Can we talk about the climax of The Little Mermaid?
I would like to point another thing out that I noticed on my rewatch.
Tumblr media
The ship that Eric uses to shish-kebab Ursula IS the ship that Ariel is exploring in the beginning of the movie.
The ship that she explored instead of going to her musical celebration.
The ship that led her to go to the surface and get yelled at by her dad.
Her dad, who believes she should have let Eric drown because it would be "one less human (spineless savage harpooning fish-eater barbarians) to worry about."
Her dad, who understands at the end of the film that Ariel loves Eric, and was right to do so, because he just saw how Eric saved his daughter in the face of impossible odds and bear certain death, even though she's a mermaid.
Tumblr media
It is very important that Eric save the day, USING the ship that symbolized Ariel's belief in the beauty of the human world and willingness to sacrifice and take risks to explore it.
Because it's Eric's heroism that convinces Triton that Ariel's love is as real as her beliefs about humanity. It's no longer a silly teenage girl who's lost her senses about a boy and is too naive to make the right decisions. It's a teenage girl who believed in the possibility that not all humans are barbarians, and some are worth loving--and she was right. And Triton needed to SEE THAT.
If Ariel saves herself, all that would prove to Triton is that she can handle the consequences of her own actions. But if Eric saves Ariel, it proves to Triton that humans can be good and Ariel's choice to love one was real and true.
That is very important. And a pretty amazing way to show it, having Eric stab Ursula with the shipwreck.

Next #MerMay drawing : HallAriel! Saw the "Little Mermaid" remake last weekend, love it. I think it's equally as good as the cartoon, if not better. As much as I love the new Ariel's look, it was soooo complicated for me to draw. Enjoy!
[Image description. Halle Bailey as Ariel the Little Mermaid sitting on a rock under the sea, smiling while holding a fork. End description.]

It's just fascinating to see how Disney made mermaids in pirates of the caribbean and then. The mermaids in The Little mermaid remake.
(Obviously they're too different media's, I know that.)
But it's just..why is the Little Mermaid so DARK?? Also their tails were too busy, and ugly..and the weird..bralette tops?? In not saying they should've been shirtless or wear sea shells but they couldn't try harder?? Also. Ariels hair could've been brighter, and her wardrobe should've been BETTER.
All this to say..Disney use to put a lot more effort into their costuming for live actions (seen with Cinderalla, POTC and Malificent) and The Little mermaid had the darkest. Most boring set design in the world.
They aren't actually in the water so they couldn't make that shit brighter?? Also..her sisters look..so boring. They blend into the background.
THEYRE MERMAIDS NOT REAL FISH. MAKE THEM INTERESTING!!
Halle is GORGEOUS they could've done her some damn justice. God. Her outfits and hair were dull and not giving Disney Princess. Shameful.

Little Mermaid 2023 cramming in so much unexplained stuff ("YA HAD TA USE YER SIREN SONG", Ursula causing trouble with humans and merfolk being buildup to a reveal of her killing Ariel's mom in the novel) that was clearly the results of script cuts and them attempting to beef up the runtime:

Question for people who've seen the Little Mermaid remake!
I'll be waiting for it to come out on Disney+ but I need to know something..
How much is Flounder in it?
I'm deadly afraid of fish (don't come for me, I know it's a weird ass fear. I've held cobra constrictors with a big smile and let tarantula's walk on my hands so no, I'm not easily scared. But fish? Fish get me.)
So, not gonna lie.. Flounder scares the living shit out of me. I've seen a few clips and every time he comes on I quickly look away or try to focus somewhere else, but.. Is he in there a lot? Or am I gonna miss out the whole movie by looking away when he comes on?
Thanks in advance!

So, overall: changes were made, which I'd put on three groups (spoilers ahead):
Group one:
Tumblr media
Stuff like different mermaid sisters for each ocean, Ariel being the Caribbean one (they added a cool submarine escenario with that), the ecologist message, Ursula's abyss like design and back-story, Eric has family, the new (are they? maybe they were on the musical already) songs, good acting, Ursula kils instead of transform her victims (more dramatic display), Ariel was found by other people and therephore she meets more people on the kingdom and sees how they are. Also, it appears Ariel is not a teenager in here.
Group two:
Tumblr media
The butler is the best wingman ever; Ariel and Eric have more things to add to their chemistry than the previous movie, they both have parent's issues, they want to explore new places and cultures and they both are souvenirs hoarders. The more realistic design of the animals is still pretty expressive (I was a little worried about that, to be honest). The dancing moment on the town and worlbuilding on the land. The buttler (sorry, I don't remember the name) called Eric out for breaking Ariel's heart. Ariel vs Vanessa.
Group three:
Tumblr media
Yes, the underwater breathing bird still makes me salty. Also, Eric wasn't hypnotized by Ursula?! I know he was obsessed with the mysterious singing woman, but he went straight to propose to her when he was already in love with Ariel?! Not simply engage on a relationship with Vanessa, but literally just like that he wanted to marry her? The only good thing about that was we got the buttler to call Eric out for that. King Triton was way meaner on this version. Where is the awesome city of Atlantica? You merfolks had generations to built a city in a ecologist way, but you choose to like in caves? Ursula's lair was better than the courtroom. A banished person had better living space than the whole royal family. Triton came back from being reduced to freaking bones? Ariel learned by herself how to sail? And Ariel comeback to land and wedding are anticlimatic compared to the animated movie ones.
What I mean to say above is, if you are going to make changes, that's good, understandable and expected when you adapt a movie to a new time, but make changes that make sense or don't mess with the logic, please.
I mean, seriously, a bird that breaths underwater...XD
So I'm on my way to watch the Little Mermaid. Let's see what's it all about!
Appart of a bird who apparently can breath underwater.

Are you excitedto watch the little mermaid live action
Eh. Wasn't excited to begin with, I just liked Halle cuz shes pretty
And I saw it
It was..a movie, that is definitely gonna be loved by children.
But I personally just..thought it was okay..nothing about it impacted me at all, her being black doesn't make the movie a master piece, the best part was Eric and Ursula and of course Halles singing, she did AMAZING when she sang and God she's so gorgeous.
But otherwise..saw it when it came out, haven't thought about it until just now 🤷‍♀️
