestic abuse and family feels. The ending opened up some amazing possibilities for future fics! Highly recommended.

The same author has also written the ghost of the past that you live in, which is an excellent in-depth exploration of Charles' bisexual awakening and trauma-related repression.

Anyway, I'm going to try to make this a regular thing, so please send me more recs!

"POV Charles Rowland (DCU)" if you only look at the DBD fics, followed closely by "Kissing". Which is cute, but also I'm pretty sure Kissing features in all my fics... I'm gonna investigate this.

Hahaha alright. Here's a bit of Ricky's POV from I'll let you go if you kiss me goodbye. I don't know if I'll end up writing a whole fic for it, but I've got this:

Ricky's never had a specific type. He goes for a little bit of everything, girls, boys, neither or both, nerds and punks and stoners and actors. But there’s always been something incredibly endearing about someone who looks like their dream life is made of about 90% reading. Ricky doesn’t know why, maybe it’s an ego thing, maybe he likes to idea that he could convince them to have a good time, to look at him instead of the pages of their books, but he just finds them interesting and cool, maybe even more so because they refuse to be impressed by the things everybody else finds cool, because they are so determined to decide what they like for themselves. And so when he sees the guy—the boy, really, he can’t possibly be older than Ricky—standing there, with his knickerbockers and knee-high wool socks and leather brogues, Ricky’s first thought is Bloody hell, he’s fit.

#edwin absolutely takes notes#im of the opinion that his notebook is enchanted to be endless#bc otherwise why would his current notebook have the map of hell#except if he makes sure to keep it with him at all times so he can remember how to get out but thats an awful reason so no thanks#he also clearly has an amazing memory. i think ghosts wouldnt forget things so easily#bc thats kind of the whole thing about being a ghost? remembering the past making you stuck#but yes they do name all their adventures whether it's for a case or not#and edwin writes everything down bc you never know when it might be useful

so if charles and edwin name all their cases ("the case of the shrieking doll", etc) then things like "the great chewing gum debacle of '06" aren't even real cases it's just things they did or happened to them that they decided to name and remember to the end of time.

that's just so funny to me like imagine they get stuck in a haunted house and it's not part of a case so they call it "the haunted manor escape of '96" which of course is different to "the case of the haunted manor."

how do they remember all of these?? does edwin keep notes on all their little adventures even if it's not officially a case ??

HEY HEY HEY thanks for the ask!! I gave an initial answer here, but since you're one of three (3!) asks i got about this, i wanted to share a bit of an excerpt, since I can't help myself. (and maybe if i post it publicly that will make me work on it again lol)

the fic was initially born out of the idea that it SUCKS that we don't see charles's reaction to edwin being in pain in episode 8, so that's where we begin. enjoy your angsty excerpt!

Charles must still be in Hell. 

It’s a completely plausible reason for being locked in an iron collar listening to his best mate screaming. They didn’t actually make it out, their freedom was just another trick, and now he’s experiencing his own personal torment, since nothing could be worse than listening to Edwin get tortured and not be able to help.

Edwin’s pain tolerance has always been absurdly high, and now Charles knows exactly why. So he can’t even begin to imagine what’s making Edwin sound like that. 

It’s not Hell, though, but he is being punished for his stupidity. Too caught up in the pain of Crystal leaving, he hadn’t protected Edwin like he was supposed to, and now they’re both paying the price. 

Charles doesn’t have his bag, so he can’t lockpick his way out, and there’s no other way he can think of. If their places were swapped, Edwin would come up with a plan, but Charles isn’t and has never been the brains of the operation, and anyway he can’t think of anything beyond the sound of Edwin screaming. 

It sets his teeth on edge and replaces his insides with knives. In between the screaming, Edwin is babbling, begging for mercy, for it to stop. He doesn’t know if Edwin is talking to the witch or something in his head, but Charles wants to beat whatever it is with his cricket bat, and he can’t.

This fic has everything: excellent writing, developing relationship, rituals, first time, Beltane, a hot priest. This is already a fandom classic and now I've finally read it, I can confirm it's very good! Read the rest of the series too!

The stranger the better by ghostinthelibrary

Everyone's alive and basically the supernatural version of the Men in Black. I love the whole series, but this installment has the boys' first meeting, Edwin insisting he doesn't need a new partner, office gossip and an intriguing case. The prequel also has palasaki and background catwin! Anyway, I'm obsessed with this AU.

