āShould I use InDesign to lay out my books?ā - A Passionate Guide
Ok, if you are like me, you recently stumbled upon @armoredsuperheavyāās brilliant blog about bookbinding and fanfiction, and now you are excited to throw yourself head-first into bookbinding.
This also means that you are about to invest a fair amount of time into figuring out how exactly to lay out books. What you end up getting comfortable with will most likely be what you end up using long term, so it is worthwhile giving it some thought. The question really comes down to this: who's name will you be cursing for the foreseeable future? Adobe? Or Microsoft?
Full disclosure: I only started using InDesign because I was forced to. I worked as an editor at a newspaper, and that was what we used. The beginning was hell. I wonāt sugar coat it, it sucks. In the end it was worth it. Once you figure it out, InDesignās potential far outstrips Microsoft Word (in my opinion).
That encouragement means very little when you open this treacherous program for the first time and see THIS:
āWhat?! I will literally give you $100 if you guess what all the buttons on the left are for. How the fuck do I make the margins disappear!?ā
So, if using InDesign means figuring out what at least one third of the tools on the left are for, lets talk pros and cons.
Letās get the cons out of the way.
It is expensive. Adobe is not fucking around. This puppy costs 20 bucks a month (Canadian) to RENT. If this is out of your price range, do you still have options? Yes. Do they range in legality? Also yes. I think I could potentially get in trouble for telling you to find your friendly neighborhood torrenting site and steal this software. I will say, outright, that no one should steal software ever. Got it? I would be very upset if someone were to message me for specifics. As you naturally wish to be law-abiding, there is also the quasi-legal option of repeating the 14-day free trial. My friend works at a professional print studio in Russia, and this is the tactic they use: every 14 days they uninstall all of the software from all of the computers, and reinstall it with a new trial. Every 14 days! At a professional operation! My friend hates working there.
It is not initially intuitive. Iāve covered this, but it bears repeating because it is a serious hurdle. Keep in mind, that with time, InDesign becomes more helpful than other software. Now when I use Word I find myself reaching for keyboard shortcuts automatically, and feeling bereft at the lack of my favorite tools. Nonetheless, expect a time commitment up front learning how to harness this glorious and confusing computer program.
It can run kinda slowly, depending on your computer. Up until two months ago, I had the worldās most precarious laptop. I bought it for $200 in 2015. It once took half an hour to restart. Inexplicably, when it got stressed, it would switch to Spanish. It was literally and figuratively falling apart. And yet, it ran InDesign. Granted, it worked slowly. If I asked it to process too many images at once it would panic (again with the Spanish), but for the most part, it worked. If you have a slow computer and are patient, then InDesign will probably work fine on your computer. If you are not willing to suffer, stick to Word.
You will also need Photoshop (sometimes). Part of what makes InDesign glorious is that it is professional software that is designed specifically to work with print and anything text-heavy. I love that about it. It even manages to do some handy things with images! But, inevitably, you will need to learn some Photoshop to punch up your graphics. I have, admittedly, only learned the bare minimum Photoshop in order to feed my InDesign addiction. It was a pain in the butt. For example, inexplicably, Adobe has not standardized keyboard shortcuts across the suite. As with InDesign, now that Iāve learned the tricks, I adore it. But you should go into this knowing that with Adobe, the fun never ends.
Printing signatures is the WORST. Adobe, please explain to me, in front of God and everyone, why the hell you would make this software specifically for laying out books etc. and not include a method of printing signatures?! Iām livid. This is absolutely where Word wins the day. It is almost worth using Word just to print the signatures so nicely and easily. Iām not kidding. Meāa person who has used InDesign professionallyāalmost wanted to switch software entirely just because of this. Hands down, InDesignās biggest goof. Despite this crime against bookbinders everywhere, you have options. You can export your design to a PDF and literally print each signature separately (I am fucking livid) or you can complain enough to your friends that they offer to buy you a lovely program called BookletCreator for your birthday. It costs $20 bucks USD and it was worth every penny. However, Adobe, FOR THE AMOUNT THAT YOU CHARGE FOR YOUR PROGRAM, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PURCHASE ANY ADDITIONAL SOFTWARE IN ORDER TO PRINT MY BOOK. Did I mention that I am livid?!
But InDesign must be worth something, right?! Otherwise why would I be writing a long post encouraging people to use it? Letās talk pros:
The horsepower on this baby will blow your mind. Forget what I just said about printing signatures; imagine using software that was literally made for this. You wanna do a thing? InDesign has got you. Are you a perfectionist? This software was designed by people as pedantic and obsessive as yourself. It gets you. Dream it, google how to do it, and InDesign will deliver. This is really the main reason to use InDesign; it is the professional standard for a reason.
There are so SO many resources available to help you learn. Almost everything Iāve learned about InDesign I learned from Google or YouTube. Honestly, if you have a question, I promise that other people have already asked and answered it. The advantage is that because this software is specifically for laying out books, there is lots of information available specifically about how to do what you want to do. (This may also be true for Word, but Iāll be honest, I only used Word for a book layout once, so I canāt say for certain either way.)
Once you figure it out, InDesign will give you back hours of your life. Things like master page spreads, clipping paths, tint, the eyedropper tool, and the one-hundred-percent adjustable text are just... lifesavers. My experience with Word is limited, so my frustration using it was probably due to my own ineptitude, but honestly, when putting together my thesis, the tears I cried trying to get page numbers to format correctly were some of the most bitter text-related tears I have ever shed. I can take care of the whole operation in InDesign in a matter of minutes. Hours. Of. My. Life. Saved.
This is an actual marketable skill. Ok, bear with me here. I have used InDesign for every single job I have had since I worked at the newspaper. That includes working as a bookkeeper and a kindergarten teacher. Hell, I even made my resume to get those jobs in InDesign. There is no job that I forsee in my future that doesnāt include some form of text-based design. Even when my work has absolutely nothing to do with layout (see: kindergarten teacher) I still found some way to use it. My previous boss was actually so thrilled about my InDesign skills that she had me run a 101 seminar for the other employees. (Did any of them end up using it? I suspect not. Did they look at me strangely for being so enthusiastic about design software? Absolutely.) Iāve even managed to use InDesign to branch out from freelance editing to take on design projects as well. In short: if you learn how to use InDesign, put in on your resume. You will be surprised at how much mileage you get out of it.
With Adobe, the fun never ends. I know I joked about it before, but really, I love seeing what this program has in store for me next. For example, thanks to bookbinding, I discovered that InDesign will do a lot of things that I had previously assumed were the domain of Word, such as spell check. I literally stumbled onto a measuring tool today that I wish existed irl to help me glue my covers together. Part of the beauty of this software being so intricate is that there is always something new you can do. I love learning how to harness a new feature, and then watch my design improve over time. Using this program you really get the feeling that the sky is the limit. Look, just the fact that Iāve now resorted to saccharine platitudes about computer software tells you that InDesign is remarkable. Considering that this program has made me suffer so significantly, I have either seen the face of God, or I have Stockholm syndrome. Take your pick.
TL;DR, at long last:
How complicated would you like to go? Either way, for bookbinding youāve got to learn to use software in a new way.
Do you just want to get your book laid out reliably with little fuss? Word is for you! Are you interested in delving into the details? Do you have the patience of a saint? Try InDesign!
Both work. Both are good. But you can pry InDesign from my cold dead hands because I adore it.
#Honestly#No shame towards Word or anyone that uses it seriously#Like I said I have little experience actually using it for laying out books#But InDesign is very good.#Bookbinding#fic#fic binding#If people want I can start putting together tutorials about how to do all of this stuff#And all of y'all can learn from my mistakes and hopefully learn faster than I did.#ŠŠ½Ń ŠµŃŃŃ ŃŃŠ¾ Š½ŠøŠ±ŃŠ“Ń Š·Š“ŠµŃŃ ŠæŃŠ¾ ŃŠµŠ±Ń#Š·Š°Š¼ŠµŃŠøŃŃ?#InDesign

Dark Cybertron Chapter 2: Going from Zero to Antichrist Real Quick
Bumblebee and his camp buddies are trying to figure out what to do with the Titan who just popped out of the ground like a prairie dog, as the sky looks like a Lisa Frank notebook thanks to the portal to the Dead Universe. Itās honestly very nice, we should should get more pretty apocalypses like this.
Bumblebee starts throwing out orders at everyone, much to Slagās chagrin. When Slag brings up the point that they probably canāt do much of anything to a guy roughly a hundred times bigger than they are, Bumblebee tells him to shut up and do as heās told.
Yeah, I had about the same reaction, Slag.
So the Dinobots do their thing. Swoop, who I think is the only guy here who can fly, goes up to see what the Titanās doing. Itās not much, other than looking really upset. Oh no, what if heās afraid of heights? Poor guy.
Even if the Titan isnāt moving, the mere presence of the thing is jamming signals, which is kind of an issue. Ironhideās ready to shoot it in the foot, and Arcee will help, because sheās a team player now. Bumblebee has a minor crisis over whether this is the same Titan that told Starscream he was a prophesied son of a gun, but Prowl doesnāt seem to think that it is.
Prowl, who has been suffering from short-term memory lapses over the last several months or so because a bug-man was controlling his mind.
Yeah, letās maybe take his opinion on the matter with a grain of salt, even if he is right.
Over at the Lost Light, Orion Pax is visiting Brainstormās workshop, where everyoneās favorite science man is admitting to having studied the Dead Universeās effects on the living and interviewing people who had been to the area.
Man, I sure hope that guy signed a waiver, otherwise Brainstormās going to be in a spot of trouble.
Then we get a quick rundown of what the Dead Universe is: an omnicognizant parallel universe that functions on fundamental principles that differ from our own and wants you to die. So, obviously not a place you would want to go to. Still, we gotta, because thatās where the plot is the Dead Universe is gonna vore Cybertron if we donāt.
Brainstorm agrees to cook something up to make the trip through the Gorlam Prime portal easier.
Back on Cybertron, the Titan looms in the distance as we check in on an oddly pristine-looking Iacon. Rattrap tells Starscream to come out of the closet, because the Titan still hasnāt moved and doesnāt seem like itās going to anytime soon. Starscream does come out, but itās with his arms full of weapons of Autobot design that he appropriated from the ruins of Kimia, because he doesnāt trust that Titan to not start some shit. Rattrap suggests that they maybe get a second opinion before they start murdering people for standing in a barren field.
Back on the Lost Light, thereās a little shindig going down at Swerveās, everyone staring down the table where Optimus, Rodimus, and Ultra Magnus are seated. Swerve takes the opportunity to do what everyone else is probably really wanting to, and snaps a few photos of them for his scrapbook. As soon as heās done, we get to the Emotions portion of our issue.
Rodimus is letting himself be vulnerable in front of the man he idolizes, and I think thatās very brave of him.
Nobodyās feeling super great about the situation theyāve been presented with, but there isnāt a lot that can be done about it now. Just gotta work with what they got. Rodimus asks Optimus how he feels about Starscream being elected leader of Cybertron.
But I thought that freedom was the right of all sentient beings? You know, like the freedom of choice in our government officials, even if they arenāt the best option we could possibly have, because at least theyāre better than the guy who had bombs planted in peopleās heads for crowd control purposes? Are you saying that it only counted when the concept of freedom could be manipulated so you could go kick Megatronās ass, and that actual freedom of choice doesnāt jive with your personal sensibilities as much as youād like everyone to think it does? No wonder youāre going to try to overthrow the entire Earthās government system to get humanity annexed into Cybertronās bullshit in a few yearsā time.
But perhaps this Starscream thing is actually the work of Megatron! What will Orion do then?
ā¦I mean, do I even have to say it?
ORION, THATāS GAY.
And I thought weād already figured out what to do with Megatron back in āChaos Theoryā, where you spent three issues waffling on the subject until the man himself told you to execute him, because even he was sick of your crisis of self. The only reason you didnāt get to act on it was because Megatron disappeared after Vector Sigma blew up and then you fucked off into space without even bothering to check if he was actually dead.
But enough of Orion promising to kill/kiss Megatron, itās time to see what Brainstormās cooked up. Itās not much, but to be fair, heās only had a few hours to pull something together- our shipās genius has made a few forcefield generators, using nothing more than some forcefield generators and juice he squeezed out of a bug. Science truly is amazing.
And I bet Trailcutter hates this invention too, for multiple reasons this time!
Cyclonus, who is looking especially purple today, agrees to join the excursion to the Dead Universe, even though itās pretty clear he really, really doesnāt want to. Hardhead seems in better spirits than our resident space jet, though maybe thatās just bravado macho-man bullshitting on his part.
With our team put together, itās time to jump out of the spaceship and into a place that quite literally wants them dead. But first Rodimus has a little chat with Ultra Magnus about his feelings. A lot of sharing this issue.
