O Canada!
Tumblr media
In a crash-marred finish that saw several top-tier riders brought down in multiple wet roundabouts inside the last 5km, Canadian national champ Alison Jackson stayed upright and in position to win a reduced sprint. Her American teammate Kristen Faulkner did an impressively long lead-out, allowing Jackson to out-sprint Blanca Vas (SD Worx-Protime) and Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ). Vas will at least have the consolation of taking the GC leader's jersey for tomorrow, thanks to bonus seconds at the finish and sprint points earlier in the stage.
Tumblr media
One of Jackson's own teammates was one of the riders that went down, as were Anna Henderson (Visma Lease-a-Bike), Liane Lippert (Movistar), Lizzie Deignan (Lidl-Trek), and many others. Hopefully there weren't severe injuries, and the the 5km rule should bring them back to the same finishing time.
Tumblr media
And no one celebrates like Alison Jackson!

The next adventure
We now had two days left in Barcelona before we fly to Istanbul. On Sunday morning we got up and went for a run/walk along Diagonal. It’s been a while since we’ve run and I certainly felt it later in the day.
We’ve explored a few new areas (new to us) of Barcelona on this trip. It really is a beautiful city, one you could very easily live in.
A lazy day as there really isn’t anything we want or need to do. So coffee on the way home from our run, a leisurely breakfast, some Spanish study for me (I’ve really let my Spanish go since the exam). Eventually we took ourselves out for a drink and some tapas and then headed home with a bottle of wine to watch the last stage of the Tour or Romandie and some of the Madrid Open and I did a load of washing.
Before we got the chance to head out for a drink in the evening the heavens opened (thankfully I got the washing in just in time). It was thundering and the rain was really pelting down.
Thankfully we had always planned an at home dinner. Meanwhile the Mums have landed safely in Sydney. Wanda the Walker was awol and last seen shopping up a storm in London in the duty free. She will be reunited with Mum in the next couple of days.
Monday we headed out for another run/walk, a late bid for fitness. Coffee on the way home then breakfast, showers and a bit of admin before we headed out.
Today is a public holiday so aside from cafes, restaurants and bakeries, nothing is really open. We found somewhere for lunch and then strolled home.
Late in the afternoon we both had a massage in preparation for the next few weeks. Out again for a drink and some tapas and then home and into our pjs while I did the last washing load.
While the clothes were washing we watched the replay of stage 1 of La Vuelta Feminina, a team time trial - always good to watch.
So tomorrow begins our tour specific blog for the next 6 or so weeks. Here’s the link:

La Vuelta Femenina — May 1 to 7, 2023.
Tumblr media
For the past 8 years, the organizers of the men’s Tour of Spain have run a women’s event during the men’s grand tour. Starting as a one-day race run alongside the last stage of the men’s grand tour, the event grew to include four days of racing, but that’s hardly a grand tour, isn’t it?
Enter the new and improved La Vuelta Feminina which in addition to being expanded to seven stages has moved to its own spot on the calendar–away from the men’s event that often overshadowed it. The course is yet to be unveiled, but we know the race will begin on the Costa Blanca, which means beautiful scenery and close proximity to lots of hard climbs.
Van Vleuten has already said she’s racing–she won the last two editions–and looks to make this the first victory of what she hopes will be a hatrick of women’s grand tour wins in 2023.

