Hey guys
Tumblr media
(art from my friend @mintytealeaves )
@mahmooud-sharif2 reached out to me today, so I'd like to bring attention to his family's GoFundMe
His campaign is vetted by multiple accounts (i'll list them at the end) and his campaign is number 78 on the spreadsheet for families. He has a wife and three children, one being an infant. His goal is 60,000 USD, and he has raised only $12,800.
Please donate to him and his family if you are able, and please reblog and spread either this post or his own posts, so that his campaign can be seen by as many people as possible.

ok, i REALLY want to know what their relationship is like. 👀
between the Save The Migrator project and the Inside Out Party, i don't think we've ever seen them interact directly??? (unless there's smth i'm forgetting.) i mean, the snowball cannon on the Migrator is literally called "Snow Cannon 3000." did Gary build that for him? what's going on there and why do we never see them hang out
it's probably just a case of Gary being an overall good dude who helps a brother out, but honestly? even tho they're very different people who lead very different lives, i think they'd like each other. 'cuz you got this brave pirate who travels the seas in search of adventure n' treasure, and then this mad genius with an insatiable curiosity for the world. you just know that if there was smth big and scary near the island, like the Kraken or smth, these two would be the first to come running.
and they could bond over their shared love of discovery. and cheese. 🧀✨

The Thila [Burkinese mythology; Lobi mythology]
At the dawn of time, the supreme deity Tangba You created the world. Tangba You fashioned the land, the seas, and then the humans to populate the world. But human men lusted after women and soon began fighting one another over the women, and the deity eventually grew tired of this. He was the creator god, after all, and we can assume he had better things to do than solve every petty issue among mortals. So he withdrew from the world of men, never again interfering with mortal affairs. Before leaving, however, Tangba You figured he should leave someone to guide and watch over humanity, so he created the Thila (singular: Thil): a group of semi-divine nature spirits.
This is the creation story of the Lobi people, who live in the north eastern parts of Côte d’Ivoire and south western Burkina Faso. They trace their roots back to Ghana.
The Thila play a very large role in traditional Lobi religion. These spirits are not really gods in the common sense of the word, but they are somewhat similar to the angels of Abrahamic religion (but note that they are sometimes described as ancestor spirits). They offer protection to the people, but also tell them how they should act. Though normally invisible to mortal eyes, these beings take on the form of an animal or a human in the rare event that they do appear before people.
Normally though, a Thil communicates solely through a ‘Thildar’, which is a human diviner in direct contact with the spirits (the societal role of these people can be likened to shamans of some native American traditions). As per the rules of their religion, a Thildar is always male, and usually there are only one or two of these diviners in a community. Each Thildar stands in contact with his own group of Thila spirits, with whom he can communicate during a divination. He then relays the will of the Thila, which includes guidelines and taboos pertaining to all kinds of subjects, including how the people should dress, have sex, hunt animals, etc. Sometimes the spirits demand to hold great feasts or festive events, and sometimes they forbid certain practises. One example is the village of Korhogo (near Gaoua): the people living here stopped sleeping on mats made from millet stem, because a Thil once forbade it. Also noteworthy is that Thila sometimes demand that the Thildar takes up a specific profession, like becoming a smith or a doctor.
Tumblr media
This may sound strict to outsiders, but Thila are kind and benevolent spirits. They receive offerings during special occasions such as births and weddings, and bestow rain and childbirth on humanity. Should the people break the taboos that the Thila enforce, however, they can wreak havoc upon a community.
These spirits are believed to reside in special religious wooden sculptures called ‘Bateba’, which are usually housed in shrines dedicated to that specific Thil. This is important, because the act of placing a Bateba on a shrine greatly enhances its spirit’s ability to manifest in this world, allowing it to protect the people against evil (such as evil warlocks). If a Thil wants a shrine, it will tell this to a Thildar, along with specific instructions of where and how the shrine should be built. Within Burkina Faso, the Lobi are actually renowned for their woodworking skills, and as such the Bateba tend to be impressive works of art.
Finally, I want to mention that there are different kinds of Thila spirits, and the distinction is easily visible in their Bateba carvings. Some examples:
Bateba Phula are humanoid figures with a stiff standing pose. They house regular Thila.
Bateba Ti Puo house protective spirits that defend against evil; they feature raised arms.
A Thil Dorka houses a particularly powerful variant of Thila. It is a humanlike statuette with two heads, referencing the spirit’s ability to watch multiple locations at the same time.

