Isn’t Hal jordan life just filled with propaganda? Grew up in a military household, joined the usaf, was a pilot for Ferris air(believe they tests military aircraft) and then joined the gl corps that’s basically just military propaganda in itself

I don’t really think myself qualified to speak on this, but I’ve been thinking about this ask since I saw it.

To be fair, I think it could be argued that while Hal’s life is chock-full of military service, sometimes it can be interpreted as deconstruction rather than propaganda--although the hotshot Top Gun way he’s written post-Johns can totally feel propagandistic at times.

Like, look at this variant cover. I feel more patriotic already.

Post-Johns, Hal’s father Martin Jordan was portrayed more positively than he had been previously, (notably, that he wasn’t either physically abusive or particularly dismissive of Hal versus his brothers). Another thing: Emerald Dawn suggests--and it is also emphasized in Green Lantern: Sleepers book three--that Martin purposefully did not eject from the test plane because he would rather die a pilot than eject, leaving his wife a widow and his three sons orphans. So, arguably, the Top Gun bravado that Hal is so infamous for now, has been criticized from the beginning of Hal’s life.

And the possibly military propaganda of the Green Lantern Corps is something I’ve been thinking about since I became a GL fan. It’s either a highly militarized police force or a policing military force, which...does not feel good either way. And where do the Guardians get the authority to police the universe anyway? Power should come to rulers from those they rule, right?

Honestly, I kinda liked that the Corps was shown as corrupt for a while in iirc Geoff Johns’ run, with the Guardians allowing lethal force against the Sinestro Corps and later any enemy of the Corps, and then altogether scheming to get rid of the Corps from the inside out? I thought it was really, really interesting. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, right? We kinda saw that with Sinestro, and with Parallax, etc.

But, because this is superhero comics and we tend to want our superheroes to be good guys, I do think about possible ways the Corps can be characterized as less of a police force. For one thing, I think we should get rid of the Guardians and reinstate John Stewart as Corps leader. The Guardians literally cause, like, half of the Corps’ problems, either directly or indirectly. For another thing, I would love for the Corps to perhaps be more akin to firefighters than police, if that makes sense? Put more emphasis on saving people from natural disasters or, like, space pirates, or traffickers, I don’t know. 

I’ve heard it said that the Corps could just be a really big team of superheroes instead of a military, but I do think if we get rid of the military aspect entirely, we’re...kinda losing out on some of the aesthetic appeal? And, yeah, I know I know, the whole “you are not immune to propaganda” meme. Military is all about discipline (at least, the ideal of it), and the willpower of a Green Lantern is very closely related to discipline.

So...this answer got out of hand. Yeah Hal cannot catch a break, sorry buddy.

"Soundwave is the funniest fucking character in transformers because he's literally the straight man in every situation he's in with the decepticons, because all of them are absolutely incompetent at their job due to them being too focused on infighting. When Megatron died in FOC Soundwave was the one who literally put him back together and by extension, fucked everything over for everyone else because in this specific continuity Megatron just happened to be addicted to space meth.

However it can be so easy to see Soundwave as emotionless because of his straight-man role and his monotone speaking patterns, but Soundwave has plenty of emotions that he displays throughout the years, most notably being when he's dealing with the cassettes (aka his children), and can range from being soft-spoken with them, to full-out enabling their violent tendencies and letting them go ham at beating the shit out of teammates (shout out to that one g1 clip where Soundwave tries to hold back his kids for like a single second before saying "fuck it" and letting them go for the eyes).

Even outside of the cassettes though, he's very expressive in his own way. In fact, he's the KING of pettiness and sass when he wants to be. He literally plays his own supervillain music when walking the halls, he's not above insulting the other deceptions when their arguments are bullshit to him, even when faced with the destruction of the world he was like "nah" until he saw his boyfriend getting injured and went "REAL SHIT" (there's literally memes about this it's so funny). Speaking of friends, he actually has a lot of interesting dynamics with the people around him, especially when it comes to the decepticon high command. He's described as Megatron's most trusted advisor, he's somewhat amicable with Starscream (who's his own brand of frustration), and he and Shockwave even seem to get along pretty well (to the point they have a biologically fucked up tube son together?? It's been years since I've watched Siege but I swear that was what lead to Soundblaster), and did I mention he's gay? I'm pretty sure he and Cosmos are in a relationship together in the IDW comics or at least have a mutual attraction, it's cute.

