Home is a Fire | Part 3
They left Stiles out because they knew the nogitsune would tear him apart, but now the nogitsune is gone and Stiles can feel the nemeton telling him it isnât over â not for him. And maybe not for Derek either.
It was just after noon when Stiles pulled up to a small gas station a few blocks from the address his dad texted him for Derekâs house. He needed gas, a sandwich, and a plan. Would Peter have any idea how to contact Cora? Itâs not like they were close. Had Derek ever gotten back into a semi-consistent contact with her? After a few minutes, his tank was full and heâd grabbed a cold sandwich from the store.
The new Hale house was very similar to his fathersâ. A simple, two story home likely built in the early 90âs. He noticed multiple locks on the door when he knocked.
âNo oneâs home,â he heard Peter call, though the locks clicked open one-by-one just a moment later. âAh, my favorite.â Stiles stared at him. In the back of his mind, he wondered what had changed him so deeply that he didnât have a sarcastic remark even for Peter Hale.
âWe have to find Cora.â Stiles walked past Peter until he found a small living room and sat down. âWhenâs the last time you heard from her?â Looking around the room, he noticed Eli was sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone. His attention was pulled up, curious about the new guest in their home.
âI know that Derek had gotten back into contact with her but Iâm not the biggest family man these days. He did say she had given him a phone, in case of emergencies only, but I donât know where he wouldâve kept it.â
âWhat do you want to know about Cora?â Eliâs full attention had shifted to Stiles and Peter now.
âI need to talk to her. Itâs important,â Stiles said. He didnât want to give up too much information to Eli. Getting his own hopes up was one thing but he wouldnât let Eli think there was a chance until he was sure. Eli seemed to be thinking, deciding whether to trust Stiles with some information he knew, and Stiles took the time to really look at him. He saw so much of himself in Derekâs son. There was an expression on his face that he couldnât hide â one that Stiles knew well. That was the face of someone who liked getting himself into trouble. âYouâre the kid with my Jeep right?â Eli met his eyes then.
âIâm just taking care of it. I get it if you want it back.â
âThat Jeep is the last thing my mother left me. She meant everything to me. I know a little about what youâre going through and when I was lost most, when I couldnât find a reason to keep going, fixing her was something I could focus on. In a way, she gave me a purpose every time that I wasnât sure if I could live without my mom. As long as you keep her running, she can be your purpose too.â After he spoke, Stiles broke Eliâs eye contact. He could feel tears in his eyes and see them reflected in the kidâs. It was silent for a moment.
Eli spoke more enthusiastically this time. âDad and I had a plan if anything ever happened to us. We were supposed to meet up in the garage and then weâd leave town and go to Coraâs. He kept a duffle bag there â he called it our âgo bag.ââ He got up and took a few steps towards Stiles. âI can show you where it is. I shouldâve called her anyway.â
Stiles considered Eliâs offer. He didnât want to get the kid involved in whatever he was doing but it didnât seem like there was another option. Peter wasnât fighting to take him there instead. Peter, well Peter seemed to have completely disappeared from the room. Stiles spun around but there was no sign of him. He sighed. âOkay, my carâs out front.â
âAre you kidding? Weâre taking the Jeep.â
Xx
It was so unusual for Stiles to sit in the passenger side of the Jeep. He had forgotten how rough it was on even the smoothest of roads and being in the passenger seat, not being able to feel the engine from the pedal, emphasized every bump. Still, he enjoyed the breeze on their short ride over to the garage. When they parked, he studied the kid again. âHeâs so much like me,â he thought. âI bet he gave Derek Hell.â
âWhat?â Eli asked, when Stiles didnât make any move to get out of the car.
âWhat happened to your mother? You donât have to answer ââ
âShe was killed.â Stiles nodded, not wanting to push him, but he kept going. âI was a baby so I donât remember any of it. Apparently, Dad had gone to live with Cora and her pack. He met my mom in Coraâs pack â said she reminded him of an old friend. I got a lot of her features, thatâs why I only really have Dadâs hair. One morning, him and Cora had taken me so that my mom could catch up on some sleep. A few rogue hunters attacked. When Dad and Cora got back, the pack had killed the hunters, but not before one of them killed her. Thatâs the way he told the story to me, at least. I never really knew her.â
All Stiles could think was how hard that mustâve been on Derek. All of his life, he had been through so many shitty things. If there was a god, they really had it out for Derek Hale. âHe was lucky to have you,â Stiles said.
âI donât know. Sometimes I pushed him too far, I think.â
âWhen my mom died, I pushed my dad. I snuck out every night. Once, I overheard him talking about a body in the woods and I made Scott come out, in the middle of the night, and try to find it with me. Thatâs how Scott got turned. Anyway, I gave him so much shit. Still, he always said I reminded him of my mom. He said it hurt less to lose her because he got to have me. I know Derek wouldâve thought the same.â
It was silent again, until Stiles opened his door. He heard Eliâs door open too and followed him into the garage. âHe talked about you,â Eli said.
âI talked about him, too. I shouldâve talked to him, instead.â
Xx
Eli left Stiles standing in the middle of the garage. Heâd gone into an office where he said Derek hid important things. He came back with a duffle bag that was almost half his size. âThis is the bag. Iâve never looked inside of it â always thought it was probably boring stuff like my birth certificate.â
Stiles laughed. It was a small, short laugh, but still something he didnât do a lot these days. With a smile still on his face, he kneeled down as Eli dropped the bag. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Eli was smiling too.
The bag did have a lot of boring stuff. Eli was right about the birth certificate â it was in a big file folder which had the deed to the land of the Hale House, a few old car titles, and more papers. There were also a few pairs of pants and approximately 20 black shirts. There was a smaller black bag at the bottom which Stiles pulled out and unzipped. Inside were 3 burner phones, all turned off. He switched each of them on and looked through the contacts. One had names he knew â Malia, Peter, his Dad, and Scott. One had Deaton and a bunch of names he didnât know. Family friends, maybe. Maybe other packs Derek had come across. The last one that he turned on had only a single number in it. There wasnât a name on this contact but he knew it had to be Cora. He pocketed this one, turned the rest back off, zipped the bag, and put Derekâs âgo bagâ back together. âGot it,â he said.
Eli took the bag back to where heâd gotten it from before returning. On the way out, Stiles noticed that Eli was putting a code into the office door. He hadnât been paying enough attention before. âYou keep it locked?â
âYeah, no particular reason. Dadâs big on security. The codeâs 7687-9653 if you need to get back in. The numbers spell âsour wolf.â Some kind of joke he always set his passwords to.â Eli passed Stiles on the way to the Jeep because Stiles had stopped walking. Heâd made the wrong choice when he left. Lydia had been everything he told himself he wanted ever since he could remember and sheâd become smarter, stronger, and even more beautiful with every passing day back then. And yet, it was so obvious now that heâd made the wrong choice. âYou coming?â
âI need to take a walk.â Stiles said, making his voice loud enough for the feet between them now. âThanks for your help, Eli. Cora should hear what happened from me so Iâll call her. Iâll drop the phone off to you later in case you want to talk to her, too.â
He could feel Eliâs eyes on him as he walked away. Still, he needed to be alone and he didnât want Eli to hear what he had to say to Cora.
Xx
Cora picked up before the first ring finished.
âDerek? What happened?â She said, immediately.
âHey Cora, itâs Stiles,â He said so softly he worried she didnât hear him. She didnât respond. âIâm sorry, Cora.â
âWhat happened to him?â She whispered back
âHe sacrificed himself to save everyone else. He did save everyone else.â
âOf course he did.â
âCora, I know this isnât the right time to be asking you for a favor, but I was hoping you might be able to help me. Deaton said Talia kept information on your family, Beacon Hills, and the nemeton. If any of it survived the fire, I need to know where it is now.â
âYou donât think heâs dead, do you?â
âI donât want to get anyoneâs hopes up,â Stiles said, avoiding answering the question. The answer was simple though â no, he didnât think Derek was dead. Not for good, anyway.
âWe re-built the library. Before Derek came to live with me, we re-built it underneath our house. The door is under the wolfsbane. Everything that was left and everything that weâve found since â itâs all there⌠Donât tell Eli about this. It wouldnât be fair to him,â She finished. Of course theyâd built a secret bunker underneath the Hale house. Of course they would.
âI told him Iâd give him this phone after we spoke. No matter what I find, heâs going to need you. Scott is a good leader when he needs to be, but he doesnât believe in the pack like Derek did.â
âGive me a week,â Cora said and hung up.
Stiles looked up at the afternoon sky. It was going to start getting dark soon. If he headed towards the Hale House now, he could reach it before the sun went down, but heâd have to go home in the dark. He pocketed the phone and started walking. Walking through the woods, the sky darkening, headed to find a secret buried under wolfsbane on Hale land, he felt like he was 16 again.

Thoughts:
The police force needed funding for a ground-breaking new lie detector that could answer more than just yes or no questions. Nichiuri TV, seeking to capitalize on the appeal of the âhot, young detectives,' had offered to foot the bill in exchange for an exclusive interview. Which is how Kudou Shinichi, Hattori Heiji and Hakuba Saguru ended up here. Eventually, however the questions took an unexpected turn⌠a quite uncomfortable and definitely-not-good direction for Shinichi. âSo the next question is a fan questionâŚâ Himura grinned, making the detectives apprehensive. âHave you ever kissed the Kaitou KID?â Shinichiâs eyes widened, the sounds of the audience faded till all he could hear was the ringing in his ears. Shit.
The romance between KID and Shinichi is really well done, especially Shinichi's own revelation that he actually has feelings towards the thief. And that's not even getting into how well done Heji and Shinichi's friendship is in this, you can really tell how close and comfortable they are, even when Heji sticks his foot in his mouth as usual haha. Other than the romance part, their friendship in this was the highlight for me, especially the part where they trick the interviewer!!
Also, Shinichi going into "Conan mode" is my fave headcannon, that Shinichi will subconsciously behave like he would as Conan and it's so soooo fun to read every time <3 <3

HOLY SHITE THIS STUFF WRECKS ME DEEP LIKE NO WUKONG DON'T DO THIS TO YOUR BUD AND NO MACAQUE DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF These monkeys are such a mess. OP you should definitely post your writing on AO3!
Wassup folks I was having thoughts about Macaque and ended up writing a ficlet using said scattered thoughts about his character. enjoy o7
Wordcount: 2k
.
Macaque wasnât a very complicated person. If anything, he thought himself rather simple.Â
He liked what he liked, and he didnât like what he didnât like. He wanted three main things, and couldnât imagine wanting anything more.Â
Macaque wanted food.Â
More specifically, he wanted fruit. He loved fruit. Having food was an important part of being happy. He knew well that being happy without food in your stomach was a difficult thing. He was especially fond of the sweetness and tartness fruits would give him. He loved to eat it, loved to find the best crab-apples, plums, apricots, tangerines, and peaches, to pick them out one by one and triumphantly show them off before peeling them or shoving them directly into his mouth. He didnât mind digging for melons that were hiding under leaves, or hunting for sugar-cane and peeling off the outer layer with his teeth for the sweet bits inside, or climbing high up to get coconuts and smash them onto rocks to open them up. Shi Hou had smashed a coconut on his own head once, splitting it in half and getting the milk inside in his fur. âLike a rock, see?â he had declared proudly. Macaque remembered hiding his face in his arm to disguise his laugh.
2. Macaque wanted the sun.Â
Contrary to what a lot of humans, and even sometimes other creatures assumed, one of Macaqueâs favorite things to do was nap in the sun. His fur was dark, his natural form of magic gravitated towards things like shadows and places under rocks no one could see, so many assumed he would prefer to spend his time in dark places and away from light. Macaque rather thought the opposite. He believed his affinity to shadows and dark cold places were the very thing that drove him into the sun to shake that uncomfortable chill from his bones and feel soft sweet sunlight on his skin. He loved nothing more than a nap in the soft grass with a light breeze, his stomach full of fruit and the gentle warmth of the sun touching his face and soaking into his fur. The only time he enjoyed shade falling over his face was when he looked up to find another source of light beaming down at him with the promise of mischief in its eyes. 3. (And rather most importantly,) Macaque wanted his friend.Â
His best friend. His only friend really; Shi Hou, later named Sun Wukong. Without him, the fruit was less sweet, the sunlight was cooler, and Macaque was sure he would be less happy. Before, Shi Hou, fruit and the sun had been enough, but after knowing him, being near him, and following him into all sorts of fun and chaos, Macaque couldnât imagine being happy without him. He was a second sun, a light in all the shadows and dark places Macaque used to hide. He was his best and only friend, the person Macaque would pick out of hundreds to spend time with. The only one who could drag him out of his solitude to be with the other monkeys and join in on the fun. Sun Wukong was his person, and it made him happy to know it was just the two of them against the world.
Until it wasnât.Â
Intruding on his happiness came demons, celestials, and every other groveling insect that crawled out of the bush to beg for his friends' time as Sun Wukong started to seek more power. It was fine at first, he made time for Macaque. The extra power felt nice, the reputation he started to build meant no one bothered them. He was gone now and again for increasing periods of time, but most of the time Macaque was with him, and he always came back so it didnât matter.Â
(Until it did. Until he was gone for years.)
It was fine until those three joined the brotherhood: Azure Lion, Golden Peng, Yellow-Tusk... They pushed their way in and sat at the table, taking up space and Sun Wukongâs attention. But that wasnât what really annoyed Macaque. Shi Hou always made time for him, always listened when he spoke, which wasnât often around the brotherhood. No, what annoyed Macaque the most was the wars they spoke of. The battles they laughed about, the glory they spoke of to Sun Wukong until his eyes seemed to sparkle, something a little ugly underneath the awe; want, but not the good kind. What annoyed Macaque was how enamored Wukong was by it all. Rebellion, they spoke of. Pushed forward by bravado, Wukong left and came back with stories that made Macaqueâs hands curl into tight fists and his fur stand on end. Talk of challenging even the Jade Emperor.Â
Isnât this enough? Macaque thought again and again. Isnât the fruit and the sun and me and you enough? Weâre immortal now, isnât this enough? But Sun Wukong was not Macaque. He was never satisfied once heâd seen the other side, once heâd had a taste of heavenly wine, once heâd sunk his teeth into the flesh of immortal stonefruit with juices sweeter than honey, nothing in the mortal world could compare. The peaches Macaque picked for him would never be enough. Macaque would never be enough next to Celestials and people who would never see Sun Wukong like Macaque did. He wanted a bigger title, sweeter fruit, âa better way of life,â he said, âfor both of us.âÂ
Sun Wukong slipped a celestial peach into Macaqueâs hands and he could do nothing but stare at it and wonder how what they had wasnât enough for him.Â
âIâve seen things,â Sun Wukong said to him one night, the rest of the brotherhood passed out at the table. âThe world is so much bigger than this, Luiâer. They laughed at me--at us.âÂ
âWhy does it matter what they think?â Macaque had asked.Â
Sun Wukong stayed silent.Â
Macaque closed his eyes and tried not to think about how his friend felt more and more distant on nights like these. He tried not to think about his own hand in pushing him to this place.Â
After everything, the brotherhood disbanded easily. The nights spent in camaraderie, the talk of glory, the hands on Sun Wukongâs shoulder and pushing him to the forefront of the chaos, praising him as a leader and their King meant nothing the moment he was under the mountain. They scattered like dust in the wind and, as it was in the beginning, Macaque was the only one left.
Sun Wukong was angry. After the initial I-told-you-so that resulted in Sun Wukong screaming at him, Macaque didnât say much. He tried to keep his visits light. He tried to bring him things, tried to keep him company, but his old friend would accept none of it, his hands clenched, his eyes alight with boiling, barely contained rage and hate. It wasnât directed at Macaque, but he still sat a distance away. He understood why so many feared him, but Macaque never had. It felt unnatural.Â
Sun Wukong had plenty to say on his own, filling the silence and Macaqueâs six ears with threats of vengeance and violence that made him turn away and want desperately to press his hands over his ears or stick his head into the waterfall back home so the seething sounds of Sun Wukong's anger could be drowned out.Â
Secretly, privately, quietly, a small part of Macaque was glad for the chains and the mountain that held him down. He hoped it would be enough to calm his friends' anger and allow him time to cool down, time to think and see that there were more important things than power, that it didnât matter what others thought of them so long as they had fruit, the sun and each other. But to his disappointment, nothing changed. No matter how many days passed, Sun Wukongâs rage remained, simmering and hot. It got quieter. Less threats and more growling and silently glowering until Macaque was sure heâd burn a hole right through the chains that held him captive with his glare alone.Â
Inevitably, eventually Sun Wukong directed his anger towards the only available target; his best friend and the one person who hadnât abandoned him the moment heâd lost everything. The one person who came to check on him and visit in the place with no sunshine where the chill would cling to bone even hours after exiting.Â
Macaque took it for a long while. He understood there was nothing for him to do but rage and snap and insult. He understood the bitterness. Or at least he thought he did. Heâd let him rage at him and blame him for it all, being trapped, being useless. He let him call him things and lash out at him even though it hurt because he thought it might make it better. Heâd take it until his hands shook and heâd have to exhale to steady himself and leave through a portal, Sun Wukong yelling obscenities behind him. Heâd always come back and act like nothing happened until Sun Wukong started all over and Macaque would sit until he couldnât take anymore, leave and then come back later and repeat the process all over again.Â
But even a stone wore down eventually, and Macaque was far from as firm and unyielding as stone. His friendâs words chipped away at him little by little until he snapped back, angry at him for not opening his eyes and seeing where they were, why they were there in the first place. Furious at him for being angry at everyone and everything but himself, the real reason he was chained under a mountain and uselessly screaming threats at the cavern as if the echos would carry into the Celestial Court. He was angry at him for looking at Macaque and deciding he wasnât enough.Â
âI did it for YOU--for US!â Sun Wukong roared at him. Â
And maybe it had started that way. Maybe it had been for him once. For them. Or maybe Macaque had turned a blind eye to the lies that had always been there. Maybe Sun Wukong had always been self-centred and selfish and Macaque was too stupid to see it.Â
He snapped back, because Sun Wukong was trapped, he was trapped and so he would sit and he would listen. He would hear every word heâd ignored, every warning Macaque had tried to give him, every accusation and hurt Macaque felt, he would hear it all and he would listen.
Macaque called him a demon. Like so many others before, every Celestial and human theyâd come into contact with, he called him a demon. But unlike the others, Sun Wukong didnât stretch his shoulder and let it roll off his back. Instead, his jaw dropped. His eyes widened. He reacted in a way Macaque had never seen him before. He saw him react and all he could think was âgood.âÂ
It was all a bit of a blur after. He couldnât remember a lot of what he said. He stumbled and leaned against a tree. His hands were shaking, his arms were trembling. His feet were unsteady under him. Theyâd never fought like that before. A lot of it was a blur but Sun Wukong's last words, banishing him from returning ran clear in his ears. And that alone made him bitter enough to close his shadow portal and decide then and there he was never going back.Â
Macaque had only ever wanted three things, but now? He didnât know what he wanted.Â
A lot happened after that. Bad things. Things he would rather not remember, but one thing was certain. The Six-Eared Macaque as he was, without the Monkey King was vulnerable. He was weak. He was all alone and many preyed on him simply for his association with the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Â
So Macaque did all he could think of to do.Â
He built up a wall, a persona of sorts. He needed to become someone else, someone they couldnât hurt so easily. He needed to become loud rather than quiet, brash rather than nervous, scary rather than soft. He needed to become someone no one would mess with or dare linger around. He needed to become someone powerful enough to say no. Someone who didnât want things as stupid and simple as naps in the sun and sweet fruit handpicked from trees and being around friends. He needed to become someone who didnât care.Â
But who could he mirror? Whoâs confidence and brashness could he channel? Whoâs lack of care for the people around them could he mimic and hold close and make himself believe he felt? Whoâs personality could he take and warp into what he remembered, vicious and hurtful and power hungry? Whoâs weapon could he replicate and clench in his hand when he felt an inkling of care for people who wouldnât care for him when it really counted? Who could he mimic to become someone else who didnât want simple things like holding hands with a best friend and picking fruit until they smiled?Â
Why Sun Wukong of course.Â
The most selfish person he knew.Â
(note: please don't slander sun wukong in the notes Macaque's opinions do not reflect the my own regarding the great sage equaling heaven-- hGLS;KJFD)

