Ain't I Fallen In Love .ᐟ
Tumblr media
❤︎ | he doesn't realize it yet, but he's kind of clingy ╰ feat. miyuki kazuya (dna)
tags - clingy miyuki, hint of pro player!miyuki, fluff and more fluff, i love him, it's his birthday tomorrow yay
a/n - based on the song Sweet Dreams, TN by the Last Shadow Puppets (pls listen to it!)
MEGA MASTERLIST
Tumblr media
Kazuya thinks he isn't the clingy type of boyfriend. There was just no way.
Yet, it seems as if he's addicted to your presence. His words may betray him, but his actions certainly don't.
You see it in the way he aimlessly follows you around your shared space, talking your ear off as you busy yourself with chores. He doesn't even realize how talkative he becomes around you—that's when he's the happiest.
He goes on and on about some random thing he stumbled upon recently, until he realizes he had been talking for a solid 10 minutes or so. He stops, shrinks, and backtracks most of the time. You know the face he makes when it dawns on him that he had been yapping nonstop. It makes you laugh—it makes you smile really wide. Kazuya gets flustered when you have to reassure him that it's alright. But he insists that he isn't clingy.
I just sort of always feel sick without you baby I ain't got anything to lick without you, baby Nothing seems to stick without you, baby
At least, he isn't the guy who can't hang out with his friends anymore once he got a girlfriend. Kazuya meets up with his buddies every once in a while to catch up about life.
They talk about all sorts of things, from the mundane all the way to the extraordinaire. But somehow—somehow Kazuya manages to weave you in every thought he spews.
You'd think it's impossible, but it's true.
"Oh yeah. She was just talking about that the other day."
"I'm sure she'd love to hear about this."
His friends find it funny, how whipped this man was—how you got a man like him wrapped around your tiny little finger. They didn't have to meet you to like you; they just knew right away that you were something else to be able to turn Kazuya into this.
Cue the relentless teasing—Kazuya will lean back with a huff. Again, insisting that wasn't the case. Nevertheless, everyone saw that sparkle in his eyes whenever he'd get to bring you up. But he continues to insist that he isn't clingy—his friends were just jealous.
And all my pals will tell me is that I'm crazy You bet I'm loopy alright And I just don't recognize this fool That you have made me
His feet always lead him to where you were. He could be watching a good game of baseball on the living room TV. But, as soon as he realizes you were in the bedroom, he'll promptly shut it off and opt to watch the game on his phone instead. It hardly mattered to him that he'd have to squint and maybe lower the volume for you.
He sees you wrapped under the covers, silently reading that book you were telling him about the other day. Slowly, he'll approach, phone in hand. Kazuya would slide under the covers, shoving his arm beneath you and pulling you close. For a few minutes, he tries to remain engrossed in the unfolding match. It was he 9th inning; it was getting interesting.
But the arm that held his phone wanted nothing else but to drape over you—finally engulfing you in an embrace. So, he turns his phone off too, chucking he device somewhere off to the side of the bed.
When he pulled you in, he felt content in every way. He could always check the score of the match later. But to touch you like this feels like the first time every time. But, still, he insists that he isn't clingy.
And as you're shrinking figure blows a kiss I catch and smash it on my lips Darling, I can't seem to quit Completely falling to bits
They do say that the heart grows fonder with absence. He thinks he's at his wit's end without you—his anchor—by his side.
He sits alone, off to the side away from his teammates who were busy soaking up the adrenaline from their recent away game. Kazuya becomes restless almost immediately, just 5 minutes after sending the text, telling you that they had won. Rather than thinking about the victory, he wonders what kind of face you'd make upon reading the text or how you'd greet him once he comes home.
He glances down at his wrist where a hair tie of yours had found its way there. When did he start wearing that? Ah. It was his lucky charm all long. It made him smile, only inwardly though.
Closing his eyes, he thinks about you and in a moment of self-awareness... he reevaluates things.
Maybe he is a bit clingy.
Love like an ache in the jaw You're the first day of spring with a septum piercing Little Miss Sweet Dreams

🎡 DAIYA NO ACE & READER:  AMUSEMENT PARK EDITION !
Tumblr media
you're going to your local carnival together - so what sort of activities will your date be filled with?
Tumblr media
‎‎
Tumblr media
R O L L E R C O A S T E R S
these adventurous boys are all about thrill and excitement (even if it may not show outwardly for some of them at first!), and you can't help but get caught up in it. whether you're screaming your lungs out or perfectly calm on a roller coaster, he'll be holding your hand the entire time. when they show your pictures at the end, he'll get a copy and keep it as his wallpaper before he finds another fun ride for you to take on together.
➤ umemiya seiichi, kuramochi yoichi, isashiki jun, shirasu kenjiro
Tumblr media
C A R N I V A L G A M E S
guess who'll be that one person carrying around a pile of giant stuffed animals all over the park? that's right - you (of course, he'll offer to carry them all once he's done winning all the games). he's determined to show off in front of you despite the fact that the games are rigged, and whether or not he's a pitcher, you bet he'll want to try knocking down those milk bottles. he'll spoil you with all the cotton candy and treats you want as you take in the bright lights and excitement of the crowd with him by your side.
➤ narumiya mei, furuya satoru, yuki tetsuya, maki yosuke
Tumblr media
F E R R I S W H E E L
what's better than a scenic view with your date? a view high up in the air, of course - this classic romantic ride won't get your heart racing from adrenaline, but from the intimacy of being so close with your carnival date. he'll hold your hand and point things out with the other - the setting sun and stars twinkling into view; the neon lights of the stalls below; the way the fireflies flicker in the shadows of trees. he watches you as you stare in awe at the sights, leaning forward slightly and mouth agape. and cliché as it is, he can't see anything out there more beautiful than you.
➤ shirakawa katsuyuki, kominato haruichi, kawakami norifumi, takigawa chris yu, matsubara nao

B O U N C Y C A S T L E
your date knows how to have fun and live life to the fullest. a bouncy castle is the perfect excuse to tease you - when you fall, he'll keep jumping higher as your lungs fill with laughter and he eventually helps you up, promising to hold you and not let you fall again. any inflatable ride? you're on that - zipping down the giant slide holding hands, racing each other on the obstacle course - touchy as a pair of young lovers who can't keep their hands off each other. you'll cool off with some colourful slushies or soda floats, and he'll get you the cutest little balloon animal to top off such a perfect day.
➤ todoroki raichi, hideaki tojo, nagao akira, sawamura eijun, kanemaru shinji
Tumblr media
W A T E R R I D E S
your date is a bit more unpredictable - what's next? the splashing log ride? the tunnel of love? a paddleboat or lazy river? there's something about being by the water with you that he can't resist. first, something cooperative - you'll be paddling together, maybe some friendly bickering depending on the guy, but you're sure to have a lot of laughs along the way. next, something to get your adrenaline up - the log flume where you both get soaked and sit a bit in the sun to dry off. and last, an easygoing boat ride, where he looks deeply into your eyes and tells you what an amazing time he's had with you.
➤ kamiya carlos toshiki, amahisa kosei, miyuki kazuya, okumura koshu, masamune hongo

get ready for a bit of friendly competition with this one - he'll be the one that rams into you every chance he gets, but absolutely terrorize anyone else who thinks they can bump into you. you'll have fun spinning around and trying to catch him by surprise, but he's always looking for you among the loud screams and chaotic cars. when the ride powers down, he's there right away, helping you out and catching you when you trip and lean a little too far into his chest. while waiting in line, he'll make playful bets like who most people are gonna target that round, and he might even sneak in a quick kiss on your cheek before you get in the car...

hi friends, hope you enjoyed this one! let me know what you'd be doing and with which character! once again, let me know if i missed anyone that you wanna see... though i added a few more. this is a bit of a short one, but just tryna warm up my writing again!

