LLUMEN - Force of Nurture

Polygon Heart from LLUMEN was quite the surprise for me. Been listening it quite a lot. So I decided LLUMEN's debut, The Memory Institute.

Quite the contract. The Memory Institute it harder and harsher sounding, with more typical lyrical content you would expect from a industrial act, like society is shit, fantasy. Polygon Heart is quite pleasant and softer, with lyrics about personal struggles on love and health. In a way typical lyrical content, but not really? Struggles with health is quite rare to hear.

The Memory Institute is more dance floor ready album, like this song Force of Nurture, which is the highlight for me. Overall I would say The Memory Institute is quite good album. You can sure hear the influences LLUMEN is inspired by and mixing the elements.

I wonder what direction LLUMEN's next album will take?

What's with darker electronic music and December?

Hello! Been awhile! Life has been busy. I've been getting more music, but haven't had the motivation to update.

Anyways, it's the holiday time and death month is over (marras in marraskuu menas "signs of death"). It's December. As the month changed to December, I realised something.

Why surprisingly many songs from bands I listen to have "December" in the title? Is there some meaning to December I'm missing? How about we explore few songs about December and try to solve this mystery.

Project Pitchfork - December Sadness

Cheery start. "December Sadness" is from Project Pitchfork's 1997 album "¡Chakra : Red!". Overall theme of the album is post-apocalytpic. Feels like there's a bit of a narrative going on throughout the album.

Previous songs decribe the situation in the society, like "2064 AD", main character's motivations on "God Wrote". Some of the songs are quite sexual. "December Sadness" describes a female character. Quite sad song, like depression. Very typical subject in the genre, to describe how depression or other mental illness feels.

Still, quite enjoyable song.

Assemblage 23 - December

Another cheery song, disguised in a club friedly coat. From Assemblage 23's 2016 album "Endure".

Whole album has a strong theme of "Overcoming your mental troubles". "Bravery"has a line "Sometimes waking up is an act of bravery". "December" is an album closer. It has a feeling of reaching lowest point, then overcoming it and realising everything is okay. Or is it about dying?

Weightless and complete A sudden sense of ease May your spirit carry on As the wind that shakes the trees

Still an amazing song, one of my favourites, even though the album is far from my favourite.

LLUMEN - Cold in December

Well, yes. December is a winter month. At least here in the north December is cold :D

"Cold in December" seems to be LLUMEN's most well known song. Appearing long before "The Memory Institute" album came out in 2016. Slowest song in this list.

Again, quite depressing sounding song. Too bad I can't find the lyrics to confirm. "Part of me that dies", "I can't move anymore". Longing someone?

So is December a depressing month?

For some it may be.

December is the Christmas month. Sharing, giving gifts. Seeing loved ones.

But there are people, who spend to the Christmas alone, because they have no loved ones. No money to buy gifts to anyone. Or get any food during Christmas. In Finland, during Christmas we also remember those have died over the years.

So yeah, it can be depressing. And stressful.
