I thought I’d do a review of one of my all time favourite movies: The Lizzie McGuire Movie!
The movie starts with Lizzie at school and she’s about to graduate, she has to do the graduation speech but she trips and causes a huge mess on stage (this is one of the funniest parts of the film, it’s soooo funny!)
After this they go on a school trip to Italy, where Lizzie soon finds out she’s going to be sharing a room with Kate (which she’s not happy about!) however her mood soon changes when she meets Paolo, an Italian pop star and part of a duo with a girl called Isabella.
This is where things get really complicated because Lizzie and Isabella look exactly alike (both actresses are played by Hilary Duff, she’s such a talented actress, that’s why she’s my favourite!) and Lizzie has to fill in for her because her and Paolo have broken up!
Lizzie keeps sneaking out of the hotel to pretend to be her lookalike and do all sorts of modelling and fashion photo shoots (who wouldn’t want to spend all day getting dressed up and trying on new dresses?) Luckily Gordo and Kate cover for her by pretending she’s sick.
Eventually Gordo meets the real Isabella and discovers Paolo’s scheme to embarrass Lizzie to get revenge on his ex, luckily his plan backfires and he gets embarrassed.
In the end Lizzie and Isabella get to perform “What Dreams Are Made Of” on stage for millions of lucky fans (that song is one of my all time favourites, although it’s not on my best song playlist because I’d probably listen to it exclusively on repeat!)
Tumblr media
(Lizzie looks so nice here, her hair and makeup look so cute! She is such a fashion icon and I wish I could be as pretty as her!)
What I liked about this film: everything! The story, the music, the jokes! It’s all incredible!
What I disliked about this film: the lack of Miranda!
Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How The Lizzie McGuire Movie shaped my childhood (and no I'm not exaggerating)
Tumblr media
I couldn't write a collection of film blogs without including the best early 2000's Disney film ever made (apart from the Cheetah Girls of course).
Now I know what you're thinking, why is she recommending a film targeted to teenagers? But here's the thing, even my mum enjoys watching this movie! Although, it is rated PG it doesn't mean it lacks the wit and comedy of 'adult' films.
Lizzie embarks on a school trip to Rome with her classmate; some she gets on with well and others not so much. Somehow she manages to get herself caught up in a media frenzy with Italian gossip pages. She gets mistaken for Isabella, who is an Italian pop star (aka Hilary Duff in a brown wig). At the picturesque Trevi Fountain in the heart of Rome, Lizzie bumps into (a very gorgeous) Paolo who is Isabella's singing partner.
Don't worry, I won't drone on about the plot as I don't want to give away any spoilers. However, Lizzie gets taken into a whirlwind romance around the glamorous city whilst trying not to get caught by her grumpy teacher Ms Ungermeyer.
The mise en scene of Rome and it's famous sights, the contrast between Lizzie's costumes as a student compared to when she is dressed like a pop star; it makes the audience want to book the next flight out to Rome!
Even now as an adult, I still fantasise over finding a Paolo who will sing to me. Which takes me to my next point, not being bias; but the soundtrack for this movie is what takes it to the next level. The hit song 'This is what dreams are made of' performed in one of the best scenes in this film will forever live rent free in my head.
It goes without saying, give this film a watch. and I am certain you will be looking at Ryanair flights to Rome by the end of it.

I’M GLAD MY MOM DIED BY JENNETTE MCCURDY
MY RATING: ★★★★★
As someone who grew up in the ‘00s and ‘10s, I had the privilege to observe great young talent at its peak. There were a lot of television shows made for kids that I can safely say they no longer make, such as Phil of the Future, That’s So Raven, Kim Possible, Lizzie McGuire, All That, The Amanda Show, etc. Among those titles is iCarly, which is probably one of the last shows of that era of children’s TV. In iCarly stars Jennette McCurdy as Carly’s best friend, who stole the hearts of many as the character is probably one of the coolest people on TV, including mine. I used to love Sam and deeply empathized with her character due to her harsh background and I also adored her sarcastic sense of humor. As a kid, I used to wish I was as funny or as talented as the cast because of the life I believed they had, and I think a lot of people my age also believed that child actors lived glamorous lives.
