HUNTING RIG THROWBACK: Growing up in Northern Nevada there is no lack of rough roads between hunting spots. Through the season you encounter everything from steep rocky climbs, to snow, mud, wash outs, long gravel roads, and some long pavement drives as well. My dad always took pride in his hunting rigs, all having a name of course, there was Rambo (the camo truck) which became my first vehicle, The Scorpion (Land Cruiser), and the Beast (F-250). A lot went into these vehicles. He worked on them all year and a lot of thought went into how to make them better. No topic was discussed more than the perfect tire. They are a big investment and finding the right one was always the challenge. You balance side wall and tire ply, climbing capability, traction, mud and snow handling, durability in rock, as well as pavement noise and handling. This week I will be testing a new tire the #BFGKM3 that is designed for just this type of terrain! The perfect western hunting tire. The @bfgoodrichtires KM3 will be put to the test in practically my backyard, through the Sierras and along the toughest sections of the Rubicon trail. #BFGonRubicon *As a side note the buck and camo truck picture was my first deer. My dad and I shot the two bucks at the same time the night before, the next morning was school picture day...haha #livewildhunthard

Tomorrow is one of the most anticipated days of the year for me... my home state of Nevada releases the draw results. I can remember reading my draw results and the excitement that came with it over the years as vividly as some of the hunts. It is where a lot of great adventures have begun over the last 21 years of applying here. There have been some long awaited tags and some that I was surprised to draw...as well as a few years with absolutely nothing. So I will be refreshing my browser all day tomorrow with high hopes and anticipation. It's no suprise that hunters are the ones that put so much into conservation. Many of the animals we chase take major time investments, from packing into the backcountry for the hunt, to pre-season scouting, to shed hunting. It is year round. I am more invested in seeing elk flourish than just killing an elk. More of a hunter's time is spent outside the shooting of the animal. It is not only the food we eat, but the thoughts and time we occupy ourselves with throughout the year. Without elk, I cease to be an elk hunter. FIRE LIGHT: both the fires crackle and roar around me. One on each side of the elk to provide light while I work, as well as add some comforting warmth. Inventory of flashlights between the three of us was dismal at best... the count revealed two in total, both were failing, and just cell phone lights remaining for the long journey out. We need to conserve batteries...bad! I snapped this picture with my phone then turned it off as a back up light. "Well, I will have to work by fire light in order to quarter and skin the bull." I said. This was going to take some extra time, as well as man power to keep the fires burning bright. "Gather up pine sap" I said to Jamison. "Pack it in the root end of a small dead pine and light it up as a torch." The sap torch helped cut the shadows allowing me to see my cuts as we flicked off our flashlights to save batteries. The warm glow of the torch, the surrounding snow, the crisp air, and the blade of my sharp knife gleaning in the fire light. This is elk hunting.
