Okay, last week I made this post and in it, I said that what makes buddie is time, everything that happened to them, and then I corrected myself by saying what actually makes them something you can't fight against was Christopher but that that was a different post. Well, this is that different post.

So buddie. We have 2 main characters whose main screen partners are each other. Something that makes Buck and Eddie different is that Eddie was written in for Buck. Connie leaving left a gap on the show, they lost the dispatcher and Buck lost the thing he was written for, since s1 Buck is very much there to be the love interest, to give Abby something, and the bridge between the firehouse and dispatch. Since the space was surrounding Buck, they filled that space through him. They added Maddie in. But Maddie alone didn't really fill the void, a sibling dynamic doesn't really fill that space because Buck would need a more constant scene partner, so in comes Eddie. Giving him a partner in the field plus adding Maddie in fills that gap. So they gave Buck a best friend.

The thing is, in a universe where Christopher isn't a variable, where Eddie is just some guy Buck's age going through a messy divorce at the same time Buck is coming to terms with Abby abandoning him making them bond, the basis of their relationship is something completely different, and it is something you can fight against if you really want to separate them and give them other endgame love interests. If they are just best friends, you have a lot less at stake, so you can put the space between them a lot easier if necessary. A new love interest would be fighting against one person. That's a fair fight. That's a fight a new person can win if introduced correctly.

But in the universe we have, Christopher is the thing that makes them bond. The foundation of their relationship is Buck stepping up to help Eddie and Eddie deciding that that would warrant Buck his full loyalty and the relationship builds on that. Major movements in their dynamic are marked by Chris (and death, but again, different post). Chris' existence brings them together, with Buck deciding to introduce Eddie to Carla, then the tsunami shows us that there is a deeper trust between them, and then the will reveal intensifies all that and seals them together as an unconventional family (it all makes me wonder about the way they took Chris off the board, why would they do that if they aren't about to use him to snap the last piece into place to get them together since Eddie makes statements through Chris).

All this means that a love interest isn't fighting a best friend, which is something you can make work, a love interest is up against a life partner and child. Since Eddie is a single parent and the person that Buck turns to, they aren't really best friends to the audience, they are partners. And the show made a conscious effort to develop Buck's bond with Christopher outside of his relationship with Eddie. They have been adding that in since Eddie's introduction, the tsunami makes it clear, but season 4 is the one that puts the focus on Buck and Chris by showing us Buck at the house in a casual setting then making Buck a trusted adult Chris runs when upset with Eddie to then making Buck step up to take care of Chris before he knew about the will. They built upon that in s5 and then during s6 they really drove home the point that Buck sees Chris as his and that's when we start getting casually parenting, with the cookies, then the conversation they have in s7. The 3 of them have their individual connections, so for all intents and purposes, they are a family.

The chances of you actually convincing an audience that a new person (especially a new person that only exists as a love interest, since we established on the other post that audiences aren't inclined to care about characters they don't see a lot) is a better fit than an established family unit are null. It will literally not happen.

To give someone new a chance they would need to separate Buck and Eddie, they need to effectively break their partnership while building the fuck out of the new person, but that means making Buck abandon Christopher. And that's the point that would make audiences riot. The whole time Chris has been on the show, Buck was made into someone Christopher could count on like a parent. By s3 Buck and Eddie were having custody battles at a grocery store. And if you need to keep Buck in Chris' life, you can't separate Buck from Eddie. And that's what makes them IT. They can get away with separating Buck and Eddie, they cannot get away with making Buck step out on Christopher. So there's no way around them into someone else. It would never feel as satisfying because they can't really exist in a space that's like "I'm Eddie, this is my husband Buck, that's our kid Christopher, and that's Buck's boyfriend whatever" it gets boring. Especially when the show isn't exactly trying to establish the other love interest as someone worth rooting for, as explained on the other post.

