I was inspired by @trashiiplant ‘s scugerators au and decided to do my own take on the slugcats as iterators!

To keep our designs separate I’ll tag this as “local scugs au”

Some extra info:

- Survive the Night really looks up to Indulges in Simple Pleasures! That’s why they dress and act kinda similarly

- I modeled my scug iterator designs after their iterator counterparts (if they have them). So my arti design has a similar outfit to my pebbles design, spears matches suns, hunter matches nsh, and rivulet matches moon.

- Nobody knows what the hell Liminal Spaces is, but that is NOT an ancients-created being

- Thousand Sharp Spears was built without speakers, in the ancients’ “shut the fuck up and iterate” era

- Four Universal Vows (Saint) is actually the youngest of the group, and they take sliver of straw’s place.

- The other iterators finding out the youngest managed to solve the Great Problem and fucked right off without sharing the information: WHAT THE FUCK DUDE

- Stalking Prey requested a big stick to hit things with when the ancients were still around. The ancients regretted granting that request until the day the last one died.

A Rain World AU

I'll start off with the basics. Goodbye, Great Problem! Or at least it's not the main focus. And in this AU the iterators are actual Ancient children.

Essentially, with how advanced the Ancients are, they've been using the same method of treating cancer for so long that a type of 'super' cancer has emerged. Now they're trying to find a way to cure that, too. They can treat the symptoms, but not cure it yet. So they start a questionably ethical program. They give people with said cancer the choice to clear all medical fees and get connected partially to a supercomputer and help with the research and testing of new treatments while being kept alive all for free. They would live in a facility specifically for that.

Soon, they decide to open the program up for kids. The parents can choose to give up the kids and get paid a good amount. The kids would have partial amnesia so they don't miss their parents :)))

This was especially appealing to lower class families who couldn't afford treatment for their kid.

And such the first trial began. The kids were put in groups of five to encourage social connections.

It'll be based around some familiar names: (in order of age)

FUCKNT ANTHRO AU TIME !!

I'm gonna make an attempt to redesign all the anthro scugs! It's high time I did anyways. The old ones are eewwww..

As always first off is Survivor!!

I'm redoing all thier stories too. So uh. STORY UNDER CUT!!

Survivor is the second youngest among his siblings, nightcat, hunter and monk.

Hes typically the quiet type, he loves listening to music and can play the piano. They are closest to monk. But also is good friends with the rivulet.

He has a horrible undiagnosed, unnoticed, uncared for chronic pain in his right leg, that he needs a cane for. He just never brought it up so no one knows except him and he thinks its normal pain.

He lives in an apartment with monk since hunter (and nightcat) left him. He is a highschool senior and works at the local 7-11. They have shifts with artificer and have developed a huge one sided crush on her. He aspires to be either an author or journalist in his future.

Quick tidbit about her design, is that as I draw more designs, I slowly make these slugcats less cat-like and just go more and more nuts, with the Splitmind AU being very different. Rivulet isn't even furred, but instead has placoid scales and has a more sharkskin feel to her.

Also, something you'll see with more of the AU is that scugerators will have their left eye black with a pupil colored like the iterator inside the scug. The only time this changes is when the iterator takes temporary control (whether willingly or through force), where both eyes become reflective of the iterator.

Pre - Moon

Before Moon placed her consciousness in the paws of a slugcat, Rivulet was just an aquatic beast that lived in Shoreline, mostly near the seafloor of the ocean and only coming up every so often to sunbathe or hunt if her normal prey was scarce. (Splitmind Rivulet has true gills, so she can live underwater. She also still has lungs, don't worry, evolution didn't screw her over too bad)

Rivulet lived a solitary lifestyle, only coming into contact with one other slugcat in their life, who simply came and went. At some point, she did visit the local iterator before their collapse, and was given the Mark of Communication before going back to the life she usually lived.

After the iterator collapsed, Rivulet started collecting some of the scraps that washed into the sea, such as pearls, bits of metal and wiring, and even a rarefaction cell (and a lot more damaged cells too). Eventually, she saw another slugcat traveling to the iterator, and out of curiosity, she followed them to watch as they brought the lifeless puppet back to life. After the other slugcat left, Rivulet dropped down to listen to Moon's stories, and would even stay in the chamber when the rains came since she could still breathe.

