Welcome to Revenge of the Underrated!

Some of you asked me to put a "haven't watched both" to be more fair to the more unknown movies, but I've seen other tournaments doing this and I think it limits too much who can participate in the polls. So what I decided to do is a double elimination!

What does that mean? That means a movie has to lose twice to be eliminated. In other words, there will be a sorts of losers bracket that'll be part of main bracket. I'm undecided on whether to do this for only one round or the whole bracket, as it would make the tournament very long. Do let me know if you have any opinion about it.

basically how this works is we have brackets a, b, and c. c is a tricky one, hopefully ill explain right

it’s basically a bracket and a half, and the villains in the half bracket will go across and meet in the middle, and the winner of that goes against the two villains on the bracket above

once we get to the middle two in a and b and have that vote, and once the double elimination in bracket c happens, the three villains will all go head to head… to head. it’ll be the three winners of each bracket in one final poll

Happy 16th Anniversary, the Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning

Today marks the 16th Anniversary for

The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning, the final film of The Little Mermaid cartoon franchise.

Already it had been 16 years where we got to see how Ariel's Beginning started before the first film.

Queen Athena, King Triton's wife and Ariel's mother was dead when the human pirates took some of the merfolk's musical instruments, and because of that Triton banned music from the kingdom. After that, he had a hatred of humans ever since.

We also got to see Ariel's sisters; Attina (the eldest), Alana (the glamorous one), Adella (the boy-crazy), Aquata (the middle child who's also obsessive-complusive and a terrible dancer), Arista (the fun-loving and music-playing one who always borrows Aquata's stuff), and Andrina (the sassy wisecracker) get some screen time, and the first film we don't see Ursula the Sea Witch with Marina taking that role trying to be Triton's attache.

We all see how Ariel first met with Flounder and she and her sisters learn that Sebastian was making a secret club playing music. Thanks to Ariel, music was welcomed back to the kingdom.

It is also the last time we got to hear Samuel E. Wright's voice as Sebastian before he died. May he rest in peace. He will always be our best Sebastian since the first movie, and he made a good Mufasa in The Lion King Broadway Musical.

#1 Where Does It Start?

Originally, I was going to write this as a book. But really, would anyone buy it? Hell, would anyone want to publish it!? Who the hell am I? No, if this information is going to be seen by anyone then a blog is probably the way to go. The focus here is going to be all over the place, since for a while I’ll be catching you up to where I currently am, which is constantly changing day by day. I have a whole life I’ve lived up until today and it has, for better or worse, led me here. So let’s start at the beginning… ugh… 😞😖🤦🏻‍♀️

I was born *Deadname* Staats in Salem, Oregon in the summer and lived there until I was 8. I was originally supposed to be William Thomas Staats III and always kind of liked the idea of being a “third”, but my grandmother didn’t like the idea of her first (and at the time, potentially only) grandchild to be named after her ex-husband (silly, she’d end up having 9 biological grandchildren, so she really didn’t have to worry, one of whom is named after her ex and another one is named after her! But, I get it). So *Deadname* was chosen to appease her. Either way it’s not like the name stuck around so now it’s a moot point. While I was still living in Oregon a few things happened that affected me greatly. First, Disney’s The Little Mermaid released on November 17th, 1989, I was 6.

I fell in love with that movie. A fun fact you may or may not know, but the original The Little Mermaid story by Hans Christian Andersen is widely considered a trans allegory, and some of those aspects transfer over to Disney’s version. Some say Ariel wanted to be human because she met Prince Eric, but remember, she sang “Part of Your World” before she ever laid eyes on his ship. She knows what she wants inside and aspires to it, regardless of how impossible it may seem. In the original she want’s to be human because mermaids don’t have a soul, the only way to become human, and therefore get a soul, is to get a human to fall in love with you. She feels incomplete in the way she was born and takes steps to correct that. And it hurts her to do it. A lot. About the time he wrote the story, Andersen himself had written a love letter to one Edvard Collin saying his love for him was like that of a woman’s, that he felt like a woman around him.