so if you ship buddie you know buck and eddie's relationship in canon is like that™️ for tons of reasons but the one that gets me the most is, i think, best explained in the form of a graphic

this is obviously a simplistic depiction thats only featuring main family characters but it's to show how most of our 7 mains are connected together with specifically stated familial ties to each other and other major side characters. their storylines often overlap or involve the other main characters they're close to and they have at least 2 prominent connections to other mains. they all have many lovely little triangles. except eddie. eddie's storylines almost exclusively feature buck, chris, and other less prominent characters that aren't related to the rest of the cast like shannon, other love interests, or his parents.

while, of course, eddie is close with the rest of the 118 and considers them family and has tons of scenes with hen, chimney, and bobby, he's often not directly involved in their specific storylines and they aren't really involved in his. i mean he's barely even talked to athena or maddie on screen. his next closest relationship is obviously bobby. eddie and bobby have a stong connection as captain and teammate, as catholics, as widowers. bobby is a mentor to eddie a lot and gives him advice on his issues but he's often working as an outside observer to eddie's storyline, not directly involved either. and bobby often has storylines that don't involve eddie directly at all. it's nowhere near the same as bobby and buck or as close as like athena and hen's relationship

the show has just made buck eddie's most prominent connection time and time again when they've had literal years to expand his relationships with the other main characters. because this doesn't even include how athena and maddie often have scenes/storylines together or how karen and chimney have been friends since before meeting hen.

anyway my main point is give eddie diaz some more branches goddamit!

i'm still stuck on the scene where ana brings chris to the firehouse during the blackout, but specifically buck's behavior in it. like. god, there is SO MUCH to unpack there.

buck sees them and he immediately zeroes in on christopher, doesn't even so much as BLINK in ana's direction. he has THEE biggest, brightest smile on his face when he greets chris, and then that "looks like the new chief is here" said in that tone, paired with the great big double-armed bear hug?? like, hello!!!!! parent behavior!!!!!

but then the way he just. Does Not acknowledge ana after that?? and like. we KNOW they've met before. even if there was no like dedicated scene for a formal meeting, we know they've met — and like that was at the hospital, where their minds were very obviously elsewhere (eddie), so i wouldn't even necessarily classify that as like a proper meeting, y'know? it was surely pretty hurried, a basic exchange of names, maybe a handshake or something, but like that's the extent of it, i'm sure. there's no way they were like sitting there chatting it up or making any effort to get to know one another when the most important thing in, supposedly, both of their lives was in the other room, injured.

and like i doubt they've met outside of that instance too. so like when ana shows up with chris that would be the perfect opportunity for buck to like reintroduce himself (which, i fully believe he would, if it was literally anybody else), or for eddie to make the introduction, like officially, or something. but neither one of them do that. and buck? he doesn't even offer a simple hi. doesn't even look her way.

which is like. WILD. because — one, buck is a human :D emoticon, and he is a chronic yapper and he fully gives off "puppy dog at the park that runs up to everything and everyone to say hello" energy, so like i do not believe for one second that he wouldn't even say hi to her! and two, like. wouldn't you think that, as eddie's best friend, buck would be idk a little more enthusiastic about meeting her? the woman who, supposedly, his best friend is getting serious with? the woman who, supposedly, is meant to be making him happy? the woman who, supposedly, is someone important to eddie? and to chris? like, idk as eddie's best friend, and chris' too for that matter, i would certainly be invested in trying to build a relationship there!

but like. buck so clearly isn't? and this is all before he and eddie have the talk about how ana/the relationship with her is the thing causing eddie's panic attacks and how he doesn't actually think he loves her in the way he should and that he's just. trying to force it. so like buck doesn't even have that context to apply here!! he is just. Like That with ana from the get go!!

and the thing is — ana has literally done nothing. like. she has not said or done anything to buck, or to eddie or chris, that would make buck's behavior towards her make any sense. she literally just. exists. in the vicinity of eddie and chris. that's it.

so W H Y is buck soooo icy with her?