Post - Moon

After several cycles of living with the iterator, Rivulet saw another slugcat enter the chamber. After initially being hostile towards them, Moon wanted to investigate after the slugcat drew a pearl from a pouch and handed it to her before speaking to both of them, despite marks not being two-way communication. The creature explained that it was an iterator inside of the slugcat's mind, and it hoped this could be a convoluted way to ascend themselves by binding their own minds to another, more feral creature. The pearl contained the instructions on how to do such.

Without lingering for much longer to answer any questions, the creature then gave a suggestion that, normally, it would prefer to genetically engineer the perfect host for such a task, but in Moon's condition, it could be less stressful on her fragile systems to use what was on-hand.

After reading the pearl, Moon asked Rivulet if this was something she was okay with: An iterator in her mind. Rivulet agreed, having grown fond of Moon's presence, and wanted the best for her. Moon went ahead with the process, transferring her mind to Rivulet's.

With a newfound consciousness alongside her own, Rivulet originally wanted to try ascending straight away, but Moon encouraged her to spend some time exploring and showing her things she'd never seen before. Rivulet began doing just that, and Moon offered insight into things that Rivulet didn't understand. The two meshed perfectly, and in the end, the choice Rivulet made was one she never regretted.

Rivulet also met some of the other scugerators on her travels, namely, a feisty and explosive slugcat that had the same telltale eye, but refused to open up on who or why. The slugcat, Artificer, had two missions: Kill the scavenger cheiftain, and then ascend. Rivulet wanted to help, at least with the ascension, and accompanied Artificer on parts of her journey until finally taking her to the new place the scavengers had set up, Bitter Aerie in the remnants of Moon's structure.

After Artificer had done what she wanted, Rivulet took her to meet echo after echo, though both the echoes and Moon told Rivulet that something was wrong with Artificer, as a carnal desire bound her to this world. Despite this, Rivulet still guided Artificer through the world until they'd reached Subterranean, where the guardians (obviously) attempted to attack Artificer. With Rivulet's speed and a bit of trickery, she was able to sneak Artificer past them and eventually, to the void sea.

Riv watched Artificer go, but shortly after could see the golden shimmers in the water and almost saw the red slugcat being fragmented. Confused and worried, especially after seeing what looked like the slugcat trying to claw her way back to the surface, Rivulet dove in to save her. Despite the pain of the void fluid starting to dissolve her body, Rivulet managed to grab Artificer and pull them both out before either could echo/ascend.

After this, Artificer said she was going to 'make things right', and after the two sheltered together, disappeared into the world. In attempts to find her lost friend, Rivulet found a trio of slugcats that didn't have the telltale eye and instead, seemed like just that: Slugcats. As she talked to them and got to know the three, a pair of siblings and the third being like an adoptive one, she became friends with them as well and tries to visit them as often as she can, since she still roams the world looking for Artificer.

"a physically enhanced slugcat, bearing insect-like augmentations, once belonging to an iterator simply known as "Mother" from a now extinct local group that researched artificial Ascension."

HI HELLO UHHH I ASKED TWITTER IF THEY WANTED ME TO SCUGIFY THE SINNERS OR THROW THE SCUGS INTO THE MAGIC SCHOOLBUS AND THEY PICKED THE FIRST THING SO HERE WE ARE!! no they won't be in order and they'll be sketches done in my free time lmao

info i brainstormed:

-strictly carnivorous; blue fruits in particular deplete food pips for him

-successful case of the combination between a slugcat and the dna of nearly all available insects; centipedes, spiders and dropwigs

-LC-13 can change parts of his body into whatever he may need at the moment (energy and matter conservation and whatnot), but when he's extreme distress, he has no control over the transformations

-has a similar mechanic to mauling; he can latch onto creatures with his mandibles and shock them with his centipede-like tongue, dealing some damage and stunning them

-the "whiskers" can transform into extra arm-like appendages that help him climb poles

-the arm is not a physical augmentation, but a prosthetic; he holds the least amount of control over it and can attack on its own when he is distressed

-due to his arm, his climbing speed is very slow and he cannot wield spears, but he can use his arm to impale creatures

-iterator hermann's name is probs "rewriting progression" or smth idk yet. she has a butterfly motif to make her look disarming and to contrast gregor. she specialized in creating genetically enhanced insectile slugcats as bioweapons to fare war with a neighboring local group, but LC-13 has been her most stable chimera so far (and her prized possession). her and her local group's cans all succumbed but thanks to her investing in a mobile puppet she settled into another can of yet another local group that allowed her in (n corp basically)

-scug gregor chews on batnip instead of smoking in this au, i hc that it's not edible to slugcats and it can actually be harmful on the long run

I cooked up some LORE for my Au scugs!!