Federação espanhola proíbe freios a disco em competições nacionais
Tumblr media

5 Takeaways from La Vuelta Feminina
Competition is good.
There were no boring stages. Every stage of La Vuelta Feminina was competitive this year, and most were quite close. Even the sprint stages ended up having major GC action with the cross-winds. If you look at the results, it seems to favor the super teams like SD Worx-Protime and Visma Lease-a-Bike, and they certainly did have good results. But every stage was hotly contested, there were no dominant solo breakaways, and teams like FDJ-Suez or EF Education-Cannondale played their cards well to upset the favorites for some stage races. Frankly, the Vuelta Feminina was a lot more fun to watch than the men's Giro d'Italia is looking to be. (There, we said it!)
2. La Vuelta Feminina's spot on the calendar is fantastic.
Tumblr media
We think the organizers of the Vuelta Feminina have absolutely nailed the spot on the calendar. That lull at the end of the spring classics was just begging for a stage race, and Spain's beautiful countryside and cities look best in spring. That's always been the down side of La Vuelta versus Le Tour in the men's calendar, the scenery is so much greener and prettier during the Tour in July than the Vuelta in August. A spring Vuelta solves that problem and avoids overlap with the Tour de France Femme or the Giro Donne, bringing top talent to the race.
3. Weird dynamics at SD Worx-Protime continue.
Honestly, we don't know what is going on in this team. Demi Vollering's performance was great, she deserved both stage wins and the general classification. But her best mountain domestique was arguably Grace Brown of FDJ-Suez and not any of her own teammates. There were times when Marlen Reusser or Mischa Bredewold seemed to attack Vollering, or when Vollering was leading out the group with her own teammates behind. It didn't escape our notice that Vollering wasn't on the podium when SD Worx accepted the best team award. No one outside the team can tell, but Abby Mickey of the Escape Collective probably said it best when she said "the SD Worx-Protime team bus can’t be a fun place to hang out at the moment."
Tumblr media
4. Crashes continue to be a real danger.
It's been a horrible year for crashes in both the men's and women's peloton, and the Vuelta Feminina saw its share of them, even in the winning team on the first TTT stage! It's a shame we didn't get to see a rematch of Gaia Realini versus Demi Vollering due to Realini's crash and withdrawal, although Evita Muzic took us somewhat by surprise and rose to the challenge instead. Likewise, the withdrawal of very strong riders like Ellen van Dijk (Lidl-Trek), Anna Henderson (Visma Lease-a-Bike), Emma Norsgaard (Movistar), Marta Cavalli (FDJ-Suez), Clara Emond (EF Education-Cannondale), and several others due to injuries from crashes was a real shame.
5. Several riders and teams are stepping up.
It wouldn't be fair to say that Evita Muzic has been flying below anyone's radar, but until last week, we didn't know how good her form has become. If she hadn't been caught in the second group during the crosswind echelons of Stage 4, she would have had a real shot at the podium, but she can be happy with her stellar victory on Stage 6. Similarly, Riejanne Markus was remarkably consistent in the mountains and her second-place finish is a real mark to watch her in future GC competitions. Both FDJ-Suez and EF Education-Cannondale were very strategic, using their riders effectively, and nabbed some great stage wins as a result. Ricarda Bauernfeind's (Canyon-SRAM) sixth-place finish was impressive, if only because she lost two minutes in the Stage 4 crosswind split, and was presumably riding for teammate Kasia Niewiadoma until Niewiadoma had to withdraw due to illness.
Tumblr media
And we have to tip our hats to Karlijn Swinkels of UAE Team ADQ, who fought mightily to keep the mountains classification jersey after winning it in Stage 2, which enlivened several of the breakaways throughout this year's Vuelta Feminina. We would prefer to see the polka-dot jersey points to be calculated so as to not favor the GC winner, and the last-minute rule change before Stage 8 probably doomed Swinkels' campaign to win the Queen of the Mountains, but Swinkels fought hard regardless, and for that we salute her.

Marianne Vos makes it look easy as she avoided some late crashes and stayed out of the wind until opening her sprint and winning Stage 3 of La Vuelta Feminina 2024 by two bike lengths. Obviously her team worked hard for her (despite Anna Henderson not starting after yesterday's crash) but Vos' placement in the bunch was impeccable. The GOAT, indeed.
Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) took second after eating a lot of wind in the run-in, and Olivia Baril (Movistar) took third. It was nice to see Movistar able to contest the sprint, despite Emma Norsgaard having to abandon earlier in the day from injuries suffered in yesterday's stage.
Blanca Vas hangs on to her red jersey by just one second.