he does not need to be coddled and told about how hard it was for her when she was actively being just as ableist as ramon and helena. he is 13 years old; if he can make a decision on where he lives, he can hear the truth of how awful his mother was so that maybe he can actually provide sufficient context to the actions his dad has taken

yes, she was very young when christopher was born, and no eddie was not a perfect husband/father in the beginning; but the point is she didn’t even give him a chance to even begin processing his PTSD when he cane back, immediately vilifying him for everything before doing the same exact thing as what… petty revenge? giving him a taste of his own medicine? you’re an adult woman with a son who needed you and you walked out on him because you didn’t want the stress. okay, that’s fine, that’s your choice

but don’t show up once he’s older demanding to see him because “he’s my son too” and then proceeding to shame eddie, the one who HAS been there for him after you left, for something he already has made clear he regrets, and has also atoned for by stepping up and actually taking responsibility rather than shirking them the moment it got ‘too hard’ when his parents would have been more than willing to let him do

and then to try and manipulate him with the whole “he’s my son” “we can be a family again” bullshit as a way to get back into his pants— only to dip as soon as things start to get serious again?

and on top of that, the “she was just a girl” argument doesn’t even hold up because yeah, she WAS just a girl. she’s not just a girl anymore. she’s a grown adult woman shirking her responsibility because she doesn’t want to be a mother. That’s all well and good; she doesn’t have to be a mother. But once you make that decision, don’t go crawling back acting like you weren’t the one to actively decide to leave. You’re an adult, making adult decisions, and you need to handle the adult consequences of those adult decisions.

also there is no way buck would EVER look at the way she treated chris and eddie and then actively be friends with her. friend-ly maybe, civil at best, but he would never look at the lasting hurt she caused those two and actively chose to persue a friendship with her.

ok i was thinking about this last night when i couldn't sleep but it's crazy how buck's filled the roles for so many people in his life who have lost someone who used to fill that role. like bobby lost his kids, now buck's like a son to him. chimney lost his pseudo-brother, and now buck's practically his brother-in-law. eddie lost his wife, now he has buck as a partner and best friend. chris lost a parent, now buck is chris's godfather. maddie lost her brother, then with buck born at least she still had him. this next episode is literally gonna break these characters i can see it now

I think Eddie would be Aphrodite bcs obviously he is pretty, but also he is really good at talking? Like maybe his rizz is not the Best, but he talks so romantic, and he really LOVE a lot, like his kid, he loves him a lot. Also Aphrodite is also a war goddess, so he fight when he is confused and angry, because he knows that he's not "loving" right (his Family is hurt, his relationships aren't really love, etc)

And for Buck, I have THEORIES, like at first I started with Aphrodite too bcs the need to be loved is right there. But obviously we cant have both being siblings here, soo (walk with me on this one) "The guy who likes to fix things" Hephaestus,

Now, we know that Buck is Smart but he is not always super thorough with everything, but he likes to Fix things, more specifically problems.

Eddie needs someone to take care of Christopher? Fix

The 118 will not have christmas dinner with Family? Fix

The wall? Fix (literally)

The skateboard problem? Fix (literally)

He loves fix things so much that he overdo it. He overcompesate, He overfix

He doesn't love his LI? He ask him/her to Move with him "fix"

His friends can't have a baby? "fix" (Even when he want his own kids)

He can't help Eddie with Chris? He help him to move then (even when that would send him on a spiral) "fix"

losing my mind a bit, and need to try and get my thoughts in order BUT!

there is just.. something to be said with this season, and how they constantly like to reaffirm for us buck’s place in christopher’s life.

literally starting off the season with eddie opening up to buck about chris and him dating multiple girls at once, asking buck to talk to him (instead of simply asking him for advice to handle the situation, or even asking his girlfriend who- is a girl and would probably be better in that department! but anyway!).

and then showing us buck’s jealousy of chris thinking tommy is “so cool” (we all know now where that stemmed from, but i am still convinced he was confusing a bunch of feelings at once- and even oliver has said buck had no idea what / who he was jealous about!), and when tommy goes over to talk to buck about the basketball court incident- tommy tells him just how much christopher “can’t shut up” about him. and not to forget buck’s face when he says that and how it lasted a few seconds longer than it probably should have