SATORU ARRIVED HOME EXACTLY 7 PM.
He knew it was true because thatâs the time he always arrived. There was no need to glance at the clock or question anyone around him. He knew it was 7PM.
The sun was peeking through the curtains and basking your shared home in a golden hue. Warmth enveloped his very being as he closed the front door behind him. There wasnât a surface that wasnât being touched by the sun, that wasnât feeling the same feelings he did.
The sky outside was illuminated in a mixture of purples, reds, oranges, and pinks. A palate that could be implemented into his very soul and heâd smile in return.
âDaddy!â
The call was familiar and came exactly one minute after Satoru walked through the door.
Again, he didnât need to glance, he just knew.
A smile blossomed on his lips and he crouched down to catch the little girl that jumped into his arms with a loud squeal. Her nose pressed into her cheek as she happily rambled about how much she missed him. A norm and a routine that he greeted happily with his own reassurances that he missed her infinitely more.
"Daddy," she whined, her tiny chubby fingers reaching up for his blindfold. "Can't see your eyes, daddy."
This happened every night after he arrived home. She would always frown and trace her nails over where his eyes would definitely be. Most of the time it was uncomfortable and, frankly, a little scary, but he always welcomed it with an overly dramatic gasp.
"Oh, sorry, daddy forgot!" He hooked his finger under the fabric and pulled it down to rest against his neck. Her eyes (which were his) met his and brightened considerably. "Is that better, Rie?"
Rie nodded enthusiastically. "Yes!"
Despite the aching behind his right eye, Satoru kept the blindfold off for Rieâs sake. She had always expressed her upmost displeasure for the item since she was a baby. Crying and crying until he finally pulled it off. Itâd been a rough first few years trying to get used to pulling the thing off whenever he got home. But heâd grown accustomed to it.
âWhatâs mama up to?â Satoru asked softly, tracing his finger briefly over the bridge of Rieâs nose as she giggled.
The little girl swayed slightly in his arms. âMamaâs been working in the eating roomââ dining room, Satoru softly corrected with a smile, ââshe put on on Yuki for me to watch while she worked.â
âYuki, huh? Lucky you!â He playfully pinched her cheek which resulted in her swatting his hand with a resounding âdaddy!â in protest. Satoru adjusted her on his hip and raised an eyebrow. âShould we go bother mommy?â
Like usual, Rie enthusiastically nodded in response.
Poor you.
True to his routine, he made his way from the front door towards the dining room, loudly. He left no room for you to not hear him coming him and gave you ample opportunity to prepare for his and Rieâs interruption on your precious work (he swore you were almost as bad as Nanamâ âŚ. as⌠asâŚ).
The smile on his lips didnât falter as his mind trailed away from the forgotten name. What was forgotten obviously wasnât entirely important. He enthusiastically turned the corner, arm thrown out as Rie squealed happily as his rather jerky movements.
You were as you always were. Responsible. In your usual space occupying your rightful position.
Despite the loud (dramatic) entrance he made, you did not react in anyway. Your eyes were glued to your screen as you furiously typed away a response to whoever got on your bad side today. It wasnât an unfamiliar sight. In fact, this shouldâve been around the time Gakuganji of Yaâ someone of higher standing emailed you something that didnât sit right with you. Even the appearance of your amazing and rambunctious husband didnât seem to deter you from your mission.
Satoru pouted, huffing as he peacefully placed Rie down (the girl now more interested in the TV returning to her show), and crept closer to you. Still, you did not look away.
He leaned over, his chin hooked over his shoulder as he peeked over the words you were putting out into the world. Oddly, he couldnât read any of the screen. He tried squinting your eyes and blinking a few timesâ nothing. It was more reminiscent of gibberish than any Japanese he knew. None of it seemed to stay in one place and it all smashed together to create a blob.
You knew how to read and write, he knew that much. Was it something with his eyes? He doubted it. But something wasnâtâ
The laptop clicked close.
âYouâve never been one to take a hint, Satoru,â you turned your head to place a soft kiss against his temple in greeting. He could feel your tiny smile against his skin. The warmth of your lips. The coolness of your silvia left behind. His chest ached. He missedâ missed? âAlthough, I knew that before I married you.â
He pushed away the mud in his mind and turned his head, placing a peck against your lips. Strawberries. You always had remnants of strawberries on your lips. Rieâs favorite fruit.
âI think itâs one of my many charming qualities.â He hummed.
You rolled your eyes, but placed a chaste kiss against his lips once again. âCharming is pushing it.â You patted his cheek. âItâs definitely an interesting characteristic.â
Satoru pouted. âYou make it sound so unappealing.â
âWell, if the shoe fitsâŚâ
He snorted in response, standing to his full height and peeking at you from over his nose. âYou know, youâre not innocent either. Thought you said the TV would rot her brain, now youâre putting it on to keep her distracted?â He spared a glance to where Rie was hanging off the couch, upside down, her eyes glued to the television.
You shot him an incredulous look. âBecause sheâs your daughter and has the self restraint of a puppy. I needed a hour to get some things done.â You pat the top of your laptop. âSue me.â
Satoru smirked. âI just might for emotional damages.â He gestured towards the laptop with a vague hand. âWhat exactly had you typing up a storm?â
There was a brief wave of giddiness in his chest when he saw the look in your eyes darken. Passion. Anger. Protectiveness. There were so many things he loved about you. Adored you for. Made him sick to his stomach whenever he thought about it.
âWell, I got an email from ââ about some work in Shibuya, but I told him I already checked it out and suffered for it. Well, guess what he said? âââ and ââââ suffered too so I canât complain much. Set me off a bit, had to give him a piece of my mind and remind him what happened.â
Satoru wasnât sure if he was having a stroke or he was just too awestruck by your beauty; but he swore that your voice simply stopped whenever you spoke names. As if your voice box couldnât get it out. But you carried on like it was nothing. Your lips had even formed around the words that so desperately wanted to be out there, but were never uttered. You didnât look panicked or disturbed. If anything, you looked normal. Just sipping from your capri sun that was definitely forced on you by Rie.
It was like he was the only one not hearing it.
It vaguely concerned him, but he was also Gojo Satoru. Sometimes weird things happened that had no explanation.
âBut,â you continued once you swallowed down the fruit punch liquid with a twisted face. âI suppose I canât really blame anyone for what happened. It was Halloween, we were all caught off guard. Some of us suffered for it more than others.â
Satoru, for the life of him, couldnât recall what happened on Halloween. But he should. He had that overwhelming feeling that he really, really should.
Either way, he gave a nonchalant shrug, âEh, my motto is that itâs always easier to forgive and forget.â He snatched the remainder of your capri sun and gave a loud slurp.
You grin, resting your chin on your cupped fingers. âI suppose so.â You eyed him warmly, then nodded to the chair next to you. Always warm. Always welcoming. âNow, what did you get up to today?â
Satoru groaned, flopping onto the seat with a creak. He placed the capri sun down to place his hands against his face. âTwo specials grades in Iwate, one grade one in Kagawa, then three nasty things leeching off on the playground on the way home.â He knew he should feel exhausted. He usually did. But that day, this day, he did not. If anything, he felt well rested.
Odd.
You hum softly. âTheyâre overworking you, Satoru,â your tone is barely there. Your words could be missed if the house had any movement or loud noises. But it was just you and him. The soft background noises of your daughter. Always you and him. âThey should recognize that youâre just a man. One day itâll be too much. One day youâll snap in half.â
Satoru frowned, finding the sudden shift in tone a little unsettling. âIâm the strongest, no need to worry.â He waved a passive hand in the air between you.
âIâll always worry. Itâs been my job to worry.â Your eyes moved towards Rie almost melancholic. âSheâll worry too, you know. She does worry. More than she should at 10.â
Satoru frowned deeper. âEhâŚ?â He blinked slowly, eyes sliding to Rie with confusion. 10? Was he crazy? Blind? Since when was the little girl sitting on the couch 10? Last he checked, she was six. It was 2012. Were you losing it on him? Was this your subtle way of telling him youâre spiraling again? âBaby, she is notââ
âI know you worry too. Think youâve been worried about losing since the moment you got home.â
Losing? Heâs never lost. Well, except those few times. But they didnât count. Those were intentional loses.
Satoru was beginning to feel as though you both were having two different conversations. âY/N, Iâm not following.â He stated softly, eyebrows furrowed.
âWhat do you have to do tomorrow, Satoru?â You breezed through as if you knew where that was going. A pensive expression on your face now.
Again, he frowned, narrowing his eyes. âTomorrow? IâŚWell, Iâm going to Shinjuku to⌠toâŚâ ToâŚwhatâŚ? What was it he had to do? He could feel it deep in his chest. That ache. That unfamiliar emptiness that made him rub over his heart softly. There was something he was missing.
âTomorrowâs going to be romantic,â You said wistfully, eyes distant as you sighed. âWell, itâs supposed to be.â
December 24th.
December 24th. So I donât have to remember two different dates.
How romantic.
Satoru felt his gut churn. He wasnât sure why. He couldnât explain it but everything felt so tight now.
âIâm not.. I donâtâŚ?â
Why couldnât he get words out. Why did he stare at you like that? Unmoving, unblinking? Why did his eyes collect with tears.
Why did you look so sad?
You reached out, taking his hand. Itâs cold. It feels cold. Not like the usual warmth that envelopes him whenever you held him. Whenever you reached out from him.
Youâre cold.
You take his hand. âSatoru, whatâs happening tomorrow?â
Seriously, what is with you?
Satoru clenched his jaw. âWhat are you doing?â He wasnât sure why but he felt so unnerved. He felt like heâs been disillusioned. As if his world was crumbling. But he didnât get it. He didnât understand.
Youâre cold.
You looked briefly disappointed in his response. âYouâre not well. Youâre trying to appear to be, but youâre not. She worries. Sheâs so worried. And you know it.â Your hand reached out and cupped his cheek. Your cold thumb gently stroked against his bone, against the tears that were flowingâ why was he crying?
âIâm fine. Just a little tired.â He didnât feel tired. âI just need a nap.â He didnât feel tired.
âOh, Satoru, Iâm so sorry,â you uttered it, barely audible. But it was enough to conjure up an earth shattering sob from his chest. A heartbroken tremble under your touch. âIâm so sorry for leaving you.â
âYouâre right here?â Confusion was clear in his tone and his expression as he stared back at you.
You just smiled sadly in response.
He shook his head. âYouâre right here.â He prided a finger against your chest. Firm. But cold.
You tilted your head and blinked slowly at him.
Satoru wasnât sure why, but he took in as deep breath. Like he couldnât quite catch it in the first place.
âYou didnâtâ Youâre right here!â He desperately clutched onto your hand, pressing your skin against his own. âYouâre right here. This-This is real. This-This is you. Please. Please, this is you.â
You only stared sadly in response.
Satoru wasnât sure what was happening. Why he was so panicked or why he felt so terribly sadâ but he knew it was making him quiver and sob. Why? Why? Why did this all have to happen to you? Of all people had you been the one to suffer?
What suffering?
âIâŚâ He felt breathless. Feather light. He felt like he had no control of his lips or his tongue. âTomorrow I fight⌠SukunaâŚ?â
Sukuna? Since when? When didâ
âSince before Shibuya. Since before Itadori Yuji.â You answered his thoughts.
Itadori Yuji. Satoru thought that name sounded familiar. A blank face appeared in his mind, the back of a pink hair head facing him. Itadori Yuji.
He felt like he was living someone elseâs life. As if he were placed in some point in space where nothing bad could touch it.
But these feelings, these tears, this ache in his chest wasnât peaceful. It wasnât safe from the darkness of the world.
âNanami⌠Yaga⌠NobaraâŚâ You uttered the names that made his ears ring. That made his muscles tense and his heart sputter to a catastrophic halt. âBut still you dream of SuguruâŚ. of meâŚ. of the lives you desperately want to hold on to.â
Suguru⌠youâŚ
Satoruâs lips quivered.
Suguru⌠youâŚ.
âWhy?â You asked the million dollar question.
Breathless whispers against sweat slick skin. Endless touches of tense muscle. Hair hanging and tickling. Eyes sure and hardened with undoubted honesty.
Why? Satoru thought that question was dumb. Why would the earth dream to reach out for the moon and the sun?
He stared at you, big blue eyes glittering with shimmering tears. âIâm the strongest⌠I shouldâve saved the ones I loved⌠I shouldâve⌠Iâm the strongest.â
To be whole. To be loved. To love.
You sigh softly. Sadly. âSatoru, you canât save everyone.â
âBut I could.â
âObviously not.â
The words were final. Absolute. No doubt. And he supposed, a deep part of him knew, you were right.
But that other part of himself. The one that hated himself for what happened, for whatever happened, convinced him otherwise.
âYou donâtââ
âGet it?â You raised an eyebrow at his blink. âIâm your subconscious. Iâm your deepest, most personal thoughts. I get it.â
Satoru stared in return. ââŚhuh?â
You pressed your lips together. âSatoru, youâre the strongest. But you donât always have to be.â You whispered if. A nefarious secret between the both of you that couldnât be touched. That couldnât be shared outside of this setting. You scoot closer in your chair. Youâre slotted between his legs. âThereâll come a time where you need to step back. To rest. And let those youâve guided this far to do their jobs.â
Resting. Stepping back.
No one had ever spoken those words to him before. It was never a guarantee nor was it ever a possibility. He feared, even now, he couldnât even dream about something like that.
Are you the strongest because youâre Gojo Satoru? Or are you Gojo Satoru because youâre the strongest?
Years later, Satoru didnât know what to make of his words. But Suguru had always known him better, he supposed.
Distracted, he didnât realize you had started to card your fingers through his hair, bringing his head against your shoulder. It was a blissful moment when he came to his senses. When he felt your fingers ghost his scalp. When he felt your lips brush against his temple.
âYou should take a nap, you look tired.â
The moment the words left your lips, his eyes felt heavy and he felt exhausted. He hadnât felt tired before. He would love to sleep. ButâŚ
âWhat about you?â He whispered, eyes unmoving from your face. He studied the bow of your lips. The softness and warmth of your eyes. The faint blush across your cheeks. The little wrinkles on your forehead. âIf I close my eyes, youâll be gone.â
âNo,â you shook your head and placed your free hand against his rapidly beating heart. âIâll be here.â
How cliche. He wanted to say. But he would take it. Heâd take and savor any moment with you.
He took in a shuddering breath. âI love you.â
âI love you.â No hesitation. No doubt. How could this be a dream? Something of his own mind? He nuzzled into your neck with a small sigh. âTake care of her.â
Take care of her.
Take care of her.
Satoru woke with a soft gasp.
He was not happy or surprised to find the ceiling of his dark room instead of the dining room.
The clock next to his bed illuminated 2AM in angry red outline. Heâd been asleep for approximately 4 hours. And dreamt of you. Again.
His jaw clenched as he tried to push down the tears that threatened to spill over. You, angelic, in your rightful place typing away. Thatâs what you should be doing.
Instead, you were one of the first to die in Shibuya.
Itâd been you, then Nanami, then Nobara, then whoever else.
She got caught up with Noritoshi in the tunnels, that Death Womb Painting kid tried to explain to Satoru when everyone else had been too distraught and nervous to reveal it themselves. She didnât suffer.
It didnât bring him comfort. Satoru was pretty sure it was a lie, but it still brought him no comfort.
It gave him all the more reason to make Kenjaku suffer.
December 24th.
Today was the day.
Almost two months since your death. Christmas Eve.
Satoru was pretty sure he was about to do the same. Embrace death for the sake of others.
He could look around, tell all of them that heâd win, but there was that growing inkling that this was mounting up against him. That Sukunaâ Megumiâ knew exactly what to do to get one up on him. He feared the unknown. The possibility this was it.
What would you say?
âDad?â
Satoruâs eyes dragged from the ceiling and to the spot next to him.
Now 10, Rie was older and less rambunctious. But he blamed that partly on your death and his sudden sealing.
She had clung to him since he returned. Tears streaming down her face as she hugged him, begged him to never go againâ she thought sheâd lost him just like mama. (Itâd been six years since he heard her call you mama.) And she slept in his bed. Said she couldnât sleep otherwise. Sheâd curl up against him and heâd run his hands through her hair as he hummed a long forgotten lullaby to guide her to sleep.
Shoko said she needed this. Him.
Satoru knew she needed you.
âRie, did I wake you?â He asked sympathetically.
âNo,â surprisingly, it sounded like the truth. âIâve been up.â
He frowned, âWhy?â
There was a prolonged pause between them. A thick layer of hesitation passed and Satoru tensed up. What could she possibly be up for?
When he heard the small sniffle, his heart ached.
He sat up and drew her into his arms, holding her close as he pressed kisses against her head. âHey, hey, why are you crying?â
âI donât want you to die!â Rie sobbed immediately. âI donât want you to fight stupid Sukuna! I just want you to stay here with meâ I canât lose you too!â
I canât lose you too.
Satoru pressed his lips together as tears sprung to his eyes. âRie, Iâm not going to die.â Such sure words for a man who was worried over his own mortality only moments ago. Who had to be reassured by his subconscious image of his dead wife that itâs okay to lose.
Rie shook her head frantically. âNo! I heard Kusakabe say you will!â She sobbed, clutching onto his night shirt with a vice like hold.
Satoru silently cursed the man as he rubbed Rieâs back. âIâm not going anywhere, okay? What does Kusakabe know anyway, the schmuck?â His poor attempt at joking fell flat, Rie only continued to cry. With a heavy sigh, Satoru pulled back, holding her face in his hands. âWhat do I always say, hm? Iâm the strongest. Iâll get one up on him.â
Rie stared up at him and Satoru was painfully aware of how young she was. âYou promise?â She uttered.
Satoru hesitated.
If he were to promise and it didnât actually work out, who was he? Would she resent him for the rest of her life? Would she try to forget him and spit on his memory? Heâd been promised many things in life by people he looked up to and every single one had been broken. Resentment festered. Trust was broken.
What kind of father was he if heâ
Take care of her. She worries.
Satoru tucked some of her hairâ your hairâ behind her ear. âI promise.â He whispered, pressing a tender kiss against her forehead. âI promise.â
Rie clutched onto him once again. âI love you.â
No hesitation.
âI love you too.â
The worries of Sukuna and Kenjaku could wait until morning. Satoru had to focus on her now.
Take care of her.

Tsukishima couldn't believe that it was so dark outside when he left the gym. This training camp would be the death of him.
Dreary and a bit dehydrated, he stepped to the doorway and looked at the surrounding gym-trailers, envious of all the ones that were dark and unoccupied.
His eyes naturally landed on one that was still in-use, though.
Kuroo, who had left early for unspecified reasons, was chatting you up with an unmistakable rizz charisma at the entrance.
You (the now-specified reason) looked downright delighted to be talking to him.
Tsukishima bit the inside of his cheek, heart racing, and barely noticed Bokuto's heavy shoulder slap on the way out of their gym.
"Yeah," He gave a half-cocked, hardly engaged smile and it fell right away.
Bokuto looked over his shoulder for a moment with a confused look- he said nothing to warrant a 'yeah,' but the thousand-yard stare across the kid's face was enough for even him to understand it was out of his paygrade to pry. He continued walking back to his own lodging, quickly becoming absentminded once more.
His immediate reaction at this discomfort was to roll his eyes, put his shoes on, and step out onto the concrete, facing the way back.
Your sweet laugh rang in his ears as he did this.
He looked back, and the older, better in now every way version of himself was brimming with pride that you found him funny.
His dignity couldn't take another beating today. He'd never be able to look you in the eye if he let this one go.
A newfound swiftness in his legs carried him three trailers down to where the light was pouring out into the dark night, blocked only by now: three shadows.
"-that was real sexy-- U-hum, admirable when you told your team off like that today," His fake 'slip-up' had you blushing from ear to ear, hands folded neatly in front of you.
The sly way he lowered his voice to just above a mutter was reminiscent of pillow-talk. He was undeniably smooth and radiated confidence. Even the successfully casual manner in which he leaned against the doorway to both get closer to you and to come across as more conversational.
You corrected him, pushing down his hand; he was about move some of your hair, so you moved it yourself.
You were keeping a polite distance both physically and verbally, "If this is your way of getting intel, you'd be barking up the wrong tree."
Unfazed, he took your hand in his effortlessly, "The only intel I need is your number."
When you took a breath to deny him that for the fourth time, you jumped at Tsukishima's haunted appearance just coming into the light.
Kuroo looked back and nearly jumped out of his skin with an uncool yelp- he quickly covered it with a, "Fuck--! Four-Eyes! You scared the absolute shit out of me."
He caught his breath, holding his chest, "You look like a damn ghost."
You laughed, sharing an entertained glance with Tsukishima, but saw that he was much less delighted to be standing there.
He crafted something on the spot, monotone and sounding just as disinterested as usual, "Coach needs you back at the dorm. It's getting late."
"Oh," You threw a look back to Hinata and Kageyama, who were still practicing, "I was just making sure these two got back in one piece. And- at a decent... time."
You checked your watch and realized it wasn't exactly a decent time anymore.
As you called out to the two still inside, Tsukishima and Kuroo stood in front of each other and crossed their arms with identical scowls.
Kuroo knew that face well. He'd seen it many times with other guys. The 'Go Away, Stop Talking to Her' stare. But he'd place good money on the fact that Tsukishima didn't even know it was a thing.
Even though he was just a freshman, and even though you were too damn good-looking to be Karasuno's manager, and even though he scared him- he took pity on him.
So he let up, but not without one last punch.
"I hope Bokuto grilled you enough while I was gone," He smirked, "You'll need to step it up for tomorrow's match, Tsukki."
There was a slight drop from the gym to the concrete. Tsukishima held his hand out for you to hop down with, and with a look he didn't return, you decided to take it and fixed your shoes.
"I plan to."
You felt a chill between them and had zero desire to intervene. Kuroo seemed to give a subtle, proud smile.
"Good."
The walk back was dead silent. It was slowly suffocating you, nagging at you like flies to just say something about what happened between you.
The pace wasn't fast, but it wasn't slow. And the accommodated lodging wasn't too far off from the lined-up gyms, so you both felt the opportunity growing smaller and smaller.
"It's nice seeing you stay for solo practice."
He said nothing.
"And- you've been getting better."
He scoffed, "Tell me that when we're not hitting penalty sprints after every match."
You smiled. It was quiet again.
"I will."
He looked down at you, brows raised, softer now. He realized how mean he sounded and couldn't take it back. There were a lot of things he couldn't take back.
That feeling helped him not shut down your candid question.
"So, what was that? Back there?"
His response was careful and slow. You were waiting on your toes for each following word.
"I guess-... I'm- surprised."
"What do you mean?"
"That you'd-- entertain that. You're not the type."
"You should be more careful putting girls in boxes, Tsukki-" The nickname just slipped out. You felt your face get warmer.
He stayed silent, though. You couldn't read him no matter how hard you tried.
You continued, treading lightly, "I... I don't know, it is nice being fawned over. It's flattering, at least."
The "Yeah," he choked out sounded like he'd gotten stabbed through the middle with a serrated knife- and you just twisted it.
"Much easier than having to deal with some jackass that doesn't know how to talk to me."
A surprised half-laugh, half-scoff left his lips at your brash comment.
"Really." He rolled his eyes, heart sinking, and regretting just about every moment between you. Especially that out-of-body shit he pulled back there.
"But," You leaned to look at him and found it nearly impossible.
He was staring at the sky. He really did look in pain.
"I wouldn't say I prefer it," A smile crept over your lips, a small laugh at how absurd your own words sounded, "It's not interesting enough."
His Adam's apple bobbed and his jaw worked. He was already at rock-bottom, so there was nothing to hide.
Another sigh-laced response, "What... would you prefer?"
The shared dormitories were approaching closer. You began to mosey, your footfalls with more time between them, smaller distance, in the hopes that you could steal more time alone. It was such a warm night and you were craving to get under a fan, but sweating out in this muggy, paved path had steady-growing appeal.
"Tall," You started to list, struggling to keep a nervous, yet amused grin down, "Blond,"
He finally looked down at you.
His eyes were glossy under his glasses. There was no such smile on his face, but his chest rose and fell faster.
"Intelligent, but-," You stopped and he followed your lead without a moment's hesitation. The pause felt right because now, the street light next to your housing was setting between you in a warm, flickering glow, "Somehow incredibly stupid."
An unfiltered laugh broke his melancholic silence and it was the most beautiful sound you could've asked for.
"Mean," You felt inclined to include through his bout of relieved laughter, "But- secretly really thoughtful, and sweet. And a really cute laugh."
You giggled with him, giddy and incredibly apprehensive as you took his hand. He laced his fingers through yours and your tummy started to dance with a billion butterflies.
Another tentative, gentle hand found its rightful place on your waist.
"I'm sorry," He muttered, "About... everything."
Crystal clear feelings of guilt flashed across his face, despite holding you, your admission, and his reparations today. His insecurities really did manage to worm their way back in.
"I thought it was pretty clear that I forgave you," You grinned, squinting up at him, "But since you're so stupid-,"
He smiled and looked away, shy.
"I guess I have to tell you directly that," You grabbed his chin to force him look at you, "I forgive you."
Those eyes were beyond complex. His charged, but needy stare sent a shiver down your spine and made your knees so weak that you were appreciative he pulled you closer to his chest.
You knew he didn't know how to kiss.
So you made the first move- a soft hand to the side of his face to guide him down, and a gentle, barely-there, slow peck. He started to kiss back, but it was over before he got the proper chance to try.
"One more," He breathed, the tiniest smirk covering a bottomless desire for you.
He could hardly form a kiss through his smiling, you weren't sure if he was really even trying on the second time he asked for another.
You leaned up for a third, hand at last unlacing from his, and slid to the base of his neck for a subtle pull for control. A deeper, much better kiss ensued as the result of this direction.
That unsure hand on your waist gripped harder with growing certainty- his thumb wrapped forward around your hip and squeezed, sending a shock throughout your body that left you tugging at the roots of his hair.
"Mmn," You buzzed against him and, a bit breathless, sucked a small, red spot to his jaw when you couldn't keep kissing him anymore.
"Ye-ah-" You seethed, brow knotted, "We can't do this here."
He was panting at the loss of your touch and your pretty voice. He nodded dumbly but didn't move.
You carefully guided his hand off of yours, holding it for a moment, and smiled at his dazed expression for all it was worth.
Your timing couldn't have been better. Just as you climbed the first steps to get into the building, Tanaka burst through the door in a fury.
"(Y/N)!! Where were you?! I'vebeenworriedsick!" He cried, only just barely drowning out the rapid, thundering of footsteps (interrupted only briefly with a crash and resulting shout) from your other personal fan, Nishinoya, who burst through the door in an identical fashion-- "Thank GOD!"
They both collapsed against you, not even giving you the chance to register their incessant noise.
"Jesus," You wheezed at the absurd weight of them both.
Tsukishima went completely unseen for the second time that night.
"Get off, both of you!" Daichi's disembodied, reprimanding voice called from upstairs. He certainly couldn't see them, so he must've just known.
With great, exaggerated labor, they did as told, but didn't drop the subject.
"You've never been out so late before!" Nishinoya exclaimed, taking both of your hands in his with big, dinner-plate eyes. It was only 9:30.
"Well, you have Tsukki to thank for getting me back safely," You joked, much quieter than them, heart light on the heels of a good kiss and in the company of good friends.
They looked around before spotting him, generating an amused smile on your face, and shook both of his hands at the same time, thanking him many times for his service.
"He saved me from Kuroo," You added with a playful glance back to Tsukishima, now free to walk in with them out of the way.
Now he was the one bombarded with questions as you slipped your shoes off in the doorway.

