Summary: After a rather vivid dream, John is unsure if he should show up at the National Gallery to meet Sherlock. He lets his gut feeling decide for him, and some time later he finds himself in the room Sherlock indicated in the postcard. When Sherlock is nowhere to be seen, John suspects it's all been a ruse. European Fic Writers' Retreat ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Fic Writers! (Sherlock fandom and beyond!)

This is an announcement of the European Fic Writers' Retreat that is very likely going to take place in Germany from 7-10 August 2025.

Following in the footsteps of the amazing Canadian Fic Writers' Retreat that has been taking place for many years courtesy of the wonderful @hubblegleeflower, there will now finally be a similar event in Europe this summer, namely in Germany!

Here are the details: -Arrival from 4pm on 7 August. -Checkout at noon on 10 August. -Price: max. 360 euros, possibly less (see below). This includes accommodation and food (which we'll still have to cook ourselves, however).

There will be 2 or 3 workshops/activities each day. The rest of the time is for writing, hanging out and making new fandom friends. Also there will be daily walks to the supermarket (10 mins) to get all the food we need. :)

There is place for 8-16 people, depending on how many people are willing to share a room. (There are 8 separate bedrooms with two separate beds in each.) The location is in the Eifel region, in the very west of Germany. You have to arrange your own transport there, although there might be a possibility of getting a ride from Koblenz to the accomodation, if enough people travel by car.

N.B. If you are willing to share a room with one fellow writer, and at least one other person is also willing to do this, the price is 130 euros lower for each of you who are sharing a room! (i.e. the costs will be max. 230 euros per person)

Be aware that this retreat isn't anything fancy or well-organised; it's just me (@shirleycarlton) having made a reservation for a large holiday house in hopes of finding enough fellow fanfic (slash) writers who would like to attend and spend some quality time together.

Originally, this concept arose from the Sherlock fandom, and I (Shirley) personally exclusively write johnlock. However, a lot of Sherlock writers have (understandably) moved on to other fandoms, so whether you're currently into Good Omens, Our Flag Means Death, or RWRB, it's all fine, as John Watson would say.

If you are interested in attending and would like to stay updated, please fill out your details in this form (even if you're not at all sure yet, as you can indicate this also on the form). This way, I can gauge interest and also contact you with more information once I have it.

The deadline to register properly will be around 1 June, but keep in mind that there's only place for a limited number of people.

John runs into one of The Married Ones at Tesco. Prompts: neighbour, desire, horse.

John’s at Tesco when he runs into their next-door neighbour.

“John, hi!”

“Paul, how are you?”

“Fine. Don’t need to bother asking how you are, do I?” He winks mischievously, much to John’s mortification.

He and Sherlock were overwhelmed by desire the night before and might’ve been slightly louder than usual.

“Don’t worry, mate,” Paul reassures him. “We’re envious, that’s all.”

John can barely open his mouth before Paul is leaving.

“You’re a dark horse, John, I like that!” Paul calls out as he heads to the checkout counters.

John stands there and wishes the ground would swallow him up.

Victorian Edition, Part 2: Five Recs + 2

I promised a second part of this edition of RRR, and it looks like Part 2 won't be the last. I've read so many fantastic ACD fics that I'd like to share:

The Beginning of Always / @mydogwatson : John Watson wants to be a doctor. Sherlock Holmes wants to be a consulting detective. Most of all, they both want to be loved. Author note: The idea of using Joseph Bell [the inspiration, in part, for ACD in creating Holmes] came to me from @thegildedbee and I was excited to run with it. 

My note: If you're looking for well-written, fully imagined ACD stories, you could go to no better author than @mydogwatson. Mostly short stories, lots of Christmas ones.

Bad Dog by RatTale: During a hard case Holmes and Watson part ways after an argument, and now Holmes suddenly has more to worry about than missing children.

My note: RatTale has written a number of stories, all of them loved by me. This one was taken down for a while, but has recently been restored.

A Pertinacious Idea by @victorianpining : "I am compelled to admit that, having taken my pen in my hand, I do begin to realize that the matter must be presented in such a way as may interest the reader."

Summary: One wintry evening, Dr. Watson returns home to find that Holmes has rekindled their most longstanding disagreement by creating his own rendition of one of Watson's narratives. Braced for criticism, in reading Holmes' story Watson instead finds the one thing he had long believed Holmes to be incapable of giving.

My note: Go read this! Beautifully written.

Heaven and Earth by @a-candle-for-sherlock : At first, the wonder of his resurrection had blazed so bright that I saw nothing else. Joy, joy impossible had been returned to me; death itself had been undone. But as the miracle faded into everyday light I began to see that time had not been likewise reversed; time had done its implacable work. He was not the same as he had been. 

