FairyTale 101: Myths & Legends - Gryla (The Winter Witch)
“Far in the cold regions of Jotunheim, the Frost Giants dwell, their icy hearts as unyielding as the frozen lands they call home.” — Inspired by Norse Mythology The Frost Giants, or Jötnar, are among the most fascinating and fearsome beings in Norse mythology. Representing the chaotic and untamed forces of nature, these colossal beings play a central role in the mythological tales of the Norse…

Note
My personal headcanon is that although there are warriors in Jotunheim, magic is praised more than physical strength is.
second ask:
well, to continue the magic talk.
It'd be something biological that all Jotuns have, but it's more about who can give more use to it. Being royalty one with the best use of it.
This wouldn't mean fighting with your bare hands would be look down upon though, it's just different kind of strengths.
(i like imagining jotunheim would have a positive view on it thats it)

yk I would be willing to put up with a lot in norse mythology adaptations if they would just stop erasing lokis pathetic failgirl swag. shaking writers by the shoulders I cannot stress to you enough how much of a fucking loser this idiot is. Nobody likes them, they're constantly pissing people off by being incapable of shutting the fuck up or controlling their impulses, they're constantly being bullied into doing grunt work for bigger scarier jötnar and the only reason they form any sort of meaningful threat is through the power of nepotism. Literally the only things she has going for her is that she's pretty and has some weird codependent fuckery going on with odin, and even he's sick of her bullshit half the time. More pathetic loki rep pls and thank u

New Ocean Keltoi video just dropped!
I completely agree with Ocean, that worshipping Jötnar like Surtr, and Loki and his kin, is perfectly valid, acceptable, and in the case of Surtr, historically attested (which I'm just now learning!)
I highly recommend everyone go and watch this video, but the key takeaway for me is that Surtr is a massive god of fire and death, but the very lava and ash that destroys the crops and homes of people is the same that fertilizes the ground for new, better growth to come. A volcano destroys everything nearby, but many places have been created from volcanic activity (Iceland, Galapagos, et al.).
Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin, and none display this better than Surtr. Hail Surtr!

So not a pagan but I have an interest in norse culture and I have heard of disir and landvaetir and all that. but never of Rökkr? I'm curious what is that?
Rökkr is the name that neo-pagans have chosen for a sub-group of jötnar among which are Loki, Fenrir, Hel, and Jörmungandr. Some also include Níðhöggr, Surtr, Skaði, and Angrboða among the Rökkr. The concept is quite modern and its name fits pretty loosely, as this sub-group doesn't comprise a specific list of divine beings. There are pagans who identify as practitionners of "Rökkatru", meaning they mainly work with this particular group of jötnar. While I don't consider myself a Rökkatru practionner, I worship them like I do the Æsir and the Vanir.

