Wiki How To: Text Tempt Him (HC)

Pairing: All x fem!Reader (minus Solomon, Luke)

Prompt: MC comes across an interesting article and uses it against her boyfriend.

A/N: I was researching topics for HCs and came across an article that I had to use against the Nightbringer characters since they're a little more innocent compared to the OM characters. 😂 The ideas for the texts come directly from this article.

Prologue:

You were browsing the internet trying to find a step-by-step recipe on how to make a cake, but on your browsing journey, you came across an eyebrow-raising article.

How to Make a Guy Horn.y Over Text.

As you read through the article, your lips curled into a devious smile. What a perfect chance to tease your new boyfriend. You quickly opened his messages and texted him.

"Oh, Lucifer. You. Me. 🍆👌 Now."

When he received your text, he was in a meeting with Diavolo, Barbatos, and his brothers. For a good minute, he started at your cryptic text.

Eggplant? Okay? Were you planning to cook for him and wanted to know if he liked eggplants? If so, why would you add in you, me, and now?

"Long...hole...," he mumbled under his breath. Ding. Ding. Ding. His eyes widened, and he slammed his phone, facing down, on the wooden table. The room went dead silent, and all eyes moved to him.

Lucifer cleared his throat and apologized but failed to hide his red cheeks. Why would you send him such a text, especially during the daytime?

He had a hard time concentrating on the meeting and a harder time not imagining getting intimate with you.

“Know what I’m imagining right now? Me riding you…🤠"

Mammon was bored out of his mind listening to Barbatos lecturing some of his younger brothers. So when he saw your name on his lock screen, he smiled and opened your message. He almost let out a laugh but pressed his fingers to his lips.

"Did ya mean you and me goin' on a ride? You can't ride me...I'm not a car or bike. 🤣"

You giggled at his innocent reply. "You don't need to be a car or bike for me to ride you. If we are connected somewhere, I can ride you. 😜 Look up woman riding man if you don't believe me."

Mammon raised an eyebrow and did exactly what you recommended, not taking his surrounding into consideration. He yelped and quickly turned off his phone screen.

"Mammon...is there something you would like to add in? Rather, is there anything amusing on your phone that you would like to show us?" Barbatos was not pleased to be interrupted, but Mammon swiftly shook his head and held onto his phone tighter.

He felt tortured. The explicit pictures turned him on, and Mammon couldn't stop imagining you riding him. The bulge in his pants was growing bigger, but it didn't look like Barbatos would stop lecturing them anytime soon.

Couldn't you have waited until nighttime to send him that message?

“Hi Levi~. Last night was incredible. You’re so good with your hands, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it…😳”

He smiled at your text and nodded while typing, "I play games a lot, so I am good with my hands."

"Are you now? Wanna show me just how good you are? 😏"

You weren't talking about him playing video games, were you? Rather than reply to your message, Levi wondered what you were trying to say.

He decided to look up the meaning and nearly screamed. With a steaming red face, he grabbed his phone and messaged you, "I DIDN'T MEAN IT THAT WAY! I MEAN'T I AM GOOD WITH GAMES."

"I am sure you are good with OTHER things too."

"N-No. I AM NOT!"

"Guess we will have to find out."

"W-Wait...what does that mean? (Y/n)? What does that mean?"

"I am coming over, and you're going to answer my question. Actually, no. You are going to show me.😘"

Levi was at a loss. Were you and him...really going to...? But he doesn't know anything about it!

When you opened the door to his room, Levi was passed out on the floor with a nosebleed. He took your joke too seriously.

"Hey Satan. Wanna come over? You✌️👅. I 🍆👅."

Satan saw your cryptic message and got excited. Solving puzzles was one of his favorite passtimes, but if this was a puzzle why were you asking him to come over?

The tongue emoji meant you are hungry...so you wanted him to cook something for you? Maybe something with an eggplant? Then you wanted to lick his fingers after he cooked for you? Weird.

"(Y/n). Meet me in the kitchen. I will make a meal with an eggplant, but I don't prefer you lick my fingers after I am done."

You couldn't stop laughing. Cook and lick his fingers? "Satan, are you sure that's what I meant? Try again.😏 Since I feel generous, I will give you a hint - find a human anatomy book and compare them to the emojis."

Satan raised an eyebrow at the anatomy book part and concluded that it would be much easier to come to talk to you in person.

Right as he was about to knock on your door, Satan's jaw dropped. It finally clicked. You were not talking about eggplants or cooking.

Before he could run away, you opened the door and pulled him inside with the help of his boa.

"You can't run from me now, Satan..." were the last words he heard before being swallowed by the darkness in your room.

“Asmo! I had the HOTTEST dream about you last night. It’s all I can think about now. 🥵”

Asmo blushed when he saw your message but was surprised you were leading him on. Did you forget he was the Avatar of Lust? Sending him these kinds of messages was "dangerous".

"What a coincidence! I had a dream about us last night too. We were in my room, our bodies were sparkling with perspiration, our breathing was ragged, sweet moans escaped our lips, and we were so close, I could feel the heat on your skin radiation onto mine."

Your jaw hit the floor. You were only teasing him, but he actually had dreams about the two of you getting intimate?

The thought of you and Asmo in an embrace as he filled you and moaned your name in your ears made you feel hot and bothered...until you saw his next message.

"I was teaching you how to do yoga, and you were struggling. 🤭"

“Beel, I am hungry for your🍆. Come to my room.💋”

Beel's eyes widened, and he ran out of his room and straight out the front door of the House of Lamentation.

Half an hour later, you heard someone repeatedly hitting the tip of their shoe on your bedroom door. When you opened the door, you found Beel carrying a load of eggplants in his arms.

