i know a lot of sherlock-only blogs follow me and i might get some questions raised from this, but i have always been multifandom and ever since i started this blog 4 years ago i have always made sure i blog for myself and no one else.

(plus i'm still going to be posting hella sherlock because uM SERIES THREE)

I use anything around me, but I usually use mechanical pencil, 2b leads. sometimes watercolors, color inks. and acrylic painting. if it’s digital, I use paint tool sai or fire alpaca.

Graphic tutorial requested by lockedinjohn

A tutorial on how to make slashed text like I did in this graphic:

Do whatever you want with it, I chose to use the skills I learned from this tutorial to make it pretty:

But, you can do whatever you want.

So, now you have your graphic part. Let's start the text part c:

Type out your word(s) you want to have the effect on. Make it big. For these kinds of things I use Georgia font:

(I'm going to be using the phrase "too much heart")

Alright, make sure the color in your foreground palette is the same color as your text. So my foreground color (the top one) is white. Grab your line tool (this) and make a line that touches the edges of your document. It doesn't need to be perfectly where you want it, bc you can move it later. Just make it the general angle you are going for:

Right click on your line shape layer>rasterize layer.

Now you can move it where you want the text to be cut.

it should look something like this now:

Grab your magic wand tool (this) and make sure your line layer is selected in the layer palette. It should be named Shape 1 or something like that. Click on the side of the line where you want the text to remain in tact. In my case, I'll click on the left side of the line where it says 'h' and a piece of the 'e'. it should select everything on that side of the line. After that, click on your text layer and hit the layer mask tool (this). You should now have something like this:

Now, duplicate your text layer. (right click>duplicate layer) and make sure the layer mask is selected. Hit crtl+i on your keyboard to invert it. You should now have this:

Now you can move your duplicated text layer either up or down to your liking. Here's mine:

Duplicate your line layer and move it to where you want the second cut to be:

Duplicate the duplicated text layer again, and move it down to where it lines up with the first cut:

Select the layer mask of the third duplicated text layer, and start erasing the middle part of it. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it should be close. Do the same thing for the second duplicated text layer above the third part. It sounds confusing, but once you start you'll get a hold of it:

Yay! You did it. Now just for some touch ups. Double click on one of the line shape layers yo bring up the layer styles box, and check the box that says "stroke" all the way as the bottom. Click on it to see the options for it, change the color to whatever your line & text color is, and change the width to whatever you want.(I usually set it to 1) Do the same thing for the second line:

Now, if you want, you can throw layer masks on each of the line layers and erase the bottom or the top of the lines, like this:

Now you can add the rest of the text and/or whatever you please and you have your graphic! Here's the finished product, and you can reblog it here:
