In a crash-marred finish that saw several top-tier riders brought down in multiple wet roundabouts inside the last 5km, Canadian national champ Alison Jackson stayed upright and in position to win a reduced sprint. Her American teammate Kristen Faulkner did an impressively long lead-out, allowing Jackson to out-sprint Blanca Vas (SD Worx-Protime) and Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ). Vas will at least have the consolation of taking the GC leader's jersey for tomorrow, thanks to bonus seconds at the finish and sprint points earlier in the stage.

One of Jackson's own teammates was one of the riders that went down, as were Anna Henderson (Visma Lease-a-Bike), Liane Lippert (Movistar), Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek), and many others. Hopefully there weren't severe injuries, and the the 5km rule should bring them back to the same finishing time.

And no one celebrates like Alison Jackson!

Paris-Roubaix — April 8 and 9; 2023.

The “Hell of the North.” The “Queen of the Classics.” Whatever you call it, Paris-Roubaix is probably our favorite race on the calendar. The final half of this 255km Monument includes about 55km of Northern France’s worst cobbled roads (spread over 29 “sectors”), so it’s packed with drama and always produces a worthy champion—even when it’s a dark horse. This year’s race returns its usual spot on the calendar (one week after the Tour of Flanders) after pushing back a week to accommodate last year’s French national election.

Saturday brings the third-ever women’s Paris-Roubaix (145km), which starts in Denain and follows the final 17 sectors of cobbles of Sunday’s men’s race—all the way to the finish line in the Roubaix velodrome. Both editions have been won solo: Great Britain’s Lizzy Deignan (Trek-Segafredo) won the inaugural event with a long-distance attack in wet, muddy conditions, and Long-Borghini won last year with a strong counter-attack in the final hour after the leading group reformed. Van Vleuten has never won this race, but is skipping the event to target the hillier Ardennes Classics two weeks later. In her place, the Dutch will have Vos to root for, and she would certainly love to add a Roubaix cobble to her palmares.

In last year’s men’s race, the Netherland’s Dylan van Baarle (INEOS-Grenadiers) won the first cobbled Monument in his team’s history after attacking the leading group about 20km from the finish line in Roubaix. And the Dutchman moved to Jumbo-Visma this past off-season, giving van Aert one of the strongest and most experienced teammates anyone could ask for.

top-tier question omg. restricting this to road cyclists because i'm still getting into track cycling lol

for the boys: marcel kittel, julian alaphilippe, jonas vingegaard, tadej pogacar, bauke mollema, richard carapaz and niki terpstra are some of my currently-competing faves; ordinarily wout van aert would also be on this list but he is currently in my doghouse for a recent interview lmao. if we're talking all-time then i'd also add jens voigt to this list ✨

for the girlies: extremely basic choice but marianne vos the goatiest goat to ever goat (other faves include lizzie deignan, pauline ferrand-prévot, and annemiek van vleuten). also i know she's amateur and not pro atm but i became a big anna kiesenhofer fan after her gold medal at the last olympics — very gutsy ride from her, plus we've got that cambridge alumna stem girlie solidarity 😌

if i had to pick one right this minute as we're just at the beginning of the spring classics season.... Liège! even the provisional lineups right now look like a very exciting race and it's often a fun day

all depends on who's riding it in paris and how everyone comes off the Tour! 'olympic champion tadej pogačar' does have a certain ring to it, but so equally do 'olympic champions joshua tarling and lizzie deignan' (but a joshy t olympics RR i feel is highly unlikely, but the TT/track events however 👀👀👀)

📆 birthday/important dates

let's keep it real i put this question in because roubaix is my birthday 🤷‍♂️ my one-year-older-day will coincide with the weekend where Lotte Kopecky and Wout van Aert win themselves some big rocks (bonus prediction there!). plus the final stage of Itzulia Basque Country so it will be good to see the outcome of the pre-Tour jonas/primož/remco battle