"Beel? What is this?"

"Eggplants...that's what they are called, right?" He smiled proudly, "You must be really hungry...I am sorry for taking so long..."

"You sighed and let out a laugh. "That's not what I was...you know what... never mind. Want to help me cook some eggplant dishes?"

Beel grinned and nodded. His innocence was endearing, but maybe you could teach him later tonight what you meant in your text message.

“Belphie...I’ve got a ton of blankets and it’s still freezing. Should I put clothes on too?"

Belphie sleepily stared at his phone screen. What kind of a message was this? Was he just too sleepy to make sense of it?

"Maybe you are cold because you are not wearing clothes? Considered that?"

He shook his head, set his phone aside, and closed his eyes. Wait. Belphie's eyes snapped open - why were you telling him you weren't wearing any clothes? That's not something a woman readily shares with a man, right?

He rolled onto his stomach and buried his face in his pillow. Now, he can't stop imagining what you look like without clothes. Maybe he should visit you and find out.

“I have a confession: I want you. Like, right now.”

Diavolo smiled at your text and innocently replied, "I want you too."

You were taken aback by his bold reply. Did he actually mean what he said or...does he mean something else?

"So, Diav. You want me to come over, or are you going to come over?"

"Come over. Barbatos is watching me, and I can't sneak out of the castle."

Barbatos? He couldn't be serious, right? "Wait, you want to do it with Barbatos watching? 😲"

"Why does it matter if Barbatos is around? Do you not like him?"

You didn't know whether to laugh or get upset. "You have no idea what I am talking about, do you?"

When the conversation abruptly ended, Diavolo tried to call you but panicked when you didn't pick up. He could ask Barbatos for help, but the butler would get upset if he found out the prince was messing around instead of working.

So, Diavolo did the next best thing - he sulked all day, thinking he messed up and you were mad at him.

“Hello Barbatos. If you were in a room with me, some whipped cream, and nothing else, what would you do?”

The butler nearly dropped his knife at your boldness. What were you hoping to accomplish by asking him this question?

"I would take the whipped cream to the kitchen as it is a delicate product and will spoil if not refrigerated."

That's not what you were expecting. What a boring response.

"Oh..."

Barbatos chuckled at your reply. The joke was on you. He knew exactly what you meant, but two can play the teasing game.

He set his phone on the kitchen counter and stared at the whipped cream in front of him. If he was in a room with you and whipped cream, he would undress you, make a dessert out of you, and savor each bite of the dessert.

"Simeon, if we were alone in a room right now, and I give you permission to touch me anywhere I want, where would you touch me? 🫦"

The angel smiled at your message but his eyebrows furrowed at the lips. Why were you sending him a biting lip emoji? Brushing it aside, he took his time typing the reply.

"I would"

"touch"

"your"

Excited for the last word, you gripped your phone harder, crossed your legs tighter, and held onto your breath.

"Hair"

The excitement drained out of your body all at once, and you felt like a deflated balloon. Then again, what else were you expecting from a resident of the Celestial Realm?

"Oh...okay."

Your response bothered Simeon, but why did it feel like the temperature in the room increased suddenly? The more he stared at the lip emoji, the more he realized your question might not be as innocent as he made it out to be. Were you perhaps trying to tempt an angel?

I'm currently at a point where because I've got into Gallifrey, I follow or have at least browsed people's blogs who love other dweu stuff. And I thought it might be fun to say what I currently think and know about eu characters/companions so when I have in the future delved deeper into the eu I can look back and compare and laugh and see how much is accurate! There's gonna be a "read more" here because this gonna get Long.

Also please let me know what I've got right and not and also tell me more about these characters if you are fans of them!

Benny: starting off strong i know some stuff about her! she's an archeologist from the future (wonder if she ever met River) and she travelled with... one of the doctor(s)? Possibly Seven? She is besties with Brax and sometimes works for him and his collection. Probably must be able to put up with bullshit because of those last two points. Has a husband called Jason and at least one kid, which, iconic, female adventure and action protagonists should get to be mums more often its always the childfree so big up Benny for that. made a cameo at the end of Gallifrey IV.

Evelyn: I have heard her. A little. I basically skipped through the apocalypse element because I wanted to understand some of the reasons that Romana is the way she is in Gallifrey, but didn't listen properly because I got bored. Is an old lady, which is great - its great to see ages mixing it up a bit, instead of the 19-25 year old girl primary companions we consistently get in nu-who. Travelled with Six and is/was a professor at a university. Not sure for which subject though.

Fitz: Canonically bisexual and wears a leather jacket. I've seen A Lot of shipping him and Eight, and these shippers seem to have a similar vibe to Two/Jamie shippers. I don't know much else, except that his time with the doctor is probably fucked up because from what I have gleaned, Eight's companions Go Through It like big time.

Compassion: Faction Paradox which I believe is in an alternate universe (also the faction paradox timelines seem to have have a different vibe of names to the main universe ones, every time I'm on the "Individual Time Lords" category on the wiki and see a name that seems out of place it turns out to be a character from Faction Paradox.) Is a person (human i think?) but is also a TARDIS? Like you can go into her and travel? Where tf is the door this is very cursed. Also used as a breeding machine to make more TARDISes as well? By Romana? Idk but this seems pretty fucked up in an icky way. And fucked up in a non-icky way too. I'm just confused tbh. Not sure which doctor is involved in this one.

C'rizz - Possibly people can't say his name right? Is that him? Alien boy, travelled with Eight and Charley. That's about all I know.

Chris Cwej: I know even less about him, hes the other possibility for people mixing up his name or something. Think he travelled with Seven. Idk why but he gives me dick vibes.

