The meaning of mistletoe by Endrina, first volume of The secret language of plants. @llendrinall I have read this charming story several times. The voice of the narration, with its fairy tale reminiscence, is something I really like. Endrina is a great author, it is worth reading their novel length fics.

What I like:

It's quite a simple binding, but something in it remind me of the old editions of my childhood. Reading it give me a special kind of joy, it's both, the comfort of this story and the childhood-like feeling this tome brings me while holding it

What I could do better:

I had problems with the guillotining of the edges, but went ahead [I had already lost a lot of material with a failed first printing]. I couldn't say what happened, but - for me - that mistake gives a Je ne sais quoi to the edition that I love. I don't know why, but when I was a child, back in the 70's, I had many books with the same feeling. The paper was a bit thicker than usual, and the edges weren't perfectly cut. I didn't realize, until I sat down to read this edition, that this binding conjures up memories of my childhood.

Special thanks: During the process, I had a severe case of printer hiccups (Or binder's brain hiccups, to be more precise) but @getfuckedblr hold my hand and helped me.

Harry Potter Fic Recs II

(Part the First)

Seeing as the first fic rec was ... somewhat more of a success than I was expecting (what the hell people i love you all), and gave me some excellent recs of my own, I’m doing a second one of these babies.  And probably a third eventually, considering the fics I have yet to read...

Nevermind that!  Onwards!

First and foremost: @llendrinall, blindingly superb author, I want to hug them and cry forever, instead I will be hugging my laptop screen and crying forever.  Their works in the fandom are: Life skills outside the curriculum, in which Harry runs away before he gets his Hogwarts letter to live on the streets of London and enjoy the important things in life, like cinema and museums, and picks up this weird posh ‘wizard’ kid with some seriously fascist friends; and the series The secret language of plants, which is SO AMAZING OH MY GOD.  Highlights include Awesome!Dad!Remus, Snape stealing a baby and not knowing what the fuck to do with it, ADHD Harry, magic via music, truly fabulous hair, and defeating evil wizards with the power of Freddie Mercury.

Next is @astolat, who I can’t believe I left off the last list because I’ve been reading her stuff since 2005.  She’s got quite a few fics in the fandom, but my personal favorites include Slithering (Draco Malfoy adopts a baby Nagini and it.  is.  ADORABLE.), House Proud (Harry’s house likes Draco better than him and wizarding lineages are fae???  it’s amazing), and Old Country (crossover with Supernatural mid-season three, in which Dean Does Not Approve of the DADA Professor, makes friends with goblins, adopts about 72 kids and is the Hufflepuffiest Hufflepuff to ever Puff, while Sam the Slytherin scares the heck out of everybody and Dean just cannot figure out why. (Warning--Wincest, though if you stop midway through Christmas break you can avoid it entirely.  Not really my thing either but my god this fic is worth it.))

Wyste’s Harry Potter and the Problem of Potions is a full-on seven-year rewrite of the series that is so, so good, starting with the premise that Harry Potter’s favorite thing is chemistry, and therefore, Potions.  It’s absolutely full of the wry, constant humor of the first books, which I love, seriously I can’t stop laughing when reading this, it’s so good.  Contains magical candy, Severus Snape being Harry’s favorite teacher even though he’s no good at it and probably evil (Harry has low standards, he can work with this), Harry accidentally adopting people, EVIL KITTEN DRACO MALFOY, Grimmauld Place being the BEST HOUSE EVER Harry will FIGHT YOU, Hermione constantly trying (in vain) to introduce logic to the wizarding world, magical kittens made of Scrubbin’ Bubbles, Hermione elected as the leader to run the war against Voldemort, taking over Azkaban, and the possibility of Polyjuice addiction.  Don’t just walk to this fic, run to it.

evansentranced is a superb author and has many short Harry Potter works, but the two long series, I will confess, are my favorites.  Magical Relations is a series rewrite of what might happen if Dudley Dursley also got a letter from Hogwarts, including Slytherin!Harry to get away from Dudley, inter-house study groups, Hermione and Neville as The Best Gryffindors, sneaky sneaky Slytherins, How To Manage Vernon Dursley: A Guide by Dudley Dursley, so much character growth, and Harry’s adorable crush on Padma Patil.  The Library of Elvish Lore follows the adventures of a Harry abandoned at the age of six, who comes to the eventual conclusion that he is an elf.  No, not a house elf, obviously he is a forest elf.  The Dursleys made that mistake, you know, but he knows what he is.  Contains Harry driving Hermione absolutely batty, Draco discovering that being friends with a forest elf is the most frustrating thing ever, FREEING THE HOUSE ELVES AND TEACHING THEM TO BE FOREST ELVES, Voldemort likely being known as ‘that terrible teacher’ for the rest of eternity, and the Forbidden Forest being deemed ‘adorable’.

@no-gorms (scaramouche) has only one work, but it’s a goodie.  Not Quite the Shilling has Harry returning to Hogwarts as a teacher and pretty much features Harry being amazingly chill, living his best life and getting some actual goddamn therapy, with a side order of Snape being amazingly frustrated at everything, up to and including his newfound youth courtesy of some truly epic second-year potions explosions. (Snape/Harry, fully adult, fully consenting, fully amusing.)

oliversnape is an incredibly prolific writer, and I have barely made a dent in their works.  However, my current favorites are Far Beyond a Promise Kept (in which Harry gets a fake!dad in Severus Snape for the summer due to a dangerous convict, but is holding out hope he can get a real dad out of the bargain), and To Recollect the Future (at Snape’s death, he and Harry are thrown back to Harry’s first year, and together must find their way back, while trying desperately to change the future.)