Voice Kink | Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw x reader | wc: 1,246
No use of y/n | 18+ Minors DNI
Warnings! dirty talk, make out session, fingering, Rooster being an annoying gentleman, lmk if I missed anything
Ao3
Kinktober 2024 Masterlist
a/n: sorry it's late!
It was the best part of Roosterâs day, hearing your voice over the radio. You were a radio control operator in the tower, the only one who laughed at his jokes, and you would carry conversations with him as best as you could, answering with professional yeses or nos when your boss was in the room, even when he was flirting with you.
âHowâs my favorite girl doing on this fine morning?â He knew he was testing it, flirting with you over open airwaves but he couldnât help himself, wondering what you looked like, sitting in the tower. Heâd thought about it so many times, what you would like like, what your voice would sound like without the distortion of the radio, and what you would sound like when he finally got his hands on you. Fuck, now was not the time to get a boner.
âThis is tower control, Rooster, please wait, your clearance for takeoff has not come through,â He grinned when you responded in your my-boss-is-here-you-jerk voice.Â
âUnderstood, tower control but Iâm still waiting for an answer on how my favorite girl is doing.â There was a pause and he wondered if he had blown it but your soft response finally came right before he could offer an apology.
âIâm having a pretty bad morning but if you manage not to scuff up my runway, itâll be a little better.â Rooster frowned, you were having a bad morning? He wanted to pry but over the radio probably wasnât the best place to do it.
âYou must be thinking of Hangman, sweetheart. I would never scuff up your runway,â Your laugh filled his headset and it helped him relax.
âTower control to Rooster, you are clear for takeoff.âÂ
âRooster to tower control, requesting permission to land.â Rooster didnât have to wait long for your response.
âTower control to Rooster, you are clear to land. Remember, I want you to put it down smoothly.âÂ
âI can do a lot of things smoothly,â You tried to muffle your giggle but he still heard it. âAnd I can prove it to you.â
âOh yeah? Well, letâs see you stick this landing and maybe Iâll wear my new red dress to the Hard Deck.âÂ
âIâm going to hold you to that, get ready for the best landing youâve ever seen.â Rooster pulled out all of the stops, making sure to hit the first wire, laying down his plane as smooth as possible on the runway. âSee you at the Hard Deck, Iâll be the one in the Hawaiian shirt.âÂ
Your friends in the control tower had given you so much crap for planning a date over the radio but as embarrassed as you were, you were also excited. Rooster had to be hot, his voice was all deep and on morning hops it had this rasp to it that had your mind drifting outside of the control tower and straight to the bedroom, imagining what it would sound like first thing in the morning.
âCall me if you need me to pick you up,â Your friend said over the phone while you stood outside of the Hard Deck, gathering the nerve to go inside. âBut I really hope Iâm picking you up from that pilotâs place and not the bar.âÂ
âShut up,â You laughed, hearing a car door slam shut in the parking lot. âThe first thing you said to me when I transferred here was not to sleep with any of the pilots.âÂ
âNot sure I like that advice,â Roosterâs voice had you flushing pink, heat washing through your body. You hung up on your friend, looking up to finally catch your first glimpse of Rooster and your breath caught in your throat. No one should look that good in a Hawiian shirt. Tall, tan, and a mustache that wouldnât have worked on anyone else. You felt your knees go a little weak. Rooster smirked, âBut I do like that look on your face.âÂ
âI have no idea what youâre talking about,â You leaned against the wall, smiling as he closed the distance between the two of you. âThis is how I usually look.âÂ
âI really hope not,â Rooster rested a hand on your waist, looming over you, his spiced cologne filling the air around you. âBecause then every man who sees you is thinking exactly what Iâm thinking.âÂ
âAnd what are you thinking?â You hoped he was thinking what you were thinking, which involved moving away from the bar and towards his car as fast as you could. You wrapped your arms around his neck,
âThat youâre just as sexy as your voice.â You went up on your toes, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips that Rooster wasted no time deepening, pressing his hips into yours. âItâs embarrassing what your voice does to me.â He kissed down your neck, pulling whimpers and gasps from your lips.
âI love it when you flirt with me over the air,â You admitted, slipping a hand beneath his undershirt, feeling the smooth muscles of his back. âShit,â Rooster nipped at your pulse. You could feel his hardness against your thigh, showing just how much he wanted you. âPlease tell me you drove here.âÂ
âSure you donât want to have a drink first?â
âWhy, is Hangman in there?âÂ
âYeah, thatâs it,â Rooster threw you over his shoulder and you squealed, âIâm not letting you anywhere near Hangman in that pretty little dress.â Rooster carefully set you in the back of his car and crawled in after you.
âPossessive is a really good look on you,â You grabbed him by the collar, pulling him down on top of you, kissing him hard.
âGood,â His calloused hands ran up your thighs, pushing your dress up to your waist. âBecause I donât share.â Roosterâs fingers ghosted over your panties, drawing out a soft moan. âHow are you worked up already, pretty girl?âÂ
âWell, youâre hot,â You nipped at his bottom lip. âAnd your voice, fuck,â Rooster stroked you through your underwear, âI hear it in my dreams sometimes.âÂ
âGood to know Iâm not the only one.â The two of you made quick worth of your dress and underwear, the backseat filled with moans and sweet nothings, whispered between kisses. Rooster had his fun, working you up on his fingers until your toes were curling, âCum for me, baby. Cum on my fingers like a good girl,â Pleasure washed over you, your body arching, fingers digging into Roosterâs broad shoulders.Â
âWill you please,â You panted, trying to catch your breath as Rooster lavished your neck in kisses. âPlease fuck me?âÂ
âI feel like I should take you out on a date first,â Any other time you would have appreciated him being a gentleman. But not when you were naked in the backseat of his car, feeling just how hard he was pressed against your sensitive core.
âThis isnât your pre-flight checklist, we can do things out of order.â Rooster chuckled,Â
âI knew youâd sound good like this, so needy for me.â You rolled your eyes, grinding up into him, âLet me take you out to dinner first.âÂ
âAm I going to win this argument?â Roosterâs thumb found your clit, your body jolting at the contact.
âHow about this, you come on my fingers for me one more time, then I buy you dinner,â He slipped a finger inside of you, âThen Iâll take you to my place and give you everything you want.âÂ
âDeal.â

Gojo figuring out how arranged marriage works.
CW/TW: Fem! reader, Arranged Marriage, Heavy suggestive stuff, Mentions of virginity, Condoms?, Gojo typical flirting, Reader & Gojo ages implied to be very young (18-23), SFW (Lmk if I should add anything else!)
Characters: Gojo x Reader
AN: Part 2 of the arranged marriage fic. I will die on this bitchless Gojo hill.
⢠Part 1 Here ⢠AO3 Link â˘
"You look as beautiful as the day I married you hon'." He says with his characteristic wide smile, proud of himself for that line. Even threw in a sweet pet-name, the kind girls like.
"You married me, like, two weeks ago." He should not be proud of himself for that line.
The silence is almost deafening after that, and Gojo hates the quiet. Can't stand it. He's not used to it, he's loud and obnoxious, he's self-aware of that though, part of his charm he says. Charm, he's got an endless bountiful of it, in his ego-ridden mind at least, and honestly, he's not wrong. There's absolutely nothing Gojo lacks.
Killing curses as though it's walking through a park, handing out checks like he's got an unlimited supply of them. A living breathing powerhouse, a god even, some could say. He's young, a very young man, but he's already hailed by Jujutsu society and about anyone with a semblance of knowledge of who he was, The Strongest.
Fresh into adulthood and he's already considered one, if not the most notorious man in Jujutsu society, the potency he holds is incomparable to any other. Handsome too. Fluffy pearl white hair, legs for days, a nice build, toned, keeps it all maintained effortlessly, genetics or the such he thanks for it. A flirt in nature, girls fawned over him, how could they not? An attractive dashing young man such as himself of course they do.
Never been with one before though. A woman.
He didn't date in his teens, school was grueling, he was the strongest and he was busy, always. He could get a girl all buttered up on words sure, he has one hell of a mouth on him... Couldn't actually ask one out though, or kiss one, or get laid by one. His experience with them is non-existent. Truthfully, Gojo is as virgin as a virgin could be, he seems like he lacks in nothing, but relationships? He's clueless.
Yet here he is, married. Weaved into a union with a woman. The papers signed, wedding ceremonies done, vows out and said. Sealed his whole self to another, to you. And as are you, sewn into this 'relationship' same as he is to each other. Orchestrated by the hands of Clan elders, arranged before either of you had met each other.
Fourteen nights of sharing the same bed since, living together as spouses. It's odd, confusing, Gojo who bathes himself in self-assured composure twenty-four-seven, hasn't the faintest idea how this works. But, he is Satoru Gojo, he's hot shit, and you haven't had any complaints yet. Even if you're only two weeks into marriage, he's got this.
Just like he's got everything else in his life, he's sure of himself. The two of you have slowly, but surely gotten more comfortable with each other. Gojo does well, friendly and welcoming by nature, albeit it can come off as cockiness, he brings energy into every dinner you two share so it doesn't feel jarring and off-putting eating with basically a stranger who you'd call your spouse.
The times you touch, comes off as natural. A smooth one he is, Gojo, craftically slipping his hand by your ear to tuck a strand hair, nudging you awake in the morning effortlessly so you don't get startled. The touch of your knees when you sit beside each other. It feels natural, he makes it feel natural.
To you.
But Gojo? His brain is working in overdrive, has been since the day he took you home from the wedding. He didn't realize it at first, still full of himself in ever-lasting confidence, but as quickly as the first two weeks of being newlyweds went by, so did the semblance of stability he held in his ego. Neither of you had even shared a kiss yet. That should've happened by now, right?
Fuck.
Wait, should you two have fucked by now? Lord knows he's thought about it, a lot, he's a young man stocked full of endless libido. And you are his wife, and you're pretty. Every feather-light touch he's managed to sneak in effortlessly you seemed at ease in, but he's been mentally reeling if it's too far. Too inappropriate, but then again you are his wife.
He's your husband, you two are literally married, living together, sleeping together. Sleeping together only, of course, sex feels like something in the distant future. He'd hate to pressure you, especially since you two are just starting out, technically already locked in, till death do us part, but truly just at the start of companionship with each other.
But Gojo, is impatient and a bit aloof. He's not gonna push for anything, but when he saw the condoms at the store and thought 'Hey I have a girl now!' what else was he supposed to do? Immaturity at its finest considering how he's now sat with you, and the condoms stuffed into his back pocket while you two sit on the bed and you'd just shot down his sad attempt at flirting. With his own wife.
"...Is there something you wanna tell me?" Your eyes are glued to your phone as you ask, but he notices they flicker onto him. He's staring, isn't he? You've gotten used to it, his eyes just have a mind of their own, he can't help it he always looks like he's glaring even when he's not, and after a week spent with you sharing a home with him, he can't help himself but look at you. You're beautiful. And you're his.
"Maybe." He'll settle for being a smug little shit instead, still staring at you as he speaks.
"Maybe?" You repeat, putting down your phone in interest as he clearly tries to lure you to talk.
He hums, shrugging innocently and crawling to your side of the bed, used to be his but the night of your wedding you unknowingly took that side and he's been letting you rest on it since. Seamlessly, he pulls his face to yours in a swift but not sudden motion, his nose almost budding with yours.
There's a shared glance, a look into his eyes as he looks into yours, and the density of the air in the bedroom suddenly shoots up straight to 100. Ticklish bouts of his breath fanning lightly against your cheek while he smiles at you, expression, as always, never faltering. But movements telling. He takes your chin by his narrow fingers. You hadn't even seen them move to grasp your face, too transfixed on the look in his palpitating eyes instead.
"Can I kiss you?" There's a second, a moment for you to think, drawn out by the way his voice glides through your ears as he asks. Two weeks together, vowed to one another and you've found yourself caught in his gaze alone. You're starting to feel it, the drum of your heart responding to him.
And so, you nod, his grasp on your chin so gentle you don't even notice it's there holding your face near his as you do. It happens quickly, but it feels like an eternity, a good kind, a soft sort of mere milliseconds between the nod of approval and him moving forward catching your lips against his. His lips are soft, lulling against you and though brief has you leaning into him for more, slouching into him like you're calling for him to caress, to feel more of him in the moment, and he does that, his hands moving to wrap around your waist, pulling you into him.
Once it's done and you two, in natural timing, pull away with a slight wet plop noise breaking the silence you can see it in his eyes. Desire, need, and maybe, just maybe, love. It's small but it's there.
He meant it when he said he liked you, then on that first night, purely by expectation, you're his wife. Of course, he likes you, you're supposed to like him, he's your husband. But two weeks in and he's understanding it more, what it means to like someone, to have them as yours. To have you as his. His dazed expression from a kiss alone tells you that, this is real. He's married and he just kissed a girl, the girl he's promised his life to.
"..Gojo-"Â You murmur as he reels from the kiss and gathers himself, a goofy grin plastered on his hazed expression.
"Mhm~" He purrs at you, starting to get giddy.
"Are those condoms?" He blinks at your question, stare breaking from your eyes and your lips he'd left wet with his saliva he'd been caught up looking into, to where your eyes had turned to look. He follows your eyes and looks to see the box out of his pocket, crumpled slightly from him sitting on it, spilled open over the bed.
The rubbers are all over the bed.
His hands don't pull off the sides of your waist, and his smile doesn't falter. Instead, his smirk grows, and he turns back to look at you in the eyes again. Giddy expression is written all over his face, his fingers pulling you closer with ease, because you lean into it and situate yourself closer as he does so, responding to him.
"Yup!" Gojo Satoru has no room for shame. Much less with the pretty woman he has as a wife. Marriage, the foundation of family, what makes a house a home, as his elders told him, he's getting it now. Having you here only two weeks it's already starting to feel properly shared with you, his house, your home, both of yours home.Â

Tomorrows From Before | Part 2
CW: Mentions of sibilng in rehab, rude pranks, crying from frustration. LMK if something else should be noted.
AO3
âLynx!â
The shout of your call sign caused you to spin. One of the civilian aides ran after you in her smart heels and slacks. You waited between the buildings, the neatly cared-for grass on either side of the concrete. You didnât envy the women who worked on base and had to wear business casual clothes. You could get away with fatigues or workout clothes in and around the gym.
âHi, can I help you?â The neutral tone was one you had perfected for dealing with superior officers and unwanted male attention.
The womanâs high ponytail swayed as she held up a finger and rested one hand on her hip to breathe.
âYou walk really fast, did you know that?â She said between breaths.
âI canât say Iâve noticed, sorry.â You offer a half smile.
âIvy mentioned you would be interested in hosting a workout session for any of the ladies who would like to attend, is that right?â She straightened, heels pushing her head above yours in your boots.
âYes, I like hosting classes when I am on base, I get bored of lifting weights and have noticed that even wives and admin staff enjoy a bit of workout from time to time,â you shift your weight to one foot and slide your thumbs into the edge of your pocket.
âI can make that happen. I schedule most of the training and things around here and can schedule a few tentative evenings for a workout. Iâm Tana,â she offers her hand for a shake.
âLynx but you know that,â you shake her hand with a smile, thumb returning to your pocket. âSchedules can be a bit wonky for me because of the task force, but I think a few tentative nights would probably work out best. Would emailing or texting work better?â
âEmail for this,â Tana nodded affirmatively.
You rattle off your .gov email address and confirm the spelling when she turns her phone back to you. Parting with a smile and a wave you continue your trek to the conference room with the small table that served as the office for the 141. You had the worst seat, back to the door, because the guys hated you and you had joined last. The refrain in your brain when you sat to work at your laptop was âI could ask Price to work from his couch, he would let me.â You didnât though. It felt like losing ground to cede the empty chair to them.
The rattle of the fan blowing the damp air around the room muted the sounds of breathing but not the slow peck of fingers on keys. All of them did that, the hunt and peck, though Ghost was the worst. Man stared at his keys instead of his screen.
Letting the front legs drag against the floor you stepped around it to sit. Gaz sat back in his chair arms crossed as he stared at his screen. The report sat empty, cursor flashing as if reminding him it existed. Roach played minesweeper on his. Did computers even come with that installed anymore? Dropping into your chair gravity took a swing at you.
Without even time for a short shout, you wheeze out a breath as you lay on the floor. The back of the chair digs into your spine, metal bends carving away at your flesh. Soap and Ghost stand from the opposite side of the round table to stare down at you from on high as Gaz and Roach share a look before snickering.
Insult is added to injury when Price opens the door directly into your head. The laughter stops, confirming your suspicions.
âWhatcha doing on the floor Lynx?â His mustache twitches as he peers down at you.
âGuess my chair just gave up the ghost Cap. You need something?â You wince as you put more weight on your back, pulling your legs off to one side and roll to kneeling.
âYes, letâs head to my office,â he holds the door open for you.
Standing you ignore the eight eyes on your back. Let them wonder.
Safely behind the shut door of Priceâs office, dimly lit and covered in paperwork, he looks you over.
âItâs started hasnât it?â
âThe hazing? Yeah, I imagine this is the first blow,â you reply as you rub a hand over every sore spot you can reach.
With a sigh that would rattle the dead, John, for he is John behind closed doors, gestures for you to sit.
Glancing at the chair you wince.
âThink Iâll stand John. Thanks though.â
He shrugs as if saying âYour choice,â and pulls out a stack of sticky notes from below one file centered on his desk.
âI got a call from your mother today.â
The chair looked much more inviting now.
Your mother was, in the nicest of terms, a narcissist. She play acted as the role model and the perfect mother, burdened with so many daughters spread across the globe. Most of your sisters talked to her still, you did not. The relationship had never recovered from her confirming that she loved you, she just didnât like you. Not liking the way her love suffocated you under passive-aggressive comments about weight, or smartness, or lack of makeup, or any number of superfluous or petty things you had found peace with distance. If she was one of the reasons you took the job-based in England with the 141? Well, your mother never needed to know that. She must have gotten in quite a bind to dig out what base you might be on and convince someone to patch her through to your CO. And that said nothing of the time difference.
âDid she say what she was calling about?â You ask carefully.
Not that she wouldnât break contact for any number of lesser reasons but the gravity by which Johnâs words fell worried you. Could it be your grandmother or any of your aunts or uncles? It couldnât be anything with your sisters, most of them would text you the moment they heard something going down. You werenât close, but the trauma bond of trying to escape the house alive kept you in contact. Well, that and discussing what batshit nonsense your mother got up to.
âShe asked that you try and call your sister Sari.â John glanced down at his note, âShe said and I quote, âSheâs trying to leave and youâre the only one who can talk her down.â Do you know what she means by that?â
His captainâs face is on when he looks back up at you, calculating. This is the face you see when he is thinking physics in form and function if not equations.
Working your jaw back and forth as you swallow down your nausea. Your sister Sari, the oldest of the six of you, turned to drugs to deal with the constant belittling, backbiting, invalidating, and general hatefulness that lived between breaths of your childhood home. Everyone else had cut her off. Your mother still talked to her but of the siblings only you spoke to her on a regular basis. The payments for her expensive in-person treatment to get clean came from your account. Sari couldnât burn a bridge she couldnât reach and with you always being scheduled on bases far from home she couldnât steal, bribe, or threaten you for drug money. This was her fifth time at rehab, and the last you could pay for. The few dollars left in your account after each payment wouldnât even get you a good beer out here.
âIn the simplest terms, my sister is attempting to leave rehab and my mother thinks I can somehow fix it from several hundred miles and a few too many time zones,â you stare at him as you answer.
âWould you like to take some time to handle this matter?â John questions carefully.
The snort is involuntary.
âWith what money?â You mumble under your breath.
Before John can pounce on that comment his desk phone rings.
He glances from it to you, face neutral as he lifts the receiver to his face.
âThis is John.â
His eyes go distant as he focuses on the call in his ear.
âPatch her through.â He holds out the molded plastic over the desk, âItâs for you.â
Dread settles in the fluid between your cells. Taking the phone gingerly from him you stretch the twisted cord as far as it will reach.
âThis is Lynx.â
âHi, sis.â
Sari, with tears in her voice, reaches across an ocean to caress you with her needs.
âWhatâs up Sari? Iâm working right now.â
âIâm so tired. I want to go home,â her voice breaks on the word home.
Rage should never be the first reaction to pain, especially to others. You also want to go home, somewhere that love lives, but you canât. Neither can she.
Silence lingers on your end. If you open your mouth now all the vile, hateful, evil thoughts that have slid through your mind will come rocketing out. Youâve completely forgotten your captain is staring at you as he watches you fight back all the training from childhood about how to inflict emotional agony.
âI think Iâm gonna leave sis.â
Itâs too much.
âLeave then Sari. Youâve never cared enough about anyone to get clean. I wonât pay for another shot at this. Leave now and the next time you get clean will be because youâre in prison or youâre dead. Either way, it wonât be on my dime anymore.â Even poison dripping off your tongue couldnât feel this vile.
Sari stutters on the other end of the line. You cut her off, âI am nearly dying on a weekly basis to keep you from dying because everyone else gave up on you, even Mom and Dad. If you leave I wonât be stuck in hell for you. Tell the front desk to call me if you walk, I want to see if I can get a refund.â You slam the phone down into the cradle. God bless bureaucrats who refused to update from hard-lined phones.
You stand, feet apart and lungs sucking in air as if you had just escaped an altercation with an enemy.
âCare to tell me what that was about?â Price asked carefully.
âNo,â you bite out.
âNo?â His brow lifts with the upturn of his question.
âNo, sir.â
âThat is not what I was asking for. Sit down.â
You sit, hands braced against the armrests as if you could rip them off and use them to fend off his questions.
âLynx, I need to know if something in your civilian life can compromise you. Now, tell me about your sister and how you ended up paying for her treatment.â
The silence stretched to the point of snapping.
When you open your mouth all that escapes is a sob of frustration.