Hex Schofield: Travelled with Ace and Seven. Is from 2021 or something and says "sus." Which yh that was a thing but he was made before among us existed that's a cool coincidence that it turned out like that.

Liv and Helen: They exist. That's it I know nothing more.

Molly O'Sullivan: Also exists. Travelled with eight?

Charley Pollard: Has a Nazi for a sister - Blind Eye my beloved. Calls herself Edwardian even though she's from the 1930s, idk if its like a character point or an accidental fuck up by the writers. Has a romance with the doctor in some form. And also a pretty messed up relationship with him i think. Actually just a pretty messed up time. Especially because I think she was in Scherzo which I hear Wild Blue Yonder was inspired by. So good luck girl you're gonna need it.

audio study methods

Still working on that 'lazy' study plan post, since I am just not satisfied with any chinese grammar guide summaries online enough to recommend them as a small grammar intro. If anyone knows of any good 'grammar overview summary' articles or sites for chinese grammar, please let me know. (I like AllSetLearning's Chinese Grammar Wiki but it is huge and in depth and not something I'd recommend a learner 'just read through' on month 4 of learning, and the grammar guide summary site I used as a beginner that was very easy to read through in a few hours... no longer exists)

So in the meantime. Not a grammar study tip, but a general 'lazy' option for language learners who (like me) can't focus on stuff like anki, or just don't want to. I go more in depth about using audio lessons and audio flashcards on other posts, and on the lazy study plan post i'm drafting, but the short of it is: you can listen and learn while doing your normal daily activities. That's what makes the study method so convenient. You don't have to squeeze in any extra time, or change your daily life schedule to make time for chinese, to use audio lessons and audio flashcards.

You simply find some times during the day when you'd either normally listen to audio in the background (like if you listen to music when commuting or shopping, or if you listen to podcasts when working, or if you listen to youtube while exercising or browsing social media). As usual, the more time the better as you'll make faster progress if you study 1-2 hours a day or more. But anything is better than nothing. So lets say you commute to work 30 minutes in morning and evening, there's your hour of studying audio. Or you go for a walk at lunch for 15 minutes, and browse tumblr for an hour scrolling (that's 1 hour and 15 minutes of study). It's very easy to fit 30 minutes of audio study into a day, and it's fairly easy to fit even 2-4 hours of audio study if you're so inclined. I usually do 30 minutes - 2 hours of audio study some days, since when I walk I decide if I feel like listening to a youtube essay or chinese or japanese stuff, when driving I decide which I feel like listening to, and I want to listen to something in english 2/3 of the time.

How do you use audio study material? Well, the easy way is you just press play on it, let it play in the background while you do other stuff, and that's it. If you tend to avoid studying new stuff (like me), then I recommend PRIORITIZING listening to NEW AUDIO every time, until you get into the habit of listening to NEW stuff to learn. Then you can re-listen to stuff sometimes, as review, especially when you're doing activities you have less attention on audio during. So for example: you'd listen to new audio on the commute or when walking (when you can mostly focus on what you're hearing), and then re-listen to audio as review while working or scrolling tumblr and reading english (activities where you pay more attention to other things besides audio).

What can you listen to?

There's audio lessons - which would be something like ChinesePod101 (Immersive Language Chinese in the Hoopla library app), Coffee Break Chinese, youtube videos where teachers talk in english and explain chinese as they teach it. These are good for study material, because you comprehend what you're learning due to the english explanations of every word and grammar point you hear. These are good for beginners, because you will understand everything you're listening to, and learn new words and grammar, thanks to the explanations. The drawback with audio lessons is they require the most focus.

There's learner podcasts like TeaTime Chinese and Slow Chinese, these are more often ENTIRELY in chinese. So these are better for practicing comprehension of stuff you've studied elsewhere, rather than for learning new things. You can learn new words and grammar from these, but if that is your goal then re-listen to learner podcasts a decent amount (5-20 times or more until you can't guess/figure out any more word meanings).

There's audio flashcards (which I love). These are sentence audio in english, then repeated in chinese. The order may vary, the chinese may be repeated more than once. These are good for beginners and upward, because you get a translation of every single thing you hear in chinese. You can pick up new words and grammar from audio flashcards. Audio flashcards require less focus than audio lessons, because you can learn from sentences while you pay attention and then if your attention drifts you can just focus again to the next sentence you hear and continue learning. The drawback is there are no explanations for which word specifically translates to what, some translations are not literal, and there's no explanation of why the grammar is the way it is. Audio flashcards require the listener to try and guess what means what by exposure to chinese sentences and their translations. So it's harder than audio lessons in terms of explanations, but easier than learner podcasts. Audio flashcards are the best substitute for traditional flashcards or SRS apps like anki, if you're trying to improve your vocabulary by hundreds of words ASAP. Audio flashcards are dense with new vocabulary (usually 1 new word or grammar point per sentence you can learn), so you'll learn more words than you would with an audio lesson that is paced slower with more english explanations or a learner podcast which would ideally be mostly words you know and only 20% or less new words.

There's Spoonfed Chinese Anki audio files (which I recommend since these start out very basic and increase in difficulty while also repeating words a lot so you can review, they're shared on reddit if you search, or ask me), if you search 'chinese english sentences' on youtube or bilibili (i've done this with chinese japanese sentences on bilibili) you'll find videos like this where you hear audio english then audio chinese. Old glossika cd files are basically this structure as well, which you can find the audio files of for free online or free in libraries (I'm using the new glossika app for japanese but I'm hesitant to recommend the modern app courses as there's significant errors in japanese so I'm not sure how good/bad the chinese one is). If you're a beginner, then the audio flashcard material you pick won't matter much as you need to learn a few thousand common words first which will be in most materials you find. But if you're an upper beginner, you may wish to prioritize finding audio flashcards with MORE unique words, more sentences, or may want to transition to using learner podcasts more for new vocabulary. If you aren't running into at least one new word for every 5 sentences you hear in audio flashcards (and ideally one new word for Every sentence), then that audio flashcard is way too easy for you and you know enough words to move onto new study material.