Survivor: Has mastered the art of not giving a shit, they are the self-confidence GOD. Other than that, they're not too special. They really love being with inv Monk: Empathatic and kind to all walks of life, He has very few enemies, and is taking up a Social Sciences degree in college. They enjoy company with Saint. Hunter: Thanks to a surgery conducted by NSH, they can control the rot without risk of being killed by it progressing. However, they still need to take pain meds daily. They are a natural born hunter and are very good friends with Gourmand. Gourmand: Gourmand is a celebrity chef who can turn even the worst ingredients into a 5 star meal. He is teaching his wife (Artificer) how to cook after the loss of her children in the war. Artificer: A war veteran, now assistant chef for gourmand, she has trauma from her kids dying and really hates scavengers. Gourmand is trying to help her overcome her RACISM. Rivulet: A rather serious individual when the time calls, silly at any other time, they work as an amphibious technician for the Local Group, mostly conducting maintenance. THey are almost never seen without their suit. Spearmaster: A freak of nature and science, he has the number 7 (or '07' tattooed onto his hand. Despite their scrawny stature, they are very strong. (they're also a tsundere). They DESPISE Five Pebbles. Saint: A relatively kind and caring individual, they work as a local librarian, but also a rehabilitation worker when the time calls for it.

Enot: a 7/11 worker and aspiring Esports player, they love Survivor to bits and would do anything to protect them. They have VERY self-loathing tendencies, but do their best to conceal it. They won't be able to keep a lid on their feelings forever though, especially with the added paranoia of everything 'suddenly going right' ever since they met Survivor. (hurt/comfort yummy) (they've since let most of the feelings out by venting to surv)

How's Saint doing in the dired au? I'm asking bc I told my friend about the au and he wondered is Saint was just hairless now or something bc no more snow = no need for fluff

LMAO bald saint. ok but it does have shorter hair, much more like the other scugs i've drawn with fur and still has its tounge. in the au though, saint is the reincarnation of sliver of straw, and sliver and moon used to be in a qpr before she died, so saint is usually sticking by moon's local group because she knows that they mean a lot to her and is ig kinda like her "guardian angel" if that makes sense. whenever moon is in trouble or ever in need of anything, saint/sliver wouldn't ever hesitate to make sure she's safe and happy, even from afar, especially bc it never really shows itself to moon much, but moon does recall small glimpses of a green organism wandering about from time to time!

OHOHO a chance to ramble about my hcs yes please and thank you ^-^

Gonna be a loooong post since I'm gonna use this as reference later too and maybe changed according to stuff that i add in

All game events all the way to between Monk and Rivulet is the same. Suns' failing to reach Pebbles, Pebbles' rot, Moon's collapse, and Sig reviving Moon happened.

After Moon's last broadcast during Spearmaster, Suns has spent all this time developing a Travel Puppet.

What's a Travel Puppet?

Another iterator puppet basically, one that is more equipped to move outside the can

It is powered by several neurons and a minor rarefaction cell.

Iterators transfer their sentient AI to the travel puppet to use it, but the Chamber Puppet MUST deactivate and the superstructure goes on Sleep Mode. This is done to prevent excessive water intake (like Pebbles' case when he ran multiple parallel experiments, it'll take alot of processing to have TWO puppets working)

Travel Puppets does NOT replace or have the same functions as Chamber Puppets (ex. Moon)

Travel Puppets has limited memory, limited processing power, no telekenesis, and no access to the superstructure network. But as reinforced robots they are atleast strong and can still somewhat check in on their superstructures via overseers. This is also why I assigned them with weapons.

Travel Puppets are made with biomechanical parts without the self-destruction taboo or any related directives assuming the creator used fresh materials, therefore can be used to do restricted maintenance and modifications towards the superstructure.

Travel Puppets have no default template and later on each iterators can make their own puppets with different modifications and capabilities.