Guide to the Edda
I am by no means an expert, but I AM a proud literature buff 💪 📢
The Poetic Edda is a collection of Norse myths divided into four parts:
The Prologue: differing from the other parts of the Edda in terms of structure, subject and information, the Prologue relates Norse stories to those of the Graeco-Romans, hoping to make it's reader take it more seriously (the Edda was written down in the time of Christianity entering Iceland, so this isn't too surprising). It's unclear whether the Prologue was a part of the original texts, or if it was added only with the scribing of the Edda itself, in order to relate to a medieval Christian audience by drawing connections to familiar Christian concepts.
The Gylfaginning: the "core" of the Edda. It is our best source of the Creation story, struggles of Gods and events leading to Ragnarok. It is written as a dialogue between King Gylfi of Sweden and three god-like figures. Gylfi disguies himself as a traveller and journeys to visit the Æsir (the Norse Gods). The three god-like figures are three manifestations of Odin, who Gylfi questions on the order of the Norse Pantheon and the formation of the world.
The Skaldskaparmal: the stories in this section of the Edda give mostly background and explanation for references in Old Norse verse. The Skaldskaparmal gives us stories of heroes, dragon slayers and whatnot.
The List of Metres/Hattatal: undoubtedly composed by Snorri Sturluson himself as an attempt to make himself amicable with the Norwegian King, the Hattatal is a work of 102 stanzas that demonstrate poetics metres and devices. It's a pretty obscure section and is often left out of translations.
The Prose Edda serves as a "how to read Norse poetry" guide for medieval scholars. It's more or less just a couple hundred pages of "here's what's up"
Æsir
The Norse Gods are separated into two groups: the Æsir and the Vanir, who are pretty consistently at war with each other until they eventually fuse into just one group, taking on the name "Æsir" to mean all Norse Gods. The Æsir live in Asgard and rarely quarrel over humans or heroes. They don't like being immortal, either.
The Æsir commonly represent war.
Ex) Odin, Thor, Týr, Frigg
Vanir
The Vanir are Gods of fertility, wisdom and prophecy. Their home is Vanaheimr. After the Æsir-Vanir War, they become a subgroup of the Æsir.
Ex) Freya, Freyr, Njord
Other Creatures
Giants/Jötnar
The Jötnar live in contrast to the Gods (sometimes called "Anti-Gods"); Loki is often considered a Jötunn. There are many names for these entities (Trolls, risi, gýgr, tröllkona, þursar). The connotations for Jötnar become less cool and more evil as Christianity enters the picture, and these beings are not necessarily very large, as the name "giant" might have you expect.
Ex) Hrungnir, Fárbauti, Gerðr
Elves
The Edda mentiones Elves mostly in passing. Though their presence is scarce, it is implied that they held a lot of importance in original Scandinavian myths. There are different types of Elves, such as light and dark, and there are place names connected to them.
As in most mythologies including Elves, they are beautiful, dangerous and magical creatures.
Dwarves
Dwarves are pretty negative creatures in the Norse myth. They were the first of all creatures who live in the flesh of the giant Ymir. The Gods, for some reason unbeknownst to us, changed the nature of the Dwarves so that they "assumed the likeness of men" and started dwelling below the ground.
The reason for changing them may have to do with smithing. The Gods were the earliest master smiths, but abandoned forging and left it to the Dwarves.
Valkyries
Odin's gang of Valkryies decide which fallen Norse heroes are allowed into Valhalla (Odin's hall in Asgard, where the most prominent of the Gods are allowed their own halls, such as Freya or Frigg, etc). Valkryies sometimes appear as lovers of heroes or mortals, even as royalty.
Ex) Brynhildr, Sigrún, Göndul
Monsters
From here on out, classification would take me all goddamn day. Besides the aforementioned, you have your serpents, dragons, lindworms, beasts of battle, draugrs, nixies, selkolla, lyngbakr, hafgufa and hamingja.

Thoughts on Loki's bio mother?
Omg. This is a good question.
So, a lot of people headcanon that Loki’s biological mother is non Jötun, (and that Loki is a bastard child) which is why he’s a runt, but I really don’t believe that at all. I believe that Loki is fully Jötun and just turned out to have a deformity which made him much smaller than the average Jötun. Not because he’s actually half Asgardian or half anything else. Though, the headcanon is pretty interesting.
Yeah… I believe his mother was another Jötun.
But I have realized that we only see male Jötnar in the MCU. WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?! Maybe they’re sort of intersex or they can change sexes? Or all the female ones are in hiding for some reason. I’m thinking all the female Jötnar were in hiding and were not allowed to be guards or soldiers, which is why we don’t see them.
I know there’s a lot more clarity about this in the Myths and in the comics, but clearly… the MCU doesn’t follow that. So… UNSERIOUS HEADCANON TIME!
I headcanon that she was another Jötun, of a lower status than Laufey. She was of course very gorgeous (Loki has to get it from someone…), and she was charmed by Laufey one way or another. They wed, and she becomes pregnant. They needed an heir soon because tensions were rising between the realms, and Laufey started doing some crazy shit (like in the opening scene of Thor 1 in Norway).
War continues to break out… it’s definitely an interesting time to be pregnant. The heir will be born soon, and he will be great! They hold onto that hope. But all continues failing for them.
… Okay so the baby is born, and he’s actually tiny af. They have been cursed. That’s a sign of a curse for the Jötnar, anyway. Hmm… how do they cover this up? If this got out to everyone, it would be… very disheartening. They still have a war to win, and this would discourage everyone. A cursed child born during the war that they were losing. This was bad.
Everyone was told that she died in childbirth, and so did the child. What a bummer…
But In reality, she was killed because she was “responsible” for the curse, and the child, who actually survived childbirth, was left out to die. Laufey and everyone else who knew (midwives, probably) needed to get rid of the evidence.
Laufey never remarried, and never tried to create another heir. Fearing another curse but also feeling down because of Jötunheim’s defeat in the war. His nephew or someone else will be the heir, probably..
But when Loki came down to Jötunheim… he recognized that he was his son.
“Your father is a murderer and a thief! He stole what was ours, and left our world in ruins. We have the right to reclaim the Casket”
The thief part was about more than just the Casket.
But, he could not acknowledge that Loki was his son in front of anyone else, because he “died” in childbirth 1000+ years ago. He couldn’t reveal that he was responsible for the cursed runt.
So, we’re left with the idea that Laufey had no idea that Loki was his son. But, deep down inside, he knew. He just couldn’t do anything about it. But he was okay with that, because he could get revenge on Odin now. The child was good for something..
… Oh no, Laufey is assassinated by his own son.
… Oh no, his own son attempts genocide against Jötunheim.
Yeah maybe Jötunheim has been cursed. This is Asgard’s doing!
“Am I cursed?” Perhaps, just not in the way you think you were.
Okay this is just an unserious/lighthearted headcanon I came up with idk maybe it can make a little sense
Thanks for the question this was really fun to think about and maybe I’ll make a more serious post about this if anyone finds it interesting LOL