Audiobooks and audio dramas - use these like learner podcasts, listen to ones you can comprehend the main idea of, and then re-listen until you can't guess/figure out any more new words. If you're not very good at listening comprehension (like me lol), then you may want to listen to a given audiobook/audio drama file 3-5 times before deciding if you can comprehend the main idea (and use the material). When my listening skills are rusty, or just in general since my listening skills are bad, it can take me a few times of listening to recognize words I 'already know' and then a few more times of listening for my brain to put the words i recognize together into 'comprehending' what was communicated. So if you can read better than you can listen, you may want to listen 3-5+ times to a new audio file before deciding if you can follow the main idea or if it's too hard. And if you can READ the audio drama transcript, chapter text, but cannot understand the audio file? Then it probably IS at a good level for you to listen to, you just need a lot more practice hearing and recognizing the words you can read. So re-listen.

All of these listening study methods are good for:

Adding more study time into your day, since you can do them while doing other things.

Learning new words and grammar, when you don't have the time (or don't want) to spend time dedicated mainly to focusing on your study material.

Learning new words and grammar, if you don't use flashcards or SRS like anki but want the benefit of learning lots 'faster' than you would if you only picked up words during active study time (active study time being when you ONLY are focusing on study activities: like reading chinese, watching cdramas, chatting/texting people, and looking up words)

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

I know people probably want me to answer this for roots but roots is so canon-compliant that getting into the little details really doesn’t add much to the story. instead, I’m gonna answer this one about call of the night!!!

what’s fun about call of the night is that imo it is canon-compliant, technically, if you squint, up until the late 18th century when I introduce cotn!Esme (who is honestly just a completely different character at this point). her presence, and her gift, is what alters the timeline and creates that canon divergence and why all the other tiny little details diverge as well. when vampires live alongside humans then suddenly (almost) everyone’s backstory has to change to fit that narrative!! so I love that most the cullens’ origin stories are so different—I think edward’s is the only one that hasn’t been talked about, but if it doesn’t come up in later stories then I’ll definitely share that one day—because I get to be more creative in that fun way that writing AUs allows!

I’ve been asked lots of little lore-related questions over the years, and since there’s going to be such a long gap in between books two and three, and there’s so many goddamn details in the first two fics, I’m going to put a little guide together at some point this or next year. it’ll basically be a CotN wiki when it’s done. that way, people who don’t feel like rereading before the novella or 3rd installment can just click around and refresh their memory. (I’ve also been told that a lot of Esme Details™️ are quite unclear, and that’s from people who’ve read CotN multiple times 💀)

hmmmm details details. I’m trying to think of things I can share that won’t spoil later stuff. I feel like so many people over the years have really asked all the right questions so far; if you browse through that link enough you'll get plenty of mindless bonus information! one thing that adds nothing to the story and that will never be mentioned in the text is that a few months ago lilia and I decided that instead of 9/11 never happening (boring, predictable) the same thing just happens on 9/12 (hilarious, galaxy-brained). so no, 9/11 isn't canon in the cotn!verse, but 9/12 is

23. Describe the physical environment in which you write. Be as detailed as possible. Tell me what’s around you as you work. Paint me a picture.

I probably do most of my writing in my bed even though, for the sake of my back, I try to sit at my desk more now as an adult. but alas, old habits die hard, yknow? I enjoy writing at night more and I love love love having the lights dimmed, candles lit, and some sort of ambient music playing in the background. I can’t listen to music with lyrics bc it distracts my brain too much, and I am not the type of person who can just “sit down and write for 20 minutes each day.” I struggle a lot with transitions when I don't have a strict plan/schedule for my day and that’s REALLY bad with writing. so when I DO write, I lowkey need to have at least a few hours of time set aside because I will write nonstop for that entire chunk of time. once I get going, stopping is something I only do because I have to, and rarely because I want to or because I just can’t go any longer. that's one of my weird superpowers: the ability to write for hours on end and get all the words out that I need to say. (and often times, too many words that aren’t even Needed)

but with all that said, now that I have a living room and a kitchen I can sit in (first time since 2019) I’ve been able to write in both!!!! which has been nice and refreshing!!!! unfortunately I haven’t been able to write too much since moving (even answering these asks has eaten into my carefully budgeted time) but i'm hoping to be able to get a few stories churned out (yes, including the cotn novella) this summer before the semester starts in the fall and podcast resumes!

Michal David’s “Furby A Shelby” (2001): A potential English translation? 😮

Hey Furby fans! If you know of someone who has in fact done this before, please let me know so I can properly credit and reblog/report on it! I did try looking around online for a few days but was unable to turn up anything else on my own.

Some of you may be familiar with the several unofficial-to-official Furby-centric and Furby-inclusive music albums that have been released over the years; some from the USA, some from Europe, and some from Latin America. With a little digging around, you can find much of this music available online, mostly on YouTube and Spotify... but did you know that two of these albums were released exclusively in Czechia? Furby wiki frequenters may already be acquainted with the titles: Cesta Kolem Světa - Music Party (Around the World - Music Party) 2001 and 22 Dětských Hitů (22 Children’s Hits) 2002

Fortunately for us, 22 Children’s Hits can be listened to in its entirely on YouTube here. For Music Party, well... it gets a bit tougher.