So, naturally, you don’t expect him to come back.
Not at all.
And that’s okay! He did way more than he needed to.
But you find those expectations smashed to pieces the next day.
And the day after that.
And the day after that.
And the day after that.
Each of those times, he says he is simply ‘checking in.’
Guilt and obligation are his main motivators, you’re certain of it. But you don’t say anything. You like talking to him. You’ve made certain everyone knows they don’t need to hang around while you’re at the hospital and you don’t regret it, knowing they all have other things to do, but you also don’t mind talking to someone. You never do. You love your fellow humans very much and you are always willing to chat with the people around you, provided they are willing, too.
Sure, he may be coming here out of a sense of duty but he is still engaging with you. You appreciate that.
Alongside that, you are slowly but surely recovering. The worst symptoms of your concussion subside, like your spatial misperception and the blurriness in your vision when you try to focus. On your fourth day, you venture outside. You have to wear sunglasses initially but bit by bit, it becomes bearable. You’ll still experience sensitivity for the next several weeks, headaches, too, but it won’t last forever.
Hopefully.
Your good old friend, brain contusion, is getting better, too. Not completely healed yet but not getting worse. They think it’ll be healed by your follow-up appointment. Your bruise still looks bad. It will for the next week, probably, then it’ll start to heal.
Miyuki keeps coming around, even on Saturday, after the parade celebrating the Padres’ win, where they have a massive turnout on Seventh Avenue; something like a million people came out for it.
Your discharge creeps on you. Soon, it’s Tuesday, the first of November, the day before you’re to be released.
You’re in a chair by your window, the blinds pulled all the way up, giving you a view of the greenery around the hospital; immaculately cut grass, neatly trimmed bushes, rows of planted trees. The table in front of you has a half-completed puzzle, a vintage map of New York City. You’ve done this one before but it’s been a while. You don’t mind, anyhow. They often help to pass the time on slow nights during the show.
You don’t lift your head when someone knocks on your door.
“Come in!”
The door opens. Miyuki shuffles inside, dressed in his usual nondescript manner (joggers, a t-shirt, and a ballcap tucked over windswept hair). That’s the nice thing about living in San Diego. Even if November is today, you can often get away with a shirt and shorts most of the year. A shirt and leggings if you want to bundle up a little more.
Except this time, it is not just himself but…
“Is that for me?”
He smirks, shutting the door with his shoulder as his hands are preoccupied with a to-go bag from In-N-Out that you can smell all the way from here, and a cup of something in his other hand, sounding full by the way it sloshes around.
“No, I just came here with your favorite fast food to eat it in front of you.”
You let out a loud laugh. “Wait until the press hears about this!”
“Don’t make me sue you for defamation.”
You keep grinning as he hands you the bag and drink, then pulls the other chair over to where you are.
“What’s the occasion, then?” you ask, sipping your drink tentatively and then immediately finding yourself pleased to taste Coke.
“Discharge is tomorrow,” he says simply.
You open the bag. Your light-well fries sit next to your decently-sized wrapped burger, which is…
“A Double-Double with no onions and no pickles, right?”
You beam. “You remembered!”
“Hard to forget someone who starts a conversation accusing me of forgetting to bring them In-N-Out.”
“But, like, in a good way, right?”
He rolls his eyes. He’s doing that more often. You’re pleased. It shows he’s getting comfortable.
You aren’t under any pretenses about what’s going on here. You two will likely go your separate ways after tomorrow, but you’ve still greatly enjoyed your time together and you want to strive toward making him comfortable around you. Even if your time will soon be cut short.
You hum, superbly pleased, and unwrap the burger. “So, you tried my trick today, then? How was it?”
“Better but they’re still not the greatest fries ever.”
“Fair enough! Anyway, you didn’t have to get me something, too. We’re having lunch tomorrow, aren’t we?” Then you’d go down to BestBuy and get you a new camera.
He waves you off. “I was already there for lunch. I figured I might as well. Besides, tomorrow might turn into a much more public affair if people recognize me.”
“True, true…”
They’d release the statement about your discharge, your current status, and your meeting with Miyuki after the fact. But the chances of him being recognized when the two of you got lunch — his treat — were very, very high. That might strain some things.
While you happily tuck into your meal, he leans forward, peering at the table.
“Puzzles again.”
“Of course.”
“You and your puzzles.”
“They help pass the time!”
“Hmm.” Despite the mock doubtful tone, he slots in a few more pieces while you eat.
Halfway through, Hector makes an appearance. He isn’t your doctor — he is an ER doctor, so that is where he is most of the time; your case was handed over to someone else but he’s been hovering over Dr. Maxwell’s shoulder and micromanaging everything.
“Hey, Tee, I’m heading out —” he stops, head poked into the room. Upon seeing Miyuki, his eyes narrow and he wiggles the rest of his body inside.
Somehow, you’ve managed to avoid having him seen by Hector, your sister, Hector’s family when they came to visit you, and Jerry. Sheer luck, you think, but mostly, you get visited by those guys in either the early morning or later in the evening. Miyuki times his visits in between.
You pop another fry into your mouth, unconcerned. “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yes,” he says distractedly to you, frowning at Miyuki. “I wasn’t aware you were visiting today.”
“I was in the area.”
“You were in the area?” His tone leaves much to be desired.
“Hector, don’t be a dick.”
Miyuki coughs. Hector frowns at you now, looking mildly betrayed.
“He’s just being nice,” you explain in a slightly exasperated tone, then holding out your fries. “Now come get some fries and leave us alone.”
He purses his lips, then after a few seconds, strides briskly over to you to take some of your fries, popping them into his mouth and giving a sidelong glance to Miyuki as he turns and walks back to the door.
“Love you,” you call.
“Yeah, yeah, love you, too, kid.”
The door shuts behind him. You sip at your Coke, grinning a little.
“Sorry about him. He’s still kind of mad about the home-run thing.”
“It’s fine. I get it. It was my fault.”
“Not really,” you say lightly, popping the lid on your drink and tossing it into the takeout bag.
Miyuki takes a second to scrutinize the puzzle, pick out a piece, then slot into place.
Then, he asks, “What makes you think that?”
“Occupational hazard of sitting where I was. I heard something on the news while they were talking about me — said I was in a home-run hot zone. That means a lot of the home-runs land in that section of that stands, right?”
A nod.
You shrug. “See? Now, I didn’t know that and admittedly, there weren’t any signs about it, either… but I should’ve been paying more attention to what was going on. The lack of signs, we can blame that on the park, maybe even the team management if it makes you feel better. But that ball going bonk on my head? Can’t blame you for it.”
He purses his lips, still studying the puzzle. You can sense his doubt.
“Seriously! Now if I was sitting, say, somewhere along the foul line…” you pause; he lifts his eyes. Finally, you grin and nudge his leg. “Even then, I wouldn’t have blamed you. I’d blame that one on the park. They should keep those areas netted or something.”
“You Americans do like to play it fast and loose with those parts of the stands.”
You straighten your shoulders, puff out your chest, and put on your most righteous expression, shaking your fist at him as you speak. “It is my god-given constitutional right as an American citizen to be whacked in the face by a foul ball and you can’t do anything about it!”
He laughs. You relax, laughing, too.
“So, then, they do it differently in Japan?”
“There’s always been netting alongside the foul line,” he says, nodding. “And there are always attendants standing near to make sure no one gets hurt by balls that do make it over. They do everything they can to make sure no one gets hurt.”
You whistle. “Very nice! Yeah, no, someone has to, like, sustain extreme brain damage before fans agree to putting up netting.”
You chuckle at your own words but he just nods and clears his throat, slotting in another few pieces to the puzzle.
“Anyway,” he says after a moment, “I just realized I haven’t asked.”
“Ask what?” you ask, tipping your head back as you bring the cup to your mouth; most of the Coke is gone, leaving behind the ice chips. You let a few pieces slide into your mouth, happily crunching down on it.
You make an inquisitive sound at the amused look he shoots you but he just shakes his head and continues his previous statement. “Why do they call you Tee?”
Ahhh. He’s heard the nickname a few times. Hector has sworn you off from any and all types of electronics but thank god for the modern advancements of technology, because you have been able to use your phone sparingly when it comes to texts and calls, usually just by Hey, Siri-ing the hell out of it.
Jerry’d called you a few days ago with a question about a song in the queue and he’d dropped the nickname. Your sister called you yesterday asking if you wanted her to bring you a shake from Señor Mangoes when she came in the evening and she’d used it, too. Then Hector just now as well.
“Oh! You know about Jerry, right? My friend slash sound engineer at the studio? Well… you know Tom and Jerry? That’s kind of where it’s from.”
He snorts. “So, that’s why you called him —?”
“Mouser,” you finish, grinning.
“And you are…”
“Tee. But I don’t mind Tom, either. Or some variation of, like, cat. Or just Cat.”
Miyuki looks faintly amused. “You’re so…”
“What?”
“Weird.”
“Nicknames aren’t weird! Nicknames are fun! And great branding!”
He laughs for a long time at that one.
Tumblr media
You are promptly discharged the next day at eleven. Your CT and X-ray scan come out fine; no issues on that front, with everything healing slowly. You’re doing well, all things considered. Really well. Dr. Maxwell is surprised at it but you think your general attitude towards everything helps significantly.
Details about your current well-being still won’t be released until the later part of the day, however, after you have your little outing of Miyuki.
Speaking of…
“Dude. Is it just me or are these letters a little bit blurry?”
“I think that’s the brain trauma.”
“Oh, true!”
Hector said it would be like that for a little while. Most of the major symptoms have subsided but you’ll still feel some measure of them for a while. Occasional misperception, occasional blurriness, occasional headaches, occasional sensitivity to light. You know. The usual.
The harder you try to focus, the worse it gets, so you just shake your head and put the menu down.
The two of you are tucked away in a corner of a local brunch place. Miyuki is as inconspicuous as usual, with the addition of the large menu firmly planted in front of his face, his back to the wall and yours to the rest of the restaurant.
You’re more than a little amused as, when the server comes by, he keeps the menu up, muttering an order for coffee.
“And you?” she asks, smile warming considerably as she looks at you. Her tag reads Naomi. She’s pretty.
“I’ll have a Coke. Thanks.”
“Of course.” She flashes you another sweet smile then walks off.
“You know, I would say you’re being dramatic but I think if she’d gotten a look at your face, she definitely wouldn’t have looked twice at me, so, thanks for that.”
He doesn’t remove the menu from his face. “Are you saying you think I’m handsome, tomcat?”
“Come on, dude, you’re super hot, we all know that. Don’t fish for compliments.”
He snickers.
“Anyway, what looks good on there? Everything looks incomprehensible to me right now.”
“I don’t know. What are you in the mood for?”
“Hmm. Do they have chicken?”
“Chicken and waffles?”
“Oh, solid. Yeah, I’ll do that.”
Naomi returns with your drinks and another warm smile toward you, then takes your order. Miyuki has to relinquish the menu to her after but you’re pleased to find she doesn’t even glance at him.
“You’re far too happy with yourself,” he says.
You wave a dismissive hand at him, head turned to watch her talk to a family; a one-year-old sits in a high-chair at the end of the table and you watch, taken, as she beams at the baby, cooing at him.
“What if she thinks we’re on a date and she’s making moves on you? What does that say about her?”
Eugh. He’s such a devil’s advocate.
“She’s probably thinking that my date is so rude by keeping his face shoved in his menu and neglecting me, so she’s shooting her shot.”
“Oh, please.”
You grin and shrug, sipping your Coke. “Gotta give people benefit of the doubt, man.”
He rolls his eyes good-naturedly. “Sure. Anyway, what kind of camera are you going to get?”
“That’s a good question…”
You discuss that until your food arrives. Chicken and waffles for you and an American breakfast for him — over easy eggs, hash-browns, sausage and bacon with a side of fluffy pancakes.
Everything is in order. Perfectly cooked, plates still hot and food equally fresh. A quick surveillance of your surroundings assures you, for the moment, that no one has yet noticed Miyuki. Or they have and the paparazzi are on their way. Either way, in the present moment, everything is fine.
Then you take a bite of your fried chicken.
That’s perfect, too. Crispy on the outside, seasoned well, the chicken itself tender and juicy.
Then your mouth starts tingling.
You set your fork down calmly and reach around for your tote bag hanging off the back of your chair.
“Hey, Miyuki?”
“Hm?”
“Did you see any seafood on the menu?”
“Yeah.” He spears a piece of sausage on his fork, glancing around. “They had salmon and then some fried shrimp bites, I think.”
“I thought so.” Your voice comes out strained, throat tightening as you dig through your bag. You have it, you know you do, you never go anywhere without it. Your mouth is growing itchy and so is the rest of your body.
“Why?”
“I’m, uh, kind of allergic to shellfish and I’m pretty sure they fry their chicken and shrimp in the same fryer.”
His head snaps towards you. At the same time, you free your Epipen from the bag and pop the blue cap.
You meet his eyes.
“Whoops,” is the last thing you say before jabbing the pen into the side of your thigh.
Tumblr media
“She’s only been out of the hospital two hours tops and you put her back here again? Are you kidding me?”
You’d normally defend Miyuki but you’re far too itchy to hold onto the thought long enough to say something. You shudder as Hector smooths anti-itch cream over the rash on your neck, arms, and legs with a wooden stick.
There’s also the matter of the stupid oxygen mask on your face. They’d given you albuterol to ease your breathing symptoms and you still have an IV line in your arm giving you antihistamine and cortisone for the inflammation of your airways. You still need the oxygen mask, though. For a few more hours.
Thankfully, however, you don’t need to speak up.
“Hector,” your sister hisses, giving him a look. “It’s not his fault. He didn’t know.”
You grunt in agreement then make a flimsy gesture to yourself.
You should’ve known better. But to be completely honest, you’d forgotten to even ask. You’re usually incredibly vigilant about your shellfish allergy but this time… you don’t know. You can probably blame it on your still-lingering concussion for your lapse in memory.
Hector sighs heavily. “You forgot?”
Another sound of agreement.
“Yes… yes… it’s likely the concussion.” He shoots another glare to Miyuki, who looks quite guilty, sitting at your bedside. “Which is your fault.”
“Hector.”
You jab your foot at him half-heartedly as he smooths cream over your thigh. Don’t make me kick you.
“None of this is your fault, Miyuki,” your sister says soothingly to him. “Really, we have you to thank for getting her back here in a nick of time.”
In yet another ambulance. How dramatic.
He clears his throat. “I’ll, uh, cover the bills for this one as well.”
“Yes, you will,” Hector mutters.
“Oh, for the love of —“
Hector finishes spreading the anti-itch cream over your rashes, then steps outside the curtain with your sister, probably to get a dressing down over his behavior to Miyuki. See, you knew he wasn’t fond of him because of the whole ball-meet-face thing and this, well, it doesn’t look great, either, but logically speaking, it is no one’s fault but your own. Why his dislike persists? You don’t know. You’d have to corner him about it one of these days.
You’re in the emergency room at the medical center, your bed cordoned off with just a thick curtain; your EKG monitor beeps a little unsteadily, the epinephrine still in your system after they’d given you another dose on the ride here, and the oxygen tanks behind the bed hiss quietly with each pull of air delivered to you. Similar sounds from the other areas reach your eyes. Quiet murmurs between doctor and patient, a baby crying somewhere.
Miyuki sighs, pulling off his cap and running his fingers through his hair.
Just like the day you were concussed, your memories of getting here are fuzzy. Mostly after you’d administered your Epipen to yourself. You know the major stuff, of course, like 911 being called, the ambulance, the pretty EMT telling you he was going to give you another dose of epinephrine and you trying to give him a thumbs up but the realization that he was really nice to look at ended up hitting you in that moment, making you slur out something about getting his number. You remember that one a little vividly, probably because he’d hit you with that dose of epinephrine immediately after, and also, it’s really embarrassing in hindsight. (Even more so because Miyuki was there with you. Christ.)
Either way, you definitely made a scene at that restaurant and well…
You feel a little bit bad.
But also…
“Hngh… hey…”
His head lifts. “What? Should I get —?”
“No. I just wanted to say sorry.”
He stares at you. “Sorry about what?”
“All… of this. Not great for laying low.”
“Not great for — Jesus. That’s not —” he shakes his head sharply. “Don’t… worry about that. It’s fine.”
“Did people —?”
“Yeah. Couple pictures.” He rolls his eyes there, not at you but the inconsiderate jerks who think it’s okay to sneak pictures of him during an emergency. “But it’s fine. Wendy’s dealing with everything. They’re releasing the previous stuff about you being discharged and then us getting lunch to celebrate it. And then lunch being derailed because you had an allergic reaction.”
“They’re not blaming you for it, right?”
“Couple jokes. Nothing I can’t handle. Seriously, worry about yourself, tomcat. And if anyone should be apologizing…” he grimaces, mouth tightening at the corners, uncomfortable and something else you can’t quite pinpoint. “I’m sorry. That… wasn’t supposed to go like that.”
You finally smile. “Hell of a story, right?”
If you two stay friends, you think you’ll have a great story to tell your kids one day.
He exhales a quiet laugh. “Yeah. Hell of a story.”
Quiet for a moment other than the beep of the machine and the hiss of the oxygen. You take a deep breath. Easier to do now. Still some lingering tightness, though.
“There’s a great taco truck in front of the radio station,” you eventually say. “We can go there for lunch or dinner or whatever when I’m out of here, and have a redo, ‘kay?”
“You…” he pauses and clears his throat. “You sure?”
“You still owe me a camera, buddy.” But hopefully the warmth in your smile tells you that regardless of that, you are very much sure.
He chuckles quietly, something like a smile curving his lips. It sends a shock through your system. This is your first time seeing it, something something real, genuine. Honest. Mostly, you get amused grins, the occasional sardonic smirk.
Though it’s small, it is still a brilliant thing, radiant in your eyes. His eyes crinkle with it.
Your heart skips a beat and you cough to cover up the monitor mimicking it.
His eyebrows furrow a little but you plow ahead.
“You know what I just realized?”
He humors you. “What?”
You beam at him. “I can finally show you pictures of my pets!”
That smile doesn’t appear again but the set of his mouth is still soft as he says, “You’re right. Show me.”
Miyuki grabs your phone from your tote bag but you don’t want to disrupt yourself.
You’re kind of splayed out on the bed, legs stretched out, arms down at your sides, and you don’t want to move for fear of setting off your rashes.
“Just do it for me,” you urge him, telling him your passcode. You don’t have anything to hide. Your home screen is cluttered with apps that should be organized and your wallpaper is a picture of the sunset on Black’s Beach. You ask him if he’s been and he says no. A travesty, you think. If your friendship survives after he fulfills his duties to buy you a meal and a new camera, you’ll have to take him.
“Go to my gallery.”
He does but he seems…
“What?”
“I’m just trying not to see something I shouldn’t.”
It takes a second for you to understand. Your face heats up.
“Hey! I would never!”
“You asked the EMT for his phone number when he told you he was giving you another dose of epinephrine.”
“He was very attractive! If I’d died there, I’d at least want him to know that.”
His face pinches.
You chuckle nervously. “Too soon?”
“A bit.”
“Right… anyway! I would never keep nudes on my phone… They’d be kept in an external hard drive. That way, if someone steals my phone they can’t get to them and I’m also not relying on some app to store them for me.”
“Oh, of course.”
You laugh, the sound a little scratchy. “Don’t be a jerk. Anyway, chillax. I have a folder for them.”
He turns your phone back to his face. “Which is?”
“It should be obvious — Batman and Robin!”
“How should that be obvious.”
You blink. “Did I not tell you their names?”
“No. You just said you had a Betta fish and a snail. Then you started talking about the cat you see around your apartment complex and how it scared you when it sprinted up the stairs next to you a few weeks ago.”
“He really did scare me, you know. He’s never gone that far out! He usually just hangs around by the laundry room… and I think that’s where the person who takes care of him lives, too…”
“Focus, tomcat.”
“Right! There’s a folder for them.”
“Ah.” He clicks on something, then drags his chair closer to you, angling your phone so you both can see it.
“Ooh, pick that video. It was really cool. Betta fish can recognize their owners, did you know that? He gets all excited whenever he sees me come in. Snails don’t do much but that’s okay. He’s supposed to keep the balance by being chill.”
“Wait, so who is who?”
“Batman is my snail and Robin is the Betta. Yeah, had a hard time deciding, just ‘cause Bettas can be a little aggressive, especially other Betta males, and I’m like, well, Batman is aggressive. Y’know, he’s the dark, Robin is the light. But then, snails are so slow and generally chill. Not that Batman is chill at all but he is old. So, I figured the snail is better for an older figure and the Betta for a younger one. Also, feel free to tell me to stop whenever. I get kind of carried away talking about them.”
He shrugs. “I’ve got nowhere to be.”
“Great! Prepare to unwillingly learn about DC Comics. So, we all know Batman and Robin, right? Batman is Bruce Wayne, of course, but then when you get to Robin, you have to specify who is who, because he’s had, like, six Robins…”
You assault Miyuki with all kinds of information about Bruce Wayne and his hoard of orphans for the next few hours. To his credit, he humors you. For the most part. He also makes fun of you for being a comicbook geek but this is coming from the same guy who, a few days ago, talked about baseball for four straight hours with you. Granted, you asked since you don’t know shit about baseball, other than the obvious stuff like… Hit the ball far. Get back to home plate. Score. That kind of thing. He was happy to drill you on the finer points of the game, though. It was the most he’d ever talked to you but it’s clear to you that that is because he really truly loves baseball.
So, if you’re a comicbook geek, he’s still a baseball nerd.
As the time passes, your rashes go away and most of your breathing issues abate. You still have to stay there until the evening, however, to make sure it doesn’t come back. Miyuki doesn’t leave other than to step out for a phone call — to Wendy, you presume — and to grab In-N-Out at your wish. Hector tries to protest (not for any real reason, just because of his apparent dislike of Miyuki, you think) but your sister overrules him, especially when Miyuki offers to grab stuff for them, too.