…. and now; whatever the fuck is going on with helen and ramon coming to visit. my money is on abuela getting / feeling sick after the wedding (hence why eddie is still in the same shirt he wore to the hospital wedding in that still of him and chris that we got- also looks like he possibly could’ve been crying)

i am not super sure what the heck is going on there but i have a silly theory that my friend and i kind of came up with! we do not have strong evidence supporting it btw- this simply just based on what we have seen thus far and how the season has been playing out!

but since eddie will most likely be busy being by his abuela’s side- he would want someone to watch after chris for him. our best guess? buck, of course! it would also explain why he seems to be filming the same time as everyone else involved- and plus it could be the perfect opportunity to bring the ‘will of it all’ into play.

i could see two things going on with this; helena says something in a spur of a moment out burst along the lines of like, “you cannot keep leaving your son with a stranger” and eddie can say something like “he’s not a stranger, he’s family” and that can somehow lead into the will reveal! (because i do see helena being the problem here- people have pointed out many times now that ramon is the only one it seems to be putting in any effort into having a relationship with his son, where as it’s crickets from helena! also she was the first one to be defensive about shannon but anyway!)

OR!

and just a heads up: this is not me bashing tommy at all, i actually do enjoy his character and love what he has done / is doing for buck! this is simply speculation and also just a bit of fun!! no harm in silly theorizing!

i could see tommy perhaps noticing how often buck is watching after chris, and maybe he just brings up something about like, oh hey i thought eddie’s parents were in town… are they not able to watch after him? (in a nice way!! idk how the hell to word things but i do not think he would be a dick about it 😭 like he would just genuinely be asking!) and then somehow that conversation leads to the will and how eddie trusts buck more than anyone etc …

needless to say i just think there is. Something. There. and i have sooooo much hope in the will being brought up. based on how many times they brought it up in interviews, and sort of alluded to in the show as well (“you don’t seem to have trouble committing to certain things” you all know where your mind went!)

Okay…. I’ve been rewatching some old Buddie scenes because of the potential of Eddie moving back to El Paso and…. excuse my language but…. What the fuck?

It’s like the writers are new or don’t know what to do with Eddie anymore. Or like someway, somehow the episodes are out of order.

In THAT scene, Buck asks “he has grandparents, family” and Eddie reply’s “After Shannon left, they tried to guilt me into giving Christopher to them. It wasn’t what I wanted then, it’s not what I want now.” They then both agreed that no one would fight harder for Chris than Buck.

So WHY THE FUCK haven’t either of them gotten him back yet??

Eddie started season 7 with Marisol and Chris and everyone’s fine. Then Chris is dating multiple girls (Eddie is baffled and doesn’t know how to handle it so he asks Buck for help) and said it has to do with his mom to Buck and we get that EMOTIONAL shot of Eddie devastated after hearing this. Then proceeds to give him a letter to bring about closure for him. Eddie seemed to already have closure or at least repressed it.

Then Eddie meets Kim…. And the Eddie we have loved for 6 seasons is IMMEDIATELY GONE. He does the exact same thing that he told Buck about Christopher was not okay And needed to be fixed (he was BEGGING Buck for help).

Like, my dude, how did you think this was gonna go? You kept everyone in the dark. Your son, your best friend, your GIRLFRIEND and even Kim! What was his end goal? It doesn’t make any sense.

Like I understand that if Gavin wasn’t gonna be around next season, and you need to write him off but have him potentially come back, there were several ways you could have done that but still kept true to the characters. Have Chris go to a boarding school. Or a school trip. Or literally ANYTHING ELSE! Then season 8, keep the Kim storyline, but Chris is already gone and doesn’t witness it. Cause now that whole confession thing with Kim pretending to be Shannon and actually get closure was pointless. If they’d done that with Chris gone, he’d have the closure. Work on the PTSD crawling back up in an empty house, keep the Priest and finding Joy and then keep that for a bit and then heal.

That was a whole side tangent really for the main point I was trying to make, but why does Eddie- lose Chris, grow a mustache, grieve for not having his son, have an episode where a Priest says “let yourself have Joy,” then take it away in the next couple of episodes by saying “I’m thinking of moving to Texas” based on the words of a psycho actor??