On the Furby fandom wiki page for Music Party, there is a single comment from 2018 where a Furby fan bemoans their inability to listen to this album in full. Even when browsing Czech merchant sites in attempts to outright purchase the CD or cassette, it can be difficult to come across. Neither English translated lyrics nor the original Czech lyrics for any of the songs don’t seem to be listed anywhere. The album features several odes to various toys/family entertainment properties. Only a single song from the album is available to listen to online, and I believe it is thanks to the fervor and tenacity of the Furby fandom that it is so. That song is “Furby A Shelby”! You can listen to it in the embedded video below.

So, what about that translation? Hand over the goods, old man. Recently, I have made a friend in Czechia. I was sharing Furby related things with him when he remarked how excited he was to see someone from outside the country who had heard of a Czech musician in any capacity. A bit later, I found myself unable to resist... please help, how can i get into the vocaloid fandom?

my favourite vocaloids are kafu and mimi, i listen to a bunch of well-known vocaloids like uh lost one's weeping, goodbye declaration, king, phony, marshall maximiser, deathly loneliness attacks, noise of rain etc etc. basically i am interested in vocaloid and the songs but i don't know anything about the characters or the very well-known songs (which i do want to know about)

what should i do? how did you join the fandom?

i mean this as lightheartedly as possible but honestly i'm not sure how to answer... i don't think anyone quite formally joins a fandom, you just start posting about it or interacting with people who post about it and then you're part of fandom i suppose? i also might not be the best person to ask considering i'm actually not much of a fandom guy when it comes to vocaloid, i mostly listen to it in my lonesome, the only fandom i'm super active in at the moment is kamitsubaki studio's which is. a very small fandom (in terms of english speakers) to say the least LOL it just happens to overlap with kafu, but yeah to "join fandom" just start talking about it or talking to other people who do and that counts. ik there's vocaloid discord servers out there too and stuff but i'm not in any so i can't recommend any unfortunately

as for learning more things, uh, Hm, i mean if you just want more knowledge there's wikis for pretty much every vocalsynth software under the sun - that's about all the "character info" you're going to get because vocaloids (and other vocalsynths, i'm just using "vocaloid" as a catch-all here lol) aren't really characters. there is no vocaloid canon. if you see anyone drawing fanart with vocaloids interacting or seemingly having a story, that's literally all fanon/headcanon. if anyone tries to tell you vocaloid has a canon they are lying. sure there's official stuff like project sekai but that is not the only canon and doesn't apply to other vocaloid media. the most you're going to find on most characters is maybe a sentence or two about personality, maybe their age, and of course their appearance... usually anyways, some vocaloids don't even have appearances LOL and anything that is "canon" is merely a suggestion! like yeah ok the wiki says miku is 16 but that is a suggestion not a rule. people just take the box art and go wild with their interpretations. so i would not fret about that too much, any vocaloid you like is whatever they are to you! (sorry if you already knew some/all of that i was just assuming from the tone of your post that maybe you didn't)

oh and as for knowing the popular songs... tbh i do not keep up with what's popular very well myself, since i was younger i just find music from browsing youtube and sometimes NND LMAO but if u want to know more about vocaloid's history/the classics, there's this google sheet i found a while back that's basically a history lesson full of a ton of different important songs and why they're important... you can also browse through past vocacolles for songs (vocaloid community event that happens once a year, lots of songs get released during that time) or niconicodouga's rankings... but tbh i wouldn't worry too much about knowing what's popular all the time unless u really want to, just listen to what you like

A note for the ‘Fam <3

Hi guys <3

So the UK is now commencing Lockdown 3.0, which although necessary, will be causing some people a great deal of stress and anxiety. Being required (by law) to stay home 24/7 will no doubt be a daunting and depressing prospect for many people, and it’s more important than ever that we look out for each other as we approach the home stretch.

I am not intimately familiar with the lockdown situations in other countries, but know that people everywhere are continuing to make sacrifices and adjust their lifestyles around the ongoing yet traumatic ‘new normal’.

On that note, here are a few reminders from a certain family we all know and love.

💙 Scott Tracy, our resident Sky Turnip, would like to remind you to stick to a routine of sorts. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time, doing one productive task every day and maintaining a regular meal timetable will help give each day a basic structure that you can rely on, even on the ones when you might not be feeling your best.

💚 Virgil Tracy, our resident Land Cabbage, would like to remind you to exercise whenever you can in whatever way you can. On a self-care level, exercise is an excellent distraction from anxious and unwelcome thoughts, plus the bonus order of endorphins will regulate sleep and act as natural mood lifters. Walking the dog, a session on the Wii fit or even doing housework are all excellent ways of getting the blood pumping.

💖 John Tracy, our resident Space Carrot, would like to remind you to drink plenty of water and to eat as healthily as possible. Dehydration is the most common culprit when it comes to fatigue, headaches, and brain fog. Fill a drinks container in the morning and carry it around with you all day to save lots of unnecessary trips to the sink. Snack on fruit, wholemeal toast, veggies with dips (because raw veggies are gross) and nuts. But most importantly...always leave room for dessert!

💛 Gordon Tracy, our resident Sea Bean, would like to remind you to talk if you’re struggling. One thing that I see repeatedly is people feeling as if they have to be in dire straits before they can ask for help. You don’t. Feel like your thoughts are running away with you? Talk about it. Feel like your situation is spiralling? Talk about it. Feel down for no apparent reason? Talk about it. It takes real bravery to admit when you’re struggling, and sometimes talking can feel like too much. Rest assured, there is ALWAYS someone who will listen, and most importantly, there is ALWAYS someone who will care. If you’re unable to reach out to family and friends for support, turn to your online friends instead. The bonds forged via the internet are often just as strong (and sometimes stronger) than those formed under real life circumstances. Reach out to the Thunderfam. PM someone. Put out an SOS post. Just don’t make suffering in silence an option.

