Joel Miler x fem!reader
Word Count:
Warnings: Canon violence. Reader is Frank’s niece.
Author’s Note: A tiny bit of a filler chapter but don’t worry next chapter we’re gonna get some proper bonding with Joel and her
Series Masterlist | Talk to Me!
“Joel,” she practically hissed, keeping her hands in the air. A young boy held a gun above her, hands far steadier than anyone his age should be.
Ellie’s voice was trembling as she did the same thing. A gun was pointed at her head. “Joel, wake up.”
She hesitated a moment, glancing up at the young man that held the gun against Ellie’s temple. Then she stretched out just barely, kicking Joel in the shoulder pretty aggressively. He groaned a bit but shot up, looking at her in frustration –no doubt about to snap at her. But the combination of her wide eyes and the gun against Ellie’s head stopped him short.
The young man motioned for Joel to stay calm, as if that wasn’t the dumbest notion possible. The little boy put his finger to his lips, telling them to be quiet.
“Eyes on me, I’m not your enemy,” the young man finally said, looking between the three of them. “We don’t wanna have to hurt you. We wanna help you.”
Joel glanced between her and Ellie, before nodding once. “Okay.”
“Okay,” the young man repeated, looking at the boy once more before hesitating. “I don’t…I don’t really know what the next step is here. If I…If I lower my gun, we didn’t hurt you. So you don’t hurt us. Right?”
Joel’s eyes flashed again between her and Ellie, before he nodded once. “That’s right.”
The young man didn’t seem convinced, stepping closer to Ellie. “That’s a weird fucking tone man –,”
“No, no, that’s just how he sounds,” Ellie pleaded, closing her eyes as the gun grazed the back of her head.
“Seriously, he just sounds like an asshole all the time,” she offered as reassurance. “Joel, tell them he’s fine. It’s okay.”
Joel glared at her from his spot on the makeshift bed, breathing hard as he returned his attention to the young man. “Everything is great.”
“Joel, what the fuck –,” Ellie groaned.
“Okay, fine,” the young man decided, looking at the little boy now. “I’m gonna trust you. But you try anything and I shoot, you hear me?”
They all nodded, watching as he motioned to the little boy. Their hands moved quickly, and she recognized the motions as sign language. The child slowly stepped away from her, but the gun stayed fixed on her.
“Can I sit up?” Joel asked slowly, eyes darting between her and Ellie.
“Yeah. Slow. Do it slowly.”
With the guns lowered and out of their faces, Joel slowly sat up. The little boy pointed his gun at Joel, watching him closely as he sat up with his hands in the air. She let out a breath, slowly sitting up properly herself.
“Who are you?” Joel asked, looking up at the young man as he slowly lowered his gun.
“My name is Henry,” he explained, a wry smile coming to his face. “That’s my brother Sam. And I am…the most wanted man in Kansas City.”
“I think we’re running a close second,” she mumbled, reaching out to take Ellie and pull her back into her side.
“Yeah…yeah, I think you are.”
*****
By the following morning, after finding themselves fed and relatively well rested, Henry, Joel and her stood at the edge of the window of the skyscraper. As they stood at the window, taking in the view of the city, she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The city looked deserted, with hardly any signs of life or activity. There were no cars on the streets, no people walking around, and no signs of any kind of authority or law enforcement.
Her eyes darted around, taking in the details of the cityscape. She noticed the dead ends, the empty streets that led nowhere, and the buildings that had been reduced to rubble. It was clear that the city had been through hell, and the lack of government presence only added to the sense of chaos and uncertainty.
“There’s no FEDRA,” she pointed out, looking up at Joel. He was tracing the streets with his eyes, trying to map their way out of there.
“Not as of ten days ago,” Henry confirmed, glancing over at her now. She met his eyes, frowning deeply. “Welcome to Killer City. You spend twenty years ruining and murdering people –you know what happens?”
“They revolt,” Joel answered, crossing his arms over his chest. He looked at Henry now, eyes narrowed. “But you’re not FEDRA.”
“No,” Henry said. But there was a hesitation in his voice. She stepped towards Henry, trying to hear him better as he whispered. That feeling of unease started to creep further into her stomach and chest. “I’m worse –I’m a collaborator.”
Almost immediately, Joel pulled back. His fingers, quick and hard, grabbed the back of her jacket to pull her with him and away from Henry. “No way. I don’t work with rats.”