She gives him some extra cash to cover the order, even though you insist you have money to pay for your own, at the very least, but you both end up losing as he politely refuses to take the money.
With that also comes something else.
“I know I’ve endangered your life two separate times but if I give you my number, do you promise not to leak it?”
“As long as you make sure the fries are light-well, absolutely.”
He presses a hand to his chest, a mock solemn expression on his face. “I will do my best.”
You grin and exchange numbers so you can text him the orders, then he steps out, the curtain fluttering behind him.
“I like him,” your sister says.
“I don’t,” Hector mutters, glancing over your vitals.
“We know,” you say. “What’s with that, anyway?”
“I don’t think he’s as nice as he’s portraying himself to be.”
“Well, sure.”
Not nice, exactly. Snarky. Snide. Certainly a capacity to be callous. It is too easy for you to envision, with how he’s teased you sometimes, but you just let it roll off your back. If he wanted it to hurt, it would. He’s not rude, though. Not rude to people who don’t deserve that kind of behavior, like strangers. He keeps a lid on it. Likely because he has a public reputation to protect but still. As an adult, a grown ass man, you can’t just be outright cruel to people. It’s not right. You can tell he understands that. Oh, he has his own thoughts, sure, but he holds off. You appreciate that.
Not to say you don’t want him to be real with you but restraint is a hard thing to come by these days.
“But you also have to realize he came and visited me, like, everyday while I was here,” you point out. “He didn’t have to.”
“He feels guilty.”
“Doesn’t cancel out the fact that it was a nice thing to do. Look, I know what you think, Hector. You think I’m naive —”
“I don’t —”
“Yes, you do. It’s okay, though. I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it. Being like this is strategic. Necessary. I have to believe in the possibility of goodness. It may not look the same to anyone, but he is good and until he gives me a reason to think we shouldn’t be friends anymore — if we even manage to stay in contact after all of this is over — then I’ll give him the benefit of doubt.”
It might get you hurt. Sure. You know that. But you’d rather try than just cut your losses now. That is no way to live your life.
You’re only on this earth for a short period of time in the grand scale of the universe.
And even life itself only exists for a fraction of that time. The universe is barely an adolescent right now. Barely lived its life, which, for the rest of it, after all lifeforms cease to exist and stars die out, turning the universe into a cosmic boneyard strewn with the remnants of cold stars and black holes, will be cold, dark, and empty.
Even the black holes will die out eventually, some quadrillion years into the future. And the universe will keep expanding, endless. Empty.
But you are here now. And you will take advantage of that.
“We know,” your sister says softly, shooting Hector a displeased look. “We know, Tee. We trust you to take care of yourself.”
“Appreciate that. Now, where is the restroom? I think that single bite of chicken I had is finally exiting the stage.”
“Christ,” Hector mutters. Your sister giggles. You grin.
Miyuki returns fifteen minutes later, with Wendy in tow.
She breaks the news to all of you.
With the recent turn of events (that is, your dramatic moment at the restaurant), she and the rest of the Padres PR team see fit to hold a press conference rather than try and release a statement explaining everything. They have released a preliminary one assuring that you are fine and not actively dying but there are still a lot of rumors and talk swirling in the press and it’s just easier to gather the media in a room and answer the questions they have. Because if not, they’d certainly help themselves to any kind of plausible explanation.
The only thing is… they want you there, too.
Tumblr media
“Wen, I know you said to dress normally but is this fine?”
She spares a glance at you. You are in a pair of dark wash mom jeans, the ends rolled up, with a black ribbed high-neck tank, and your usual Docs. Your makeup is done, finished with your sangria red liquid lipstick. Your nails are freshly painted oxblood red since you’d let yourself pick at the black polish you had on previously. You actually have that shade of liquid lipstick but you figured you’d go with something a scant few shades lighter.
She shakes her head. “You look amazing. Don’t worry.”
You relax at that. “Thanks. You, too.”
She flashes you a warm smile in response. In the room adjacent to the hotel ballroom they’re hosting the press conference in, people bustle around. The Padres’ general manager, Leon Boyd, and another manager, Trevor Brown, a handful of the Padres public relations staff, including their bilingual liaison, Miranda Sato, who coordinates between the club and Japanese media. Wendy, of course, as Miyuki’s manager, and you…
“They didn’t send anyone over for you, then?”
“I called my supervisor about it yesterday. He was fairly unconcerned, didn’t think it was necessary.”
It’s not like you were going to go out there and speak on the behalf of Night Owl or the broadcasting company, KCSD. In fact, you were going to make that point specifically. But it would be best to cover your bases anyway (pun totally intended). That meant calling up your supervisor, Dennis, and asking him about it.
But you see, Dennis, a classically white Californian dude who wears board shorts and flip-flops to important meetings with investors and other higher-ups and has a bad habit of taking hits from his wax pen inside the studio and making it stink of weed, well, he doesn’t worry about much at all. He hardly does his job on top of that.
If you run into any problems with equipment or advertisers, you can hardly rely on him to help get anything done. You anticipated that he would be careless about the fact that you’re doing this press conference.
Sooo… you recorded the conversation.
Just for some assurances.
Maybe he is right and the company won’t care. But on the off chance that he is wrong, you don’t want him changing his tune and saying you never talked to him about it.
You’re not usually this suspicious of people — as mentioned before, you do like to give people the benefit of doubt and just generally believe in the goodness of humankind — but this is work. You aren’t about to be double-crossed. No way.
They should be grateful, if anything. Since they aren’t willing to promote the show, you will. This press conference is to clear the air and settle the facts but you being here and your return to the show imminent (like the next day imminent), it’ll work in your favor. There will be some questions strictly for you, like about returning to Night Owl. You cannot miss out on an opportunity to promote it. Even if it is because you got severely concussed then upon being discharged landed back in the ER with a severe allergic reaction.
That’s just how the cards fall and you are going to take every advantage you can.
It’s a little scary, since it won’t just be American media but Japanese media, too. Every word you say will be translated and transcribed to appear in the news afterward, to be viewed by most of the country. But they know that and Wendy promised you wouldn’t just be thrown to the wolves out there, that she and the other PR staff will help you out.
“No matter,” Wendy says, straightening the pink satiny blazer she has on. It’s a matching set. You like it a lot. “You won’t be speaking on their behalf.”
“Definitely not.”
“But I do have to ask… is there anything that might be brought up in there that could derail things?”
“About me or about the show?”
“Both.”
“Me, well, I’ve got a pretty clean record. The occasional drama with listeners if I say something they don’t like but nothing explosive.”
“That’s fine. Anything else?”
“Weeell…the company is thinking about shutting us down.”
She jolts, surprised. “Oh. Oh. Really?”
“It’s not, like, set in stone. But there’s been talk. Plus, they tried to lower my sound engineer’s pay, too.”
Jerry couldn’t afford that, though, not with taking care of his grandma — affectionately referred to as Nana by the both of you — and the prescriptions she had. So, you split some of your check into his. He doesn’t know and he won’t. That’s why you’re trying to promote the show so hard. To get things back on top.
“I see,” she says, frowning. “You think you can handle it if they ask or should I have someone step in?”
You tilt your head thoughtfully. “No. I got it.”
You didn’t care much to talk about any previous drama if they brought it up. Let them take the reins there. But if it came to the company potentially shutting you down… why not?
Wendy nods, a glint of respect in her brown eyes, then she tells you how everything else is going to go. A nearby makeup artist comes over to you to fix a few things, but they’re fairly approving of your appearance.
“We aren’t covering the bruise?” they reaffirm, eyes on your temple.
“Let them see it,” you say easily. Yeah, you hadn’t cared to conceal it. It’s still tender to the touch and probably would’ve taken several layers of concealer to hide but also, yeah, let them see it.
They nod and step away to join the others.
You’re a few minutes from stepping out to begin the conference when Miyuki finally makes his appearance.
“Where have you been?” you chuckle, watching a team of makeup artists attack him. Fixing his hair, blotting out the sweat at his temples, concealing the circles under his eyes. Another set of his hands straightens his t-shirt and someone else takes a lint roller to it. He lets it all happen with the ease of someone incredibly used to it.
“Slept in too late,” he says. “But in general, I make it a rule not to be too early for these sorts of things.”
“Sure. Makes sense.” You eye the rest of his appearance. You haven’t seen him in anything other than joggers and dri-fit workout shirts. Today he’s in a dark blue t-shirt that stretches nicely over his shoulders and medium wash jeans. Nothing fancy and yet, he looks gorgeous as usual.
“One minute!” someone calls out in warning. The makeup team disperses as quickly as they appeared. Everyone lines up by the door, with you on Miyuki’s left and Wendy on your right.
He frowns at you. “Why do you look taller?”
You beam, lifting your foot. “Docs.”
It’s not anything crazy. The platform is only about an inch and a half thick. A minuscule amount, really. You’re surprised he noticed.
He squints. “Of course you wear Doc Martens and dark clothes.”
“Ha!”
The door opens. Your heart climbs to your throat. You’re used to broadcasting your voice to thousands of people but this is different. This is you and your face, not just your voice. The reporters will be getting everything and if you don’t calm yourself, there will be nothing left for you.
“Don’t trip over yourself,” he tells you unhelpfully.
“Don’t make me push you off that stage.”
He snickers. You take a deep breath. From the moment you follow him out, everything blurs. Cameras flash, blinding you. You somehow manage to take your seat at the table. A heavy black cloth is draped over it, so you can squeeze your hands between your thighs underneath and try to anchor yourself. The chair you’re sitting in is plush beneath you, made of a velvety kind of material. The cloth on the table is more scratchy but still heavy over your legs. You plant your feet firmly on the stage. A mounted microphone sits in front of you.
Rows of reporters sit in chairs in front of you. Photographers and videographers stand behind them. It seems perfectly split down the middle, with American reporters on the left and Japanese reporters on the right.
For the sake of the conference and the reporters, you get formally introduced. Then Boyd takes over, explaining the situation to them. He talks about your status on the day of the discharge, that you were cleared to be released but there was still some healing to go as far as the fracture and confusion went. Then he sets the context of your lunch with Miyuki, that he wanted to see how you were and talk to you.
(There is no mention of his prior visits to you in the hospital.)
They talk about the allergic reaction and your impromptu trip back to the medical center. You were discharged again last night with a clean bill of health and by today, you’re mostly fine. Some scratchiness lingering in your throat but nothing to worry about.
As he speaks, Miranda, the bilingual liaison, translates. It makes for a lot of noise at once but you have to get used to it because she’ll be doing the same for you.
Once finished, he asks, “Any questions?”
Every hand in the room shoots up. Some questions are already spilling out of mouths, reporters clambering over each other.
“One at a time, one at a time,” he cautions.
They settle, mostly, and he picks out a raised hand in the left section.
You suppress a full-body jolt as you hear your name. Your name. The first question — and they want to talk to you?
Christ.
Your eyes find a face in the first row. “Hi. Jessica Ramos with the Washington Post. Can I ask what this past week and a half has been like for you? I mean, you’ve kind of been thrown unceremoniously into the spotlight here.”
Every eye in the room is turned on you now. But you focus on Jessica Ramos. In her hands is a notepad. Her nails are painted sage green and the bag at her feet has a felt-print green ostrich embroidered on it.
“To be honest,” you start, relieved to hear your voice is light. “I’m a little convinced that I’m actually in a coma at the hospital and this is a fever dream. Or a concussion dream, to be technically correct.”
Everyone laughs. You relax, smiling faintly.
“No, it’s been very… strange. But I wasn’t allowed to be on anything electronic for the entire week I was in the hospital, which helped mitigate most of those effects. I’m sure if I’d been watching everything unfold in real time — that would’ve been overwhelming.”
Another hand from the right section pops into the air. Boyd nods.
Your name first, in accented English, then a question in Japanese reaches your ears. Miranda is translating in the next second.
“Will you be returning to Night Owl anytime soon?”
“Tomorrow, actually. I’ll be back. Unless another concussion takes me out. Or an allergic reaction.”
“Don’t worry,” Brown says. “We’ll keep you safe.”
More laughter.
A hand from the right side again. Another question translated.
“Are you a fan of the Padres? Is that why you were there?”
You grin. “Not at all. That was the first time I’d set foot in Petco Park and that was the first game I’d ever seen. Of the Padres and honestly, of baseball, too. I’ve never been much of a fan.”
A quick follow-up question in everyone’s mind. Why were you there?
You’d gone to the game to buff up your portfolio and to see if anything you shot could be sold off. To them or to Getty Images. The ticket was from your sister, as she and her flight crew received them from one of the kinder pilots she had but it was only a single ticket and she wasn’t too interested in baseball, either. You saw the opportunity to make a little money on the side and you took it.
You give them the cliff notes version of that. Mostly about getting some pictures for your portfolio. You leave out the money part.
A few people make some jokes about your poor luck — your first ever baseball game and you get severely concussed? — then they continue with the questions.
For you and for Miyuki and then even some for the managers, like about whether they’ll make any changes to the stands. Which they won’t. It’s too far out. You get that. You don’t even think they net those areas in Japan.
Then you and Miyuki get a question together.
“Hi. Haley Martin with the San Diego Union-Tribute. I wanted to ask you guys — will you keep in touch after this?”
Every reporter in the room holds in a breath, leaning forward, pens poised and recorders ready.
Jeez. These guys are desperate.
You can’t help but make your jokes.
“You know,” you start thoughtfully, “I think in the interest of living a very long life… no.”
They laugh, including Miyuki.
“Seriously, guys,” Haley says, smiling faintly, too. “Will you be friends?”
“I’ll only be friends with her if she promises to start supporting the Padres.”
You laugh. Miyuki gives you a grin.
“Only if you pay for my tickets.”
“We’ll give you a lifetime season pass, if you want,” Brown puts in. “Just don’t sue us.”
You snort. The others laugh.
“Well?”
You beam. “We’ll be best friends forever.”
“Now, I didn’t say that —”
“No take-backsies.”
That gets everyone going. He laughs, too, which is really all you care about.
“A few more question, folks, then we’ll wrap this up,” Boyd says.
A familiar hand. Haley again.
She directs this to you.
“Is it true that KCSD plans to shut down Night Owl?”
Murmurs erupt in the room, bodies shuffling. Miranda briefly falters in her translation before completing it.
She’s been holding onto that one. You can tell. There is no malice in it, though.
They’re reporters, journalists, this is their job. To report. To chase every lead. To keep people honest. There are lines, of course, between responsibility and irresponsibility. This question is very much responsible. No one can dispute that. And you are just one person. If the company had sent someone down, they could’ve handled it.
As it is…
“I don’t speak for the KCSD. I’d just like to say that. I’m only speaking for myself, someone who does coincidentally happen to be Night Owl’s host. To set the context of your question, before all of this happened, Night Owl had experienced a drop in traffic. We weren’t getting much interaction but there were still people listening. We knew that. I’m happy to be there regardless. I know some people are listening, most often college kids staying up late and well, some night owls, to be sure.
“But in the world we live in, that’s not enough. So, there was some talk about maybe downsizing the show. But that was a while ago, before this happened. I know we’ve gotten many more hits since and I’m glad for it. But right now at this moment, I don’t know. Things have changed and I couldn’t tell you.”
Haley nods. “Thank you.”
“Sure.”
Feels nice to let it all out, you think, as they start to wrap things up. Though you do feel a headache starting to form. Great.
The rest of the questions are for Miyuki. Something about his contract. You don’t pay too much attention.
You’d been fair to them, you think. More than fair. But it’s not really about that. You need to make them act, to make a decision. Either they shut you down or they don’t. Will the popularity hold? Who knows? But you can hope that it will, that people will realize you’re there, and they’ll hang around. At the very least, you can keep going for a little while longer.
The press conference ends. You all shuffle back into that adjacent room. You end up getting pulled into a conversation with Boyd and Brown about that season pass but you politely decline.
“Well,” he says, “the offer stands. And speaking of offers, if you’d like it, we would love to have you join our photographers.”
Most of the PR team has dispersed, going to handle the outpouring of news that will hit in a few hours. The makeup team is gone, too. It’s just a few security guards, some of the managerial staff, then you guys. Wendy, Miyuki, and Miranda stand a couple feet away, conversing quietly.
You blink. “Is this to make sure I don’t sue you?”
Brown snorts. “You wouldn’t be able to.”
“True.” But he doesn’t need to be so smug about it.
“No,” Boyd says. We’ve seen your stuff. We think you’d be great with us. We’re always looking for more cameras and we’re willing to raise your pay, too, to beat out whatever you’re making at the station, too.”
“I… appreciate that.”
“You don’t have to give us an answer now. But preferably sometime next year in January, before we start spring training in February.”
“Right. Thanks.”
You don’t know how to react. You’ve never gotten this kind of offer before. Not for photography, anyhow. You do mostly freelance work. Take pictures of weddings, religious events, et cetera.
“Think about it,” he says, smiling, then he and Brown turn to join the others.
What just happened.
A quiet chuckle behind you. You turn, finding Miyuki. His arms are crossed, an amused expression on his face.
“You look disturbed.”
“I feel disturbed. Uh. Anyway. We’re on for dinner tomorrow, right? Five o’clock?”
He nods. “What are you doing today?”
“Spending some quality time with Batman and Robin and turning off my phone for the rest of the day.”
“Probably a good idea. Well… you didn’t choke out there. You were actually very…”
“What?”
“Calculating. With the stuff about them shutting you down. It all worked in your favor, didn’t it?” His tone is knowing.
You smile and shrug. “I’ll do what it takes to keep the show running.”
“It means that much to you?”
“You’d do the same for baseball, wouldn’t you?”
“Touché.” He almost looks impressed.
You try not to relish it too much.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah. See you.”

I wanted the past to go away, I wanted to leave it, like another country; I wanted my life to close, and open like a hinge, like a wing, like the part of the song where it falls down over the rocks: an explosion, a discovery; I wanted to hurry into the work of my life; I wanted to know, whoever I was, I was
alive for a little while.

warnings: none

with a huge test that took up a chunk of your final grade coming up, you needed to be in your best game mode to get a good mark. this course was not easy, and if you fail this evaluation, you might need to redo the whole thing again.
you set up your laptop, stationary, and a nice cup of coffee at your desk and put on your headphones to get you rolling. before you started, you sent your boyfriend a quick text:
you: hey stupid, i might not be on my phone starting from now so if i don’t reply im studying for that stupid thing this weekend. have fun w practice, yk i love you
with a sip of your coffee, you sighed and rolled your shoulders back and got going. notes upon notes, memorization upon memorization, time flew by so quick that you even forgot to go use the washroom. you were so into it that you didn’t even hear your door open.
“she’s been like that for hours,” your mom whispered to miyuki, who only chuckled at your slumped form. in one hand, he held a small plastic bag filled with drinks and snacks. “i’ll leave you to it,” your mom smiled before closing the door (which you still didn’t notice).
slowly, miyuki walked stealthily towards you and shook your shoulders. “boo!”
“OH MY GOSH,” you shrieked, taking off your headphones only to see miyuki clutching at his stomach, laughing at you. “what the hell are you doing here, kazuya?? you scared the living shit out of me.” he sat on the edge of your bed and pulled you out of your chair by your wrists, making you sit on his lap before hugging you by your waist. “sorry pretty, thought it’d be funny.”
“well it wasn’t.”
“i laughed though.”
you got up and planted yourself back in your seat. “well? what are you doing here?” he sarcastically gasped, “am i not allowed to be here?”
“i told you i was gonna study.”
he held up his hands in defense, chucking again. “don’t worry, i’ll just be here. just wanted to be with you.”
a blush rose to your cheeks as you started writing away in your notebook once again. “whatever,” you mumbled, your heart beating twice as fast. he pulled out the scorebook and started to study it, and soon enough both of you were immersed in your own worlds.
that is, until you felt little things being thrown at you. “kazuya,” you grumbled, “stop throwing popcorn at me.”
“i am not throwing it at you.” he continued to eat the popcorn, but also continued to throw small pieces at you. “come y/n, let’s watch an episode of the show we’re watching.”
“i told you i have to study.” you replied, “go watch it.”
“no. we need to watch it together— stop throwing popcorn back at me!”
now it was your turn to laugh at him, but he took your wrists and pulled you on top of him, spilling the popcorn all over the floor.
“kazuya—mmph!” before you could scold him, his pair found yours, and you know you could never deny his kisses. he made sure you both stayed like that for a while.
“just one episode, please? you have days to study and you need to take a break, though i shouldn’t be talking,” he smiled and turned on his laptop, “i’ll let you go after one episode.”
you hadn’t noticed how long you’d been studying for until you felt the aching pain in your lower back. miyuki immediately massaged that area for you, making you groan into his shirt.
“see? take a break, grandma.”
“shut up.”
“love you?”
“love you too, stupid.”