@ibelieveinahappilyeverafter and Kasena’s Time Twister series is to die for, I am so serious right now.  Draco Malfoy time-travels back to first year, an eighteen-year-old in an eleven-year-old body, and must figure out how to fix things so that the future he’s come from never comes to pass.  This would be so much easier if he weren’t sorted into Gryffindor.  And if teeny-Potter weren’t so gods-curst adorable.  How do eleven-year-olds act, anyway?  He doesn’t need this stress.

Katsala has several works, most of them gorgeous short pieces that I highly recommend checking out--however, my guilty pleasure is The Trouble With Time Turners series, which is delightful, hilarious crack that I cannot recommend enough.  Includes Best Friends!Draco and Luna, accidental time travel swallowing the ministry, fourth year as viewed by some Very Done adults, Cedric Diggory dressed as Elvis, Draco as Harry Potter’s personal virtue guard, and the loss of a very good turkey sandwich.

This year was the first time I actively participated in the Drarry fandom. I started this recommendation blog, and I wrote a handful of fics. 2022 had a lot of ups and downs, but all the fics I read brought so much happiness to my life.

Thank you to the wonderful writers, artists, fest mods, recommenders, and fellow fans out there. There is so much beauty and love out there, and I am grateful to have encountered it.

The meaning of dandelions, by Endrina. This is the second volume of "The Secret Language of Plants".

As with most of my bindings, this book is "not perfct" at all, yet it joins my bibliographic collection of beloved imperfections. I like how it turned out despite everything.

This tome is full of errors due to my lack of concentration. I think I should change the name of this blog to "Adventures of an ADD fic binder". As some of my worst ADD days, yesterday wasn't the best day for me to try anything! The thing is, I had a great time binding this weekend, so no amount of mistakes will take that away. I still like my little green book.

Unlike volume 1, this time I remembered to put the headbands, yet I forgot the bookmark. More importantly, I got the series name wrong on the spine!

What I like?

I like the green cover, and how it looks next to its companion, the yellow tome. Likewise, the little dandelion seed on the back cover really charms me.

What could I have done better?

Apart from placing the correct title of the series?, I could have transferred the HTV with less temperature. There are plate marks on the cover.

I should have added the endpapers - I had them ready and forgot!

Plus, add the bookmark.

Annabeth Chase is a Slytherin. Why?

Reason n° 1:

In Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods, the Athena chapter states that "The snake symbolized wisdom from the earth".

And what is Slytherin's animal ? A giant snake that petrifies, just like Medusa.

Reason n°2:

In The Meaning of Dandelion, by @llendrinall , chapter 9, The Riots and The Night Nobody Slept, it is stated that "Wisdom requires you to have the information, cunning is about finding a solution even when you don't have all the information available. Cunning is about what to do with the little information you possess."

Do I even need to quote Annabeth's epic solo death quest? The whole quest is her beating everyone on her path with little to no information and her observation skill.

Reason n°3:

In chapter 19 of The Meaning of Geranium, It's always somebody else's fault (same author, same series), it's said about Slytherins that "Finding alternatives was their defining trait together with ambition."

Annabeth works on different strategies, so alternatives from the first strategy. Her fatal flaw is hubris, basically thinking she can fix everything: the ambition of change, putting her parents together, Luke back on her side and rebuilding Manhattan.

She took a knife for Percy, so reckless to the point of suicidal stupidity, kinda Gryffindor.

She worked hard to get a quest, she was loyal to her mom, still loyal to Chiron, so she has some Hufflepuff traits.

She's the daughter of the goddess of wisdom and she has a lot of knowledge on Greek myths and architecture, Ravenclaw behavior.

But those arguments are not enough to sort her in any of these three houses: she belongs in Slytherin.

So if you're thinking of writing a HP x PJO fic, don't sort her in Gryffindor because of Tartarus, she's way more of a Slytherin.

B-b-but the Golden Trio you say; overthrow the House system instead you dumbass. It's easy, have a demigod studying unions to help Hermione for the SPEW and then realize that the House system is meaningless because 1) you don't win anything at the end of the year except bragging rights and decorations, the latter can be changed by anyone good at Transfiguration and pranks 2) so nothing forces you to win points because you produce those with your conduct 3) the only thing preventing you from it is peer pressure but if no one cares then it's alright 4) house unity solves studying problems. Or something similar. Just don't sort in Gryffindor when you can overthrow the House system.

It's funny to think that The Secret Language of Plants is one of my favourite fanfics and if it weren't for some coincidences I probably would never have read it. I'd just finished Secrets, which has Severus/Remus as a side paring and I got curious about this ship (it was a couple I'd never thought about) so I went looking for more; In the Severus/Remus tag I found The Meaning of Mistletoe, that have an interesting summary and it was short 😅 so decided to give it a try; I really enjoyed! And it ends with a plot twist!

Was when I went to the series page – 373k intimidated me a little 🙈 especially after finishing reading a very long fic, I almost added part 2 to my infinite Mark for Later list but I decided to give it a try. And I definitely didn't regret it! It was a spectacular fic!!! Has everything and more – romance, comedy, mystery, angst and my many many many tears. 🤧🥲

There's poetry in Endrina's writing style, it's so eloquent and gorgeous, the foreshadowing, the transition between povs, the characterization of each character, the redemption arches (Narcissa's mainly), the plot twists, Harry's magic... SO GOOD!! 🤯

If you need one more reason to read this fic: it made me LOVE Percy, Percy The Worst!