Tearing through the woods outside of the shrine, you don't think about your sister, this time. You don't think of your father or his men, your mother, nothing. No memories, pleasant or unpleasant, swim up through the ink of night as the trees claw at your clothes and skin. Your mind is eclipsed with a fear as hot and red as the fire in your lungs.
You have not known fear like this for a long time, perhaps ever. All the running that you did from your father and his men was done more out of spite than fear. You had certain expectations of them. You were familiar with their cruelty and the limitations placed on it by society, or by your mother, perhaps. You father was not a kind man, by any means, but his eyes softened somewhat when they looked at her. The only power that you had was that of being able to put them through their paces. Here, you did not even have that. The comfort of expectations does not exist for the monster at your back, no more than the limitations of ordinary men.Â
So, you run, spurred by terror long after your rapidly depleting stamina should have forced you to stop. It feels like hours have passed when you finally come to a halt, hands on your knees, panting, muscles burning. Hyperaware of every sound, every sensation, even the trickle of sweat down the line of your back is enough to raise your hackles, but there is nothing but the ragged sound of your own breathing in the stillness.
As you try to slow your respirations, you ask yourself what it is you're so afraid of. Pain? You are overly familiar with pain. Your heart gradually slows as you come to the conclusion that Sukuna can only hurt you or kill you, just like any other man. Pain you can endure. And death? Well, if you are dead, then you won't be bothered, will you? You'll just be dead. What would wound you more is humiliation. Your mouth presses into a grim line as you ponder it.
Did the bastard confiscate your things and let you go, trusting that you would meet your own end in the forest without his help? Not the worst plan, you decide, as it occurs to you, for the first time, that you really have no place to go, no plan beyond running. Beyond escape. You've never had to plan beyond that because you've always been outnumbered, overpowered and dragged back.
Does he think you will return on your own? You scoff into the darkness at the thought. I'd sooner hang myself from one of these trees, you think to yourself as you look up at the branches, silver in the Autumn starlight. Still. Quiet. Unnaturally so, as if the earth itself is holding it's breath. Hiding.Â
Even before you hear it, you feel it, looming large and lethal at your back. Larger than Sukuna, even. Much larger. It shifts it's enormous weight, rustling the leaf litter. As you peer over your shoulder, your eyes widen and your heart hammers against your ribs like you never stopped running. A reptilian chittering sound blooms out of the dark: a bony whisper, a rattlesnake kind of warning. The moon outlines it's dark shape in indigo, a moving mountain that tears trees right out of the earth as it moves after you. How you didn't see or hear it before is a mystery.Â
Your feet slam against the shuddering ground with the slowness of nightmares as a scream claws it's way out of your throat. You don't make it very far before a root hooks your foot and sends you sprawling. A sickening snap followed by bright sparks of pain shoot up from your wrist as you catch your fall with your hand. When you look down to see splinters of bone jutting out of a ragged wound, a hysterical sob escapes your mouth. You clutch your injured limb against your chest as your heels churn at the dirt, propelling you backwards, too slow as the monster stops short in front of you.Â
It is too awful to look at, a twisted amalgamation of drooling faces and colorless eyes shining with idiot hunger as it prepares to stuff you into its many jagged mouths. You dig your chin into your shoulder, squeezing your eyes shut and baring your teeth as you feel it's hot, putrid breath against your skin. Thick, black saliva drips into the dirt between your feet and burns it like acid, white tendrils of smoke rising from the bubbling pool.
The chittering sound rises again, like a demonic chorus of cicadas. Distantly, you realize the effect is created by all of those throats babbling at once. You find yourself too breathless to scream as it's clumsy teeth try to find purchase in the flesh of your calf, only succeeding in lightly scratching and slobbering all over it. Perhaps in frustration, its crying slowly rises in pitch, high and keening.
Then, there is another, quieter sound, that cuts the wailing short. It is soft like a whip cutting through the air before it cracks, like the hiss of lightning parting the sky before the thunder of it crashing back together. Crashing like the quivering weight that descends upon your lower body as the monster inexplicably falls to pieces at your feet. You blink owlishly at the dismantled pile of flesh, hardly daring to believe that it is truly dead, even as its quivering breaths grow still.
Your legs throb under the lifeless weight of it. It is impossible to drag yourself out from under it with your one good arm, so you resort to wiggling on your back in the dirt, removing yourself inch by excruciating inch. You haven't yet had the time, nor the prescence of mind to worry about what lurking horror might have so effortlessly ended the dead thing that pins you to the dirt. That mystery is soon solved for you when a familiar voice comes out of the dark behind you.
"Tch. Pathetic."
You cease your struggles and crane your neck back, pressing the back of your head into the dirt to meet Sukuna's garnet gaze. He leans against a tree, as if he can't be bothered to hold himself up, looking only vaguely interested in the scene before him.Â
"Me, pathetic?" You spit, redoubling your efforts to writhe out from under the dead thing. "Was I not easy enough to kill? You had to sic your pet on me?" The thought had only now occurred to you, that Sukuna had unleashed this thing on you, but the notion already has your blood boiling with rage.
Sukuna snorts, "Not mine." His eyes leave you in favor of examining the corpse. "Hm. A grade two, this one," he mutters.
Your eyes follow his and you notice a jagged, black fang, about the length of your outstretched hand, lying in the dirt by your hip. Glancing back to ensure his eyes are still focused on the monster, you stretch out your good arm and wrap your fingers around it. The edges bite into your fingers, but you clutch it like a lifeline, headless of the pain.Â
"Well, do you intend to finish the job, or are you just going to stand there, blabbering nonsense?" You sneer, craning your neck to look up at him.Â
His eyes snap back to yours and he smirks, lazily peeling himself away from the tree and stepping towards you. "So eager to die, arent you?"
He lifts the bulk of dead flesh away from you with one hand as he hooks another into the pit of your injured arm and drags you to your feet.
Gritting your teeth, you swing your good arm, arcing your makeshift weapon to catch him in the back, but he snatches your wrist away with yet another arm. Now, you are leaning awkwardly against his chest as he supports most of your weight. You legs are not as useful as you might have hoped. They burn painfully and buckle at the knees as the blood rushes back to your cramping muscles.Â
He eyes the monster's tooth in your hand with mild interest. "You want to hurt me with that?" He asks with a mean grin. "Go ahead."
With that he lets go of you and takes a step back. You cry out in frustration as your traitorous legs buckle underneath you and you land on your knees at his feet. He throws his head back and laughs as you snarl up at him and swing your makeshift weapon at his legs, which dodge your clumsy blows effortlessly.Â
"For weeks you lived in peace with me and now all these theatrics, for what reason?" He muses as he steps this way and that to avoid your rageful attacks. It doesn't take long for him to grow bored of this game, and you are taken aback when he sinks to his knees in front of you. Even so, he towers over you so that you have to hyperextend your neck to see his face. His lower set of hands snatch you up around the waist while the upper pain pin your arms to your sides. You grunt at the pain in your broken wrist, but he takes no notice.
"I asked you a question," he snarls, holding you at eye level.Â
He huffs when you only writhe in his grip and scream in his face until your throat is raw and you are too breathless to continue.
"Fucking feral little rat," he mutters. "Is it because I touched your leg?" He asks, eyes dragging the length of your body.Â
You scoff. Of course it wasn't just that it's...
"Are you throwing a tantrum because I didn't ask permission? Hm? And what was the plan? Where will you go?" He cuts off your thoughts by echoing your own thinking from earlier. It has you subconsciously biting into your cheek hard enough to draw blood. Infuriating.
He smirks. "Just a spoiled little princess playing at running away. Well. Time to grow up, little girl, and realize that you will always belong to a man. Before, you belonged to your bitch of a father, and now, you belong to me."
No longer able to hold in your rage you shreik and slam your head forward in an attempt to split his smirking lips. Of course, he leans away and you only succeed in tossing your hair, drawing another cackle from his mouth.Â
"You want to hurt me? Try, brat," he bellows to be heard over your shreiking as he presses his forehead against yours hard enough to bruise. The moment he releases your good arm you sink the oversized canine into his temple and drag it down, flaying his cheek. A second swing and his larger, upper eye is reduced to a wobbling jelly running into the bleeding wound. Slick with gore, the tooth drops from your hand and Sukuna slams you down on your back with enough force to steal the air out of your lungs.Â
Then he is folded over you, hand on your jaw tilting your gaze to his wounded face. "Look at me," he instructs and your stomach lurches as the flesh bubbles and warps. Then it is takes its old, unmarred shape, as new and smooth as ever. You stare at it, blinking as if that brief interruption of sight might return it to ruin, as it was seconds ago. As if to dispel your disbelief another of his hands grasp your broken wrist, lifting your hand so that your fingertips brush his new skin. At the same instant, your injured joint transforms the same way his wounds had until it is new and free of pain.
Speechless you stare at your hand on his cheek until you realize that he is no longer holding it there. He leans in until his lips are nearly brushing your ear. "I can touch you however I like, whenever I like," he says, slipping a hand from your waist to trace the angle of your hip bone and the curve of your outer thigh through your ruined kimono. "I can break you and mend you, break you and mend you and never, ever let you die." His hand slips from your jaw to your throat where he squeezes briefly before, suddenly, he hauls himself off of you.
"So, brat," he says, standing over you haloed in the pink light of dawn, "if you are ever so lucky as to have me touch you again, try not to overreact."
All you seem to be able to do is slide your eyes stupidly from your healed wrist to his unblemished face until all the breath decides to leave your lungs at once. The sky, blushing with dawn and tattooed with skeletal branches, fades to black.
...
Emika, grinning, face tilted toward the dappled sunlight, laughter bubbling out of her throat. It is a musical sound until it changes, distorts into a horrible chittering, vacous and reptilian. Her mouth opens, impossibly wide, a poisonous womb that delivers a wailing many-faced blackness that swallows the world. Closer, the newborn horror leans in until all you can see is a single wet, red maw screaming its hunger and eager to feed on you. It is made of hunger and fear. Its tongue lolls out and begins to twist and warp. It pales and changes shape, grows four garnet eyes, a tattooed jaw, a laughing mouth. Sukuna's face leaning close to yours. "Look at me," he says, surrounding you, a universe that leaves you no choice. He is still laughing when he tilts away, falling out of orbit as gravity pulls your back into the dirt. He is replaced by a robin's egg sky seen in patches through the green leaves of spring.
Emika's face glides into view, a smiling autumn moon in the Spring sky.
Her bamboo sword taps your neck.
"Dead," she says.
Dead like the warrior she once daydreamed of being, with a katana on her back and a pretty servant girl at her side.
"Dead." She smiles, haloed in sunlight.
Your eyes blink open. Even as the nightmare fades you realize it holds too many parallels to waking life for comfort. Finding yourself suspended above the ground in an unfamiliar position, your body jerks, your legs inadvertently tightening around Sukuna's waist. He is carrying you like a child on his hip, his lower arm hooked under your backside while his upper one supports your back. Your chin rests over his shoulder, your cheek pressed into his neck. Finding this abhorrent, you squirm weakly.
"I can walk now," you mutter, but you are so tired. Your eyelids, leaden.Â
"Walking has caused you enough trouble, wouldn't you say?" He chuckles, a sound that is becoming increasingly annoying.Â
In any case, the dead weight of your body against his is enough to refute your claim.Â
Your eyes flutter closed, head lolling against his neck. He smells of smoke, blood and earth and he is warm against you. The effect is like a sleeping tincture.
"I want to know," you mutter against his skin as you struggle against your rapidly retreating consciousness. "I want to know what is expected of me."
You are too exhausted to think of your statement as an acquiesence, but that is what it is. Sukuna is taking you back to the shrine and you are accepting it. Perhaps that is why he laughs. Your eyes pop open at the hateful sound and you hope that he does not discern the increasing tempo of your heart with the way that your chest is pressed into him. Wouldn't want to give him the satisfaction.
"Expectations," he says. "You can't live without them, hm? How, then, would you rebel?"
You clench your teeth. He is unbearable. You hate him. God, you hate him. But you are just so tired right now.
"I have no expectations of you, rat." He continues after a pause, although he thinks to himself that you are really more of a mouse, at the moment, as you go limp again with sleep.
...
When you wake again, from a long sleep that is blessedly dreamless, there is nothing to greet you but silence and the shrinking light of early evening. You lie for a moment on the futon, staring at the dark grid of ceiling in your chambers.
Under the thinning haze of sleep that still clouds your mind, a flickering flame of rage persists. When you look down at yourself, filthy with mud, blood, and mystery secretions from whatever that thing in the forest was, it grows brighter. Cast off and forgotten like a broken doll. You flex your healed wrist. Why does it make you even angrier?
I have no expectationsÂ
You tear off your kimono and toss it aside, fuming.
Rat.
You tear the linens, ruined by your dirtiness, off of your futon and thrust them away to join your clothing on the floor.
"Maybe I will go around naked, then," you fume, stomping towards the door, but you stop there, losing your nerve. "Bet you wouldn't expect that. Bet you would find that you have some expectations after all."
spoiled little princess
"Maybe I will go around like this is my home and you are an unwanted guest," you hiss into the silence.
time to grow up and realize you will always belong to a man
You retrieve your dirty kimono and shrug into it, gathering the fabric loosely around your chest with one hand while you rip something clean out of the wardrobe with the other. The shoji door slams against the doorframe as you storm out of the room not bothering to close it.Â
now you belong to me
Uraume and Baba look up from their work, picking vegetables for dinner in the courtyard as you tear across it without sparing them a glance. You make quite a sight, blood-streaked and furious.Â
"He'll be getting his kicks with that one for quite some time, I'll say... yes," Baba croaks as her milky eyes track your movements.
"Baba!" Uraume scolds.
"It's the truth," Baba crows. "It is!"
...
The steaming water of the hot spring soothes the aching muscles of your legs. This makes encroaching on his territory doubly satisfying, even if he, being a morning bather, in your limited experience - doesn't find out. You close your eyes and hold your breath, sinking to the bottom on your knees. Your fingers rake through the matted mess of your hair, breaking loose the dirt and dried blood. You stay under until your lungs burn and then burst to the surface with a sharp inhalation.Â
"What the fuck do you think you are doing?"
You startle at the sound of Sukuna's voice booming over the soft gurgling of the water. He is standing at the opposite end of the spring, kimono pooled around his feet, hands frozen at his waist in the middle of loosening his hakama.Â
"Whatever I want, since you have no expectations," you retort, having recovered quickly from your surprise.
He snorts. "Alright."
You glare at each other through the rising steam.
You are the first to avert your eyes when Sukuna resumes undressing, unceremoniously dropping his hakama.Â
Your back is turned and you make a point of staying submerged to the shoulders as you make your way to the edge of the pool. You movements increase in urgency, heart thumping faster as you hear him splash into the water behind you. Unwilling to let him see your bare skin, you pull your clean kimono into the water and put it on while still submerged.Â
When you drag yourself over the lip of the pool in your dripping robes, he is laughing. Your skin erupts in goose flesh that cannot be entirely attributed to your soaked clothes and the chill in the air. Although it pisses you off to no end, you try to at least appear unperturbed. Chin held high, you make it a point not to look at him as you march back toward the shrine, as if he is beneath your notice. You hope he feels it.
"Come here, rat."Â
You pause, your back still turned to him.
"I said, come here." He repeats.
Vacillating between the desire to defy him and the desire to seem unafraid, you settle on the latter and make your way back to the water's edge. There is a deliberate slowness in your movements, to show that you are in no hurry to obey him.
Sitting on the lip of the pool, you let your calves dangle over the edge, lazily treading water.Â
"What do you want?" you hiss, meeting his crimson gaze.