Partridge in a Pear Tree by Vamillepudding

Cinderella AU! Charles is basically a Disney Princess and Edwin is Secretly The Prince, it's wonderful. I also loved the worldbuilding and nods to old school Cinderella lore, like the gift-giving tree. So charming, highly recommended.

Wunderkammer by dear_monday, two_ravens

Edwin and Charles (and later Crystal) are functionally immortal and running a magical museum. This fic has a fantastic sense of place (the Athenaeum is a character in its own right) and an intriguingly gothic horror vibe with its sentient exhibits, doors into other planes and unnerving nonchalance about disappearing staff and guests. I would probably die, but I would absolutely go there.

The pince-nez fic! Charles finds a pair of glasses that show him a person's desires. Then he looks at Edwin. It goes about as well as you'd expect. It was inspired by this wonderful comic by technically-human so check that out too!

Vampire AU! The boys meet while Charles is dying so Vampire!Edwin agrees to turn him. The story is ongoing, but so far it's been focusing on Charles coping with being a fledgling vampire. Compelling.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

I've written for a bunch of fandoms, but these days it's mostly Dead Boy Detectives. in theory i have other fandoms, but none that i'm so feral for at the moment

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

all of them are DBD which is kind of astonishing to me, this fandom never ceases to amaze 1. after the insects have laid their claim 2. like breathing 3. terms of endearment 4. a certain step towards falling in love 5. you can throw a party full of everyone you know

5. Do you respond to comments?

yes, every single one, no matter how old the fic is! i might be a little slow or miss one every so often, but i really try hard to respond to every one i get. comments mean the absolute world to me, so i want to thank everyone who takes time out of their day to tell me they enjoyed my work <3 <3 i also LOVE when fanfic writers respond to me, so i assume other people do, too

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

i am an angst with a happy ending sort of bitch, but probably one of the fics i wrote during the Nothing Much To Do Radio Silence (TM) when we were all losing our minds with no updates. haven't read those in forever, so maybe Something to Do, Someone to Blame? or maybe it isn't cinema that i wrote for Nothing Like the Sun? or maybe Tropes for Keleidotrope?

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

gosh, so many. again, i write mostly happy ending stuff, so it's hard to pick just one. maybe my fourth favorite public building to visit, if i had to pick one that hasn't been mentioned already. though after the insects have laid their claim has a VERY happy and corny ending that i will forever be proud of haha

no, thank goodness

9. Do you write smut?

yeah! i'm new to it, but it's a lot of fun

10. Do you write crossovers?

not usually, but i'll stick characters from one universe into a similar universe because something resonates (like Heartstopper Squared or The Quest of the Maddening Mace), but i don't usually write characters meeting or anything like that.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not that i know of! *fingers crossed*

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

yeah! i have stuff in progress (that we haven't worked on in a while sorry @courfaeriedust) but i've also definitely written collabs that i've published, i think?

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Charles and Edwin from Dead Boy Detectives have such a special place in my heart, and I really hope this hyperfixation doesn't go anywhere, but in terms of pure longevity? Merlin and Arthur from BBC Merlin. I've been reading that shit for a decade. Special shoutout to Alex and Henry from Red, White, and Royal Blue, and Drew and Harrison from Keleidotrope, because I'm still insane about you all too, don't worry.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

THAT IS QUITTER TALK AND I WILL NOT STAND FOR IT. but to give a kind of cutesie answer, i'm not sure i'll ever be done with the libraryverse. there's so much story there, and i keep having ideas for it, so maybe i'll be able to keep playing in it forever. that would be kind of nice.

16. What are your writing strengths?

why are you making me say nice things about myself. why. overall, i think i'm good at dialogue. i actually wrote a whole manuscript in instant messages because i love writing dialogue so much. i'm pretty good at getting into characters' voices, whether they're my own or someone else's, and i find a lot of joy in writing everything from banter to flirting to meaningful conversations (but some of those are easier than others lol)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

action, descriptions, things that aren't dialogue. i also tend to keep my writing kind of short, so i don't always allow for moments to breathe the way they should.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

woooooof the only other language i speak is hebrew (and not amazingly well) so probably not. if i ever got good enough at another language, maybe? but english is my first and by far my strongest language, so I don't think i'd ever be able to express myself well

as far as i remember, Lord of the Rings. (no you will never find it.)