Andersen has long been known to have been a gay author but the fact that what-we-would-now-call-“trans”-identities were so looked down upon in the early to mid 19th century may have gone a long way to hide the fact that in a kinder and more understanding world, they might have been able to be who they really were. Unfortunately there’s no concrete way of proving this but through historic introspection the clues are there. Regardless of the authors intentions (a phenomenon known as the death of the author), I always identified with Ariel and even when playing on the playground with friends, we would sing the songs and I would always sing Ariel’s lines as best and proudly as I could. It was around this time I started realizing something was “different” about me. I’m not blaming The Little Mermaid for making me trans or anything, that would be asinine. No, I’m blaming the backlash from liking The Little Mermaid for opening my eyes to gender stereotyping. People would make fun of me for liking the movie because “it’s for girls”. At 6 years old, when we start interacting with people at a little higher mental capacity than wanting to play with a plastic telephone with moving eyes, we tend to pick up on social cues that differentiate things, such as race, economic standing, and yes, even gender.

When someone makes fun of you for something like that, especially at that age, you start avoiding things on reaction because you just don’t want to deal with the hate. Despite often enjoying things that were “for girls” I’d vehemently avoid them for fear of ridicule. I even had to explain to friends who found out that I regularly watched reruns of She-Ra: Princess of Power that the reason was because if I’m going to watch someone go through a magic transformation that makes them scantily clad, I’d rather watch a woman than a man. I also got asked by my little brother years later,

“How come you always pick the female character when playing a video game?” and my answer was a variation of the same.

“If I’m going to stare at a character’s ass for hours on end I want to stare at a woman’s,” or in the case of fighting games, “The female characters tend to jump higher and move quicker even if they don’t hit as hard.”

These explanations seemed to work well enough and I thought I was so clever for coming up with them, only to find out years later that (hyperbolically) every trans woman has used these excuses. I guess the signs were there from the beginning. I tell people now, that when I realized I was different it was the late ‘80s - early ‘90s and there was no internet or readily available literature for me to consume to learn about any of this. I just thought there was something very, very wrong with me, and I staunchly held that belief for most of my life. I wouldn’t learn until years later that people who had come forward and tried to research and start movements to express these feelings and expressions were usually and effectively quieted by those with closed minds and tiny hearts. Feel free to look up the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Germany and its subsequent destruction by the Nazi’s in the ‘30s for more information on something like that. No, I had a choice to make when I first started feeling different; the smart option, or the safe option. Be myself and to hell with whatever anyone else says, or hide myself and be safe from the ire of everyone around me... I chose to be safe because, y’know, I was 6.

I did love my home town, mostly because I didn’t know anything else. But it was clean and green and I knew people there. My parents owned a pizza parlor there called “Pinocchio’s Pizza”, I really enjoyed hanging out there, mostly because I was a kid and not an employee. But I got to learn how to make good pizza, so that’s something. My favorite thing to do was to sneak shredded cheese from the toppings bar. It was so good.

One of my favorite places to go was an amusement park just outside the city limits called “The Enchanted Forest”. It’s a seasonal fairy tale themed park that’s fun for a child. My favorite part was the White Rabbit’s rabbit hole, you could crawl through it. Inside were little vignettes you could look into and see scenes from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (another favorite of mine), the one I specifically remember was depicting the scene when she’s falling down the rabbit hole. Mind you, this was a while ago in the 80’s, it was wasn’t a digital screen or anything, it was a lenticular picture.

I even started learning magic tricks at an early age. I didn’t think about wanting to be a magician yet, but I picked up a few because I thought they were cool and I wanted to know more things. It was so much fun showing off to my friends. One of the first tricks I ever learned was from Mr. Wizard early one morning before going to school. That day I was astonishing my friends with the 21 card trick, probably the first card trick every magician learns and one of the most over played. By now it’s become a joke in the magic community. I didn’t get into magic as a career goal until much later, we’ll get there.

The other really big thing that happened in Oregon was I joined the Boy Scouts of America program. That had a long lasting and profound effect on me. But I’ll get into that and the rest of my life in Oregon next time. Until then, thank you for reading. PEACE!

Lucas was starting to take a liking to the Greek Goddess of Adventure, that he couldn't help himself but latch onto her back, causing Xandra to carry him. But she allowed this as she was taking a liking to him as much as me when I visited.