“Yes you fucking do,” Henry snapped, pointing at them. “Today you fucking do. I know this city –you don’t. You want out? I’m your only way.”
Joel’s grasp on her jacket slackened, but his touch on her back didn’t move. She glanced up at Joel for a moment, but turned her attention back to Henry as Sam suddenly started to giggle. Their attention turned to the two kids, and the tension in the room started to melt away. Henry looked down for a few moments, before looking to his little brother and Ellie. The two sat at the table, passing Sam’s writing pad back and forth as they spoke. Sam’s smile was enough for her to know that –regardless of what Henry had done in the past –whatever Henry did was for the little boy.
“How are we getting out then?” She finally settled on asking, looking between Henry and Joel. Her gaze settled on Joel. “Because we need to get out of here. I didn’t leave the safety of that stupid fence to die in Kansas.”
“You’re not gonna die in Kansas,” Joel corrected harshly, rolling his eyes at her.
She knew he was right; she shouldn't be thinking like this, but the unease that was consuming her was slowly turning into panic. It was overwhelming. The words escaped her lips before she could stop them, imagining the worst-case scenario.
“Oh yeah, with my luck, you’ll drag my body just outside the city and I’ll die there –,”
“Can you fuckin’ not right now?” He snapped at her, giving her a nasty look as his hand moved from her back to grab her arm, yanking her aside to scold her quietly. Joel's grip on her arm startled her as he yanked her aside to scold her. Her heart raced, and her palms grew clammy. Joel's voice was barely a whisper as he spoke to her, his grip on her arm barely tightening. His words were reassuring, but the fear still lingered within her. “I need you to stop,” he said, his grip on her tightening just barely. “You’re not gonna die –not here, not outside the city. D’you understand me?”
They stood in silence, facing each other as the tension in the air grew thicker by the second. His piercing gaze bore into her, unflinching and determined as he searched for any signs of defiance. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she tried to hold his gaze, but the intensity of his stare was almost too much to bear. Instead of arguing back, she swallowed hard and nodded once, the gesture conveying her acquiescence.
For a moment, the only sound was the sound of their breathing as they remained locked in their standoff. Finally, he stepped back, breaking eye contact and turning away from her and back to Henry.
“How are we gettin’ outta here?” Joel asked Henry now, his attention focused on the young man in front of them now.
“You’ll probably hate it, but…tunnels,” Henry offered, motioning over to the table.
Henry was right: Joel did hate the idea of the tunnels.
But it was their only hope.
*****
“This is actually the most terrifying place I’ve ever seen, and my mom took me to see House of 1000 Corpses opening night,” she commented, looking over the drawings all over the walls of the tunnels.
“What’s that?” Ellie asked, walking ahead of them with Sam.
“Horror movie,” Joel explained, though he was looking at the young woman next to him in concern. “I feel like that explains a lot about ya.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” She demanded, stopping short to stare at him with offense. But Henry and Joel kept walking, leaving her behind for a few seconds before she quickly caught back up. “Joel, what the –,”
“Holy shit, look at this!” Ellie exclaimed suddenly as Sam and her ran ahead of them.
The three adults looked at each other before hurrying after the two –only to stop in their tracks. The room around them looked like a makeshift daycare, with small tables set up with toys and what was once coloring pages. The walls were similar to the ones in the tunnels, but the ones around them were intensely drawn, covering every wall around them. Joel watched her closely; watched as her fingers traced over some of the pictures, taking in the last moments that he was certain she was imagining before hell had broken loose for whoever was down here.
“We should stay here for the night; get some rest,” Henry offered as Ellie and Sam started to play with the toys that had been left behind.
Joel opened his mouth to argue, but she put her hand on his arm, looking up at him with soft but wary eyes. “There’s not much we can do tonight anyway. Maybe we should just let them…,” she trailed off, and Joel followed her gaze to Ellie and Sam, who had found an old soccer ball. “Be kids for a little while?”
His gaze was hard, watching the two children for several moments before he finally huffed and sat down at the table there. She gave Henry a reassuring smile and followed Joel’s lead, sitting beside him and leaning back in her chair with a soft sigh. Henry gave them both a thankful smile, but didn’t join them –instead joining Sam and Ellie in their games on the other side of the room.
