Dunsany Castle

Dunsany Castle is located in Meath County in Dunsany, Ireland. The Norman Castle was commissioned by Hugh de Lacy, who also commissioned Killeen and Trim Castles. The castle is surrounded by a demesne, which contains a 15th century consecrated church, a 3-acre walled garden, a farm complex, an icehouse, and more. The demesne is encircled by a dry-stone wall, which was constructed to serve as relief work during the Great Famine. The castle is believed to have been constructed around 1180-1200 with motte fortifications. The lower sections of the four towers, an old kitchen, and a few interior spaces are thought to be part of the original structure. The castle was updated during the 18th and 19th centuries, making the current castle three times the size it was originally. The castle boasts vaulted ceilings, an arts and crafts billiards room, ancient and modern kitchens, a Gothic Revival style library with a beehive ceiling, ornately decorated bedrooms on the third floor, and a priests hiding hole on a secondary stairway. The castle is the ancestral home of the Lords of Dunsany, heads of the Plunkett family, since the 1400’s. The Plunkett Family still lives at the estate, where they house an extensive collection of paintings, ceramics, and furniture.
