Grantaire was an unaccepted Pylades. Always harshly treated by Enjolras, roughly repulsed, rejected yet ever returning to the charge, he said of Enjolras: "What fine marble!" -3.4.1
"The Brutus who killed Caesar was in love with the statue of a little boy. This statue was from the hand of the Greek sculptor Strongylion, who also carved that figure of an Amazon known as the Beautiful Leg, Eucnemos, which Nero carried with him in his travels. This Strongylion left but two statues which placed Nero and Brutus in accord. Brutus was in love with the one, Nero with the other. All history is nothing but wearisome repetition. One century is the plagiarist of the other."- Grantaire, 3.4.4
"hahah wow can you believe these guys, falling in love with statues that would definitely never love them back. What chumps. --Hey no reason but d'you ever think about how we keep making the same damn mistakes ,just humanity in general, not talking about myself specifically of course--"

And we’ve reached the political link!
“The whole of the monarchy is contained in the lounger; the whole of anarchy in the gamin.”
“Whoever you may be, if your name is Prejudice, Abuse, Ignorance, Oppression, Iniquity, Despotism, Injustice, Fanaticism, Tyranny, beware of the gaping gamin.”
The word “beware” conveys a sense of threat, implying that the gamin is dangerous to the authorities (given that France was a monarchy again). Hugo had similarly mentioned that Parisians were “cats” that could be stirred up into ferocious predators if they felt angry enough at injustice, suggesting that gamins - with their inherent subversiveness and hatred of “oppression” - could be key to this. In fact, they go further than simple rebelliousness, with Hugo tying them to “anarchy.”
The idealization of the gamin, however, continues, and here it’s uncomfortable in that Hugo implies their suffering grants them wisdom. While watching the gamins find joy in spite of their suffering was nice in that it showed how the arts and fun are necessary for all, this makes their poverty a lesson more than an injustice.
I love the ambiguity about what happens when he grows up, though. The comment comes right after the “beware,” suggesting that he’s a threat then. Still, we don’t know exactly how, adding some mystery to the implicit threat.

So, the little one begins to evoke a sense of threat. The overall tone is finally shifting towards a more serious note: the street child is “a thoughtful witness” of human sufferings and hard social realities. While he still maintains his ability to joke and laugh, there is an underlying sense that “he is on the verge of something else,” and this “something else” is menacing. I believe, this is where the motif of prospective revolt can be discerned. And it is also related to “the children of chance and the men of destiny,” created by the spirit of Paris.
I like how the gamin is contrasted to the lounger. Active vs. passive, anarchy vs. monarchy.

Brickclub 3.1.4 & 3.1.5 ‘He can be useful’ & ‘His boundaries’
I love @fremedon’s writeups of these chapters. I’m a little at sea with them myself.
Things I’ve noticed:
3.1.4. He Can Be Useful
Ellen’s explanation of how to understand “dawdling onlooker” is SO HELPFUL, THANK YOU.
So, we’re contrasting those who gawk and do nothing with those who have "exhaustless enterprise”--neither of which is the flaneur, a word I should probably take the time soon to understand better.
We here explicitly tie the inactivity of some Parisians to the continuance of the monarchy, the way we’ll later talk about the bourgeoisie and chairs and the unwillingness to rise up because they’re comfortable. Grantaire isn’t comfortable, but he’s certainly a passive and inactive watcher of political events--capable of standing up one day maybe, but we’re not there yet.
The “usefulness” of the gamin in the chapter title isn’t from the capitalist perspective I usually expect usefulness to refer to--rather, it seems to refer to the gamin’s capacity for anarchy and the overthrow of tyrannical governments.
That sure gives a sense of where this book’s loyalties are.
And yet, I don’t know why that’s the chapter title. It sounds like it’s going to be about the intrumentalization of these children’s for somebody’s purpose, and it isn’t. We hear Ecce Homo directly here, and we’re told whatever material they’re made of, the sculptor is God, and he can work remarkable things from them. Instead of their use, the chapter is about their inherent worth--even as it’s also about, I suppose, their use in revolutions.
3.1.5 His Boundaries
I love Ellen’s writeup of how the suburbs vs the town describes the actual sides of the battle, with the suburban National Guard enforcing the boundaries and the laws of Paris. I need to look for that this time through.
In this chapter we reach another of the common motifs in this story: the edges of things and the complicated nature of anything that’s a little bit one thing and a little bit another. We have both positive and negative versions of that--Valjean, Thenardier--but it’s very, very often a terrible thing to be. (See: the Gorbeau House.)
But this is about romantic loveliness and childhood freedom--even as it’s also about factories and quarries and dangerous man-made areas. This chapter says these places on the border are always melancholy, but also that they’re also original and individual and peculiar. In this chapter, they’re not at all inherently bad.
The switching between the urban mode and the rural for these children is triggered by the presence of an adult. Where they were playing aimless games with flowers in their hair when undisturbed, when an adult appears suddenly they must ply their various ways of making money.
If our two characters of the border are Valjean and Thenardier, Valjean feels much more like the contemplative rural walks and flowers, and Thenardier feels much more like the scrambling to get money by any means available.
These children, at least at this age, seem full of both capacities.
Both of these chapters have notable callbacks to Valjean: Ecce homo in the first, and in the second, the mention of one of those distant suburbs, Romainville--a place we’ve already associated with death.