If a Travel Puppet breaks, the iterator can choose to transfer their AI back to the Chamber Puppet. If the Travel Puppet's cell is compromised it will explode.

So Suns used their new puppet to walk to Pebbles and try to get him to stop before fully succumbing to the rot. Mind you this is before Suns added the vulture wings and claws modifications.

Well it works (gonna write the confrontation at some point sobs). Pebbles stopped his experiments and later on used the Travel Puppet freedom to do install Subzero blast cooling modifications in an attempt to kill off the rot.

Everyone in the international sphere eventually hears the news about the loophole that the Travel Puppet brings and it became a widespread thing. You can assume that some finally can do life-saving maintenance on their structures or finally went off to ascend, our main cast continues to live because i want them to live out a normal life ok.

After they were able to repair themselves, the local group tried to help Moon rebuild her structure or salvage what's left before deciding it was too far gone. So Moon is given a permanent Travel Puppet to reside in and she loves to travel especially with scug colonies. For everyone else i'll still haven't thought of so I may update this post but you can assume they all do alot of visiting and travelling!

pattons the oldest. hes actually a very old model of iterator, probably one of the first few made.

his city was a big local capital, and there were two nearby cities.

logans and romans!!

as time went on, and all three cities expanded, getting closer and closer until they were practically touching.

after a while, a solution was clearly needed for this.

soo.. the cities were fused.

this now left 1 mega city being supported by three iterators!! the dramaaa

logan and roman were at first. a bit Disgruntled

after a while, tho, the three managed to actually bond.

no clue what the dynamic is yet exactly. but theyre close <3

Design of the Augmented (reverse power Gourmand).

They're an addition to my 'powerswap AU' that I've been exploring since the start of the last Artfight. (The Scugs can be found there, as well as on the Art Arena even on the RW Discord server. We're only missing Surv/Monk/Enot/Nightcat)

Apologies for taking so long with this, and not submitting any attacks on the Art Arena event for a while. I've been procrastinating, while also getting occupied with other stuff. I hope that's ok.

Semi brief backstory and gameplay ideas below cut.

The lives of the Slugcat colonies near Several Fruits became rather dangerous, ever since the incident he has had with his senior.

Thankfully, Ubiquitous Guilt has quickly caught onto what was going on. To which they reacted by only making sure to inform the rest of their local group of the situation, but also starting to work on the development of a creature that could save the Slugcat clans from annihilation.

While Slugcats are nimble and quick witted creatures that don't tend to struggle with food, they're also fragile, careless, and chaotic, while also lacking the ability to actually create any of the tools they need to survive.

So the Iterator has sent them a new kind of Slugcat. A sturdy one, protected by a metal suit, with the ability to craft tools, and a desire to guide the colonies towards safety, prosperity and order - whatever it may take.

The Augmented has a lot of the same mechanics as the Gourmand, with a few key distinctions.

For one, they can craft, but they cannot make meals for extra food, or caught up random items. Instead, they can craft with tools the Gourmand couldn't, such as Spears and Pearls.

The exhaustion mechanic is still there, but the Augmented does prevent it from triggering by consuming a food pip instead. A 'low energy consumption' mode can be turned on, which prevents food loss upon spear throws or excessive jumping, but it will reduce movement speed and spear damage. If they trigger exhaustion with 0 food pips filled, they will stay exhausted until they find something to eat.

Lastly, their diet is an inverse of the Gourmand's, getting full nutrients from meat/other creatures, while getting half from non-meat (so pretty much like Hunter and Artificer, but things like Blue Fruits and Bubble Fruits give 1/2 instead of 1/4).

*AUs your canon so hard they become whole new characters*

I said I was going to make iterators versions of my pjo scugs so here's Hazel's with her scug redesign!

I'm not 100% set on the names yet and honestly am not vibing with DE, but by god is the lore cooking up some soup in my brain (long lore dumps + some design notes below break)

Honestly the Iterator designs are just for fun so not much thought will be put into a storyline, but here it is so far:

Distant Echoes was first of her Local Group to be built. She was created to hold a small population of ancient engineers and scientists as they perfected Iterator design around the region. However, due to the growing load she experienced, her structure was shut down and re-wired with the newer developments of a 3rd Gen model. She's jokingly considered the youngest alongside Seven Flames, Nine Embers (SFNE), Metal of Ten Sung Choirs (MTSC), and First of Minds Fragmented (FoMF) despite retaining memories older than even the Rain itself.

