My calf scramble post got more interactions than I thought It would, but It just reminded me of him.
Now I am a fourth generational farmer, I've seen dozens of steers come and go. But Rugz, he was different. I fought tooth and nail for him, and took him from feral and afraid to the sweetest bundle of beef.
I sold him August 2023, and to this day I still think about it. I remember breaking down in the sale ring and crying Infront of dozens of people. I remember being handed the empty halter as he was trailered. I remember when I composed myself and walked back in, but broke down because the barn was empty.
I'm a strong guy, I pride myself in it. But there's still some grief knawing inside of me. I'm mad about it, I've always said and say it's the industry. It's what you do. I can't comprehend why I am upset over him still, I find it embarrassing to talk about. I personally raised another steer again this year and I was sad over him but nothing like this.
But there was something about Rugz, that stupid blonde calf. The only calf I had that ever made me consider backing away from my passions and dreams. If I would've kept him I would have been set back so many years, but if you ask me now. I would be fine waiting if it meant he was there.
I love farming, I am a hog farmer and cattle farmer and years from now I'll grow my operations. I'll have hundreds of livestock pass through my hands, and I'll still think of him.
The steer that built me.

Thinking about Dark Crystal a lot again. But only the deepest, most profound thoughts, I can assure you.
Like how there must be so many packs of feral Fizzgigs out in the woods, after the vast majority of Gelfling were drunk or went away.
Luckily for Jen, they were all slightly off-screen thanks to Kira’s Fizzgig screaming all the time and startling them away.
#dark crystal#the dark crystal#source: trust me bro#jokes aside#I’m thinking about what was left behind when the Gelfling vanished#not just the ruins#they were farmers and herders#fields going to weed#livestock and pets going feral#Podlings going unwashed#although they may not mind so much#also Kira really named her dog Dog huh

there’s well worn mountain lion paths going to our birds complete with scat and feathers and im just like. fuck man I love my turkeys more than anything and I don’t want to give up on having them but the money it takes to fucking MOUNTAIN LION PROOF shit… we know they climb the coop. idk how long it will take before the learn how to get the door open at this rate. idk if I don’t get this livestock conservancy grant to improve the coop idk what the fuck im gonna do. coyotes, raccoons, opossums, they’re all manageable. but fucking returning mountain lions, probably breeding nearby…. does anyone wanna give me 20k to install 6 foot fucking fences
#mayb farmers wouldn’t shoot apex predators if we gave them resources to predator proof efficiently#livestock guardian dog grant and training programs have reduced predator killing in other countries substantially#but ummmmm this is the usa where we give a fuck about nothing at all

as someone who personally doesn't have any problem with the idea that there are animal companions and animals that are game/livestock, it startles me how completely devoid of compassion people can be in the comments of any given post by a farmer or rancher who tries to care for a sick/deformed animal on their property. do they not know how human nature works?
i believe that the stray cat population is an environmental nightmare that should be aggressively culled, but if i find an injured kitten crying in the storm drain, i try and care for it. if a duck or cow or sheep abandons one of their young, it's not really that crazy that the owner might try and help the baby live, even if it's a long shot. "the mother rejected it for a reason, let nature take its course" is the kind of shit someone who hasn't actually worked with animals in any capacity would say.
#people who have never gutted a fish or processed a deer have a lot to say about what farmers should do with sick infant livestock#and it is weird as fuck#you think a cattle rancher doesnt know a calf with 3 legs and one ear probably isn't gonna make it#do you think your comment is really needed#idk its just weird as fuck#people have been caring for their animals even when it doesn't make sense for thousands of years#if i had land i would never post about my livestock personally

there was a buffalo that was about to die soon but we were not allowed to tell it to the owner
#and the owner was a farmer whose livelihood depends on the animal#he was so sweet#when you meet with people from village who've travelled long enough for their animals just to get treated#you can see the hope in their wet eyes#this buffalo alone must've cost 1.5 lakh#and the economic gain from is milk is far beyond to sustain livelihood of farmers and their families#but they don't accept that their everything won't survive anymore#and we saw those poor animals#bitch with a tumor she kept whimpering#and a chihuahua who was so weak and helpless we couldn't even collect enough blood for cbc#ive been to clinic few times before this but none of the cases were this bad#also there was this rich lady with her toy breed dog who barely didn't eat for like two days and she got done all the scans and tests done#in moments like this it truly hits the condition of farmers in our country#fucking pathetic#i know its so much easier to open a clinic in metro city for dogs and cats where pets from rich families would come and youncan just do your#little oohs and awws#and no one wants to touch a cow or buffalo or goat because they don't fit in your cute aesthetic animals of what makes you a vet#but i keep thinking about the eyes of those owners as well as their livestock