Forty-eight hours
Hour One
A missed call shouldn't have been enough to raise an alarm, but his gut instantly told him something was wrong. And yet he tried his best to remain calm â stepped out onto the street and made his way to the bus stop where you should've been dropped off, glancing into convenience stores just in case, hopeful that the bus was just running a little late. But when the bus you would've taken showed up â allowing Eren some time to sigh in relief and shake his head at his own presumptions â and you were nowhere to be found among the few people to scatter onto the sidewalk, it only confirmed that previous gut feeling.
Hour Two
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
There's a stiffness to Eren's breathing that makes the process more painful than its intended effects â his lungs feel too big for his ribs, which seem to be pressing them against his heart, pushing his brain into hyperactivity to keep him from imploding.
Where does he even start? Where should he even go?
If there's a proper protocol to follow to find you, he's no idea of it and he's strangely aware that his anxiety might lead him in the wrong direction when there's so much he has to do â so many places he has to be â at once. It's infuriatingly difficult to not have a cool head when you really need it. Â
He didn't think to bring his car â perhaps it's for the best, considering his vision continues to blur and it's not a sign of good condition to hear your own frantic heartbeat pounding in your ears.Â
His eyes anxiously scan the faces of every person in his path. Paired with his dazed footing and the sick expression on his face revived every couple of minutes from the nausea stemming from some sort of sensed doom that he continuously swats away, there hasn't been a shortage of odd looks and aversions since he ventured into the dark streets in hopes to find you fine and well out of thin air.
It's been too long to dismiss as a casualty since his calls stopped going through, and yet he insists on redialing your number each time he's met with the automated message that only further fuels his dreadful symptoms, hopeful that your voice will reach his ears again, for that comforting sound to put an end to the infernal crescendo of his insides.Â
Just as he's about to redial once more, his phone starts buzzing first, and for a split second his body is at peace and his heart soothed in the spare moment that it takes for him to accept the call and bring the phone to his ear.Â
âHave you heard from her yet?âÂ
The voice on the other end causes his stomach to plummet to his feet for what feels like the tenth time tonight.
It takes a moment for his brain to assimilate that it's not you on the other end and another for him to hate himself for not checking who was calling and stupidly spit a response to an Armin who has no fault in anything, especially for not being you.
Armin, as understanding as ever and assuming the more collected role for Eren's sake, dismisses the frustrated tone in his friend's voice, fully aware it's nothing personal.Â
âThe security guard says she left a little over an hour ago and Mika called me a minute ago and said she hasn't been home. Are you sure she wasn't going to make any stops on the way?âÂ
âNo, Armin, she would've told me. She would've come here first or she would've at least texted me.â Eren's voice cracks. âSomething is wrong.âÂ
The weakness in Eren's voice is enough to fracture Armin's composure for a fraction of a second.
âLet's go to Levi.â
Hour Three
Being in the police station feels more reassuring than Eren would've imagined. At least this means he's doing something â and something right, at that â and the drive over spared him enough time to ease his nerves, even just a little, as he continued to repeat inwardly to himself that everything is going to be fine.Â
Time is everything and frankly, he can't help but feel a bit dumb for not thinking about getting some help from Levi in the first place. He'll find out what's going on â if there was an accident, if you got mugged and that's why no calls go through, or even if your bus broke down and that's why he hasn't seen you when he should have by now. Even if it turns out to be a misunderstanding, better to cause a scene than to sit on his hands. Though three hours without any sign to say otherwise can't be a misunderstanding.Â
Eren hunches over, resting his forehead on the edge of Levi's desk, not minding one bit as it digs a dent into his skin. His knee bounces every couple of minutes as he and Armin wait for Levi to get back to them.Â
âEren Jaeger?âÂ
He looks up to find a tall blond man instead of Levi.Â
âYes?âÂ
âI'm Captain Erwin Smith. Come this way please.âÂ
Eren stands to follow the man's lead, only sparing a nervous glance to Armin, who replies with a comforting one from his seat, only morphing into a more accurate depiction of his worry once Eren turns his back to him.
âWhere's Levi?âÂ
Eren's eyes wander the barren space he's been led into. Nothing but a table and a pair of chairs set opposite of each other.Â
âHe'll be here in a moment. I just want to ask you some more questions about the missing person's report you're filing.âÂ
âOf course.â
Doing his best to hold in his exasperation at the ticking clock in his head, he dutifully replies to every question he's already answered for Levi when he first walked into the station â what made him come to the station, his relation to you, your description, what happened before he lost contact with you, amongst other basic things to paint a picture of the situation.
âWas there ever any trouble in your relationship?â Erwin asks.
Eren's brow furrows.
âWhat do you mean?âÂ
âI'm asking if there was any indication that your girlfriend,â he makes a vague motion with his hands as he reads your name from the folder in his hands, âmightâve been upset with the relationship. Did you ever argue or have any trouble? Perhaps something in the past few days? Or ever?âÂ
Eren hardens his jaw in an attempt to remain calm. He knew he'd have to spend a while at the station, answering questions more than once â as frustrating as the lengthy process could be, he expected that much.Â
Erwin's tone has remained neutral for the entirety of the questioning, and it's only natural to want to rule out any immediate suspects, but it doesn't make the implication of the captain's words any less offensive and borderline cruel.Â
âNo,â Eren chokes out, horrified by the mere idea that either of you would walk away without warning. That isn't you.Â
âSo no reason for her to break off contact with you.â
âShe didn't break off contact,â Eren spits, growing heavily frustrated at the sudden turn of events. âWe were supposed to meet, she was on her way already. I saw her just this morning and she called me first to tell me she was coming home.â
âMaybe she only said that to throw you off?â
âWhat are you trying to say?â
âJust tell me what you might think,â Erwin replies, voice stern. âYou say it's only been three hours since you last heard from her but she's a mentally stable, healthy adult. Unless she has any conditions that could put herself or others in danger, chances are she's safe and sound somewhere and this is all a misunderstanding. Was there anything suspicious or weird about her?â
Eren's shake of his head grows more and more frustrated as Erwin does little to conceal his skepticism, which only shapes as a misunderstanding from Eren's increasingly impatient point of view.
âWhat's suspicious and weird is that she never made it to our date at all and it's been three hours and I haven't gotten a single word from her.â
Eren's expression is one of pleading, yet Erwin's remains neutral and made of marble.
âAnd it's not like that,â Eren murmurs. âI was going to ask her to live with me tonight. She called me after she left work to tell me she was on her way.â Eren can feel his heartbeat start to pick up as his ribcage begins to close in on his lungs once more as more anxious words continue to spill from his mouth in increasing pace and volume. âShe told me she had news and that she loves me. Why would she tell me that if anything was wrong? Why would she say that if she wasn't going to make it to our date?â The crack in his voice comes at the same time as the stinging sensation behind his eyes and the uncomfortable tickle in his nose. âI was making dinner for us. I had this whole thing planned. I wanted to surprise her with all her favorite food and the pictures from the new apartment. I wasn't going to tell her about the pink bathtub because I want it to be a surprise when we move in. SheâŚâ He curls against the table, hands gripping his hair in frustration, pulling at the strands to make sure he still feels something because there are just too many sensations overwhelming him as he tries to get through to the man in front of him. âShe really wants a pink bathtub.âÂ
Eren doesn't lift his gaze, just remains quiet and unmoving until he catches a flicker of movement in front of him. It's only when he takes the tissue offered by Erwin that he becomes aware of the tears streaming down his face.Â
Levi nearly had a heart attack when he first caught eye of Eren's and Armin's familiar faces walking into the police station. The frantic green eyes and anxious expressions made it clear something awful had happened and hot flashes of searing dread burned inside his stomach. That is until nobody pronounced his niece's name. After that, the flame of pain withered to ashes of guilt, consuming him from the inside in such a manner that it was hard to face his niece's friends knowing he'd felt relief it wasn't his family who'd been affected tonight.Â
Levi's known Eren since he was a kid â a bit childish and whiny, but ultimately a decent man with a kind heart. It's been a pleasure watching him grow up and knowing he's remained a good friend to his niece.Â
Levi's only met you once. It was at Jean and Mikasa's engagement party earlier this year. If Jean and Mikasa were the happiest couple there, you and Eren were a close second. It was easy to know just how much he adored you, and how attached you were to him. Eren was rarely in a dark place, but next to you his smile was blinding.Â
After finding out Erwin conducted the interrogation to rule out a possible runaway case â and how he did it â he still hadn't ridden himself of enough guilt to apologize for making the situation more stressful, no matter what the rules say.Â
It's no secret some sudden disappearances hold more danger than others. An abducted child, an older person with dementia, a mentally and emotionally unstable person who's looking to cause harm to others or themselves â they demand a higher sense of urgency than logging the missing person into the system and following up when there's nothing more pressing on the police's plate.
The desperation consuming Eren's features when Levi finally walks into the interrogation room is enough to kick off his own instincts.Â
It's upon Levi's insistence that patrols are dispatched immediately.Â
Hour Five
When a loved one's safety is on the line, any efforts from authorities never seem to be enough and yet one remains oddly hopeful that the people with a proper protocol should know how to better handle situations that leave one frantic and lost.Â
Calls to the nearest hospitals, pings from cellphone towers, two patrols dispatched to the last known location and its surroundings, questions to potential witnesses who have nothing to report or are rather too invested to go back to whatever keeps their attention inside to provide some detailed tips, one patrol leaving because of a nearby break-in and the remaining one left with nothing more to go off of than one grainy clip of CCTV footage that shows your figure walking down the street, and a second clip from a convenience store's outside surveillance camera where you don't show up at all, but the lack of witnesses lead to nothing in between.Â
Keeping up the search when there's been nothing gained starts proving to be more difficult when obstacles continue to pile on. Aside from the growing boredom of those in police cars from the lack of fresh information to keep them motivated, the heavy clouds that hover over everyone's head threatens for the case to soon be abandoned for the night.Â
Hour Eight
Levi is hesitant to leave. But with no leads â no CCTV footage, no unknown numbers blinking on Eren's screen, no mother, an estranged father, no sign of a struggle at the last known location, and so much yet so little more â there isn't much he has to do than drive back with the pair of worried men to the station for more questioning in case of foul play, while constantly eyeing his notifications for any incoming messages on an assault victim found in an alley not too far away from where your phone was last still on.
Eren refuses to leave. Despite Levi's efforts to persuade him that going back to the station was necessary, knowing he was so close to where you'd last been was enough for Eren to stand his ground. Getting into Levi's car means going back miles worth of steps. It means straying from what feels so much like the right path already. And as ridiculous and futile as it is with no leads, it means losing his grip on something much more solid.Â
How easy it would be if a last known location means he can find you just by looking behind a tree or having someone point and say âyes, she's right thereâ.Â
So when Levi makes another plea for Eren to come back with him â he doesn't mention what for to not stir any more nerves â and Eren says no while steering himself down the block for what feels like his hundredth recon of the area â just in case you really were behind that tree in the small playground all along, playing a nasty prank on him â Levi chooses to go back to all the nearby twenty-four hour convenience stores one last time before the downpour begins.Â
Armin gives Levi a grateful nod before lightly jogging to catch up with Eren, who's already turning onto the next street.Â
âYou can go,â Eren calls over his shoulder after catching a glimpse of his friend's blond hair beside him. âI'll keep looking by myself. Besides, it's gonna rain soon. You'll get wet.âÂ
âWhat about you?â Armin looks down at his friend's bare arms. âYou don't even have a jacket.âÂ
Eren looks down at his sides, like he just noticed his lack of a coat. He could've sworn he had one on him when he walked out his apartment. You would've been upset with him otherwise, that small pout forming on your lips while your brows are weighed down with disappointment.Â
The instant of amusement he feels is quickly consumed by the ache of why he's out on the street with no jacket to begin with.Â
The food must be cold by now. He'll have to heat it all up once you're back home.
Light raindrops brush against his skin with a small gust of wind.Â
You're still not behind the tree.
It's nearly half past two in the morning. Any civilians with useful information have been asleep for hours, and any passers-by would've reported anything had they seen it, Armin thinks.Â
It's chilling to walk down streets so quiet and empty, with the only reminder that this isn't an alternate universe being the sparse cars that drive by. Surely the people inside might find it strange to see the pair walking up and down the streets, turning, looking, flashing their phones to make out shapes in the dark.
The tickle of rain on skin is no longer, but the temperature continues to drop.Â
Armin takes on one side of the street while Eren tackles the other. He receives a polite nod from the security guard of a small daycare center, who fails to conceal his look of pity. Levi interviewed him around an hour ago, so he has to know what's going on.Â
Armin averts his gaze, his cheeks burning at the thought of some stranger pitying him and his friend when everything is going to be just fine.Â
The rain starts up again. Eren isn't around anymore. With one quick scan of the street, Armin spots him rounding the corner to the next street â pace firm but anxious. He's quick to follow.Â
By the time Armin catches up, the raindrops have grown in size, a reliable sign that this time, it's for real.Â
âEren,â Armin calls him carefully.
Eren continues walking, flashing a light behind a dumpster in a narrow alley between a family restaurant and a bookstore.Â
âEren,â Armin calls him a bit more firmly to get his attention, but to no avail.Â
With brows knit more in desperation than concern, Armin quickens his pace and pulls Eren by the shoulder just before he rounds the corner to the next street.Â
âEren!â
âWhat?âÂ
The anger and volume in Eren's voice shrinks Armin in his place for a brief moment.Â
Embarrassed by his own reaction, Eren exhales an apology. But his face hardens once more when Armin suggests it's time to go home.
Armin steps back, surprised to have caught a swear word from his best friend among the words he spits back in a negative response.Â
But when Eren turns, ready to resume his search, Armin pulls at him again.
âEren, stop!â he half-yells, quickly readjusting his volume before speaking again to not cause any disturbances to sleeping strangers.
âYou don't want to pick a fight with me Armin, I'm warning you,â Eren's voice grows low, but still reaches Armin with the same anger and menace. Â
Eren harshly pulls away and continues to storm down the next street, leaving Armin to stumble behind.Â
The rain is heavy enough now to spot the pavement faster than it takes for each drop to dry.Â
âWe need to go back, we aren't going to find her like this,â Armin calls after him. His hands do little to shield himself from the rain. Thankfully, Armin thought to bring a jacket along but it won't do much for either of them when it's bound to be sopping wet in just a few minutes.Â
Eren's shirt is already clinging to his skin in large patches down his back, and yet he continues walking with purpose down the street.Â
Armin's shivering now under his jacket as he looks around to gather his surroundings. This street isn't far from the office. It's poorly lit which, paired with the rain, is best explored in daylight. There's a single street lamp that's meant to illuminate the area at night, but it's been broken for months and either nobody has reported it, or laziness has kept it from being repaired.Â
âCome on,â Armin insists, lightly jogging now and losing his breath under the cold shower as he tries to keep up with Eren, who still refuses to listen. âWe'll come back in the morning! You need to get some rest if you're going to keep looking! I'll come with you, okay? But we need to go!â
Armin suddenly crashes into Eren's chest as the latter abruptly turns around in a sudden fit of pure rage.Â
âI already told you I'm not fucking leaving!âÂ
Armin stumbles back, teeth chattering, muscles drooping from his wet clothes and vision blurred by the heavy rain.Â
âYou can leave if you want to! That's what the fucking police is doing! Just go already! But I'm staying because I care! I don't give a fuck about the rain, I'm going to find her!â
Eren's words pierce through Armin's chest, and the next moment he's tackling Eren to the ground. It's not so much to stop him from leaving this time, but out of indignation.Â
Eren falls on his ass with a wet thud, his palms painfully pounding onto the pavement as Armin falls on top of him, grabbing a fistful of his shirt in his hands.
âYou think I don't care? Why do you think I'm here, you idiot?â Armin yells in Eren's face. Had the pouring rain not been a factor, he would've been red in the face. But had the rain not been there, Eren also would've easily seen the tears streaming down Armin's face, and that would've taken away from his blue glare.Â
âShe's my best friend! I'm just as worried about her as you are! You can't decide you're the only one affected by this! That only makes you a jerk and you're not!âÂ
Eren is tense all over as he holds Armin's surprisingly threatening glare. His chest heaves as a twinge of guilt surges inside of him at his friend's pointed remarks. The stiff breathing makes its return.
âBut we have to go,â Armin's voice softens â it cracks and begs.Â
And Eren breaks down in sobs. His scraped palms come to his face, aggressively digging the heels against his eyes as if to force his tears back in while his shoulders tremble in cold, grief and guilt.Â
âYou don't understand!â he cries, his shirt still crumpled under Armin's grip. âI fucked up, Armin. This is all my fault!â
Unsure of how to react to this abrupt change in attitude, Armin remains frozen save for his teeth, which continue to chatter under the deafening rain.
âI was supposed to pick her up. I'm never late,â Eren hiccups. âBut I didn't come today and now I don't know where she is! It was me, Armin! I did this! This is my fault!âÂ
âEren,â Armin murmurs gently, eyebrows upturned in sympathy as he finally softens his hold on his friend.Â
âI can't find her and I don't know if she's hurt or scared or ifâŚ,â Eren's words drown in another wave of sore sobs, his lips refusing to let the thought of the worst to escape as a spoken word â to think that someone might have caused you harm and that's what's kept you tonight.Â
âI need her to be okay,â he whimpers finally, lips trembling as his body begins to react to the harsh cold surrounding him. âWhere is she, Armin?â
It takes a while for Armin to gather his thoughts and catch up to the workings of Eren's mind from this hellish night.Â
He often leaves the office with you, stays behind some evenings when he notices you're close to wrapping up your work and can ride the elevator together. Sometimes even accepts Eren's offer for a ride when he's too tired to deal with the overwhelming setting of public transportation â tired enough to not mind third-wheeling for a short while. If the last place your phone was turned on was before you even had a chance to take a bus, surely he could've done something to prevent this mess too. Why didn't he think to stay behind today, too?
âIt's not your fault,â Armin finally says, his voice just barely audible amidst the rain and thunder. He blinks up from the ground to his friend. âAnd we don't know what happened. We'll try the hospitals again later, we'll keep calling her in the meantime. We have Levi helping us, right?â
Eren blinks back at him, slowly gathering that Armin is trying to encourage him through reassurances, and finally nods in response as he does his best to ignore the tight lump in his throat.Â
âIt's like three in the morning, Eren. I'm not asking you to stop. But we can't keep going like this.â He motions vaguely toward the incessant rain from above and the wet clothes sticking to their skin.Â
Armin stands, relieving Eren from his weight as he pushes back his hair with one hand and offers the other to his friend whose reluctance casts a shadow over his usually bright features.Â
Eren trains his gaze on the ground, leaving Armin's helping hand hanging for the while longer it takes for him to convince himself that Armin is right and this doesn't mean he's failing you.Â
Finally, Eren accepts his friend's hand, who hoists him up just as they both spot Levi's car pulling into the street from the farthest corner.Â
Armin motions for Eren to follow him toward the car, to which he responds with a weak nod. But just a couple of steps in, something crunches and gets caught under his shoe. Naturally, he looks down, forgetting the deluge falling over him at the moment to frown at the foreign object.Â
Armin glances over his shoulder, sensing his absence, and turns around fully when he realizes Eren is kneeling on the ground, cautiously picking something from the ground that ultimately dangles from his fingers once it's fully suspended in the air.Â
Armin retraces his steps, kneeling next to his friend to find his face pallid, and green eyes wide with fear as he stares at the broken chain between his fingers, from which hangs an angel cast in silver with a broken wing.Â
His features contort in horrified realization. It's almost ridiculous to turn to Eren for confirmation of what he already knows and can already begin to imagine. But when he does, the latter is already hunched over in the opposite direction, emptying his stomach onto the wet pavement while the nearing lights from Levi's car come to blind him.
Hour Fifteen
Mikasa, Jean, and Sasha step into the elevator wordlessly, the only sounds on the way to Eren's floor being the inevitable rustles from the plastic bags with food in Mikasa's hands.Â
Jean offered to take them, but Mikasa insisted she'd hold onto them. Maybe it's because of her cold hands, but it might also be because she needs something to help keep her grounded â literally; she feels as though she might float away otherwise. Because if anyone were to ask her, nothing has felt real since last night after Armin's call.Â
The elevatorâs hum ceases as it comes to a gentle stop and the doors slide open.Â
The same somber silence continues to hover between the trio as they mechanically walk down the hall to Eren's door. Jean takes out his copy of the key from his jeans pocket and pushes the door wide open, gesturing for the girls to enter first before quietly closing the door behind them.
Spare keys aren't rare between them. It was chain reaction that stemmed from Eren's father's passing. Everyone wanted to make sure he was okay. The rest is history.Â
âIn case of emergency.â
âCan you please water my plants while I'm gone?âÂ
âCan you check something for me?â
âI'm really sick, just let yourself in.â
âJust keep it.â
Jean's copy has rarely been used. In fact, not many of them have made use of Eren's key once he started dating. Not that it's been a dramatic change, but now there's not much need to be wary of barging in on something they'll all laugh about later. And today, after Eren passed out on the street in the rain, it seems crucial to brush the dust off an old habit for their friend's sake.
The trio is careful not to make any excess noise â Eren might still be sleeping â, but the further they venture into the apartment, they realize their efforts are in vain.Â
They expected Eren to be lying on the sofa where Jean and Armin had so carefully helped him settle down, still fast asleep considering it's only been a few hours since. Although Eren's sudden nausea was a mere reaction to finding the necklace, Armin still spent a couple more hours watching over him as a precaution while he cleaned up the kitchen and dining area, and quietly left for his apartment to make another round of calls before work.Â
They're met with the view of their friend bustling around his work area in a corner of the living room, his brow furrowed and eyes laser focused as he refills the ink tanks on his printer. Stacks of missing person's posters cover his desk with a handful of faded ones having been scattered and crumpled on the floor as evidence of the ink shortage he's tending to. Your face occupies nearly the entirety of his immediate view, which is why a single glance is enough to distract him from his task that he doesn't notice his friends present in his apartment, nor when the ink begins to leak.
At the instinctive curse word that leaves him in a frustrated huff, Jean rushes over to help him.Â
âI'll handle this,â he assures Eren, who only blinks in surprise as he realizes he's not alone.Â
Mikasa and Sasha walk over to him unsure of whether a hug is appropriate as a greeting. In the end, they choose to speak the words instead.Â
Sasha leaves the conversation in exchange for helping Jean clean up the spilled ink. An irregular blob-shaped stain is left behind on the ash gray wood.Â
âAre youâ How's your stomach?â Mikasa asks.Â
An uneasy grimace makes its way onto Eren's face.
âIt's fine. It was just⌠Yeah.â He shrugs it off, unsure of how to properly explain the incident without triggering more discomfort.Â
Mikasa nods in understanding.Â
âArmin said you're going back to the police station later.â
Eren huffs at a humorless puff of air from his nose.Â
âYeah. More questioning,â Eren replies, his head continuously shaking in disbelief, to which Mikasa frowns.
âWhat's wrong?âÂ
It takes Eren a couple of tries to let the words out, his mouth opening and closing with hesitancy.Â
âThey all left, Mika,â he softly murmurs, a hint of helplessness infecting his fragile voice, that births an ache in Mikasa's chest. âNobody could say anything and they got bored. What kind of excuse is that?âÂ
Mikasa drops her gaze to her shoes, submitting before the hurt and impotence Eren's words awake in her.Â
Then she shakes her head briefly, recalling a good thing.Â
âLevi's on the case⌠and there's evidence for foul play now, there's a lead,â she says, trying her hardest to appear more hopeful at each thing on her list. âHe'll find her, Eren. This'll just be nothing but a bad memory soon.âÂ
She smiles, but it comes out sad from the red that tints her waterline.Â
Eren doesn't have the energy to try to appear cheerful from her encouragement, and limits himself to a nod.Â
âEren, how long have you been up?â Sasha asks with concern from his desk, where her eyes scan over his computer screen and the stacks of paper with your face printed front and center.Â
âA few hours?â Eren replies with a shrug, to which everyone else exchanges concerned glances.
Jean breaks the silence with a loud clap, refusing to make way for any awkwardness in the air.Â
âWe brought you some food, buddy. Come on, let's eat.âÂ
Sasha eagerly nods, her enthusiasm a bit too stiff it almost seems rehearsed, as she encourages him to follow them to the dining table.
Eren allows himself to be tugged along for a couple of steps before he tethers himself to his spot for a moment and then decidedly takes a step back under everyone's puzzled expressions.Â
âI'm not really hungry,â he murmurs, shaking his head.
âAre you sure?â Mikasa gently asks.
âWe got your favorite soup,â Jean smiles, though Eren is too busy staring at a blank point to notice. âMinestrone.â
âExtra parmesan,â Sasha adds.
âIt's fine.â Eren assures them with a forced smile. âYou guys eat. I have a lot of things to do.âÂ
âWell, you can't do them on an empty stomach. Let's eat and then we'll go through your to-do list together,â Jean insists.
âYeah,â Mikasa agrees, shooting a grateful smile to her fiancĂŠ. âJean can drive you to the station after breakfast and Sasha and I can handle the rest.â
Every offer is sensible and comforting, but Eren still refuses. He can't eat, not when you still haven't come home.Â
âNoâŚâ his voice trembles ever so slightly as his eyes wander around the room, as if looking for an excuse. He ultimately makes his way back to his desk, where the stacks of posters await him. âI'll just head out now. I'm gonna hand some of these out before going to the station.â
The rejected trio exchange another round of anxious, meaningful looks. Mikasa's the first to break away from the group to join Eren in gathering a stack of flyers and a roll of tape from the black metal organizer on his desk.
As her hands roam around the surface of the ash gray wood, the jewel on her finger catches the sunlight peeking through the curtains.Â
Eren's movements grow slow as his focus is stolen by the silver engagement ring.Â
Mikasa notices the pause in his movements from the corner of her eye, and looks up at him to assess his status. Eren tears his gaze from her ring â embarrassed â, but not fast enough for it to go unnoticed, nor does he remember to ease his hardened jaw afterwards. He moves in silence and sets a fast pace toward the door, leaving an anguished Mikasa to trail at his heel.Â
Hour Twenty
It takes a handful of hours for Eren to get back home from the station, with a significant reduction to the baggage he left with. The stream of questions would've been fairly simple had he not been charged with so many uneasy feelings as to why he was doing all of it in the first place. It certainly didn't help that he had to face the same people who had simply left this morning. But he has to do things right â even if it means swallowing his anger to contribute with any useful information.
Social media presence, daily routines, bus routes, habits, friends, family situation.
Saying you know someone like the back of your hand is an odd saying, he thinks. He's not that vain to spend lengthy periods of time observing himself. In his case, it suffices to say he simply knows you â all he's done is look at you.Â
He knows your hands quite well. The shape of your fingers, the curves of your knuckles and the warmth of your palms when they latch onto his heartbeat and manipulate it to your will. And now what's been left since last night is a painful cavity. It's all wrong. Your hand should be here, filling his void.Â
The apartment is empty, Jean and Sasha long gone. The plastic bags have been folded into neat triangles and the counter has been cleared. Upon opening the fridge, Eren finds stacks of containers that have been added to those Armin helped put away the previous night from the uncelebrated dinner.Â
He stares at his packed fridge for a long time, any energy to step away vanishing into thin air and leaving him stuck in place, looking straight ahead until he no longer recognizes the shape of anything inside, and he grows numb at the cold air that slowly envelops him.Â
A ring from his pocket is what finally pulls him out of his daze and he's quick to whip the device out and accept the incoming call with pure urgency and no thought.Â
âI'm only assuming you've been too excited to call me to tell me how it went last night,â Carla's playfully accusing tone comes through the speaker.Â
âMom,â Eren pronounces in a voice so soft, yet empty as he only acknowledges it's her, but any word that bounces off his tongue is devoid of meaning until he can speak the name he wants to.
âSo,â Carla's enthusiastic grin is evident through the phone. âWas she thrilled? What did she say?â
Eren's voice fails him.Â
In all the anxiety and chaos, with all the things he's had to do within the last twenty hours, he completely forgot to tell his mother what had happened and that moment is catching up to him now.Â
His lips roll inwards, a habit reserved for when he's feeling shy because of things you say or do, and now has come back because of his lack of words â or rather the will to expel them.
His hand comes up to his hair, his fingers brushing his hair back as he struggles to find his voice.Â
It's only when Eren takes a second too long to reply that a shift in mood can be sensed from Carla's end of the line.
âEren,â she calls him carefully, which only makes the lump in his throat grow. âHoney, what's wrong?â
âMom,â is all Eren can muster, voice cracking as he pushes the word out.
âDid you have a fight? Is everything okay?â Carla's concern amplifies through the speaker, as something rustles in the background, a sign that she's taken on a more alert position.
âYou didn't break up, did you?âÂ
Out of all the things that could've gone wrong last night, Eren wishes that had been it. At least he wouldn't be as helpless. At least he'd know where you are. At least it's something he could reverse.
âNo.âÂ
The word comes out choked, his throat instantly sore for the second time.Â
His monosyllabic replies must be getting to her, because Carla takes a deep breath before trying again.Â
âEren, honey. You have to speak clearly, okay?â Carla's voice grows gentle, as it always has whenever Eren would have trouble speaking his mind. Granted, that's been lost as he got older, but Carla's sweet attention hasn't. âWhat happened?â
Her patient voice finally manages to coax the lodged words from Eren's throat.Â
âI don't know where she is. She's missing.âÂ
Hour Twenty-fourÂ
Rain is bad for detective work. Eren heard about it in a documentary or a podcast, or maybe he read it somewhere â he can't remember. But it supposedly washes away any evidence, making easy cases tricky and difficult cases nearly impossible. Considering the silver angel necklace was found in the midst of the sky falling, it comes as no surprise when he comes home from a casual meet up with Levi at a nearby coffee shop with the news that no DNA or signs of a struggle were found on site after a thorough search in the light of day. The other half of the broken angel wing was found stuck on the edge of a sewer grate, though. Eren would feel any comfort at all if it meant it would lead to something. But at least the necklace can be fixed for when he finds you and this is all over.
The necklace is pretty much a dead end, but it'll remain under the police's hold just in case.Â
Eren has never gone so long without seeing your face. Now that the clock has found its way back to the hour you were supposed to walk through his door, it's unbearable to know that you won't. And still he looks over in its direction every few minutes, expecting you to burst in and throw yourself into his embrace, marking the end to a day-long fever dream.Â
That's probably it. A dream. No, a nightmare. It's nothing but a wicked play of his subconscious â to teach him a lesson on appreciating you more. Maybe to scare him into doing a better job of protecting you. Maybe he's gotten too lax, too careless. After all, the city hasn't been terrorized by any violent crimes in the last few months. But that's no excuse to dismiss the possibility of danger. Right⌠There was a killer last year. Two murders. No suspects. No arrests. And there was a burglary just last night. So what ifâŚ
No.
Eren pulls at his hair, agitated by where his mind is leading him. He pulls hard on the strands, like they're the reins of his thoughts that he needs to redirect onto a less horrifying path.Â
His phone dings as if on cue with a text message.
I'll be there soon, honey. Get some rest, I'll call you tomorrow. I love you.
A tap on the attached file opens up a copy of a plane ticket for the day after tomorrow under the name Carla Jaeger.
His heart feels a tad lighter.Â
It'll help to have his mother around for a few days. He types his gratitude into his phone and presses send.Â
He lets his face fall into his hands as he hunches over his desk.
Everything will be okay, he repeats to himself in his head like a mantra.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Everything will be okay.
Outside, rain starts to fall.Â
Hour Thirty
The rain has been on and off for hours.Â
By the time Eren reconnected with his surroundings, ready to go out and look for clues on his own around the area, the rain was nearly as heavy as it was at three in the morning.Â
He sits by the living room window, watching the downpour. His phone is charging on a wooden stool next to him, taking a break from another round of calls to nearby hospitals to ask for any patients bearing your name. Still no.Â
His stomach has been growling for a while, but any energy he possesses isn't the kind that'll get him off his chair and into the kitchen â it's the kind that's meant to be used to stare out the window and grow numb over any trivial needs.
It's fine, he thinks. It'll pass.Â
Hour Thirty-seven
All five of his friends come through the door a little past seven in the morning, with bags of fresh meals to share.Â
Eren sits down this time, allowing Mikasa to fix him a plate and Connie to pour him a glass of juice.Â
Nobody mentions the dark circles under his eyes, and Eren's gaze is too lost on a blank point to sense the meaningful glances exchanged all around him.Â
There's not much room for conversation. Any sense of normalcy is lost in the thick air. It seems equally wrong to create a lighthearted break for the length of a meal as it is to talk about the empty seat across from Eren when everyone is trying so hard to make sure he's at the very least feeding himself.Â
Eren merely pokes and stirs at his food with his fork the entire time. There's a fresh stack of flyers on his desk that demand more urgency in his eyes than sitting down to eat.Â
His demeanor is easy to read by everyone at the table, yet another round of concerned glances and subtle nods in his direction being tossed around with silent messages.Â
In the end, nobody says a thing and the groups is broken off in pairs to tackle the surrounding neighborhoods.
Hour Forty-fiveÂ
Nobody has called. Not him or the station. As the only person outside of the police to be contacted for any updates, his phone should've rung at least once. But aside from yesterday's encounter with Levi and his visits to the station to see if his presence alone will bring something up, there's been a drought in leads. And despite his determination in making sure every person he passes knows anything, there's still nothing.Â
It's been hours since his stomach has demanded his attention. It's finally reached the point where it's so empty, it's gone numb. His body is running on nothing more than sheer will and water.Â
He should at least try to eat, test if he can hold any food down.Â
The fridge remains packed with food, even more now thanks to what's been gathered from his morning visits.Â
Ever so slowly, with overly cautious movements, he takes out a container, transports it to the counter and peels off the lid. It's from the dinner you were supposed to share two nights ago.Â
His lips tremble, eyebrows upturning for the split second it takes him to grasp back at his composure. An outsider would think he's glaring at his leftovers, disgusted at whatever is inside, completely misunderstanding the mental ordeal he's traversing as he takes several deep breaths.
He pulls out a stool from the breakfast bar, sits down and stares.
Hour Forty-eightÂ
It's been two whole days since Eren has stepped foot in his own bedroom.Â
His feet drag him toward the bed without stopping to flip the light switch. Though the night is cloudy, signaling another shower for tonight, the moonlight still finds its way into the room just enough for his eyes to take in the most basic shapes of his furniture.
He comes to a stop at the foot of the bed, and his gaze zeroes in on the neatly folded white cotton fabric set on the corner. It's the shirt you slept in two nights ago, the one that's the wrong size because it's his and he likes his clothes to be just a bit baggy.Â
It's the shirt he gently tugged off your body to feel your skin pressed against his. The one that you take care in folding even if you're in a rush and even though he'll throw it in the wash anyway.
His fingers slowly reach out to collect the fabric.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
It still smells like you. Just barely â a mere scrap of notes that have faded over the last two days. A mix of vanilla, citrus and a faint trace of eucalyptus fabric softener.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.Â
Inhale. Hold. Exhale.
Breathe, Eren.
It doesn't work. The air is too thick. It gets caught in his throat and forces a choked sob on its way back out.Â
His face contorts in anguish as he falls onto the bed, curled up in an attempt to make himself as small as humanly possible, with your shirt clutched in his hands as the world outside darkens and he simply weeps.

Notes: Tunnel Vision will continue, just not with the same schedule it had before my hiatus. Iâll be adding word count and progress updates in the chapter guide in case you want to keep up with the story in that way (Itâll also give you an estimate of when the next chapter will be posted. I have ideas for some ficlets, which Iâll do my best to post in between TV updates just so I donât leave you all hanging with Eren content. Itâll depend a lot on whether I see any enthusiasm for it or not though (aka comments and reblogs that arenât⌠well⌠empty). In the meantime, thank you for the support and feel free to slip into my ask box to chat :)