Kristen Faulkner knows how to ride through the line!
Major GC action in the crosswinds today at La Vuelta Feminina. After SD Worx-Protime shredded the peloton into echelons, Kristen Faulkner attacked the select leading group on an uphill section with 6km to go, and soloed away to the finish. Faulkner reached speeds of 67kph, and though the chasers made up some of the ground, she stayed away for the win.
Tumblr media
Faulkner saved her celebration until after crossing the line, because the GC came down to mere seconds. Faulkner is now in third on GC, after Marianne Vos out-sprinted Blanka Vas to take the red jersey off her shoulders with the bonus seconds.
Here's the obligatory celebration photo with Alison Jackson, who was just as enthusiastic as when Faulkner led her out to win Stage 2. It's been a very good spring for the new EF Education-Cannondale team!
Tumblr media
Tomorrow we get our first proper mountain stage, which is looking pretty good for the likes of Demi Vollering (SD Worx-Protime) or Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), who made the first group in the crosswinds, along with Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) and Juliette Labous (FDJ-Suez). Not so fortunate were GC contenders like Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek), Liane Lippert (Movistar), and Mavi García (Liv-AlUla-Jayco), who were caught in the second group and lost over two minutes.

Team Movistar have confirmed that Liane Lippert will begin her season at La Vuelta Feminina!
Lippert missed the spring season as she recovered from a foot injury, and will be leading her team after the retirement of Annemiek van Vleuten.

With the Spring Classics behind us, the Women's World Tour turns its attention on stage racing, with La Vuelta Feminina just days away. It's going to look a little different this year without last year's winner and dominant force in the peloton Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar), who retired at the end of last season.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, some very familiar faces will still be there hunting stages. Marianne Vos (Visma Lease-a-Bike) took two stages in 2023 and may want a few more.
Tumblr media
And several teams have seen the classics as having shown the way to beat super-teams like SD Worx-Protime, and will want to try their hand at the general classification, although Demi Vollering is still probably the one to beat and the odds-on favorite. (Absolutely no commentary here about nature breaks.)
Tumblr media
Last year's Vuelta was a big announcement for the young climber from Lidl-Trek, Gaia Realini, who out-sprinted AvV for a stage win and out-climbed everyone but Vollering on the Covadonga climb on Stage 7.
Tumblr media
And we've already seen some great younger talent this season, so hopefully some new names will be standing atop the podiums across the eight stages.
La Vuelta Feminia begins with a team time trial on April 28.

Évita Muzic out-sprints Demi Vollering to win Stage 6 of La Vuelta Feminina!
Tumblr media
Muzic's teammate Grace Brown (FDJ-Suez) paced the lower slopes of La Laguna Negra climb, and after a brief pull by Marlen Reusser (SD Worx-Protime), Vollering took over on the front for the last kilometers, with Muzic in her wheel. When Vollering put in her trademark acceleration in the last kilometer, only Muzic could go with her, leaving top contenders like Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek) and Yara Kastelijn (Fenix-Deceuninck) behind. Muzic then sprinted around Vollering in the last 100m, and although Vollering responded, Muzic stayed ahead for the win.
Tumblr media
It's nice to see Muzic stepping up, particularly since teammate Cecilie Uttrup-Ludwig has been largely absent this season. It also doesn't escape our notice that Vollering is rumored to be joining FDJ-Suez next season after leaving SD Worx-Protime. Muzic would make a very dangerous co-leader or mountain domestique for Vollering in the stage races!
Vollering extends her overall lead to second-place ELB to almost a minute, with Riejanne Markus (Visma Lease-a-Bike) about 20 seconds behind ELB. Markus has had a good race so far, and a podium place would be a really nice addition to the green sprint jersey that Marianne Vos has all but locked up.
