‘LOVEHOLIC’ by NCT 127 (2021) review

overall a pretty ok album. not amazing or their best but theres some nice songs in there. 

gimme gimme: as frequent readers of my blog will know, i am an avid listener of 127s noisier songs, and among my favorites are punch and chain, arguably some of their most controversial releases to date. this one is not quite as out there, but we still got some pretty solid noise, as expected by producer moonshine (who also produced dreams ‘ridin’ and ‘deja vu’ and wayvs ‘turn back time’ among others). and seeing as kenzie is also involved with the production there of course is some great vocals and harmonies. another thing i love about nct songs, and sm in general, are the harmonies bc surprisingly not that many kpop artists actually go ham on those in the same way :/

lipstick: another fun noise song. here again i am mostly blown away by the fun harmonies... incredible and beautiful. probably my favourite song on the album

first love: very cute and fun song. also since it was prereleased ive been singing along to the lyrics and theyre so cute... anyways i love when 127 make cute songs and its a nice contrast to the other songs on the album

chika bom bom: actually i decided to write this post just so i could rant about how much i hate this song. its just so bad i wish i never heard it. i want to wipe it from my memory. definitely a new low for nct as a whole, but especially for 127 bc i usually never dislike anything they put out. i am disappointed and angry. dont talk to me about this. hisssssss hisssssssss

right now: i would absolutely love this if it wasnt for something about the vocals that sounds weird to me. im not a music expert but theres just something wrong with the mixing/production that makes it sound weird to me. that being said i really like the contrasting “i wanna be your somebody” section, and the way it stands out against the rest of the song. i am also obsessed with the bass line in the second verse, love it when they change up the instrumentals like this :-)

overall i give this album a 7/10. i refuse to acknowledge that song as a part of the album so this rating is based on the other 4 songs  :-)

Personally, I’m intrigued from a meta-view of “oh so that’s definitely pulling from online world and fanfiction world, interesting. I wonder how much fanfiction culture is starting to influence print book culture and promotion.” Maybe I’ve got some questions like, “Ok so moneymaking companies such as Penguin are now using culture developed by the not-moneymaking-world of fanfiction? How do we feel about this?” Anyway, the book looks cute, I’m interested enough and I might get it from the library.

I suspect many people’s reactions are along the lines of “hm, interesting”, “sounds like a lark”, or “haha they’re using AO3 tags as promo”, etc.

So that’s a lot of info and reactions.

Personally: at first glance, I absently skimmed the tweet and “hurt/comfort” popped out, and I was like “What? Mainstream publishing is cool with this now? I was wondering if ‘hurt/comfort’ would one day become commonly used in publishing [related post]. But this is way sooner than I thought.” And then I read the rest of of the tweet and thought, “Wait, what?” 

And then I started reading through the tweet replies and thought, “OK, at the risk of getting a bunch of Tumblr drama, I want to bring this to the whump community and see how people feel."

As for myself, one of my squicks is non-con, and I’m not really interested in hurt/no comfort. So just from the tweet, I know the book is not for me. The official blurbs confirmed that. In this sense, this is like skimming Ao3 tags on a fic and saying “pass” on a story.

However, I have questions about the specific promotion of the book. So the official blurbs are pretty standard. What about that tweet, which Tor (and the author, who helped put it together) put out? Because I think an official publisher’s Tweet comes with different context than Ao3 tags.

First, the different internet spaces. You can filter tags on Ao3 and Tumblr. I know you can mute words on Twitter, but is that the same thing? Also, would people be expecting these tags on Twitter? Compared to Ao3 or Tumblr or Tumblr Whump spaces?

Within the Tumblr Whump community, from what I’ve browsed, the community attitude (guidelines?) seem to be “Write and discuss what you want. Be sure to tag it, use content warnings, or otherwise clearly communicate if you have things that may be triggering. Respect people’s squicks/triggers. Walk away from what you don’t like.” Like, tumblr whump has a very specific culture of trying to balance discourse/stories about potentially very dark stuff, but also wanting to make sure the IRL people and Tumblr users are okay. There’s always posts going around about how to do this, are we doing this in the right way, ethics, so on. Also -- and people can correct me -- the whump tumblr space might be where tags are content warnings for people to stay away, and also what people might actively look for. So if any space is going to discuss if this promotional tweet checks out, I feel like it’s this space. 

Also, to note again, Tor Tweets are in the money-official-publisher-world, not unpaid-tumblr-people or unpaid-fanfiction-fandom-world.

Maybe I just want to ask, “Hey those first two tweet responses, does they have a point? Tor using ‘noncon’ as official promotion? On Twitter?” I mean, I’ve previously written, “The CW and TW tags that Ao3 writers use, I really wish those were used with published books as well.” But somehow, the Tor tweet was not quite what I was expecting. Maybe for reasons similar to that first tweet response. (I guess one could debate if a tweet is really promotion or just information... you know what someone can correct me, but I’m gonna say that a Tor.com tweet is promotion, compared to information like Ao3, and that tweet was there for promotion.)

Those tags operate within specific Ao3 and Tumblr cultures and infrastructure. I don’t hang around Twitter for whump stuff, IDK what the culture is. Anyway, does dropping these tags into a promotional tweet from Tor.... translate?