Thrown - Chapter 44: Birthright
Summary: Loki wrestles with an old insecurity
Word Count: 1,724
Thrown Masterlist Loki Masterlist
Tumblr media
Loki's fingers trailed over your bare thigh then paused to gently squeeze the soft flesh. You wore a lazy smile as Loki lay stretched next to you, until you suddenly winced and gasped. You cried out in pain and flinched away. Startled, Loki sat up quickly, trying to find the source of your distress. He looked down at his hand. It was blue. Your skin where he touched you was burned. "Darling, I-" he looked to your face. It was twisted in fear. You were afraid of him.
Loki woke in his bed. His bed. He was alone. It had been one of the rare nights he didn't stay with you, and for once he was grateful. He shut his eyes and tried to push the dream away. It was hard to forget the fear in your eyes. He glanced out the window. It was early morning. He might as well get up.
While his tea steeped Loki wallowed in his shame. He had never told you what he was. He should have made it known. It felt deceitful. Norns, he had taken you to bed without telling you what he was. You certainly deserved better than that.
Thor came down the stairs and found Loki still at the table, now with a cold cup of tea. They passed their normal morning greetings and Loki watched his brother rifle through their cabinets for breakfast.
"Thor, I need to ask you something." "Yes?" Thor did not look up from the cereal he was pouring. "How did you react, when you found out about my true heritage?" Thor chuckled. "To tell you the truth, I was much more distraught over your recent death." Loki sighed. "Yes, certainly, but aside from that?" Thor looked over at Loki. "Why do you ask?"
Loki looked at Thor and there was only silence. Thor's shoulders slumped. "Oh, Loki." He sighed. "I know." Thor's brow twisted in confusion. "How is it even possible, after all this time?" Loki shrugged. "It simply never came up." Thor shot him a skeptical look. "Perhaps I guided our conversations away from certain topics." Loki muttered and fiddled with his idle tea.
Thor stood pensive for a moment. "Don't worry yourself over it." "I lied to her." Thor scoffed. "You didn't. And besides, are you not the God of Lies? I imagine she is willing to forgive some dishonesty." Loki glowered at the table. "I should have told her what I am." "She knows what you are. It's your lineage she's made some assumptions about." Thor stated firmly as he sat down across from Loki. "To answer your question, it didn't change the way I thought of you. It changed the way I thought of the Jötnar." He took a bite of his breakfast. "Though it did shed some light on a few of your actions." Loki couldn't bring himself to look at his brother. The wasted tea held his attention instead. "I think, perhaps, you should see her this morning. I can do without you for a few hours." Loki's heart wrenched at the thought of facing you with this. However, he recognized he couldn't avoid it. You should have known already. "I think that's wise."
**
As Loki trudged down the road to your home he tried to identify exactly how he was feeling. He knew, deep down beneath everything else, that you would love him regardless. Somehow that made it worse. You wouldn't have the context to understand what he had kept from you. He wouldn't be able to explain how despicable it was, and you would dismiss it like was nothing.
Despite knowing logically that you would still have him, there was still a part of him that feared you wouldn't. He remembered your terror from his dream. A small, ugly voice in his mind said you would be right to fear him. He deserved to lose you. He never deserved to have you in the first place.
He stood on your porch and hesitated for a moment at the door. He took a breath then stepped inside. You startled on the couch, but your surprise quickly gave way to a smile.
"Loki?" You set your coffee down and stood. "What are you doing here? I wasn't expecting to see you until dinner." He kept his distance and avoided your touch. "I needed to speak with you." Worry crossed your face. "Okay." He gestured to the couch and you took your seat. After a moment of deliberation he sat beside you. "I haven't told you everything about myself." "Well, that's a relief. I haven't told you everything about myself either." You attempted a weak smile. Loki shook his head. "This is something important." His voice stalled out. He suddenly wasn't sure where to begin. "I think you should just tell me." You said quietly.