Chris is a TEENAGER! Hell- he might still be a preteen, grow the fuck up and go parent your son. You’ve put your foot down before, why is this any different?? After a few weeks, I would have been like “nope, we’re done with this. I get I fucked up, but I’m still your dad so we are gonna talk about this and figure out some common ground.” I understand feeling guilty and not wanting to push him even farther away but you’re not even trying! Phone calls don’t show “I want you here with me,” it says “I’m okay with you being gone.”

You’re thinking moving to El Paso is a great idea… but it’s not. Your parents suck. You know this. YOU MOVED HALF WAY ACROSS THE US TO GET AWAY FROM THEM FOR A REASON! I get you patched things up slightly, but not enough.

ALSO! Why wasn’t Buck an option?!? Because of Tommy? I get because Gavin being out of the show(temporarily?) would have made that impossible but why wasn’t it even mentioned? I mean, He’s run to him before, he’s called him when Eddie had his breakdown and Chris didn’t know what to do. But like THEY HAD THE WILL, why wasn’t it even a factor in this. At the time, it felt like, at least to Chris, that Eddie was incapable of taking care of him, which means that Chris should go to Buck. Not his grandparents.

I just don’t understand what they are doing with these two. E and C. Bucks got his bisexual journey(relationship with Tommy). Bobby has multiple storylines. The Hans had the Mara and new baby storylines. Hen and Karen had the Ortiz/Mara and Denny/Halloween storylines. Athena has literally any storyline involving cops. And all those storylines make sense for each character. Eddie’s and Chris’s doesn’t. They keep pushing Eddie to be sad then happy then making stupid decisions. DEVELOP YOUR FUCKING CHARACTER! You’ve been dropping the ball since at least the network switch. Which I find super funny because yes, he does the emotional scenes super amazing but now it seems like his character is more open. He’s making more funny faces, he’s got the loose hair, he makes comedic jokes. But he’s almost(so close) to reminding me of Buck 1.0.. but it doesn’t fit with the storyline at all. At least to me…

Like does anyone agree with any of this? Am I just seeing things? Did the writers get told Gavin was leaving too late and made this story on the fly and rolled with it? Does Ryan want out of the show and they are keeping it under wraps? Like WHAT IS HAPPENING? Make it make sense!

The way that scene goes such a long way to setting up everything. It is genuinely such an important scene that shouldn't have been cut out. It explains why Eddie just wanted to talk to Kim and let her just talk like Shannon did more than actually date her and have a lake/boat date (He literally was recreating the first time he and Shannon met) and with Chris choosing to go to his grandparents' house that means he's gone to the lake that his parents met at, which he knew of because of that scene. He went to the place his parents met after seeing someone who looked just like his mother.

That scene also gave so many more Buck and Shannon parallels. There's something about Eddie loving his best friend who is a yapper that he just wants to spend time listening to

okay the birthday scene utterly destroyed me because WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS THAT HORRENDOUSNESS??

this is gonna be long and heated so i'm sticking it under a cut…

i've only watched the ep once, so could be forgetting things, and therefore might be back to say more once i've watched it again!

helena (and ramón by proxy) perpetuating the emotional child abuse by flipping the parentification of eddie sideways and morphing it into ‘you're not here for me (helena) anymore so i'm punishing you in the same (perceived) way you punished me by literally and now also emotionally taking your child away from you’ is so fucked up and vile that i can't even think straight.

