📚✏🎨 #ArtIsAWeapon #Painting of the great #HarlemRenaissance #writer #activist Zora Neale Hurston by the great #artist Loïs Mailou Jones. Hurston was born on this day (January 7) in 1891. From @nmaahc: Hurston published novels, short stories, recorded African American folklore, briefly taught drama at North Carolina Central University, and worked for the Works Progress Administration. Hurston, known for her large imagination and charismatic personality, based much of her writing on life experiences, often creating characters similar to people she knew. Though Hurston had tremendous success as a writer, she passed without enough money for a burial. A neighborhood collection yielded enough for Hurston to be buried, but not enough for a headstone. It was not until 1973, when author Alice Walker, inspired by Hurston's literary work, helped arrange for a marker for Hurston’s grave that reads “A Genius of the South.” #ZoraNealeHurston #AGeniusOfTheSouth #LoïsMailouJones #BlackExcellence #BlackBrilliance #BlackWomenCreatives #HiddenHerstory #APeoplesJourney #TraScapades #ArtIsAWeapon

"Mine is a quiet exploration—a quest for new meanings in color, texture and design. Even though I sometimes portray scenes of poor and struggling people, it is a great joy to paint." Loïs Mailou Jones (1905-1998) #blackhistorymonth #womenshistorymonth #ekwetzel #loismailoujones #loïsmailoujones

#LoïsMailouJones had an expansive career, as both an artist and a teacher at #HowardUniversity, that lasted nearly seven decades. Featured in our April 4 sale is "Lisa," a pen and ink #drawing that was a gift from the artist to Céline Marie Tebary–Jones' dearest and oldest artist friends who met while Jones was studying in Paris in 1937. Throughout the month of February Swann will be sharing the work and stories of our favorite African-American woman artists. #SwannAAFA #SwannGalleries #blackhistorymonth #africanamericanartist http://bit.ly/2UQTjRx