Bug Fables OC Tournament Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lobelia (She/her) from @vulturereyy
Lobelia is – or was – a bright and rising apprentice diplomat from the Red Palace, sent to Bugaria with a mission of helping to rebuild a bridge burned between the Honeybees and the Vulture Bees. However, it seems poor Lobie has gotten quite lost along the way… And for better or worse, she’s here to offer YOU the gifts of her people!
A Vulture Bee’s Ambrosia-Honey is said to grant one the strength of the gods– though the consequences may be severe on your party’s health. And trust. And stomachs. And – oh, dear… Why are you looking at her with those Honey-fevered eyes?
Bau (they/any) from @mantisgodsdomain
(NOTE: Bau's art for this round done by @/bugology)
Bau (short for Bauplan) is a bandit - a dune cricket of a bandit, to be more specific. Cheerful and enthusiastic, they’re prone to making friends wherever they go, with a well of energy and good cheer that almost seems bottomless. Though they belong to a species that’s best known for being antisocial and cannibalistic, Bau is, perhaps, the biggest example of “terminally friendly” you’ll ever meet - in more ways than one.
The ways to describe them are endless. “Party animal”. “Shoulder to cry on”. “Like if you violently blended a frat boy with a golden retriever and then made them 8'2 and a criminal”. All of these descriptions, and more, fit them nearly perfectly (though they are not, in fact, literally 8'2, for reasons relating to them being an insect). When it comes to those they call their friends, they’ve got a nearly endless well of both energy and willingness to stick by the people they care for even in the worst of circumstances.
This extends, of course, to conditions most would consider to be decidedly unfriendly. They’ll consider you a friend long after you’ve stabbed them in the back, after you’ve robbed them blind or carved their shell open with a sword. They are still a Bandit. They understand the kinds of things you have to do to make ends meet! The time might come, after all, where they might have to do the same for you.
They’d hate for you to die - truly, genuinely hate for it - but when it comes down to it, the lives of their fellow bandits have to come first. It’s one life against many - and, you know, even if they’ll mourn over you, their family needs to eat. They care for the people they meet so genuinely it can be overwhelming - even if you’ve only met for a bit, you’re still a friend in their eyes, and they’ll both gleefully and vocally consider you to be a companion. They’re painfully genuine in all walks of life - they would never lie about anything regarding their own feelings, even to spare yours.
Down to the wire, they’ll always pick the option to preserve as many people’s lives as they can. Under kinder circumstances, they would never need to make a choice, but they’re a Bandit, and a high-ranking enough one that making tough choices comes to be their responsibility.
They have the fate of their whole community in their hands. They’d love to offer a better chance, but they have to be pragmatic sometimes, especially when it comes to the Bandits they’re responsible for feeding. When it comes down to a trolley problem, when it’s the life of someone they care for against the lives of however many strangers - your life holds value to them, but they’re not so cruel as to let people starve for the sake of one person’s feelings.
If it were you with your dagger in their chest, then they would forgive you in a heartbeat. But if you don’t feel like they deserve the courtesy of forgiveness - well, that’s fine, too. They don’t get to choose how you feel, after all. What kind of friend would they be if they tried to pick your thoughts for you? They still consider you to be a good friend, even after everything.

Chameleon Headdress
Burkina Faso (Bobo style)
27"l. x 12.75"h.
“The chameleon is abundantly represented in the art of Burkina Faso peoples (Bwa, Bobo, Lobi and Nuna). It is considered one of the original primordial creatures created by God. Chameleons are considered magical and powerful because of their ability to change color when aroused or frightened. Its deliberate manner of walking also makes it an animal to fear.”
“Despite its appearance and patina, this wonderful headdress, worn horizontally, shows no evidence of age or use and was probably made to be sold.”

Roma, 2018
The most profound portrayal of human experience I've ever seen on film.
Roma is a black and white art film which is also a highly personal project by Alfonso Cuarón that features the perspective of Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a domestic servant working for a middle-class family – a character based on the Cuarón's family servant, Lobi.
Cuarón has done a marvelous job taking his childhood and adapting it for the big screen. He also stated that ninety percent of the scenes represented in the film are the scenes taken out of his memory. He went on to win the Golden Lion at the 2018 Venice International Film Festival.
Yalitza Aparicio became the first indigenous woman from the Americas (and only the second Mexican woman) to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role.