LISTEN UP JQ FAM, IMMA TELL YOU WHAT I WENT THROUGH TO FIND INFORMATION (AND A PICTURE!!) OF THIS ACTUAL REAL LIFE JONNY QUEST FLOAT THAT EXISTED IN THE 90s.

THE BEGINNING: One day I was browsing Questfan dot com and came across an eyewitness account that this spectacular gift to humanity existed and it was in the Rose Parade. Looking deeper, I find a snippet from 1996 of a contest in which the first prize winner could ride on the float.

AND THAT’S IT. THAT’S ALL THAT WAS DOCUMENTED ON THE COLLECTIVE HUMAN KNOWLEDGEBASE THAT IS THE INTERNET.

THE RESEARCH: With basically a rumor and wish to start with, I reached out to the Tournament of Roses Association for information. They’re super nice and happy to help, but also it was 2020 and everything is basically shut down including their archives except on every third day of a waning moon or something, so I’m hyped to get ANY help at all and this is still way more than I expected. A couple weeks pass and I follow up but they still weren’t able to get into the archives room, which are from the ancient days of the 90s and have not been digitized. And then the omens are auspicious and they can enter, and .... they can’t find anything. They assure me they will continue to look. I remain hopeful. But doubts that this thing really exists start to set in.

STEP 2: With still absolute fuck all of information, I reach out to the Pasadena City Library. A few weeks go by and.... THEY GET BACK TO ME WITH ONE (1) PAGE SCANNED FROM THE PARADE PROGRAM! AND IT’S AMAZING. The page includes this bit, nestled between information on the Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Museum's Congress of Fancy Range Riders, and the Pickerington Tiger Marching Band:

ISN’T IT AMAZING?? PROOF THAT THIS THING EXISTED, AT LEAST ON PAPER, MISSPELLED “JOHNNY QUEST” AND ALL.

It importantly includes TWO LEADS: The City of Alhambra, which submitted the float, and the Phoenix Decorating Company, which built it.

AND SO: Email the City of Alhambra Parks & Recs Dept, email the City of Alhambra Library, email the Phoenix Decorating Company, and follow up with the Tournament of Roses Association with the new info.

MEANWHILE ON YOUTUBE: I have been doing this excruciatingly boring thing where I find home videos people have uploaded to YouTube of the parade to see if any caught the float on camera. The new find from the Pasadena Library reenergized me for this vampirically-draining task. So I resume my search. AND THEN. ONE MINUTE INTO A VIDEO I GOT A ONE (1) SECOND GLIMPSE OF THIS BEAUTY:

THAT BLURRY ELEPHANT IS THE FIRST PHOTGRAPHIC PROOF I EVER FOUND THAT THIS WAS MORE THAN JUST CONCEPT ART AND A COLLECTIVE FEVRE DREAM.

Through some more internet sleuthing, I found an absolute TREASURE of a 1996 video from KTLA 5 News about THE AMAZING POSSIBILITIES OF THIS NEW THING CALLED THE INTERNET -- their website, for the first time ever, documents the entire 108th Tournament of Roses Parade. GUESS WHAT PARADE THE JQ FLOAT WAS IN? YEAH THAT’S RIGHT.

ARCHIVE DOT ORG TO THE RESCUE. FOUND AN ACTUAL 1997 WEBPAGE CAPTURE OF THIS THING, AND IT INCLUDED THAT GEM OF A PHOTOGRAPH AT THE TOP OF THIS POST. JONNY QUEST CHARACTER WAVING AND ALL.

Note that even the great resources of a 1997 webpage did not include a full photograph of this float. As far as I can tell so far, one does not exist.

PUBLIC LIBRARIES AGAIN TO THE RESCUE: The City of Alhambra Public Library also got back to me WITH LOCAL NEWS ARTICLES ABOUT THIS BABY. YAY LOCAL NEWS. ALL LOVE TO PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

My other leads sadly haven’t gotten anywhere. Some fantastically nice people responded, but with lockdown, getting into any records right now is very difficult. And seriously it can wait until it’s safe, I’m surprised I got as much as I have.

portal 2 project???

portal 2 has an AMAZING narrative. AMAZING. but if you want to rewatch the story... you cant. your two options are to watch let’s plays and randomly skip around to hopefully hear all the dialogue, or to read the quotes on the wiki... which are seperated by character, not scene, and dont give environmental details. this makes it impossible for people who dont want to put in a massive amount of time in to experience the story of the game in one definitive place. so, i propose:

THE PORTAL 2 PROJECT

the end product of this project would be a video, posted to YouTube, that has all of the relevant scenes and dialogue in order. it would play out like a movie, so people who haven't or don't want to play the game can still enjoy and understand the story in its entirety. it would use screen recordings of the game, so you can see whats happening and hear it.

what would be included in the video:

-any moment where there is dialogue (exceptions listed below)

-plot relevant details: for some examples, getting the portal gun, finding a rattman den, introducing a new puzzle element, when cave says that portals can be placed on the moon. (this is to better help people who aren't familiar with the franchise understand what the things they're seeing on the screen are.) (most of these would be short clips: for example, when hard light bridges are introduced, the clip would show chell walking up to it and standing on it, and then the video would move on.)

-major scenes, obviously. an example is when chell falls into the pit or unlocks old aperture.