Pro! Miyuki Kazuya X Reader
THINGS THAT MAKES MIYUKI KAZUYA REALLY SAD AND THINGS THAT MAKE HIM HAPPY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi! I’m back!!!!
I’ve been so stressed with deadlines and school works and recordings that I got really sick, so I had to rest. While resting, I was watching a reality TV show that got me inspired on writing this.
P.S. I know that all my posts have been Daiya No Ace related but I assure you I’m also a fan of other animes [e.g. Haikyuu!, Kimetsu No Yaiba, Kuroko no Basuke, Love Is Hard For an Otaku, and so many moreee]. I just can’t find the right idea and and motivation to write them.
P.P.S. I’ve barely edited this so do forgive me for misspelled words and wrong grammars [if there are any].
Don’t drown. Keep dreaming.
- Tine
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things that made Miyuki Kazuya really really sad:
Miyuki Kazuya has always worried that his son won’t remember him once he comes back from the week long games. His son is just 3 months old. Kamiya, his teammate, said that his own daughter once forgot about him when he couldn’t go home for half a year. He heard that Kamiya’s daughter thought he was a stranger. He remembered Mei laughing at Carlos’ face and Yamaoka offering tips [the tips weren’t good, it made Kamiya cry more]. Kamiya’s daughter was already a year old then, what more of his son who was just 3 months old?
Miyuki gets really sad when he comes home but no one is there. When the kids started schooling, he knew that the time he could spend with his kids is getting shorter. Balancing out the games, his photo shoots and spending time with his family is really hard. Heck, he would ditch his photo shoot of you guys call, you and the kids are his priority. So he got really sad that when he came home after the winning the season [with cake and take-home gifts], there was no one at the house. Even the dog is not there. [Y/N came back and saw him sulking while preparaing a meal. Turns out you just went to fetch the kids from the nursery].
Miyuki got really sad when his 2nd son didn’t want to play baseball. He loves baseball. You love baseball. His eldest and his little princess love baseball too. The both of you already made up your minds that if your children wanted something, you would help them to achieve it. But Miyuki can’t help but feel sad when his 2nd son didn’t want to play baseball, but chose volleyball instead. It’s not that he felt sad that his son won’t play the sport he loves. He is sad because he won’t be able to help his son on trainings, on what to eat, or what strategies to use [Baseball and Volleyball are very different]. Kazuya could only offer what he knows about guessing batters [which he compared to as spikers] in a catcher’s perspective [which he compared as a setter]. Turns out, both father and son, as well as the other kids, bond well other game strategies.
Things that made Miyuki Kazuya really really happy:
Kazuya was ecstatic when he saw you with the kids at the bleachers of the finals of the 20xx World Series. He was so sure you wouldn’t come. The kids were a handful and you were also working on your business. He can’t help the grin that painted his face when his family was cheering for him on his 3-run homerun at the bottom of the 4th inning. After the game, he immediately had you ushered to the dugout where the families of his fellow teammates were there too. His friends [Eijun and Sanada] were laughing at him because he teared up a little. He thought: Who wouldn’t when your little princess says “You’re the best, Papa!”?
Cuddle times are the rarest so Kazuya cherishes them the most. Cuddle times are the most intimate family bonding you and the kids have with Kazuya. You know very well that you can’t go out that much with him because he is so popular [he hates it]. He can’t take you and the kids to the mall or to the amusement park, so you guys settled for a weekly movie marathon on the living room of your townhouse. Your cuddle times are the only time where Kazuya could completely relax and you know it would always end up with Kazuya and the kids sleeping halfway in the movie, all huddled up in one blanket.

how sawamura, miyuki, yuki, and kuramochi text (friends + s/os)
will most likely do a part 2 with more boys at a later date! these got freakishly long because i am, at my core, a very mad. also might revisit as i get re-familiar with the characters, i just had this idea floating around in my head. also the way these got pro
sawamura eijun
no matter who he texts, it’s always extremely extra. not only does he always give more information than you asked for – ex. if you text him wya? he will give you a play by play of his entire route or something
he also uses tons of emoticons. and yes I do mean emoticons, baby boy has a flip phone. ifhe does eventually get a smart phone, then this boy overuses tf out of emojis. he’s the sort of person that sees someone use a combination of emojis he likes and then tries to copy them, but uses it completely incorrectly, but its v cute.
if you send him a meme, he will respond with an unnecessary amount of hahas.
when he’s texting his lil bae, they’re always on his mind so he ofc texts them every thought that comes to his mind! when he sees something that reminds him of you, he won’t hesitate to share it with you.
if you have been together for a long time, then we will definitely text you words of affirmation and be very honest/blunt about how he feels about you. he’s also always sure to ask you about your day - and he seriously cares. but i still i feel like with a s/o he would prefer facetime to texting just because he likes to see you :)
overall, a very adorable texter and his enthusiasm is just as contagious when texting as it is in person. he’s kind of clueless so he doesn’t pick up on subtext. so be blunt, just like he will be with you~
kuromochi youichi
my bias might be showing here, but I feel like he is one of the most well-adjusted boys in terms of being ready for a serious relationship tbh (at least post-high school). i mean we all saw that he regularly corresponded with wakana wish that were me lmao
i think he would most often use proper capitalization, but not to the point where he uses a period after every text
would send his friends news articles about his favorite fighting games where u like gaming or not
a meme fiend in general. the sort of person who uses reaction images of people he knows. (if you’re dating, he would still have a stash of funny pics/screenshots of you on ft, but he’d ofc only use them with you <3). his convos with his friends are rarely serious
i don’t think he’d be the type to text haha out loud, but he does use LOL on occasion. with close friends/his lil bae he might send a voice memo of him laughing hysterically if you send him something REALLY funny. ugh my annoying king <3
unlike eijun he’s the king of being perceptive / picking up subtext.
similarly, i do think he’s pretty reliable, but for friends i feel like he might make a lil bit of a stink lmao. like lets say a friend wants him to pick something up for them, he might play like he won’t do it then miraculously shows up with the requested item. its giving tsundere vibes on the low.
with his partner: i feel like he would use emojis when he’s trying to be ~cute~. i think with a established partner he’d be pretty flirty still but he’s v much whipped for his partner so its way more mushy than it would be early in the relationship.
yes your name has hearts/stars in his phone. mans is a SAP for you
his love language is more quality time imo, so I think he values time spent with you over texting time. so a lot of your texts might be asking you to come over to hang out / get a meal or vice versa
like eijun he wants to hear about YOU, and is very supportive and good at advice when he wants to be. he can be goofy but this is how he shows you he cares/sees you as more than a friend
he’s a blushy/shy boy with his s/o esp early in the relationship, so he might be hesitant or nervous to say “i love you” or anything like that outright, but you know anyway, which just makes the times when he does outright say it that much sweeter.
miyuki kazuya
i mean it goes without saying that this man is snarky. he’s not a meme king himself but he enjoys when people send them to him and will usually play off the meme to make his own jokes.
i feel like he also likes deep-fried memes or the very abstract, post-modern memes. miyuki is good at making other people laugh, but he has a generally very-off brand humor and the things that make him cackle hardest are either at someone else’s expense (very similar to kuramochi, so they bond a lot over that) or just indiscernible without access to a huge layer of context/background
saves the reaction photos kuramochi sends him, but doesn’t usually use them. but seeing an ugly pic of eijun yelling never fails to make him grin LMAO
i think he also texts A LOT about baseball, even more so than these other baseball dummies. texts his teammates a lot of articles he reads or clips from games/cool plays. this is mostly about texts, but in terms of social media I think miyuki uses twitter/instagram the most especially for baseball related reasons, while kuramochi uses snapchat the most.
he probably texts a lot about baseball as well, both seriously and playfully
i can see him using hahas and LOLs in equal measure, but he would also utilize the haha reaction if he had an iphone. this boy does value his wit so he would definitely have commentary about any memes or jokes he’s sent
you won’t win a joke war against him, he will definitely one-up whatever you send him with either a one-liner or another joke. how tf does he do it?
definitely ignores people/conversations if he really wants to - but ofc he never does that to his BAE
if miyuki give you a dry one-line response...he’s not interested at all or he’s feeling frustrated about something else. but when he’s really happy? he will text his friends all the time and spam them! i see him as someone who enjoys texting when he has the attention span/state of mind for it. and when he’s texting his s/o his texting gets even more ~flavorful~
wit his lil bae: i don’t think miyuki would switch it up much w his s/o. is probably even more teasing with you over text than he is with his friends, which is saying something.
like talking with you just by nature of you being his partner. prob prefers texts to facetime because text kinda allows for maximum snark
he LIVES for you guys’ witty back and forth
if he’s traveling for work or something, will definitely relish in you guys binge texting a tv show or something but just making funny commentary (or he’ll just send you funny commentary to get a reaction)
he can dish it and he’s also not a super sensitive guy so he can take it tenfold from you as well. nothing y’all wouldn’t be used to when talking in person!
sometimes when texting him you’ll want to beat his a*s because he can be so cheeky but its endearing in a way. he definitely adds emojis to the end of his more annoying messages to give it that loveable vibe (and it works ofc, we love u miyuki)
he’s kinda clingy on the low so i think he’d prefer a partner that’s more open with their affection via text than he is. he would live for your random ilys or whatver throughout the day. also would not mind at all if you updated him on your actions throughout the day or sent him snaps - might not be able to respond to everything, but will react and appreciate it. very likely to make jokes about whatever you’re doing.
would also apologize over text. he’s not always used to apologizing can be awkward about it, so text makes it easier for him.
he would use emojis w you in a joking/ironic way. would absolute use those dumb but genius emoji combinations
yuki tetsuya
i’m literally cracking up thinking about texting him. he is one of my ultimate baes but im sorry i just know he texts dry asf. but its part of his charm!
has a flip phone. either never upgrades or gets the chunkiest most basic android if he is forced to
the thing is this man thinks that he is infusing all his texts with, like, tajin level seasoning, when in reality its pepper
uses punctuation. always. exclamation marks are used sparingly to express excitement.
but i can’t get the image out of my head of an upset tetsuya texting you a simple angry emoji (or the angry emoticon >:( LOL) if he’s reeeeeeally mad. but its v cute i can’t take him seriously. i just want to give him a hug <3
but you know what he is so PASSIONATE about whatever he’s talking about that his passion bleeds into his text through sheer quantity of words and depth of thought. ultimately, all his conversations end up being extremely flavorful in terms of content. he is surprisingly good at having deep conversations over text.
he’s better at holding conversations with more extroverted personalities, truthfully.
he’s another one who sends random things to people when he thinks about them. miyuki of course gets so many texts/thoughts about shogi. if you get a random haiku, poem, or quote from testu, that means you’re blessed enough to be in his inner circle! he definitely thought of you when he read it and and wants you to respond!
with bae: he doesn’t really change up his texting style tbh, but he has a stronger outward reaction to what YOU text in response.
definitely the type to smile almost imperceptibly at his phone as he texts you, even if you send him something like “hey i’m at the store, want anything?”
he’s not great as verbal affection early in the relationship, so you’ll have to discern his love/affection. however baby boy is NOT afraid to just straight up say he loves you, he does it all the time and early.
he’s KNOWN for being reliable and responsible, so he will be at your beck and call when he’s able to for anything you need, but his heart is also warmed by the thought of you reciprocating that care. if your texts show him you’re thinking of him just like he does too. he’s very gentle and sweet, and checks up on you when he’s able to see if you need anything at all.
he might be reliable, but that doesn’t mean that he’s the quickest guy to respond to texts. he’s a busy guy, and he doesn’t think about his phone all the time, but he will always get back to you (bae does not play when it comes to completing things).
if they came up with a shogi game for gamepidgeon and tetsu had an iphone, your phone probably would be spammed with requests for games lol.
this is my first time doing headcanons like this so please let me know what you think or give me tips on how to improve! I really enjoying thinking about it so I hope to do more in the future <3

he has a terrible sleeping schedule so, it’s sort of rare that you get to sleep or nap together
it’s just rare that his brain quiet down enough for a nap
so even when you’re relaxing together he just doesn’t fall asleep even if you do
but, when you do fall asleep with each other, it’s then that you notice Miyuki Kazuya is a clinger
Eyelashes fluttering rapidly, you blinked your blurry vision clear as you slowly came to to consciousness. From the darkness of your shared room, you knew it was still night out, and your brows furrowed in deep confusion. It was rare that you woke up in the middle of the night, even rarer for you to be so damn hot while you were asleep.
Exhaling a soft sigh, your body shifts, and it is then you notice the arm that’s possessively wrapped around your waist, holding you close to the hard chest of your boyfriend. Your brows raised in surprise. No wonder you were sweating bullets, you were pressed against a damn furnace.
With another exhale, you attempt to dislodge yourself from Miyuki’s grasp, and retreat to the other side of your shared bed to at least cool down, yet at your slight movement, Miyuki’s hand that was previously clutching the other side of your waist, shot up to your shoulder, yanking you back into the hard planes of his chest. You gasped, eyes widening in shock. For a brief moment, you wondered if he was awake, yet his usual laughter was absent, and his sleep heavy voice didn’t fill your ears.
No, the only sound in the dark room was his light breathing as he clutched you to his body like a child who was afraid of their favorite teddy being snatched away from them as they slept.
Briefly, you speculated if Miyuki knew about how he clung to you when the sun had long ago set. If he knew how tightly he held you, how he somehow always ended up pressed up against you no matter how far you fell asleep from each other, how hard it was for you to go pee in the middle of the night simply because you practically had to wrestle free of his grasp.
But, truthfully? You couldn’t find yourself minding too much that he clung to you in his slumber. Not when he was burying his face into your neck, and pressing his hand over your heart.
Tumblr media
falls asleep quickly at night, yet naps are virtually nonexistent
he just doesn’t really nap, they’re pointless for him. if he’s that tired he’d just go to bed earlier
absolutely loves for you to fall asleep on top of him, it’s like having his own personal weighted blanket
lets you nap on him, he won’t fall asleep, but fuck does he love having you close
A soft hum leaves your lips as you snuggled in closer to your boyfriend’s chest, eyes trying to focus on the TV in front of you. The horror movie that played failed to hold your attention as you’d been dozing in and out since Ryou had turned it on.
“Oh? So you’re awake again?” You heard your boyfriend ask, sharp teasing tone filling the air of your living room. Laughing softly, voice heavy with sleep, you licked your lips as you pressed yourself closer to him.
“I can’t help that you chose such a boring movie, Ryou.” You teased lifting your head to look at the smirking face of your boyfriend. You watched as his brows lifted, smirk taking on a sharper edge that sent a tingle down your spine.
His hand that somehow snuck it’s way inside of your loose lounge pants, gripping the rounded flesh of your ass as he pressed your pelvis closer to his. A soft gasp of surprise leaves your lips, and your eyes dart up to meet his hooded gaze. In his grip there is a dangerous warning, a nearly delicious undertone that causes your own teasing smirk to spread onto your face, mirroring his.
Smoothing your hands up the smooth planes of Ryousuke’s chest, a soft giggle leaves your lips as he lowers his head down to yours. His lips hover over your own, and the soft exhale he releases makes you want to be even closer to him, even though that’s virtually impossible.
You were so sure that he was going to kiss you that you didn’t even notice his uncopied hand reaching towards your face. Yet the moment you spotted his hand in your peripheral, his fingers were already pinching the tip of your nose. A sharp squeal left your lips as you shot away from him.  Ryou’s laughter fills the air, drowning out the screams that erupted from your TV, and you couldn’t help the pout that twisted onto your lips.
Fuck, why did you fall in love with a sadist?
Tumblr media
he talks in his sleep
like he just doesn’t say broken words, no he has full conversations
won’t remember anything when he wakes up
so please don’t try to have important conversations with this poor baby while he’s sleepy
It was rare for you to fall asleep before Isashiki. It was even more rare that you got to witness him in such a deep slumber. He just tended to stay up longer than you did, yet today after a particularly long day enduring uni classes, he’d passed out as soon as his head hit the pillow. You didn’t mind being up while Isashiki was asleep, it was nice to see his usual scowling face relaxed and well....at peace.
With a soft smile, you scooted closer to your boyfriend, hand reaching out to touch his cheek. Your eyes roamed his face, fingers tracing his jawline before you tangled them into his hair.
You felt your heart squeeze because he was just so....beautiful to you, and you knew if you said this to him while he was awake he’d just blush and brush off your compliment. But, you meant it. He truly was a beautiful man in your eyes. You continued to stroke your boyfriend’s sandy brown strands, yet when his eyelashes began to flutter and his body shifts closer to yours, your fingers halt.
“Jun?” You whispered softly, expecting to see his honeyed gaze to meet yours, yet his eyes remained shut as his lips parted.
“Hm?” He grunted out, and your brows furrowed in confusion.
“Are you awake?” You whispered back, moving even closer to your boyfriend, to see if he was just trying to fall back asleep.
“No” He sighed out, face unchanging from his peaceful expression. Your brows furrowed even more and your lips twitched down into a frown. Was he playing around or was he really still sleep?
You wait for a moment, expecting to see him peak on eye open and shoot you a sleepy smile that he reserved for you, yet as the minutes pass you realize he really is asleep. Soft chuckle leaves your mouth because of course Jun talked in his sleep. Resting your head back on your own pillow, you resume stroking his hair, attempting to sooth yourself into your own slumber.
“Love you, doll.”
A soft smile spreads across your lips and you press a chaste peck against Isashiki’s cheek. Even in his dreams, he was making you feel like the only person who held his heart.
Tumblr media
a sleepy tetsuya is a clingy testuya
the two of you share a bedtime simply because he refuses to go to bed without you.
he just likes the comfort you bring and loves being lulled to sleep by your breathing
he’s just at peace with you, ok?
“I promise I’m almost finished, Tetsu.” You cooed out to your boyfriend as you felt his heavy gaze on you.
He was becoming angsty, and you knew that he was tired and wanted to retire to bed, but an upcoming assignment kept you glued to your living room floor, eyes still roaming over the document in front of you.
You had to give Yuuki his props, he was trying to not rush you. Yet, you could tell from the way he constantly shifted on the couch that he was soon going to reach his limit. You knew you shouldn’t have agreed to that shower before finishing your work, yet you couldn’t resist Yuuki. Especially when he asked so nicely.
Tugging your bottom lip between your teeth, your eyes dart to the digital clock on your laptop, and a soft sigh escapes you. There was no way you were completing this assignment tonight, yet the more stubborn part of your brain pushed you to still attempt to continue to work on it. Yet, before your brain could even dive back deep into your work, a tanned hand is closing your laptop for you.
Your head shoots up in shock, and you meet Yuuki’s heavy lidded gaze. The shock melts off your face, because your boy is sleepy, and you know that he won’t be able to hold on any longer. Yuuki’s fingers move through your loose hair, down your neck and arm as you stand to your feet, and the moment you’re steady, he’s guiding you to your bedroom.
It doesn’t take long for the both of you to fall into bed, and the moment your body meets the mattress, he’s resting over you, head on your chest as his breathing begins to even out.
“Love you,” Yuuki whispers to you, arms wrapping against your hips as leverage to press himself closer to your form. A soft smile spreads on your lips as your own eyelids flutter closed.
“Love you too, Tetsu.”
Tumblr media
a wild sleeper
sometimes he wakes up on the floor, sometimes he wakes up on top of you, sometimes you wake up hanging off the edge of the bed.
he just...moves a lot in his sleep, ok
and the only solution to this issues seems to be you sleeping on top of him.
Walking in on a sleeping Kuramochi was always a sight to see.
A giggle left your lips as your eyes roamed over his sprawled out form from your position at his bedroom door. Your wondered if he forgot that he’d invited you over for the weekend, and thankfully his roommate was still at the apartment to let you in.  Yet, you didn’t find yourself being too disappointed that he was fast asleep across his bed as you knew that the week he had was a tiring one.
Placing your overnight bag in it’s usual spot on his desk chair, you began to roam through it before taking out the items you needed to complete your nightly routine. Your eyes darted towards your snoring boyfriend, another peel of laughter escaping you as you watched him turn to flop onto his stomach.
Shaking your head, you walked into his onsuite bathroom and began to do your nightly routine. Once you were finished, you entered your boyfriend’s bedroom once again and crawled onto his bed. Thankfully, he wasn’t in too weird of a position, lying flat on his stomach, one arm curled under his pillow. A soft smile toyed on your lips and placed a brief kiss on his bare shoulder blade before resting your upper body on his back.
While a night in playing the latest Mortal Kombat or catching up on your shared shows would’ve been fun, you had to admit curling up on top of your boyfriend was just as relaxing.