The tweet is evidently gathering the people who are there for it, and the people who aren’t there for it are quickly realizing that they are not there for it. But personally, the Tor website blurb does a better job at that, using writing that I’d expect from a publisher for communicating fictional non-con situations. (Maybe the blurb content warnings are what I wanted more of, when I said I wished for CW and TW in books.)

Anyway, there’s no huge drama about that Docile book promo on Twitter, as far as I can tell. So this is a niche thing, right now. But. The promo for Bonds of Brass and for Docile might be the beginnings of a trend of well-known book publishers borrowing from online writing / fandom culture and terminology in order to promote or categorize their books. These two promos might set a precedent or have other significance.

So if anyone has discourse on the tweets or potential future trends...

Between this year being an election year, the start of my Masters program, and being a mom-to-be, I'm exhausted. I never thought I would live to see our country go through so much turmoil... but yet I digress. Between African Americans having to fear for their existence, white supremecy making its way out of the shadows now more than ever, and the potential for women, african americans and those part of the LGBTQIA+ community losing their rights, I am genuinely scared. We need a leader who is ready to condemn white supremecy and one who is for the American people no matter what your color, race, sexual orientation or gender identity. A REAL LEADER. I do not like to really discuss politics, so I will leave it at that. Lately with my Masters program, I feel as though I just do not want to do it anymore... AND I JUST STARTED! I think it is because I was an avid planner user, bujo user, and I kind of just let all of it slide. I don't feel as productive as I used to be. Guess I need to get back into using my planners. It helped me stay on track and really feel like I was accompishing things. NOW, becoming a mom, is terrifying me. Honestly, Im just worried about being a good mom. I think I was more concerned too with the genetic testing we had done. We had no reason to be worried, but we were still worried. You just never know with pregnancy. So many factors go into a fetus developing and one wrong thing can affect a huge process. Thank you to my genetics and developmental biology professor for teaching me all of the things I now know about the developmental process. But I am happy to say, there are no genetic issues we have to worry about, and soon we will get to know what the gender of our fetus is. :D It feels good to get back into blogging. I need a creative outlet to kind of express myself that isn't instagram or facebook. So hello Tumblr, I am Aylesia, and this is my life. xoxo

below the cut is a lot of some stuff about him but !!! there are plots at the end so pls bear with me~

bio stuff:

okay so,, hyunbin did not exist in the first timeline. he spent time just fluttering around the human world, hoping around, landing a few places before he stuck in busan as hyunbin.

when he was released he was just thrown out onto the street in the middle of the day, had no idea what was going on, and was p much really confused. 

it was rainy and he was wet and he didn’t have anywhere ago so he just kinda wondered the streets helplessly for awhile. 

he was lonely and cold and angry bc he didn’t know what to do and no humans were really doing anything to help him, just staring and watching so he didn’t like humans at all at first. 

but then this little old lady came up to him one day ( about a month after his release ) and offered him some food so he had a little more faith in the human race. 

she kept coming back to bring him things/take care of him and eventually offered him a place to stay. in exchange for his help in her tailor shop, she’d pay him and give him a place to stay.

so hyunbin’s been there with her ever since - living in the house above the shop with her and the twins, her grandchildren ( he loves them a lot okay ).

he’s just trying to fit in with all the YouthTM these days - following trends, obsessing over bands, trying to blend in and forget that first month in the human world ever happened.

tldr:

as a card, before the whole getting sealed thing, he was actually really scary but now he’s just a giant baby.

one of the nicest people you’ll meet tho.

he tailors clothing at a shop, it’s a p well known local business so the job isn’t too boring.

actually would like to make some clothes of his own.

he keeps up will all the fashion trends bc of this,, and also just bc he’s more of a follower rather than a setter. 

also an avid social media user. mostly to keep up with m.ea and love note.

runs an m.ea tumblr blog, v dedicated ( tho he keeps this on the dl so he goes by david online )

gets sick easily so he’s kinda always Super clean and tidy.

his neck hurts a lot bc the twins are rowdy sleepers and insist on sleeping with him.

but they’re practically his children don’t mess with them.

he’s power is empathy! he can feel what others feel but only with psychical contact - can also influence other’s emotions with his own the same way but this takes a lot more work. doesn’t use his powers often.kinda wants to be a human so getting captured would complicate that now wouldn’t it?

“i needed a drink of water after my shower but i forgot that i opened the blinds to my balcony and you just saw me walk into my kitchen naked.”

“this horrible umbrella won’t extend! oh shit i just hit you in the stomach/crotch! i’m so sorry.”

“i don’t know my headphones aren’t plugged in all the way so now you know i’m listening to educational children’s cartoon theme songs.”

hyunbin finds you sitting alone on a bench and he’s feeling Extra generous today so he approaches you with intentions of using a little bit of magic to make you feel better.

!!! a frequent at the shop. bonus: he thinks you’re cute so you get discounts.

hyunbin takes the twins out for some ice cream and he leaves them for one minute only to come back to find them both in tears, wearing their ice creams, and a rather guilty looking you.

you catch hyunbin leaving a shop redhanded with two bags of m.ea merch and proceed to lecture him on how this was not the way to live his life.
