and i think part of that can be chalked up to the nature of fanfic itself - people who write fic like to Project their own selves and issues into it, that’s part of the media and tbh something i love about fic sometimes, but people who write fic (especially romance) are by & large women/female-presenting/afab, so when they project VERY HARD sometimes someone winds up becoming more feminine

but i ALSO think it has a lot to do with homophobia (So Which One Of You Wears The Pants? Surely You Must Seek To Emulate The Heterosexual Lifestyle) and the fetishization of m/m relationships...like imagine...a relationship where both dudes are the same amount of masculine that they are in canon...

or, alternatively, if you wanted a relationship with one masculine person and one feminine person, you may perhaps try: an m/f ship, but nobody wants to do THAT because of misogyny (no girls allowed, only girly men) and also the arguably false belief that if your thing contains a same-sex relationship it’s more woke than if it’s a het relationship

to clarify there is absolutely nothing bad about being a girly dude or liking girly dudes FUCK society’s gender norms but when they're a constant (and fetishized) replacement for ladies because you just hate women that much (especially when you ARE a woman) that’s when it’s like Oh Okay Yikes
