A Day in Chandni Chowk: A Journey Back in Time
July 18, 2024
Today was a day steeped in nostalgia and unexpected delight. After what seemed like an eternity, I ventured back into the bustling heart of Old Delhi—Chandni Chowk. The transformation that greeted me was both astonishing and heartwarming.
The roads, once chaotic and cluttered, now gleamed with a surprising level of cleanliness. The main pedestrian area, devoid of cars, was filled only with the charming rickshaw pullers, giving the place a timeless charm. It felt as if I had stepped back into an era where culture thrived without the blare of modern noise pollution and the suffocation of traffic. The Delhi Government, often criticized, deserves applause for this revival.
My first stop was the serene Gauri Shankar Mandir, followed by the spiritually enriching Shishganj Gurdwara. The air around these places seemed to hum with a peaceful energy.
Wandering further, I indulged in some local delights—samosa chaat from Mirchi Ram and the iconic kulfi faluda from Wah Ji Wah. The flavors danced on my palate, each bite a testament to the culinary heritage of this historical hub. I couldn't resist purchasing some traditional Pehniya from Kawar Mal Ji, adding a sweet note to my journey.
A poignant moment touched my heart when a young girl approached us, asking for tea. My friend quickly offered her tea cup, reminding me of the simple kindnesses that often go unnoticed. She waited patiently for it to cool before savoring it, and we stepped back, giving her space to enjoy her moment of warmth and comfort.
However, not all sights were heartening. A man, begging for an extra bun, was harshly slapped by a policeman. The slap echoed louder than the usual clamor of the streets. It was a stark reminder of the struggles faced by many, contrasting sharply with my own minor discomforts. My back ached, and my legs were sore from walking for hours, but what was my pain compared to those who lack even the basic necessities? This encounter sparked a deep conversation with my friend about gratitude and the constant pursuit of more, often at the cost of appreciating what we already have.
Despite these somber reflections, the essence of Chandni Chowk, its culture, and its heritage remains beautifully intact. As a true Delhite, my heart swelled with pride and joy. If you haven't visited recently, I highly recommend you do so. Park your car at the newly built Omaxe Chowk Mall, or, better yet, take the metro and enjoy the authentic experience of a rickshaw ride. Don't haggle—let the rickshaw wala bless you for your generosity. The heartfelt smile and gratitude you'll receive in return are worth every extra rupee.
This day was a vivid reminder of the vibrant tapestry of life in Chandni Chowk, a place where the past and present intertwine seamlessly.
Cheers to many more adventures. Follow this space for more tales from my life. Until next time, this is Akassh, signing off.
Embrace the charm, the chaos, and the culture of Chandni Chowk. It's a journey worth taking.s

Last weekend, I took a day trip to the beautiful Eskişehir city. Find below how this one-day full of eating went.
Our day started with a delicious breakfast of Çibörek at Seda Çiğ Borek, a local restaurant close to the Eskişehir Train Station. 🍴 It was fried perfectly. The places was covered with photos of Turkish stars taken inside the store. So I guess the place is well-known but we only discovered this place cause it was only 1-min walk away after getting of from the train.
Next, we headed to Abra bar for a refreshing glass of beer with friends. The bar is known for its constantly changing menu, featuring items from all over the world. Recently they got an istallment of a unique wall rug decor. 🍻
Afterwards, we went to the city center and we stopped at the famous Kara Kedi for a traditional glass of "boza." Boza is a sweet, fermented drink made from maize, barley, or wheat, and is a staple in Turkish cuisine. 🍹
We spent the rest of the day wandering around, chatting and causally looking around. As the sky turned blue after sunset, we took a stroll near the Porsuk river and captured the stunning views. The photos speak for themselves! 🌃
Finally, we ended the night at a meyhane (tavern) called Baba Yorgun. The second floor offered a view of the place’s unique vintage decor and the mezze dishes were simply delicious. The music selection was on point and the atmosphere was unforgettable. 🎶
Although we didn't visit many tourist points like the Odunapazari Modern Museum this time, it was a great opportunity to meet with friends and re-visit the city. Have you been to Eskişehir before? Let me know in the comments!

The Case for Slow Travel
In our fast-paced, productivity-obsessed world, the idea of "slow travel" can seem like an oxymoron. However, this mindful approach to exploring new places is gaining popularity for good reason. Rather than rushing through a dizzying list of must-see sights, slow travel is about taking the time to go deeper and connect more authentically with local people, food, culture, and rhythms.
The advantages are many: reduced stress by eliminating the constant hurry, more thoughtful appreciation of your surroundings, lower environmental impact through fewer transportation transitions, and greater insights by truly immersing yourself versus skimming the surface. Stay a week or more in a single neighborhood rental instead of hustling between hotels. Frequent smaller cafes, shops, and markets where you can savor regional life. Strike up conversations, take language classes, or learn about artisan workshops and community events.
With no need to meticulously plan each day, you can simply explore side streets, people-watch on park benches, or linger over long Mediterranean meals. At its core, slow travel celebrates the joy of discovery through being truly present. You'll return not just with photographs, but a curated collection of sights, sounds, tastes and interactions that burrowed into your soul. Why rev through life at breakneck pace when you can choose to really live it?