I figure I might as well ask for the winter event. Congrats on 200 btw !! I love your writing so much <3 Could you do Miyuki with the holiday prompts 11 and 39 please :)
Hmmmm Kazuya🥰
Thank you for the kind words, love! You guys really make my days special 🥺
Prompts
#11 - "I'm so lonely over here. If only someone would come join me in this nonsuspicious doorway that definitely doesn't have mistletoe over it."
#39 - "I don't see the problem here, I think the sweaters adorable!" "I hate you"
One moody Miyuki
----------------------------------------------------------
"I'm so lonely over here. If only someone would come join me in this nonsuspicious doorway that definitely doesn't have mistletoe over it."
You leaned against the doorframe in the living room and brought your hand to your forehead adding to your desperate pleas for love and affection. Your eyes were glued onto Miyuki's figure waiting for any hint of a response.
Not even a glance or snarky comment...talk about a moody Tanuki.
You walked over to the catcher —his attention was on an article written about an old teammate— and laid your head on his lap. Miyuki's attention never left his phone, the only sign he acknowledged you was when he lifted his arms so you could lay across his lap.
You huffed, he was really being stubborn about this. In a last attempt, you poked at his cheeks, squishing his face together with your hands. Anything would do at this point, a smile, a laugh, an annoyed glance, hell -you'd even take one of his quips if it meant he'd stop ignoring you.
"Kazuyaaa, I love yooou~"
Still nothing.
Kazuya's stubbornness never ceased to amaze you but really, all this over a sweater?! You didn't even think the sweater was that bad and it's not like you were expecting him to wear it in public.
You removed your hands from his face with a huff. He could continue to ignore you but there was no way you'd sit up, you were too comfy using his legs as a pillow.
You must have fallen asleep because the next thing you knew you were woken up by the delicate feeling of someone's fingers tracing up and down your arm.
"Finally paying attention to me?"
Miyuki hummed and continued to trace shapes up your arm, his eyes looked warm as he silently watched you.
"The sweater isn't even that bad. Compared to your horrendous fashion sense it might even be an improvement"
Miyuki's hand stopped.
"Can we please stop talking about it?" He groaned, the hands that had previously been tracing your arm grabbed onto your waist and pulled you up so you were sitting on his lap.
"I don't see the problem here, I think the sweaters adorable!"
"I hate you."
But there was no bite to his words, he just pulled you closer to him trapping you in a tight embrace. You leaned in towards his face, bumping your noses together before you pressed a gentle kiss to the corner of his mouth.
"Yeah sure, whatever you say, Kazuya"

✨ Miyuki Week Countdown: Day 1 ✨
November 17th is National Miyuki Kazuya Day!
The 5-day countdown is over!
Tumblr media
✨ Day 1 ✨
Why is he your favorite character?
In the simplest of terms, Miyuki is my comfort character. He is one of the few characters, regardless of anime or manga - who brings me inexplicable joy at any point. If I see any screenshot, manga cap, fan art, video clip of Miyuki - I just... LOSE MY MIND.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really don't even have the words to describe it, but it's something similar to the moment you reunite with your best friend after a long time, or receiving a comforting hug from a loved one.
My chest gets warm, and I'm just tingly and excited every time I see him do.. ANYTHING.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miyuki is my favorite character because he embodies all the best traits that I wish I had - confidence, dedication and strength. He has a genius mind and a considerate heart, even when he pretends like he doesn't. His character only gets better and better with every episode and every chapter. I literally LIVE for his smile, his laugh (thank you Takahiro Sakurai), his eyes, his athletic abilities, his teasing mannerisms, his power as a captain... 💗
Tumblr media
We all know that Miyuki is Terajima's favorite - and for good reason.
Miyuki is perfect, and I could never believe anything different.
🎉⚾ HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIYUKI! ⚾🎉

Gift for Daiyanerd: Miyuki Kazuya. Always cool and collected. Has a great side profile. Good at baseball. Well, no, great is the correct word. (sofa’21)
Moratorium
Read on Ao3
ONE
Miyuki Kazuya
Always cool and collected. Has a great side profile. Good at baseball. Well, no, great is the correct word. Even when he sometimes messes up some of the smaller plays. Reliable. Daring. Funny. Charming. Has probably had a dozen girlfriends, or maybe not. Nobody has been able to get any concrete answer on that one question, but he's definitely a lady's man, his fan club primarily consisting of girls and women that claim they would leave their current lives just to marry him if he so much as hinted interest. Or at least that's what many of the magazines, both sports and gossip ones say about him
Not to be too full of himself, but Kazuya thinks that much of what they say has some foundation. Yeah, people like Yoichi and Jun know better but he has to agree that his catching skills are unparalleled. He might also really like sending magazine covers with blown up images of his smiling (smirking) face to Yoichi just to get a scathing reply or an angry call. His only response is his lady killer (annoying) laugh
He knows he's always being watched by someone, but it completely slips his mind that anything could go wrong on that day
The headlines are brutal and he's gotten many messages and calls from his friends. He hasn't really answered because, well, he hasn't been able to. But he knows what they're saying. He's laying at the hospital with bandages covering most of his torso. He has a sense of deja vu, having been in a similar position when he'd been in high school, but this is much, much worse. Something happened and everyone is scrambling to find out what
Everyone except Rei, who has been detained. The tabloids are lapping this up like it's the sip of water they've finally been allowed after being stuck in a desert for months. Except that they're ruining the lives of the people Kazuya loves the most
He sees different news channels trying to get interviews from the few people that make up his friends. They want to know about Rei from high school. They've dug up her whole life's story and put it on full blast. They want to know about Kazuya, as if they haven't already told all there is to say, invented and created his whole career. They talk about how Rei pretty much scouted him from a very young age. The same women that claim they would do anything for Kazuya have turned razer sharp, claiming that "they knew it all along" and that Rei "had it coming"
They all twist the information for entertainment and Kazuya closes his eyes, disgusted at what they say about her.
There had been an accident. His car had been hit and he knows he needed surgery. Later they found out it was all a setup and he went from being one of the richest people and baseball players in Japan to having nothing. His career may as well be over. It will take too long for him to recover. Games won't wait.
Kazuya throws the remote in his hand and wants to tell them all its lies. He knows Rei would never do something like this. She's smart. It doesn't make sense. As much as Rei will follow a gut instinct, especially if it's about recruiting potential, it's always based on logic. There is no logic here.
His name flashes on multiple headlines and all he wants to scream is no, I didn't she say she stole my money!
The machines connected to his body have been beeping for a while now and finally, nurses and doctors run in. They try to get him to calm down but all he can do is repeat It wasn't her! It wasn't her! Rei would never! Tell them to stop!
Soon he feels drowsy and he realizes he's been sedated.
Before he closes his eyes he sees a picture of Rei next to the news anchor. Her hair is down, her eyes look haunted, but her posture is proud. She's not in her usual suit. Instead, she's wearing that dreaded green top, almost drowning her, making her pale skin paler. She doesn't look right. It's not the Rei he knows. The Rei he owes everything to.
He feels the tears burn his eyes.
----
TWO.
It takes a little over a year for things to "settle" down, but once the storm is over, everything is ruined.
Kazuya still manages to get his face blown up on magazine covers, but this time it's for a different reason. He's now considered a victim and he hates the images of him being wheeled out of the hospital. Of the tabloids somehow getting a shot of his bloodshot eyes, his pale skin, and his hunched shoulders. He wishes his attorney had allowed Kazuya to do something, but everything was too precarious, we have to be careful. Careful of what? He can no longer play baseball. He was already pushing the age of acceptability, only being allowed to continue contracts because he was so good, was still quick, was dedicated in mind, body, and soul to the game. But now he was injured, would be in rehab, and nobody knew if he'd still be able to move as great as before. Nobody would take that risk
Rei is finally released, but her life is ruined too. Hers is worse than Kazuya's will ever be. Not just because she's the supposed mastermind of the accident and subsequent disappearance of his capital, but because she's a woman. It's made him sick how she's been torn apart and left behind. She had already been forcefully (through great results) making her own space at the table. This was just the excuse to make her disappear. Nobody wanted a criminal as their associate. The label was tarnished and it would take time to rebuild their name. "Apologies" had been passed around, but nobody would take the risk of allowing her space again
Nobody thought to ask her side of the story, to reach out and help. She was alone. Nobody could legally take what she's rightfully earned, but they can pile fines upon fines. She is "free to go" but they have severely limited what she can do.
It only makes sense that she finally retires. Kazuya goes to see her with the Seidou team. He breaks when he finally sees what they've done to her, all in "his name", to "protect him". Rei is strong, logical, smart, but she can't help but allow herself to show a bit of emotion at that moment. She wipes away at Kazuya's face, "There's nothing left for me here and there's no use crying. The only way to go now is forward."
Chris recommends that Kazuya go to the same rehab facility he went to in America.
Kazuya doesn't want to leave. It feels like admitting defeat, like running away, like he's abandoning his friends.
Yoichi grits his teeth, tells Kazuya he wants to punch him for being so stupid, "But hitting an injured person isn't my style, even though it's YOU."
There is little progress on his health, both physical and mental, and then Yoichi, who has been singlehandedly taking care of him whenever he has a moment to spare, nearly begs him, "Kazuya, please. Go. Don't let this defeat you. I don't want to admit it but I miss seeing that stupidly smug look on your face. Remember what Rei said. You have to keep moving forward!"
He can't help but laugh one night when he can't sleep, Yoichi's words and his concerned face plaguing his mind. He can't believe he almost let this defeat him. He can't believe he was down enough to force his best friend to make such a face, to make him cry for his sake. He feels like he's let everyone down, especially Rei.
He calls Chris a few days later.
Before leaving, he logs into his Twitter account, which, like any other media source, he's been avoiding for the past year. Someone has obviously logged in and cleared his notifications and as his last stand, no first, because even now "they have to be careful", Kazuya quote RTs an article he hasn't even read, but he doesn't need to. He chooses it because it has one of those headlines. He presses send and logs out.
I NEVER said she stole my money.
----
THREE.
It's two years when he finally comes back to Japan. His rehab had ended months ago but there was a part of him that had been afraid to come back. He's sure Yoichi had sensed it, which is why he'd pretty much dragged him back.
He remembers the conversation they had. It had been really late in Japan, he's sure that Yoichi was on the verge of passing out, could hear every yawn he tried to hide, but he wouldn't let Kazuya hang up, "I'm not hanging up until you agree."
Kazuya sighs, "There's nothing for me to do out there anyway. Here, I've been helping at the hospital."
"But you don't even like that kind of stuff! I bet you're bored out of your mind," Yoichi countered, and Kazuya has to admit that he's not exactly wrong. He misses the excitement from the diamond, feeling the burn on his thighs as he squats behind the batter, signaling different plays to his catchers, the feel of the ball as it lands perfectly in his gloved palm, the roar of the crowd as they once more strikeout another enemy batter. But he can't have any of that. This year Kazuya turns 30 and he has become stiff. He can't move as dexterously as before.
He hears some shuffling on the other end, as if Yoichi is changing positions on his bed, "Look. Not many people know this but...this is actually my last year playing."
Kazuya freezes at that. He knows Yoichi is still keeping up with his own records, has won his team countless matches for his boldness, knows they would never want to let him go. He briefly fears that maybe an injury is involved but shakes his head. No, Yoichi would tell him if that's the case, so then, "Why?"
"That's why I called and I need you to come back," there's another pause, not long, "I'm getting married."
Kazuya blanks out for a moment and then stops what he's doing altogether (he turns off the stove, he'd been making breakfast but this is more important. Besides, he had almost been done), "Married? Did you kidnap some poor girl? I haven't even heard of you dating."
"KAZUYA," he hears Yoichi yell, "I didn't kidnap anyone! And that's because my PR team has been making sure to keep things tightly sealed, and I guess we also haven't been able to see each other much too." That last part is mumbled but Kazuya catches it anyway.
Kazuya hums, still disbelieving, but only slightly. He knows Yoichi wouldn't kid about something like this so if he says he's getting married, he's getting married, "Congratulations then. Not sure how someone found you husband material, but they do say there's a type for everyone. How'd you meet her?"
"You are such a dick," Yoichi hisses, "How are we still even friends?"
Kazuya sometimes wonders the same thing. Yoichi has been with him at his best and worst and has never given up on him. He laughs, "My great personality?"
Yoichi snorts right before laughing, "Yeah right. Anyway, so I met this guy-"
"A husband?" Kazuya cuts him off, genuinely curious, but also can't help but tease, "You hid it so well with all those magazines. I'm sure nobody suspected. No wonder your team is doing such a great job at hiding this."
Yoichi yells into the phone, "Let me finish asshole! No! It's not a guy, her name is Wakana! And she's the childhood friend of this guy I met!"
Kazuya makes a tsk noise, "Yoichi, did you steal her from this guy? Are you a homewrecker?"
Instead of getting mad, Yoichi snorts, "As if. Can you believe Wakana was actually in love with Sawamoron for years and he didn't realize."
Kazuya adds, "So you seduced her?" before Yoichi can continue with the story.
"No? I mean, I'm not sure," but they both know that Yoichi probably couldn't seduce anyone even if he tried. Charmed, yes, but outright seduce? And a girl he liked? Very unlikely, "But she'd been tired of waiting and so I met her after she'd confessed and he rejected her."
"Hmm," Kazuya interrupts again, "So you took advantage when she was down. That makes more sense. She was probably so down about being rejected she would have said yes to anyone. Sadly that someone was you."
Yoichi is flabbergasted, "Take advantage?! MIYUKI, that's not- I'd never - just let me finish!"
Kazuya laughs, "Ok, ok. So how did you meet her? I won't interrupt again."
Just like that, Yoichi calms down and Kazuya notes the happiness in his voice as he laughs, not at Kazuya, but at something, the memory perhaps, and Kazuya is slightly jealous. He's not sure at what or who.
"So this kid, Sawamura, we were going to meet up at the park. He had something to tell me, but then I see him running after this girl, yelling about money or something. So I cut her off-"
Kazuya can't help but laugh, "Y-Yoichi, did you, did you attack the poor girl?"
"Didn't you say you weren't going to interrupt?!" Yoichi screeches, but he starts laughing a bit too, "And no, I didn't attack her but, well..."
There's a groan on the other end and Kazuya can imagine his best friend blushing to the tips of his ears, "I pulled her by the arm and she was surprised, but then she did something and next thing I know I'm on the ground, looking up at her and Sawamura is laughing like he's seen the most hilarious thing ever!"
He wonders if that kid was laughing as hard as he is now. He feels the tears tickling his eyes, his cheeks hurt, and he feels the force of his laugh pulling on his stomach, "I already like the girl. What happened next?"
Yoichi lets him laugh but his voice is annoyed, not at him he notes, but at what happens next, "So Sawamoron comes up finally and he knows the girl and I'm confused and just got thrown to the ground by a girl that doesn't even reach my chin, and I ask him why he was yelling about a thief, because that's what he was doing."
More shifting on Yoichi's end, "And you know what he said to me?"
"What?"
"He goes "I never said she stole my money!" so I knock him over the head because yeah, he's right, he was YELLING IT. Everyone in the goddamn park heard it! Made him buy me dinner and everything."
Kazuya feels a lump in his throat but pushes it aside, he turns the stove on again to finish preparing his breakfast, "I guess for Wakana I can go back. When's the wedding? And will I be your best man?"
----
FOUR.
Kazuya hasn't even been home a month when Yoichi walks into his apartment with their old Seidou team. Everyone seems to be there, even the first years like Ryo's little brother and Furuya. There really isn't anything Kazuya can do but move aside so that everyone can come inside. At the end of the group, right after the first years enter, he spots someone he doesn't know. A kid with unruly brown hair, brown eyes, and tanned skin who looks slightly nervous. His posture is too stiff but he's also looking around curiously.
Yoichi notices Kazuya looking at him and comes over for introductions. He pulls the kid into a side hug, "Kazuya, this is Sawamura, Wakana's friend."
Kazuya looks him over. He's heard a few things about him from Yoichi, "So this is Sawamoron?" he teases. He can't help the lift of his lips as the kid splutters in indignation.
A high pitched, "Kuramochi-senpai! You can't call me that anymore, we're practically family now!"
Yoichi howls, slapping the kid on the back, "You're always going to be a moron Sawamura, hyahaha!"
Sawamura grits his teeth for a second before standing up straight, stretching out his hand towards Kazuya, "Good afternoon, It's a pleasure to meet you! My name is Sawamura Eijun! Thank you for inviting me!!"
Kazuya looks at the outstretched hand for a moment before he doubles over laughing. Sawamura let's out another unidentified sound before yelling, "That's so rude Miyuki Kazuya!!" but he hasn't dropped his arm.
Kazuya takes a breath, isn't surprised he knows his name (briefly wonders if he knows who he is), right before taking that tanned hand into his own. Sawamura's hold is firm, if a bit sweaty, nerves probably, "Well, as you so clearly let my neighbors know, my name is Miyuki Kazuya." He pauses, "And I didn't invite you."
Sawamura pales slightly, looks over to Yoichi who just makes a rude noise, "Really Kazuya? You have to be a dick right off the bat?"
Kazuya only smiles brightly, finally letting go of the kid's hand, looks around his house, and says, "Actually, I didn't invite any of you over. Why are you all here?"
The others have already settled into his kitchen and, he peers through the doorway, there are bottles of coke and beer and the smell of oily pizza in the air. Jun has already made himself at home on his couch, a paper plate with a pizza on it. He's halfway into that slice and Kazuya doesn't know why Jun didn't just take an extra slice or two with him before settling down. Ryo and Haruichi are putting things in his fridge. He realizes now how empty his fridge must have been. He had been meaning to go grocery shopping but he supposes he hadn't had the energy to go. Kanemaru is clearing up some of the boxes he had yet to unbox, reading the labels Chris had helped him write, and arranging them accordingly.
He knows that many of these guys are still part of the leagues, wonders how they managed to take a moment to raid his home (notices a few faces are missing, like Yuki but he would have been REALLY surprised if they'd managed to get him to come over). He remembers how they'd made it a routine to visit him when they were at Seidou, knowing he could get lost in strategizing and numbers quickly. He feels a penetrating gaze and turns to see the new kid watching him intently. Kazuya can't help the grin that grows on his face and it's finally starting to feel like home.
He motions the two in, "Well, you may as well come in. Everyone is already inside. Feel free to raid my fridge and make a mess in my new kitchen."
Yoichi laughs, pulling Sawamura inside with him. The kid still looks slightly off-balance, but he sits next to the first years like he belongs and he wonders why this picture looks so right.
Yoichi dives in for the last slice of pepperoni pizza just as Sawamura is about to reach for it and then loudly exclaims, "Hey Kazuya, wanna hear something funny?"
Kazuya has already grabbed his own plate and he wonders how he missed all of these pizza boxes when they first came inside. He grabs one with sausage and mushroom, "Hm?"
"So while we were getting the pizza, we sent Sawamura to go get the drinks, right?"
Sawamura, who had just taken a drink from his can of soda, instantly spits it out and Kazuya is both intrigued and disgusted as he sees the drink mixed with spit cover his table, "Kuramochi-senpai, don't!"
He sees Kanemaru chuckling and Jun roars from the living room. Apparently, there were many witnesses to this apparently funny story. Haruichi pats Sawamura's back softly while the kid's face glows red. Kazuya is momentarily worried he might faint but then curiosity wins out, "Oh?"
Yoichi and he share a look, "Get this, we all gave him our share, right? So he goes in and comes back all mad, saying we didn't give him the right amount, but then, but then," It seems the rest of it is too funny for Yoichi to continue because he starts laughing and he notices Sawamura cover his face. He mumbles something but Kazuya doesn't catch it.
Ryo helps him out. He's also amused, a smirk on his face, "The girl stole his change."
Sawamura uncovers his face and yells, "I never said she stole my money!"
There's a moment of silence before...
Jun. He'd come back into the kitchen to get more pizza, "Who else could it have been? Had to be the girl at the counter, or did you just give up your money?"
Kuramochi, "Easy prey, how you're even a teacher is beyond me."
Kanemaru, "Wait. So it wasn't the cashier?"
Even Kazuya can't help but ask, laughter tickling his words, "Emphasis on "she"?"
Sawamura seems to realize his error and covers his face again. He's mumbling again but instead of being annoyed by the bad habit, Kazuya thinks it's almost cute.
"Haruichi?" Ryo questions and Sawamura uncovers his face to yell, "Onii-san! That's not fair! Haruichi you can't tell, you promised!"
Haruichi is looking back and forth between them, "Well..."
Then Furuya explains all, "He was flirting with the delivery guy."
It somehow gets even louder inside his house and Kazuya can't believe he thought of not returning. It's true that his baseball career is over, but this is where his family is at. This is where his life is truly at. He laughs until the tears in his eyes fall.
They spend hours getting him up to speed on gossip.
----
FIVE.
Even though he's only known Sawamura for a few days, maybe weeks, he's the one that keeps Kazuya company the most. And there's a big reason for that named Kuramochi Yoichi. Even though, or perhaps because, it's nearing the end of his contract, Yoichi gets busier. There are some rumors as to why he's finally leaving baseball, but just like he'd told Kazuya, everything is still under wraps. There are no incriminating photos and no face to put to those rumors jealous girls spread online. Kazuya wonders how things will turn out once Yoichi fesses up but until then, Sawamura becomes his shadow
One, he's not bound to such a strenuous schedule (Yoichi told him Sawamura is the grade school teacher at one of the local schools not far from Kazuya's new place. His new house is conveniently placed so close because it will soon be Kazuya's new workplace and they just happen to be on break now), and second...well, Kazuya's not sure. Yoichi didn't want to tell him. Not exactly
He remembers the last time he actually met up with his best friend.
Yoichi had invited him over for dinner and Sawamura had come up somehow (Kazuya comes to realize that Sawamura comes up in their lives very often). Yoichi had been contemplative. They'd just finished watching a movie and were just sitting there in the dark, the credits rolling.
"You know. If Sawamura had actually been interested in Wakana...I don't think I'd have ever had a chance with her. There's just something about him...he's so..." Yoichi makes vague hand movements, "you know?"
Kazuya laughs and wonders if this is what best men have to deal with with their to-be grooms. Jitters, he's heard them called, but he was sure this feeling was supposed to happen days before the wedding, not so far ahead when there wasn't even a date finalized, "Already second-guessing the married life?"
Yoichi doesn't even take the bait. He just sighs and leans back on the couch, "No, I'm serious. There's just something about Sawamura, he's so honest and hardworking. I can see why Wakana liked him."
"Careful, or I might start to think you actually want to marry Sawamura instead."
Yoichi kicks him halfheartedly, "Dumbass."
Their feet are still touching and Yoichi nudges him, "He's a good kid you know."
Kazuya leans out to grab his drink from the low table, takes a sip, "He does seem like it. Although he's a bit..." He tries to find the right word. Dense? Airheaded? No..."innocent?"
Yoichi laughs, "Yes! The stories I could tell you."
It gets quiet and Kazuya enjoys it. It's been years since the two of them have done something like this.
Yoichi breaks the silence again, "You know...Rei actually tried scouting him."
Kazuya takes another swig of his drink, deep, and tries to wash away the feelings of guilt. He hasn't spoken to Rei since the incident. Hasn't really asked about her although he knows she's ok, thanks to Chris
But he's curious now. If Rei had been interested in him then he was undoubtedly good talent, "What happened?"
Yoichi scoffs, "The idiot turned her down! Said he didn't need any fancy schools to play baseball."
Kazuya can't help the snort he lets out into his drink. He hasn't known Sawamura long but he can somehow imagine the face he'd make, how loud he would yell that statement with conviction, "Too bad." He's sure Sawamura could have been someone if he'd come to Seidou and he somehow feels cheated of something
"What position?"
"Pitcher, a southpaw, nasty throw," Yoichi grips his cup tightly. He looks over at him, "He's not a professional but he does still play."
It's a subtle nudge that Kazuya ignores.
Which is probably why he finds Sawamura so often on his doorstep.
Today he's managed to wrangle Kazuya out of his house, but only because it's work-related. The summer heat isn't terrible today so the two decide to walk and even though it's not that far, Kazuya finds himself lightly perspiring. Perhaps he's let himself go more than he thought, and he begins planning a timetable to get his fitness in a better state. Meanwhile, Sawamura is all smiles
"Hurry up Miyuki Kazuya!" He's already at the side door, opening it with his staff key, and Kazuya wonders if they should even be here. There are hardly any cars parked outside and the school is obviously void of children. Classes don't start until next week
"You don't have to call me by my full name," Kazuya tells him as he enters the building. Sawamura slides past him after closing the door, making sure it locks properly, "You can call me Miyuki-senpai."
"What?!" Sawamura's voice echoes in the hallway, "Why should I call you that?!"
"Because you're younger," he pats Sawamura's head and grins, "And smaller."
He slaps his hand away, a blush on his face, "I'm not small! And you're not even that much taller!!"
He stands closer to Kazuya and points at the few centimeters difference between them. Kazuya pushes him back, "Miyuki-senpai."
Sawamura just rolls his eyes and continues walking, "You really do have a terrible personality Miyuki Kazuya!"
Kazuya just laughs, "Thanks!"
"Not a compliment!" Sawamura yells and then points to the rooms in the hall they're in, "I'm usually here with the kids. Since the school isn't that big you'll probably get kids as young as eight and as old as thirteen in your class too, since you're the only gym teacher until Kuramochi-senpai gets married."
Kazuya nods, "Ok, Sawamura...sensei."
Kazuya notes how easy it is to rile up Sawamura. How his face will quickly turn red and his lips will form pouts or grimaces, his body reacting so honestly so quickly. Now he brings up his hands to cover his ears as he yells, "Don't call me that!!"
"Then stop calling me by my full name, it's weird."
"MIYUKI KA-"
Kazuya somehow manages to raise his voice enough to speak over Sawamura, "So Sawamura-sensei, where do the kids go out to play? Sensei?"
Sawamura looks like he's about to burst and goes off yelling. Miyuki follows him, laughing, their voices echoing in tandem
They end up outside behind the school somewhere. Even though it's small, Kazuya is impressed by how well maintained it is. There is a small playground to the side, which has been recently repainted, signs marking the walls and tape clearly discouraging anyone from touching. The mats at the bottom look worn but not in bad shape. Then there is a track that circles what looks like enough field to be a neighborhood. Most of it is empty and Sawamura's talking about how sometimes the kids will go out there and play soccer or volleyball or really whatever sports they need that requires a lot of space. The only place that looks like it truly has a defined purpose is the baseball field.
He feels excited and scared at the same time, wants to run to home plate, to feel the dirt path against his feet, crouch, and take in the view. But he also thinks this is a bad idea. Maybe he shouldn't have come here, shouldn't have accepted the job. He knows why they want him, why they're willing to wait a year for Yoichi to come and teach. He's not sure if he can take the pressure
"Miyuki-senpai," he turns to Sawamura, who is pouting.
He's not sure why he feels himself calm down, perhaps it's because he'll take any distraction, even if it's loud Sawamura, or maybe it's because Sawamura looks ridiculous with his cheeks puffed out and his eyebrows scrunched up between his eyes. Kazuya smiles. It hurts a bit to do so, "Is this all just for the little gremlins? Lucky them, I didn't have something so big at my disposal when I was at school."
Sawamura suddenly inflates as he grins, "Yeah me neither! I'm from the countryside from a school even smaller than this! Wakana and I had to go to the other side of town with our friends if we wanted to play baseball. That's sort of what it's like here too. We share with some of the other schools and really anyone is welcome to come here as long as the kids aren't out playing."
"Wakana, huh," Kazuya notes. He hasn't actually met the bride-to-be yet, "Is she in the habit of taking people's money?"
Sawamura looks confused and perhaps a bit upset, "What?"
Kazuya only smirks, "I heard how Yoichi met her."
Understanding fills his eyes and he groans, "I keep telling Kuramochi-senpai not to tell that story! It's all lies! Lies! Come on, let's go to the gym, your to-be base."
They head back inside and Kazuya feels the smile that spreads on his face is lighter, amused. It's relaxing being with Sawamura, "So what, she wasn't stealing your money?"
"No!" Sawamura defends, "I never said she stole my money! It was all a misunderstanding!!"
"So what? She was just borrowing it?" Kazuya pushes and can't help but laugh as Sawamura goes red.
"I-It, my, NO! She just grabbed my wallet!! But she wasn't stealing it!"
----
SIX.
Kazuya hasn't been teaching for long when it's time to prepare for Sports Day and he forgets how tiring it can be. Sawamura is ecstatic the whole week leading up to the moment all the kids are let loose to run and play, and he's not sure how the flow of energy works, who feeds off who, but everyone seems to be ready to burst with enthusiasm by then. Kazuya feels like he's the only one who is burnt out. He's not usually used to so much happening, at least not like this
The school asks him to give an encouraging speech before the event begins, which Sawamura jealously admits had been his job the last two years, but he grins all the same. He encourages him to do his best, just like he does to the children and Kazuya isn't sure if he should be offended or glad when he feels the flat of Sawamura's palm on his back.
By then, Yoichi has finally wrapped things up with his team. He still has a few more interviews scheduled, but he's essentially removed himself (as much as he can) from the public eye. He's announced he's going to get married and has been asked many times about his to-be wife, but just like Kazuya, everyone is kept in the dark. On the few nights Yoichi manages to call him, to check up on him, Kazuya teases that maybe this is the most elaborate plan he's ever seen, that maybe this Wakana girl doesn't even exist
Yoichi just laughs, "What? Is The Great Miyuki Kazuya actually curious?"
Kazuya scoffs, "Of course not, and don't call me that. I can't get Sawamura to stop, I don't want you doing the same. It's so weird."
They talk until they're both ready to pass out but Yoichi tells him he'll be there and that he'll bring Wakana too. There's something strange with the way he says this but it's late, they've both been up for too long, and Kazuya doesn't remember the unease the next day
He doesn't remember until Sports Day, right before it happens.
It's usually a big event with parents and friends and the neighborhood coming by to see all their children perform at their best. This school is slightly different because of its size. It isn't just their kids (as Sawamura likes to say and Kazuya, reluctantly, has started to call his students), but a few students from two or three of the neighboring smaller schools. He's never seen the field so packed with kids. There are also a lot of cameras and flashing and suddenly Kazuya feels uncomfortably warm. This year it's not only locals that are here. He can see various news channels documenting the event and there are probably other labels walking around, trying to figure out what the next scoop will be. Or perhaps they've already been hinting at it but Kazuya has been avoiding all the gossip. He briefly wonders if they're here for him and while this might be slightly true, he's sure they're more likely to be here to catch a glimpse of Yoichi and Wakana
He decides to stick with Sawamura for most of the day.
Sawamura seems to be oblivious to all the attention, focusing on the kids, high-fiving everyone who is going to race, yelling encouragements as they pass him by, and yelling out happily as the kids make the baskets and reach the finish lines. Kazuya tries to show his support as well and Sawamura drags him from one event to the next. The parents love him as much as the children do. He briefly wonders if Sawamura will have any voice left for the next day
It's around the time the kids finally get their break for lunch (and that Sawamura pulls him over to an empty patch of grass so that they can finally rest as well, how Kazuya was able to crouch for hours on end before is almost a mystery to him now, he really HAS let himself go) that he starts to hear them
"I didn't say she stole MY money. Did you really not know?" "Is she REALLY here? "The NERVE of her." "We should tell the principal to kick her out. Where is she?"
Everything starts to go quiet as Kazuya looks around. There are too many people around, but he manages to find her by the fence behind the diamond. She's looking right at him and Kazuya feels himself stop breathing for a moment. He isn't sure what he was expecting but she looks exactly like she did three years ago, except somehow better. Her hair is up in her typical bun, she's wearing a pink button-up with her trademark pencil skirt. There's a small coat hanging off her arm, which is the only sign he has that she plans to stay for the whole of the day's events.
He gets up, ignores Sawamura's confused, "Miyuki-senpai?" and goes to meet her.
He remembers how Yoichi had sounded over the phone the other day and realizes that when he said her, he hadn't meant Wakana, he had meant Rei. She's smiling at him and once they're close enough, she says, "Miyuki Kazuya, it's been a long time, hasn't it?"
"Rei," he all but whispers and he notices people are looking, the cameras are pointing in their direction and he smiles. He's so happy and relieved to see her. He wonders why he hadn't tried contacting her before, where the guilt and fear have gone. He thanks Yoichi, will thank him later as well, for always doing things like this for him, I'm the worst friend, aren't I? He can already see Yoichi's annoyed face as he threatens to punch him if he says anything so stupid again. He laughs, "It's been way too long. I'm sorry."
He finally has the chance to really apologize for everything, to offer his support, to ask how she's been doing, and he marvels at how Seidou is truly a family. His old teammates haven't just been trying to get him to move forward, they have also been helping Rei regain a semblance of her old life.
When they part, it turns into a game. They both know how things will go so they are bold, they grin, and take each other's hands in a firm shake.
"I'm sure I'll be seeing you on the field in the future." It's not a question.
"Of course." It's a promise.
At the end of the day, Sawamura and he are the last to leave the school since Sawamura offered to stay and clean up (and with him Kazuya). The sun is already on the verge of setting and Kazuya can't wait to take a bath and then crawl into bed. He doesn't want to wake up until a week from now.
As they're walking home (or really walking to his house because even now, he's never really asked where Sawamura lives, he imagines not far), Kazuya notices how quiet Sawamura is. He bumps his side with his shoulder, "Lost your voice with all that yelling?"
Sawamura looks over at him and shakes his head. Kazuya is momentarily mesmerized by this side of Sawamura. Quiet, almost shy. He's not pouting or angry, his features calm, slightly sharp on his handsome face. The remaining rays of the sun make his eyes look slightly gold and Kazuya wonders why he's suddenly noticing these things, "What's wrong then?"
The temperature had dropped enough that they were now comfortably wearing jerseys. Sawamura mumbles into the collar of his jersey and Kazuya is annoyed, but only slightly. It's that bad habit of Sawamura's and he wonders if he could tease those mumbled words out of him, is about to do that when Sawamura stops walking, closes his eyes, and yells out, "Do you like Miss Rei?!"
Kazuya is left speechless. At least that answers his other teasing question. Sawamura is as loud as always, "What?"
Sawamura opens his eyes, he's blushing and he can't seem to look him in the eye, "Well, there were those rumors...and then today...I mean, she's really pretty and just..." He goes quiet.
There's a lot here he wants to clear up, but he figures he should start with Sawamura's question, "No. At least, not really."
There's a question in those golden-brown eyes and Kazuya continues to explain, "I'm sure everyone on the baseball team liked her at one point. We were all teenagers and she's a really attractive woman, but that's it. Rei...she scouted me, believed that I could go far, pushed me, pretty much built my whole career. She's not really like my mom, not really an older sister...but yeah, like family."
They're both surprised by how honest he's been, which leads him to his own question, "Rumors? So you knew who I was. Is that why you called me by my full name?"
Sawamura looks embarrassed, "Yeah. I, I was curious about Seidou. I bet Kuramochi-senpai already told you about Rei and her coming to scout me?"
Kazuya nods.
They start walking again, "Well, I started seeing your name come up a lot. I always had trouble with my own catchers, I wasn't very good, sometimes my throws would go wild. I guess. I mean, they felt right, but Wakana, she was my main catcher, it was hard for her to catch them. Anyway, I started following your career. And just, well, then that happened and the rumors..."
They're quiet for a moment. Kazuya thinking back to how Yoichi had called Sawamura's pitch a nasty throw, the way Rei had pointed out Sawamura's staring while they talked and how Kazuya should catch for him, "When I saw him pitch, I knew you two would make a great battery. I knew you would be what could push him to greater heights, and that he would influence you too. All of Seidou. He has the heart of an Ace."
He's curious.
"Do you regret it?"
It's been a few minutes but Sawamura follows his question, turns to him, conviction in his burning eyes, "Never!"
----
SEVEN.
Kazuya finally gets to meet Wakana on his birthday. Yoichi tells him they're going out to celebrate at a fancy restaurant and he's not allowed to say no. Since he is the best man at their future wedding, he supposes it would be rude to not meet the bride-to-be so he pulls out one of his old suits, is relieved it still fits, and decides that's enough effort needed on his part. He also decides to forgo the tie and leaves the first two buttons undone. It's classy.
He's not surprised to see Sawamura also at the restaurant, and he's also not surprised to see him sporting a loud outfit. He's also wearing a suit but his shirt is a bright blue with baseball patterns, he's pulled up the suit jacket sleeves to his elbows (which, might he add, does not match his pants, but it somehow works), and he's actually wearing a tie. There's a girl trying to tame his hair but she soon gives up when Sawamura spots him and calls out, "Miyuki Kazu-mmyaa."
"Eijun!" the girl chides him, "We told you to be quiet!"
She's covering his mouth and let's go once he settles down. He rubs his hand through the back of his hair, ruining whatever work the girl must have done, "Sorry."
The girl shakes her head and turns to him, "So you're the famous Miyuki Kazuya, in the flesh."
Kazuya smiles, "And you must be the infamous money stealing Wakana."
They shake hands and Wakana laughs, "The one and only."
Yoichi comes up behind him, "Good, you're here. I thought I was going to have to send someone to drag you out of bed."
They're escorted to the back where they can dine in private. Yoichi walks in the back with him and Kazuya watches the way Sawamura's body faces Wakana even when they're walking. The way she pushes and holds his arm, laughs at what he says. The way that Sawamura lets her choose where she wants to sit and then makes space so that the table decorations aren't in her way. He sits across from her.
Yoichi whispers at him, "See what I mean?"
Kazuya doesn't need to see them interact to know why Wakana once liked Sawamura, but it definitely solidifies their closeness.
Wakana is very pretty. She has short hair that is slightly tinged with red, natural, she mentions when she sees him looking at her, "I get asked a lot." Apparently, it's a color she inherited from her great grandmother
She's as small as Yoichi claimed her to be, which makes her look tiny with her current company. She's wearing a simple and modest blue dress that matches perfectly with the ties Sawamura and Yoichi are wearing. She's just as honest as Sawamura is, and Kazuya wonders if all the people in his life are like that. It's refreshing. He instantly likes her and knows that Yoichi will be happy. It makes him happy too.
They're waiting on their food when Sawamura tells Yoichi that "Miyuki Kazuya" called Wakana a thief. Yoichi puts down his glass of wine, sending his best friend a glare, "I should have known you wouldn't behave!"
Sawamura is quick to respond, "It's all your fault Kuramochi-senpai! You keep telling that stupid story!!"
"The only thing stupid about that story is YOU Bakamura!!"
They look like children snapping at each other across the table and Wakana is just laughing. She turns to Kazuya, "Did he tell you what actually happened?"
Kazuya nods, "Sort of. Something about borrowing a wallet."
Wakana smiles, "Something like that, yes."
"See! I told you I never said she stole my money!!" Sawamura gets up suddenly but nobody notices the waiter coming with trays until the sound of plates falling to the ground and shattering are heard. But the worst part is probably the cake that Sawamura tries to save. Part of it lands on his hands, some of it on the table, but a big portion of it (thanks to Sawamura's interference), is now all over Wakana's dress. Everyone holds their breath, the waiter looks horrified.
Kazuya knows he shouldn't but he snickers and that seems to bring everything back to life. Wakana laughs and tells the waiter it's ok, she pats his hand reassuringly, "But can we get another cake? We'll pay for both of course."
The man is so relieved, he smiles and nods, and says he'll be right back to clean up, that he can also ask someone to help her out. Sawamura looks constipated and ridiculous standing there with chunks of cake in his hands.
"This is so coming out of your wallet Sawamoron!!" Yoichi cries out as he grabs chunks of cake from Wakana's lap and throws it on the table, "And YOU, I can't believe you did that!"
Kazuya only smirks, looks over at Wakana, and says, "Welcome to the family."
It seems like Wakana isn't just depleting Sawamura's accounts, but also stealing hearts.
----
OMAKE (months later)
It's the wedding night when Sawamura decides to crash at Kazuya's house. They're both exhausted and since they're both going to the same place the next morning, Kazuya doesn't make a fuss. When they make it home, they fight about who will take a shower first and Kazuya wins because, ultimately, this is his house so of course he has dibs. Sawamura pouts as he heads to the living room, ok, ok, just go you evil tanuki bastard.
When Kazuya comes out in a white t-shirt and boxers, he finds Sawamura already passed out on the couch, his arm and leg fallen off the side. He notices that he at least had the sense to take off his suit jacket and shirt. He's only wearing his undershirt and his pants have risen up his shins. Everything else is thrown against the back of the couch and his keys, cellphone, camera, and wallet, are all on the table. He's snoring lightly, his breath coming out more like little sighs, and there's a bit of drool where gravity has decided to do its job.
He's about to wake up Sawamura when he remembers something Wakana told him the first time they met. Right before they left the restaurant, she had pulled him aside, telling the other two NOT to come closer, Next time you get the chance, look inside his wallet. I promise it'll be worth it, and don't worry, he won't mind. He yells a lot but that's all there is.
The wallet is right there and Kazuya wishes it had landed the other way. At least like that, it wouldn't feel like he was snooping. No, he wouldn't. He doesn't really understand why Wakana wants him to look inside, but it's not really any of his business. He shakes his head and walks towards the couch. Before he can even reach forward, Sawamura shifts and mumbles a sleepy, "Kazuya."
Kazuya freezes at the stupid smile on Sawamura's face. He feels his face heat up and he's not sure why. He briefly glances at the wallet again, then moves to shake Sawamura's shoulders.
It takes a moment, a testament to how tired Sawamura is, before his brown eyes open and he sleepily mumbles, "Miyuki Kazuya?"
Kazuya hesitates for a moment. He doesn't have extra bedding and he knows sleeping on the couch is uncomfortable. They were going to share the bed, just like he always does whenever Yoichi visits, but suddenly he wonders if maybe this isn't a good idea. He tells Sawamura it's his turn to shower and nearly drags him to the bathroom. He stands outside just to make sure he doesn't pass out inside and somehow Sawamura looks even more drowsy than before. His skin is red from the heat of the water and they head to the bedroom.
Sawamura is out before his head hits the pillow. Kazuya arranges him on the bed properly and covers him with the blanket.
He finds it hard to sleep, the sound of his name coming from Sawamura's sleepy lips echoing in his head.