Magnus doesnāt feel fit to be in charge while Rodimus goes off to save the day and maybe die, because he doesnāt have that special something that makes a leader a leader. Charisma? The ability to think on your feet? The ability to see people as people and not numbers? Not having people know youāre actually a much smaller man running around in an Ultra Magnus suit? Whatever it is, Rodimus seems to think that itās trumped by a mysterious something in his hand, and that Magnus will do just fine.
While Team -Imus goes into the murder reality, Magnus and the Lost Light will be going off to find Jhiaxus, because they need something to do while our protagonist and his absentee father go on their own adventure.
Back on Cybertron, Starscreamās visiting prison, and wants to talk to a very good boy without the guards overhearing. Jazz makes a very vague threat about what will happen if any harm comes to the prisoner, then steps away.
Letās talk about how to sell toys for a second.
This issue of āDark Cybertronā had a cover featuring Scoop, the very good boy Iāve mentioned before, because it was paired off with his Generations toy. We know from reading RID that Scoop is the leader of a group called the Construction Patrol, and he likes to help simply for the sake of helping. Sounds like a nice, if generic, character. How is this issue going to introduce people to him? Will he bust out of prison to save the day? Fight evil through heroic sacrifice? Do anything besides talk?
No, heās going to tell Starscream heās a herald of death that was foretold in the robot bible.
Yeah, thatāll move some fucking product!
This isnāt even the most batshit thing Scoopās going to pull in this event, but it is what they decided to put in the issue that āfeaturesā him.
Over with Shockwave, weāre treated to some renewed friendships, as Nova Prime and Galvatron reveal that they donāt hate each other after all, but have a mutual respect based in subjugating those weaker than them.
Iām guessing this is a contrast to their previous relationship dynamic in older publications, but Iām not going back to comb through the likes of Heart of Darkness to check, because it really doesnāt matter.
Thereās a bit of a snag in Shockwaveās plan to bring Galvatron and Nova Prime back to the Not-Dead Universe, as the space bridge in the Titan burnt up when it got there. Gee, that sucks. I guess all those āPreludeā issues about getting the Titan from Gorlam Prime were sort of a waste of time, werenāt they? Love it when Iām told I wasted my time reading motherfucking Ramondelli issues.
Speaking of Ramondelli, itās Dead Universe time.
Sigh. Hello, public domain pictures of space on the overlay layer option in Photoshop. Itās nice to see you.
No, it isnāt. I lied.
Iām sorry, public domain pictures of space on the overlay layer option in Photoshop, this isnāt your fault.
So weāre here in the Dead Universe, and itās looking pretty wild and crazy, though the characters are likely thinking this for a completely different reason than we are as readers. It turns out, the Dead Universeā¦ is dying.
ā¦MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM THATāS SOME GOOD WRITINā RIGHT THERE
Also, Cyclonus has disappeared, not that anyone actually gives a shit, because theyāre too busy dealing with the giant space leeches that just showed the hell up. Dang, whyās that happening?
ā¦That only happens as a form of population control, or if the young in question are sickly and have a low chance of survival, not just because the mama rabbit got a bit peckish between lunch and dinner, you stupid fucking robot.
Half of this writing team won awards a couple years after this was published, I want you to remember that.
They fight the cyberwraiths for a bit, things look like theyāre getting dicey, then suddenly they fuck off as Cyclonus shows up, probably fresh off the end of a goddamned panic attack because heās back in the Dead Universe. Then he proceeds to vomit up some black energon. Thatās a fun thing, glad you made me look at that.
Rodimus is concerned that one of their team members has got the Hollywood Tuberculosis cough, but Cyclonus doesnāt want his fucking pity. The fellas decide itās time to get a move on, seeing as theyāve been here a grand total of 20 seconds and been attacked, so they need to get this over with ASAP.
As Team -Imus flies off in a ship I donāt remember them bringing along, someone decides that theyāre going to stick their finger in that puddle of vomit.
Nightbeat you fucking idiot, there arenāt any sinks in the Dead Universe! Now your handās gonna be all gross for the entirety of this event! Heās not even analyzing it, itās just on his hand! Why is Nightbeat having zero concept of personal hygiene a running theme in the things I read? Fuck!
You may be wondering what Nightbeatās doing in the Dead Universe, or even where heās been for a good chunk of IDW. Weāve seen him in flashbacks from before the war, but not during or after, least not within anything Iāve covered. So, whatās be been up to?
Fuck you, youāll have to wait for a later issue to be told what Phase One bullshit youāll have had to read to understand why this dumbass is here.
Back on Cybertron, Prowl is telling Bumblebee that he sucks because heās not acting. Iām not exactly sure what he expects Bumblebee to do about the Titan whoās just standing there. Itās not like issuing a loitering ticket is going to do anything. Then the Decepticons attack them, among their ranks being the scariest fucking Ravage Iāve ever seen.
Why do you look like that? Rojoās supposed to have the cutesy style on this team, why the fuck did he turn the kitty cat into one of the terror dogs from Ghostbusters?Ā
Anyway, thatās the end of the issue. Sure hope youāre invested enough in trying to figure out what the fuck Nightbeatās deal is to snag Robots in Disguise #23.

About your YouTuber! Percy hc, do you think he would actually know everyone subscribed to him because of the weird background shenanigans or do you think that heās think they all just find him funny?
okay, I actually have made some more Executive Decisions since I posted that, so letās just make it clear that:
Percy spent maybe half a day thinkingĀ āwow I knew I was valid in thinking my girlfriend and sister deserve to be famousā just because he genuinely hadnāt registered the monster-sized dog or nico crawling out from the shadows behind him asĀ āweirdā at first, but then he started reading the comments and was likeā¦..ah,
Annabeth wanted him to immediately delete the videos but he was just likeĀ ānah itās too late now we might as well commitā and started planning his next video lmao. he still didnāt think it was gonna get like, Big tho
demigods and technology donāt mix this is true but by this time the Hephaestus and Athena AND Vulcan kids were all very disgruntled by this and collabed on making a line of products that are monster proof, halfblood suitable, and Hephaestus approved. Percy is using a camera in this line, and thatās why mortals watching his videos arenāt getting blocked by the mist, becauseā¦.shut up, I said so lol
so again, his videos are mostly tame except for just a few smallĀ āwtfā things happening in the background, but itās enough to get people circulating his videos likeĀ āhey what the fuck is going on with this guyā and he gets more and more followers impatiently waiting for updates
after about five months, and article gets posted on buzzfeed about the videos, listing a few theories like, a) itās photoshopped and cgi-d, although they claim they sent a few clips to video analysists that canāt find any thing fake, and b) this boy is being terrorized by ghosts and demons and he just hasnāt noticed them on camera for some fucking reason, and c) Maybe Us, The Viewers Are The Crazy Ones and d) Heās In Danger And Sending Coded Messages And We Need To Rally Together To Help Him
it trends and his followers SPIKE so Percy decides he should probably do a Q&A and everyone gets hype
except
itās Percy
Heās sitting on his bed in an orange shirt, but the writing on it is mostly obscured by a blanket. You can JUST see the tip of a spear on the wall above him.Ā Thereās a large cut on the side of his head. Heās got a clear glass of some golden liquid heās sipping from every now and then. Thereās an aquarium on the table next to him, but all the fish in the tank are huddled in the same side, staring at him??? Annabeth is sitting next to him, but sheās not looking into the camera, sheās reading a book, and you can see the cover clearly on screen but no one is able to figure out what language itās in??? at one point during the video, you hear a horse neighing even though heās in his fourth floor city apartment and his stepfather comes in to tell himĀ āblackjackās in the kitchen make him leaveā
but other than that, everyone tuned into this video excited to get answersā¦.but all the answers Percy gives are likeĀ āOh, Estelle is 10 months old! sheās getting so big!ā andĀ āAnnabeth and I met when we were 12ā² andĀ āIām looking at colleges in California but I havenāt committed anywhere yetā andĀ āmy favorite subject in school is mathā
In the middle of the video he read a questionĀ āplease what is up with that dude that keeps crawling out of your fucking walls p l e aseā and he respondsĀ āOh! Thatās my cousin Nico! :)ā and then moves back to the tame boring questions sdkjnckdvm
The very last minute of the video, he reads a question asking if heās possessed and heās likeĀ āNo, not anymoreā and Annabeth fucking snorts, the first acknowledgement sheās given the whole q&a. the video immediately just ends there, he doesnāt do a sign off or anything
people FLIP
and the next day heās just back to posting his usual content. this time features a shot of him walking in a rainstorm, to hood no umbrella, completely fucking dry
youtube drama channels are covering every single video he posts. conspiracy theorists are going fucking wild.
one of these youtube conspiracy channels is 100% run by Leo Valdez. Heās having the time of his goddamn life throwing bullshit out there
Piper McLean 100% has her own channel dedicated to debunking everything Leo says on his channel. Theyāve been doing this dance since 9th grade and all of their viewers think they fucking hate each other itās hilarious to them
so SHE points out that not only are Leoās theories stupid, but heās been spotted in Percyās videos! And he was on fire in one of them! Hello???
Someone then tweets her that SHEāS been spotted in Percyās videos, a few of them the same ones Leo was in, and she responds to the callout with a Mariah Carey gif and goes silent on twitter for three months
Leo starts insisting thatās Definitely Not Him In Percyās Videos, Thank You, How Dare You Accuse Me Associating With Not Only The Demonic Forces That Follow Him But Also Piper McLean
Percy tweets out a picture of the 7, featuring Leo and Piper hugging and looking like best friends. Leo responds with a Joanne the Scammer gif and also goes quiet on twitter but keeps making ridiculous conspiracy videos lmao
On screen:Ā āHey, Paul, the internet thinks Iām in league with supernatural forces. What do you think about that?ā *camera slowly zooms in on Paulās tired face as he looks up from reading a book on the Greek god Poseidon*
everyone realizes one of Percyās mortal friends from school is also a youtuber so they BOMBARD him and heās just likeĀ āListen Percy justā¦.fucking lives like this. heās not planning anything. He disappears all the time and comes back covered in burns. one time I went in his apartment without calling first and he met me in the living room with a shield and a sword. Sometimes carriage horses in the city get loose and just follow him around and he holds conversations with them. I think his dad is in the mob. He just lives like this. We just got used to itā sjkdgkjldsklsd
Percy posts a video calledĀ āskateboarding down my camps climbing wall!!ā and every comment isĀ āWHY IS THERE L A V A?!?!?!?!?ā
A video where he sees just How Much he can annoy Chiron and Mr. D before he gets threatened with dolphin-ism. It doesnāt take long, but everyone ignores the guy with glowing eyes yelling about how heās going to change him into a sea creature in favor of focusing in on the fucking leopard head mounted on the wall thatās moving, roaring and being fed snacks???Ā
Rachel goes into Oracle mode and gives out a prophecy in the middle of a live stream and Percy just sighs in annoyance while all the viewers are flipping out like hello isnāt she one of the richest people in the world???
the viewers start trying to decipher the prophecy like they think itās all planned and Percyās just slowly dropping some lemony snickett bullshit on them
his videos are ALWAYS trending and heās one of the most popular vloggers and itās so funny because 90% of the videos are literally justĀ ātaking my sister to the park!āĀ ādate night with my girlfriend!āĀ āswim team awards ceremony!āĀ āI forgot to study for my history exam!ā like just. the most fucking generic but people are sucked in lmao
He does monthly q&aās but they mostly go the same way the original one didĀ
āwhatās with the fucking guy whoās half donkey???āĀ āGrover identifies as a goat, actually, please be respectful of that in the futureā
āwhoās that fucking kid that crying on your couch that you ignored the whole videoāĀ āthatās actually the Greek god Apollo, he was upset because I wanted back the Led Zeppelin shirt he stole from meāĀ
āam I crazy or was there a 7 foot tall guy with one eye walking around the kitchen eating peanut butter out of the jarāĀ āthatās my baby brother Tyson :)ā
āyour friend said your dadās in the mob but weāve never seen your father on this channel where is he???āĀ āhe, uhā¦ā¦.lives with the fishes?ā (Annabeth groaned at that one lmao)
āyou really vlogged getting struck by lightning and not going to the fucking hospital, huhāĀ ādonāt worry, that was just my cousin, she was mad because I stole her nail polish earlier but she wouldnāt kill me over itā
COULD YOU IMAGINE HIM POSTING A VIDEO WITH THE PARTY PONIES AND TITLING ITĀ āI ACCIDENTALLY GOT DRAGGED TO FURRY CONā
but overall: Youtuber Percyā¢ is, in fact, the only valid thing that exists thanks for coming to my TED Talk

Your name, please? Robyn. Are you heartbroken right now? No, my heartās doing okay. If so, how long have you been heartbroken? Do you like the area you live in? I like that itās a lot quieter than the metro, but we get everything we could also get in the city nonetheless. Right now itās just a little unsettling since the Taal Volcano erupted and we have ashfall land all over our house, but otherwise where we live is pretty decent and uneventful for the most part. Do you ever get complimented on your eyes? What color are they? Itās not my strongest feature so no, not really. Theyāre dark brown/almost black.