Now - JACKSON, WYOMING : 2023
âItâs nice to meet you Ellie.â You hold your hand out across the table to her, offering your own name up in the process, noticing an incredulous look in her eyes as you say it. Of course she doesnât shake it, youâve worked with enough survivors her age to know how they think.Â
She doesnât trust any of this, and you canât blame her. Every single thing sheâs seen since arriving here is too good to be true, sheâs waiting for the other shoe to drop. Thatâs okay, you can be patient. She just needs to learn how to be a kid again. When she makes no attempt to move you pull your hand back, your smile never wavering. Youâve met kids in much worse condition than this, you can work with this.Â
âWhy donât you tell me a little bit about yourself, Ellie.â You set the notebook youâd been writing in back down onto the table, you donât want this to feel like an interrogation for her, it needs to be a conversation or you wonât get any of the information you need.
âLike what?â Sheâs slouched down into the chair, her arms crossed across her chest. She has her defenses up, she has spent her entire life protecting herself, she isnât going to stop just because a stranger offered her a mug of tea. A mug of tea that she has notably not touched.Â
âAnything you want to, or I could ask some specifics if youâd like.â You take a sip of your own tea, hoping it might show her itâs safe. She only hums in response, you decide it might be for the best if you just ask her what you need to know. âLetâs start with a few easy ones, how old are you?âÂ
âWhy do you need to know?âÂ
âWe need to assess your health, what classes youâll be put in, if youâll be needing any feminine products. I promise, anything I ask is for your own good.â Seeing kids like Ellie is a painful reminder of just how lucky your own little ones are, itâs a wonder she made it this far. You canât hold her skepticism against her, her distrust is why sheâs still alive. âWould it help if we brought your father in? Heâs just down the hall with Maria.â You arenât sure why, you typically handle every stray but she had insisted on helping you out today. Sheâd spewed some sort of excuse about how Ellie might need some special attention but as far as you can tell sheâs in the same state that most kids are in when they arrive.Â
âHeâs not my dad.â Sheâs quick to say it, as if itâs a sore subject.Â
âMay I ask his relation to you then?â Maria had told you she arrived with her father, you were told to expect one teenage girl and one man in his fifties.
âHeâs⌠my friend?â She sounds unsure, unsure enough to ring alarm bells in your head.Â
âHoney, are you in a safe situation? We can help you if you need-â She doesnât even let you finish your question before sitting up straighter.
âNo, no, no, gross, itâs not like that, heâs not like that.â The look of disgust on her face brings you immense relief, this world is full of enough horrors for a young woman to face.Â
âOkay, I just wanted to make sure.â Even if she hasnât been through that, she hasnât had it easy, no one has. But thereâs something distinct in her eyes. Loss. Sheâs seen more than enough of it, more than anyone her age should. Her eyes keep darting to the door, her head tilts in that direction every time someone walks by. Sheâs worried about her companion. She doesnât want to lose him too. âI know none of this makes sense, and you have no reason to trust me but I need you to try Ellie. And if I ask you anything you arenât comfortable with then you donât have to answer but I need you to try, please. The faster we finish up here, the faster you can get back to your friend.âÂ
She takes a moment, youâre practically holding your breath when she finally nods.
Perfect, you can work with a nod. You love a nod, a nod is all you need to help this girl.
âLetâs start with your age again.âÂ
âFourteen.â Youâll have to have a menstruation kit sent to whatever house they put her in, most peopleâs cycles start being regular once after a few months in Jackson.
âThank you.â All you get is another nod yet you canât help but smile. âDo you know where you were born?â
âNo.â Her eyes are trained on your shoes, occasionally darting around the room but staying low for the most part.Â
âWhere did you grow up?âÂ
âThe QZ.â The thought makes you sick for several reasons. The last place a child should grow up is the streets of a quarantine zone, even if she was in the FEDRA program it wouldnât have been easy. The thought of any QZ still makes you queasy, even after this long.Â
âWhich one?â Anywhere but Boston.Â
âBoston.â Of course. With your luck she would be. Someoneâs far from home. Â
âFEDRA program?â As terrible as they are, they always keep the kids' vaccinations up to date, one less thing for you to worry about.Â
âMhmm.âÂ
âHow old were you when you left?â
âFourteen.â How the hell did she make it to Jackson all the way from Boston in such a short period of time? Why come to Jackson at all? Thereâs certainly other QZâs between here and there, thereâs probably other settlements too.Â
âCan I ask why you left?â Itâs not a question you need to ask but your stomach is in knots at the mention of the Boston QZ and you canât help yourself.Â
âIâd rather you didnât.â Something flashes across her face, she isnât trying to be rude, she simply doesnât want to talk about it.Â
âThatâs fine.â You donât need to worry about it. She doesnât know him. Thereâs no reason for her to know him. QZâs house hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Thereâs no reason to spiral over nothing. âDo you have any allergies that youâre aware of?â
âNope.â She makes a popping sound on the âPâ as she leans back in the chair, trying to look relaxed despite how on edge she still is. You decide not to put anymore pressure on her, it wonât do you any good.Â
âHow are you feeling physically? Any symptoms of illness?â
âLike infection?â You have to stifle a laugh, if she was infected the two of you certainly wouldnât be sitting here right now.Â
âIâm not worried about that, I mean something more like a runny nose or a cough.â
âOh. No.âÂ
âAny skills in particular youâd like to learn? Our school system is a little less traditional than what you probably had with FEDRA.â
âI like science.â She sits up a bit, good, youâve found something that piques her interest.Â
âThen I will make sure youâre enrolled in some science classes. But I meant skills like agriculture, construction, or veterinary care. Something you could learn about that interests you. You wonât be asked to help out around town until youâre sixteen but we like to let you explore different things to see what you like-â
âCould I learn how to shoot a gun?â She leans forward before you can finish your thought.Â
âYou could apprentice some of the hunters, we could also have you trained for patrol and scavenging which involves gun safety and training courses. Youâre a bit young for those but Iâm sure I could â
âReally?â You can tell by the inflection in her voice that she still doesnât trust you entirely, even if sheâs excited.
âOf course, youâll probably be the youngest student in the training class but Iâm sure you can handle it.â She needs something good in her life. You want to protect everyone who finds their way to Jackson but this girl makes your heart ache. Most adults youâve worked with arenât able to hold themselves together this long, putting on a brave face despite everything.Â
âDo you like burgers?â You almost cringe as you say it, hoping sheâs had food outside of the synthetic shit FEDRA produces.
âI guess?â
âIâm having a little cookout tomorrow evening once everyoneâs finished their work, itâll be small, just me and some family but youâre welcome to join. You can bring your friend, I have two little ones you can play with. They might be a little younger than your usual friends but I promise theyâre great company.â You swear she almost smiles, and suddenly you just want to make this poor kid smile. âYou know, Iâve got a telescope in my garage, so if you stop by itâs all yours.â
âSeriously?â
âAbsolutely, Iâve never even touched the thing so maybe you can put it to good use. Let me write down the house description for you, it isnât too far from this building, you can stop in whenever you want tomorrow. Thereâs an empty house across the street as well, maybe I could show it to you, see if you like it.â You pencil it down, tearing the paper and handing it to her. This isnât something youâd typically do but you canât resist an opportunity to help her feel more at home here.Â
âYeah, I mean that would be great.â
âPerfect.â You lean back in your chair. âWhat sort of hobbies interest you?â Youâll be in charge of putting together a welcome basket for her since Maria has marked her down as a permanent occupant.
âReading, I like comics. And I used to draw a lot in the QZ.â Perfect, books are easy to find since Jackson was built around a small library.
âOkay then, I think thatâs all I need from you for now but Iâll be around soon once you get housing settled. You can go join Maria and your friend if youâd like, I have to figure out what house weâre going to put you two in but Iâll be stopping by later with a few things for you.â That actually isnât all you need from her, there are more questions on your mind, one specific question. Ask her what his name is.Â
âThanks.â She stands, quickly heading towards the exit as you grab your notebook, you need to make a list of everything theyâll be needing.Â
You shouldnât. If by some stroke of misfortune youâre right this question will only serve to destroy everything youâve worked so hard to push away. You shouldnât.
But you do.Â
Before sheâs out the door you call out her name, you donât want to know, but you have to.
âEllie, whatâs your friend's name?â
You found the treehouse two months after you found Jackson.Â
With tears streaming down your face you had dropped the twins off at Mariaâs, mumbling apologies before going to the edge of town, a large amount of Jackson was empty, and still is. Theyâre planning for the future. Someday, generations from now, the town will grow and theyâll use these houses to accommodate families. But for now itâs just an empty town, one that you realized had a treehouse. You had hidden yourself away there, curling up into a ball to become as small as possible.
Tommy had found you hours later, shivering, with no more tears left to cry. And he hadnât chastised you or asked you why youâd done it, heâd just taken your hand and walked you home. It doesnât take him hours this time, only about thirty minutes according to your watch. You hear the crunch of his boots, the walking pattern you recognize as his, and the creak of the boards as he pushes the hatch open before sliding up into the small space with you.Â
Before he speaks youâre already reaching for him, desperate to cling to some kind of familiar safety.Â
âHey darlinâ.â Itâs a dance you two do, fluid and instinctual as he pulls you into his arms, you slot yourself between his bent legs as he wraps himself around you. You used to sit like this when you couldnât find shelter on snowy nights, one of the many habits you had trouble breaking when you found Jackson. Maria would never ask you to change your relationship with him, it was a decision you had made with Tommy when he told you he wanted to marry her. A part of you just sort of knew she didnât like it, so you stopped. And youâd never hold that against her, if the roles were reversed you certainly wouldnât be as kind as sheâs been. Thatâs why youâve always loved Maria, since the first day you met her she has been like a sister, patient but blunt with you.Â
Except in this one instance.Â
She withheld some particularly important information.
âThe twins?â You lay back against him as you mumble.
âMariaâs watching them. Theyâre helping her make dinner, you shouldaâ seen them in the kitchen. I swear sheâs the only person they listenâŚâ His voice trails off when he feels you tensing up all over again as you go back to fighting off tears.
A silence falls between you, familiar and reminiscent of your first few days together out in the woods. And just like back then, youâre the one to break it.Â
âHave you seen him yet?â The words feel small and hoarse in your throat.
âNo. Couldnât bring myself to.â He rests his chin on your shoulder, you wish you could find comfort in any of this but thereâs just too much dread. Too much unease fills your stomach to relax.Â
âDoes he know youâre here?â You wish your voice didnât tremble so much.
âMaria didnât tell him.âÂ
âAre we sure itâs even him?âÂ
âNot a lot of Joel Millers walking around during the apocalypse.â Itâs like he can sense your skepticism as he quickly continues. âShe said he looked like a Miller.â
âWhat does that even mean?â
âLike me but grayer.â Fair enough.
âDoes he know Iâm here?â Thereâs no way. He couldnât.Â
âNo.âÂ
âGood.âÂ
âCanât stay that way forever.â You know that. But you donât have anything to say about it so you move on, and redirect the anger that mixes with your confusion and fear.
âWhy didnât she tell us?â He canât take your side in this, as much as you want him to, he has to take her side because herâs is the rational one. Do you have a side? Can you be mad at her for this? Are there even sides?
âProbably because she knew weâd react like this.â His head tilts a bit to rest against your own. Youâre thankful for this position so you donât have to look him in the eye.
âShe should have told us.â Youâre trying to remain calm but your voice is pitching up higher by the minute.Â
âShe was going to, she just didnât know how. She thought she had more timeâÂ
You need to relax. It feels like your heart is going to burst from your chest and youâre certain Tommy feels it too.Â
âHow did he find us?â He wouldnât have been looking for you specifically, unless he had a death wish.Â
âOn accident, I think. Maria said he was looking for me when they found him.â That makes sense. Itâs just a coincidence that youâre also here. He has no way of knowing that you even know Tommy. How he managed to locate him is another matter.Â
âWeâre two thousand miles away from the QZ, how the fuck did he find you?â
âHe always gets what he wants.âÂ
You canât argue with that. Plain and simple, you donât need much more than that.Â
âI donât want to see him.â An impossible request, but you make it anyway.Â
âWe both know that isnât possible.âÂ
âTell her to send him away.â Also unlikely.Â
âYou know she canât do that, we donât turn folks away from Jackson.âÂ
âThen Iâll leave.â
âLike hell you will.â There is no fight in his voice, just certainty as he holds you a little tighter. Not without me. The silent promise that lingers under his words, but itâs more complicated than that now, you have two toddlers and he has a wife, there is no running away from this. No running away from him
Heâs inevitable.Â
It doesnât matter if the world ends, and you run halfway across the country, Joel Miller is inevitable.
âHeâs got a kid.â You mumble as you reach for his hand, entwining your fingers with his. You hadnât realized how cold you were until you felt the warmth of his skin against yours.Â
He scoffs. âHeâs got two.â
âAnother kid, some girl. He brought her here all the way from Boston.â
He shifts a bit, clearly confused. âWhy?â
âI was hoping youâd know, it isnât exactly in his nature to help the needy.âÂ
He pauses for a moment. âWell, I mean, how old is she?â
âFourteen.âÂ
âWell thereâs your reason, Sarah was fourteen.â
Sarah.
A girl you know very little about other than the fact that sheâs your daughter's namesake. Sarah Ruth Miller. It had been Tommyâs idea, you had only picked out a name for a boy and you owed Tommy everything for keeping you alive that long, so when he asked if he could pick his niece's middle name youâd been more than happy to oblige.Â
It hadnât been Joel who told you about Sarah, he never even told you he had a kid.Â
Tommy had told you about it just before the twins were born. Youâd been snowed into a cabin and heâd just returned from hunting with a grin on his face as he told you he had a surprise. You couldnât sleep, between the cold and the pain in your lower back you were just too uncomfortable most nights. Tommy always insisted on staying up to keep you company even if he ended up falling asleep most of the time.Â
That night he told you about how he lost his niece on outbreak day as he skinned the fox heâd caught in one of his traps as you sat beside him in front of the crumbling fireplace. When he finished the story he held up the pelt and told you he was going to make your babies first blanket with it.Â
Of course at the time neither of you knew that he would have to make a second blanket, or that he would need to do it a month sooner than either of you had planned.Â
âI invited him to dinner tomorrow.â No sense in hiding the fact from him, heâll find out either way.Â
âWhat?â His hand tightens around yours and itâs your turn to comfort him as your thumb rubs circles against the tense skin.
âEllie- the kid, I invited her before I knew about Joel. Even told her she could bring him.â You almost laugh at how ridiculous it all sounds now. Of course you invited him to dinner completely by accident, sounds like something you would do.Â
âThen why donât we just get it over with?â Or you could leave, brave the Wyoming wilderness with your kids and his wife and make a run for it, far, far, away from Joel Miller.Â
But you canât do that.Â
So you might as well get it over with.Â
âTogether?â You bring his hand up to your face to warm the icy skin of your cheek.
âTogether.âÂ
He means it. He stays with you until the next day, walking you back into town and bringing you to his house. Maria starts apologizing the second the two of you walk through the door but you just hug her. She doesnât owe you anything, any anger you thought you felt towards her was misplaced.Â
And you all settle in for the night.Â
On particularly bad nights youâll spend the night at their house. Itâs been happening less and less these last few months but itâs an unspoken decision tonight as Maria brings down sleeping bags from the attic for the kids.Â
You tuck the kids in by the fireplace, hoping that they donât catch the vacant look in your eyes as you kiss their foreheads. Thankfully they both seem to be too excited about having a living room campout to notice. You hear hushed whispers from the kitchen, it sounds like an argument so you just sit on the couch, wrapping a blanket around yourself as you stare out the window facing the street.Â
What house did she put them in? There are a few options for temporary housing, but he could be anywhere. The thought makes you nauseous. Thankfully youâre distracted when you eventually hear Maria stomping up the stairs followed by a sigh from the kitchen before Tommy joins you on the couch.Â
âEverything all right?â You mumble, hoping to not wake the kids as you offer up some of the blanket to him.Â
âIt will be.â
God you hope so.
âHow do you wanna do this?âÂ
Good question.Â
Preferably you wouldnât be doing this at all, instead you would be enjoying what might be the last nice day before autumn sets in entirely. You, Arthur, Ruth, Tommy, and Maria. Youâd still be happy if Ellie came over by herself but thatâs so unlikely you donât even consider it an option. Joelâs too protective and you confirmed with Maria that Ellie would be coming. He wonât let her go alone, you know that better than anyone.Â
You rub the back of your neck with your freehand. âThe kids stay inside with Maria.â Ruth is already there, helping her aunt with the salad as Arthur sits in your lap, playing with a few stones heâs set up on the picnic table.Â
âOkay.â Tommyâs biting his nails, youâd spent weeks reprimanding him about that until he broke the habit. Â
Your knee starts bouncing, a nervous habit of your own that youâve had for as long you can remember. Thankfully Arthur simply hums to himself as you bounce him. As far as you can tell neither one of the twins knows something is wrong, you can only hope it stays that way.Â
âWe can wait for them out here, I can ask Ellie to go in and help Maria with the kids.â
âAnd then?â
You frown in contemplation. âI havenât planned that far ahead.â
âSo you didnât plan for the most important part?â
âDid you?âÂ
His teeth shift when you ask, biting down hard enough to split his nail lower than he intended. You watch as blood blooms there while he curses under his breath.  Â
âShit, go inside and grab a bandage, theyâre in the cabinet above the sink.â He stands as you wave him towards the house, he brings his thumb to his mouth, his brow furrowed. âAnd bring Maria and Ruth out with you when you come back so we can go over everything with her.â He nods, humming in response before he disappears behind the screen door.
âIs Uncle Tommy okay?â When you look down youâre met with a worried look plastered on your son's face. You instinctively cup his face with your hand, using your thumb to smooth out the wrinkle between his brows. He looks too much like his father when he does that.Â
âHeâs okay, love. Heâs just gotta go get your Aunt and Ruth.â You lean down, kissing his forehead before turning to set him down next to you.Â
âOkay, Mama.â He seems satisfied with your response as he gives your leg a little pat before running off towards the edge of the yard. Youâve got a patch of rocks and gravel the kids like to dig through. You turn to watch him, with your back now leaning against the picnic table as he crouches down, examining the ground before finding a suitable stone. Clutching it in his hand he rushes back to you, holding it up for your approval.
âVery pretty, thank you.â You take it from him with a smile, setting it behind you on the table with the rest of them. He repeats the process several times, staring down at the ground, scrutinizing each rock before bringing the ones he deems good enough over to you. You give appropriate ooâs and ahâs to each one, grateful for the brief peace your son is able to give you. He carries on with this for sometime, until you have a sizable pile of rocks beside you.Â
He leaves, and he returns, dozens of times until he decides not to return to the patch of gravel.Â
You thank him for the speckled stone he hands you now but instead of running back across the yard he squints, staring up at your expression.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â He hops up onto the bench next to you, grabbing the sleeve of your shirt and bunching it up in his little fist as you give him a soft smile.
âNothingâs wrong, hon.â You ruffle his hair a bit but he doesnât seem convinced.Â
âWhyâd you make a mad face then? Uncle Tommy too.âÂ
So much for the kids being clueless, theyâve always been too smart for their own good.Â
Shit.
You sigh, looking up at the clouds briefly before looking back down at him.
No sense in lying to him. âYou know how Uncle Tommy has a brother?â You wrap an arm around him, pulling him close.
His face scrunches up a bit as he thinks. âYeahâŚâ He doesnât sound entirely convinced as you give him a reassuring smile.Â
âWell, we donât really- we donât always get along with Uncle Tommyâs brother, and heâs gonna be visiting us soon.âÂ
âWhy?âÂ
âHeâs in Jackson for a little bit, and he came a long way to get here-â
âNo Mama, why donât you like him?â
This is a conversation you had hoped to have with your children when theyâre older. Preferably it would be one you wouldnât have to have at all, but itâs just another unavoidable part of Joel. Theyâre already old enough to ask questions, it started when kids in their class began asking if Tommy was their dad. Which of course led to the twins asking you one night just before bed the same question.Â
âNo love, heâs your uncle, who told you that?â You donât want that rumor going around, people already talk about it, it doesnât help that they both bear a resemblance to him.
âNo one, Annie asked us.â Your daughter answers as you brush some of her hair behind her ear. You recognize the name, itâs a girl in their daycare class.Â
âAnd what did you tell her?â
âThat we just got a mom.â Ruth answers but Arthur picks up the second sheâs finished speaking.Â
âDo we have a dad?â He tilts his head to the side as you swallow loudly.Â
âYes, you do.â
âWhere?â Ruth asks.Â
Last youâd heard he was in Boston.Â
âIâm not sure.â They turn and look at each other before turning in unison towards you, you should have known they wouldnât take that answer. âWe lived together for a little while, in New York, and then we got separated.â None of that means anything to either of them but itâs an answer, which is better than nothing.
Arthurs tiny hand squeezes yours, pulling you back into reality. You often wonder if they know when youâre lost in a memory, he looks up at you curiously. What did you do to deserve such a patient child?Â
You take a moment to think of a way to phrase it. âWe⌠got into a fight. A long time ago.â
âAbout what?â
âGrown up stuff.â Your heartbeat quickens, you donât want him to know about all that, heâs too little, you need to end this conversation.
âWhat kin-â When he starts another line of questioning you poke at his sides, sliding him off the bench in a fit of giggles.Â
âTime to go inside, nosy little man.â You follow after him as he rushes away, brown hair thatâs just starting to curl at the ends falling into his eyes as he runs away from the house.
You catch up to him within a few steps, scooping him up and cradling him like a baby. He lets out a high pitched shriek until you squish your face into his cheek, kissing the rosy skin until he quiets down to a few small giggles.Â
âYour aunt needs some help in the kitchen, youâre gonna go play with her and your sister now.â He nods as he squirms in your arms until heâs more comfortable, wrapping his arms around your neck and resting his chin on your shoulder as you walk him back towards the house.Â
Heâs gonna need a nap soon, which means Ruth is gonna need a nap soon. Maybe you should try and get them both down before everything else happens.Â
Right on cue, Tommy pushes open the door with Ruth on his hip, Maria not far behind him. Based on the smiles theyâre both sporting you can assume theyâve made up. They always do.Â
âI think it might be time for these two to head inside.â Tommy gives you a soft smile and for a single second you get to pretend that everythingâs fine. Maria takes a lighter towards the grill, trying to light it as you go to stand next to Tommy, the twins both grinning at each other.Â
In your own little bubble, everything is completely fine, and youâre with your family.Â
And at the end of your single perfect second the bubble is popped. It all happens before youâre ready, although you doubt you could ever really be ready for this.Â
Maria pockets her lighter, mumbling something about going inside to look for matches after a few unsuccessful attempts. You set Arthur down, nudging him in her direction, he quickly runs towards her, taking her hand as she begins to make her way back towards the house. Tommy wraps his free hand around your shoulder. Giving you a reassuring squeeze as you rest your head against him to stare at your little girl.Â
âWeâve got this.â He gives you another squeeze but youâre struggling to find safety in it. Heâs always been the strong one, the confrontational one. Heâs got this. You donât. You tilt your head to stare at him when Ruthâs gaze goes from your face to his but your head snaps to the side when you hear your name called.Â
Everyone looks up. The twins, Maria, Tommy, and you, as Ellie walks around the side of the house and waves at you. The sound of your name makes the man walking behind her look as well, his all too familiar scowl scanning the yard, softening into a look of disbelief when his eyes settle on you.
Then - NEW YORK CITY, QUARANTINE ZONE : 2019
âI donât like havinâ you out there on your own. I worry too much.â He mumbles the words against the back of your neck as he tightens his hold around your waist. At some point the two of you had stopped pretending youâd wake up any other way and just went to bed like this. âStay here, angel.âÂ
Youâre so comfortable you almost consider it, but you ran out of cards last week and youâre cleared for work as of today. âI have to go if I want to sign up for any of the well paying shifts, Joel.â You peel his arms off of you, sitting up as he matches your movements.Â
âDonât sign up for that shit, itâs always somethinâ stupid or dangerous.â His voice is low and thick with sleep as he wraps his arms back around you. âIf you need somethinâ Iâll get it for you.â He hasnât shaved in a few weeks, his coarse facial hair rubs against your shoulder as he murmurs.Â
Who knew big, scary Joel Miller could be so clingy.Â
The most surprising part of your relationship, if you could even call it that, with Joel is just how needy he is. You donât have any problems with it, itâs just a bit of a shock. Although maybe needy isnât the right word.Â
Protective.Â
Youâve left the apartment two times in total since moving in with Joel, both times you insisted on needing air much to his dismay. He accompanied you around the block without a word the first time. The second time was the same, the only difference was that you stopped to buy a small bag of buttons, Joel had frowned as you made small talk with the older man sitting behind the table before rushing you home.Â
âYou could have just told me you needed buttons.â He grumbles as he holds the door open for you as you make your way to the kitchen table, taking a seat as you take his flannel off of you, the sight of your tattered sports bra serves as a reminder of how badly you need to get back to work once youâre cleared.Â
âI donât need buttons, you do. Every shirt you own is missing at least one.â You laid the shirt down on the table, pointing to the drawer next to the sink. âGet me the sewing kit.â His frown deepens but he does as you say before sitting down across from you.
Reaching across the table he sets the box down beside you, crossing his arms in front of his chest. âStill, you should have just asked me.âÂ
You open the small tin, unspooling a bit of thread. âI needed to go outside for a few minutes, itâs stuffy in here.âÂ
âWe could have opened a window.â He grumbles under his breath as you grin, holding the thread between your teeth while sliding the other end through the needle.
âItâs not the same and you know it.â You mumble through your teeth before releasing the thread and setting the needle down. You pour the buttons out onto the table, searching for one that best matches the beige of the buttons on the flannel. Eventually his hand encompasses your own as he guides you to one thatâs a slightly different shape but matches the color perfectly. âThank you.â You give him a teasing smile as you place it over the frayed threads where its predecessor once was.Â
That was a week ago and you havenât been outside since but when Joel went to get the mail from downstairs he brought you a notice from the doctor that you were cleared to return to work today. Despite his protests you start to push the blanket off of you but heâs quick to pull it right back up into place.
âStay, please.â He continues to hum against your skin.Â
âI need the money, Joel.â You turn to look at him, his usual morning sulky look seems doubled today.
âHow much do you need?â He raises an eyebrow at you as he lets his face fall forward, his forehead resting on yours.Â
âItâs not like that.â You swear, if you asked him to, he'd find a way to give you the moon and stars, but you hate relying on him for everything, especially after such a long time of being dependent on him. âI just need to work.â
âYou donât need to. You want to.â His breath still smells like whiskey from last night as he gives you an exasperated glare.Â
âFine, I want to work. My legâs fine now, you can barely tell anything was wrong with it. Iâll be okay.â You lean just a bit more towards him, kissing his cheek before sliding out of bed.Â
You arenât exactly dating Joel.Â
Dating seems so trivial during an apocalypse, and you havenât had any conversations about it. It just sort of happened. You woke up one day and neither one of you wanted to pull away from the other, and it progressed from there. He came home from a job one night and climbed into bed next to you, wrapping himself around you and he kissed your forehead before falling asleep. You still donât know if he knew you were awake. The next night youâd taken his face in your hands and kissed him, just to see what heâd do, thankfully after a moment of shock heâd kissed you back. And it just became another unspoken part of your life with Joel. He kissed you goodbye when he left to go do the things he refused to tell you about in any detail, and you always greeted him with a kiss when he returned.Â
But you donât have sex.Â
You want to ask him why but you hold your tongue, itâs possible youâre just being impatient or maybe he just wants to wait. So you donât push it or bring it up because you like how things are with him.Â
The word boyfriend is not a word that suits Joel.Â
He isnât your boyfriend, heâs just sort of, yours.Â
âAngel, please.â He continues his griping as he pinches the bridge of his nose.Â
âJoel, please.â You repeat back at him, trying to mimic his low tone. Â
âIâm beinâ serious. Things have gotten bad out there recently, too much FEDRA bullshit.âÂ
âItâs always been bad and Iâve always managed, Iâll be fine.â You pull one of his shirts out of the closet, slipping it on, starting to button it as he makes his way to the end of the bed.Â
âCan we at least talk about this?â He rests his elbows on his knees as he hunches over. The morning haze on his face is gone and is replaced by the stern scowl youâre used to.Â
âThere isnât anything to talk about. Iâll be careful, thereâs nothing to worry about, Iâll see you tonight.â After digging through the dresser drawers you eventually find your only pair of jeans. Once your boots are laced you walk back over to him, standing between his legs and taking his face in your hands.Â
Staring down into his surprisingly gentle eyes, so dark that in the dim morning light they look pitch black.Â
God heâs pretty.Â
Even with that stupid pout of his.Â
âIâll see you tonight.â You lean down, placing a kiss on his forehead before pulling away only to be stopped when his grip on your waist tightens.Â
âJust- wait.â Youâre about to push him away with a laugh but his voice cracks just enough to make your smile drop.Â
You start to speak in a soft tone but you only get one word out. âJoelâŚâÂ
âPlease- I just- I canât let you go out there and sign up for that shit. Thereâs jobs that arenât dangerous, simple stuff.â
âThose jobs pay a few cards at best, hon. I canât wear your clothes forever, I need new underwear, socks, all sorts of things. And I want to contribute around here, Iâll be okay, I promise.â You push the mess of hair falling across his forehead back as you stare down at him.Â
He looks so genuinely upset already and you havenât even left yet, heâs making this far more difficult than you thought itâd be. âI wonât be able to do anything if I donât know youâre safe. Itâs dangerous for both of us, I canât be distracted like that.â You sigh, long and loud as you drop your hands to your sides.Â
The more you think about it the more it makes sense. He really does worry too much, and even if you donât know exactly what he does for work, you know itâs dangerous.Â
Maybe it wonât be so bad.Â
âOkay.â You groan.Â
âYouâll stay?â The corners of his mouth start to raise a bit.Â
âIâll do the safer jobs.â The hint of a smile that had been on his face dissipates. âItâs a compromise. You canât always get everything you want.âÂ
âFine, come right home after.â
âI will.â With one more kiss he finally lets you go.Â
So, at Joelâs request, you sign up for the easy jobs.Â
Theyâre boring, and generally sort of terrible, and they pay the least, but Joel doesnât make any further arguments about it. So you keep signing up for them. Typically itâs childcare, or filing documents for FEDRA, or working in the entry level food processing jobs.Â
Boring, boring, jobs that involve standing around and doing nothing or wrangling kids who donât deserve to grow up in a place like this. You hate the look on their little faces, they always look too grown up for their ages.Â
But you put up with it, because at the end of the day you get to go home to Joel, Joel who seems to be in significantly higher spirits ever since youâve agreed to those specific jobs. So you make it work. He makes it worth the banality of it all, at the end of your first week back to work he surprised you with a large paper bag, grinning like youâd never seen him before. When you unfolded the crumpled bag you were greeted with a mess of fabric, different colors and textures. You poured the contents onto the bed and immediately realized what heâd gotten you. Bras, panties, socks, and two pairs of jeans. It mustâve cost him a fortune and your eyes began to water immediately. You had wrapped your arms around him, barely letting go of him for the rest of the night.Â
After that it got even easier, eventually you got used to it.Â
You learned to live with the terrible jobs, and if you wanted anything you couldnât afford with your meager savings Joel always managed to get it for you, even if you hadnât told him youâd wanted it in the first place.Â
You probably would have stayed like that forever if you hadnât started taking the long way home. Weeks had passed before it happened, you had grown comfortable, vulnerable. Joel always made sure you felt safe and you let your guard down just long enough for something to happen.Â
Joel had left early that morning, telling you that he was gonna be late, before he kissed you, he was out the door before the sun came up.Â
Whenever Joel told you he would be late you took the long way home. Winding back alleys that were mostly empty that always led back to the apartment building. It was just a treat for yourself, something to do to fill time that would be spent at home, waiting for him.Â
You never had any issues or alterations.Â
Until that afternoon.Â
Joel will be late.Â
So the second your shift is over you take the handful of cards and make your way through the city. And just like youâve done every other time, you look behind you every once and a while but not nearly as much as you should. Because of this, you donât see him until itâs too late.Â
Itâs a younger man, probably a year or two older than you at most peering around the last corner you turned. Once he knows heâs been seen his pace quickens and instinctively you do the same.Â
âOn the ground!â The second you hear it you pray itâs for someone else, it has to be, youâve done nothing wrong. You walk faster, hoping to avoid what could be a messy confrontation when the sound of boots slamming on the pavement rushes towards you and youâre forced up against the wall of the alley.Â
In your peripheral you catch the white text against the black of his uniform.Â
FEDRA.Â
Your knees are kicked from under you as he pins your arms behind your back, the force at which your head hits the stone has you dizzy as you try to catch your breath. Too much is happening too quickly, when you finally feel like you can use your voice the wind is knocked out of you as you feel him hit you in the side, hard enough to have you wondering if he broke a rib. The force of the hit makes your knees crumble completely as the officer lets you fall, only giving you enough time to get to your hands and knees before his boot slams into your stomach knocking you onto your side.Â
Finally, when you roll over onto your back you get a clear look at him. He looks like your average FEDRA officer, the only thing out of place is the unsure look on his face. Your ears are ringing so you barely make out what he says, all you catch is something about thinking you were someone else, before he turns and leaves as if it never happened.
Leaving you alone to clutch your stomach and wonder what just happened, and what you did to deserve that.Â
Youâd never heard of random attacks from FEDRA before. Maybe in other zones, but the city has always been calm as far as that goes. Maybe things really did get worse while your leg was healing.Â
Joel was right.Â
Thatâs all you can think about as you stumble to get to your feet, everything hurts but now is not the time to assess your wounds, you need to get home before something else happens. You manage to hobble up the stairs of the building, nearly collapsing by the time you opened the door.Â
You feel so stupid.Â
Joel was right.Â
It isnât safe out there, at least not for you. No one fucks with Joel, no one attacks him on the street because theyâre afraid of him. No ones afraid of you.Â
Itâs a long couple of hours after that.Â
Mostly a lot of berating yourself as you try to take in the extent of the damage.Â
Surprisingly it seems to mostly be surface level. Sure, youâre going to bruise pretty bad and your face got scraped up on the stones but nothing permanent seems to have been inflicted.Â
Once youâve showered and slipped into an old shirt of his and a pair of panties you climb into bed, wanting this day to just be over, but you know it isnât. Right on schedule you hear the lock click as Joel steps through the front door, you hide your face in your pillow.Â
âWhat are you still doinâ up? Itâs almost midnight.â His voice is a low whisper as you hear the familiar sounds of him kicking off his boots and setting down his things. You hear the outer layer of his clothing hit the floor, you told him a while ago you thought it was gross that he slept in the clothes he wore all day. He started sleeping in his undershirt and boxers after that. âYou okay, Darlinâ?â The bed shifts as he sits beside you and the second you turn and look at him his jaw twitches. âChrist⌠what the hell happened? Who did this to you?â Heâs managing to stay mostly calm but youâre already worried heâs going to blow.Â
âItâs nothing, I just had an issue with an officer on my way-â
âThis is not nothing.â Heâs already fussing with your face as you take his hands and move them away from you.Â
âJoel-â
âTell me what happened.â Itâs a command and youâre too tired to fabricate something, and for the first time in a while, youâre afraid.Â
So you tell him exactly how it happened. And before you realize itâs happening youâre sniffling, a part of you feels like youâre about to be scolded for this but he only nods, never interrupting you until youâve finished.Â
Your visionâs blurry with tears when you look up at him, the weight of being attacked starts to weigh heavy as you realize just how lucky you were that that was all that happened. And then you say the words heâs been waiting to hear.
âYou were right, Joel.âÂ
âIâm sorry, angel. I should have been there to protect you.â He holds his arms open and you donât hesitate as you lean forward into him. You do your best to hold it together as he lays you down before clicking off the lamp and pulling you back against him. He softly scratches your back, kissing the top of your head as he does. Itâs silent for a few more minutes until he suddenly whispers into the darkness. âTell me youâll stay here from now on.â
âJoel, I-â
âNo more going out there without me. Youâll stay safe right here, no one can hurt you here, not while Iâm around.â You open your mouth to argue again but stop yourself.Â
Heâs right.Â
Now that youâve calmed down you know that youâre lucky to even be alive. You donât know why you were attacked but you know it could happen again, and there are worse things than being beaten.Â
No one would hurt you here, not with Joel around.Â
âStay here, angel.â He murmurs, softer this time.Â
Joel is right.
âOkay.â
He isnât beside you when you wake up, your hands searching through the cold sheets seeking his warmth. He had mentioned something as you were falling asleep about an early morning supply run but you had hoped to say goodbye before he left, you wanted to make him breakfast. As you get ready to roll back over and sleep a bit more youâre startled into an upright position.Â
âYou should watch where youâre flying, angel.â You bite back a shriek as Tessâs voice comes from the direction of the kitchen.Â
âChrist, you scared the hell out of me!â Your heart skips a beat as you reach over to the nightstand, pulling on the little chain that turns the lamp on. âJoelâs not even here, what are you doing?â You donât like the idea of being alone with her, she doesnât come around much anymore, you used to see her in the hall on her way here constantly, but after you moved in she stopped.Â
You do your best not to flinch as she makes her way over to you, standing at the foot of the bed.
âIâm not here to hurt you, thereâs no need for theatrics.â You hadnât realized you were shaking so badly until she said it, it takes a conscious effort but you manage to stop it for the most part. âIâm just here to talk.â
âAbout what?âÂ
âAbout you and Joel.â
You donât want to talk about that with Tess. You donât want to talk to Tess at all, she frightens you and she knows it.Â
âThereâs nothing to talk about.â
âDonât talk to me like Iâm stupid.â This time when you flinch she hesitates. For a brief moment the facade of a woman who fears nothing drops, and you swear you see sympathy in her eyes. âJoel is dangerous, you need to be careful with him or youâre going to get hurt.â
Is that why sheâs here? To try and break you up?Â
âHe wonât hurt me, he cares about me.â You wish you sounded more sure of yourself.Â
âYouâre right, at least for now.â She flips her pocket knife open, ever so carefully running the blade along the underside of her nails, scraping away any dirt or grime she so happens to find, you fight the urge to flinch again. When she finally looks back up at you she takes a moment, examining your expression as if this was an interrogation. âBeing loved by him is the worst thing that could possibly happen to a girl like you.â
You canât help but scoff, now look whoâs being theatrical. âA girl like me?â
âGood, too good. And fragile.â She points at you with the blade before returning to her nails. âHeâll do anything to keep you safe, even if it means breaking you into tiny little pieces, just so youâll fit in a box he can lock.âÂ
Youâre about to call her a liar but you hesitate. âWhy are you telling me this?â
âYou deserve to know.â
âOkay, but why? You donât even like me.â
âYou wouldnât be here if I didnât like you.âÂ
Fair enough.
âI think you should go.â You donât want to hear anything else. You donât believe anything sheâs saying and the entire conversation makes you feel sick. She doesnât know anything about your relationship with him, and she clearly doesnât know anything about Joel. Heâd do anything for you, you donât think youâve ever been taken care of before you met him. Â
âWhat do you know about glue traps?â She doesnât make any effort to leave so you decide to just answer her with a sigh.Â
âLike the ones you use to catch mice? I donât know, Joel buys them sometimes.â
She points her knife in the direction of the corner of the room, it takes a moment for your eyes to adjust. Sure enough, in the corner of the room, peeking out from under his dresser, is the faint outline of something on the floor, youâd never noticed it before.Â
âItâs the worst kind of way to catch a mouse.â She stands, walking across the room and peeling up the trap with the edge of her blade before snapping it shut and taking the edge of the trap between her fingers, dragging it across the floor to the middle of the room so you had a clear view of it. âTheyâll do anything to get out.â The tip of her boot nudges the corner of the trap, now that itâs been dragged into the lamp light you can see exactly what she wanted to show you. Two things are in the bloody trap. A mouse, barely alive, based on the way its chest rises and falls, and something else. A caterpillar maybe?Â
No.Â
A leg. A bloody mouse leg, on the edge of the trap.Â
âTheyâll chew off their limbs, and peel off their own skin just to get out, the ones that manage to are lucky enough to bleed out somewhere else. The ones stuck in the trap though?â She nods down at the creature you now refuse to look at. âTheyâve got it the worst. Suffocation, dehydration, the ones who try to peel off and canât, bleed out, stuck in place.â  Â
With a sudden crunch, her boot slams down on the trap. You watch, slack jawed, as she peels it off the sole before tossing it in the bin in the corner.Â
âIâd take a quick death over either of those.â
âI think you should leave. Now.â You try to sound authoritative but your voice trembles too much to sound anything but afraid.Â
âI heard you got caught up in some FEDRA business yesterday.â She starts again but youâve had enough.
âTess.â You manage to have a bit of sterness this time in your tone but it doesnât seem to affect her much.Â
âFine. Iâll leave. But donât say I didnât warn you.â You catch that sympathetic look one more time before she unlocks the door chain, twisting the doorknob before speaking one last time. âI noticed some of our inventory is missing, this is the only warning youâre gonna get about that. If you want shit like that just ask, Iâm sure Joel would be more than happy to have another way to control you.â She doesnât turn around when she says it, simply slamming the door and leaving. You have no clue what sheâs talking about, but that isnât the part of the conversation that sticks with you. All you can think about is that crunching sound.Â
So you avoided her after that, writing off her words as an act of jealousy.Â
Joel would never do anything to hurt you.
Of course you know better now. She was just like you, she had been in the glue trap herself when she tried to keep you from joining her, but you hadnât listened, instead youâd fallen face first into Joel. And he wouldn't let you go without keeping some of you for himself.