Joel watched her as she watched the three, taking in the softness that had replaced the fear and caution that filled the lines of her face the last several days. Something about the way she was able to return to that softness, even after the last two days and what was happening, pulled at his heartstrings. He knew better; he should have known better than to let her affect him like this. But between her and Ellie…Joel was afraid that he might be getting himself into trouble.
But he couldn’t stop himself. The way she looked at him the other night, when she told him she needed him –it crumbled that wall he had put up between them years ago.
———————————————————————————
“I…I don’t think we should keep doing this,” she murmured against his lips, just as he pulled back from her.
They stood in the kitchen of her home in Lincoln. Bill was fixing the generator out back, while Tess and Frank were in town. Joel had waited for her to kiss him first, afraid of pushing her too far after what happened outside the fence months ago. He’d never tell her, but what he did to that piece of shit FEDRA agent –he did more for her than for himself or Bill.
Over the last few years —through the stolen kisses and lingering touches —Joel could pretend things were normal. There in her kitchen, with clean water that ran and dishes in the sink and a hot meal on the table, he could pretend these kisses were domestic bliss and all his. That she was all his, and this was their life.
It was such a dangerous thought —one that he told her not to have; yet here he was, having it himself.
She wasn’t his, though. This wasn’t his life. Things weren’t normal, or domestic. And now, she was telling him she didn’t want him —this —anymore.
But her lips lingered just above his, and her voice was shaking as he dropped his hands from her hair. They sat limp at his sides, and her breath was coming out in rapid puffs as he pulled back from her. Tears were in her eyes, threatening to spill over her cheeks as she stepped away from him and hugged herself tightly.
“I don’t –it’s not you –I just –,”
“I get it,” he responded, though his tone was unnecessarily harsh. “I get it, darlin’, I do.”
“It’s just…Joel, after wh-what happened –,”
“You don’t need to explain yourself.” He held his hand up, shaking his head. “This wasn’t anything, remember? Just a favor.”
But he wasn’t really telling her that; he was telling himself that. This was more than a favor; it had been in a long time since it was.

Dean's POV:
Tired wasn't the word for what Dean was feeling throughout his whole body right now. There wasn't a spot on him that wasn't sore or didn't feel like he'd been nailed with a sledgehammer. He knew he'd be covered in bruises in the morning, and if he was already this sore, then by the time he woke up he was going to barely be able to walk in the morning at all.
He'd been in this shape before, it wasn't the first time some freak had kicked his ass. There were a lot more vamps in the coven than what they'd expected, and they'd almost got the jump on him. If Sammy wouldn't have shown up when he did, well...
Still, he was determined to not let it show just how bad he was hurting right now. Standing his aching body up as straight as possible he poured the last of the gas from the small can into the doorway of the house, struck the match, and tossed it inside before closing the front door. Torching the evidence was the fast way to go, and he needed this job to be over with so that he could get them back to the Lawrence before the soreness and stiffness won out over his own resolve, and they'd be stuck in this town for days.
"Come on Sam, get the lead out of your ass!" Dean yelled over his shoulder as he walked as straight as he could to the car.
Sam came trotting up to the passenger side of the impala, both men looking back at the burning house over before sliding in a shutting the door, pulling out of the driveway, and headed toward the city limits as fast as they could without getting caught. Dean was more than ready to put this little Podunk town behind him. Even though his body protested against him with every moment he was determined to make it back to Lawrence tonight, even if it killed him.
She would be waiting for him when came through those doors, and that's all he could think about. Getting back to her...
Your POV:
Sitting on the porch of the small house you'd been living in since moving to Lawrence Kansas, you held the cup of coffee that was steaming in your hands tighter to your chest like you could channel the warmth from the drink into your body to cut through the chilly night air.
It wasn't completely dark yet, just dusk.
You couldn't get used to this hunter life. When you meet dean, he'd told you he was just a traveling salesman selling health insurance. About a year into your very odd relationship though, he stumbled through the front door of your house bloody, and with a dislocated shoulder.
That's when you got the shock of your life.
You almost left him that night. It wasn't one of your proudest moments.
The shock of learning that all the shit that goes bump in the night is real and that your boyfriend hunts them and kills them, combined with the fact that he'd lied to you for over a fucking year and didn't open up to you about what he really was doing, laced with the, one day he may not come home, and it was almost too much for you to handle.
Even though you packed your bags you couldn't leave. You loved him too much.