chris is angry with his dad, which—fair. BUT! would he really still be in the exact same emotionally fragile place AFTER THREE FUCKING MONTHS if his abuelos were doing what they should be doing by speaking to him about it and trying their damnedest to help out eddie—THEIR FUCKING SON—on his path to reconciling with his son? I THINK FUCKING NOT. instead of being a magnanimous go-between, as they should be, they (she) are clearly actively encouraging a young teen to shun his doting father (who, granted, fucked-up royally, but in his defence was kind of losing his mind at the time and did nothing to directly nor intentionally hurt his child), shun his best friend (and let's be real: other parent), shun his whole life in LA (his other abuela and his tia/his peers/school life/carla etc), shun the loving home EDDIE has made for him, while selfishly manipulating him by giving him ‘everything’ a kid could want to entice him to stay there (omg the fucking “he loves the water!”—do they even understand what it took for eddie and buck to help chris get over his fear of water after the tsunami? do they even know?!), in texas, the very place eddie wanted to remove his son from, thus enabling him to live it up as only a spoilt rotten grandchild can, with them (her), so that they (she) can get a second chance at feeling like Good Parents, because they know they got it wrong with (at least) eddie. helena, in her very messed-up head, has never forgiven her son for leaving her for shannon, and has spent years punishing eddie for that, yet hasn't really ever felt the satisfaction she craves—until now.

because now, finally, helena has what she has wanted for so long, and so the emotional abuse continues, just in a different form.

and poor, poor, loving eddie, knowing that he badly screwed up, tried to show his kid that he understood he made a mistake, and that he sees his pain, and decided to give chris the space he needed—and by doing so gave his mother the one thing he never wanted to allow to happen, the thing she has always wanted ever since he ‘left’ her: helena's revenge.

eddie decorating his living room with a banner with christopher's name and buying party hats and balloons etc (which, sure, is now too childish a thing for chris to enjoy, but goddammit eddie is trying), having chris's buck there for him, and inviting tommy over (and who knows how he actually felt about that) because he knows chris thinks he's a cool guy, was eddie trying so, so hard to let his boy know just how much he is wanted and loved and missed.

chris is (just!) fourteen, though, and unless all of this effort is pointed out to him, of course he wouldn't care and would be sullen and unappreciative—that's teenagers for you! and of course his grandparents (helena) absolutely did not prime him for the zoom chat with his dad (ON HIS FUCKING BIRTHDAY), as they should've; of course they (she) let him take the reins with this and be dismissive of his father's attempts at healing his relationship with his boy; of course, of course, of course. ramón obviously goes along with whatever the fuck helena wants because of the guilt he has over not being there for her or his kids when they were growing up, giving helena permission to revel in her ‘justified’ reprisal.

i think that if eddie didn't understand that he needs to hold it together, now more than ever—he has to be okay, to be in a place where he can get his son back—he'd be smashing up the entire state of california, never mind just his bedroom. thankfully—LIKE, THANK FUCKING FUCK—he has has his real family, the 118, and his partner in life, buck, and his new moustache lol, to keep him going. honestly though, the guy deserves more than a silver star for his herculean efforts with this shit-show.

christopher will forgive eddie, because shannon and eddie raised a bright and empathetic human being who will eventually see that his dad never in a million years meant to hurt him. and eddie will forgive his parents, whether they deserve it or not, because he is historically a selfless and kind human being who absolutely would not want to teach his son resentment.

but istfg there better be some sort of resolution (if only one sided, although i'd love helena and ramón—more helena, as we've already had a scene of ramón expressing his regrets and being almost tender with his son—show a little humility and see them make room for recognising and taking responsibility for their mistakes) for eddie diaz and the continuous psychological torment inflicted on him by his parents (helena). OR ELSE!

Secret Santa Fic Part 2

The laptop was open on the kitchen table, Safari drowning in a sea of tabs for homes in El Paso and the blank application for the EPFD. Eddie minimized the browser and opened up FaceTime, swiping at his hair and reflexively passing his finger over his upper lip even though the mustache was gone.

He clicked on Chris’ name and waited. It had been a few weeks since they had talked like this, face to face if even through a screen and he couldn’t help squeezing his thighs under the table from nerves. 

When the call connected and Chris’ face appeared on the screen, Eddie let out the breath he’d been holding.

“Hey buddy, good to see your face.”

Chris squinted at him and tilted his head. “Did you finally shave that cry for help off your face?”

And god his kid had become savage. He remembered when Chris was a literal ray of sunshine, when the teasing was good natured and silly. He wasn’t sure if this new edge was due to the events of the past year, Chris becoming a teenager and realizing that his parents were people too, or if it had always been there and he just stopped censoring himself. 