Also speaking of IDW Soundwave: he likes elephants. They're his favourite animal and he loves them to the point where after he died in the comics, his kids specifically started targeting elephant poachers because they knew Soundwave would want that.

Have I mentioned he has a cat dad in the IDW comics. Like his dad is a literal robot cat that found him when he was having a sensory overload in the middle of the streets. Have these panels from when his dad died and he wasn't even there to see it! He just knew 💖

And have I mentioned he's met Fluttershy? Because he canonically met Fluttershy and let his cassettes play with her (while DELAYING HIS MISSION. THAT'S HUGE IN SOUNDWAVE LANGUAGE.)

the fact that the algorithm was developed and is completely controlled by a foreign adversary who won't let anyone see how the sausage is made, yet it dominates so much of the US's cultural landscape, is a fucking problem. the general populace of the US has become so mindfucked by malicious foreign agents via propaganda and misinformation in the past ten years that any attempt to crack down on it is welcome in my book.

Like many things from that specific corner of philosophy, it uses benign words in a very malicious way, and it comes not from a literal place, but an ideological one.

Like lego blocks that attach to it to give context to the words, it's said by the sort of people that very vehemently believe that any thought you have in your head only exists because someone else with more creative power or charisma put it there, like writing their name on a monolith. That you, you plebian shit, you rube, you little person, you NPC, are incapable of showing some backbone or differentiating between reality and fiction unless the culture around you dictates to you what is real or not.

They believe sexuality is not rooted in biology, but in culture, and that heteronormativity is a culture or tradition, not just the biological reality of how humans behave unless they're specifically the ones that do not function that way.

They have a very nurture view of how what you think and feel is formed and where it comes from, and congruent with those beliefs, believe they can make you think and feel and act in ways contrary to that if they can just surround you with enough messages that inundate you with their opinions and thoughts. It's just a matter of what values are "right."

When they say, "You are not immune to propaganda," they're not saying, "be wary of untrue things, because people with really shitty views and values would love for you to believe falsehoods to be true and act on them." They're saying, "Messages that are contrary to the ones we want you to think, are capable of turning you into a monster, just by the fact they exist, you're exposed to them, and there's nothing forcefully interpreting reality for you to tell you the proper way to think."

That's why they carefully chose to title "Critical Theory", the phenomenon of applying Marxist nonsense and polyloguery, as Critical Thinking. So you can't use the terms critical thinking and thinking critically without some smug assed jerk going, "Thank you for agreeing with me. :^) We should think critically and apply critical lenses."

And that's the beauty about constructing their statements by using seemingly benign strings of words, even true things. Because, if you use the literal definition of all those words, it's true. No one is entirely immune to propaganda, because no one can know and verify everything is true, especially things that which are subjective, or so far removed from what is identifiable by the layman that not even the most devoted team of scientists and most sensitive of instruments have conclusive, objectively derived proof for statements of true and false. Because they take statements like, "You are not immune to propaganda," and recontextualize them. Then treat their special context as if it's the one that is synonymous, true and as real as the literary definition they're talking about.

When called out on it, they hide behind the literary definition like a shield, while attacking with the recontextualization like a speartip, making it simultaneously whichever is most convenient, enjoying the benefits of both while not being the literary definition.

And that is why when people dismiss the hard left as incapable of memeing, I think it's the most detrimental way to think of them. Because they DO make memes like this. They just dip into the dark side of psychology and abuse of how humans communicate to hide these metaphoric devils in the details and glibness to never be wrong and make proper argument dishonest and impossible.

Also, it's why they lost their shit about when the reactionary response using this logic and method of containing statements in benign language, "It's OK to be white." Because the statement represented two things.

The first thing it represented was that it used their logic. That means to understand and think about the concept of what this statement is and means and its relationship with words and communication, you can apply this to things like, "You are not immune to propaganda," and, "Black Lives Matter." This threatens the unspoken part to come out, out loud. They don't want that to be status quo, they want it to be something understood but never verbalized or seen for what it is, by itself. It's Okay To Be White threatens this by drawing attention to the phenomenon.