đđđđ;; chosoâs mind has been spiraling for a couple days now. the fact that you wrote your phone number down on his hand had him going. he wanted to call you. he wanted to text you. but he just couldnât. in order to be sanitary, heâd write the number down again on a sticky note and scrubbed the ink off his skin. he didnât have time for a loverâŚbut he felt like making time for you.

final note: guys,, remember this is my personal twist on the mid 90âs era so some things from current time will be put into the story (such as the ability to text without emailing one another or using a pager, familiar current time songs that are added into the 90âs era of this story, certain tv shows/movies that came after the 90âs)
âââ ⎠continue to part three â
âchoso, we should make the house look like a haunted house!â itadori suggests. october was the season of spooks and scares (as yuji put it) and choso wasnât into festivities that much but if he had to do it to make his little brother happy, he would do it.
the boys make their way to the nearby department store, letting yuji pick out what decorations should be put up in the house. for a little boy, choso didnât even even pick up how significantly scary the items were because yuji wasnât shitting himself out of fear.
âuhâŚyuji, i know you said you wanted the place to look like a haunted houseâŚare you sure you wonât freak yourself out and start crying?â choso said, stifling his laughter.
âiâm not gonna cry.â yuji crossed his arms. âand iâm not scared of some dumb clowns. theyâre just decorations, anyway.â
yuji was more mature than he lookedâŚin the aspect of fear. he was a small boy but things didnât scare him easily. you could say heâs a risk taker outside his moments of vulnerability. choso knew that heâd might jump back behind him, tightly holding the hem his tan sweater if he saw kechizu. the male finally smiles at the pink haired boy and nods.
âyouâre right. theyâre fake.â choso says calmly.
as they approach the checkout area, yuji sees the food area. serving simple things like pizza, hotdogs and drinks. the stuff youâd find at a concession stand of a sports game.
âcan we get a pizza?â yuji asked. choso paused. he didnât intend on spending 13 dollars on food from a department store. he had other plans anyway.
âyou sure you want that? i was gonna get you a happy meal before we went home.â the male yawned, threading his fingers through his hair. the sudden mention of a happy meal excites yuji like a child on christmas morning.
ânever mind, i donât want pizza.â itadori quickly switches. choso chuckled, knowing how easy it was to get yuji to think about his choices.
âaw, cute kid,â choso heard a voice behind him. the male whipped his head around, his brown hair following along with him, only to see you standing there with a smile.
âis this your little brother?â
choso flushed a red color when he instantly remembered your face, almost making him feel bad for not calling you or texting you since you dropped off your number to him. he was feeling slightly embarrassed.
âuh..yeah, thatâsâthis is yuji.â he stumbles a bit, trying not to make his embarrassment known. itadori already knows the deal, so he waves at you with a big toothy grin, making you smile and wave back at him.
âum..whatâre you doing here?â choso queried, trying to spark a conversation first for once. the male was obviously nervous and you could see his cheeks reddening the more he looked at you. if you didnât know any better, you wouldâve thought he would explode right in front of your eyes.
âshopping, like everyone else,â you teased. âbut really, i just gotta pick some stuff up for my mom and then iâll be on my way.â
your eyes travel over to the shopping cart that yuji was clinging onto, looking at the halloweeny decorations and you smile.
âyou donât seem like the type to be into holidays really,â you start, âdid your brother convince you?â
choso also looked at the shopping cart full of stuff and blushed even harder. he was already flustered enough. it couldnât get any worse than this.
âohâno..he didnât,â he chuckled nervously, âi actually really like halloween. the scary shitâstuffâŚyou know, the movies? theyâre cool.â
you giggled at chosoâs nervous attempts to speak to you about the festivities that he almost never participated in and the quick fix with his mistake of swearing in front of yuji like he wasnât there.
âoh, so you like horror movies? yeah, you strike me as that kind of guy.â you said. you couldnât help but notice his medium length hair, just like you had seen the other night when he was working, flowing in the wind that came through as the store doors slowly slid themselves open as customers exited the building.
the male wore an oversized tan sweater with a pair of joggers and some sneakers. you could tell this was a lazy outfit. something youâd call a âno one will see meâ outfit.
his eyes were tired and he had a stoic expression, aside from his profuse blushing that began to die down when he finally got the chance to relax, having his hands shoved down into his pant pockets. his irises were so pretty. a pretty shade of purple. you never seen anyoneâs eyes look like his before.
the silence prolonged for a moment. the two of you suddenly ran out of things to say. this was perfectly fine for choso. he wouldâve lost his mind if he had to keep talking. it wasnât that he didnât enjoy talking to you. he was just too scared.
but it wasnât long before that silence was disturbed.
âmy big brother really likes you. he thinks youâre preââ itadori starts before choso swiftly covers his mouth with his significantly larger hand, making you giggle once more.
âiâm sorry about thatâŚyuji just likes to say random stuff when the silence is too loud for him.â choso said trying to cover up his embarrassment.
âitâs okay,â you smiled at him. your words seemed to ease his nerves a bit but it wasnât enough to completely calm him down. you glance down at your phone when you feel it vibrate against your thigh.
itâs your mom texting you, asking if youâre on your way back.
âoh, shâshoot,â you say, quickly fixing your mistake before you actually said it. âi gotta go. my mom just texted.â
choso is quickly snapped out of his embarrassment trance and his head swings over to look at you, his hair following along.
âyouâre going?â he asked. through his dead and serious expression, you could see a hint of sadness. a very small change in his usual expression. you nod.
âyeah. but listen, you should call me. you donât have my number just to stare at it.â you remarked before hurrying off, waving at him as you did.
once you were out of his sight, his eyes quickly struck down to yuji. he looked like he wanted to scold the poor boy for publicly embarrassing him in front of you but he decided against it and his expression softened.
âletâs just get homeâŚâ the male sighed.
choso was happy itâs his day off. he got to stay home with his little brother to help decorate their home with terrifying decorations for halloween. choso couldnât help but smile at yujiâs futile attempts to scare him with the masks from the store.
âcome on, you arenât even a little scared?â yuji removed the mask from his face and shook his head to fix his hair, which was flattened and sticking to his forehead.
ânot even in the slightest.â choso chuckled before ruffling itadoriâs hair lightly. âwhat about your friends? you try to scare them yet?â
âmegumi is almost never impressed. heâs kinda lameâŚ.and out of the question.â yuji hummed. âbut i can get nobara. sheâs always screaming.â
âwell, you can do that tomorrow,â choso yawned, âyou gotta get ready for bed soon. you got school in the morning and i donât want you to be tired and falling asleep in class.â
yuji frowned before heâd hug choso. it took a moment for choso to process the moment, given that he wasnât too used to being hugged. choso finally hugged the boy back before smiling softly.
âiâll see you tomorrow, okay?â
yuji nodded and smiled back at his older brother before making his way to his room.
when yuji had finally gone to sleep, the house was quiet, leaving choso staring at the ceiling with his hair in disarray and an unlit cigarette between his lips all while he laid on the bed, doing maladaptive night dreaming.
âworkin outâ by JID played softly from the small radio that sat on the windowsill. his eyes slowly traveled over to the shoe box that stood out from all the other boxes in his closet. there was a bright yellow sticky note at the top with what seemed to have your phone number on it along with your name.
the male sat up on the bed and walked over to the box, snatching the sticky note from the box then walking over to his laptop that sat on the umber colored desk.
choso opened the laptop and navigated to the facetime app and decided to punch in your number. he could feel his stomach turning as the low adverb jingling sound repeated itself.
while he waited for you to answer, heâd take one of the rubber bands off of his wrist and tie his hair back, leaving his bangs to hang down in his face. he even took the time to fix the violet eyeshadow that he always had around his eyes, staining his fingers each time he touched around his eyelids. and finally, heâd press down on the bandage over his nose to make sure it was still sticking.
you suddenly pick up, finally answering chosoâs call. your room was a bit dark like his, except you had your tv going on in the background. it was loud enough for choso to be able to hear.
unlike choso, you were sitting on your bed with your laptop. you had your hair tied up in twin messy buns with a little bit of your hair hanging down in your face. you wore a black spaghetti strap tank top, revealing the tattoo on your shoulder, and a pair of grey joggers with mismatch socks.
âi honestly did not hear this thing going off,â you giggled as you pushed the hair out of your face. you had been downstairs grabbing yourself a drink while choso was calling. âiâm sorry i didnât answer right away, though.â
âoh..no, itâs fine. you arenât busy are you?â
âno, not really. i was thinking about finishing this show i was watching. have you heard of american horror story?â
âyeah, i heard of it. i just never got around to watching it. iâd rather watch movies than an ongoing series.â choso explained simply before heâd light his cigarette. you nod, completely understanding his side.
âshit, well, what movies do you recommend? horror movies, since weâre in spooky season.â you flash a cheeky smile at him. chosoâs heart skips a beat when you finally ask him what heâs interested in. he pauses and begins thinking, taking drags from his cigarette.
âthereâs one movie, i canât tell you all of em off the top of my head,â he begins, âwatch midsommar. itâs kinda disturbing but you might like it.â
âis it gory horror or..?â you ask before taking a sip of your drink as you began to type in the movie name into the search bar in another tab, scrolling through websites to catch any good details about said movie.
âyouâll have to see for yourself,â choso places two of his digits around the cigarette, gently adjusting it between his lips before it could slip out. you realize the longer you talked to him, the more comfortable he seemed to be but you could still see that he was nervous.
âmaybe we can see about it together,â you suggest to the male. âwhenever youâre free, of course.â you add quickly. all of a sudden, choso is blushing just as he did at the store earlier that day. you thought it was kinda adorable how he could look so disinterested to suddenly flustered and scared so quickly.
âiâwell..â choso stammered, âyeah, sureâŚuh, we can watch tomorrow night when i put my little brother to bed. i donât want him interrupting anything.â
you giggled, âaw, heâs so cute, though. but i get it. little kids can get in the way of a lot of stuff.â
the two of you conversed for what felt like hours. your voice was soothing to choso. each time you began to speak, he just imagined you calling his nameâŚjust once.
your call with choso ended around three in the morning, and your cheeks were pink, smiling to yourself as you remembered the random conversations that you two had not too long ago.
you hadnât felt like this about a guy in a long time. while men were usually throwing themselves at you, choso was clearly the odd one out. he was a bit shy but assertive and smart.
chosoâs voice was deep as it came from the depths of the ocean but his words flowed smoothly like butter when he wasnât tripping and fumbling with his words trying to hide his embarrassment.
his style, his personality, the way he looked. in your eyes he was perfect but there were a million things stopping you from telling him you loved him.
what if he has a girlfriend already? what if he isnât ready for a relationship? what if he doesnât want one? he probably just wants to be friends.
aside from all those thoughts clogging your brain, you were aware that youâd be moving to fast by throwing that L word around loosely when you just met him a couple days ago.
âdamn it.â choso sighed to himself.
âyouâre falling for herâŚbut you donât have time for her. whatâre you doing?â choso was beating himself up about the whole entire situation. another cigarette is taken out of the pack and lightened as he tried to calm his anxiety and spiraling thoughts.
he was going crazy. he didnât know what he would do. he wanted you out of his head. he was starting to feel stupid for letting you swoon him as easily as you did at the bar.
part of him wished he never met youâŚ
but he needed more of you.

ââ
Staring at the test on the counter, you were speechless. It was one time, he was cute, you were drunk. It felt right, but the two pink lines definitely did not feel right.Â
Sylvie, who was ready to leave for shift, nagged you from outside the bathroom door, âalmost done in there?â
âYeah, Iâll be right out,â you gathered yourself and put the test in your pocket, not knowing what to do next.
You exited the bathroom with a nervous look on your face and your roommate could tell.
âWhatâs wrong?â She asked.
âCan you keep a secret from the firehouse?â
âOf course. Whatâs wrong?â
âI slept with Casey.â
âWait, when?â
âA couple weeks ago.â
The look in your eyes told Sylvie you werenât telling the whole story.
âIs there something else?â She asked, sitting you down on the couch beside her.
âThereâs more.â
âUh oh.â
âI think Iâm pregnant,â you pulled the test out of your pocket and showed it to Sylvie.
Sylvie embraced you into a hug.
âDoes Casey know?â
âI just found out this morning.â
âItâs gonna be okay. Should I text Boden and tell him youâre not coming in today?â
âNo no,â you wiped the tears from your eyes, âI should go to work. I canât leave truck a man down today.â
âThen we better get moving,â Sylvie smiled warmly.
You grabbed your things from your bed and followed Sylvie out the door to her car, keeping the test tucked in the side pocket of your duffel.
âDo you want to talk about it?â She asked, lowering the radioâs volume.
âI think I should tell Casey.â
âOn shift?â
âYeah, get it out in the open. I feel like Iâm going to explode.â
âCan I ask you something else then?â
You nodded.
âDo you want to keep the baby? Because you shouldnât be riding truck much longer if youâre pregnant.â
âI think so, but I want to talk to him first.â
Sylvie nodded and refocused on the road ahead. The rest of your short commute was quiet, but pulling up to the firehouse, you felt yourself get anxious.
You brought your bag into the locker room to get changed and stuffed the test from the morning in your side pocket. After changing into your station gear, you left for the bunk room to talk to Matt. He was sitting at the desk in his quarters reading the paper as you approached.
âCaptain, do you have a second?â You nervously asked.
âSure, have a seat,â he gestured towards the perfectly made bed.
There was something more than a shift change on your mind and he could tell.
âWhat was it that you wanted to talk to me about?â He closed the door and sat back down at the desk chair.
âThis is a personal matter.â
âOk, what about?â
âRemember what happened between us at Mollyâs a few weeks ago? We both got a little drunk and one thing led to anotherâŚâ you trailed off.
âI do. Is there something wrong?â
âI took a pregnancy test this morning⌠and itâs positive.â You handed him the test.Â
Matt looked like his head was going to explode, but he kept his composure as he drew the blinds shut.Â
âCaptain-âÂ
âNo no, weâre not just lieutenant and firefighter anymore. Itâs Matt, please.â
âMatt,â you corrected, âIâd like to keep the baby, but you donât have to be involved if you donât want to. Or you can be really involved, itâs up to you. And I probably shouldnât be riding truckâŚâ
You had started to ramble, a familiar trait when you were nervous.
âI think you should move in with me,â he admitted, âhelp you prepare and then take care of the baby.â
âMatt, I donât know what to say. We had sex once and now you want to move in together?â
âItâs not that simple. We had sex, got pregnant and I think we should move in together to create a stable home for this baby.â
âOkay.â
âOkay? Like okay, youâll move in?â
âYes, but thereâs rules.â
âWhich are?â
âWhat is this? Do we share a bed when we move in? Are we dating or just friends and colleagues who have gotten themselves into a little mess with genetics?â
âDo you want that?â
âAsk me on a date Matt Casey.â
âTempe Grill? Tomorrow night? 6 oâclock?â
âHell yeah, Mexican food sounds great.â
âIâve got something too then.â
âOkay?â
âIâd like to be involved. Doctors appointments, things like that, as much as youâll let me.â
âOf course.â
âWe should go talk to Boden, you shouldnât be riding truck while pregnant.â
You stood up and he took your hand, âthank you,â you smiled.
âWhatâs there to thank me for?â
âFor taking care of everything.â
âWeâll get everything figured out, donât worry.â