My note: tender, beautiful. I've reread this one a thousand times.

Rewriting History by rachelindeed ( @educatedinyellow): A correspondence between Holmes and Watson in the immediate aftermath of the Great War in which they discuss questions of history both public and personal.

My note: another one I've reread over and over. Developing relationship, Thucydides. That says it all.

Plus two of my own:

The Silence Between Us by @calaisreno : Watson is a proper Victorian man, a stranger to himself, unwittingly complicit in his own unhappiness. On a journey to London to see Holmes after ten years of silence, he tries to understand their broken friendship and his own grief.

My note: This might be my single favorite ACD story I've authored. This unhappy, conflicted Watson finally breaking down and realising he loves Holmes is one I cherish.

Bodyguard by @calaisreno : Captain John Watson, wounded in Afghanistan, is looking for employment. Sherlock Holmes is looking for something else. Fortunately, they can solve one another's problems.

My note: One of my oldest stories on AO3, this one doesn't get read much, but it's funny! A casefic, with an enthusiastically involved Watson (in drag for one scene) and an indulgent Holmes.

A Voice in the Dark

Before he met Sherlock, John had no special opinions about voices. Not entirely true. Some voices could make his brain explode; if they were shrieking, and he hated whining with a vengeance.

When John first laid his eyes on Sherlock, he looked so young. Hence the shock of that deep baritone. In John’s (stupid) opinion, young people, people looking like Sherlock, shouldn’t have a voice best described as dark, melting chocolate. But that was Sherlock Holmes for you, a contradiction in every sense of the word.

Much sooner than John expected, he dared to make a move. If he’d been brave enough, he’d done it that first night at Angelo’s, because by God Sherlock looked so beautiful in the candlelight. Somehow though, John sensed it wasn’t the right time. Sherlock wasn’t ready. And he was working. He’d made it quite clear how important The Work, was to him. 

So, John waited patiently, until the opportunity arose.

Sherlock told him he sometimes did not talk for days on end. That was a blatant lie. The man never knew how to shut up. Which suited John just fine. Mostly. Listening to Sherlock’s voice was John’s favourite thing. It didn’t matter what he was saying. Mostly, he didn’t want an answer from John anyway. The great detective needed a sounding board, and apparently John was a considerable upgrade from the skull Sherlock had used in the past.

A week after John shot the bad cabbie, he started to drop the occasional remark about Sherlock’s appearance, touched him briefly when he passed him; everything transpired securely inside the flat. Sherlock got flustered enough as it were, and John didn’t want to spook or embarrass him when others were around.

The evening Sherlock addressed the matter, he’d been supine on the sofa for hours, not speaking a word. John missed his voice like a lost limb. He sighed relieved when the dark voice weaved its way to John’s mind and heart.

“John?”

“Yes, Sherlock.”

“Why do you…”

It was clear Sherlock had lost his nerve, but John didn’t want to wait any longer. The tension between them was a tangible thing at this stage, and the good doctor needed release, lest he combust.

“Touch you and – “

“Yes. I don’t understand. Do you…like me…that way?”

The man’s insecurity almost broke John’s heart, so he stood and walked over to the sofa where he crouched down.

“Haven’t you observed how I can’t take my eyes off you? That I close my eyes when you speak. How my steady hands tremble when you’re near me.”

“I have, but I didn’t trust my observations. No one has ever…”

“You can absolutely trust them. The question is, do you want me to continue, or do you want to take it further?”

“Further,” Sherlock whispered.

“I was hoping you would say that,” John replied in a hushed voice.

He lifted his hand to cradle Sherlock’s face, tilting it just so. Sherlock looked transfixed, his eyes roaming John’s face, resting on his lips. John leaned in, Sherlock closed his eyes, and parted his lips slightly. The sight made John’s inner organs sing with joy and arousal.

The kiss was soft and as tender as John could manage. He wanted to put every feeling he had for Sherlock into it. A moan woke him from his reverie, and then large hands pulled him closer. John deepened the kiss, teasing a bit with the tip of his tongue. The grip around his shoulder tightened, and John threw caution to the wind and devoured those plush lips as if his life depended on it.

“Take me to bed,” Sherlock murmured when they parted for air.

“God, your voice. Do you know how much I love your voice?”

Sherlock, having momentarily composed himself, smirked and nodded. A lovely blush graced his neck and John was desperate to taste it.

“Bed,” he commanded like the captain he was, and Sherlock was more than willing to abide by it.

“Do you know how gorgeous you are?”