He nodded and pushed forward. "Do you recall, I told you of the time I fell from Asgard, into the abyss?" You nodded. He looked down. "My fall, I didn't- it was... intentional." Your face fell and your hands reached out, grasping him, as if you could catch him now. You dear creature. "It's alright, it's alright." He took your hands as you clung to him. You started to say something but he shook his head. "The reason is what I need to tell you." He found himself looking down at your hands, turning them over in his. "There were many reasons, I suppose. But I had traveled down a sort of spiral into madness. This spiral was triggered, largely, by a revelation about my heritage." He met your eyes. "I am not Asgardian." Your brows were knitted as you processed this. "So... Thor?" "We are not brothers by blood. Odin found me, abandoned as an infant and raised me as his son. I was born on Jötunheim." He swallowed. "I am Jötunn." "Oh." You ruminated on this for a moment. "Okay."
He looked down again. "I should have told you sooner." "Hey, it's fine." You bent in an attempt to meet his line of sight. "It's really okay. I came to terms with having feelings for an alien a long time ago. It's really not much of an adjustment to switch from one alien to another." He looked away. "You don't understand. The Jötnar, they are savage. Enemies of Asgard. The monster in every children's story." You grabbed his face and forced him to look your way. "You are not a monster." "I tried to kill them." He was surprised by the weakness in his voice. "I meant to destroy the entire race. I would have, if Thor hadn't stopped me. Is that not something a monster would do?" He expected to receive your disgust. Possibly your fear or your anger. Instead your face bent in sympathy. "Destroy the enemy of Asgard? It sounds like something an Asgardian would do."
Loki closed his eyes. You settled back against the couch, pulling him with you. "Obviously the stories are wrong, Loki. You bought into the propaganda. I'd expect more from a god of lies." He allowed you to bring his head to rest against yours, against the back of the couch. "Your clemency is too easily granted. This should have ended with you sending me away." "Loki, the first time I saw your face was on television, attempting to subjugate my planet." "All the more reason." "Hm." He rested with you in silence, your fingers stroking his hair.
You eventually ventured a question. "I didn't think Jötuns looked like Asgardians." Loki winced. "They don't. What you see is shape-shifted. This isn't the form I was born to. There was another beat of silence. "Can I see?" This was something he had hoped to avoid, but he certainly couldn't deny you. "You may not look at me the same way." "Don't be ridiculous." He sighed and sat up, facing you. "I did warn you." You straightened and watched him with anticipation.
He closed his eyes and felt his form shift. He didn't hear you respond, and eventually found the courage to look at you, with eyes he knew were now blood red.
You were looking at him with wonder, and reached out to trace a raised line on his cheek. "It's a lovely shade." "It's hideous." He muttered. You pursed your lips. "Loki, I think you might be racist." "If it weren't for my magic," he spoke sadly, the memory of his dream resurfacing, "my touch would burn you with cold." You took his hand and brought it to your lips, placing a kiss to his fingertips with a slight smile. "Then I'm very grateful for your magic." He found the sight of his blue skin against yours unsettling, and shifted back to his usual shape. "How can you be so unfazed by all of this?" "Oh, I'm fazed, for sure. We definitely have a lot to talk about. But like I said, I had already come to terms with the alien thing. I assumed there would be a few surprises."
That sounded reasonable enough, even if part of him still struggled to believe it. He leaned back, and this time you followed him until the both of you were reclined on the couch. He threw an arm around you and sighed. "It is unreasonable to be this tired so early in the day." He looked down at you. "Do you have work to do?" "It can wait. What about you?" "It can wait." He echoed.
You settled in against him. "So, you're only a prince by adoption?" A smirk curled his lip, despite himself. "Actually, I'm the rightful king of Jötunheim." "Oh, that's great news." He heard the smile creep into your voice. "I thought I would have to kill Thor to become a queen." That drew a chuckle from him, and he could sense you were pleased with yourself for it.
He looked up at your ceiling and his mind swam. You had given him a lot to think about. His concentration was pulled away by your fingers toying with a strand of his hair. It drew his focus to you instead. You were still his. He felt a deep gratitude for your reassuring weight against him. There were things that needed to be addressed, without question. Deep-seated beliefs. Ideas of who he was.
They could wait.