So every time he'd disappear with his brother to work on another 'case' as he called them, you'd pace the front porch and check the phone every few minutes until you heard from him again. You never really relaxed until he was back in your arms. This was just something you were going to have to learn to live with. You loved him too much to walk away.
Your phone dinged in the pocket of your favorite, oversized, fluffy robe that you wore when you needed some sort of comfort, and Dean was unavailable.
Pulling it as quickly out of your pocket as you could you breathed a sigh of relief you didn't realize you were holding when the phone rang.
Dean: On my way home sweetheart. See you soon.
Dean's POV:
"Let me drive Dean so that you can get some rest.."
"No Sam, I'm fine! We only got about fifteen minutes and we'll be home. Why the hell would I pull over now?"
"Your hurting Dean, Let me drive you the rest of the way. I'll drop you off at the bunker, then I can go pick up Y/N if you want..."
"No Sam, now that's finale. I'm fine. I've had worse. I'm just a little sore, and ready to get out of this car. I'm not about to stop the car and prolong this trip any longer just so you can drive for the remainder of what's now probably only about a 13 minutes drive!"
Throwing his hands up in the air Sam gave up, and Dean breathes a sigh of relief. Well, the best he could anyway. He didn't know if it was the position he was sitting in, or if his ribs were broken, but about an hour into the drive they'd started screaming at him in an ugly way, and it started getting hard to hide the fact that he was so uncomfortable to his little brother who then became increasingly annoying as Dean's discomfort seemed to increase.
The last 15 minutes to the journey seemed to feel like 15 hours. Finally, Dean saw the bunker. Pulling the car in front of the door, throwing it in park he looked over at Sam, not saying anything, just giving him the look of 'get the fuck out of my car I want to go home to my girl,’ or at least he was hoping that was the look he was portraying, and he didn't just look constipated...
"You're not serious? Dean look at you, your basically panting in pain! You’re not really going to drop me off here, then drive to Y/N’s house!"
Dean said nothing, just continued staring, wishing he could reach across the seat and slap him, but his ribs protested too much. He was pretty sure his left ankle had been dislocated as well, so that ruled out leverage.
Sam shook his head and jerked the car door open. "You know I can go get her and bring her to you."
Dean said nothing, just threw the car in reverse and looked at Sam waiting for him to shut the door.
"I swear sometimes you're just like dad," he said, shutting the door like a little child, and stalking off toward the bunker.
He'd be fine. Elaine was waiting there for him, he didn't know that yet, but Dean saw the tail of her car parked just next to the garage, safely hidden in the bushes. She'd keep him company.
Dean knew that they had been secretly seeing each other for about a month now. They needed some time alone together. It was good for him. Even if for whatever reason he didn't want to tell him.
Getting back out on the main road Dean only had one goal in mind. Getting to his girl.
Your POV:
You'd been pacing the floor now for what felt like an absolute eternity. You were pretty sure this is what hell felt like even though you'd never been there. The time between knowing he was heading home, and hearing the sound of that impala he loved so much pull up in your driveway was the most agonizing part of waiting on Dean to return from a hunt.
Looking at the clock for what felt like the thousandth time your chest heavy with anxiety. You knew you could never ask him to hang up his hunting boots. He'd done too much good. Saved too many people. This is who he was, you knew that when you signed up to stay for this. Still, that didn't make it any easier.
Finally, when you thought you couldn't take another second you heard baby purring her way down your driveway.
"Thank God!"
You breathe the second sigh of relief that night. He was okay. He was home.
Pulling the door open you run out of the door of your little house as you see the door open on the impala. Dean didn't get out. Fuck.. Something was wrong. Running your way down the steps to the car your blood ran from your face as soon as you saw him.
He was beaten up worse than you'd ever seen him. He looked at you with one of his eyes almost swollen shut, holding his body at a strange angle, taking shallow breaths as he leaned against the steering wheel.
"Dean? Baby, what happened? Look at me!"
How the fuck he made it to your house form the bunker you'd never know. Sheer stubborn grit.
Rolling his head around, his eyes finally meet yours. He gave you a weak smile. Taking the last little bit of grit he had left in him to stand to his feet and lean outside the car, arms reaching for you instinctively. You didn't care that he was filthy, all that you cared about was that he was here, and he was safe.
"I probably need a bath," he mumbled as you lead him into the house.
Your neighbor was watering the bushes between your two houses, looked at Dean like he'd seen a ghost. Dean gave him the finger and you had to cover the laugh that crept up to your lips.