-small, funny details. (without lingering for too long.) it wouldn’t be portal 2 if you dont show the little details! examples include the borealis dock, the elevator room screens, or when wheatly is monologuing and you can go back and he’ll keep monologuing (”you’re at my mercy! wait- come back! (chell goes back) FOOL! you’re at my mercy, and i dont have any!”

-exploring the enviroment: for example, the screen recorder would stop to look at the awards in old aperture, zoom in on chell’s name for the potato experiment, listen to the optional/hidden cave experiment dialogue, as well as look at old posters and signs that tell you about the dangers of old ap. just so the audience is grounded.

-ive touched on this in other bullet points, but not everyone has the time or willpower to look for the little hidden things in the game. this would make sure that you get a very full, portal 2 experience.

what would NOT be included:

-puzzle solving. some chambers take a few minutes to solve, and there is no dialogue. this interrupts the story. unless the puzzle solving is relevant to the plot, like quickly introducing new mechanics to the audience, it wont be included.

-unimportant dialogue. for example, in the neurotoxin generator area, whealtly will ramble for - i think i lasted 4 or 5 minutes before i left - a while, just trying to convince the neurotoxin generator to shut itself off or something. while entertaining, it takes away from the focus of the project.

an example of the formatting:

i imagine the format to look something like this: (im using chapter 1 as an example)

-full, uncut opening with the wheately escape. the cameraman waits at the door before opening it so you get his full dialogue. ~5 minutes

-chell goes into her old relaxation vault, listens to the announcer, puts a button on the pressure pad, then enters the elevator. this introduces the button/cube mechanic. (this scene comes directly after the last, with no cuts). since there is announcer dialogue and new mechanics, this stays relatively uncut. ~1 minute

-chell exits elevator, hears funny announcer dialogue. the camera looks at the room for 5 seconds so the audience understands the setting for the scene, as well as the act. ~15-20 seconds

-chell presses a button to open a portal. this is the first time a portal is seen. she walks through the portal. this introduces the core mechanic of the game. (~30 seconds) (once the mechanic has been used once or twice, the rest of the puzzle is cut)

that would be the basic format. for things like multiple uneventful test chambers in a row, it would show slow fading shots of the test chamber number so you understand that time is passing. this would be intercut with shots of the setting.

HOW CAN I GET HELP / THIS PROJECT STARTED??

getting all of this footage is too much for one person. editing it... is too much for one person. ALL OF THE FOOTAGE HAS TO COME FROM PEOPLE WORKING ON THIS PROJECT. IT CANT COME FROM OTHER PEOPLES YOUTUBE VIDEOS. For this project, I’ll need people to record the footage, people to help edit the footage, and 1-3 people who know the story well and are willing to go over the game’s plot and determine what scenes and details we need, so the records know what to record and what to focus on.

Do you want to help capture footage? if so, youll need:

-access to the PC version of the game with LOW LAG gameplay

-a screen recorder program. it CANNOT have a watermark on the finished product. needs to be high resolution footage.

-(the recordings will NOT feature your voice or a face cam.)

-(you do not need mods and please leave the portal gun with its base texture)

-(id be comfortable with each screen recorder person to cover around 1-2 chapters... so maybe 4-5 people, unless i can find more. youd be following some directions on what to record. you do not need to edit, just get the footage.)

Can’t do that? Can you EDIT video footage? you’ll need:

-a video editor. high quality. i dont know the editing industry, i dont know what software exists.

-MUST be able to export it without a watermark and in high quality.

-(each editor will be responsible for a chapter or chapters. then render your final product. one editor will put all of the finished chapters together. this means you can use different software from the other editors, and will have a good amount of control over your assigned part. i dont have a number for how many editors there will be. id like more than one.)

Can’t do that? What about choosing the important scenes and details and acting as a sort of ‘writer’ for the plot? You’ll need:

-a good knowlege of the game and its history and fun facts. if youre obsessed with this game and franchise... yeah same. but as long as youre interested and know it well, thats fine

-be able to browse the wiki

-time to review the game by watching lets plays or playing it yourself

-be able to choose the right details and communicate that to the screen recorders and editors. remember my example about chapter one earlier? youd have to lay it out in a similarly comprehensive way.

-take constructive criticism

-must be older than 14 for this. youve gotta make a lot of decisions in this role. ive seen some really creative and talented high schoolers, so thats where im drawing the age line.

-(im hoping for 1-4 of these people, including myself.)

The purpose of this project is to make it so you can relive the portal 2 plot without having to replay the full game. Other methods do not exist. No one video shows the plot in order with ‘filler’ removed. Voice lines exist in text form, but do not capture the visual aspect of the game, or give context, and are not a full experience. This story is a masterpiece and deserves to be edited so it is comprehensive and all in one place. No one will claim credit for owning portal 2 or writing the story - the video is showing gameplay, and just so happens to be the relevant gameplay. However, screen capture, editing, and direction credits will be given to everyone who participates. This project will allow you to introduce friends and family to the game without sending them a video where only 5 minutes out of the 1 hour video is relevant. I have wanted this project for a while, but I’ve realized that I can’t do it alone. Even if you can’t help directly, please spread the word and reblog.

Last Monday of the Week: 2021-02-15

Busy week with a lot of new things. Good for everything but creativity.

Listening: The Session 0 and 1 for LoadingReadyRun’s Vampire game. I’ve never played Vampire before but it has always sounded rad and the second best way to get into the basics of a TTRPG is to observe a game. I’m listening via my podcatcher but they do video talking heads on YouTube. LRR is great, I only got onto them a year or so ago because of a friend on IRC. I don’t watch their streams because I have no interest in video game streams.