In recent years, however, as what often happens with growing up, the bubble that held onto fond memories of these shows had been popped. Child actors had come out talking about how terrible it was to be a child star and the abuse and exploitation they’d experienced from the various adults in their lives. As an adult, I think back to those shows and realize that those actors I once admired for the glamorous life I thought they lived had given up their childhoods for mine. Jennette McCurdy, who played Sam, and did a wonderful job of leaning into the humor of the show to the point where no one could see that anything was wrong, was among one of those actors.
McCurdy’s book was really a surprising one. I did not pay much attention to tabloids as a child as the internet wasn’t as easily accessible then and I did not make it a habit to purchase celebrity magazines, so I wasn’t aware of how her relationship with her mother was. But her book, I’m Glad My Mom Died, told the whole story with surprising detail, such as including a bit about her crush on Frankie Muniz and how her “impure thoughts” about him could have made her not be in touch with her Holy Spirit. It was an easy read, but at the same time very difficult to get through due to the topics discussed.
I’m not going to go much into reviewing the actual content considering it’s a memoir, but I will say that Jennette McCurdy is a gifted writer whose work I would love to read more of. She talks about having written a script before, and I wish I could get a copy of it somehow. The writing flows well and makes it easy to get from page to page.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who grew up watching iCarly and even those who didn’t. This book, along with the docuseries titled Quiet on Set, is a real wakeup call regarding the horrors that child actors go through and why so many of them like Christy Carlson Romano and Alyson Stoner have been vocal about their experiences and aim to protect the kids craving stardom today. All I have left to say is I’m glad her mom died, too.

¡Ay, Mija!: My Bilingual Summer in Mexico by Christine Suggs
In this bilingual, inventive, and heartfelt debut, graphic novel talent Christine Suggs explores a trip they took to Mexico to visit family, embracing and rebelling against their heritage and finding a sense of belonging.   Sixteen-year-old Christine takes their first solo trip to Mexico to spend a few weeks with their grandparents and tía. At first, Christine struggles to connect with family they don’t yet share a language with. Seeing the places their mom grew up—the school she went to, the café where she had her first date with their father—Christine becomes more and more aware of the generational differences in their family. Soon Christine settles into life in Mexico, eating pan dulce, drawing what they see, and growing more comfortable with Spanish. But when Mom joins their trip, Christine’s two worlds collide. They feel homesick for Texas, struggle against traditions, and miss being able to speak to their mom without translating. Eventually, through exploring the impacts of colonialism in both Mexico and themselves, they find their place in their family and start to feel comfortable with their mixed identity.
Review: I have really been loving the YA graphic memoirs coming out lately -- Messy Roots by Laura Gao comes to mind (review here) -- and ¡Ay, Mija! is another wonderful YA graphic memoir.
Creator Christine Suggs chronicles their first time visiting relatives in Mexico by themselves. Along the way, you as the reader to get to know Christine's teenage worries and struggles as they navigate this particular summer at a crucial time in their life. They explore their mixed race identity, their body image, their queerness, and their relationship to their heritage and speaking with their family.
The bold and colorful art is delightful, and the extra touch of the little cartoon on Christine's shoulder reminded me of Lizzie McGuire in the best possible way. But what blew me away the most was how the graphic memoir followed through on the title -- "My Bilingual Summer in Mexico." Much of the dialogue is in Spanish with no translation, and I loved that. I have a soft spot for any kind of multilingual storytelling, and this is a fantastic example of that.
This is an easy recommendation -- get this delightful, heartfelt graphic memoir now!
Recommendation: Get it now!

Girl-Centric Games: Quantity Over Quality
Ah, girl-centric stuff, where options for girls (and girly-girls/feminine at heart) were on the forefront, especially within the 2000s. Strawberry Shortcake, Bratz, Barbie, Totally Spies, Trollz, MLP, Winx, Lizzie McGuire, LPS, MyScene, etc. Especially with games from MMOs to console games to flash games.
Although, with girl games specifically, why is it that most of them are considered “shovelware” by those who talk about them?
But before we get into that, what defines it as a “girl-game” to be specific? It usually means a game catered to girls/women, a game that is usually played by girls/women, or both. It could also be a game that invokes a feeling of relaxation and/or coziness to it.
Within the realm of girl games, there are plenty of games that can be considered quality-filled such as Barbie Girls, Devilish Hairdresser, Super Princess Peach, Style Savvy, Hamtaro, etc. although the idea of girl games are games catered to female audiences are quantity-filled shovelware. One series that may uphold that idea are the Imagine series which were developed and/or published by Ubisoft.