Eddie chuckled weakly and smoothed over his top lip again. “Yeah, a few weeks ago actually.” 

“Hmm. Did you do it because Buck broke up with Tommy?” Chris asked, a sly look on his face.

And what the hell was Eddie supposed to do with that? 

“NO, it had nothing to do with Buck. How do you even know about that?” Eddie spluttered.

“Buck kept sending me pictures of baked goods so I asked him what was going on and he told me.”

“Oh, that’s good. That you’re talking.  That’s partly why I wanted to talk to you.”

“Yeah, what’s with all the secrecy? Secrets don’t make friends.”

Eddie sighed. “We did the Secret Santa drawing at the station today and I drew Buck’s name this year.”

“So you need my help to get him a present?”

“Well, yes. He usually helps me pick out gifts because I suck at presents.”

Chris cocked his head. “So last year when I got a retro game handheld and the adaptive surfboard….”

Eddie nodded. “All Buck.”

“God, dad, when are you going to wife him up, already?” Chris groaned. 

And Eddie froze. Because what the fuck? Why would Chris think that was even a possibility? Yes, Buck had just gotten out of a relationship with a man, but that doesn’t mean that he likes all men, that he would like Eddie that way. Surely, Buck would have said something before this if he was interested.

And Eddie, well, he’d always dated women. Usually nice Latina women that his family would approve of and that he didn’t really think about when they weren’t right in front of him. And Shannon. He’d loved Shannon. She was his best friend, mother of his child, of course he’d loved her.

Eddie knew he’d been silent too long, but he cleared his throat and said as neutrally as possible, “Where is this coming from?” 

“7 years of watching you two dance around each other. Plus you like Buck way more than you ever liked the women you dated.” 

“That’s different, he’s my best friend,” Eddie defended himself.

“Well Denny’s my best friend you don’t see me hating all his girlfriends and spiraling when we can’t talk everyday.” Chris retorted. 

“It’s not like that.”

Chris shrugged, “When I was little, I thought you were dating and just didn’t tell me because you’re all repressed and shit. But then you kept bringing women around and I figured out you just suck at knowing your own feelings. And then Buck started dating Tommy and you went off the deep end, so I thought you finally figured it out. Are you telling me you’re still pretending that you’re straight?”

Eddie flushed a deep red, “Look, we can talk more about this later” (like when hell freezes over, Eddie thought)  “I just need this Christmas to be special for Buck since it’s the last one we’ll get to spend together.”

Eyes narrowed suspiciously, Chris said “I thought you said Buck was fine?” His mouth dropped open in shock. “Is he dying? Why wouldn’t you tell me that? I’ll start looking up flights…”

“Whoa, whoa,” Eddie interrupted. “He’s not dying I swear.” He dragged his hand down his face, wondering how he was capable of screwing this up so badly. 

“I was trying to keep it a surprise, but uh, I’m moving,” Eddie continued. 

“What,” Chris screeched. “Where the hell are you moving to?”

“El Paso,” Eddie said and made jazz hands, like the incredible dork that he was. “Surprise!?”

Chris groaned and flopped forward to bang his head on his desk dramatically. 

After a minute he sat back up and glared at Eddie. “No, Dad, you are not moving to El Paso. You are going to figure your shit out, ask Buck on a date, and I’m coming home to make sure you don’t screw this up.”

Eddie sat stunned at Chris’ words and he latched onto the last part. “You want to come home?”

“Well it’s clear you can’t be left without supervision. Does Buck know you’re moving?”

“Yeah. He’s been helping me look for houses.” Eddie responded.

Under his breath Eddie could faintly make out Chris saying “Self-sacrificing idiots, the both of them.” 

Then louder “Okay, we need a plan to romance the shit out of Buck, so I’m going to need you to take notes.”

Eddie nodded and grabbed the notepad he’d set next to the laptop on the table. As Chris talked, he diligently scribbled down instructions, a grin barely suppressed as he listened to his son. 

His son was coming home.