Summary: Loki's made a lot of mistakes in his time. He's lied, he's killed, he's betrayed his friends and enemies so many times that he's not even sure what side he's on anymore. When they speak his name, they speak in equal parts distrust and admiration. Loki: god of chaos, advisor to the All-Father, traitor to the Jötnar. But when he finds himself in the impossible position of having the chance to fix things, he's not sure if he's worthy of the chance. If he even has what it takes. He knows one thing for sure, though: he's not letting his father die this time around. ___ In which Loki gets the bad end and gets knocked into yesteryear with the chance to fix things.

Hey what's the deal with Thursatru? Something feels off about it to me...
You can ignore my last ask; I saw you answer someone else who had the same question
Well first for posterity: Thurs (or Tussar) are Jötun, and Jötnar are the wild, untameable forces of nature. But unlike most Jötnar, Thurs are wild to the degree that they are actively and decisively incompatible with human wellbeing.
They represent the most extreme and destructive phenomena of nature, like rockslides and volcanic eruptions—stuff you have no chance of surviving if you get caught in its path. The destructive nature of Thurs is where we get the meaning of the rune Thurisas from.
Folklore has it that Thurs commonly dwell where humans fundamentally cannot. Some are said to live in Jötunheimen national park, up where the mountain peaks are swallowed by the clouds and where nothing grows. They throw rocks down at people passing by.
They also live in the volcanos of Iceland (Muspelheim). Thurs such as Sutur are responsible for the destructive nature of volcanos, spewing fire, ash, and molten rocks, while cracking open the land during an eruption.
My understanding is that it's uncommon for people to venerate the Thurs, but not for any taboo reason. Rather, it's the same reason why we don't worship wild tigers; "worship" is not the kind of relationship that builds any rapport with them. For most people, their relationships with Thurs involve being cautious of their nature and staying out of their way.
This is the way Thurs are understood in folklore. Now, to understand what Thursatru is, and what its deal is, take everything I just said and throw it out the window.
"Thursatru," from what I've gathered, basically characterizes itself as the Satanism of Heathenry, and it only makes sense in relation to specifically the American flavor of Asatru.
Keep in mind not refering to all of Heathenry in America, but to the way Icelandic Ásatrú is interpreted by Americans: The Eddas are treated as scripture, the past is treated as doctrine, Valhalla is treated as the goal to aspire to (awarded to those who live by the "viking values" outlined in the Havamal, or the snake-oil known as the Nine Noble Virtues), and Odin is treated as the Supreme Being and Loki his adversary.
The phrase "Asatru"—meaning "true to the Aesir"—is viewed as almost like an oath of office. You are pledging yourself to the Aesir's "side" in a prophesized cosmic war, fought between the forces of Order (represented by the Aesir, especially Odin) and Chaos (represented by the Jötnar, with figures like Loki, Ymir, and Sutur).
Jötnar basically fulfill the same function in American Asatru that demons and devils do in Christianity. If Satanism is the worship of all that is antithetical to the Christian god and Christianity, then Thursatru is the worship of all that is antithetical to the Aesir and Asatru belief. By being Thursatru, you're choosing to oppose the Aesir, aligning yourself with the forces destined to fight against them during Ragnarok.
And yes, all of it is extremely corny.
None of Heathenry was ever like this, and much of American Asatru is Christianity in viking garb.
Rockslides are dangerous, but not evil. Volcanic eruptions are disastrous, but not evil. The natural processes of the world—processes that are essential for life on Earth—don't always align with our needs as individual organisms. In fact, some of these processes will always be to our detriment if we stand in their way, as is the case volcanic eruptions and rockslides. That is the Thurs. That is who they are and what they represent.
So basically, the thing that's "off" about Thursatru is that it exists as a reaction to the narrative of American Asatru, and actually legitimizes that narrative to the public eye because it conforms to the American Asatru claim that venerating the Thurs fundamentally opposes the Aesir.
It's not true though, and that logic doesn't check when you put Heathenry back into its own paradigm. Saying Thurs-venerating opposes the Aesir is like saying "Exploring volcanos means you fundamentally oppose the existence of human-friendly environments." Like, what.
The only thing that actually makes someone Aesir-opposing, is their stance of opposing the Aesir. Venererating Thurs just makes someone Norse Heathen.
It's shenanigans all the way down.