The second thing "It's OK to be white" represented, was it's an objectively fine statement. If you take issue with the idea being white is okay, that's a statement about you. You don't like white people if you think their existence is not OK- therefore, wrong. And if you disagree with such a benign, milquetoast statement, suddenly you have to state a reason for why you find it so disagreeable. YOU have to come out and argue against why being white is acceptable. The onus falls on you, not other people, to dissuade and argue such a statement is unacceptable and somehow offensive. You have to list the reasons, you have to stand by it. You have to reveal yourself to scrutiny, and what you think and believe, rather than hide and let what you think and feel and how you arrived at that conclusion be unknown.

Now, if you know the sentiment behind it, you know it was constructed SPECIFICALLY to make people react to it with raised hackles and then go on tangents about how it's a "white supremacist dog whistle." When, it really isn't. But making such a statement, you reveal that you view all people that don't see being a white person as bad or evil, are therefore white supremacists. So even calling attention to the words between the lines, you reveal something about yourself. You cannot smear people that say, "It's okay to be white" as white supremacists, ubiquitously. It's an objectively true statement, and even if you try to emphasize what's between the lines as things said by white supremacists, it doesn't make it wrong. It's a linguistic and philosophical caltrop you just have to deal with without commentary, or step on it and try to remove it and squeal in pain. There's no in between.

And they hate the dissent. They hate that they have to expose themselves in order to dissuade people from making such statements that they try and make in omission and affirm the humanity and validity of white people, which DIRECTLY contradicts the derivative sentiments of other statements, and they hate that it uses the language smithing methods they use to argue in bad faith. It represents so much of a risk of people understanding the verbal and cultural cage they're in with no way of sloughing it off due to ignorance.

It's honestly a fascinating, if coldblooded, approach to human communication. And when you start to realize this is a genuine tool other human beings use to control the comprehension and interpretation of information while they pretend to give a shit about you or be saying nothing inflammatory at all, you better understand warning signs. Not unlike when you first learned about the concept of lying.

@User #4 Im an American. It took me approximately 8-10 years to learn all the bullshit. Took me about 6 to unlearn it. Now at 21 I can safely say that it wasn't actually that hard.

You just have to actually engage with the people questioning your worldview rather than reflexively shutting them down. Read some books maybe, that usually helps.

Friendly reminder to pay attention to how people are backing up their claims when talking about current events. Do they have sources? Are the sources reliable? Are they using an anecdote? Do you have any way to check if they're making up a fictional story to prove their point? Have they given anything that could be used to externally verify the truth of their statements?

I've just been scrolling through some old accounts I used to follow before my opinions evolved and oooooh boy are they totally bullshitting their way through everything. I found a post that I 100% would have reblogged about a year and a half ago that was literally:

Jokes like this have no critique of the actual reasons not to like either of the two USA presidential primary candidates, and instead focus on the candidates disabilities (and age) that have nothing to do with why they’re actually unfit to lead a country. People with incontinence who see this will only read it as “incontinent = horrible person”. People without incontinence will likely laugh, and further deepen their ableism.

There’s a long list of reasons to actually have issue with the candidates, many people don’t know what makes these politicians so horrible.

“It’s just a meme” Memes, especially political memes, have been used for propaganda campaigns since their inception. You are not immune to this. Be critical of politicians, with valid reasons to criticize them.

It IS ableist to laugh at politicians displaying symptoms of disorder.

It IS ableist to say that them becoming disabled is punishment for being shitty.

It IS ableist to say that a politician becoming disabled is a reason they shouldn’t be in office.

Those politicians are shitty. That’s it. You don’t have to being disability into it. Disability isn’t a punishment for being shitty. Disability isn’t the reason they shouldn’t be in office.

Also, that politician isn’t who sees you laughing at them for being visibly disabled— it’s your disabled community members who do.

Tbh, I hate most politicians. But them being disabled, fat, etc. isn’t why I hate them. I don’t need to talk about it at all actually. You can point out egregious human rights violations and abuses without ever mentioning them being disabled.