What facial feature do you like the best on a person? Everyone has their different strong suits, so. Do you like to be called baby? Only by my parents and my girlfriend, because otherwise that would be creepy. What is your favorite flower? I like roses, sunflowers, and peonies. Idk, my answers to this question changes every time so itās safe to say theyāre only my favorites today. When did you last use the restroom? Five minutes ago. I went before starting this. How long is your hair? Pretty long. I havenāt had it cut since late in 2018; if I throw my head slightly back it already reaches my hips. I plan to keep it long until my graduation shoot, so I wonāt be going to the salon for at least another month. Do you have braces? I used to. Do you have any freckles? Nope. What is your favorite Internet meme? There was a local meme going around last week and it involved people making hilarious puns out of celebrity names and pairing them with Photoshopped pictures of the celebrities to match the pun ā for example, a local celeb named Rico Blanco was styled as Rico Blanket and a photo of him was shopped so that heās in bed wrapped in a blanket :(((( OK IT DOESNāT SOUND FUNNY RN but all the entries were hilarioussssss I swear. Unfortunately everyone hopped on the meme train and it died in like a week. How many windows does your room have? Two big windows but each have four tiny window panes in them that can be opened. Do you have a rug in your room? What color is it? No. My dog likes peeing on rugs so we donāt like having them laying around. What is the weirdest animal you've ever held? I donāt think any animal is weird... but the coolest ones Iāve ever held are a snake, an eagle, a sea turtle, andĀ a crocodile. The first three I got to meet in Bali, and the crocodile was from Palawan. Do you get extremely hyper when under the influence of sugar? No. I never really believed in that either. What about caffeine? I get pretty talkative, yes. I also talk like I have built-in exclamation points lol. Have you ever tried any drugs? If so, did you regret it? No, I havenāt. Do you have any pregnant friends? None of my friends are, but I can never be sure anymore when it comes to people I know. I always say no to this question, then sooner or later someone I know gives birth kfdgkdjfhd like a classmate from high school just had her third kid and no one even had any idea she was pregnant again. Guess Iāll just keep answering this question with a shrug. Have you seen anyone lately that you knew but didn't remember from where? Yeah, this was me for a few seconds when I arrived in my history class for our first day last Friday and I saw several people that I knew I know, but I had to recollect my thoughts. I eventually remembered who they were, but for a few seconds I was stumped. When was the last time you toilet papered or egged someones house? Iāve never done this, because you donāt do this in the Philippines. Do you usually dress up for Halloween? Some years I would. When ordering food, what do you usually get as a drink? I always get ala carte because I only drink water (I get full quicker if I have any other drink), and service water is always there. Put your favorite color and favorite animal. EX: Silver walrus Pink dog. When drawing something, do you try to be super precise or do you not care? I donāt care for drawing and am aware of just how bad I am at it, so I barely make any effort when I have to. When was the last time you snapped at someone? Sunday morning. My mom was playing a mobile game where the character will only be able to move if you scream, so she was screaming her ass off at 7 AM and I was worried it would wake the neighbors up. Does it bug you when people clap with their palms? HAHAHAHAHA like Nicole Kidman? Oh man. Iāve never actually seen someone clap the way she did in real life, so I donāt know if it would bug me. I know itād send me laughing, though. Have you hugged anyone today? Just my dog. Classes have been suspended because of the Taal erupting, so Iām not seeing anyone else today. How many languages do you know how to say 'happy birthday' in? Filipino, English, Spanish, French, and Korean, so make that five. What language would you like to learn that you don't already know? Korean, just because I watch so many Korean shows as it is lmao. Are you able to take this language at your school? Yes, but itās not required in my curriculum so Iāve never taken a Korean language elective. Have you ever been into a bar? Yes, Iāve always preferred bars to clubs so Iāve gone to a lot of them. What ethnicity are you? Broadly, Austronesian. But specifically, Iām Filipino, and even more specifically, Tagalog. How much makeup do you wear? None. I usually wear makeup only for special events, or if I absolutely had to, like for my graduation shoot. If you could fly, what kind of wings wouldĀ you have? Iād like pink sparkly ones please hahahaha. Write some lyrics from the song stuck in your head right now. Nothingās playing in my head at the moment. Do you like that song? Would you describe yourself as 'fiesty'? You mean feisty? I can bring out that side of me if I have to, but Iām not naturally it. How corny is High School Musical in your opinion? Pretty fucking corny. But I love the series and itāll always be an important part of my childhood, so Iām never going to hate it. Have you actually read Twilight? Yes. I donāt know how I started getting into it though; I just remember it became insanely popular in the fourth grade and all of a sudden I wanted the Twilight boxed set for Christmas. What about Harry Potter? Yes, I read most of the books. My sister got into HP when she was aroundddd 10-11ish and my parents also got her a boxed set, so I borrowed each book after she finished them. Out of the two, which is better? Twilight.
Name a member of the Beatles! Ringo Starr. Who was the name of your first crush? My first real crush was Andi. How long ago was that? Eleven years ago. Do you still know that person? She migrated to New Zealand nine years ago, so we got disconnected for a long time and thatās when we got cut off. Weāre Facebook friends now, but itās never been the same. Happy for her, though. Can you handle your emotions very well? Usually I can, but when Iām at my breaking point then Iām at my breaking point. How often do you read books? Once every five years :(( JK uhhhhh I read loads, just not from books, and particularly not anything fictional. Are you the jealous type? I can be when thereās reason to, yep. Are you the type of person who gets jealous of people's pasts? No. And usually people regret their past, so I donāt feel jealous about that. Have you ever gotten an ear infection from riding an airplane? No. My ears were incredibly uncomfortable during my first plane ride though, and it didnāt help that I was already panicking long before the flight started. Anyway, my ears never fully ~popped and I was like 80% deaf for the entire plane ride. When was the last time you witnessed someone throw up? The last time someone threw up, it was me lol. But if weāre gonna be strict about the question, it wassssss last April I think. When was the last time YOU threw up? Sometime around May last year. Do you know anyone who faints at the sight of blood? ME. Iām anyone who faints at the sight of blood. Maybe not literally faint but I do feel super nauseous and weak and dizzy and Iād sometimes gag too. Hmm. I wonder how those girls have their period. Yeah well itās not a very fun 3-4 days for me, my dude. Don't you just love the Cottonelle puppy? I donāt know what that is. Can you do any 'magic' tricks? No. Do you know how to play Checkers? I used to as a kid, because we used to have lots of board games. But since it was the game we barely ever played, I eventually forgot the rules. What clubs are you in at school? Iām in one of the two journalism organizations, and I also joined the graduation committee this year so that I get to contribute something for our batch :) What do you fear most in this world? Either falling from a very high place or drowning. And injections. What do your siblings fear most in this world? I know my sister is afraid of big crowds, chaotic situations, and small spaces. I donāt know what my brother fears, nor do I really care. What was the last sentence you heard anyone say? Iām listening to a mukbang ASMR right now and the last thing the girl said was her basically describing what sheās about to eat. Is Taylor more of a boy's name or a girl's name? I know weāre not supposed to care about this anymore, but if I really had to think about this question I see it as a boyās name. But I also see that it works on girls just as nicely, so. What about Dylan? Boyās name. But it sounds so badass on girls, and I prefer it as a girlās name. What colors are the eyes of your family members? Dark brown/black. Filipinos all look the same, dude. Are you related to anyone with red hair? No. Do you know anyone with super super green eyes? Other than celebrities, no. What color was your hair when you were little? It has always been black. What color is it now? ^ Were you a chubby baby? I was a pretty chubby young kid especially from the ages of 3-5, but I was an okay-sized baby/toddler. Iād be surprised if I was chubby considering my mom and dad are both slim. What is your favorite mythical creature? Not a fan of those. Do you know anyone with a mullet? No, I donāt think so. Put down a random word here. Watermelon. What is your favorite fruit? Avocado. Now what is your favorite flavor of lollipop? Chocolate. If you combine your 2 above answers and make a perfume would it smell good? Probably not. Theyāre so different. Do you always feel like you have to be the best? Yes. Thatās why I always take it hard when I end up not being that. Are you looking forward to summer? Yes, because Iāll get to rest. No, because it will be my last summer until I die. Are you wearing socks right now or are you barefoot? Iām barefoot. Socks always feels like theyāre there, and I donāt like that feeling. What's on your favorite necklace? Iām not regularly wearing any necklace these days. How many hours of sleep did you get last night? Around seven, which is okay for me. Which is better: gingerbread or butterscotch? Caramel or peanut butter? Nutella or chocolate? Do you own an iPad? We own a family iPad, but no oneās used it in a while. I was the one who used it last as a means to work and communicate, back when I broke my phone and didnāt have a new laptop yet in my first year of college. I honestly hope that iPad never dies on us, since thereās a load of great memories there. Do you watch Glee? No and as someone who hates song covers, I think Iām better off not watching it skksjfdhgfg. How hard is it for you to get out of bed in the morning? When that day would require me to do something I dread, like attend a class I hate, it will be a lot harder for me to get up. But generally Iām pretty okay, as long as I set my alarm 30 minutes to an hour before I actually have to get up so that I have enough time to properly wake up. How many books are in the current room you're in? Iām in the dining room so there are zero books around. Have you ever witnessed an aircraft break the sound barrier? No. I also never really knew what that means, but I know Iāve never seen that. Do you keep a sketchpad in your room? I donāt draw, so I never needed one. Is there anything you do right before you go to sleep? Put water on my dogās bowl ā he likes drinking before we doze off. What color is your favorite purse? I only use one and itās pink. How much money is currently in your wallet? ā±2,000. Do you get an allowance? Yes. How many songs are on your iPod? Donāt use an iPod these days. Do you usually have sweet dreams or nightmares? My dreams are either weird or nightmares. I never get any sweet ones. How has the weather been lately? Itās a little gloomy and cloudy. I donāt know if itās an effect of the volcano eruption nearby, or if the weather is just like this. When was the last earthquake you felt? It was either August or September.

In Love With My YouTube Hero
Masterlist
Chapter 1
I walked into my English class where my teacher, Mr. Newman was writing our final project on the Promethean board. I sat down in my usual seat in the second row towards the window. I didn't like to be in front of the class, but I didn't want to be called on if I sat in the back. I don't have a problem with the teacher; he was a good teacher. I just have anxiety with being wrong, if he picks on me to answer a question, and I will most likely be chosen to answer if I sit in the back or the very front. I pulled out my laptop and started to prepare for the class.
I saw a notification from YouTube on my notification box. It was a notification from my favorite YouTuber, XavGame, and the thumbnail was just him sitting in front of the camera, not his usual colorful thumbnails of his face on whichever character he was playing as in a game. I pulled the video up on YouTube and watched it, as I had nothing to do for the next ten minutes before class started. Xavier, or XavGame, was a couple of years older than me, and he was my YouTube hero. His videos had always cheered me up when I was depressed or needed to distract myself. He was a very inspirational person as he would do multiple charity streams a year, most of them for donating to children hospitals or to fight world hunger. But once a year, he would use the money he got from donations to go to a poverty-stricken country and build things that were needed, like houses, hospitals, wells. He would even bring basic medicine to those who couldn't get to it.
The video went on, and Xavier went on to say that he was going on a short break. He had realized that he needed a break from making videos and traveling to just enjoy some alone time to clear his head and relax. I didn't blame him. Even being a small part-time YouTuber is hard and stressful; I can't imagine what it's like to be a full-time YouTuber that uploads videos twice a day, along with planning and organizing mission trips.
I finished up the video and clicked off the video and pulled up my Tumblr account. Someone had found out a proxy that gets past the firewalls, so everyone uses it to get on social media and watch YouTube videos. I looked through my feed and reblogged some aesthetic pictures and then looked through my message to work on writing commission. I saw that I had some new messages. I started to talk to my patrons and got the commissions straightened out.
I closed my laptop as class started. Mr. Newman started the class by greeting us. He then proceeded to tell us about our final project. Our final project was to choose a unit from our studies and write a piece of writing that goes along with that unit, and he was giving us the entire block to work on it. I looked through the units that we had been through and decided to write a Medieval narrative. I decided to write the medieval narrative in the perspective of my original character who is a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. I began writing, and I didn't even stop writing when the bell rang as I had my earbuds in my ears, my music blaring through them.
There was a tap on the edge of my computer screen, and I looked up to see my best friend, Teegan, standing there with her arms crossed. "Hey, T-Bean," I chuckled. My other friend, Val, and I had always called her "T-Bean" because her name is Teegan Bean.