Brickclub 3.1.2, “Some of His Distinguishing Marks,” 3.1.3, “He Is Agreeable,” and 3.1.4, “He Can Be Useful”
Donougher continues to be useful for the notes--and for a fresh perspective on the text--but the very plain prose that’s been more or less workable for most of the book up till now just cannot cope with these chapters. I’ve been rereading everything in FMA or Wilbour.
Taking three chapters together today, since they’re very short and I don’t have a lot of observations:
--@everyonewasabird and @pilferingapples had a really good exchange here about “Give to a being the useless, and deprive him of the needful, and you have the gamin.”
--“Paris begins with the gawper and ends with the gamin, two beings no other city achieves.” The word variously translated as “gawper” or idly curious” is baudad, a type which is to the flâneur what the glutton is to the gourmet.
--Shades of the convent refectory in the gamin’s pastime of looking for woodlice, millipedes, and daddy long-legs. Kids are gonna be kids.
--I do like Donougher’s translation of the line about gamins as proto-Romantics: “His natural inclination, and we say this with all due regret, would not be for the classical style.” Where all due regret = none whatsoever.
--Donougher also explains a possible source for the Mlle. Muche thing: Mlle. Mars was a brunette, and there is a kind of fly (mouche) called the March brown, or brune de mars.
--The gamin--as a type, in the lump--gets the ecco homo treatment in 3.1.4: “What clay is he made of? Ordinary mud. A handful of common soil, a breath, and behold, Adam! A God merely has to pass by. A God has always passed by the gamin. Fortune works on this little creature. By this word ‘fortune’ we mean, to some degree, chance.” Or Providence, one might say.

CHẨN ĐOÁN VÀ ĐIỀU TRỊ VIÊM QUANH KHỚP VAI (Periarthritis humeroscapularis)
Vai sưng to nóng. − Giả liệt khớp vai (đứt gân mũ cơ quay): + Xquang: Chụp khớp vai cản quang phát hiện đứt các gân mũ cơ quay do thấy hình cản quang của túi thanh mạc dưới mỏm cùng cơ delta, chứng tỏ sự thông thương HƯỚNG DẪN CHẨN ĐOÁN VÀ ĐIỀU TRỊ CÁC BỆNH CƠ XƯƠNG KHỚP 156 giữa khoang khớp và túi thanh mạc. 3.4. Phân loại các thể lâm sàng Theo Welfling (1981) có bốn thể lâm sàng của viêm quanh khớp vai: − Đau vai đơn thuần − Đau vai cấp − Giả liệt khớp vai − Cứng khớp vai 3.5. Chẩn đoán phân biệt − Đau vai do các nguyên nhân khác như đau thắt ngực, tổn thương đỉnh phổi, đau rễ cột sống cổ … − Bệnh lý xương: Hoại tử vô mạch đầu trên xương cánh tay. − Bệnh lý khớp: Viêm khớp mủ, viêm khớp do lao, viêm do tinh thể như gút hoặc calci hóa sụn khớp, viêm khớp dạng thấp, viêm cột sống dính khớp… 4. ĐIỀU TRỊ 4.1. Nguyên tắc chung Điều trị viêm quanh khớp vai bao gồm điều trị đợt cấp và điều trị duy trì. Cần kết hợp nhiều biện pháp khác nhau như nội khoa, ngoại khoa, vật lý trị liệu, phục hồi chức năng. 4.2. LMS Reporting
Navigate 3.1.4 LMS Reporting Quest
This is probably not going to be a very long post because of the limits we have for seeing a students grades and any report.
First we can see a graphic of their grade progress, called the Grade Report - this is what we use the most.
There is no choice of level here but it does quickly allow us to see both the actual (with zeros) and overall (without zeros) grade. We can also see areas where students struggle. In this case Quizzes and Tests.
The Scores and Activity Review allows for a list of all the students grades.
Again this the same thing a student can access. Grades can be sorted by types of activity or through a time window.
It is also possible to look at grades on a particular assignment by clicking on that assignment.
Next, we can run reports on groups of students using the Dashboard
Finally we can look at the gradebook if we want to see how students have done as a group.
I don’t look at this very often as we have a large variety of start and end dates, but I do look some times to see if students in general are having a hard time on a particular assignment.
In my role at Impact I use the first grade report the most. The reason is that we have advisement groups that we spend time checking up on every week. We look for students that are struggling and try to call, email, and have conferences to see what we can do to help, motivate, or push these students along.
As a teacher the dashboard is the best tool I have. I can sort by course and see the general trench in student grades. It allows me to see if the low grade is due to poor performance or to see if it is because they are behind. It also allows me to see how recently they have been active in the course.