A/N:
I scoured Reddit for some inspiration and found this interesting prompt: "I never said she stole my money has 7 different meanings based on which word is emphasized." I sort of followed the prompt? LOL
things to note: 1. I just googled "prisoner clothes in japan" and green outfits came up, hence why Rei is dressed in a "green top" 2. I don't actually know how legal proceedings go in japan, if it would take longer or less (but this is fanfic so let's not question it) 3. Again, I don't know how long rehabs take but I'm not aiming for accuracy 4. If it wasn't obvious, Sawamura wasn't in the original Seidou team in this fic (lol) 5. Sports day apparently apparently happens around October (and again, Idk much about it)
I don't think I've ever written anything "complete" for this fandom but I hope you all enjoyed, especially you daiyanerd ^^
p.s. This got out of hand omg it's so long and hardly anything happens i hope you guys don't mind Orz Also, I kind of want to write more for this, maybe Sawamura's side of some of the events, maybe just a continuation, idk....

Maybe When we're ready We will meet again - K. Azizian
Tumblr media
A few spoiler alerts Actually. Maybe none 😂
Tumblr media
You almost forgot when was the last time you set foot on a baseball stadium, it was awfully hot. But you have to admit it to yourself, you miss this.
You sat on your seat, one which was the first row of seat at the bottom, near the dugout and near the foul area, and are fully aware that you are exposed to flying foul balls. You knew that some players dive just to get the ball, even if it was flying on the audience seat, as long as they can reach it, which is they can, they will go for it.
They are Pros representing their country after all.
You came half an hour early, not because you want to grab a perfect spot to sit in but for you will have enough time to think if you're really doing this or not. After all this years you've been avoiding baseball at all cause because of him, after all this years you still don't have the guts to face him.
You stand up, ready to leave. Faced by the fact that you've got a large and heavy bag, you frown, adjusting the bag strap on your shoulder as you hold on into it. You get to recall what you put there before you leave, that is when you remember your older brother told you to bring your old baseball gloves.
The one you used to use in high school to play catch with him during your free time, then his cheeky grin flash into you, making you fall back into your seat in defeat. If there is one thing to convince yourself you've moved on from him, that would be watching this match, and you're doing this.
In the end, you left your bag in the seat, you knew and memorize it anyways, you've gone on this stadium many times during your high school as you watch him play his games, and it was as if your senses are still familiar with stadium, you don't even want to admit it to yourself.
You went out to get yourself some snack, you've also manage to spot some friends outside, some of them being your high school friends during your time at Seidou, it was fun meeting them but as soon as the game was about to start, you all headed back inside the stadium and go back to your seats. You can barely made it back to your seat since most of the people was already in there respective seats and yours was in the middle of the row.
"And now, entering the field is Japan Baseball Team"
You look up as you are currently trying to fish your gloves out of your bag.
There, you saw the guy you broke up with 6 years ago. He was still using his sports glasses though you could tell that he was still wearing his contacts. It was his thing whenever he was playing. His hair was always been the same, though it looked a little bit shorter now, it does look the same as has always been, it was still messy and windswept. As you can see, he was far taller than you last saw him, far more built that he was on his high school days.
You're say to say he is not the same guy you used to date during your high school days.
But he always looked hot wearing that catcher uniform.
But of course, you're not the only one who think of that, you look around you, watching some woman and girls cried out his name.
And you hate to admit that your heart ached every time you set your eyes on his figure, how he smile and waved at different direction once in a while during their warm up.
For the last time, your eyes landed on his figure.
They said that one of the best feeling was when you look at him, and he was already staring at you.
But all you ever did was to look away, your heart hammering painfully on your chest, you look at the mitt on your lap, for a moment, you wonder.
Why haven't you thrown his thing away?
You asked yourself, hoping to find an answer, but as you go deep in your thoughts, the more you don't wanna know.
You're fucked up, you knew that for the fact that you never stopped loving that guy the moment you saw him again, there is something T.V screen cannot give you, there is something your dreams cannot give you. It was just seeing him again in person gives you a different feelings whenever you saw him in the T.V or in your dreams. It was real, this is reality that you have to face. That he was standing there, in the field playing for his country. He was so close yet so far away, it has always been like that.
Another cheer coming from his fans snap you out of your rain of thoughts as you watch both team line up, bidding good game and good luck to each other.
You watch the game unfold around you, the way he perfectly caught the ball with his mitt, the way he throw the ball like an arrow, the way he call for the next throws, how well calculated he call for them, it must be fun having him as a catcher.
There he was, enjoying his life. Living his dreams like you expect him to be, as Professional Baseball Player you always want him to be. Somehow, you felt shame within yourself watching him, to think that that we was near yet out of reach. He was totally out of your reach now, no matter how hard you try, no matter how much you give, you knew, you will never be good enough for him. Not now, not yesterday, never in the past, never will you ever be worthy enough for him.
"Watch out!"
That put you on alert, making you blink to look at the guy who seems to be heading on your seat.
Why?
You look up in thought, eyes widening as you saw a ball slowly flying on your way.
Your eyes widen, suddenly aware that a foul ball was about to hit you, without thinking, your body move on its own, putting your gloves on, hands and arm on the position for a catch, the way Miyuki Kazuya used to teach you. You closed your eyes and waited for the impact.
 "And there she caught it!"
You open your eyes and gasp, the announcer was right.
"I caught it!"
You laugh to yourself, but then you stop when you realize.
Alexander Smith, the one of the most handsome baseball player you've known from your country's baseball team, you've only seen him a couple of teams in the T.V but somehow you found him very attractive, almost attractive as your megane ex. He was a brunette and has a deep brown eyes, and now that you come to think about it.
He does looks like your ex.
"Hi! Are you okay?"
Alexander, the right fielder ask you.
You blink and chuckle nervously
"Ye-yeah. sorry' bout that. I supposed you're supposed to catch these?"
You asked him, showing him your mitt that has the ball.
"Oh not really, I couldn't made it in time. Anyways, nice catch, you can have it"
He said, shooting you a cheeky grin before heading back to his position.
You blink, surprised by the sudden interaction.
Suddenly some people are looking on your way, making you embarrassed and flustered at the same time. But you put your attention back in the game, and as much to your surprise the Japan was leading a 1 run, but it is now your country turn to make some runs, at first it was a strike out, the second guy manage to make it into the 2nd base, it was until it was Alexander turn to bat, you seems pretty hyped at his turn.
At the same time, you are putting your mitt with the ball back into your back pack. Nothing seems wrong, until for the second time, someone shouted "Watch out" into you, making you look up. but it was too late for you already put your mitt back into your bag, "Move!" someone said, and you did as you are told, you move out of your seat, then seconds later. A man dive it, catching it into the processes.
"Woah!"
You said in a gasp as you over your mouth in shock.
"Now. That. Was. Cool!"
You claimed, helping the player get back on his feet.
"Did you get it?"
You asked, looking at his face.
"Yeah"
He looked back at you.
"You seems familiar"
You both said at the same time,
"(Last name)(First Name)"
"Kuramochi Yõichi"
You blink at each other.
But before the two of you get to talk to each other, somebody brought you two back in the game, calling out for him to get back in the game, even strange since you knew he was the short stop, how the hell did he manage to chase after the ball? It doesn't make sense but you knew it was because of his legs, you guys didn't tease him cheetah for nothing.
The game was intense, you have to admit that, they the end of the 5th inning, both teams were on tie, 4-4 and it was (country name) turns to attack, it was quite intense at the moment, only if it isn't for you ringing phone. You put your bag back into your lap, before opening it, looking for your phone, looking down as you basically go through your bag searching for the thing.
"Watch out!"
You frown, looking up to the person beside you.
"What now?! Do I look like a target or something?"
You hiss, going back to search for your phone in your bag.
As soon as you look up, something hit your head.
"What the fuck"
You scowl, hands going on where it hits you. And suddenly, your world was spinning. You took a hold of the seat, trying to balance yourself.
"Hey, dear. Are you okay?"
It was still blurry, your head was falling as someone take a hold of your cheeks.
"Hey. Hey"
You frown,
"I swear... I'll never watch baseball.. again"
Then everything went black.
Tumblr media
You and Miyuki Kazuya was never really found of each other, it started when you first met him during your first year in Seidou, despite his arrogant ass, he always seems to out smart that and getting always on your nerve, when the first sem was up, you are pretty sure you hate him despite having a crush on him because of his pretty face. Due to him being your classmate, you end up switching seats with your other classmate, like Kuramochi, just to get away with Miyuki's teasing. Like said, you are pretty sure you hate him, and like wise to him as you always get on each others nerve. It wasn't until you saw him, in the diamond that one time you are strolling around the campus.
There you saw him, sweaty, dirt all over him, and he really look hot on his catcher uniform, you knew he was part of a team, but you never really know it was baseball. Soon, you found yourself on the field, watching him in his catcher uniform. It wasn't so long when he notice you watching him, or their games. Their was some times where you two end up having an eye contact, and never once did he ever failed you to look away first. He just notice you there, watching. You never really thought he would bring that up. Not until you sat their beside him, since Kuramochi didn't agree to switch seats with you, you just sat there, casually sipping on your juice when he face you on his chair, not like you give a damn and he was looking at you and said.
"Were you watching me?"
He said, making you choke on your drink before throwing him a disgusting look as you cover your mouth as you cough.
"You dreaming?!... Why would I ever watch you?"
"oh really? because I'm pretty sure you have your eyes on me whenever I played on the field"
He said, shooting you a cocky grin, and before you could even hit him, the teacher came.
The next thing you knew, your coming to his practice games, even talking to him during breaks, and at some time giving him a middle finger every time he mock mock you when he was at the field. You don't know where it started, but the two of you grew close ever since that conversation happened, getting use on his arrogant remarks, and you realize, despite his bad persona, he was a good person. You didn't know when did you start waiting for him after practice, nor did you realize he was walking you after practice just to make you're safe when you've gone home. You don't know how it started seriously. The next thing you know you're falling hard for him. To the point where you even joined the team as a manager despite having two already, not like they don't want anyways. You guys seems to be often getting tease like 'You bicker like an old couple, get a room already'. At some times, you help him with academic stuffs and he often helps you with math, specially in calculation, since that was the only thing beside baseball he was good at. And sometimes in return, you often play catch him with during both of your free time, but of course, not without throwing an insult here and there to each other that leads to you throwing the ball on his face in which he catches so easily. That's why being a tease you are, the up coming valentines that year, you gave him chocolates, despite knowing he didn't like sweets you have the guts to confess.
"Here"
You toss your home made chocolates into him, it was your break after playing some catch.
"What is this?"
He said, inspecting the white box, and not like you put some effort decorating it, you just taped the sides.
"Chocolate. Duh? Happy Hearts Day Miyuki"
You shrug sarcastic, rolling your eyes at the process.
He frown at you,
"I don't like sweets, (Annoying nick name)"
As he was about to toss back the sweets into you, you help up a hand.
"Toss it back to me, You reject me. Eat it, You accept my confession. And if you choose the first one, just feel free to give it away. I don't care"
You shrug once again before turning around, biting your lips as you don't want to see his answer.
"When did you confess to me?"
He sounds so confused it actually made you laugh and turn around to see his face.
He was frowning when you turn around,
"Right now asshole. I like you"
you hiss at him, and despite your tone, you are smiling at him.
"Well shit"
Out of 100% you knew that the percentage of the great Miyuki Kazuya liking you back was at least 25% out of 100%. He doesn't seems like the one for a relationship anyways, it feels like baseball always come first to him. That's why you gasp when he opened the box of chocolate, ripping the tapes on the sides, grabbing one piece then look at you.
"Be lucky I like you too"
Before putting into his mouth, his face seems to be frowning the first few seconds, before it soften, looking at you.
"Yeah. That's dark chocolate"
You smile at him.
"You don't like sweets after all"
Lets just say, during the White Day, he gave you a flower in return, your least favorite flowers of course. But it means he really is paying attention to what you are saying to him, there was that one time you talked about flower, and you only said it once that you like and dislike this kind of flower, and to tease you in return for giving him a sweets even though it was never really that sweet, he gave you your least favorite flower.
By the time of your second year, things are getting busier than ever, new players, the upper-class retiring, things are busier as expected, you almost facepalm when you realize your boyfriend was late on his first day as second year. He was too careless you knew that arrogant ass, and you almost felt bad for Sawamura, getting entangled with your boyfriends game.
"Karma's a bitch"
You said as you hand your boyfriend a drink after his punishment.
He only roll his eyes at you. It doesn't mean that you two are in a relationship does it means that the two of you have gone on a relationship does it means that you two have gone lovey dovey, it was quite the same while you are still friends, you knew that Miyuki Kazuya was a busy person, you knew that dating a baseball player was quite a risk because, they almost never put you first unless you're a baseball. But you knew that, you knew that you could never go on a peaceful date or a decent date with him, he was always on practice, and of course you knew that, you are one of the managers, of course you know that.
You did your very best to support the team, you watch them in the stand, together with the other players that didn't make it into the first string, you watch them, especially the first year cried as they lost the tickets to Koshien to Inashiro. This means the high school baseball career of the third year ends here. You cried just like the others, you insist on riding with the first string on the way back to school. You sit beside him at the bus. You want to tell him something, but nothing came out of your mouth, nor did he say something, all you ever did was to hold his hand, telling him.
I'm here.
It didn't took so long for the news to come out, he was the new Captain, and you couldn't be any more prouder to him as the Captain's girlfriend. As always, you did what you think that could help the team. You could tell it was hard for him at first, you knew you had tell him, help him to adjust, you did what you had to do, you stay by his side and support him. You tell him to say something to Nori, you tell him to talk to him. You tell him what you could possibly advice him.
By the time of the fall tournament during your second year, while he was being the representative of the fall tournament, You think all the captains are, you waited for him outside, as you are asked from him to come with you. That was the first time you ever saw him jealous, it was quite fantastic, the way he glare at the guy who was talking to you out of comfort as he tries to make a move in which you totally try to push away. That was the first time you ever see him so serious, no playful smirk on his face, just a serious glare, with his arms around you.
As the Fall tournament goes on, here and there you can see girls fan girling over your boyfriend, it was quite an ego boost, you can see the envy stares of your fellow school mates on you, the harsh stares you've gotten ever since you two become a couple are getting more and more frightening as each month pass by, but it doesn't really matter as long as you stay by his side.
Second year Fall tournament, Semi Finals, you stood up on your seat. Looking alert and panic written all over your face as you watch your boyfriend with some player who was trying to force his home run, but you knew it, he was already out since your boyfriend was the ball on his mitt.
"What the fuck is he doing?!"
The first thing you ever did was after the game was to check on your boy friend as soon as you go back to the school. He told you he was fine, that he isn't injured at all, but you should see the discomfort on his face whenever he try to stretch his arms and something.
"Kazu--"
"Don't tell anyone"
"Kazuya."
"(Nick name)  Please"
He pleased you.
"Be lucky I love you"
"I love you too"
So right after the finals, you went after him. As much as you wanted to joined them on going to the hospital, Miyuki Kazuya was already with Rei-san, Kiramochi and Zono, so you did your best to get into the hospital. In the end you scold him for being so careless to himself, he was pretty annoyed to you, but when he look up, he met your crying figure, eyes full of worry. He apologize. His injury was stated as "pulled side abdominal". He wasn't allowed later on to play at the Jingu tournament given the doctor's advice of a three-week recovery period. Within that time, all he did was to look after the team and specifically comment on the sense of unity of the pitchers, other than that he use that as a time to spend with you. It was one of those peaceful night after practice.
"Hey, Kazuyaaa"
You look at him as you both sit on the grass.
"what is it (Nick name)"
He seems annoyed, but both knew that is both your ways of communication with each other.
"Play with me. 20 questions"
He shoot you a look, a look that looked like 'Seriously (Nick name)?'
"Come onnn"
You whine, looking at him with your puppy eyes.
"Alright"
He huff, making you smile as you face him.
"First question, Do you love me?"
".... Really?"
"Come onnn, just answer it"
".... Yes, unfortunately"
"Don't make it sound like a bad thing! Second question, Do you love me?"
"......."
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes it is."
"Okay! great! Third question, Do you love me?"
"I love you."
He said, looking at you dead in the eyes, his glasses reflecting the moon light.
"Forth question, Will you ever let me go?"
"What kind of question is that?"
He scoff, then you shrug.
"Just asking"
Then he hug you from the side, his chin resting on your shoulder.
"I got a good grip of you. So I think"
he flash you a cheeky grin,
"Nope. Not letting you go"
You smiled at this.
"Fifth question"
You started, looking at him through his glasses.
"Out of all the pretty girl out there. Why me"
"I think about that a lot too"
You scoff at his reply.
"Fuck you"
As usual, you usually hit him, but he was injured so all you did was to roll your eyes at him and stand up and give him a middle finger.
You knew he was kidding, but he sucked at this one and you're pissed.
"Just kidding, they might be pretty. But I always think you're the best"
He said, grabbing you by the arm and pulling you on his chest.
"Asshole"
You said hugging him.
"Anyways, the game is done"
"And that too. Be thankful I really love you"
You smile at his words.
After three weeks, he starts some light exercises like running and hanging out with Chris at their training center. You never failed to accompany him, but of course you can't fail the team, every time you went out with the captain, you just make it up with the team by making some rice ball, helping them with a catch and tossing them some so they can do some hit.
You entered your third year at Koshein, you manage to survive till the 3rd round, then after that. Everything seems different, nationals seems to waken up every body, the hunger of nationals seems to go on there blood after that. Your boyfriend at that time seems to take baseball more seriously than anything, and you understand that, you are now on your third year of high school, this might be the last time and your last chance for you to go to Koshien.
As the spring tournament come, every thing seems to be going smoothly, you manage to make it till the Semis but end up losing to Ichidaisan High, Miyuki seems to be focusing on his battery with the second year, at this time you two have barely time for your relationship. You're far more dedicated to your manager job and he was busy being the captain and catcher at the same time. That doesn't stop your boyfriends fan club from attacking you.
You knew that Miyuki Kazuya is a pretty guy, he has a handsome face and its not just you who realize that, his fan girls too. From the moment you have gotten yourself in a relationship with him, you knew the risk of getting attacked by his fan club. You have taken it lightly for the past few years, but during your third year, you notice how they started to threaten you personally, but as usual, you shrug them off. telling them 'Nice Joke' then pat them at the shoulder walking past them. It was until it was one of your free time where you spend your time walking alone on the hallway, it was on your way to the practice after class since your boyfriend was a few minutes ahead of you.
"Hey (Last name)"
You turn around, and you saw Margaret, one of the famous cheer leader that belongs to your boyfriends fan club.
"Hi! What do you want? I'm kinda in a hurry as you can see"
You shoot her a gentle fake smile.
You blink as she march towards you, not even once did you move on your place.
"Let me tell you something, I'm so done watching a low class girl like you hanging around with a guy like Miyuki Kazuya."
"So? what are you getting at?"
You said, putting a hand on your hip.
"What I'm getting at is!"
She raise her hand, as if waiting for someone to place something on, and surprisingly someone put a smoothie on her hand.
And in a blink of an eye, that pink smoothie is on your shirt, staining it in the process.
"You don't! deserve him! I don't know how he manage to be in a relationship for so long to someone who doesn't even match him!"
You blink once again, clenching your fist as you try to keep your cool in front of these bitches.
"Oh, and you did deserve him?"
"Of course"
She scoff at you, chin up as she do so.
"I have no time for this. I have to go"
You said, turning around as you said it. Ignoring the fact that she dump her pink fucking smoothie at you and dissed you.
"I got a picture with him"
You stop on your tracks and take a glance at her in the shoulder.
"So? Picture means nothing dear"
Referring to her picture with your boyfriend.
That doesn't mean anything, yet it bothers you. As time goes by, you felt self conscious. Plus the fact that you and your boyfriend seems to have no time for each other. But of course, as always you understand it. He was the captain, it was enough reason to ditch you out of your date, you keep telling yourself that. You knew how many schools and people scout him, he was a genius catcher, even you could acknowledge that. You knew, sooner or later he would be out of your league.
You didn't think that that sooner will be at the end of your high school life. You kept ignoring what your haters are trying to say, you kept them out of your mind, push them away, out of all their hatred, never once did you ever tell him about it. You don't want to worry him, he was so busy with his high school baseball career. But now that his responsibility as a captain and catcher was done, you wan him to focus only on his career, since he seems to be doing fine without you now a days. After their retirement, you thought that it would be a nice idea to stay out on the field just like your early high school days with him.
"Remember, last year when you're recovering from your injury, we sat here at the same place, playing that 20 questions"
You said with a chuckle, nervously playing with your fingers.
"Yeah, I remember"
He said, his amber iris staring at the stars behind his glasses.
"Miyuki. Can I ask you a question? Just three"
He looked at you for a moment, he must have thought you're kidding, but by the look on your face, you are serious. Making him straighten from his seat.
"Sure.. Anything"
"Am I good enough for you?"
For a moment, he seems surprise for a moment, he gulp and nod
"okay... Second, why are we drifting away?"
You're not a fool, you knew when someone was losing interest into you.
"We are not. drifting away?"
That sounds more like a question rather than a statement. It made your heart ache, but he was making things much easier for you.
"Third, If i break up with you right now, will you chase after me?"
"No"
He chuckle, he thought you're kidding. God he really thought you are kidding.
There is no way in hell you'll break up with him, right?
"Good. Then I'm breaking up with you, Miyuki"
You're never really good enough for him anyways, it took you whole three years to realize you would never be at the same level as him.
You growl, sitting up and holding your head.
"Gosh, that hurts"
You hiss, retracting your hand from the area where you assume you've been hit by the ball.
Suddenly the curtains around you was pushed side, revealing a female nurse.
"Hey! thank God you're finally awake. You're in the stadium infirmary"
You just look at her awkwardly
"Anyways. does anything hurts?"
"Yeah, my head hurts"
"Oh that's normal, you just happened to get hit by a foul ball. But I think your brain seems fine, you're just going to get a few headaches and a bruise.. Anyways, you're free to go your things are on my table"
You nod at her words, but then something sink in into you.
"Ah excuse me"
You said sitting at the edge of the bed, pushing yourself off
She hummed at you, looking at the paper on her desk.
"Who won? how does the tournament ended?"
"Ah! Japan won, I think the score is 7-4 it ended on the 9th inning"
She said,
"The game ended few minutes ago, Miyuki Kazuya did most of the scoring, something might have clicked on him. Though, he look really hot--"
You slam the infirmary door behind you, not wanting to hear the rest.
Bag in hand, your grip tighten on your bag, as you turn into your left, you don't expect to meet face to face with some of the players, let alone Japanese players. You stop on your tracks, it was as if air was knocked out of you as your (eye color) iris met with his amber ones. His teammates was shooting him a look as he too stop on his tracks, before walking past him and you, until you two are the only one left standing on the hallway of the stadium.
Then you turn around, heart aching as you do so.
"(Annoying Nick name) I don't think I'll see you again so soon after six years"
There was a sarcasm in his tone, but you choose to ignore it, turning around, you gave him a smile.
"Yeah, too bad I get to see your annoying face once again"
You scoff at him, smirk going on your face as you turn your back once again at him.
Why are you talking to me?
"Is that the reason why you broke up with me?"
That made you stop on your tracks.
I was never good enough for you. That's why i broke up with you.
"If that was the reason, you could have just told me"
You didn't turn around, nor replied at him.
You just look down, not looking in front of you as you walk away from him for the second time, and never once did he go after you. You felt like crying, it was as if all the feelings and insecurities you felt for the past few years came back crushing into you.
If he really love you, why did he never come to chase you.
Were you that easy to let go?
Or were you just good at running away thinking it was all his fault?
Was this really his fault to begin with?
You stumble back, you though you came crushing with a wall but it turns out to be a person.
"Oh shit. Sorry"
The guy said, offering a hand to help you get up. And you accept it, pulling to help you up, you came face to face with Alexander Smith.
"Oh! You're the lady that caught that foul ball! I was just looking for you!"
He said in english, making you look at him with curiosity.
"Me? Why me?"
"Ah well. As you can see, I was the one batting when you get hit by the foul ball. So i thought I should check up on you then, Ya'know at least offer you a ride home"
He added with a wink, speaking in english.
Did he just flirt at you?
As you are about to speak, an arm wasp its way on your waist, that caught you off guard, looking at the mad man who was the guts to do it, you are quite well shocked.
"Sorry, but she already has a ride home, she's coming with me"
Miyuki Kazuya said in english, looking at Alexander dead in the eyes behind his glasses, somehow reminds you of that one time after the draw outs in the fall tournament back then during your high school days.
Alexander seems to back off by the way Miyuki was glaring at him, before you could even protest, He was already dragging you towards the parking lot of the stadium. Soon both of you was in side the car, he was the one who was driving as you seat in shock beside him. Then you glare at him.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?"
You hiss at him, before looking for your phone in the bag.
He didn't replied, all he did was to focus on his driving.
"Miyuki Kazuya! I'm asking you what the heck is wrong with you!"
"Stop shouting"
"Then answer me"
He seems pissed, in a matter of second he pull out of the road, before pushing the hazard button. Then face you.
"Why did you break up with me"
You scoff at this.
"What the heck are you talking about, Miyuki"
"Why did you broke up with me"
He repeat, his amber iris demanding of answer.
"Miyuki"
You started,
"Why are you asking me that now"
You added,
"You had your chance to ask that question six years ago"
Your heartache as you look at him.
"I think its a little to late for you to ask me that"
He deserves better, you know that.
You will never be good enough for him,
You knew and accepted that fact that's why you let him go,
But what hurts you the most is that he never even chase after you.
But is he really at fault?
You took it as a chase to unlock your side of the car and get out, as your about to slam the door, you heard something you thought you'll never hear again.
"I just want to know where did I go wrong, baby"
His voice cracked,
"I still love you, just give me a chance to make things right"
Why now? When you actually thought you've moved on from him. Why now?
Maybe going in this match is a big mistake.
Tumblr media
"Oh dear, you look awful"
Leanne, your bartender friend comment, slamming a glass of  Margarita in front of you.
"Thanks for the compliment, I met my ex today"
You said, before drowning yourself with cocktail
"Interesting, which one?"
You shoot her a glare.
Of course, during that six years you tried to date different guys, but as you get to know them, the more you realize you've always been comparing Miyuki to them, and its not fair, it never worked out anyways.
"Oh, the baseball fella then"
Her deep blue eyes sparkle in delight.
"Tell me about it. I used to play baseball when I was in high school"
"Leanne-san"
"Zup?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure go ahead"
She said, purring herself some drinks.
" If you had an athlete boyfriend, and everyone seems to be telling you that you are not good enough for him --"
"What would I do?"
She cut you off, at the same time finishing your question.
"It's simple. I won't give a damn to whatever they say"
"Don't make it sound so easy!"
You scoff at her, get only laugh at you as she refill your glass.
"Oh dear, sweet (Nick Name). I don't know what is up with you. But for me, it's up to my boyfriend"
She said, holding up a finger.
" When it comes to relationship, others words doesn't really matter when it comes to me. And if that was the case, Fuck others, and if I knew it to myself that my boyfriend is really out of my league, I'll do my best to be enough for him, I'll support him in his games, I'll be there for him. Unless he pushed me away"
She said, suddenly shifting her glaze from her drink into you.
"If he did push me away, then that might be the reason for me to leave him. If he told me i wasn't enough then fine. I'll leave. It's not like i don't know that myself."
Then as much to your surprise, she took a sip directly from the bottle of vodka
"What the.."
"What? I own this place. I'm the boss"
She scoff then laugh.
"Guess you broke up with him."
She shoot you a look and lean from the counter.
"It was written all over your face dear."
She stated, making you look away from her glaze.
"The guilt"
She added
"What's the matter? He didn't even go after me"
You hiss at her.
"He didn't even go after me six years ago when he should have done it. What give him the nerve to ask me now why I broke up with him?"
"If he did. What would you do?"
"What?"
Her question caught you off guard.
"Six years ago, if he did chase after you. What would you do? take him back?"
Yeah, If he chase after you, what would you do?
You..
"I still wouldn't"
"Why?"
"I panic! I was self insecure i wasn't good enough for him, and..."
"and what?"
"I got a scholarship back in (your country name), in was one of the finest university in my country... I was scared long dis--"
"You should have told him."
She cut you off,
"You broke up with him out of nowhere thinking It would be the best for you and him. Yet you don't gave him a reason why, you left him wondering why for the past few years (nick name). That's what I'm thinking"
She said.
"He seems to be doing fine after I left"
"You got a point there"
She chuckle.
"But how do you know? You've been gone for the first four years, and came back almost two years ago right?"
She was right, you've been gone for the past few years during your time in college. You met her a year ago when your co-worker brought you in this bar, then you met this Filipino American bar owner that seems to be happy go lucky with her life.
"Admit it (Nick name) you know nothing about him, or what he's been through after you left him."
She grab your glass, purring you another shot of margarita.
"Stop running away and talk to him. He deserve an explanation"
She said, slamming the glass in front of you, and in stead of answering or replying to her, you drink it straight.
"What's up with you children nowadays"
She mumble under her breath, making you wonder at some point.
"Come to think of it, you seems to know everything when it comes to love. How to you know what to do?"
She only laugh at you.
" I know nothing dear, I only have logic with me. Besides you sounds like an old friend, though, he's much more dumber than you"
You only laugh at that, her words echoing on your mind.
Admit it (Nick name) you know nothing about him, or what he's been through after you left him.
You left him wondering why for the past few years
Stop running away and talk to him. He deserve an explanation.
Tumblr media
"Kuramuchi"
You wave at your old friend as you decided to meet up.
"Zup (Nick name)?"
He said, taking the vacant seat in front of you.
"As much as I want to talk to you about how you've been. I.. uhm... I want to talk about Miyuki"
"You mean after you left?"
"Pretty much about that"
You said as you choose a meal to order, after that you continue your conversation.
"How is he?"
"Now or after you left?"
"both?"
You said, doesn't sound so sure.
"Well to be honest, we never really go on'a same college"
He seems to think for a few seconds before adding
"But I'm pretty sure he was devastated to the point where he almost quit baseball at some point"
And when he met your crestfallen face,
"He was really heartbroken (Nick name)"
Then the food came, you don't even have the appetite to eat.
"When he learned that you go back to (your country name) he went after you"
"no way"
"Ya' bet"
He scoff, eating his steak.
"You owe him an explanation after all."
fuck.
"When he came back we thought he got what he came for, but he was worse than ever. I mean, that time I heard he started playing baseball again, he was still in his game senses"
He took another bite.
"Few months later, after our finals, we decided to meet up, checking what the others where doing. Then I saw him, at first nothing seems wrong. But something seems off with him, his eyes grew cold. there was barely a shine on it. It was as if you took it all away with you"
He drink his juice,
"So I asked him what he saw when he came to (your country name). (Nick name), he told us you are with someone else. That is all he said, he was never really the type to talk about himself let alone his past or something"
Your heart stopped beating.
"And he doesn't want to believe it that's why he kept on focusing on playing baseball. That is what happened while you are gone."
"I thought he would be better off without me like what they said."
You gasp to yourself, looking at him with teary eyes.
"He was never better off without you."
He snicker,
"And don't cry on me, people might get the wrong idea"
He added, smiling at you.
"Anyways, after that. We heard a year ago you are back in Japan, he never stopped looking for you. Ya'know"
He shoot you a grin.
"He always watch you from afar. (Nick name)"
All this years.
"No wonder why he was all out on our match match. You should have seen his face when he learned that it was you who got hit by the ball"
He snicker once again, an image off a pissed off Miyuki going over your head.
"He was so pissed off he made sure never to make a single soul step on the base. Especially the Alexander one"
That must be because he was the one who hit you in the very first place.
"I heard he gave you a ride after the match"
"Yeah. More like forced me too"
He laugh once again.
"Did he asked?"
"Yeah"
"Did you answered him?"
"Nope"
"Why did you break up with him?"
"I thought I wasn't good enough for him."
"He was the one to decided that. Ya'know"
"Yeah, I know"
"Tell him then."
"Do you think he will forgive me?"
"Six years had gone by, despite his still arrogant and  cheeky ass, he care for you more than anything. You got him warp around your finger despite breaking up with him for no reason out of nowhere just because you let others get in your head which is pretty much stupid."
He said, rolling his eyes at you.
"Haha, nice to meet you again Kuramochi"
"Yeah. Talk to him"
"Don't worry. I will"
Tumblr media
When you said you are going to talk to him, you mean it like after his tournament game. So here you stand, right after their game, awkwardly waiting for him to come out as you stand beside his car in the parking lot. You play with your finger to easy your nerves.
"(First name)"
You stiffen as you heard your name roll of his tongue
"We need to talk"
Four words was all it takes to make him nervous enough as if he was having a hard time making a call at the battery.
"Sure, where do you w--"
"I'm sorry"
You cried,
This is pathetic,
You thought as you started crying
"I'm sorry for making you think our break up was at your fault. I'm sorry"
You cried, bowing at him.
"I never meant to hurt you. I was just getting insecure if I was really good enough for you, and because I ran away too, I should have told you I got a scholarship back in my country and that I'm leaving right after our graduation. I'm sorry, it was never your fault. I'm so sorry for making you feel that way"
"I wish you knew how much it destroyed me when you left"
I'm sorry.
"You left me when I needed you the most"
He added, making you painfully close your eyes as your heart painfully aches.
This must be your karma for being a fucking coward.
"And still"
He felt an arm warp around your tiny form.
"I told you. I loved you all the same"
He told you tight, gently rocking you as you cried into his chest, his cologne smells like nostalgia, the same one he always used during your high school days.
"I don't care how complicated this gets, I still want you"
Then he let you go, getting a hold of your tear stained cheeks.
"I should have chase after you. I thought you're kidding when you broke up with me. Sorry"
He said, his amber iris meeting yours behind his glasses.
"No. It--"
"Let's play a game"
He cut you off.
"20 questions"
By the way he was looking at you and cupping your cheeks, you have no choice but to nod.
"Do you still love me?"
There was no point of denying, you nod.
"Do you want me back?"
You take a hold of his hand on you,
"I don't--"
"That is something for me to decided (annoying nick name). Now, yes or no?"
"Yes..."
"Good. Now, do you miss me?"
"A lot."
"You better"
He said, kissing your forehead.
It wasn't so long till they finally make it inside the car, they spend the rest of the ride answering the rest of the questions, one they always did in high school whenever they want to catch up with each others doing, it was fun, the feeling of someone you love coming back into you like it was always meant to happened, people learn how to forgive anyways. As for Miyuki Kazuya, you have always been his anchor, you have always been his someone whom he could always hold on into, that must be the reason why we was so devastated and broken when you left. He always knew you had a reason for leaving, and now that he knew, he would make sure you never felt that way ever again. It took fate, six years to put you two back together again. Heck he can't even focus now that you are right beside him.
"Remember the first time we met?"
"Yeah, for a second you are just staring at me behind your classes then minutes after that you decided that teasing me would be the best idea ever made"
You said, rolling your red eyes from the earlier crying at him.
"I knew I did that from the first moment we met.. It was"
He seems serious it made you look at him as he focus from his driving
"It was not love at first sight, but familiarity. Like.."
He look at you for a moment, his eyes telling you something underneath his glasses.
" It's you. Its gonna be you"
The Miyuki Kazuya you knew in high school would never admit, nor say something like that. Years and experience does sometimes change  a person, it would make you realize your mistakes and wrong doings.
"Asshole"
You said, holding his harm before giving it a squeeze
"Will you catch me again. (Nick name)?"
You look at him once again, only to meet with his amber iris once again before looking back in the road.
"That's my last question"
he explained, making you realize he was asking permission to start again.
You smile at him,
"If you know the way on my apartment"
You didn't answer him right away, you left him on hanging that night. But her answer is loud and clear when you arrive on his next game, cheering and threatening to dump him is he loose, oh and you never forgot to bring some homemade dark chocolate for him.
It's good to have her back.
He thought, his eyes shining, a genuine smile going on his lips.

