So this image was a pain to make

all the current surviving kids in the pale city teens au!

i'm laying on the floor after a long battle with coloring. zoom in/color picks/names under the cut

separated (almost) evenly into 4 because tumblr loves to kill the quality of big images. no shading because im using it for color reference lol. beyond the main 5 (Six, Mono, RK, Pretty and RCG) there are a bunch of kids who's stories were also changed.

they're in order from oldest to youngest but there's a lot of overlap in ages. no one really knows their birthday, but they do know how many years old they are. some just feel they're probably a month or two older than the others in their year-group. Little Sister and Toddler are the youngest at 11 and 9, with everyone else being 14-17. hope that makes sense.

Finally finished the last canon character ref sheet! I really liked the little ghost kid from the comics so they get a place in my AU.

do yall ever think about bruce/batman!clone danny standing in front of his bathroom mirror after finding out he was a clone and silently tracing his face. The slope of his jaw and point of his chin. The high angle of his cheekbones and the shape of his eyes, the curve of his brow bones and the shape of his nose. The volume of his hair and the way it curls and gets fluffy when it gets too long.

His hair is black the same way a crow's wing is black. His dad's hair is black the same way a black bear's fur is black. His dad's eyes are blue like the ocean is blue. Danny's eyes are blue the same way a glacier is blue.

His dad has a square jaw and straight flat hair, and he tans and gets a face full of freckles when he's out in the sun for too long. Danny burns like a lobster and his face remains untouched. Danny has a sharp jaw and tall cheekbones, and Sam says when he's not smiling there's almost something regal about him. You would never call Jack Fenton "regal" when he's not smiling.

Sam says when he's not smiling he looks scary the same way a stone statue is. Jack Fenton when he's not smiling looks scary the same way that german shepherd staring at you across the street is.

Do you ever think he grew up wondering if he was adopted. Because of course, he has black hair and blue eyes like his dad. But having the same color doesn't make you someone's child.

Or, worse, things he's heard from the other kids and the other parents and even some of his teachers growing up; that he was the product of an affair. And that his dad was just too stupid to notice. And Danny would defend his parents until the day he died, because Jack Fenton wasn't an idiot and Maddie Fenton wasn't a cheater.

But doubt comes in with fickle tongue. his parents swear up and down that he is their child when he asks about either. That Danny just had his grandparents' features, but he was their son and they loved him.

But Danny doesn't look like either of his parents. His mom's eyes are blue like an aquamarine and Jazz's too. And they burn like lobsters in the sun too, but Jazz gets freckles on her face and so does Maddie. And as Danny grows up he doesn't bulk up or get stocky like his dad did, and when he hits puberty he doesn't shoot up like a tree like Jack Fenton did.

He stays small, and they say he's a late bloomer (and he is), or that he just has his mom's height. But he's fast and has good stamina, and some days it feels like he's built entirely different from his family. That the things they went through growing up just didn't apply to him. Jack and Maddie Fenton both had acne and breakouts when they hit puberty, and Jazz inherits it and he's seen the amount of skincare products she keeps on her side of the bathroom.

And then he hits puberty and breaks out maybe once or twice, but his skin stays clear for the most part and the problems and changes his dad went through just don't happen to him.

And the truth is worse than all of the lies.

How horrifying.

LN2

Spoon (spoon girl) : 11 years old, ginger hair, green eyes, She/her, 🇮🇪/🇺🇲, Item: spoon. Spoon is very fast & feels the need to protect everyone in her group. She's a bit sassy and rude at times often lashing out if she believes someone may endanger the rest of the group, how else would a traumatized kid react in a hell scape? She butts heads with lots of the other kids in the group but she only wants to keep them safe. Wasn't happy when West took over their little group.

Sweetz (lollipop kid): 8 years old, brown hair, brown eyes, he/him, 🇬🇧/🇺🇲, Item: Lollipop. Scared and fearful, not as fast as the other kids, often lags behind. He only really attacks when extremely frightened (as with the bullies). He felt really bad for hurting the bullies in the school because they resemble kids (whether or not they actually are) he'd never want to hurt another person.

Ghost: 12 years old, pale blonde hair, golden eyes, they/it, 🇨🇦. They're mute, using sign language to communicate. They saved a baby rat and named it phantom. It fights w/ spoon a lot saying she's very bossy. They're good at climbing.

Tyke (The toddler): 2 years old, Brown hair, brown eyes, He/Him, 🇺🇲, Item: knapsack.

Bleu (Blue overalls boy) : 6 years old, black hair, brown eyes, he/him, 🇺🇲, Item: large nail. He was in an orphanage with Mono (while in the Nowhere) he didn't escape unharmed however, he has several burn marks on his body. The kids at the orphanage were all close friends he's worried about what happened to the rest of them. He found Tyke in the forest while running from the hunter & had been trying his best to keep him safe until he found the rest of the group.

SHE'S MY FAVORITE AHHHHH

West (Sou'wester girl): 14 years old, Brown hair, blue & green eyes, She/her, 🇨🇦, Item: Sou'wester hat. The oldest kid of the group she's been running around the forests near the pale city but she never intended to become the leader of a bunch of kids she barely knew. She escaped an encounter with the hunter after trying to take food from his cabin but she escaped, losing her hat in the process. She's quite tall due to the side effects of the signal tower even though she's been able to reduce its affects while staying in the forest.

Happy LNDC anniversary everyone! Yes I know I'm like 5 days late but this took a bit longer than expected. Nonetheless this was really insightful practice with the new tablet and I'm honestly impressed with how well I was able to shade it.