She experiences momentary power failure occasionally, as her structure is still at it core a 1st Gen and therefore less efficient. Her and the others have experienced mild to severe weathering, with damage ranging from temporary memory loss to frequent function disruptions. Still, she tries to keep a positive attitude and utilises her knowledge of Ancient culture to piece together a Solution alongside the Local Group

As for design, I just wanted to make her recognisable as Hazel while keeping with rw's designs. I made her body metallic and her robes like CJ's camp shirt + her overalls. The pearls as a nod to her connection with jewels and metals (on her wires), with more earthy brown for a grounded personality. Not much thinking tbh. Her wires being encased in silver is also a me trying to get locs since I couldn't get her hair shape in there like normal :)

Oh! right, I made her symbol look like Pluto's Y thing mixed with the X karma

Apostate on the other hand is so full of trauma I essentially combined my headcanons for Hunter and Saint's states of being together and smashed them into another traumatised character lmao

Apostate is from a long, long time ago. She was given the Mark and was sent off to help discover the void fluid. Her job was to search through drill holes made by the Ancients and to come back with findings. So, she was bioengineered for higher intelligence than the others of her species at the time. Eventually, she made it to the Void, and her job was finished. The only options left was to either go further or retire. The Ancients chose what they saw as mercy and the Apostate fell against her will.

She fought against the Void and because of this, her more than sufficient Karma wasn't enough for ascension. Instead, she found herself bound in limbo- halfway bound to both life and death. An Echo in physical form.

When she finally made it out, she forsook her old teachings and started anew with a new colony of slugcats. She actively embraces the cardinal sins in fear of being dragged back down There.

Apostate earned herself the name Martyr once her colony found out about her past

again, not much thought behind the designs since I want to keep them game-accurate enough. Her pupils are shaped like the final karma symbol and the edges of her fur look like they're floating away. Typical echo shenanigans tbh. However, when the others reach just the right cycle, they may see shadowy tendrils float from her form

even though the og idea was for them to be traveling alone in their own separate au's, the thought of the iterator scugs all traveling together is just so funny because of the extaordinary circumstances. like...the solution is supposed to be completely random, right? one in an infinite number of possibilities type shit. practically impossible to find.

then seven of them find it by pure chance, ascend, and ALL of them manage to claw their way out of the void. absolutely wild. i wonder if they would even be aware of each other other's previous identities because they're completely different people now and like, what are the chances? unless they can just tell because of echo shenanigans lol.

(sorry if this is long! your interpretation of saint and these scugs live rent free in my head because the concept is just so cool!)

The intetion was that yeah, becauss the solution is basically impossibly hard to find! And also the process of clawing your way out in general is quite specific to Sliver for reasons and so is the way she deals with the situation.

But I find the au incredibly fun so screw logic! Fun is what writing and characters are all about. Yeah let’s have them all together! Insane chances! I think it provides a really interesting and wacky scenario.

I don’t think they’d recognize each other at first, but it wouldn’t take too long to realize something is off with how intelligent/different they act. And I think especially Martyr and Prodigy would reunite first. Those siblings have something special about them and I think they’d be a travelling pair first. And perhaps they’d stumble on everyone else together until the entire local group + Saint end up together.

They’d have a very sweet dynamic in my head. Like old friends that haven’t had the time to talk in a long time. They’ve been alone for so long and now as a group they’re no longer lonely and abandoned.

So I've been planning out an AU for a while now, and I think it's developed enough that I can share my general plans/ideas/etc

...yeah so it's just iterators as humans. but not humans? they're just robots that strongly resemble humans-- the general premise is that the iterators were able to be made compact, built in a completely self-sufficient body that has built in super intelligence and internet access. I also replaced the ancients and thus the iterators with humans. Because I'm a sucker for gijinkas.

Anyways iterators are built for fledgling city-states in order to provide guidance and structure to society. Eventually, however, the city-states become developed enough to form functioning and actually good democracies, and the iterators are no longer needed for their main purpose. When this happens, iterators purposes shift, and they have the option of going to the head city-state (basically the world capital) to join the ongoing iterator research project regarding ascension.