“It stinks in here.”
That’s the first thing Miyuki says when he steps into the studio the next day.
Jerry, at the computer, laughs quietly.
You grin. “Yeah. Sorry. That would be Dennis.”
“Right. Saw the release today. They’re not shutting you down.”
“Well, it was put much more nicely there. They’re not shutting us down now but they are giving us the rest of the year to perform well. If we don’t —” you make a cutting motion with your hand across your neck “— we’re out.”
“Fixed our pay, though,” Jerry mutters, sending you a sidelong glance.
Righttt. Dennis had unapologetically let it slip you’d been covering part of his check. You think it was revenge for him getting in trouble for not sending a representative down for the company to the press conference but really, it just makes them sound like assholes.
Jerry was a little upset about it but you’d pressed that if push came to shove, you had your sister and Hector to fall back on. He had no one other than his grandma and while DJing at parties brings in a little extra side cash, it wouldn’t have been enough had you not stepped in.
But that’s over now. They’re paying him his old rate again.
Of course, you two might end up turned out onto the street come the new year but you’d cross that bridge when you got to it.
Miyuki doesn’t say anything to that, though his eyes sweep over to you curiously. You just shake your head minutely. You’ll tell him downstairs.
You and Jerry had come in early to set up. He hadn’t changed much but you two needed to do a few tests, run through some things, wake up that old muscle memory of how things used to be.
Things are the same again now, except for the purple bruise on your temple, the professional baseball player standing in your studio, and the hubbub about your return tonight.
“You want anything from downstairs, Mouser?”
Jerry shakes his head. “Had Jersey Mike’s earlier. I’m still good. When’re you gonna be back?”
“Won’t be long. We’re doing BestBuy tomorrow. Probably just an hour or something. That okay?”
“Yeah, that’s fine. Where is the Lysol, though? He is right. Freakin’ stinks of weed in here.”
You snicker. “It’s in the closet.”
“Right, thanks. Have fun.”
You go over to Miyuki, who is taking in the room. Overall a small recording studio, you have the control room, where Jerry operates the sound board, then the live room — the actual studio — wherein you broadcast from. Both areas are separate from each other.  A glass window mounted above the sound board looks into it, showing the desk with the various computer screens, your mic and headphones, and a chair. On the walls inside the control room you have a few puzzles you and Jerry have done together framed, along with newspaper clippings of Night Owl’s sparse mentions in the media.
More have appeared, though, from far more well-known newspapers, like the Washington Post, the New York Times. The new ones read things like:
WHO AND WHAT IS NIGHT OWL, KCSD’S NIGHTTIME RADIO SEGMENT?
SOCAL’S MOST UNDERRATED RADIO SEGMENT, NIGHT OWL, ON 101.1 FM
UNKNOWN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC BUT BELOVED BY UC STUDENTS AND GRAVEYARD SHIFT WORKERS, NIGHT OWL, A RADIO SEGMENT
HOW THE PADRES’ WINNING HOME-RUN OF THE WORLD SERIES THRUSTED A LITTLE-KNOWN SHOW INTO STARDOM
“Little-known show? That’s kinda cruel. And that’s coming from me.”
Jerry snickers.
You grin. “Yeah, well, sympathetic press gets us more listeners, so they can keep going.”
“That is true…”
The two of you slip out of the studio.
He glances at you and smirks. “Nice shirt.”
You grin, tugging at the black shirt with just the Wonder Woman logo on the breast. “Thank you. Wonder Woman is excellent. I have a poster of her and the Wonderfam in my room.”
“Of course you do.”
He pushes the down button for the elevator.
“I’ve been thinking I want to get some more snails if I get a bigger tank, like two of them, and you know what I’m gonna name them?”
“Let me guess — Wonder Woman and Superman?”
“Aw, look at you. All knowledgeable about comics now.”
“Well, you did talk my ear off about it for two hours straight.”
The elevator doors slide open.
You smile. “I did, didn’t I?”
Your studio is on the tenth floor of KCSD’s building, which is located in Hillcrest, a neighborhood west of your apartment in Normal Heights. Right across the I-805.
Outside, the sun is beginning its descent. The time change is in a couple days, so it’ll be setting even earlier after that. You take the time to enjoy the last long days of sunlight. It’s warm today, perfectly comfortable, especially with the sun still out and a light breeze. You’re in your Wonder Woman t-shirt, dark jean shorts, your regular Doc Martens that are scuffed and worn, and a pair of black over-the-knee socks, finished with a black cherry lip lacquer.
“So, what was he talking about? Did they lower your pay?”
“Not mine. His. A few months ago. But,” you sigh, tilting your face to the sky, closing your eyes as you come to the crosswalk. You still need a second to adjust to the brightness. “Jerry lives on his own with his grandmother. It’s just them two. She has diabetes, though, and needs medication for it. We get insurance but it doesn’t cover the entirety of the prescription. The two of them wouldn’t have been able to live on that paycheck, so I told payroll to fill it from mine.”
Miyuki is quiet for a second. You open your eyes, a little more adjusted to the light.
“Nice of you,” he says at last.
“It’s just me and Batman and Robin. It made the most sense.”
“Hm.”
The light turns. You two cross the street to the 7-Eleven, where Rico’s Tacos, a food truck, sits adjacent of.
You and Jerry are loyal customers to them, so when you step up the window, you are instantly recognized.
“Tee! What’s up? We heard about what happened! Free tacos for life, yeah? Or, well, maybe just a few months.”
You grin up at Jaime Moreno as he leans out the window, handsome face split into a grin.
“Cheap ass,” his sister, Juana ‘Janie’ Moreno, hisses, shoulder checking him out of the window to grin down at you. “Mi cielito, you can have as many free tacos as you want!”
“She’s not gonna go on a date with you,” Jaime mutters.
“Yeah, well, she’s not gonna go on a date with you either, stupid ass.”
You laugh. Miyuki snorts quietly.
Janie’s eyes dart to him, eyebrow raising. “Who’s this?”
Jaime looks at him, too, blinking.
You can’t help but laugh. “This is Miyuki. He’s the guy who concussed me.”
“Ohhh,” they say in unison.
“Sorry, man,” Jaime says, eyes twinkling. “We don’t watch much baseball.”
“Oh, don’t feel bad,” you say. “I didn’t know who he was until I woke up in the hospital.”
“Okay,” Miyuki says. “Why don’t we order?”
“Right.”
You place your orders, he pays, and in no time, you’re sitting on the curb next to each other, soda bottles between you, feasting on your still-hot tacos.
“Okay,” he says around a mouthful of a spicy chicken taco. “This is good.”
“Right? And look, no allergic reactions!” You grin, gesturing to yourself.
He snickers.
You two sit in a relatively peaceful silence. Cars drive up and down the street, some pulling into 7-Eleven for gas and snacks, while others line up at Rico’s for dinner. A few pigeons land near you, cooing, no doubt eyeing your food.
Gold rays paint over you, picking out the red highlights in Miyuki’s dark hair, light brown skin glowing.
Your stomach swoops like you missed a step and you look away.
On the sidewalk, a teenage girl walks a small dog. A little girl skips ahead of them, running through the pigeons, letting out a delighted laugh as they flutter away.
You smile, watching her go.
Across the street, a woman hurries down the sidewalk, arms laden with grocery bags. One of them breaks, groceries spilling out. You pause, already starting to set your plate down to run across the street and help her, but someone else swoops in, kindly helping to pick up the vegetables and fruits that tumbled onto the concrete.
You sigh wistfully. “I love humanity.”
“Not exactly representative of humanity collectively, is it? Logically speaking.”
“These are just outliers, you think?”
He nods like it should be obvious. “There are lots of words to describe humanity but I’m not sure good is one of them.”
“No?” you ask lightly.
He shrugs. “Look at what we do. Pollute the earth, start wars over nothing, create mass weapons of destruction. Doesn’t sound very good to me.”
“You think humanity is inherently selfish and bad?”
“I don’t know. I don’t see anything that says it’s inherently good.”
You smile. “How miserable you must be to resent your own kind.”
“I don’t resent humanity. I just don’t think we’re good. That’s all.”
“So, what do you believe in?”
“Myself.”
“Miserable and lonely, then. Sounds like an excuse.”
“An excuse?”
“You’re letting them win,” you say patiently. “Being a cynic, thinking humanity is a plague on this earth, that’s the easy way out. It excuses you, doesn’t it? Despair and cynicism are easy. It absolves you of responsibility. Removes yourself from the equation, from the possibility of helping because, why help if there is no hope?”
You pause and take a breath. You aren’t hungry anymore. Something bubbles inside your chest but you force yourself to be calm. To be patient.
“Miyuki… You aren’t smart or philosophical for saying humanity is doomed. Not at all. You have to believe humanity is good.”
“Why?”
“Humanity named kindness so it must know kindness. We just saw a stranger help another stranger. They didn’t have to. But they did. If you look for greed, selfishness, or corruption, you will find it. Try looking for kindness for once, for the goodness of humanity.”
“You —”
“Are naive? The way that I am, it is strategic. Necessary. Because what else do we have? It’s too easy to go that route. And it’s what they want. The government wants us hopeless, wants us to think there is no way to solve the problems we have created. Wants us to think we are inherently greedy, selfish, and evil because it absolves them of responsibility. And when we believe it, it absolves us of responsibility, too. But it’s a double-whammy, because not only that, but we’re also getting fucked over by the government all the while. No one wins. Nothing gets better.”
You set your food ahead, gazing intently at him. In the setting rays of the sun, his eyes are honey brown.
“Even if you can’t bring yourself to believe that, at least appreciate that you are here, existing with everyone else. How extraordinary it is that we even exist. You know how young the universe is? It’s just barely coming into adolescence. For this brief moment in time, life can exist. But for most of the universe’s life, it will be cold, dark, and empty. Stars will die out. Even the black holes will die in some quadrillion years.”
“Just sounds like an existential crisis if you ask me.”
“We’re here, Miyuki. Existing in that haven in time. We should enjoy our time here.”
“I enjoy my life.”
You take a leap.
“I’m saying other than baseball.”
He falters. You can tell you’ve got him out, because his next words are sharp again.
“Awfully presumptuous, aren’t you?”
You knew that. And yet, something inside you urged you to say it anyway. To presume.
“I’m happy to be proved wrong.”
He’s quiet for a long moment. The sky is painted shades of pink and orange as the sun sets.
“What do you want me to say?”
“What do you do for fun?”
“Baseball.”
“Other than baseball. I like photography, doing puzzles in my free time, watching Say Yes to the Dress, reading poetry, and making playlists. Not just for the show but for me, too. I like watching Batman and Robin move around in their tank. I like — love — the ocean and the beach. I like swimming, too, but the ocean is usually too cold for that, and the pool at my apartment complex isn’t taken care of enough and while I love swimming — love that feeling after several hours of it, when you’re in bed and you feel like you’re rocking on a boat — my fear of getting a UTI is stronger.”
His lips twitch.
You nudge his shoulder with yours. “There has to be something. Like my puzzles. I do them in my free time but also if the show is particularly slow. Jerry likes to do sudoku and he likes Star Wars, but not the recent movies that come out. He says those all suck. Rogue One is apparently the only good movie to come out. I’ve seen it. It’s actually very… touching.”
He sets his plate down with a sigh and picks up the soda bottle, which is sweating in the warm weather. Air hisses out as he untwists the cap. He takes a drink. You try not to stare at the long line of his neck, Adam’s apple bobbing. Focus. You need to focus and stop ogling him.
Easier said than done.
“What are you going to do during the offseason?” you ask, trying for a difference approach.
“The usual. Workout. Review game footage. Plan for next season. The only thing different now is I’m still house hunting and no, real estate doesn’t much interest me outside of that.”
You purse your lips, thinking.
He sets the bottle down and looks at you.
“You should show me.”
“Show you what?”
“How to…” he gestures aimlessly. “Enjoy life. Outside of baseball, I mean.”
You give him a sad smile. “It’s not exactly something that can be taught, Miyuki.”
“Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot. Prove it to me and I’ll believe you.”
“I’m not going to do it because of that. I don’t care about being right or wrong. You can think what you’d like. But… if you really want to, maybe I can help you get into the swing of it.”
“Do your worst.”
“No,” you say, smiling. “I’m going to do my best.”
The look in his eyes is hard to quantify but the set of his mouth is soft.
“I look forward to it.”

Tee: It’s great to be back here, guys. Really, really great. I’m in desperate need of some good old human connection. Lucky, too, that our switchboard is literally lighting up. Wow. [Laughing] What a reception. Trending on Twitter, too. That’s fun. Don’t worry, guys, we’ll get to callers in a sec, for now, our first song of the night… I thought about it for a long time. Interestingly enough, there is only one song I know of in my catalog with the word concussion in it. And it’s a great song! But not the tone I’d like to set for tonight. So…
[Coldplay’s “A Head Full of Dreams” starts in the background]
Tee: What’s tonight's theme? Frankly, it’s me being grateful to be alive. To be here right now, in this moment of time. I hope you guys can feel that, too.

Caller 52: Hello? Tee: Hi! Thanks for calling in. What’s your name? Caller 52: My name is Emi.  Tee: Hi, Emi! I’m Tee. Where are you calling from? Caller 52: From Japan, actually.  Tee: No way, are you serious? Caller 52: Yes. It’s only the afternoon here, so it’s easy to listen in. Many of my friends are since everything happened with Miyuki-san. I just wanted to say we are glad you’re okay. We’ve been listening for the last week but we’ll keep listening. So, you have some supporters across the pacific, too.  Tee: Hey, Emi, I really appreciate that. Thank you. And since it’s only the afternoon there, I hope you have a good day, too. I’ve seen a lot on Twitter saying people not just from San Diego or the SoCal area are listening in and so many callers are saying that, too. Guys — that is so sick.
[Tai Verdes’ “A-O-K” starts in the background]
Tee: I feel like I’ve been saying it all night but — you guys are freakin’ awesome. I’m glad we’re all here tonight.

From my week-long stay for the concussion and for the allergic reaction, too.  Caller 106: God, that is awesome. It’s really nice to have you back, Tee. Mouser did good but it’s just not the same. You’ve gotten me through three years of college.  Tee: Hey, that was all you. I just kept you company. Any requests? Caller 106: I’m about to drive home from work. I could use something to keep me awake. Something I can sing along to, you know? Tee: Oh, I got you. Roll down the windows and enjoy — and drive safely, please.

Things continue like that for the most part.
Night Owl runs from eight to three, so you often sleep in until noon. Not the most sustainable sleeping schedule and the first few days are rough, since you’ve been on a ‘normal’ one without having the show, but once you get into the swing of it, it gets better.
Your days are often free, too, so if Miyuki doesn’t have a photoshoot or an interview or any other kind of public engagement, you’re dragging him around the city.
It’s mostly to just get him outside.
He doesn’t need to pick up, like, knitting or something but… he should go out and do things anyway. They don’t have to be extraordinary, either. Even going out and sitting in a cafe and reading is good.
He’s a bit of a solitary creature, you find. He doesn’t have friends here — “I have the team,” he says, but when you ask whether they hang out, he admits it’s never quite voluntary on his part. More of an obligation. Outside of that, there is nothing else. But the thing is, humans need social contact. Social support. It is quite literally hardwired into your DNA.
And being solitary or a homebody doesn’t have to change. You get wanting to stay home. But it’s just… there’s a balance to these things, right?
Mostly… you just want him to enjoy himself.
Bit by bit, it’s starting to work.
You find yourself at Barnes & Noble with your sister at one point and find a book on Shohei Ohtani that seems interesting. You ask him about it and he says he hasn’t read it.
You buy two copies and drag him to Balboa Park to read on the grass on a particularly warm November day.
He humors you, and most of all, you certainly entertain him by asking, “What the hell an ERA and an OPS are,” and all kinds of questions about the baseball jargon you stumble upon in your reading.
Oftentimes, you bring your new camera, a very expensive model you’d picked out at BestBuy a couple weeks ago after several hours of contemplation.
Photography is just a hobby for you, nothing serious, which is why you still haven’t accepted the Padres’ offer to join their team.
The show is going well. More than well. Most nights, you have a long line of callers and even more interaction on Twitter. Once people discover you, they tend to stick around, liking what they find. It helps you have people from all around the world listening. Your listeners in Japan and other parts of the world get the advantage of it being afternoon when your show airs, so it’s feasible to reach a wide audience there. Especially after all the attention you got.
The blessings of modern technology also allow for each segment to be recorded and stored away on streaming apps, so if people aren’t staying up, they can listen the next day, after the fact. That is a popular option.
The time continues to pass. Miyuki’s birthday comes up — turning a whole twenty-nine. You’re a few years younger than him at twenty-six.
November ends and December begins. The city is festive, houses decorated in their various religious symbols for the upcoming holidays. But of course, the lowest the temperatures will go is the fifties and that’s at night. In the day, it floats around the mid-sixties. Cool but not uncomfortable. For some, it ruins the experience of the winter holidays, but you quite like being able to still wear shorts or leggings during the month, so you don’t complain.
All the while, you and Miyuki hang out. You visit museums, art galleries, exhibits, botanical gardens. Sometimes you go to your apartment and complete your more difficult puzzles since he likes the challenge or you try to teach him photography. Sometimes you go to his apartment and he answers your questions on baseball or you cook together or you play shogi together (more like he teaches you how to play). He’d tried it out after your talk, said he was always forced to play it with one of his old teammates from high school but he hadn’t touched it since he graduated. Mostly, you think he enjoys beating you at it but you don’t mind.
That’s the point, isn’t it?
You’re still searching for new things to explore, though.
“Has there ever been anything you wanted to do as a kid that you never did? I always wanted to go to Magic Mountain but my sister is a scaredy cat.”
“Why didn’t your parents just go with you?”
“Didn’t see any use in even going to Six Flags if she wasn’t going to go and they certainly weren’t going to come with me on rides.”
He glances at you, curious.
The two of you find yourselves sitting in the stands of a Little League game. You’d stepped out of a cafe for a late lunch when he spotted the fields and dragged you over to it, which was a nice surprise. Most often, if your days are not pre-planned, you just go where your whims take you. But now it’s his whims leading you to this field. Probably expecting a high school team or something. No, this is Little League. And you mean Little League.
Most of the kiddos running around look to be four to six years old. Their batting helmets are too big for their heads. Volunteers stand around, watching like hawks.
You watch with a small smile as a little boy hits the ball off the tee, then, instead of running down first base line, runs forward to chase it.
A volunteer swoops in as the other boys of the team close in to grab the ball in clumsy formation; the volunteer lifts the little boy back over to the first base line and urges him on. He finally runs for first base.
Miyuki looks amused, too. You wouldn’t have thought he’d enjoyed watching but these little kids are fun to watch. No one gets upset when they chase the ball after hitting it instead of running to the bases. Or if they make more clumsy mistakes. They’re just kids, after all. Babies, really. But they’re having fun and so, everyone else is, too.
Even Miyuki, who watches with a soft look in his eyes.
Or he was. Now he is looking at you, curiosity clear in those amber brown eyes.
“What?”
“I know I’m being a hypocrite by saying this but you don’t talk much about your parents. Did they visit you when you were in the hospital?”
“You can ask questions about my life, Miyuki. We’re friends. Friends do that.”
“Right.”
“And no, they didn’t.” You shrug. “But that’s fine. My sister and I don’t talk to them. They had very specific visions about what we should do with our lives. Go to an Ivy League, become a doctor, an engineer, a programmer. Neither of us wanted that. My sister wanted to be a flight attendant and I wanted to be a radio host. Not very impressive or glamorous jobs in their eyes and certainly not jobs that would earn us six figures so we could give them money. So. We don’t talk. Well, really, they disowned us. But you know.”
“That…”
You shoot him a grin. “It’s okay. They weren’t that great growing up. They took care of us but it was always just a transactional thing and if we didn’t do something they liked, they always said something like After all we have done for you blah blah blah. As if housing us and clothing us and feeding us makes them good parents.”
You yawn, stretching your arms above your head. “Anyway, we’ve got Hector’s family now. They’re loads better.”
“Endlessly optimistic.”
“I can’t change anything,” you chuckle. “That’s in the past. I’ve grieved it, believe me. But in the end, there’s just nothing left for me. So.”
He nods and turns his eyes back to the field.
Another little boy hits the ball from the tee. He doesn’t try chasing it but he heads straight for second base instead of first.
“My mom died when I was a kid.”
You jolt, head whipping towards him. He doesn’t look at you, instead out at the field, where chaos unfolds, punctuated by parents’ cheers and urges and the kids’ yells and laughter. It balances the weight of his words but you still feel them pierce deep in the soft tissue of your heart.
“After she died, my dad wasn’t all there. For most of my childhood and teenage years, he was never there. Had to cook, clean, balance the checkbook, pay the bills. He came around in my final year of high school but it still wasn’t…”
“Can’t make up for all that you had to do,” you murmur.
“But it’s like you said. I can’t change any of it. He tries now, which I guess is what matters the most in the end.”
“Still,” you say softly. “I’m sorry you had to deal with that from such a young age.”
“I had baseball,” he says, looking at you. “If I didn’t have my parents, I had baseball. But I guess that’s the point of this.”
You tilt your head, silently urging him to go on.
He lifts a shoulder. “I won’t have baseball forever.”
“I don’t know,” you say, smiling. “If there is anyone who can keep going forever, I think it’s you.”
“Yeah. Then they’d ban me from the parks.”
You laugh and turn back around, shifting on the metal bench. Your shoulder brushes his.
“I don’t remember much from my childhood other than wanting to play baseball and be the best,” he says, finally addressing your previous question.
“Didn’t even want to go to an amusement park or something?”
He gives you a suspicious looks. “What’s with you and amusement parks?”
“They’re fun!”
“Didn’t realize you were such an adrenaline junkie, tomcat. Maybe you did get hit with that ball on purpose.”
You laugh. “I am not and I did not! They’re just fun! This is coming from someone who has clearly never experienced the pleasure of a rollarcoaster.”
“There are many words to describe rollarcoasters and a pleasure is not one of them. Besides, you’re still recovering from your concussion. I don’t think it’s a great idea to go on a contraption that shoots you from zero to seventy in a few seconds.”
“I’ll ask Hector when I see him tomorrow for my appointment.”
He chuckles. ”You do that. But you know what I have been thinking?”
“Tell me.”
“We’ve been to the zoo, we’ve been all around the city but… why haven’t we gone to the aquarium yet?”
“Oh, my god, you’re right.”
“Doing anything tomorrow?”
“I have my appointment. We’ll go to the aquarium next week Tuesday. Be less busy.”
“Hey, maybe I’m doing something.”
“Are you?” you ask knowingly.
He looks away. “No… but it’s the principle!”
“You’re right. Are you free next week Tuesday to go to the aquarium?”
“Hmm. Yes.”
You nudge his shoulder, smiling. He nudges back, then stays there, your shoulders and arms pressed together, skin against skin. Your heart does something funny at the feeling.
You stay like that until the game is over.
Tumblr media
Your six-week follow up appointment is tomorrow in the afternoon.
Another round of CT and X-ray scans reveal good — great — news. Your brain contusions are completely healed, which finally makes Hector relax. Your skull fracture is entirely healed, too. It wasn’t a very big fracture — if it was, you’d be in a whole lot more trouble, like, brain surgery kind of trouble — so it’s smallness in size lends a hand to your healing. The bruise on your temple is gone, too.
You do have one question, though.
“Soooo, when do you think I’m safe to ride a rollarcoaster?”
“Six months from now,” Hector says flatly.
“What?!”
“One-hundred-and-nineteen. That was the exit velocity on that ball. Concussions don’t just heal like that. They take a long time.”
You pout. You’d figured that. You didn’t think you had to wait six months, though…
“How about two months?”
“Why do you even want to get on one?”
“For fun.”
Hector looks at you for a second, lips pursed. Then he sighs. “Three months. Wait at least three months from the day it happened, so October twenty-fifth to January twenty-fifth. Then after that, you can go. But you must exercise caution. Listen to your body. If you start to feel sick or if your head hurts, stop immediately. Okay? These things are different in everybody but you still have to be careful.”
“I will be. Promise.”

