The original Elphaba to those who know, Stephanie J. Block (1972) won her Tony for The Cher Show (2018) where she was, of course, Cher. No stranger to playing icons of the highest order, she made her Broadway debut in 2003, originating the role of Liza Minnelli in The Boy from Oz. In addition to eight Broadway credits, she has an extensive resume of regional, touring, and concert performances across the country, and will make her West End debut in Kiss Me, Kate this summer. She starred in the 2022 Into the Woods revival opposite her real-life husband, Sebastian Arcelus. They met starring in Wicked together on tour.

The leading lesbian of Broadway, Cherry Jones (1956) is a two-time Tony winner for The Heiress (1995) and Doubt: A Parable (2005). She has fifteen Broadway credits to her good name, including everyone's favorite gay fantasia Angels in America, and a slew of credits beyond. She was a founding member of the American Repertory Theatre, has two Emmys, and has been married to Sophie Huber since 2015. The televised kiss she shared with then-girlfriend Sarah Paulson after winning her second Tony stirred up a good deal of controversy back then, but is iconic now.

Artist Profile: How Susan Lucci Became America’s Sweetheart

Actress Susan Lucci was born on December 23, 1946, in Scarsdale, New York. The daughter of Victor and Jean Lucci. Susan grew up in Garden City, New York, Susan Lucci was a fan of television soap operas from a young age, and, for as long as she can remember, she wanted to be a performer. Lucci took singing lessons, trained as a dancer and honed her craft in community theater and high school musicals, including lead roles in Oklahoma and The King and I. After graduating high school, Lucci enrolled at Marymount College in Tarrytown, New York, which had a respected theater program. She graduated with a BFA in theater arts and immediately moved to New York City to make her mark on the acting world.

Susan Lucci’s initial acting work mostly included understudy roles in off-Broadway theater productions, bit parts on soap operas, and extra work in films. That is until 1969, when the 23-year-old Lucci auditioned for a role on an up-and-coming soap opera called All My Children. She beat out hundreds of young actresses for the part of Erica Kane, a character which TV Guide has called “unequivocally the most famous soap opera character in the history of daytime TV,” and her career took off from there.

It’s difficult to write about Susan Lucci without also writing about Erica Kane, the character she embodied over four decades on All My Children. Despite the notable differences between Susan, the kind and approachable actress eternally appreciative of everything she’s achieved in her career, and Erica, the villainous social climber that audiences loves to hate, Erica Kane is the role that introduced Susan Lucci to the world, and made her the first soap opera star to land on the cover of major magazines and star in high-profile TV movies. In 2011, after 41 years of playing the role of Erica Kane, Susan Lucci bid farewell to her legendary character when it was announced that All My Children had been cancelled.

During her years on All My Children, Susan Lucci became famous not only for her string of Daytime Emmy Award nominations - she earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series every year between 1981-93 and from 1995-98 - but also for her unbroken streak of Emmy losses - zero wins out of 18 nominations. In 1999, Susan Lucci’s Emmy curse was finally broken. After receiving her 19th Emmy nomination, she won, receiving a four-minute standing ovation from the crowd.

Lucci now lives in Garden City, New York, with her husband and manager, Helmut Huber. The couple met in 1969, just as her star was rising, and were married soon after. They have now been married for nearly 50 years, an enduring and incredible love story that stands in stark contrast to her most famous character’s 10 failed marriages. The couple have raised two children together, Liza, an actress who debuted on the soap opera Passions in 1999, and Andreas.

In the real world, Susan Lucci makes a point to shed the selfishness of Erica Kane and devote herself to worthy charitable causes. She is active in her support of Little Flowers Children & Family Services of New York, a child-care agency providing foster care and adoption, and was chosen as a celebrity spokesperson for the March of Dimes' National Ambassador Campaign. But no cause is as close to Susan Lucci’s heart as the fight against cerebral palsy. Lucci became active with United Cerebral Palsy after her grandson, Brendan, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2010.