Moon is one of those 'retired' iterators who goes off to work at the capital. However the democracy her citizens attempted to create falls apart in a very short time. It was deemed that Moon was more useful working on the Great Problem then governing, and thus the construction of Five Pebbles began.

Eventually Pebbles' now-citizens actually form a good, functioning, stable democracy (that doesnt collapse), and Pebbles is sent off to join his sister.

What was the local group in canon is now Pebbles and Moon's building mates-- Moon and Sig are roommates, Wind and Suns are roommates, and Pebbles is stuck with UI. I'm trying to decide whether or not I'm going to incorporate the broadcast iterators (I probably will, but they'll most likely end up being filler/background characters).

All of the normal canon stuff will happen-- the mass ascension, SOS disappearing, Pebbies' rot, Moon's 'collapse', all the different scug campaigns (though they will be changed to actually make sense with the story), etcetera. The main change to the canon storyline is that eventually Suns organizes a 'rescue mission' to go get Pebbles and get him to a hospital, where he eventually kind-of-sort-of recovers. (And yes, sunstone is a thing in this AU. you really thought I'd make an AU that doesn't have sunstone???)

This AU is far more detailed and planned out than what I've shared so far, but I figured this was a decent introduction to my nefarious plans mwahahaha

If i end up having motivation i might write a whole fanfiction on this...

Also I still need a name for this AU. If anyone has any ideas, please please please let me know!!

roleswapped into the Monk's role as the easy mode campaign! essentially Survivor with Monk's taming (??the thing where everything hates you less in Monk's campaign) mechanic, the biggest change would be the presence of a temperature mechanic like in Saint's campaign. the slowly freezing to death thing would be slower though, since the place isn't fully frozen over - more like lightly snowed over versions of regions. it still rains, no hail yet. this Surveyor is one of many currently in existence, and one in a long line of surveyors that walked this route around Explosive Redamancy and Rushing Stream's territories before. they are unique from the others due to their playfulness and mischievousness, and is one of the first to receive the modification of having a furry coat to better cope with the cold

the Surveyor's creator, Nineteen Sharpened Hostilities, creates a batch of slugcats every couple dozens of cycles to survey the territories of heos local group. a pearl is planted into every surveyor, and it is configured to be able to record everything the surveyor sees, hears, and smells. the particular Surveyor we follow is set to wander ER and RS's shared territory and some surrounding lands now that they're here though, they can do whatever they want. surveyors don't always return to Nineteen Sharpened Hostilities - and in fact (in the theoretical Surveyor campaign) there is even a pearl that can be found that is remarked to have raw visual, auditory, and olfactory data - which sounds a lot like a surveyor pearl. at the end of it all they can't find a way out of ER and RS's territories, so they fall into the void and ascend. maybe if that retaining wall was ever unlocked (maybe by someone thats tasted the skies) maybe surveyor can return to 19SH and live out a happy life after a safe extraction of their pearl

i am admittedly very much out of the loop when it comes to your oc stuff, but if i understood it correctly an ancient came back to life as a scug after the mass ascension(which actually reminds me of a good fic i read once but that's beside the point) and now they are back to being an ancient, is that right?

oh that's just an au partly- so canonically, in the proper story, Three Sparrows on a Wire, the Ancient in question (who's Caper of Euros' romantic partner and a Mechanic), is very very bad at this religion stuff. and it's kind of her Thing™ that she just plain sucks at the religion stuff as deep as her spirit. since she makes for a bad religious follower, she keeps falling lower and lower on the hierarchy ladder of the Ancients until one time she no longer even incarnated as an Ancient, but as an animal. her spirit ping pongs around in the animal kingdom and at some point incarnates as a slugcat named the Tinkerer. so it's not as much as "coming back to life", it's just the cycle of reincarnation- i don't like the first cuz it sounds like au magic, but nah this is all natural stuff in this universe. the Tinkerer gets her name and also stays most of her life with the Iterator Fish Inside a Birdcage. she helps Fish repair his communication arrays and some other systems. nearing the end of her life, Fish sends her to the local Void access point to ascend like the good religous nerd that he is. she ascends and that's where Three Sparrows' story canonically ends

but in this au, she comes back from the Void as an Ancient again to help the Iterators make a society out of themselves, because if we r supposed to have an off string au we would miss her if she was missing cuz at this point she's a fan favorite i think sgjlsjklsdkmk