Some of these designs are more headcanon-y and to accompany that I've made a little list of some headcanon/backstory to go with each character. Enjoy!

Gus

Age 11

Comes from a wealthier middle-class family from the Counties; Is a bit spoiled. 

Is also rather sheltered and naive, was easily lured into the Nowhere after only like 3 visits. 

A newer arrival to the Nowhere; Went to the school because it reminded him of being a “star pupil” back home. 

Definitely went to the same school as Noone and has heard of her through gossip with other kids and on TV, though he never partook in any actual bullying of her. 

The Ferryman took Gus on a day trip to the Fun Fair from LN3 at least once, which was part of what finally lured him into the Nowhere. 

Sebbo

Age 9

Another CPI patient with nightmare disorders, like Noone. 

Was always distrustful of the doctors and made frequent escape attempts, though she was always unsuccessful.  

Is extremely good at lockpicking/knot tying because of her efforts. 

The Ferryman offered to take her to the Nowhere to get her away from the doctors, and ofc the LN2 Hospital is where she first woke up. 

The Doctor™ would perform experiments with the transmission on captured children in an attempt to assimilate them into the Fleshvoid. This is because only adults seemed to be assimilated, and the Doctor used these experiments to see whether child assimilation was even possible, and if so whether it depended on the child’s level of determination/willpower; This is why the Doctor imprisoned Sebbo and gave her spoons to try tunneling her way out. 

Fortunately Sebbo was able to escape from the Doctor and is one of the many children responsible for the vents/crawl spaces of the Hospital having signs of habitation. Other children however were less fortunate, and were left horribly disfigured as a result of the Doctor’s failed experiments. 

The Ghost Child

Age 9

A shy and poor boy from the Counties who came to the Nowhere simply to escape his outside pressures and ended up in the Pale City. At this point he was called Oliv. 

While in the city he ended up in the seemingly empty barber shop and tried to steal some wrapped mints from the countertop; When the Barber found Oliv he attacked him with his scissors and cut off his right arm. 

Oliv escaped and migrated to the apartments at the heart of the city due to the abundance of food there. 

After being attacked he became even more reclusive and distrusting of humans; For this reason and because of his disfigurement he made his signature costume out of some scraps of bedsheet and became known as The Ghost Child. 

He began using everyday vermin like rats, moths and crows as substitute company and built an entire collection of them as seen in Chapter 4; He also lived a short distance away in that room with the mattress and blocked windows next to the elevator. 

The Vagrant Boy

Age 6 (because contrary to everyone calling him the Toddler, I refuse to believe he would be able to run and scavenge so well if he was literally goo goo gaga age)

Was born mostly blind aside from being able to make out vague colors and shapes (which is why in the comic he started taking off his blindfold when he heard the TV). 

Needless to say his caregivers didn’t care much for a “blind useless baby” and he was largely neglected, meaning he taught himself to function without sight from an incredibly early age. 

Much like Noone and her water sickness, TVB found himself not weighed down by his blindness while in the Nowhere, which is why he allowed himself to cross over, finding himself more at home surrounded by the sounds and touch of nature rather than the harsh reality of the counties. 

Never really learned to speak or dress himself due to his age and neglect. 

Coby

Age 9

Orphan from the poorest section of the Counties; Crossed into the Nowhere for those exact same reasons. 

Eventually wound up in an abandoned building in or near the Pale City that was inhabited by other orphans, where they lived in a sort of community until Mono showed up, bringing the Thinman with him. 

Due to malnutrition he is smaller and scrawnier than most other kids, and his clothes are also more damaged and ill-fitting. 

Sou

Age 10

Went to the same school as Noone before being put into a more prestigious child academy elsewhere in the Counties. 

Grew up in a wealthier household that put an immense pressure on her to excel in both academic and outdoor activities; Her desire to escape this is what prompted her to cross over into the Nowhere. 

Sou ended up in the Pale City and sought refuge in the School since it was a familiar sight to her. While there she was captured by the Bullies and tied up in their torture room, where she lost her shoes (which can be seen there in-game) and was beaten severely. 

Being familiar with knots and such she was eventually able to get free and used a bedsheet rope to escape the School, then used the door from the building next to the coastline to cross the bay(?) to the Wilderness before eventually being captured by the Hunter. 

Her mismatched outfit is a result of her scavenging items from other victims of the Hunter, like boots to cover her feet and a certain yellow hat to protect her from the rain. 

Mono

Age 10

Grew up poor and was forced to wear a lot of oversized hand-me-down clothing growing up. 

Because of this he was constantly made fun of at school, and as a result adopted a habit of using his lunch bag to cover his face. Eventually he was unable to deal with the constant harassment and was convinced to cross into the Nowhere. 

Where he got his powers from is unclear, but its similarity to the Thinman’s is enough to drive most other children away, making him just as isolated here as he was in the Counties. 

Also, contrary to his canon design I actually like him having his coat mostly or fully buttoned, at least until he first uses the TVs in chapter 4, at which point he opens it up to represent his newfound courage. 

Six

Age 9

Her past remains steeped in mystery, and that’s something I don’t really want to change in case Bandai ends up revealing her existing backstory for us (ie, confirming that Sisi as Six, as horrible as that idea sounds).

Now that I'm feeling a little more confident with drawing humans I figured it might be a good idea to do a height chart for the main kiddos in my AU. I feel like I draw them a little differently every time so hopefully this will help me be a little more consistent (and I also think I found palettes for the canon characters that I'm happy with lol)