The Imagine series are games catered to female audiences with storylines but what’s strange are two specific games: Ballet Star and Ice Champions. Now, when seeing gameplay of these games, the art style is way different and looks like it has more quality into the game itself. Come to find out that these games are JP properties, developed by Spike, that were localized under Ubisoft. These games are KuruKuru Princess: Figure de KiraKira Koori no Angel & KuruKuru Princess: Yume no White Quartet. This also includes Master Chef since, that too, is a localized import of a JP game named Edamoto Naomi no Shiawase Kitchen: Kakushi Aji wa Anata ga Kimete ne.
This doesn’t stop there since games such as GBA Petz (Vet, Dogz, Hamsterz 2) are also JP properties that Ubisoft have also localized. These games are Himawari Veterinary Clinic, Kawaii Koinu, and Hamster Club 3. Two non-Ubisoft games, Princess on Ice and Pretty Rockin (Happy Star Band) were also localized as Princess on Ice and Making the Music in US/Europe which the US had the original style by the time Pretty Rockin was released. I don’t know why anyone reviewing these games hasn't noticed this but that’s probably just me.
These specific games have the capacity to grab the attention of girls alike yet their localization has made them seen as typical shovelware, which likely pushes away any girl by the cover alone. Though, this could be a US thing since it’s most likely that girl-centric games are not good in quality but in quantity since they could just create a bare bones game, plaster a ‘Made for Girls’ sticker on it, and be done with it because the sales are what truly matters. This doesn’t help that most girl sites nowadays are either shut down or feature games that are akin to shovelware.
On the other hand, there have been games that have attracted female/feminine audiences such as Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, The Sims, Tomodachi Life, Princess Peach Showtime, the Atelier series, and the Nikki series. This could also be that these games have good gameplay and contain more quality than most shovelware games. So, hope isn’t all that lost with girl-centric games since there are girls + women that are interested in games whether they’re geared to women or not and I hope more unapologetic girl games come out with more quality than quantity.

I just had...like...the realization that I...wanna watch Disney's Z-O-M-B-I-E-S again????
And this was sparked by a memory I had yesterday of when my friend, who had a crush on me, gave me a bunch of red paper hearts that had a bunch of love song lyrics on them
And you may think "Awww so sweet!!!" But actually, this was like a day after I was like "I don't... really have a crush on you back? And also I have a partner and also I think I may aromantic tbh. So can we just stay friends?"
And this was like straight up early in the morning when it happened. And I was like "AWWW, hey these are really cute but this isn't bc of the crush thing, right?" Because we had already established I loved the paper hearts he made
And he was like "No, not at all!"
LIAR. THEY HAD SO MANY CHEESEY LOVE LYRICS INSIDE OF THEM
And I honestly don't remember any of them EXCEPT for Ordinary because that's the one that initially tipped me off. Because even tho I fuckin hated that movie I like...really liked DCOMS.
(I got off on a tangent about DCOMs under this because I am probably not neurotypical and I'm nonlinear.)
For reference, I've seen almost every single DCOM from 2009 onward except Spin, Under-wraps (apparently a reboot?), Christmas...Again, Zombies 3, and Descendants:RoR. I was unaware of the existence of S, UW, and C...A, I got spoiled for literally everything in ZBS3 and I chose to just watch reviews of D:ROR until Part 2 came out. I've seen, in total: 60. I think it's somewhere between 58-60 that I remember. So about as many of the Barbie Movies that I've seen
PLUS, Wish Upon a Star, and Parent Trap 2. Wish Upon A Star and Parent Trap 2 are premier films, not DCOMS.
PLUS: 16 Wishes and Harriet The Spy: Blog Wars which were NOT DCOMs but under the Disney label
PLUS: HSM3, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and Hannah Montana The Movie which premiered Theatrically and thus were not DCOMs
PLUS: Phineas & Ferb: Candace Against The Universe and The Secrets Society of Second Born Royals which released in Disney+ but not as DCOMs
I WILL be watching Zombies 4 unfortunately. I have a problem.
There are a lot of movies affiliated with Disney that appeared on Disney Channel or Disney XD often but are not affiliated with Disney exactly now that I think about it 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Here’s my truthful reviews of all the Lizzie McGuire episodes I watched recently!