Reading: Finally got around to Worm. It’s pretty compelling so far, although it is funny to read a detailed description of what browsing a wiki is like. I haven’t gotten to the meat of the story yet but I’m looking forward to it. It has been in my To Read bookmarks for like two years. Contains a depressingly accurate vision of high school so far.

Also a bunch of misc fanfic I’ve had open in Firefox for a while. I went on a tag read, no I will not tell you what it was.

Watching: Space Sweepers, new movie on Netflix. Korean sci-fi space adventure. Pulpy, ridiculous, incredible. Go watch it.

Playing: Played a couple sessions of Eliza, that Zachtronics Visual Novel. It’s a story about a programmer who worked on a team developing a psychologist AI, burnt out for a few years, and is now working as a proxy for said AI, serving as a human face for people who are seeking treatment from the AI. It’s a very specific experience that I don’t know much about, the only hard-core burn out megacorp who hire a lot of programmers around here is Amazon so while I’ve heard the horror stories, we don’t really have a Seattle.

I’ve had Eliza in my steam library for a while but it (along with a couple others like Into The Breach) had weird bugs on my Nvidia graphics card so I’m only getting to them now that I have the AMD card.

Making: A lot of soldering and wiring and junk for $dayjob, some pictured here. I haven’t done much practical work installing industrial automation so that was a fun learning experience all things considered. I have spent two weeks watching packaging machines and reporting back on how they break, but I didn’t get to fiddle with anything more complex than the general UI.

A very small amount of embroidery. Spent a while sorting some pigeon and bug photos I took over the past few weeks so those will come up soon. The fool’s gold beetle is one of those.

Handed off a backup battery thing to my brother so that he can keep his internet connection going during power cuts, which have become a little more frequent here as generators are taken offline for maintenance.

Computers Slot: Not a lot of software this week, but shouting out the general concept of Trackballs. They’re good! Great if you don’t have a lot of space on a desk, or if you don’t use mice very much and want something you can just butt right up against your keyboard so that you can reach it without moving too far. Note ideal for gaming, especially wireless ones, but otherwise great. I picked up a new one this week because the old one was making an annoying high pitched noise.

The wireless link on this one is a little finnicky, I need to see if that’s my fault for orienting it weirdly in the USB hub or if it’s just bad and I need to send it back. When it gets a clear connection, which is most of the time, it’s a wonderful little thing. 2.4GHz has been misbehaving in my room in general lately, so I might have to see if there’s crosstalk between the wifi and this mouse. Positively festooned in buttons.

Mr Brown’s Bookshop and Cafe

(I know this is a Father Brown modern au but I didn’t think Father Brown would be a priest and own a book shop all at once so I decided he would be Mr Brown just this once)

Arthur Brown owns Kembleford’s favourite bookshop. (I know according to Fandom Wiki his first initial is J but I felt Arthur suited him more than any J names I could think of) The books that he stocks are definitely a reflection of his own literary tastes, but he likes to think that this is what keeps his customers coming back. He is always happy to see Lady Felicia when she hosts her book club; it may only have one loyal member at present but he’s sure word will get round, he always tries to mention it. There was one week where membership appeared to double, however this later proved to be her ladyship’s own doing. Her niece needed to "learn some hard lessons about life" and so naturally, being brought to the bookshop so that she could get a job serving teas and coffees was the perfect solution.

Bridget McCarthy is most definitely in charge of the shop's adjoining cafe, thank you very much. Although she does consider Bunty Windermere to be most helpful. And if she makes suggestions about what to serve that prove to be very popular indeed, well, that’s just a bonus. John Goodfellow (I think the fandom has collectively decided that this is his first name) is quite the regular to the cafe, he will sometimes be sat in a corner nursing a pot of tea with his book for Lady Felicia’s discussion group; other times he will be set up with folders of paperwork and his laptop and headphones for what Mrs McCarthy assumes is some of those “Zoomy” meetings she’s heard about.

Sidney Carter has helped Mr Brown in his shop for as long as he can remember. It had first been encouraged in his early years as “something to keep him entertained and out of trouble”. He still enjoys the free scones that are provided, well, free so long as he is quick enough. And he can often be found restocking the shelves nearest the cafe so that he can keep an eye on what sweet treats are on offer and when they look the most unguarded. He will also chat with Bunty about the eligible patrons who visit the shop, and they often help each other to strike up conversations with the objects of their affection for that particular week.

On on particular day, Goodfellow is sat in the back of the cafe, near the fiction bookshelves, and can be heard chipping in to conversations about deadlines and work loads and the like. Sidney is reshelving some mystery novels (a particular favourite of Mr Brown to order in) and half listening to hear how John’s meeting is going. Suddenly his ears prick up: “Yeah, Tom, they do have quite a lot of detective books; I’ve seen some first editions too. Was it Towards Zero that you need? I spotted it the other day” It was obvious that Goodfellow had probably gone out of his way to browse the shelves at some point for his friend clearly looking to add to their Agatha Christi collection. Sid smirked at this, people who collected first editions of any sort were always quite endearing customers to chat too. He decided to visit Bunty at the cafe counter and if that happened to take him behind Goodfellow’s chair and so able to quickly glance at what this “Tom” character looks like, well that’s just the layout of the shop now, isn’t it?

Thomas Sullivan had only really started listening to this meeting when John had mentioned the book he was looking for. Then his attention to the conversation was lost again when he spotted a tall young man with a charming smile walk past in the background of Goodfellow’s chat window. He quickly pulled himself out of his daydream in time to nod and agree to sorting out another set of email enquires that he really hadn’t wanted to do (”damn it!”). But as the meeting drew to a close he managed to ever so casually double check with John where this bookshop was in Kembleford and promised that he would stop buy to support the small business and add to his mystery novel collection.