First Date: Frankie Morales
HAPPY FRANKIE FRIDAY Y'ALL!
Masterlist
AO3 link
Frankie Morales x f!Reader
Summary: Based on this tumblr Ask. A full one-shot based on a quick little headcanon drabble I wrote about what a first date with Frankie Morales might look like. There's a little of backstory for Reader because it's me and you know I just can't help myself.
Word Count: 5.2k
Warnings: 18+ MDNI. Fluff and smut (because we like to strike a delicate balance here). Porn with a sprinkle of plot (again, delicate balance). Cuteness overload during your date with Frankie (sign me up for this date please). Heavy makeout session. Mutual masturbation. Fooling around in the back of Frankie's truck because of uh... reasons. Read to find out! I think that's it for warnings. As far as my stuff goes I'd say this is pretty tame? lol. But if I missed anything lmk!
Notes: I hope there aren't any glaring mistakes here. If I find any I'll come back and edit. Tbh I wrote 99% of it on my phone because our wifi was down for THREE DAYS here (RIP me!). It finally came back this morning just in time for me to post this for Frankie Friday â¤ď¸
You tap your phoneâs screen to illuminate it and check the time for probably the fifteenth time in as many minutes to make sure youâre not running late yet as you stand over the bathroom counter putting the final touches on your appearance, wanting to look perfect for tonight. Nerves flutter in your tummy like butterflies and you have to constantly remind yourself to calm down, take it easy.
âItâs just Fish, nothing to get yourself all worked up aboutâ Benny had offered earlier, unhelpfully.
Sure, to your cousins Benny and Will it was just their longtime friend and military buddy, but to you it was the very cute, though very shy, sweet guy that you had met for the first time only recently since you came to âtemporarilyâ crash at your cousins place.
Temporarily had turned into three months far faster than you anticipated. You needed a fresh start, to get out of a not great situation and it was actually your Aunt who had suggested the move to you during your phone call to her on her birthday. Your mother had already been filling her ear with your personal drama it seemed and though she didnât want to pry, she did want to help and she suggested getting away for even a couple of weeks, that her sons had lots of room at their place and would be happy to have you for a while. After a few phone calls with both Will and Benny they had settled any doubts you mightâve had and welcomed you with open arms when you showed up at their doorstep with little more than a single roller suitcase and a small potted plant under your arm. It was about all the possessions you had left after the less than amicable split with your ex that left you couch surfing at your friends for months before the transition to Will and Bennyâs.
So now here you stand, in the bathroom of the guest bedroom you have been calling your own for three months, getting ready for a date with the painstakingly handsome pilot himself, Frankie âCatfishâ Morales.
You know how badly your cousins have been teasing you about the date, you canât even begin to imagine the ribbing Frankie must have been taking from them since heâd asked you out last Sunday at a barbecue Will and Benny had been hosting and theyâd somehow gotten wind of it. Youâre surprised Frankie even kept the date, to be honest. Your cousins, you love them with all your heart, but they can be⌠a lot. Youâre very glad Frankie didnât back down to the pressure though. Youâd seen him a fair bit in your few months here and have been dying for him to finally ask you out. Youâd flirted enough and though heâd been quiet and shy in the beginning, the more you got to know each other, the more he seemed to come out of his shell around you.
So now here you were, moments before Frankie was due to show up at your door and you silently cursed yourself for not being as ready as you should be. You wanted to be ready and standing outside by now so that Will and Benny couldnât get any more jabs in to poor sweet Frankie if he had to stand at the door waiting for you, but as you pull on the short, light denim jacket over your sundress you hear a bark of laughter from Benny and already you know youâre too late.
You quickly press some lip gloss on, run your hands through your hair to make sure itâs falling exactly how you want it to and then take a deep breath in the mirror and quickly scurry out of the bedroom to hopefully save the man that is standing outside on the porch.
âNo keeping her out past curfew, no drinkinâ and drivinâ, no crazy parties or gettinâ too handsy on the first dateâ
Benny is listing things off on his fingers to poor Frankie like heâs your father scalding your prom date and you canât help but roll your eyes.
âWill, you said youâd both be niceâ you complain out loud to the older of the two brothers. Will wasnât much better, but sometimes talking to Benny was like talking to a toddler amped up on a pack of Skittles, there was no getting through when he got over excited about something.
The most ridiculous part about it was that you and Benny were about the same age so it was a little comical, though sweet in his own way, how he tried to âbig brotherâ you.
âAh câmon Ace, we were just joshinâ him a bitâ Will replies, bright white smile gleaming at you with a hint of mischief dancing in his eyes.
Ace of course being the nickname they had stuck you with since you were old enough to remember. Any family event youâd ever attended whenever there was any sort of game or sport going on the two boys always ensured you were on their team, likely because you were the only one close in age to them but you liked to tell yourself that it was also because the three of you always had fun together. They have always been so competitive and any time they won (largely due to their own efforts) they were sure to tell everyone that it was all because of you, that you were âthe ace up their sleeveâ even when you barely did anything. Hell most softball games you preferred to sit in the grass picking flowers while they ran circles around you like pro athletes, but it was sweet how they always made sure to include you and make you feel good about yourself.
âWell we agreed you two goons wouldnât scare him awayâ you remind them with a playful roll of your eyes and a swat to Bennyâs shoulder when you finally reach the doorway.
You can see Frankieâs appreciative gaze roam over you from head to toe and as he pulls his bottom lip between his teeth and nervously adjusts his ball cap you know heâs itching to say something to you but probably weighing the pros and cons in his head about the two extra sets of ears hearing whatâs meant only for you and so you decide for him. You shove past your two cousins, quickly tell them you love them and not to wait up and push them far enough back in the house so you can slam the door shut, finally leaving you on the porch with just Frankie.
âHiâ you breathe out, a smile spreading across your lips. He looks casual but deliciously handsome in a pair of dark tan khaki pants and an untucked light blue button down with the sleeves rolled up, putting his tanned and muscular forearms on display. He still has his infamous Standard Oil hat on, hints of chocolate brown curls peeking out from underneath it. You donât think youâve actually ever seen him without it, come to think of it. You try to picture him without it and an image just doesnât come.
âYou look beautifulâ he tells you, a hint of shyness in his tone and a blush rises in your cheeks that didnât come from a makeup stick.
âThank you. Iâm sorry about tweedle-dee and tweedle-A-D-D in thereâ you joke, gesturing a thumb over your shoulder at your two cousins who are currently fighting each other over who gets to look through the small pane of glass next to the door to watch your interactions with Frankie on the front step.
âUnfortunately Iâm very used to itâ he quips, giving you a warm smile. âShall we?â He asks, sweeping an arm out towards his truck idling at the curb and you nod your head and lead the way.
Before you reach the truck however Frankie jogs up behind you to brush past and ensures he reaches the passenger door handle before you do and opens it wide, offering you a hand to help you up and inside. You both decide to ignore the whooping yells and hands slamming on the glass next to the door at the top of the walkway behind you.
âLetâs get the hell out of here, shall we?â You offer once Frankieâs climbed into the driver's seat next to you and he chuckles but nods his head.
âWith pleasureâ he agrees and pulls the truck away from the curb.
Youâre driving for nearly an hour. Frankie had apologized already on several occasions, admonishing himself for not preparing you beforehand to make sure you wouldnât be too hungry when he picked you up. You tell him it's fine countless times but he still admits he shouldâve discussed his plan with you ahead of time.
âHey, if what you say is true and these really are the best tacos Iâve ever had, youâll not only be forgiven but Iâll be glad I was ravenous by the time we get thereâ you tell him and finally he seems to accept it and offers you a small smile, hand going to the dial on the radio to turn the classic rock tunes up just a little bit for the last few minutes of your drive.
The drive is nice. The ocean follows along in your journey when you look out your window and the way the sun sits in the sky you know itâll be threatening to set not long after you arrive at your destination. Truth be told you were a little nervous when you first started driving and Frankie mentioned how long the trip would be. You worried that you wouldnât have much to chat about or that it might get awkward but it had been anything but. Besides Frankieâs little bouts of anxiety about whether or not he shouldâve mentioned to you what time youâd actually be eating, everything was going better than you had expected. The conversation seemed to flow easily between the two of you. You had enough jumping off points, with both of you having more than your fair share of stories or anecdotes about Will and Benny. You shared stories of your youths while Frankie caught you up on some of the more recent goings-on with them that you hadnât been privy to since, before recently, you obviously spent a lot less time with them in your adult years versus the childhood ones. Before long the conversations shifted more to yourselves and your own personal lives and before you knew it Frankie was pulling the truck into a crowded parking lot in front of the beach.
You make your way through the throngs of people on the boardwalk, Frankieâs warm hand on your lower back a steadying presence as he guides you through the crowds towards the brightly painted green and yellow food truck off in the not-too-far distance. Your mouth is watering already and youâre not sure whether itâs for the tacos or the man on your left with the broad shoulders and thick arms but a gentle, calming touch.
If you had to venture a guess, it would be for the latter.
Frankie, to his credit, was absolutely right about the tacos. Youâre halfway through your third one when you finally tap out and call it quits, unable to possibly stomach another bite - despite how delicious they are.
âI canât. I want to, but I canâtâ you admit defeat to whatâs left of your dinner, tossing your napkin on top of your paper plate and holding your hands up in surrender and the corner of Frankieâs mouth curls up into a smirk.
âTheyâre good right?â He grins at you from across the picnic table while he stuffs the last bite of his own into his mouth and you roll your eyes dramatically at how good in fact they were.
âThey were amazing, seriously. Well worth the drive and the waitâ you tell him sincerely and then before you can talk yourself out of it you reach across the table to place your hand on top of his and give a little squeeze with your fingers.
âThank you for dinner. Iâm um⌠really glad you asked me out tonightâ
That confession earns you an ear to ear grin from Frankie who swallows down the last bit of his dinner and then turns his hand palm-up so he can hold your fingers in his grasp.
âMe too. But, the nightâs not overâ he offers with a playful quirk of his eyebrow.
âThereâs more?â Your brow line lifts to your forehead. âIâm going to need a few minutes to digest firstâ you laugh, placing a hand over your stomach and Frankie chuckles but nods his head in agreement.
âTake all the time you need,â he tells you.
The sun is beginning its descent from the sky as you sit at the table a while longer, happily chatting about everything and nothing. You ask Frankie more about his young daughter and canât help the smile that tugs at your lips the way his face lights up when he speaks about her or shows you his favourite pictures or videos of her on his phone.
With your food finally settled youâre back to wandering the boardwalk again with Frankie leading the way. He stops you at an ice cream truck and you groan at the idea of having to shove more food into your stomach but the childish grin and teasing nudge to your side with his elbow convinces you to take him up on his offer anyway and you ask for small scoop of the bright orange Tiger Stripe flavour in a dish while Frankie opts for a waffle cone of classic Mint Chocolate Chip.
With no small effort you manage to finish the sweet dessert and toss your garbage into a nearby receptacle and Frankie nudges your shoulder with his and gestures with an outstretched arm towards the beach.
âWanna go walk it off?â He suggests and you give him an easy smile, more than excited about taking a romantic walk down the beach at sunset with him.
The warm sand squishes between your toes as you walk the length of the beach. Frankie had insisted on carrying your shoes for you when you opted to take them off; the strappy sandals hanging from the fingertips of his right hand while his left brushes experimentally against the back of your right and you turn your palm towards him and he wastes no time taking hold, your fingers interlacing. You smile and press a little closer into his shoulder.
âThis is perfectâ you sigh as soft waves lap at your feet and the sun bids itâs final adieu for the evening, disappearing just past the horizon on the other side of the ocean.
âSo I did good?â Frankie smirks at you and you let out a little laugh, nodding your head.
âTen out of ten would recommendâ you answer without hesitation.
âRecommend to who? If you think Iâm taking Benny on a date next youâre poorly mistakenâ he jokes and it earns an outburst of laughter from you as you grab onto his forearm with your free hand and lean further in still.
âYou guys could make a pretty cute coupleâ you tease and he rolls his eyes, shaking his head in laughter.
âAlready got the prettiest Miller on my arm, thank you very muchâ he affirms and your giggles die down as the blush re-emerges and you turn your gaze down to the sand at your feet and squeeze his arm just a little tighter as a thank you to his easy compliment.
You walk a little while longer, your fingers still entwined and your free hand wrapped around his arm thatâs holding your hand, snuggling as close as possible while you continue to chat and joke and tease each other.
Being with Frankie seems so easy. Normally you were so nervous during first dates and itâs been so long since youâve actually been on one you could barely remember what it normally feels like but youâre certain itâs never felt like this. You felt comfortable. And maybe a lot of that had to do with the fact that youâve already met with and hung out with him on numerous occasions now there was less to be nervous about. But you think itâs mostly him. Heâs so easy going and calm to be around; he just puts you at ease with one upward curve of his lips or the way his soft brown gaze seemingly bores into your very soul with a single look.
Besides that, you knew he must be a pretty decent guy or Will and Benny wouldâve had something (aside from friendly teasing) to say about it. They were the big brothers you never had growing up, always looking out for you until your lives took you all down very separate paths and if they trusted Frankie with you, you knew you were in good hands.
Hands that were currently, mind you, smoothing up and down your sides as Frankie pressed you into the passenger door of his pickup as you stood on the street outside your temporary home saying your goodnights.
âKiss meâ you breathe into the limited space between your two bodies that are thrumming with unspent energy.
Not bothering with a verbal response, Frankie closes the distance between you, his lips capturing yours finally for that first kiss youâve been craving since he picked you up hours ago. He tastes like mint and chocolate, and although normally it would be one of the last options you go for at the ice cream shop, the way it tastes on Frankieâs tongue instantly makes it your new favourite.
The energy in the cab of his truck the whole ride back had been tangible, his right hand on your thigh, yours trying not to dig into the plush material of the seats as you tried to focus your mind on anything other than ordering him to pull the truck into park so you could crawl into his lap and thank him properly, the way you wanted to so badly.
âHermosa,â Frankie groans, his mouth trailing now from your lips down your jaw and to the side of your throat as his hands grip your hips. The scruff of his beard brushes the delicate skin of your neck when he nuzzles further into you and heat instantly pools in the lower part of your belly, causing a little moan to slip out. You feel your breath quicken, heart rate speeding up to keep pace with Frankieâs that you can feel through your clothes with how closely heâs pressed against you. Your arms raise to wrap around his neck, hands playing with the soft curls at the back of his head, running your fingers through them (something youâd been dying to do since the first time you met him, if youâre being honest with yourself).
âShouldâve taken me back to yoursâ you whisper against his ear as he continues to nip, lick and kiss at your throat.
âSantiâs on my goddamn couchâ he groans, annoyed.
You remembered, now that heâs said it. Santiago, another military buddy of your cousins that youâd met a few times and one of Frankieâs best friends, had been having problems with his girlfriend and a week ago she had actually kicked him out of their shared apartment and with you taking up residence in Will and Bennyâs guest room, that left Frankieâs couch.
âShitâ you mutter. You donât dare take him inside to your room. Though the house looks dark and the boys are probably asleep, thatâs not something youâre going to chance. At least not on a first date. You donât need their judgment, nor do you need Frankie holding anything back from you due to the unfortunate circumstances.
His mouth is back on yours, unable to stay away from it for long it seems. His tongue pushes inside and strokes alongside yours, causing a little shiver to run down your spine. He licks into your mouth, exploring every cavern and swallowing all your little whimpers and whines. Frankie was an amazing kisser. You canât help but wonder how talented his tongue may be elsewhere; the thought alone sending a fresh wave of arousal through you and causing another moan to slip out which Frankie responds to with one of his own. His right hand leaves your hip and goes to your thigh next, gently raising your leg off the ground to wrap around him and a gasp escapes you when his hand slips under the hem of your dress and trails upwards towards your hip.
âFuck, Frankieâ you breathe, pulling back just enough so you can start peppering kisses to his strong jawline.
âTell me to stop, fuck, you need to tell me stopâ Frankie pleads. You can feel his obvious desire for you pressed into your stomach as his left hand moves down to grope your ass and pull you even closer against him.
âMmm, donât want toâ you hum into his throat and he groans in desperation, rocking his hips into you and causing a delicious bit of friction where you need it most. Your whole body is tingling, feeling like you could combust at any moment. Your muscles are tense, hands fighting for purchase on any part of him they can grab onto, eager to keep him from convincing himself to pull away from you.
Just when you feel him begin to pull back you do the only thing that comes to mind and turn in his grasp and reach for the back passenger door of the crew cab, swinging it open and pulling him back towards you by the collar of his shirt.
âFuck, Sweetheartâ he stops dead in his tracks, feet outside on the ground still while your ass hits the back seat so youâre seated sideways on the seat, facing him.
âLook, I might not be up for Gentleman of the Year Award or anything, but Iâm not⌠I canât have our first time be in the back of my truck. You deserve so much better than thatâ
Your brain doesnât miss how he says âfirst timeâ like it implies that there will be more times, and god you hope there is. And while you donât disagree with him that fucking in his car like teenagers isnât maybe the most romantic way to do this, you still need something and you donât want this night to be over yet.
âJust⌠come fool around with me a little bitâ you shrug, coy little grin tugging at the corners of your lips and you see on his adorable face the moment his resolve crumbles. Heâs hopping up into the truck in a flash, slamming the door shut behind him. He pushes you back onto the bench seat so youâre flat on your back and finally rips his hat off his head and tosses it carelessly somewhere to the floor and youâre in a fit of giggles at the playfulness of it all. The laughter dies on your lips however when heâs kneeled before your spread legs and drags your knees up to his hips and presses himself down on top of you, capturing your mouth in a heated kiss while his lower half grinds into yours.
âIs this OK?â He murmurs into the side of your face as his kisses trail towards your throat.
âMmm hmmâ you nod frantically. âMore than OKâ you promise.
He hums into your throat and brings his right hand to your breast, his large hand covering the mound and gently massaging the soft flesh, kneading and squeezing just right as your little moans and the way your back arches to push your chest further into his touch encourages him.
âFuck,â he growls before shoving the front of your dress and cups of your bra down so he can get his mouth on bare skin.
He pulls away from your throat and shuffles down slightly, leaning down to swirl the tip of his tongue around the pert bud and then gently pull it into his mouth. He alternates between sucking it into his mouth and teasing with quick flicks of his tongue while nimble fingers pay the other equal attention and you writhe underneath him, grinding into his leg, desperate for any friction you can create.
âPerfect titsâ he mumbles into your skin before his mouth switches sides. Your hands are in his hair, gently tugging and scratching over his scalp and the way he occasionally groans and grunts at your actions you know he likes it. You wish you werenât shoved inside the back of his pickup right now. Oh the things you would let his mouth do to you if you werenâtâŚ
After long minutes of attention spent on your breasts his mouth is finally back on yours. He moans into you when his tongue wraps around yours again and you decide to play a little dirty yourself and wrap your lips around his tongue and suck it into your mouth, just for a moment and then you release. You feel his hardened cock twitch against your hip when he grinds it into you.
âTell me what you want, Babyâ he asks between ragged breaths as his lips create a hot trail of open mouthed kisses down to your collarbone.
You decide to show him, rather than tell him, and reach for his right hand and bring it underneath your dress to the aching need between your thighs and he practically growls into your throat when he feels the damp spot thatâs already formed on your panties.
âOh my godâ he groans, taking his first two fingers and rubbing your lower lips over the soft, soaked lace.
âOh fuck, Frankie, you feel so goodâ you whine, not caring how wrecked you sound already.
His mouth covers yours again, his kiss hungry and needy as his fingers bravely dip under the waistline of your panties to finally touch your naked sex and push through the warm slick folds.
âOh my god, make me come baby, please. Fuck.â You beg, your hands wrapping around his neck again and grabbing on for dear life. Itâs been far too long and Frankie is quickly unraveling you into a mewling desperate mess.
âIâve got you, Hermosaâ Frankie promises, his breath hot against your ear now and you donât doubt that he does. His skilled digits are already driving you crazy and heâs barely begun. Maybe itâs because itâs been a while, or maybe Frankie just really knows his way around a pussy.
He plunges two fingers inside of you and you cry out at the welcomed intrusion, whimpering into his shoulder at how heâs nearly got you undone already.
âGod you feel fucking amazingâ he groans into your heated flesh.
âFuck Frankie, donât stop, pleaseâ you whimper.
He doesnât. His fingers continue their torturous assault, pumping in and out of you and occasionally coming out to rub tight little circles around your small bundle of nerves that causes your arm to shoot up in the air, palm of your hand pushing hard against the ceiling of the truck cab as your impending orgasm lingers threateningly.
âLet me touch you, pleaseâ you beg and Frankie growls in response before his free hand goes to his pants and nearly rips them open so he can push them down to his thighs and your hand immediately wraps around his throbbing length.
âHoly shitâ you breathe. Your fingers failing to quite reach all the way around his impressive girth. Heâs warm and heavy in your hand, precum steadily leaking from the head that you gather in your hand to use to coat down the rest of his length.
âChristâ Frankie grunts, unable to stop himself from thrusting his hips once to fuck into your hand. âShit Iâm sorry itâs um, been a whileâ he confesses shyly and you press a kiss to the corner of his mouth.
âFor me tooâ you tell him, easing his nerves. âGod Frankie, Iâm so closeâ
With that he pulls his hand away from you for only a moment, bringing it to his mouth to wet his fingers with his tongue and then theyâre back on your clit, experimenting between rubbing and circling and pressing and even lightly pinching until he finds out exactly what makes you squirm under him and he doubles his efforts, working you faster and faster with the pads of his fingertips until youâre coming hard and fast with his name on your lips as you rock into his hand to chase the pressure of his touch.
âOh fuck, thatâs itâ Frankie groans into the hollow of your throat, his fingers sticky and slick with your release. âGod youâre so beautifulâ he praises, pressing kisses to every inch of flesh he can reach.
His fingers continue to languidly stroke through your folds, easing you down from your high while his own breathing picks up at your continued actions below; practiced strokes of your hand wrapped around him while your thumb occasionally ghosts over his slit, gathering the evidence of his arousal and smearing it all over the thick and sensitive head.
âFuck, Iâm closeâ he warns, eyes screwed shut in concentration, his forehead now resting against yours. âFuck!â He curses again and then quickly sits up on his knees, causing your hand to fall away from him and he takes himself in hand to finish himself off, not wanting to make a mess all over you or your pretty dress. Not having much option he yanks his shirt up instead and coats his own stomach with white hot ropes of his release until heâs left heaving and panting on his knees before you, free hand clutched tight on your knee beside him, fingers digging in deep enough you think theyâll leave bruises.
Youâll wear them like a badge of honor.
âShit,â he breathes and then huffs out a little laugh. His eyes dart around for a moment and then he reaches into the little pocket on the back of the front passengers seat and pulls out a somewhat squished little pack of wet wipes (one of the conveniences of having a small child you presume, always lots of supplies around that adults might not otherwise think of keeping handy) and grabs a couple sheets and wipes up the mess he made of himself before shoving the wipes back into the pocket. Youâre staring up at him, tip of your pointer finger between your teeth and a coy grin playing on your lips.
That was by far the absolute hottest make out session youâd ever had. Where has Frankie Morales been all your life, and what had you done to deserve him now?
âAre you still OK? That was⌠OK?â He asks and itâs sweet how he doesnât even know how badly he just rocked your whole world.
âTen out of ten would recommendâ you retort teasingly, lifting your foot to push gently at his hip and he rolls his eyes playfully and lands a little swat to your thigh.
âSmartass. Maybe I oughta trade you in for Benny after allâ he quips. âGet a lot less lip I betâ
âHmm, but probably a lot less tongue tooâ you tease right back and he groans as you yank him down on top of you by his collar once more.
Youâre not quite finished with Frankie Morales just yet.

Ao3
Kinktober 2024 Masterlist
It had been three weeks since you had seen your boyfriend. Jake was at Lemoore for a joint-training exercise with the rest of the squad and the nightly phone calls between the two of you were sappy and you knew his buddies would tear him to pieces if they heard how pathetic Jake sounded when he whined about missing you.Â
âI just miss you so much,â Jake pouted over video chat, his hair messy and a bit longer than usual on top, falling over his tanned forehead. âItâs torture without you.âÂ
âI miss you too, baby, this bedâs too cold without you,â Jakeâs eyes squeezed closed and you knew that he was frustrated, not with you, but with the situation you found yourselves in. Again. During his last deployment you had been separated for six months and in that time you were only able to call twice thanks to the sensitive nature of the mission and it had driven you both insane. âYouâll be home soon, Jake.âÂ
âI know, darlinâ but it doesnât make it easier knowing youâre there alone when I should be there with you.â You sighed, wishing you could hold him and to run your fingers through his hair.
âYouâre right where you should be, Jake. Nix said this training is important for you guys.âÂ
âYouâre whatâs important to me,â Jakeâs green eyes were filled with love that had your heart swelling and breaking at the same time. âI wish I was there with you.âÂ
âYou knowâŚâ You trailed off, thinking of a way to distract him from feeling sad. âIf you were here right now, looking at me like that, Iâd know just how to cheer you up.â You pulled off your shirt, well, his shirt, exposing your bare chest to the chilly air of the bedroom. Jake inhaled sharply,
âDarlinâ, youâre killing me. Bradley could be back from his hop any minute.â You shrugged, adjusting the phone so he could watch you palm your own breasts, tilting your head back with a soft moan, putting on a show for your man. âShit, Iâm gonna put a chair in front of the door.â You pushed down your panties, flipping the camera around so he could watch. Your eyes shut as you started to work yourself up, you grinned when you heard Jake choke on air, having picked up his phone again.
âI wish you were here, Jake. Fuck, I miss you so much.âÂ
âI miss you too,â He groaned and you knew he was fisting himself. âFirst thing Iâm going to do when I get home is to spread you open for me and make you cum on my tongue.â You moaned for real this time, reaching into your bedside table for the small vibrator you spent a lot of time with when Jake was deployed and clicking it on. âGonna fuck you until you canât remember anything but my name.âÂ
âJaaaaaake,â You felt the burning need building inside of you, your toes curling as the vibrations hit just right.
âThatâs right, darlinâ, just think of the way my cockâs gonna feel stretching you out.â God, his filthy mouth was killing you. âThink about how itâs gonna feel when I come inside of you and then fuck it back into you until youâre begging me to stop.âÂ
You were seconds away from coming, you could feel it coming, your legs tensing up but the sound of the chair hitting the floor was like a bucket of cold water. You heard Bradley and Jake both curse before the call ended and you burst out laughing, phone dropping onto the bed beside you.Â