John’s eyes took in the naked consulting detective, adorned with several hickeys and love bites. The flush was back, and John chased it down, licking and kissing, while his hands teased the peaked nipples until Sherlock all but sobbed.

“John, please. I need…”

“Talk to me, love. What to you need? Don’t be shy, sweetheart.”

The endearments, John realised, made Sherlock squirm and a shy smile formed on his lips.

“I need you. I’m so hard, it hurts. Whatever you want, John. Just…please.”

“Oh, love. Where’s your lube?”

Sherlock just waved a hand, the other hand moving towards his throbbing erection. John caught it easily, sucking two of his fingers, while simultaneously searching the bedside table for the preferred bottle. With a slurp, John released the long digits, and drizzled a generous amount of lube into his hand. He was just as aroused as Sherlock, but he had more experience and his iron will was legendary.

A relieved sigh escaped them both when John wrapped his hand around both their cocks.

“Oh, John!” Sherlock exclaimed. “Whatever you do, don’t stop.”

“Goody, yeah?” John inquired.

“An understatement,” Sherlock panted. “Harder. I need more.”

“Alright, sweetheart,” John cooed and quickened the pace and tightened the grip.

Moments later, Sherlock erupted like a volcano, and the sounds he made, pulled John over the edge as well.

Later, John learned that Sherlock was the clingiest cuddler he’d ever come across, which pleased him immensely.

“I like it when you call me…those names,” the detective murmured into John’s neck.

“Mm, I could tell. You blushed adorably every time,” John told him. “Now, will you talk to me until I fall asleep?”

“Anything for you, John. What do you want me to say? Do you want a story, or shall I just prattle on about inane things like – “

A tiny snore from the lovely doctor, shut him up.

“Rude,” Sherlock huffed, but his besotted smile fooled no one.

Finally! I posted the first chapter of my FTH fic, A Study in Scale. The story lived for a year with me, everywhere I went, my traveling to the other side of the world, written in different sizes of notebooks, journals, and even napkins, speech-to-typed in Google doc, recorded on my phone whenever something came to my mind and I was in a weird place/ situation...

I had to do Tons of research, from geography and physiology to chemistry, history, and criminology, for this story, which is based on one of my lifelong dreams and fantasies. I went to sleep countless nights dreaming about having a companion like that, and now I wrote it in the form of a Sherlock fic.

I hope my Google history hasn't been checked during this time because they would be scared by the history, which includes things like "How long does it take to dissolve a body in sulfuric acid?"

Writers' Retreat without tumblr??

Hopefully this isn't necessary at all, but I've been seeing some rumors about tumblr possibly not being around forever, and started to panic think about what this would mean for the future of the European Fic Writers' Retreat. (I honestly shudder to think what it would mean for fandom in general...)

There have been quite a lot of people who have replied in the notes of the Retreat announcement that although they can't make it this year, they would love to come another time. But how will I be able to reach you if tumblr is no longer around by then?

Again, I desperately hope this will never be necessary, but just in case: feel free to fill in this form in order to share your contact details with me, so I can approach you via email next year! (Just choose the "next year" option at the end.)

I really hope to start a new tradition that will continue many years. :) (Just like the original Canadian retreat that has been going since 2016 already!)

FIC WRITERS RETREAT 2025 REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

EIGHTH annual Fic Writers' Retreat, first held in 2016, coming once again in 2025.

When: August 7-10 2025

Where: Five Oaks Retreat Centre, Paris, Ontario, Canada

What is it? Four days spent with other fic writers, at all levels of experience. There will be a mix of workshops (Topics TBA and open to suggestions), prompts and challenges, and plenty of independent writing time for your own personal projects.

It’s also an opportunity to make connections with people who share your interests and passions, and where you can focus on your own goals and creativity.

Cost (in CANADIAN DOLLARS): $480.00

Here’s what you get for it:

All meals (dinner Thursday to lunch Sunday)

Accommodation (Shared rooms but NOT shared beds - sorry)

Daily workshops and writing sessions (planned and delivered by participants - you too, if you want!)

A retreat in a beautiful riverside setting

WiFi included

Registration Process:

Select a payment option: a) e-transfer (Canadian residents only) or b) PayPal (link in registration form)

Make your deposit of $240 CAD (50% of total cost) to complete your registration

Second payment is due on July 10, 4 weeks before the retreat begins.

Space will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. There are 22 spaces available, after which names will be placed on a waiting list (no payment will be required unless you are offered a spot).

Travel to the venue is not included. However, shared transport from Toronto (airport or other hubs) can often be arranged with other participants.

Several participants (and the organizer) live in the area, and we have always been able to arrange ride-shares from the Toronto Airport to the various venues. These connections will be arranged after registration.