Les Mis 365 1.3.2, 1.3.3, 1.3.4 (retroBricking)
Not too sorry to be catching up on these all at once, since I feel like the main points I'm noticing this time around are made across all three chapters:
- I have written before about Fantine-Enjolras parallels, but WOW, I'd kind of forgotten just how hard Hugo pushes it in their descriptions. Not enough that they're both Hot Superchaste Blond/es (eyes downcast chastely even! and the Amazingly Great Teeth!) with One True Passion. They're both starting out sculptures-with-a-soul, they've both got goddesses in their profile,
The difference, of course, is that Fantine's passion is very human and immediate (and unfortunately is Tholomyes).
And corresponding with that, she's described almost exclusively in terms of warmth and laughter at the outset, with only hints of the ferocity and coldness she'll later have to fall on for survival. And forget knowing an entire aspect of history, she doesn't even know her own personal past. She isn't just forgotten by history, she has no relationship with it at all, even a personal one. But she's still building the future; more than any of the other seven people here, she's the one who's investing in that future already, mentally and physically, because of her love. And what else? With no past, where else can she look but the future? But with no past, no experience to guide her, she can't see what the others already know is coming, and oh geez this hurts already.
- I am never over the tension in the women's relationships with each other here. And no , I don't mean ~sexy ~ tension. I mean the way they're obviously partly in competition, (or else, in Zephine and Dahlia's case, in a sort of pragmatic collaboration) the way they're on edge--they're all risking so much to have this little bit of luxury in their lives, these country outings and restaurant dinners, and they can't even totally enjoy it, because they've got to walk such a careful little road to keep it and still have their other work open to them; they will never ever get to relax the way the guys with them do.
My thoughts on Favourite and Fantine in particular and how much it's about the whole brilliantly awful system that encourages women to see each other as enemies in competition for some frankly lousy prizes would take up more time than I should probably spend on what's already a super late post.
-That said-- and I will try to go into it sometime when I'm feeling sharper-- I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEVER NOTICED THE ENGLAND-FRANCE THING THERE BEFORE. I mean, I am not sure what to make of it entirely, because I have just noticed it! But Favourite gets so much page time (relative to Zephine and Dahlia especially) there's no way she's just filler (Hugo honestly doesn't put filler in Les Mis anyway. No, REALLY. EVERYTHING CONNECTS SOMEHOW IT IS ABSURD.) So: Fantine is parentless except for the sky and the ground, she's the mother of Symbolic France in the book, innocent love going to...ugh, Tholomyes. I don't wanna insult anyone by saying Tholomyes represents them. Anyway! Favourite's been to England, her nickname is a reference to being a high-placed mistress in England (apparently; at least Hugo thought it was). She knows her parents, but gains nothing from it; her mother is actually a direct threat to her livelihood, and her father is only polite like a stranger, leaving her to fend for herself AND her mother. I feel CERTAIN political points are being made and I DON'T GET THEM, but I will think about this way too much for a while and see what I can come up with!
Translation nooootes: Okay, I officially give up on Rose as a reading translation. The language is just not working at all for me, especially in the very descriptive chapters. There's a lot of gratuitous modernizing of references into...still outdated references (the girls read " torrid romances of the railway novel kind" and wear "glad rags") which makes for some really bizarre anachronism and I don't see any advantage? But as a really really detailed sort of anti-Cliffnote it's excellent! The very fact that I can't settle into it as a reader helps me with analytical text study. I do not regret having this edition, unlike some (DENNNNYYYY!) Odd note for these chapters: Hapgood is apparently the only translator to note that Zephine's shawl is "single- bordered, imitation Indian shawl of Ternaux's manufacture". The others seem to go with, like, "brown" or "tan and limp" or other sensible abbreviations. IF I WANTED SENSIBLE ABBREVIATIONS I WOULDN'T BE READING HUGO DARN IT.
