Ewan McGregor To Auction Arran Whisky For Charity
The 26-year-old Arran single malt was distilled in 1998
Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is auctioning 150 bottles from his private cask of 26-year-old single malt whisky from Lochranza Distillery for charity.
McGregor has partnered with the distillery to bottle and auction 150 exclusive bottles from his 1998 vintage single cask, which the distillery gifted to him. All proceeds will go to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), a charity that supports children with life-limiting conditions and their families.
Ewan has been involved with CHAS and visited their hospices many times over the years, so He knows the unwavering care that both [hospices] Rachel House and Robin House provide children and their families during their hardest moments. “ He hopes this auction can raise a significant amount to ensure that these wonderful places can continue providing the service they do.”
The auction offers whisky enthusiasts and fans of Ewan a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of whisky history and contribute to a worthy cause. Whisky Auctioneer will auction the limited edition bottles from 27 September to 7 October. The auction is open to bidders globally, and the first 24 bottles have been personally signed by Ewan McGregor.
The first 24 bottles auctioned will be personally signed by McGregor
The rare 26-year-old Arran single malt was matured in an ex-Sherry hogshead cask and is offered at 46% ABV. The expression is one of the oldest whiskies ever produced by the Lochranza Distillery, each bottle features a unique, specially designed label, making each bottle hugely desirable in its own right.
Stewart Bowman, distillery manager of Isle of Arran Distillers, stated: “In 1998, Ewan McGregor joined us at Lochranza Distillery to toast the first cask of Arran single malt, which was the first legal cask to be laid down on Arran for over 150 years. We presented him with his ex-Sherry hogshead that day, and it has matured in our warehouse.

Bowman added: “Like Ewan, we remain close to our roots and are passionate about giving back to the community. We have looked after Ewan’s cask for the last 26 years, and we are delighted to work with him, Whisky Auctioneer, and Leith to raise money for CHAS.”
Creative agency The Leith has partnered with Ewan and his brother Colin McGregor to bring Ewan’s Cut to life, pro-bono. The bottle design and name have been inspired by McGregor’s career, featuring references to his roles in films including Trainspotting and Star Wars, as well as his Long Way Round television series.
Each of the 150 bottle labels is said to read like a mini film script, with no two labels alike. The ‘Ewan’s Cut’ labels were created and written by Rob Petrie (head of design at Leith) and Colin Montgomery (senior copywriter) with support from Beth Lauder (senior account manager).

Joe Wilson, head curator and spirits specialist at Whisky Auctioneer, said: “At Whisky Auctioneer, we take great pride in supporting charitable causes, and we were honoured to be approached to bring Ewan’s Cut to auction. The launch of Isle of Arran Distillers nearly three decades ago was a landmark moment in the whisky industry, ushering in a new era of independent Scottish distilleries. We are proud to play our part in this exciting chapter of their story and look forward to sharing this remarkable whisky with enthusiasts globally.”

As part of their ongoing efforts to support CHAS (Children's Hospices Across Scotland), Ewan McGregor, his brother Colin and Lochranza Distillery created 150 bottles of a unique 26 year-old Arran Single Malt whisky called 'Ewan's Cut' with the first 24 signed by Ewan and during the auction which took place between 27th September and 7th October the whisky raised £135,000 with all proceeds going to CHAS. [caption id="attachment_168557" align="aligncenter" width="620"] (Image: Lochranza Distillery)[/caption] Lochranza Distillery, on the Isle of Arran, gifted the Scottish actor a cask of Arran Single Malt in 1998, marking the first legal cask to be laid down on the island for more than 150 years. The whisky from the ex-sherry hogshead casks was split between 150 bottles and sold off to help raise £135,000 for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) over the last few weeks.A total of 543 bidders from 28 countries placed more than 7000 bids on the exclusive “Ewan’s Cut” to help raise vital funds for children with life-limiting conditions and their families for the charity. Ewan was understandably blown away by the total raised. “What a total! I just want to thank each and every one of our partners for putting the time, effort and work into this endeavour. “CHAS has always been very close to my heart, and I am so proud that we were all able to raise such a sum for them. I know it's the children they help and their families who will benefit a lot from this - so thank you very much to everyone involved and to those that placed generous bids in the auction.” Well done to all involved for helping raise such a great total. Monday 17 June Lochranza to Tarbert 2 nights.
Ian leaves us to catch the bus home. Light winds so Anne and I motored but then sailed. Tarbert is a delightful spot, a natural harbour and heritage village so plenty to explore. The art bus was in town - a first for me. Friendly and comfortable marina - open to the public it seemed. OBD with local scallops followed by a delightful meal the following night at the Sea Bed restaurant/ Hotel - the only place open.

Chateau is the French word for castle, but the word usage has evolved to be more akin to a manor house or country house today.
You could call it a tower house. Which is a type of "simple" castle, essentially. But calling it a "tower house" sounds like less of a power statement than "castle".
A castle, technically speaking, is just a fortified residence(they're also specifically from the medieval period, but whatever). The narrow windows and what looks like crenellations are defensive features. It also looks built a little higher than the surrounding area(moat?), and entry is seemingly restricted through a bridge. It could be an old castle that Quirin is allowed to live in, like he's a renter or something. I doubt it any of this was intentional on the creators part but eh.
Examples of castles that look similar to Varian and Quirin's house:
Crupet castle(11th or 12th century), Lochranza castle(initially 13th or 14th, but most of it is 16th), Stalker castle(14th)
Corona's royal castle is a fantasy castle and is more like a palace than a true defensible castle. Which is fine, because as time went on the "castles" became more of a status symbol than functionally true castles. And Tangled seems more Renaissance inspired than medieval anyway.
Just call it whatever feels right, it's not like Disney kept historical accuracy in mind anyway.
bea, i am at my last brain cell. in old corona, is there like a term for varian's and quirin's house?? like it's not a castle, per say, but it's not a normal house. there's the whole ass lab, varian sleeps in a tower (in a deleted scene)... would it either be a victorian like mansion or a castle-ette????
It's Bex, not Bea. It's Tangled BEA, as in Tangled Before Ever After.
Honestly, I always just call it a house, because houses come in all shapes and sizes, but you might prefer mansion, which is defined as a large, impressive house, or an estate. Possibly even manor, if you want to presume that their dwelling was originally a lord's dwelling, and the rest of the land rented out to those who lived there, but was eventually broken up and sold off to individual buyers.
It's a large, impressive (er, rundown) structure, and they also have farmland nearby, if not outright attached. Honestly, it would be neat to see blueprints. We know Quirin's bedroom is not on the first floor, and Varian is in the tower (the front one, not the tallest), even in the non-deleted version of Be Very Afraid.
It's a pretty big structure.

Waiting for a Bus?
I rather liking this photograph. It came along quite by chance as I was having some food. I especially liked the juxtaposition of the people within the frame. It was taken at Lochranza on the north coast of the Isle of Arran. The ferry terminalto gt back to the mainland is just a short distance away. The couple in the bus shelter did not appear to be waiting for a bus. I think they had just…