Barn Cats
Meet Fee, our residential farm lady-
This post is going to go over the importance of barn cats to our farm. Though before I do all that let's get some facts about my barns kitties.
-All my barns cats have free access to outside, the barn, and the house whenever they like. Though they have their own cat room in the barn and prefer that area.
-All barn cats are flea treated, wormed, and spayed/neutered.
-None of my barn cats are feral.
--------------------
The Importance Of Barn Cats
When you hear of barn cats, a lot of people think of pets that aren't cared for so they're thrown outside. That is infact wrong! These cats are important to the health and safety of our animals, especially our poultry.
At my land personally we tend to deal with mice issues, horribly. Mice are cute but they carry diseases that can harm our animals. They're very good at chewing into feed bags and contaminating feed, causing money loss and unusable feed.
Mice are sneaky, unfortunately sometimes we don't notice they got into the feed until it's too late. An example of this is they got into the chick feed and their feces caused the death of multiple young chickens. They also like to eat out expensive hog feed, bit the pigs usually eat them back 🤦♂️
And to fight back to this issue, we have Barn Cats. These cats are machines, they can successfully kill dozens of mice and prevent them from ruining feed. Ever since getting barn cats there has been a major improvement in the amount of rodents in our barns!
Other animals the cats have successfully delt with are snakes and opossums! We don't have venomous snakes but we do have egg stealers and chick eaters. These cats have successfully made it so we haven't lost anything to a snake in two years!
Now our cats don't get rid of opposums by death. Rather they just deter them from entering the property. Opposums are lovely little creatures but they do attack poultry, and their feces (if consumed by horses) can cause the horse to have a neurological issue and die.
These cats are also incredibly smart! They will kill a mouse or a bird in the feed, but completely ignore a hen and her freshly born chicks! They're able to make a respectful relationship with our livestock! Without them we'd be flushed with rodents and snakes!

cause like genuinely i struggle with the idea of monsters at all in worldbuilding. WHY do bokoblins and moblins and lizalfos and lynels attack anyone in range. territorial i guess? but also they're advanced enough to make and use tools (weapons, mining tools, baskets) and they have no problem with each other so what sort of agreements have been made there? surely some sort of trade or negotiations could be established with them if that's what keeps moblins and lizalfos from attacking each other? why are lynels so advanced in tool making, archery, and fighting? like i DONT believe that the part of their brain that recognizes and categorizes threats just remained as undeveloped as a blind buffalo's. they have to have their own sort of societal structures (AND ACTUALLY THEY DO WITH BOSS BOKOBLINS KIND OF!!)
i just think. that aggressive towards anything Not Monster (hard to define anyways) is not sustainable. and i think there has to be some sort of negotiations that happened. and i think their aggressiveness is fine During the adventure cause they're under ganon's control but
#LOOK ME AND KILTON WOULD BE BEST BUDS I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE#i'll ponder this more but. for REAL.#like. do hylruleans view them as a sort of Wilderness To Be Conquered#they can't just let them have their own territory yk?#do you think farmers and ranchers hate bokoblins and want them all dead because they steal and trample crops or kill livestock sometimes#can you TELL that my wilderness course has had a great effect on my thinking#ALSO WHY DO WOLVES ATTACK YOU IN THIS GAME. SERIOUSLY.

On page four of Woody Lane's Capturing Sunlight, and I already love it.
On the next page, we get this passage:
"Fiber is actually a complex matrix of large molecules like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Let's ignore lignin because it is not digestible unless someone attacks it with strong acids or dynamite.'
Gonna enjoy this.

Poor Shelli, who I actually gave a plot in my head, is feeling pretty depressed about being bitten. Don't worry! There's a small possibility you can survive, if we can just.. find more food and focus on healing! You're doing great!
(I mean, it's pretty accurate for the story I gave her, because she's a girl who grew up on a farm, and grew tired of the "boring" rural life her family expected her to love, and ran away with her boyfriend, planning to start over in Louisville, when the Knox Virus... happened. Her boyfriend was not immune to the aerial variant and she was, so she's now a young girl trapped alone in the apocalypse, trying to survive, not knowing if her parents are alive or undead.)
#project zomboid#nonsims#i gave her that story because i used a “visitor to knox county” start#the outfit i gave her was very 90s-teen-core#her profession is livestock farmer#i have a mod that makes my character spawn with a perfect condition car so she had the car she was traveling in#and a nearby male zombie had the key to HER car in his inventory#so it all came together neatly