"Fucking nosy old man," he said as you reached the front door. "Do I look that rough?"
"Yeah babe, you look pretty bad."
You couldn't help laughing at his sarcastic bitchface that he gave you, or well the best one he could in his current state. As long as Dean had his wit you knew he would be fine.
----------------------------------------------------
Three hours later the two of you lay in bed, the room dark, all but the TV playing some stupid movie that you couldn't even remember the name of. Dean was sleeping peacefully with his head on your chest, and his arm and leg threw over you. You still were playing with his soft, freshly washed hair. Just enjoying the feeling of his body warming yours.
You were pretty sure his ribs were fractured, still, he wouldn't go to a hospital, saying he'd had worse, and he could just sleep it off. He was always stubborn to a fault, but he was yours, and nights like this, just the two of you, it made all the waiting and fear worth it. He was worth it. He'd always be worth it...

Skin Care Tips Derms Do Themselves
Pour on the Protection
To ensure she layers on enough sun block (" the best method to keep skin younger"), Garland, TX-based dermatologist Lisa Garner, MD, president of the Women's Dermatologic Society, fills the hollow of her palm (about 1/2 teaspoon) with a broad-spectrum sun block with SPF 30 or higher to coat her face, neck, and ears. "I typically need to apply two coats to complete what I've ejected, but that's how I ensure I'm covered."
Look Sun-Kissed
" A little tint takes years off your face by evening out your skin tone," which a current study found is a crucial marker of youthfulness, states Ranella Hirsch, MD, a skin specialist in Cambridge, MA. Her preferred for a natural look: Olay Complete Touch of Sun Daily UV Moisturizer + A Touch of Sunless Tanner ($ 15; drugstores), a cream with a low level of self-tanner.
Consume a Skin-Saving Breakfast
The very first meal of the day for New York City derm Doris Day, MD, consists of almonds. "They include necessary fatty acids, which assist put the brakes on inflammation that speeds up fine lines, drooping, and blotchiness." Not feeling like a nut? Salmon, tuna, and halibut are excellent lunch/dinner sources.
Spray Away Dryness
To keep her skin supple, LA-based derm Jessica Wu, MD, sprays it numerous times daily with La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water ($ 8.50; drugstores). (She typically spritzes her face when stuck in traffic!) Benefit: The water is loaded with minerals like selenium that secure versus UV damage.
Zen Your Skin
If anybody has stress, it's physicians. High levels of tension can spike hormone production that causes breakouts or intensifies conditions like psoriasis. "Controlling stress keeps your skin calm-- however that's easier said than done," states Annie Chiu, MD, a derm in LA. Taking a 10-minute time-out to use a face mask and unwind on her bed works for Chiu. Another trick: Ban the 'Berry. "I turn off my cell phone after 8 in the evening. Every little bit helps!" she says.
Secure with Powder
Sunscreen stops working in less than 3 hours, so reapplication is crucial, states Washington, DC-based derm Elizabeth Tanzi, MD. For simple touch-ups, she utilizes powder sunscreen. " The duplicated jarring of high-impact cardio like running can damage collagen and cause drooping," says Oakland, CA, skin specialist Katie Rodan, MD. "So until a 'face bra' is developed, I'll stick to cycling and the elliptical device."
Strike a Pose

"It pleases my cravings and my skin looks much better."
Cut Back on the Sweet Stuff
The breakdown of sugars, called glycation, harms the collagen that keeps skin smooth and firm. To avoid this natural procedure from careening out of control, Naila Malik, MD, a derm in Southlake, TX, adheres to low-glycemic carbs like entire grains; they're naturally low in sugar, and the body processes them gradually to restrict the loss of collagen.
Pump Iron to Plump Skin
" I am religious about strength-training, and I always inform patients to do it more as they grow older," says Patricia Farris, MD, a skin specialist in Metairie, LA. The reward: firmer skin from the neck down, the outcome of having better, more supportive muscle tone. "It's like adding volume to the confront with fillers, except on your body," states Farris.
Tea Up
In her teenagers, Amy Wechsler, MD, an NYC derm, began consuming green and black tea for the taste. Now she drinks three to five cups a day to safeguard her skin. Team Flash/Reader - Only When Chased - Part 1
Only When Chased
-A series of short silly fics in the life of a reluctant speedster-
Rated T for some swearing.