She sat down on the desk next to me, pulling out a hair bow. She started to fix her long, wavy dark brown hair, putting it in a ponytail. "We better hurry up to Photojournalism. We've been late every day this week so far." She smiled, her forest green eyes scanning over my face and desk.
I started to put away my laptop after saving my document with my Medieval narrative in it. I closed my laptop and slid it into my messenger bag. I got up and left the English class with my bag and Teegan. We walked down the hall, taking a stop at our lockers to change our binders before arriving at the Photojournalism classroom. There were already people are the Mac computers, working on Yearbook spreads. We only have eight Macs and about twenty people, because the school won't give us funding to order more Macs, or at least more computers in general, or order more Nikon DSLRs because they literally put all the funding into the football team. Every other organization in the school must do their own fundraising to be able to compete or make whatever they're making, whereas the football team doesn't have to do fundraising and can afford to travel all over the state and don't even have to pay for jerseys. I even offered some of my own money that I make at the small shop down in town to get the cameras and Macs, but Ms. Dyer refuses every time I do.
But that's my ranting for now. I walked to my usual seat towards the corner of my room with my laptop as Teegan takes her seat at the middle Mac and begins to work on fixing some photos in Photoshop. I sat down and pulled out my laptop. I started to work on the blog that I ran on the school website. The yearbook staff had agreed to do a feature in the yearbook where we put pictures of students or teachers and the give a story about a time in high school that they will always remember for as long as they are alive. Since we get so many good stories, we decided to make a blog on the school sight to feature the ones that we couldn't put in the yearbook. We called it "the Humans of James River."
I began to transcribe stories and select photos. Once I had a few done, I started to type them onto the blog. I finished up when the bell rang. I grabbed my laptop and slid my laptop into my bag. I walked out of the classroom and down the hall to my locker. I open my bookbag and started to put my binders and notebooks in my bookbag. I closed my bookbag and shut my locker.
I walked out of the school to Ruby, my red mini cooper. I unlocked the car and put my bag in the passenger seat. I plugged my phone into my car and scrolled through my Spotify playlist. I found my playlist and put it on shuffle, and Without Me by Halsey started to play. I started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
I live in a small town in Virginia where everyone knows each other; the population of my town was about 600, and that included the town itself and the rural area surrounding the town. The body count of the student body at my high school is about 400 kids, the senior class, my grade, having about 150 kids. But the high school covered about four different communities, not just the town of little ole' Buchanan.
I honestly hated it here. There isn't anything to do, and there are old people galore. But aside from the old people and nothing to do, the reason I hate it is because of my parents. I have to live with them despite me being 18 because if I leave them, they will go nuts and call the cops on me and make it a whole big deal. They're the type of parents that don't care about their kid's wellbeing, just if they have someone to baby them. They drink themselves away each night and fight with each other, or worse: take their anger out on me, despite me staying in my room and not speaking nor interacting with them at all so I won't provoke them to cause harm to me. I'm used to them hitting and kicking me, mentally abusing me, and causing me to go to the hospital for their harm inflicted on me. I, as well as others, have tried to get my parents turned, but the cops didn't have any evidence to hold against them. Then after that, my parents threatened to harm me or anyone else who tried to turn them in, so no one has tried to help me.
I eventually arrived at my house and got out. My mother was home, but my dad wasn't. That was a relief, as my dad was always the reason that my mother went to drinking. She is nice when she isn't drunk, but my father is just mean in general. I wish mother would leave him, but she wouldn't be able to support herself and me.
I grabbed my book bag and walked into the house. "I'm home, mother," I called out.
"I'm in here, Darcy." I heard her from the hallway, so she was probably in her bedroom. I walked in her room to find her walking out of the bathroom that was connected to their room. In her hand was a couple of pregnancy tests.
I looked up at her eyes. "You're pregnant."
She nodded. "Yes." She looked down.
"Who's is it?" I asked, knowing she's had a past of having affairs behind my father's back.
"Darc-"
"Who's?" I cut her off.
"His name is Mark... He's your AFDA teacher from last year...." She sighed.
"Mr. Wilson?" I felt shocked. I knew he was a good man, but I was just scared of what father would do to her if he found out it wasn't his.
She nodded. "Yes. He's taken care of me when your father wouldn't. He's a better lover than my husband is." She sat down on her bed. "You know that..." I only nodded. She looked at me. "Please don't tell your father."
"I won't. You know I won't. I just don't want him to find out on his own and hurt you..." I sat down beside her and put my arm around her shoulders. "You need to give up the alcohol. It'll hurt the baby."
She nodded. "I know. I'm trying to stop."
I leaned against her. "Go live with Teegan and her parents and I. Or go live with Mark."
"I don't know... I'll talk to Mark."
"You need to live with him. He can take care of you." I looked over at her. "Please. If not for me, then do it for the baby. I don't want dad to be the reason you lose the baby."
She nodded. "I know." She stood up. "Enough of that for now. I'm going to go pick up something from North Star. Do you want anything?" North Star was a restaurant near my town that had the best food. It was very small, but it was very popular, so the seats filled up fast.
I raised an eyebrow at her. "North Star? You rarely eat anything from North Star."
"It's the baby." She chuckled. "Do you want anything?" She repeated.
"Hmm, I'm feeling a bacon cheeseburger. I have a charity stream tonight, so I'm not going to eat a lot, and I didn't eat at school so I'm very hungry.
"Okay. I'll order our food."
I smiled. "Here, take some of my money." I pulled out my wallet and handed her some money for both of our meals.
She smiled at me. "Thanks, sweetie."
I smiled as I walked into my room. I walked in and sat my book bag down on my bed. I made sure everything was neat before I walked over to my computer desk.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 5 review: Minor improvements, but it's still among the best
One of my favorite laptops to review every year is the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga. I've actually written five reviews of six units, and there have only been four previous generations. Some of my favorites were theĀ second-gen model with its OLED display, and theĀ third-gen model with Dolby Vision; it was also the last to offer the Lift and Lock keyboard.
I didn't push too hard for this year's model, the Gen 5, because not much has changed. LenovoĀ refreshed the Gen 4 with Intel Comet Lake processors last summer, so the biggest change with Gen 5 is the availability of Comet Lake vPro processors. Also, reviewers didn't get to check out the Comet Lake Gen 4 models, since those were announced just a few days after the Whiskey Lake models were sent to us.
While not much has changed, that's pretty much OK. This is still one of the best convertibles on the market, a premium machine that you can always count on. It has one of the best keyboards, a beautiful screen, and a solid aluminum build.
Note that the regular price is $3,511, but ThinkPads are never regular price. They're always discounted in some way or another, and the unit that Lenovo sent me is $2,106.60 as configured.
Day one
Design
As far as design goes, the chassis hasn't changed since last year at all. In fact, last year debuted the first aluminum model, marking a major change in direction. It's clear that Lenovo takes very few risks with its ThinkPads at all, usually sticking to black colors and steering clear of metal chasses. This one is Iron Gray though, and it looks quite nice.
Exactly one thing changed about the design. For the second year in a row, there's new branding. The Gen 4 debuted a new black ThinkPad logo and a new X1 logo. Now, those two are being combined into a ThinkPad X1 logo that sits in the corner. It's literally the only way you can tell the Gen 5 from the Gen 4.
Lenovo does a great job with its aluminum business PCs, as they look clean and sophisticated, while remaining stylish. I noticed this whenĀ it debuted ThinkBook, its sort of anti-ThinkPad where it can try new things.
Another thing that hasn't changed is the selection of ports. There are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, either of which can be used to charge, power dual 4K displays, and so on. And yes, these are full Thunderbolt 3 ports, as many devices only use the base spec, which supports one 4K monitor.
Next to one of the USB Type-C ports is an Ethernet connector, which is really meant to be used with Lenovo's mechanical docks. Also on the left side is an HDMI 1.4 port, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, and a 3.5mm audio jack. The ports seem dated though, with an HDMI standard that doesn't support proper 4K (at 60Hz) and a USB port that supports 5Gbps, something that I'm getting tired of seeing in premium PCs. I assume that this will change next year, and that it wasn't done this year because this is mostly a spec bump.
On the right side, there's another USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, along with a power button. And of course, there's a pen garage, a staple of the product that's been there since the beginning.
The pen garage is my favorite feature of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga that Lenovo hasn't killed yet. If we were talking about features of all time, we'd be talking about the QHD OLED display that disappeared in Gen 3 and the Lift and Lock keyboard that disappeared in Gen 4, but I digress. A built in pen means that it's not getting in the way like it would if it was magnetically attached to the side, it's always charged, and it's always with you when you need it.
Display and audio
As always, this PC comes with a 14-inch display, and there are several configurations, none of which are QHD OLED. The newest is a Full HD panel with Privacy Guard, Lenovo's privacy screen that keeps people from looking over your shoulder. It's not on the config that the company sent me; in fact, Lenovo hasĀ neverĀ offered me a Privacy Guard display on a review unit, so I really can't vouch for it. HP has sent meĀ several of its variants of Sure View display, and that's quite good, but there's a lot that goes into a good privacy display.
The other three options are FHD at 400 nits, QHD at 300 nits, and UHD at 500 nits with Dolby Vision HDR support. The one that Lenovo sent me is the UHD model. It always asks which one I prefer, and the answer doesn't change. I like pretty displays. Lenovo actually usually ends up sending me an FHD model as well, just for the better battery life, but I don't expect that that's coming this year, being such a minor refresh.
If you've been following along so far, then you know the bezels haven't changed at all, given that the footprint and display are the same size. The top bezel packs a webcam, an IR camera, and a ThinkShutter privacy guard, so you don't have to worry about putting tape over it.
Right above the keyboard are two up-firing speakers that are part of the Dolby Atmos audio system, which is frankly excellent. There are also two woofers on the bottom of the device, for great all-around sound. It's crystal clear and it gets loud too. I always like to think of just how badĀ the ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 2 - the first X1 Yoga that I reviewedĀ and possibly my favorite all-time PC - was in terms of audio and how far it's come.
Keyboard and trackpad
One day I'm just going to accept that the Lift and Lock keyboard is gone. That day is not today. If you're unfamiliar, Lift and Lock was a frankly brilliant innovation of Lenovo's that made the keys retract into the keyboard when you folded the display back and used it as a tablet. It made it super comfortable to use. But obviously, there was a lot of mechanics that went into that, and that takes up space. When Lenovo shrunk the footprint with last year's model, it was time for my favorite feature of any convertible laptop ever to go away.
Now that I've got that over with, this is one of the best keyboards around. ThinkPads keyboards are the Cadillacs of keyboards; that's pretty well-known. They're accurate, they're comfortable, and you can count on them.
Obviously, they also include the TrackPoint, a relic from an age when trackpads on Windows PCs were terrible. Some people still love the TrackPoint though, and it's a trademark of ThinkPads. Yes,Ā allĀ ThinkPads have one of these little red nubs. I've tried to get used to it, but frankly, it's easy enough to ignore. If you really can't stand it, I'd urge you to check out Lenovo's ThinkBook lineup, which sheds a lot of these legacy parts.
The truth is that we don't need TrackPoints anymore because we have good trackpads now. Yes, I'm talking about Microsoft Precision trackpads. I do love the physical buttons though, and you can bet that if the TrackPoint went away, the buttons would too.
You'll also notice that it's got a fingerprint sensor to the right of the trackpad. Just like the convertible form factor itself and the Lift and Lock keyboard, Lenovo was the first with a fingerprint sensor. ThinkPads have been using fingerprint sensors long before Windows Hello was a thing.
Performance and battery life
The model that Lenovo sent me for review includes an Intel Core i7-10610U, a quad-core CPU with eight threads and a 15W TDP. It's the vPro variant of the Core i7-10510U. Interestingly, this is the highest-end CPU that's available on Lenovo's website right now, so you can't get the hexa-core Core i7-10710U or the vPro Core i7-10810U.
Performance is fine, and it's better than previous generations, obviously. Comet Lake is the only version of Intel's 10th-gen processors that comes with a vPro variant, so the 10nm Ice Lake is out of the question. One thing about Ice Lake, however, is that it has Iris Plus Graphics, so the CPU power is here with Comet Lake, but the graphics power really isn't. You can use it for some light Photoshop or something, but I wouldn't go too much further. This is a productivity machine.
For battery life, I got about five hours doing regular with with the battery slider at one notch above battery saver and brightness at 50%. To be clear, this would probably double if you got the FHD model, and that's why FHD models exist. They have a quarter of the pixels and can save a lot of power. QHD is a nice balance between the resolution of UHD and the power efficiency of FHD, but ever since Lenovo introduced UHD, it really hasn't been using premium QHD panels.
As you can see, the hexa-core Comet Lake Core i7 and the Ice Lake Core i7 both outperform the Core i7-10610U. And of course, AMD Ryzen 4000 blows away anything that Intel has in the 10th generation.