[Night Owl Transcript — 20:34 — 12/9/2022]
Tee: It’s Friday night, folks, which means it’s I-play-music-and-you-imagine-your-lives-as-movies night. Have fun and be safe out there.
[M83’s “Midnight City” plays] Lookin’ at the milky skyline The city is my church It wraps me in its blinding twilight
[Off-air recording starts] Mouser: You and Miyuki sure are spending a lot of time together, huh.  Tee: Yeees? Why? Mouser: Just an observation. Tee: Is it really? Mouser: [Laughs] It is! You guys seem like you’re having a lot of fun together. Just surprised, I guess.  Tee: Why? Mouser: He just doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you’d be friends with.  Tee: I guess not. But he’s not all bad. I just think he’s… Mouser: Got a couple chips on those broad, broad shoulders? Tee, Mouser: [Laughter] Tee: Pretty much. Mouser: I guess I’m not surprised. Guy has bad luck when it comes to concussing people. Tee: [Chuckling] What? Mouser: No way. You don’t know? Tee: Know what? Mouser: Ohhhhh. Oh, shit. Wait. It was this thing… hold on. I’m going in.
Jerry opens the door to the studio, rolling in the chair from the control room. You sit up, sliding off the headphones, pulling your legs from the desk, frowning a little. Midnight City plays quietly from the headphones that you set on the desk.
“I thought you knew,” Jerry says, looking a tad nervous as he rolls up next to you, tapping quickly on his phone.
“I’d never heard anything about it.”
“Well, basically, like, three or four years ago, during his second season here in the US and with the Atlanta Braves, a few weeks into the season, one of his foul balls hit a little girl in the stands.”
“What?”
He passes you his phone. It’s a recent article, talking about not just your concussion, but the other one, too. About a six-year-old girl who, in a home game in Atlanta between the Braves and the Washington Nationals, was hit by a foul ball in the first inning.
“She suffered permanent brain damage,” he says, frowning a little bit. “Like she started having seizures after and stuff. Speech issues, mobility issues. I looked more into it after I first heard about it, just ‘cause I was curious about him, since he was visiting you and stuff. He did the same for her. Paid her hospital bills. Is still paying for stuff regarding her healthcare and making sure she has a good quality of life, I think. They say she’s doing good now.”
“That’s good at least,” you mumble, still scrolling the article.
“But… after it happened, he slumped bad. Like really bad. Like the worst slump of his career apparently. This guy’s, like, a heavy hitter, right? Up there with Judge and Trout, I’ve heard. Defensively speaking, he was still okay. Not as good as usual but… on the offense, he was even worse. This was after his debut here in the US. One of the Braves’ best seasons to date. But that season…”
Jerry shakes his head.
“I mean, I get it. I probably wouldn’t walk away unscathed but… I don’t know.”
“It’s different in Japan,” you say quietly, handing his phone back. “They’re vigilant about keeping people safe. Here… nothing happens until it’s too late. Has it happened since?”
“No. Your incident was his second one.”
“They’re not the same, though. Behind the foul line… yeah, it should be netted. But out there in the outfield — that was on me.”
“He probably still feels bad, Tee. I mean… yours was bad. You got lucky. Really lucky.”
True. Headaches have increased in frequency and sometimes you’re still sensitive to the sun. But outside of that… you’ll be okay eventually.
You knew there might be some underlying guilt, but never enough for you to reconsider where you stand.
Is he humoring you because of that? Or because you are friends?
You hope it’s because you’re friends. If it’s that first one… you don’t know. What can you do?
You try to think of it from his perspective. If your places were reversed, you’d probably feel a little bit of guilt. But he’s more than made up for it — when he didn’t even have to. He had your forgiveness before you even woke up the day after. He always had it.
“He got better, though, right?”
“Well, he accepted a trade deal with the Padres after that season. Three years here. It ended this season.”
“What?”
“How do you not know that? You guys hang out constantly!”
“The finer points of the Major League Baseball trade do not dominate our conversations!”
He throws his head back and laughs. You grin, too, shaking your head as you glance back to the computer to make sure the next song is correct. It’ll start straightaway.
“Well, don’t worry about it. Your boyfriend —“
“He isn’t my boyfriend! Mouser!”
Jerry ignores you, smiling knowingly. “Your boyfriend accepted a five-year extension. $120 million.”
“You know, on that thought…”
Janelle Monáe’s Make Me Feel starts playing.
You two share a mischievous grin.
You keep on askin’ me the same questions And second-guessin’ all my intentions Should know by the way I use my compression That you’ve got the answers to my confessions
It’s like I’m powerful with a little bit of tender An emotional sexual bender Mess me up, yeah, but no one does it better There’s nothin’ better
That’s just the way you make me feel That’s just the way you make me feel So good, so good, so real

Look, it’s all in good fun, alright?
He isn’t your boyfriend. No way. Your relationship is better now, after those boundaries were tested and are steadily improving as he opens up to you about his life but…
It’s just not possible.
Even if he will be here for the next five years… and maybe more…
No. No. Not happening. It can’t.
It’s not like you’re swearing off the possibility completely but that just seems… out of this world.
Out of the realms of your world.
Yes, he’s horribly handsome and actually kind of funny in that snarky way of his, while also having rare bouts of sensitivity and sometimes your breath catches when you see his face in the sun and your heart does a funny little thing when he looks at you but it’s…
It’s nothing.
Tumblr media
It was evening, and no longer summer. Three small fish, I don’t know what they were, huddled in the highest ripples as it came swimming in again, effortless, the whole body one gesture, one black sleeve that could fit easily around the bodies of three small fish.
Also I wanted to be able to love. And we all know how that one goes, don’t we?

Can we have a scenario with miyuki and his son and the mc wife and mother. Their son says mother is mine and kazuya just refuses and tell his son she's my wife so she's mine, and some family fluff for Kazuya <333
YESYESYEYSYS I AM FOR THIS bro everyone loves kazuno and i am here for it
father!miyuki kazuya x mother!reader
mother’s custody
“kazuno, which book do you want me to read to you tonight?” you asked your son who was looking at his mini bookshelf in your room, stacked with many fairy tales and picture books. he pulled out “snow white,” showing it to you with both of his hands. “this one.”
“snow white it is,” you smiled, picking him up from the ground. you placed him next to your husband who was already comfortable in bed, looking over a scorebook from earlier’s game.
you preened at your husband which broke his focus, “scorebooks away now, mister.” you slipped into the other side of the bed pulling the comforter over you and kazuno, slightly tucking it around his small form. miyuki closed his book and pushed his glasses up chuckling, “yes ma’am. scorebooks are now away.” you shook your head jokingly and opened the first page of the book, you and your husband cradling your son in the middle. “ready kazuno?” he nodded, leaning back a little.
“once upon a time..”
-
“and they lived happily ever after.” you breathed, finishing the story. kazuno softly clapped his hands together and pointed at prince charming. “me marry mama.”
aw.
your heart swelled, finding it so damn adorable that your son wanted to marry you. you smiled and pinched his soft cheek, and placed a kiss on his forehead. “of course! kazuno’s my own prince charming!” kazuno nodded and took your hand; the sight was just nauseatingly sweet, i mean he couldn’t hold your hand with one so he held it with two. you were practically dying.
“hey,” miyuki said, wrapping an arm around your shoulders and pulling you close. “mama’s mine. we’re already married, see?” he held up his hand and let the wedding ring glow under the light. a smug look appeared on his face, a typical teasing smirk that was a menace to society. “you can find other girl, kazuno.”
kazuno huffed and pulled you away from miyuki’s grasp. “no, mama’s mine!” he exclaimed, “she even called me prince charming. her prince charming.”
“nuh uh, she’s my wife.”
“no she’s my wife.”
kazuno started to turn red, steam coming out of his ears as miyuki laughed it off. you sweat dropped at the two, and before kazuno can get even more worked up, you held him in your arms and kissed his cheek. “kazuno’s right, i do belong to him. sorry, kazuya.” you grinned, and kazuno stuck a tongue out at his father. “mama mine.”
miyuki sighed and admitted defeat, holding his hands to his heart acting as if he’d been shot. “no..” he croaked sarcastically, “i’ve lost..” kazuno giggled and snuggled back into the space between you and miyuki, his eyes fluttering shut. “i love.. both of you..” he drifted away into a slumber and you took a deep breath, exhaling out in satisfaction.
“there’s gonna be a time where he won’t want to marry me anymore,” you said, taking off kazuno’s glasses and setting it on the bedside. “he’s growing up too fast.”
miyuki took a hold of your chin and made you face him, his face coming close. “let’s enjoy every moment, yeah?” he whispered, his lips barely brushing over yours as he spoke.
“mm,” you hummed, closing the gap between you two. when you pulled apart, a small string of saliva stretched between both of your lips, the shine luminous off of the lights in your shared room.
“goodnight, y/n.”
“goodnight.”

Title: Maybe things happen.
Chapter 3: Cooking Games (Day 2- Swap)
Characters: Miyuki Kazuya, Kuramochi Youichi, Sawamura Eijun (minor)
Relationship: Miyuki Kazuya x Kuramochi Youichi
Rating: General Audiences
Total Word Count: 2654
AO3
Event: @daiyarpwk2020
Clicking on another video he focussed in on the same face that he’d been gazing at for hours. He laughed softly at the same lame intro he’d been hearing in each video. The same dorky glasses and apron. He gulped silently at each intense look shot at the camera when concentration was required. His smile grew as each successful cook was greeted with a brilliant grin.
“Welcome back to home plate kitchen.” The man shot a smirk at the camera before continuing, “I’m your favourite catcher, Miyuki, here to share another recipe.”
Youichi barely focussed on the actual meal, simply watching the ease at which the man moved around his kitchen and the mastery of his art. He wasn’t a mess in the kitchen, but watching this chef easily switch between different styles and types of recipes each video and make successful food each time, it rankled a bit. Yet he was fascinated.
But what drew him even more was the moments of silliness that would pepper throughout the videos. When Miyuki would sometimes attempt to lift a hot pan off the stove without mitts and then whip his hand back. The incredulous look on the man’s face coupled with rapidly shoving his burning hand under cold water pulled raucous laughter out of his mouth. He especially enjoyed when Miyuki’s housemate, Sawamura, would appear in the frame to pull silly faces that wouldn’t be seen until editing. The captions insulting Sawamura were particularly amusing for him.
He had spent a couple days watching Miyuki’s videos, realistically he was binging them. It had been a lark, having seen a comment under one of his own videos about a week ago.
gamer_goose35: you know what would be great? thechefcatcher and Mochi making a video together! They have the same type of humour! Plus think of the video options!
Youichi had been curious, having not heard about “thechefcatcher” before, so he looked the other youtuber up. That led to days of listening to the same sarcastic laughter, the snarky side comments at every recipe, and gazing at the talented movements that attracted him first.
When he finally glanced at the clock on his laptop he saw that it was approaching three am. With a slightly hysterical laugh, Youichi closed the lid and placed it aside. He’d deal with his new strange obsession another time. Right now he needed to sleep. Tomorrow, well later that same day, he had plans to shoot two new videos. He needed the sleep. Getting under the covers, he tried to convince himself to fall asleep. But each time he closed his eyes, all he saw were Miyuki’s eyes blinking back at him. He spent much of the night tossing and turning, restlessly attempting to fall asleep.
--
Clicking on the email icon, Kazuya began deleting all the trash that filled his inbox. Switching between his calendar and an email from another cooking channel who reached out to him for a collab, he sent off a couple days that would fit his schedule. Switching to his social media, Kazuya sent out the usual morning tweet that his followers were expecting. Nabe had recommended that he start interacting more with his fans, and disagreeing with his manager was something Kazuya had quickly learnt wasn’t a smart decision.
@thechef_catcher: good morning. But also what constitutes a “good” morning. We’re all waking up much too early and having to go to work and slog our way through the day. So really...just morning. (6:37 AM)
There, that would keep Nabe off his back, for at least a couple days. Sliding off his bed, Kazuya winced slightly as his foot hit the ground a bit too hard. Waiting for the jarring feeling in his ankle to subside before trying to stand again, he glared down at the floor. Finally feeling up to standing up again, Kazuya moved towards his closet, changing into his usual jogging outfit. With it being the off season, he could usually find Sawamura hovering around the kitchen. Sure enough the pitcher was still there, ready for their morning run.
As normal, Kazuya put in earbuds, drowning out Sawamura’s inane chatter so early in the morning and stepped outside of their apartment. He had thrown in a small heating pad into his bag before leaving the house, in case his ankle started acting up again. Running their usual route, Kazuya let himself sink into the music and the monotonous sound of his feet pounding on the pavement. By the time they rounded back to the apartment Kazuya could feel the sweat running down his neck. With a shaky grin he nodded his head back at the street, telling Sawamura to keep going. Heading back inside, Kazuya went straight for a shower, changed into his outfit for the day, grabbed his computer and headed towards the kitchen.
Today’s video was going to be about Sanuki Udon. He had spent a couple weeks working with the local udon shop alongside the chefs to perfect his technique. He had already filmed his first failed attempts a while back, following recipes online. Setting the cameras up, he prepped the kitchen before picking up his phone. Texting Sawamura that he would be busy for the next hour or so, Kazuya got started. Slipping his branded apron over his head, he switched the camera on and began speaking.
“Ohayo everyone! Welcome back to home plate kitchen. Your friendly neighbourhood catcher is here!” He said the words with an awkward smile, hating that Sawamura had convinced him to start his videos with such a cheesy introduction. Even if it worked as his fans took to the puns and silly intro, he hated it, but he carried on.
Seven years ago Kazuya would never have considered that his days would be littered with recording himself cooking, editing videos, and becoming as unathletic and baseball oriented as he had. But another bad collision at home plate, and a shattered ankle had ended his career. Six months after he managed to walk on his ankle safely, he was still just sitting around his home and moping. It had been Sawamura’s suggestion to start the channel, something to do for fun while he figured out what to do with his career now. Kazuya had been uninterested at first, putting in very little effort and just cooking whatever came to mind. But the fact that people seemed to enjoy it and Sawamura kept crowing about how the channel kept growing made him start to give it a bit more attention. But even moreso, he started to enjoy it a bit more. There was something oddly enjoyable about just talking to a camera for a couple of hours and cooking food. And with Sawamura living with him, he wasn’t just cooking for himself.
It was kind of nice.
“Alright, with a completed dish, I think we’ve completed all nine innings, and it’s time for this video to wrap-up!” He placed the completed Sanuki udon onto the front of his counter. With the recording complete it was time for editing. Luckily with experience and time he’d managed to get better at editing. Moving back to his room with the camera SD cards he settled down at his desk. The video wouldn’t be released for another week or so, but Kazuya wanted to complete editing so that he’d have the rest of the day free. As he was fiddling with the font for the side text explaining each step he completed, he heard the extra chair in the room being dragged to sit beside him. Turning his head slightly he smirked at Sawamura who settled into the chair with a loud thump! Reaching over and ruffling the pitcher’s hair, he turned back to his computer.
“How was your run, Sawamura?”
“You missed out on the cutest dog Miyuki-senpai! It was adorable, with its tail wagging everywhere!”
He couldn’t help but laugh at how Sawamura sounded like he’d seen the cutest thing on the planet. “Ah, so you met your family member, how lovely!” The affronted look on Sawamura’s face was worth all the hits his shoulder received.
“Stupid Miyuki, you’re just sad you missed out on the dog.” Sawamura’s countenance suddenly brightened as another brilliant idea came, “this Sawamura will make sure to take a photo for next time!”
Smiling to himself, Kazuya couldn’t help the sigh that escaped his lips. Sawamura never ceased to amuse him, but even moreso, he was a bright light in his life. He was still the most eye-catching sunflower Kazuya had ever seen. And fully bloomed. “Sure...whatever you say Bakamura.”
“Idiot Miyuki....” Sawamura had switched to looking at his phone, muttering threats under his breath as he often did around Kazuya.
Out of the corner of his eye Kazuya watched as Sawamura continued scrolling on his phone, becoming comfortable in the chair. Giving his full focus back to his video, Kazuya ignored his desk partner for about thirty minutes until a loud shout made him almost jump. Turning and glaring at Sawamura, Kazuya waited impatiently for an explanation.
“Miyuki! Mochi uploaded another video! It’s a cooking video!” Sawamura’s voice was loud as ever, but laced with astonishment.
He felt the joy course through his body, excitement filling his veins at the news. Both of them had gotten hooked onto @gamermaimer’s videos a few years back. Sawamura enjoyed the commentary while Mochi played the game, but Kazuya had become enthralled with the gamer’s voice. There was something soothing about it, but he also felt something from the grainy sounds. And then, last year they’d received a face reveal, Kazuya had been floored. He hadn’t expected to find spiked green hair, eyeliner, and a lip piercing as attractive as he had.
“Give me ten minutes, I should be ready to watch.” He tried to nonchalantly speak, but he knew Sawamura was aware of his crush. The number of times Sawamura had recommended that he contact Mochi to collab was high, but every time he looked at the differences in their video styles, Kazuya hesitated. But cooking? Maybe there was a chance here. They sat down to watch the video.
“Hey maimers! Obviously this isn’t my usual set up, but I’ve been inspired. One of you folks recommended a channel for me to watch and maybe collab with.”
They both laughed when Mochi fumbled with his phone to read off the channel, but then froze when he said the name.
“Oh what was it...here we go! thechefcatcher! I’ve spent the past few days watching....”
Kazuya felt his breath catch in his throat, disbelief pouring out of him. But when he turned towards Sawamura, the same surprise was on the pitcher’s face.
What.
--
Youichi was nervous releasing the video. He had struggled through the cook, even if he had picked a fairly straightforward dish to make. Baking was not his forte though and the roof would probably always have that strange orange-coloured splotch on it from his first attempt. But embarrassing himself for a video was not a big deal, he’d done it before. It was the fact that he’d called out his new obsession, he’d mentioned the youtuber who’d been living in his dreams. The tweet he’d posted had Miyuki tagged and for a normally brash person, Youichi was feeling uneasy about that decision.
The notification that @thechef_catcher liked and retweeted his tweet gave him heart palpitations. Deciding to take the plunge, he DM-ed Miyuki.
@gamermaimer: hi
@thechef_catcher: hey
@gamermaimer: so...uh you watched my video...
@thechef_catcher: why else would I have rt your tweet?
He stared blankly at his phone. What was that? He laughed in spite of himself, hysterically.
@gamermaimer: yeah well. What did you think?
He meant about the offer of a collab at the end of the video. He meant the proposal of trying something new for both of them. What Miyuki responded with though?
@thechef_catcher: well you absolutely failed at every step so I’m amazed you managed to get any cake onto that table.
@thechef_catcher: Geez Mochi, it’s almost like you bought a replacement cake to pretend you succeeded.
Somehow he wasn’t surprised to see that Miyuki’s personality was as twisted as it was. But it took two to tango.
@gamermaimer: well, if I sucked so bad, maybe you ought to come fix me?
He waited and the reply took more time to arrive compared to the last but it still came. He anxiously tapped the message notification.
@thechef_catcher: perhaps I will.
He let out a sigh and his shoulders relaxed. Their conversation continued, figuring out dates and times that would work for both their schedules. They agreed that the first video would be with him in Miyuki’s kitchen. He asked if Sawamura would be there, and received a teasing response. So when Miyuki asked what video they would do for his channel, Youichi proffered the only realistic response.
@gamermaimer: well of course we have to play a video game.
It was only later, when he went to go follow Miyuki on twitter as well, that Youichi realized something. He shouted angrily, throwing his phone down onto the ground. Petulantly he whined to himself, “the idiot’s already following me.”
––
The day of filming was awkward. He arrived early, not by much, but early enough that it was obvious. He had already sent out the customary tweet announcing his “secret” plans for a video.
@gamermaimer: well sometimes you get lucky with your videos. Other times you meet a moron and make a stupid decision (10:34 AM)
Sawamura was there, hovering in the dining room. Fiddling with a camera setting even with Miyuki telling him to stop touching the camera every five seconds. Youichi blinked confusedly at both of them. They were fidgety and uncomfortable. Because of him?
“Hey! Hey idiots!” They both turned to him; Miyuki put down the pots he was randomly holding, Sawamura looked up from the camera. “What the hell is going on? Some explanation for your bizarre behaviour would be wonderful, please.” The last few words came out sarcastic, and he knew the look on his face matched his tone. For some reason being around both of them was easy. In the way most collabs never were; he felt at home with them. So he skipped past politeness and jumped straight into insults. “I realize that you’re both morons, but if we could at least get the video started?”
Miyuki seemingly calmed down at that, chuckling hesitantly even as he gazed at Sawamura with a lost look. But it was Sawamura seemingly snapping out of whatever funk he was in that finally set things normal. “Mochi!”
Youichi turned to face Sawamura expectantly, but the excitement seemed to have rapidly fizzled out before Sawamura exhaled deeply, you could see the air! He laughed to himself.
“Can I get a photo with you? I’ve...We’ve been watching you play for three years now!”
He hadn’t expected that. Glancing at Miyuki, Youichi was stunned to see the usually calm face turning bright red before the chef looked down at the counter. Throwing his head back, Youichi let himself laugh freely, ignoring the squawks from Sawamura. Wiping tears from the corner of his eyes, he laughed softly one more time before replying. “Sure. Sure. But only if I get an autograph from you,” he nodded at Sawamura and then softly, “and your phone number.” He stared at Miyuki, waiting for acknowledgement. Miyuki nodded stiffly, but his eyes had only shifted from the counter to glare at Sawamura.
“I don’t exactly have three years as a credential...but is 48 hours of no sleep from binging your channel good enough?” He laughed at the stunned look on Miyuki’s face. “So, what do you say....my friendly neighbourhood catcher?”
But rather than the huffy noise he expected, Miyuki still managed to surprise him. A smirk and, “well...I think you mean a maimer don’t you, Youichi?”
He grinned.