Tumblr media
In the first episode there’s a big food fight in the school cafeteria. Lizzie, Kate and Tudgeman get blamed! This episodes really funny, although sad too because Lizzie and Kate’s cute outfits get ruined in the food fight! I loved the nod to Breakfast club at the end! Lizzie wears lots of pink (my favourite!) and a really pretty flowery top and Kate has a really cute flowery skirt! Yay for flower print! 🌸 Also Kate offers to give Lizzie a manicure, which she declines! I would have definitely accepted a manicure from the most popular girl in school when I was her age! 💅🏻
Tumblr media
Next up was a Christmas episode where Lizzie make a Christmas float and meets a real elf! Lizzie’s outfit has a really cute blue necklace and Kate wears the prettiest pink top with ribbons and sheer sleeves! 🎀 My Christmas wish would be to be as fashionable as the characters from this show!
Today I watched 2 more episodes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the first one Lizzie’s trying to get lots of pictures in the yearbook, but Kate’s in charge and wants to put a mean photo in the yearbook! Lizzie starts the episode dressed as a mouse as initiation to join a club! It was so hilarious (and a funny idea for a consequence or bet!) I always end up laughing so much when I watch this show! Later Lizzie wears a cool suit and stiletto heeled boots, she’s so stylish! Kate wears a cute red dress and has her nails painted white, I loved her whole look!
Tumblr media
Finally I watched one where Lizzie became an advice columnist. She’s really good at it (she’s actually so clever!) but begins to doubt herself! She wears a really cute yellow top with ruffled sleeves and her makeup looks so pretty, I love the shade of pink lipstick she wears, it compliments her eyeshadow so well.💄

Album Review of the Week: Smash Mouth - Fush Yu Mang (1997)
Fush Yu Mang is Smash Mouth's debut album and it ended up going double platinum! Not bad. Their sound is inspired by punk rock, ska rock, reggae and speed metal.
We open with Flo, a fast paced ska track that sounds very mid-90s in a great way! Beer Goggles continues in the same tone, just with a bit more rock than ska and a touch more melody. I really enjoy the cadence during the chant of "I want someone anyone". They say 'anyone' in an interesting way!
Next, we have Walkin' On the Sun which is certainly the most recognizable song on this album and my favorite by far! It has such an iconic 90s sound, I absolutely love it! The instrumentals are really fun and have a unique sound to go along with the bouncy melody. This is one of those tracks that hides a depressing subject with a bouncy melody. It was inspired by the unrest in L.A. after Rodney King was brutalized by police. They thought, we may as well be walking around with the planet on fire the way things are going.
Let's Rock goes back and forth at a breakneck speed between reggae and (I think) that speed metal influence. It is quite confusing to listen to! Although it sounds as though they definitely had fun with it, can't fault them for that!
Heave-Ho is a song that any young musician can relate to, I am sure. It is detailing a "whiny" neighbor that complained about the noise they were making so the landlord raised their rent! The lyrics are pretty funny and it is a solid-sounding rock track!
The Fonz is a solid rock track as well, but compared to what we have heard so far it is actually kind of boring. Just your standard rock instrumentation with the tiniest bit of ska in there every so often.
Pet Names brings back the personality with some manic vocals! The lyrics are an interesting take on the demise of a relationship, I really appreciate their songwriting. I like it when people write outside the box. Sure, most songs are about relationships, but this is a rare one that has a unique take that leaves me amused.
Padrino has a little Latin rock influence along with the fast-paced ska. I love the chorus with the chant of "Padreeenooo". They also reference Al Pacino in the chorus, who had inspired the album name. It is a reference to his slurred delivery of "F*ck you man" in Scarface.
Nervous in the Alley starts with the kind of guitar riff that scratches my brain, I don't know enough to name the technical sound - if a pedal creates it or what - but it is my favorite way for a guitar to sound. Other than that, it is a relatively standard track given its neighbors. Fast lyrics, ska beats.
Disconnect the Dots goes super ska. At this point in the album, it is starting to become background noise for me - meaning that the excitement is dwindling and things are starting to sound the same.
Push brings me back in a little bit. This is more of a standard rock sound again, but still unique enough to appreciate their talents.
Why Can't We Be Friends is a cover of the 70s song from War. It is fun at first, but become repetitive really quickly and just keeps going after it wears out its welcome! This one is very nostalgic for me because it was featured on the Lizzie McGuire TV soundtrack.
Overall, most songs are very entertaining and highly energetic. I can definitely see young guys going gaga for this at the time!