Conclusion
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is a winner for the same reason that it's always been a winner. It's a well-built machine that passes a dozen MIL-STD-810G tests, and it's reliable. It has one of the best keyboards around, excellent Dolby Atmos speakers, and a pretty display.
It's not a winner for any new reasons because very little has changed. The bezels aren't any smaller than they were last year, it's still 2.99 pounds, and so on. And of course, I'm mad that there's no QHD OLED option and no Lift and Lock keyboard.
It's not necessarily a bad thing that the design hasn't changed, and that the bezels haven't shrunk at all. This is a business PC, and for businesses, everything about the ThinkPad X1 Yoga is more practical than anything else. It's the best at what it does, which is providing a premium, reliable computing experience.

Creator 2017 Tag Meme
I was tagged by: @tenthebookworm, @sly2o, @tracylorde, @stardust-blake and @pendragaryen.
Thank you so much, ladies! It's an awesome idea that boosts not only our confidence in our work but hopefully also the knowledge about well-deserving but maybe still overlooked content providers in the fandom. :)
Rules: Itās time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favorite works youāve created in 2017 (fics, art, edits, etc!) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things youāve brought into the world. Tag as many writers/artists/etc as you want (fan or original!) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works. <3
In no particular order:
1. Bellamy Blake Modern AU ā Ā Blake returns with new album and bandĀ āPatroclus Perishļæ½ļæ½ (Fake Instagram page plus mini fanfiction):
First of all, I have no Photoshop so all the edits and gifs I do are made from scratch and for some features that are easily done in PS, I have to experiment to get the same effect (or to get it close enough) in my editing software.
That's the reason why this one in particular was pretty fun but also challenging because I wanted to include a video preview (and I also wanted to get the font close to the original). Overall, the edit as well as the mini fanfiction in form of a news article (did I get the tone right as someone who is a learner of English?) were done within a short amount of time because I had this weird creator's rush. You feel the spark and suddenly, you're in a flow and you're eager to finish it. One of the best moods to be honest!
Tumblr messed up the formatting at first which caused the text to disappear, so I had to make a new post. Bad tumblr!
2. Morning RoutineĀ (Fanfiction about Baby!Bellamy)
Morning Routine was born pretty much the same way after I had a spark of inspiration. It's also the fanfiction I consider a Parapluiepliant Original and which I consider my very first fanfiction I have ever written (and posted!) because TokenĀ ,Ā FaithĀ andĀ Foresight, were still inspired by dialogue bits from Lord of the Rings (even though the mix of LotR dialogue bit with Bellarke has some scenes I came up with). And I got some nice comments for that one which is a plus. ;)
The story is basically about Bellamy's father taking care of his son on the Ark before he is called to help out engineers on a routine check up. I really liked how I wrote the ending paragraph and it all came together in the end. It is bittersweet with all its implications, same as the title with its double meaning which only adds to the the feeling when you have finished the story.
3.Ā Exactly how long does it take to tell someone you love them?Ā (Gif Set to one of wellsjahasghostās 5(+) fic celebration)
This one was inspired by wellsjahasghostāsĀ 5(+) sentence fics celebration. When I read that specific paragraph for the first time, I was hit pretty hard by all the Bellarke feels, something which only a few have managed so far with their writing. I was immediately struck by the idea of how I'd want to use each sentence.
You could say that I tried to visualize a fanfiction and to get the feeling right, I also played a bit with fonts and colours to indicate memories and text passages in contrast to Bellamy's thoughts.
4. āWhat if our hearts could be connected like constellations?āĀ (A Bellarke Gif Set using a quote and a folklore about Altair and Vega/Hikoboshi and Orihime)
This is the one I'm really proud of because it is the first gif set where I tried to be a bit more creative. It combines a few thoughts I had here: I used an overlay of the Milky Way to indicate the separation of Bellamy and Clarke similar to Altair and Vega, thus having Altair's star on Bellamy and Vega's on Clarke.
In many stories all over the world, Altair and Vega were lovers separated by the Milkyway. And in Japan, there is a tale that Orihime (literally a weaving princess) and Hikoboshi (literally a star boy), coresponding to Vega and Altair respectively, are only able to meet once a year. Clarke Princess Griffin and Bellamy Starfreckled Blake had to wait 6 years to meet again. So basically their hearts are like stars connected like the constellations aforementioned.
5. The 100 Season 5 Poster Competition
I tried my luck but without any success. However, I'm actually quite proud of it though. Especially, the delinquents in space looking out of the window was challenging as heck (because finding decent pictures of their backs is hard!).
Honorary mention goes to:
>Ā https://parapluiepliant.tumblr.com/post/156548344371/ice-king-baby-i-cannot-believe-that-aaron-andĀ
(Season 4 Countdown picture of Roan in which I gave him a E-guitar instead of a sword, so he can enter the song-clave to battle them all with his rendition of Ice Ice Baby and which might also be a good idea to get Zach's signature on)
>Ā https://parapluiepliant.tumblr.com/post/162841250346/your-list-was-pragmatic-2x09-remember-me-4x04
(aka the one where I contrasted Clarke's way to tell people that the list was pragmatic and is offended that Jaha implies that other's misundertood it as her telling them they are without value with the famous 'It's worth the risk scene' because Clarke often has that problem to really articulate what she means...WHICH IS WHY SHE TELLS BELLAMY IMPLICITLY THAT SHE THINKS HE'S SPECIAL BY SAYING HIS SISTER WILL COME TO RECOGNIZE IT IN TIME AS WELL. MY HEART!!!!)
>Ā https://parapluiepliant.tumblr.com/post/166082564056/inspired-by-lang-leav-lovers-paradox-from-theĀ
(really liked how I was able to make the list scene colours look warm but still maintained a bit of the blue light; I also thought that Leav's poem with a little change worked perfectly with some of the communication issues those two idiots in love have)
[btw I never noticed how much edits and text posts I already did! Maybe I'm going to reblog/queue them again because my tags are a mess(TM) and trying to find them all was a hassle...probably missed some due to that too]Ā Ā
I encourage everyone seeing this to participate, no matter how small or insignificant you think you are. Let's make some noise and have fun! I really like to see some new blogs and boost their creative works, so please tag me in your post and I put it into my queue to keep it going. :)

Moments In Song No. 016 - Christen
āMoments In Songā asks people one simple question, āWhat are you listening to?ā We believe that you can learn a lot about an individual and their experiences based off of the music they love. For every installment we ask someone to make a playlist of 10 songs theyāre listening to, whether it be something new they stumbled upon, or a song theyāve always loved, and explain the story behind their choices. The personās playlist is then uploaded, giving them the chance to share it with others. Each post aims to profile someone from a different walk of life, whether they be an artist, a student, the mailman, a school teacher, an athlete, a nurse, your next-door neighbor, anyone with a love for music; showing that no matter where we come from, what we do, or what we look like, music has the ability to bring us together.
With a playlist centered on relaxed beats and soothing vocals, Christen tells us the stories behind some of her favorite songs. Keep reading below to see our interview with the personal stylist and fashion blogger as she tells us about the first thing she listens to when playing music, 106 & Park, and how her taste in music has matured over the years.
Listen to Christenās playlist on Apple Music and Spotify.
Words by Julian.Ā
Photos by Tayo.
What was the thought process that went behind making your playlist?
I was thinking about all the songs Iām currently listening to at the moment. I literally download new music everyday, and these are some of the newest songs Iāve downloaded, along with ones I already had. I love music so it was hard for me to fit all of my favorite songs into my playlist. I really like songs with smooth vocals, so a lot of these songs are very relaxing and put me in a mood where I want to feel stress free and care free. Ā
What song did you instantly know had to be on your playlist?
Itās between āCranes in the Skyā or āBlessed.ā Itās funny because I never listen to the lyrics of a song. I always listen to the beat first. Ā Those are the only songs that I really listen to the lyrics and am like, āOk, let me figure out what theyāre talking about.ā āBlessedā is definitely one of my favorites because it talks about my life a little bit, and how Iām a crazy person sometimes but still blessed to have the people in my life who know how to deal with me and my craziness. And with āCranes in the Sky,ā I didnāt really know what it meant at first, and I guess it meanās different things to different people, but to me, it makes me feel safe. Even with everything going on in the world, it lets me know everything is going to be ok.
How would you describe your taste in music?
Itās a mix of everything. Like I said earlier I like really mellow music, but I also really like house music, techno. Hip-Hop is cool. I like it but only certain songs and artists. But Iāll listen to certain music when Iām feeling relaxed, happy. Iām a weirdo, because when Iām sad I like to listen to sad music, to make me even sadder. [Laughs.]
I think everyone does that.
I donāt know why, but I really have to be in a specific mood to listen to certain songs. Like depending on how Iām feeling in the morning, Iāll listen to some turn up songs to get me hype, or days when Iām feeling tired Iāll listen to some more mellow stuff. But I feel like music in general sounds better when itās loud, so I like to blast my music too when Iām in the car. The only type of music I donāt like though is country.
You mentioned earlier that when you first listen to songs the thing that sticks out to you the most is the beat. Is that the case 99% of the time?
Yeah definitely. Because if a song doesnāt catch my attention within like the first ten seconds, Iām turning it off. I know sometimes when Iām in the car I donāt have time to change the song, Iāll let the song play and Iām like, āOh ok. This isnāt really that bad. Maybe I shouldāve listened to the whole thing.ā But for the most part the beat is what draws me in and keeps me wanting to listen more.
You said earlier āCranes in the Skyā and āBlessedā were songs that had you focusing in on the lyrics. What songs on your playlist were the opposite and had a beat that really drew you in?
āMiddle of Things, Beautiful Wifeā by Sango featuring Xavier Omar and āHaremā by Miguel. I have no idea what the hell Miguel is talking about, but the beat along with his voice makes me like the song a lot. There are a lot of songs where I donāt know what theyāre talking about, and sometimes I do want to research what theyāre saying, but then Iāll think, āHmmm, I just like the song.ā Vocals also stick out a lot to me too. Some artists when they sing, it gives me chills. Like certain Daniel Caeser songs, and BeyoncĆ© sometimes. Some of the notes she hits, Iām just like, āHow can she do that?ā
Most of your playlist is slow, mellow music but one song that stuck out to me was the Gucci Mane song. Is there a reason you threw that on there?
I just really like what he was talking about. First of all, his last album was good as hell.
Mr. Davis?
Yeah Iām surprised they donāt play a lot more of his music on the radio. Thatās a really good album, and I liked what he was talking about on the song as afar as being black owned, which is funny because I want to come out with t-shirts that say that, because Iāve never seen that. That really stuck out to me, and him rapping about how he got out of jail, came back on, and was popping again.
When you first start listening to music you listen to whatās on the radio, and what kids in school are listening to, but then as you grow older you start to develop your own preferences and taste. How would you say those have evolved over time, and if there was one particular song, artist, or album that started that for you?
Iāve always loved music. I remember when my mom bought me my first CD, it was either Lil Bow Wow or Lil Romeo. And I listened to that CD every single day!
Which one?
The first one. With him on the front with the army bandana
Bow Wow?
No this was Lil Romeo. Bow Wow was the one where he had the dog on the front.
Which I found out was photoshopped later. Heās not really holding a dog on.
For real? Wow. But yeah I was always watching 106 & Park when I wasnāt supposed to be. Watching all the videos. Downloading music off of mp3 Rocket. I was getting really into music.
When was that? 106 & Park and mp3 Rocket?
106 & Park started that off. That was elementary school into middle school, and mp3 Rocket was around high school. Like all through high school, Limewire, all that stuff. Thatās when I started downloading songs that Iād never really heard of. I really got into Drake towards that moment. That was like 2010. What grade was I in?
I think that was 10th?
I think it was junior year. Yeah I really got into Drake. I was a fan and listened to all of his songs. Its funny because I really used to hate slow songs, I really only liked fast songs as a child. But then when I got older, I started to like slower songs, and then from there it went crazy. I was downloading N.E.R.D., all different types of artists I was interested in. And when I stared listening to Soundcloud I started getting into different types and feels of music. Iman Omari was the first person I ever listened to that wasnāt really Hip-Hop or R&B, but somewhere in the middle. He really introduced me to different types of artist like Kelela and others. It was crazy. It just happened so fast. Music, I guess I just matured with it. What I was attracted to started to mature with my age.
What role would you say music plays in your creativity fashion wise?
It definitely inspires me. I know sometimes when I listen to songs I create a music video for them in my head, and Iāll use that as inspiration for a photoshoot, or what I want to write a blog post about, small things like that. Music is definitely a big inspiration in my life because it keeps me going. It sets the mood for everything that I do.
Can you pick one song on your playlist and give us the story behind why itās on there?
