I was watching a video abt the scariest genre of science fiction today and it made me think. What if the phantoms in a way, because we know that they were once humans (or at least infected), once already turned into a phantom, they still have their human conciousness, it's just the phantom part of their brain overpowers their human thoughts, and thus they can't control what they do (it's a horrifying thought yes)

Like a scene in the last of us, where a zombie is seen devouring a human, but it's muttering "I don't want to" over and over again.

The person is still in there, but their body aren't their's anymore. Where the mind tries to break free, the body resists.
