Screenings : The Shining (1980)

You think you really and truly know some films based on the number of times you’ve seen them.  You own it in multiple formats, you’ve watched it countless times, you’ve studied every nuance of every aspect, and in your mind, there are no secrets left to unfold.  Then, you see it for the first time on the big screen, and something happens... the experience is grander... the immersion is deeper... it just feels different.  This was my recent experience at AFS Cinema seeing Stanley Kubrick’s classic film The Shining on the big screen for the first time. 

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), an ex-teacher looking for an escape, accepts a job watching the remote, beautifully massive Overlook Hotel from October to May so that it does not succumb to the harsh elements of winters in the Rocky Mountains.  During the interview, Overlook manager Stuart Ullman (Barry Nelson) informs Jack of the dark fate mate with a prior groundskeeper and his family, but despite the warnings, Jack moves in for the winter with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd) in tow.  Danny has episodes with his ‘imaginary’ friend Tony, ‘the little boy who lives in his mouth’, and as the staff is clearing for the winter, Danny meets Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers), the Overlook’s head cook.  Dick shares an ability to telepathically communicate with Danny that he refers to as ‘shining’, and he sternly warns Danny about the hotel, especially Room 237.  As the weeks go by, the family settles into the home, but as cabin fever sets in, tensions begin to arise.  Fuel is thrown on the fire when a supernatural presence begins to make itself felt by all members of the family, spiraling events out of control in truly horrifying ways.

More so than any other viewing I’ve had, the Overlook Hotel was the true star of my big screen experience.  The cavernous size of the location becomes crystal clear when outstretching the edges of the screen, and the way that it slowly reveals its true horrors to each character makes the claustrophobia that much greater.  I’ve seen this film countless times, but this was the first experience where it really and truly felt like Jack made some kind of contract with evil during the first appearance of Lloyd at the bar... mixing the ‘literal’ demons of the hotel with Jack’s personal demons of abuse and alcoholism hits like a ton of bricks when the Overlook connects with Jack.  The levels it terror it chooses for each member of the Torrance family is interestingly unique as well... Danny is given the most vivid and horrible imagery, Jack is given the most immersive experience, and Wendy gets psychological shock and confusion thrown in a flurry as it all comes crashing down.

If for no other reason, this film should be seen in theaters for the proper sonic experience.  The score hits like a true wall of sound, forcing its presence to be felt from the opening frames, and exerting its influence throughout.  Visually, the close-ups play with greater impact on the big screen, and the size of both the Overlook Hotel and its hedge maze are properly instilled into the viewer.  The presence of what some would consider ‘inconsistencies’ is easier to notice (chairs disappearing and reappearing between cuts, Jack’s typewriter changing color, spatial discrepancies), but they also add to the disorientation of the viewer, which becomes a surrogate for the character tension that makes it easier for us to feel what they feel (in my opinion).  The subtle but ever present use of colors throughout the film keeps the eye dancing around frames, as we segue between reds and browns, greens and yellows, grey tones and gold tones from scene to scene.  

Jack Nicholson was already iconic and on top of his game during this time, and he is running on all cylinders as Jack Torrance, blending anger, a quiet building rage, unhinged humor and brutal tension seamlessly from scene to scene.  Shelley Duvall and the terror she was put through during production was well documented, and the result is an uncomfortably unhinged woman on the verge of going to pieces, and only holding herself together for the sake of her son.  Danny Lloyd gives a surprisingly strong performance while managing to keep a childlike charm for most of the movie, which truly offsets his Tony performance (to the point where it’s easy to forget he is giving a masterful performance).  Scatman Crothers brings his iconic ways to the table, but fits in beautifully with the world created, as his concern for Danny is clear and present, and his ability to convey the unseen pulling him towards his doom plays perfectly.  These four do the majority of the heavy lifting, with brief but highly memorable appearances by Stuart Ullman, Barry Dennen, Philip Stone, Joe Turkel and Lisa and Louise Burns, plus cameos by Tony Burton and Anne Jackson rounding things out.

Sadly, this is my first big screen Kubrick experience, but this will certainly not be my last.  I’ve been a long time fan of his work, and will shamelessly name him as my favorite director forever, more than likely.  That being said, his work deserves to be seen in its intended format, and I had no idea that I could find new enjoyment in The Shining to the degree that I did during this viewing.