āBlind Manā by Xavier Omar. I heard that song forever ago on Soundcloud, and you know Soundcloud doesnāt credit people all the time, so I had no idea who this man was. And after then I think I was on Pandora, you know Pandora will play random ass songs sometimes, Iāll be real shocked. I was listening and all of a sudden the song [āBlind Manā] came on. Iām like, āOh my God, I havenāt heard this song in forever,ā and I looked and saw that it was Xavier Omar. I had never heard of him so I downloaded his album and came to found out that he was on a lot of other songs that I actually liked and never knew who he was. So from there I grew to really really like that song. I like his vocals, and the way he sings. Thereās a lot of artists out here that people sleep on, and theyāre talented artists who people just donāt listen to, and itās crazy because thatās a beautiful song.

CALM DOWN, IT'S THE MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS WITH OUR FAVORITE DIVAS, DIVOS & FRESH NEW ARTISTS!
By DJ FR8-O
The world's most unpredictable awards show just threw us another curveball. Hosting this year's hottest night in music is comedian and actor Sebastian Maniscalco. Yeah, never heard of him either, but the outspoken Italian is ready to bring the laughs and the chutzpah back into the VMAs. Joining him will be all our favorite divas, divos and fresh new artists who've been dominating our playlists over the last 12 months. This year's ceremony is going to be a battle of the pop princesses with both Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift snatching 10 nominations each. Who will take home the most Moon Persons is yet to be seen, but here are my top picks. Ā
BEST NEW ARTIST Ava Max Billie Eilish H.E.R. Lil Nas X RosalĆa
Lizzo It may seem like Lizzo just came out of nowhere and went straight to the front of the class, but she's been schooling her fans since she was 14 years old. In an industry that puts so much pressure on image and tries to hide flaws with photoshop and camera tricks, Lizzo celebrates her curves and literally puts it all out there. Her confidence is only overshadowed by her talent, with a stream of hits and sold-out shows over the past year. Ā
BEST COLLABORATION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "SeƱorita" Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber: "I Don't Care" Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!"
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" As if she wasn't jaw-droppingly gifted all on her own, no one has ever brought the on-screen chemistry as Gaga and Cooper did in the big-screen blockbuster A Star is Born. The heat was so intense that it raised suspicions of the two being more than just co-stars. While those rumors have since been squashed, I still get a few raised hairs every time I hear their duet from the diva's Oscar-winning film.
BEST POP 5 Seconds of Summer: "Easier" Cardi B and Bruno Mars: "Please Me" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Khalid: "Talk" Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down"
Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Everyone has their opinion of what makes a great pop song, or in this case a great pop video, but I'm sure you would agree that Nick soaking in a claw foot tub and Joe tied up in his underwear would be somewhere at the top of the list. Not only does this earworm bury deep into your brain with its throwback vibe and razor-sharp hook, but watching these guys all grown up and having more fun than ever makes this clip as timeless as the track. Did I mention the bathtub?
BEST HIP HOP 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Cardi B: "Money" DJ Khaled (featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend): "Higher" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" Travis Scott (featuring Drake): "Sicko Mode"
2 Chainz (featuring Ariana Grande): "Rule the World" Is there nothing that Ari can't do? It's hard to tell who the actual guest artist is on this track, but are we really surprised? Even during her early days on "Bang Bang," she managed to hold her own with two powerhouse divas. Now it looks like she's the one bringing the noise.
BEST R&B Childish Gambino: "Feels Like Summer" H.E.R. (featuring Bryson Tiller): "Could've Been" Alicia Keys: "Raise a Man" Normani (featuring 6lack): "Waves" Anderson .Paak (featuring Smokey Robinson): "Make It Better"
Ella Mai: "Trip" After a 13 year absence from the show, the R&B category is back! Maybe it's because of the genre's resurgence into mainstream music; but whatever the reason, it's opening doors to a whole new pool of talent that may otherwise be overlooked, like this incredibly gifted and well-deserved artist.
BEST LATIN Anuel AA and Karol G: "Secreto" Benny Blanco, Tainy, Selena Gomez and J Balvin: "I Can't Get Enough" Daddy Yankee (featuring Snow): "Con Calma" Maluma: "Mala MĆa" RosalĆa and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura"
Bad Bunny (featuring Drake): "Mia" Watching this video reminded me of growing up in Miami, and showing up at the impromptu house party that someone hosted while their parents were away. Of course, Drake never showed up to any of them, but of all the nominees, this one captures what everyday Latin life is really about, minus all the half-naked women.
BEST DANCE The Chainsmokers (featuring Bebe Rexha): "Call You Mine" Clean Bandit (featuring Demi Lovato): "Solo" DJ Snake (featuring Selena Gomez, Ozuna and Cardi B): "Taki Taki" David Guetta, Bebe Rexha and J Balvin: "Say My Name" Marshmello and Bastille: "Happier"
Silk City and Dua Lipa: "Electricity" Music trends will come and go, but classic house will never go out of style. These guys took the essence of "Show Me Love" and "Finally" and weaved it into a track that's as fresh as it is nostalgic. Throw in Lipa's sultry vocals weaving a hypnotic melody and you've got yourself a dance anthem that no one can resist.
VIDEO FOR GOOD Jamie N Commons and Skylar Grey (featuring Gallant): "Runaway Train" Halsey: "Nightmare" The Killers: "Land of the Free" John Legend: "Preach" Lil Dicky: "Earth"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" It can't be a coincidence that this category debuted the same year as this track. In a time when LGBTQ lives are being attacked ā physically and politically ā on the daily, it's refreshing and inspiring to see an artist take a stand and put her influence where her mouth is. Not only is the track brilliantly written, but I haven't seen that many LGBTQ icons together since the Tony Awards.
BEST DIRECTION Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" (Director: Dave Meyers) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Director: Andrew Thomas Huang) Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" (Director: Hannah Lux Davis) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Director: Calmatic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Director: Dano Cerny)
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Director: Taylor Swift and Drew Kirsch) Okay, I know what you're thinking, "this queen must be a huge T-Swift fan, so he's voting for her in every category." Quite the contrary, actually. I've always been pretty lukewarm when it comes to the country-turned-pop singer, but any director that could wrangle that many divas in one video shoot and not end up on the nightly news deserves a trophy.
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS DJ Khaled (featuring SZA): "Just Us" (Visual Effects: GloriaFX, Sergii Mashevskyi and Anatolli Kuzmytskyi) Billie Eilish: "When the Party's Over" (Visual Effects: Ryan Ross and Andres Jaramillo) FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Visual Effects: Analog) Ariana Grande: "God Is a Woman" (Visual Effects: Fabrice Lagayette at Mathematic) LSD: "No New Friends" (Visual Effects: Ethan Chancer)
Taylor Swift (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco): "Me!" (Visual Effects: Loris Paillier and Lucas Salton for BUF VFX) I'd hand over the award for this vid just for the visual of a smoldering Brendon Urie alone, but if you've seen the clip you know the allure is more than just his pretty face. Reminiscent of a modern Moulin Rouge, the screen oozes with splashes of color, action and special effects galore, from start to finish. Ā
BEST ART DIRECTION BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Art Directors: JinSil Park and BoNa Kim (MU:E) Ariana Grande: "7 Rings" (Art Director: John Richoux) Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)" (Art Director: Christian Zollenkopf for Prettybird) Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" (Art Director: Brittany Porter) Kanye West and Lil Pump (featuring Adele Givens): "I Love It" (Art Director: Tino Schaedler)
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "SeƱorita" (Art Director: Tatiana Van Sauter) In a world where videos are trying to be bigger, brighter and bolder than the last, it takes a good eye to keep things in the background simple and let the singers take the spotlight. Subtlety is an art in itself, especially when it's meant to help a love story unfold before your eyes. My only note is that we need to see more of Shawn in his Calvin Klein's next time.
BEST CHOREOGRAPHY FKA Twigs: "Cellophane" (Choreographer: Kelly Yvonne) LSD: "No New Friends" (Choreographer: Ryan Heffington) Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello: "SeƱorita" (Choreographer: Calvit Hodge) RosalĆa and J Balvin (featuring El Guincho): "Con Altura" (Choreographer: Charm La'Donna) Solange: "Almeda" (Choreographers: Maya Taylor and Solange Knowles)
BTS (featuring Halsey): "Boy with Luv" (Choreographers: Son Sungdeuk and Quick Crew) K-pop isn't exactly on heavy rotation on my playlists, but I must give credit where credit is due. Sure, the competition shows some beautiful moves of their own, but this vid is all about color, dancing, and more dancing. Don't ask me what they're singing about, but I could tell they were having fun while singing it.
ARTIST OF THE YEAR Cardi B Billie Eilish Halsey Jonas Brothers Shawn Mendes
Ariana Grande This may seem like I'm playing faves here, but if you take a look at all the work the other nominees have put out in the last year together, they still don't add up to the number of albums, singles, videos and collaborations Ari has checked off her to-do list. While it may not have been ground-breaking, and there's no doubt this award will actually go to Billie Eillish, no one can argue that this diva has put in more blood, sweat and tears this year than any other artist in the biz.
SONG OF THE YEAR Drake: "In My Feelings" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper: "Shallow" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" Yeah, I'm going there again because this is an anthem we all need to hear and remember; not just this year, but for many years to come until the tables are turned, the planets are realigned and the haters finally take their seats for good.
VIDEO OF THE YEAR 21 Savage (featuring J. Cole): "A Lot" Billie Eilish: "Bad Guy" Ariana Grande: "Thank U, Next" Jonas Brothers: "Sucker" Lil Nas X (featuring Billy Ray Cyrus): "Old Town Road (Remix)"
Taylor Swift: "You Need to Calm Down" The same goes for the video! While others might have tried to battle hate with hate, Swift chose instead to take the high road, celebrate our community, shine a spotlight on some of our favorite LGBTQ icons and hold an honest mirror up at those with narrow minds. One little music video won't change the world overnight, but if it can inspire a new generation to think differently than the one before them, then that's something to get excited about.
The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Prudential Center in Newark on August 26th at 8 p.m. ET. Ā

Imagine If They Had Just Made Them Gay: SuperHero Edition
Out of all the numerous movie categories out there, the superhero genre has always struck me as insanely queer. Maybe itās all the tight, spandex outfits. Or the overly common āoutsider / sociality rejectā theme that can be found in almost every superhero movie known to man. But, regardless of the reason, most superhero movies tend to be one good, sweaty grappling fight scene away from being dubbed an LGBTQ+ instant classic. So then why arenāt there more queer superhero movies? Simple. Superheroes, by our antiquated societal definition, are supposed to be the epitome of hyper masculinity. They are super muscular, insanely good looking, and always manage to not only save the day, but also win over the affection of the damsel in distress while doing so. And of course, this naturally means, they canāt be associated to anything that remotely goes against those stereotype. Like being female. Or queerā¦ Or, god forbid, being a queer female. Yes, there have been some great strides made over the past few years to fix this general disparity and we are finally starting to see more of an overall variety when it comes to types of superheroes on the big screen *cough* Wonder Woman *cough*, but thereās still a long, long way to go. So, while I sit and wait for Hollywood to finally make my dreams come true and produce a honest to god queer female superhero movie, I pass the time by playing a few rounds of āImagine If they Had Just Made Them Gayā with some of my all-time favorite superhero movies. Ā Power Rangers (2017) Now, I know what youāre thinkingā¦ Power Rangers? Seriously? Out of all of the one to choose from in the vast lexicon of superhero movies, why Power Rangers? Isnāt it just a cheesy, big-screen version of the painfully bad 90ās kids TV show? Well, three reasons. One, the Power Rangers Movie is actually goodā¦ like surprisingly good, in an modern day Breakfast Club, extra angsty sorta way. Donāt believe me? Go on and watch it for yourself. Donāt worry. I can waitā¦ Done watching? Good. Now, letās continue. Secondly, the Power Rangers is one of the rare examples of an ensemble superhero movie that features more than one female lead. Crazy, right? Ā But, sadly, itās the truth. The Avengers? Black Widow. Fantastic Four? Sue Storm. The Justice League? Wonder Woman. You get the point. And lastly, itās the first superhero movie to feature a queer character. Granted, I use the word āqueerā loosely because this is only hinted at in one scene where Trini (aka the Yellow Ranger) gives an indirect ācoming outā speech after being asked if her problems were āgirl problems.ā But, at the same time, though, given her steady wardrobe of flannels and beanies, and faux shaved side of the head hairstyle, little to no verbal confirmation is actually needed. Trini, in short, is one rainbow flag away from a one woman pride parade. So, given all of the above, plus the overwhelming amount of Trini / Kimberly (aka the Pink Ranger) āgetting to know youā deleted scenes, why on earth didnāt they just take it one step further and make it a full-fledged queer falling in love story? Absolute head scratcher, right? Well, I still hold out hope for there being one in the next movie (thatās if Lionsgate comes to their senses and finally green lights a sequel), but in the meantime, imagine if Power Rangers went a little something like thisā¦ Kimberly Hart. Once head cheerleader and ex-teen royalty of Angel Grove High, falls from grace after leaking a nude pic of her ex-best friend to her then boyfriend. (side note: still have sooo many questions as to why she had this pic to begin with. Is this a straight girl thing? Cause, if not, it so screams gay in a āI have memorized every Tegan and Sara song known to manā sorta way.) After giving herself an impromptu bob in the high school bathroom during Saturday detention, Kimberly happens to stumble upon four other high school social rejects late one night at the local quarry and they proceed to make a life changing discovery in the way of five oddly colored, intergalactic gems. Quickly coming to the realization that they suddenly now all possess superpowers thanks to the mysteriously gems, the group returns to the quarry the next day in an attempt to figure out what the hell is going on. And itās at that very moment, that Kimberlyās whole life changesā¦ Cue Trini. Angel Groveās very own death metal loving, yoga practicing, resident pocket-sized queer. Sheās feisty, sarcastic, and knows just how to impress a girl with her climbing up the side of a rock face and then leaping over an enormous cavern skills. Unable to hide her gay, Kimberly stumbles her way through a painfully awkward conversation where she tries to turn on the charm and convince Trini to come with them. And when that doesnāt work, she decides to just bite the bullet make a move (literally) but grabbing hold of Trini, throwing them right over the side of a cliff. And so begins the all too familiar āis it or isnāt it a dateā montage. Itās all fun and games, until a gold obsessed villain named Rita shows up and decides to pay a late night visit to Trini. Rita proceeds to rough Trini up as a warning to the rest of the rangers and in the process fully ticks off Kimberly. Out for blood, Kimberly convinces the rest of the rangers to go after Rita. But, like most novice superheroes, the are beyond ill prepared and not only do they get their asses handed to them but the run also results in Billy ( aka the Blue Ranger) getting temporarily killed. After a quick regroup back at the ship for a prep talk and a minor supernatural resurrection, the rangers go after Rita once again, this time sporting brand spanking new suits and prehistoric themed vehicles. An epic battle ensues and in a sudden life and death moment, the light bulb finally clicks for both Trini and Kimberly. They want to be togetherā¦ No, scratch that. They NEED to be together. And right now. With the burst of extra motivation, Kimberly and Trini lead the charge and help the boys send Rita on a one way trip to deep space and then sneak off to celebrate with one anotherā¦ againā¦ and againā¦ and againā¦ Ā Hancock (2008) Again, I know what youāre thinkingā¦ Power Rangers is one thing, but Hancock? Ā Not only is it a mediocre movie at best, itās not even based off of a pre-existing comic franchise. I whole-heartily agree that Hancock has its fair share of problems. For starters, the main one being the casting of Will Smith as Hancock himself. Now, donāt get me wrong. I love Will Smith. There are roles that are just good fits for him and then there are the other onesāthe ones like Hancock. And then thereās Jason Bateman. Jason Bateman always plays one type of character and one type of character onlyā¦ Michael Bluth. And Michael Bluth should never ever exist within a superhero movie. But, looking beyond its problems, Hancock does have something going for it that most superhero movies, more often than not, tend to severely lackāan original and unique story. Hancockās plot at its core is an unrequited love story. Two superheroes, who are destined to find one another time and time again regardless of the situation, yet the mere presence of one another is so toxic that being together will eventually lead to their deaths. Sound vaguely familiar? Like something you mightāve seen in real life once or twice? Thatās because this plot could also double as a description for roughly 65% of all queer relationships. Who hasnāt had a friend (or ten) break up with the same girl time and time again only to get back together with her a few months later because āthey canāt help themselvesā? So, given that itās plot is insanely queer to begin with, imagine if Hancock went something like thisā¦ (Sidenote: My photoshop skills are good, but not THAT good. So, every time you see Will Smith, just imagine an amazing actress insteadā¦ Like Samira Wiley) Hancock, a rough around the edges queer superhero, is known for two things. Protecting the citizens of greater Los Angeles from a wide array of criminal activity and creating an insane amount of collateral damage while doing so. In short, Hancock has a MAJOR perception problem. But does she care? Chalk it up to years of being dubbed an āoutsiderā or a superhuman sized chip on her shoulder, but Hancock just doesnāt seem to care what anyone thinks about her. Sheās a superhero and that means show up, kick some ass, and save the day. End of story. Thereās just no need for anything (or anyone) else. But, then one day, Hancockās world is turned upside down when she happens to save the life of a lovable but super generic PR specialist named Ray. Beyond grateful, Ray makes it his personal mission, not only to befriend Hancock, but also to help her turn her public image around. New clothes. New attitude. And of course, new social circles. Hancock begrudging goes along with it all, including agreeing to attend a family dinner, where she happens to discover that Rayās wife Mary looks oddly familiar. And suddenlyā¦ BAM! Hancock finds herself inexplicably drawn to Mary. She simply canāt get enough of the woman and needs to be around her 24/7. Mary, though, wants nothing to do with Hancock. Sheās not only strangely standoffish, but seems to make up an excuse to leave the room whenever Hancock appears. Dying to win Mary over, Hancock attempts to learn more about her and in the process discovers that Mary, in fact, is a superhero as well. But before Hancock can confront Mary on this unique shared similarity, Mary falls deathly ill and is hospitalized. No one seems to know what the problem is and to make matters worse, Hancock is affected as well, but only when sheās in proximity to Mary. Hancock is pushed to the brink of insanity while trying to unearth what is causing Maryās illness. Unable to handle her feelings, she goes on a crime-fighting bender and after being hit on the head by a flying piece of debris, suddenly remembers who exactly Mary is. Mary is Hancockās eternal soulmate and, in a cruel twist of fate, also her ultimate kryptonite. Lifetime after lifetime, they are destined to find one another, only to inadvertently poison each other to death by their mere presence. Not wanting to put Mary through anymore unnecessary pain and suffering, Hancock decides that the only sane and logical thing to do is for her to disappear forever and live out the rest of her life in utter isolation. She goes to see Mary one last time to say her goodbyes, but for she can carry out her plan, Mary stops her. Thanks to modern technology, thereās a way they can be together and yet be apart at all at the same timeā¦ So, what do you think? Ā What other superhero movies do you think would be better if they had just made it gay? http://dlvr.it/PjNdz1

COMIC TEA PARTY START!
Good day everyone~! This weekās Comic Tea Party is now officially beginning~! Today we are discussing Woohooligan! by Samuel Dealey~! (http://www.woohooligan.com/) For those new or in need of a reminder, discussions about the comic are freeform, so please feel free to bring up whatever you wish. However, every 30 minutes I will be dropping in a discussion question to help those who would like a prompt. These questions are totally OPTIONAL to answer, and you can pay them no mind if you wish. If you miss out on any though, theyāll be pinned for the duration of the chat once theyāre posted~! Remember, constructive criticism is allowed, but the primary focus here is to have fun and appreciate the amazing comics that the community makes~! As a bonus, each chat a top comment will be picked and featured in the archives and on an ad for CTP! All that being said, letās get started and have a great discussion!
QUESTION 1. What is your favorite strip in the comic so far and why?
SamDealey
Hey, everybody! I'm Sam! Don't worry about me being here. You can ask me questions, give advice, dog on things you didn't like, or just ignore me, however you prefer.
Also, feel free to contact me if I can help with any of your projects (research, promo, tech, etc.) -- and you can get me on Twitter here: http://twitter.com/datafaucet
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
glad you could be here again sam!
lets see. i think my favorite strip is actually one of the ones that was super early on: http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/4 as a fan of perspective, i really just enjoyed that play on words since ive always thought vanishing point was a....strange choice of terminology for the concept. so i enjoyed seeing it taken super literally XD
SamDealey
A lot of people have said they relaly prefer either the early stuff or the late stuff... my style has changed a lot.
Yeah, that vanishing point strip isn't very widely popular, but a lot of artists really enjoy it.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i can see why theres that preference difference. the switch the late stuff was a bit awkward since it became more focused. but i think both sides have their merit. though admittedly in this case i do think a lot of my fave strips were the ones earlier on.
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/23 that one as well was one my favorites. my family is 1) both cursed to never understand technology and 2) generally unwilling to listen to me. so man do i wish i was that guy who would reply so sarcastically and lead them astray. XD too identifiable
SamDealey
I also went through several visual style changes that were caused by changing tools... I switched to all digital when I couldn't find an affordable wide-format scanner in 2009, did some stuff for a while in Adobe Illustrator (and colored in Photoshop), then switched to Manga Studio 4.5 ... even the upgrade to MS 5 I think unexpectedly changed some things.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
WLLO
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
its bound to happen naturally anyway for a comic as old as this one. ppl change, but that also makes it interesting to watch. especially since your comic is one that will tackle current activities so it can be an interesting time capsule of sorts to see how humors and situations changed.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Oh hey Sam!
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
welcome super~!
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Thanks!
Sorry I'm a few moments late, was catching myself up on some art but I'm here now!
SamDealey
Hey, Justin! I think you might be the first one here.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
lol
Looks like I am
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
any favorite strips youd like to share super?
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/313
This one's pretty good.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
that one made me feel bad for telemarketers XD if only cause most of the ppl calling are sadly just trying to make a living. but i do enjoy that disintegration image XD
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
For a sec i thought that was a guy using a fidget spinner.
SamDealey
lol @ fidget spinner ... yeah, it's been shared a few times, but I hadn't heard much commentary on it... I don't really have anything against the people who work in telemarketing either, I just thought it was a fun joke about what sometimes feels like our societal priorities.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Lol
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
ah there is one strip i wanted to ask a question about
while youre here
SamDealey
Please do.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Also sharing another one I thought was pretty clever
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/308
though I would never replace a computer with an iPad
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/238 this one with ayn rand. was there a lot of dialogue on this page just because there needed to be a lot of dialogue or was this intentional as an homage to the fact that ayn rand's novels are chalked full of monologues?
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
brb, need to go do something real quick
I'll be back!
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
QUESTION 2. Besides characters in Amityās storyline, there have also been several other recurring characters over the comicās history. Whether old or recent, were there any characters that you particularly connected with? If so, what about them connected with you and/or made you laugh? Are there any characters youād like to see make a return in some fashion, and in what way do you think they might still have potential? Lastly, in regards to Amityās storyline, what other famous people do you think might pop up in hell and what do you think will happen with them?
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Hiyo... I made it, but I only had a chance to read the series through to about comic #120. ^.^
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
thats okay. at least thats something
glad to have you here math
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
My fave comics are actually the ones with the parenting. I particularly liked the "grow a beard" one (I don't recall the number) as it ended up having a callback in a later entry.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i really miss that sophisticated zombie who was fighting for zombie rights. for the shallow reason i really enjoyed his personality.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Nigel was cool!
SamDealey
I wish I had been that meta on the Ayn Rand pages... heh... they're super-wordy like that because I had a hard time figuring out how to make her explain her "philosophy" more succinctly
Thanks, Math!
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I obviously gravitated to the parenting ones what with handling the 6 week old here, with a name very similar to 'Alex'. ^.^
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Oh hey a Math!
SamDealey
Ayn-Rand Libertarianism was very deliberately added to that story though -- it's a part of a longer meta-theme in that story about Heaven and Hell and our concepts of morality
Oh, yeah, the conversations with my oldest daughter. heh...
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/306 How'd I find this strip
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I'm leery of the political ones, I admit. I get the reasoning for them, of course (I tend to read the commentaries too, which is a large part of why it takes me a while to archive browse) but they make me facepalm more than smile.
That said, Nigel as an avatar for immigrant/racist tendencies was kind of genius.
I like when it's subtle that way.
Well, subtle in my dictionary.
Oh, and to be clear, I'm not facepalming over the comic, it's over the sadness of the world we live in.
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ Question 2 - ummm... I don't know that I'm any more connected to any specific recurring characters than others -- I think I can see splashes of myself in most of them but in a really generic way, like basic humanity type stuff
Thanks for the clarification, Math!
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I guess I've enjoyed Alex as a recurring character.
SamDealey
Oh, yeah, I don't relate to my daughter at all.
<sarcasm>
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Lol
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
ah that strip was definitely topical @Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ . reminds me of waking up everyday seeing trump in the news doing something. @SamDealey darn it. ah well. it kind of works as an homage to rand's monologues anyway. thank you for answering though.
i did enjoy the strips about alex though. i thought that was just nice and heartwarming
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Yeah, Trump's life is like, documented to end and back
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I wonder if it'll be in my future.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Have millions of people documenting every single pun you make?
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
No, conversations with my daughter related to my writing and math comics.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
probably. O_O i mean you have a daughter so step 1 down that road is complete
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Sounds reasonable
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I remember when I first started reading, I was amused by Death in a couple of the comics. With using the opportunity of a reaped psychiatrist for a session, and commisserating with Rudolph.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Death vs a super badass Rudolph
sounds like some kind of sitcom
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ - Are there any characters youād like to see make a return in some fashion, and in what way do you think they might still have potential? The princes of hell haven't appeared much lately with the exception of Lucifer -- they do have some involvement in the continuing Hellbent story. I've also thought about more Nigel strips where he struggles to work with other people on a PR campaign for zombies that involves the creation of a TV sitcom about a zombie family
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
yes. zombie family tv sitcom
that would be amazing
especially if theres a forced laugh track
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
By the way, what was the deal with some of the comics saying "alternate ending in the comments"... was that only on deviantart?
I want to make a Rosanne joke, but I think I'd regret it.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
The world must have zombie sitcom
heck if we got a sitcom about dinosaurs what's stopping the undead from getting a chance to shine
and the jokes would be built around them being undead and general horror tropes
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
(The Rosanne joke is about the zombie sitcom, not alternate endings.)
I've been reading onwards in the background, and just got to the Klingon section. Ohmygawd, Klingons with doe-eyes.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i enjoyed the klingons strip. i just really enjoyed how it was framed cause i think it made the jokes work well
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ - Lastly, in regards to Amityās storyline, what other famous people do you think might pop up in hell and what do you think will happen with them? The current official title for Amity's story is Hellbent (I know it's not readily apparent). Most of the famous people in Hell are there as a counterpoint to show that anyone who's remotely interesting doesn't get into heaven. They mostly don't plug into the plot in a meaningful way, but just are there to remind you that the interesting people are in hell, like Mark Twain and Edgar Allen Poe playing poker with Pappy, or Freddy Mercury who was just a punchline. It's implied that Amity slept with Jimmi Hendrix and Katherine Hepburn has become an odd kind of mother-figure to her (though Hepburn avoided having children throughout her life). The only other historical figure I currently plan to include for plot reasons is Nietzsche (god I can never spell his name)... I don't want to give too much away, but remember that he talked a bit about "the soul" and Ayn Rand really idolized a kind of misconception of his idea of the ubermensch -- "superman".... oh, and related to that also Atlas and I think Hercules, but they're only going to be on one page.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Ayn Rand meets Superman I could see.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
yes i was hoping for nietzsche!
throws confetti
QUESTION 3. Though much of the comic series is non-sequential humor, the latter half of the series features a continuing story line involving Amy/Amity and her experiences in Heaven and Hell. What do you think will happen with Amity now that she is pregnant? Will she keep the baby, or will she decide having a child with Lucifer is too difficult? If she keeps it, what do you think the consequences will be? Do you think Amity will ever see her grandmother again, or will her grandmother stay in Heaven? Additionally, do you think Amityās new reputation might get her into trouble, and if so in what manner? In general, what do you personally take away message wise from this storyline?
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
alas not the question for you math XD
cause this is the latter half
SamDealey
@MathTans the Pun šPrinceš re: Klingons - Thanks! re: alternate endings -- for a long time I published alternate endings as voting incentives on TopWebComics -- you could only see the latest one. I still do it occasionally, but the bonus panels or alt-endings are now on Patreon, where all the backers have access to the whole archive. A lot of those alt endings and bonus panels are also in the books whether printed or electronic.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Yup, I'm not that far yet.
SamDealey
I also give out vol #1 for free to subscribers on my Woohooligan Weekly Dick Joke Advocate newsletter. http://woohooligancomics.tumblr.com/freecomic
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Ahhh, I see. Incentives is clever... it's nice when you have enough of an audience for that.
Though I suppose this is a heck of a looong runner. I'm impressed by that.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
in regards to question 3, i think amity will keep the baby. and i look forward to the baby shower. O_O gotta invite everyone who can make it entirely too awkward
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
The Vegas strip I just got to reminds me of the Yuri/Yaoi one from much earlier. I liked that one. (Those who know me know I'm always up for some yuri.)
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
since math is still on earlier strips. http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/123/ i liked this skyrim one cause thats not where i expected the joke to go at all. never know what to expect when it comes to the arrow in the knee meme
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
....I phrased that very badly.
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ That's a lot of questions, but I think I can answer them in pretty short order here: - Amity is currently worried that she's carrying the antichrist -- I think that's warranted -- I don't want to give too much away about that plot, but Lucifer confirmed it's his son in the latest couple pages. - Keeping the baby and/or consequences, well -- spoilers. -- which of course means now you know the baby will be born - Amity will see Nanna again -- it's an important plot point, followed by some fun sex jokes - So far the trouble Amity's reputation has gotten her into has been largely self-inflicted -- she's become paranoid that Lucifer's billions of children are going to mob her, except that Delilah, who she knows is one of Lu's kids has already said basically "you get used to a lot of bullshit rumors around my dad -- it happens". But with her now carrying the baby in particular, that doesn't mean Amity's going to be less paranoid. - Messages taken away from this story? ... I don't know about "taken away" since I'm writing it, but I will say that I know what will be on the last page, and I bawl every time I think about it. It's not sad, just ... I hope it will be moving for others as well.
@MathTans the Pun šPrinceš re: long running - Thanks! I feel like I've not done a great job of keeping up with it -- like, when I did my latest Kickstarter I had it on hiatus for about a half a year. I'm fulfilling it now and just getting back to creating new pages. That's why it's only 317(?) pages after 12 years. If I'd published 1 a week consistently, it would be over 600.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Oh wow
also that comic
This is why you wear knee guards
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Eh, real life happens. I've had my comic on and off a bunch.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
yeah no shame in that. its better to do projects like this at your own pace, whatever that pace needs to be.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Agreed(edited)
SamDealey
Oh, you meant "I'm always down on some yuri"
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
>Two females interacting >"Is this yuri?"
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i was glad that amity bonded with delilah. but i also just like delilah cause she was a surprisingly down to earth character.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Pfffft.
Now I'm at the Nerdgasm set. I have been to some of those kinds of panels.
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ Aww! Thank you so much, that's such a complement re: Delilah.
SamDealey
Delilah is a succubus and although she's not central to the plot, I hoped I could do some justice to addressing kink-shaming and sexual double-standards.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
ooh?
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i really enjoyed in nerdgasm that part where they were like "the homestuck panel moved" and then suddenly the room empties. it reminded me of how 2 real that was back in the day where everyone and their mother was into homestuck and cosplaying trolls.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
A succubus as a recurring character sounds interesting.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
yeah i really like delilah all around. cause i do think shes a good avatar for sexual double-standards and i also like her dynamic with amity cause of the whole dating her grandfather thing XD
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Makes family reunions awkward.
SamDealey
There will be a baby shower -- it won't be large, mostly the princes of hell, or... well, 4 of them will be there... Leviathan (Envy) won't fit in the room but will send a gift (snake oil) - Satan (Wrath) doesn't do babies, but will go half on a gift with Scratch (Greed) of war bonds. Bubby (Gluttony) will give her a live pig (he thinks it's better fresh), I'm not sure yet what Mody (Lust) will give her, but suffice to say it will be creepy... Lucifer will get her something as well, but I'm also not sure what yet, and Belphegor (sloth) won't be there, because Cthulhu fhtagn
Pappy, Delilah, Hepburn and maybe Nanna will be there...
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
maybe Nanna?
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Asmodeus?
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i dont think this will be a relaxing baby shower
will grumpy cat be invited? O_O
SamDealey
Asmodeus is Mody -- Lust
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
QUESTION 4. Though many of the comicās strips revolve around nerd culture, there are also tons of strips that are topical to life, current events, and history. Were there any of these kinds of strips that you felt were personally relevant to you? What did you think of some of the more serious strips (like the one about trickle-down economics)? Regardless of strip type, were there any titles that caught your eye and made you see the strip differently? Finally, since weāre speaking on humor, were there any jokes that you struggled to understand?
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Anything Trump related, lol
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Ahhh, I see.
Oh, I'm pretty sure I miss a large chunk of the jokes. It's a bit different from my sense of humour.
SamDealey
Yeah, tackling trickle-down economics was interesting, because it's one of those subjects where you can kind of expect to not get much traction, but as I get older, I feel like that's one of a handful of subjects not getting enough attention, and I thought if people enjoy Adam Conover, then I should be able to get people interested in important subjects like that
I just now realized a lot of those questions aren't directed at me.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i really liked the visuals you used for the trickle-down economics one. i think they were well-chosen and well-placed to help explain things
thats ok
SamDealey
Thank you!
I am a huge fan of Conover's work by the way.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I've reached Canada Day. We try.
I found reading your answers to the questions interesting, for what it's worth!
SamDealey
Thanks, Math!
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
ive overall enjoyed the breaks into the serious. i think theyve been interesting and well-researched. and sometimes its also just nice to break from comedy for a second
SamDealey
@āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ Did I throw you with any of the titles?
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Wait, there's alt-text on these too?! When did that start? (Sooo much depth to all this...)
SamDealey
lol -- I don't remember when I started adding alt text... and I'm not sure if my most recent pages have them either...
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I'll echo Rebel on the well-researched part. It's the sort of thing that stands out if it's not there, but is easy to miss when done right.
SamDealey
Oh, I've also started publishing more comedy in other mediums lately as well -- prose on my Tumblr, and some YouTube videos -- currently working on a YouTube about free speech
Here's a recent one about alt-right propaganda
https://youtu.be/Xy0Barrlw3U
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
nah i wouldnt say thrown. i thought they were interesting for some of them and just had good plays on words. http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/80/ like that one for instant since its playing on the phrase "to hell with TOPIC HERE" and turning it into a jersey joke. XD
SamDealey
I know -- it's not comics.
Oh, yeah, back to Jersey
I'm not sure how many people noticed me using "rigor" as a slur to tie it to the word nigger
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
That's exactly the sort of thing I'd miss.
SamDealey
short for rigor-mortis, but convenient that it rhymes
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Did someone say YT videos?
You should try to see about making dubbed/animated versions of strips
SamDealey
The YT vid I'm working on right now is way too long -- I need to kill about 50% of it to get the length down to reasonable
I'm not sure if I'll delve into trying to animate any of my strips ... genuine animation is too labor intensive (I know, my oldest daughter, Alex does it), and I feel weird about still frame panels with voiceovers
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
thats fair enough. animation is a lot of hard work.
i didnt notice the rigor thing sadly. mostly just cause my mind read it as "generic insult slur"
like if you yelled banana angry enough you could probably turn that into a slur
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Maybe you can hire Alex to do it.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
so didnt connect with what it was standing in for
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Banana republic?
SamDealey
I love the phrase "GOAT SUCKER!" as an insult
It's the literal translation of the word "chupacabra"
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
Things I learned from watching the X-Files.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
yeah. goat sucker always struke me as a funny insult cause of that XD
SamDealey
Ha! I didn't even know that was in an X-Files episode... I've seen a lot of the series, but not all of it
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
http://www.woohooligan.com/comics/209/ this is another strip i liked since ive been trying to find some of my faves. this taps into every problem ive ever had with zombie movies, particularly that last panel.
SamDealey
I never did see the fluke man
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
I tend to either see all of a series or very little. It was a fluke. ^.^
No Nigel cameo there?
I've reached 200, woo.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i have to admit i was expecting nigel there
but then nigel didnt come
and i shed a tear inside
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
The reversal of expectations.
SamDealey
Nigel cameo in what?
Oh, the zombie movie thing
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
r.i.p. Nigel
SamDealey
Yeah, Nigel doesn't really fit in zombie movies -- he would just be giving it bad reviews on Yelp.
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
SJ: That's zombie humour for you.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Yup
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
i hope his reviews sound overly fancy with lots of big words
ah this reminds! i also liked see moneybags a lot. what a perfect stand in for basically rich corporations.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Cools~
SamDealey
Oh, Uncle Pennybags from monopoly?
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
I was surprised to see him actually
SamDealey
I always draw him with a monocle -- he's never had one in any of the official Milton Bradley merch
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
One of the things I want to address before the end here is the obvious passion. Not only in terms of some of the details in the comic art (from fake twitters to shading) but also the commentary afterwards. Lots of work went into this.
Kudos.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Seconding that, there's lot sof entertaining fun to be had with this series and I hope you never let anything stop ya, Sam.
SamDealey
Thanks, Math!
fake twitters?
Thanks, Justin!
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
One of the comics I saw in the last hour or so had a fake twitter feed... all about foodstuffs.
I remember the most random things.
Superjustingo of āØTimeš&SpaceāāØ
Np!
SamDealey
I've found often that the pages where I have lengthy commentaries end up being shared a lot more -- like, I was really nervous doing a passage where Amity talked to Trayvon Martin, but those pages ended up being shared a bunch
MathTans the Pun šPrinceš
You have a pretty amazing fanbase.
āØš± RebelVampire š±āØ