I’ve been sick the last few days, and this happened. I just really really liked the idea of a speedster muttering the last line of the fic. Everything else was just filler. Tentative plans to write more in this series. Possible relationship in the future. Everyone’s available! WHO KNOWS?
Timeline: Mid Season 1
Today's Random Reader Name is Nellie Ryan (or Nells).
The first time it happened, you were working at your friend's family-owned bookstore for the summer. You needed the money, she needed the help. Yeah, the two of you probably spent more time goofing off than actually working, but it was fun and relaxing.
You were stamping the inside covers of secondhand textbooks with the store logo when the unmistakable screeching of tires interrupted your 'Best of the 80's' station. As you looked up from the counter, the high-pitched squeal slowed until it was just a loud low hum.
“What the hell, Frannie?” You asked, glancing over to your friend. She didn't respond. In fact she didn't even move. You waved a hand in front of her face, but nothing seemed to register. With just a slight bit of panic you looked around and realized that all the customers were frozen in a similar state. Well, all two of them.
A flutter of fear wound it's way into your chest and you stumbled over to the window to look outside. No one was moving. You seemed to be the only one that was even aware of what was going on. It was still early in the day so not many people were on the street, but what really caught your attention was the light blue sedan that looked like it had just taken the corner at much too fast of a speed, and the young girl on the skateboard less than 10 feet in front of the car.
Not even sure what propelled you forward, you raced out of the bookstore and grabbed the kid, yanking her back onto the sidewalk and setting her down out of harm's way. There was a buzzing in your head and you backed up against the glass window of the store and put your hands over your ears. In a sudden rush and a flash of light, time seemed to catch up to you and suddenly things were happening.
A woman was screaming, the tires started squealing again. There was a sick crunch as the skateboard shattered under the weight of the car and then the car was gone and the few people out and about were crowding around the young girl trying to figure out what had happened.
In a haze you wandered back into the store where Frannie was staring at you in alarm and getting up from her stool. “Dude, I swear to god I was just talking to you and you were gone. What the hell? What's going on outside??”
“I don't know.” You mumbled, as the red-headed girl ran past you to see what the commotion outside was all about.
It was all Frannie could talk about for days, 'omg how weird was that?', 'y'know so many strange things around the city lately, like that red blur?'
You didn't know what to think about that. Frannie found a blog that had all these mentions of the red streak, but you didn't know how to tell her that whatever that thing was, it wasn't what had saved the girl outside the store.
The second time it happened was in the middle of karaoke night when a fight broke out between two young women who both wanted to sing the same Adele song. As time slowed once again, you looked past them to see the pretty blonde girl at the counter glancing over at the catfight, and the respectable looking man next to her dropping a small white tablet into her drink.
“Oh hell no.” You mumbled to yourself and walked over to the bar. The guy never even knew what hit him.
And so it went. You saw something going on, you tried to fix it. For the most part you were successful. You didn't really consider yourself a hero, although Frannie did as soon as you let her in on your little secret. She tried to come up with a superhero name for you, but you put a stop to it once she decided that “Streaker Girl” sounded great. You thought it sounded more like someone who got arrested at a 1987 World Series game.
The day things changed was the day you went into Jitters for a pre-sidewalk-book-sale caffeine pick me up. As you waited in line there was shouting, an angry man yelling at another equally angry man, and then suddenly there was a knife. With a roll of the eyes and groaning to yourself “It's not even 7:00am, assholes...”, you rubbed the side of your face in annoyance and made your way over to the men now frozen in place and pried the blade away from the larger of the two guys. “I just wanted a butterscotch latte, guys. One extra shot. Is that too much to ask?” You grumbled loudly and searched the men, confiscating two more knives and one small hammer. “What the hell?” You waved the hammer in the face of the guy with a dragon tattoo on the back of his head. “Why do you have this? Who brings a hammer to a knife fight, honestly? This is mine now.”
Slipping the weapons into your purse, you turned to make your way back to the line, pulling up short when you saw the man in the red suit watching you with a confused, but slightly amused smile on his face. He hadn't been there before.
“Hi?” You grimaced and hugged your purse a little tighter to your side. “I just... um... I didn't want them to hurt anyone?”
“You're the one I've been trying to find?” The way he said it, you weren't really sure if he was asking you, or himself.
“Um... okay?” You finally said, hoping maybe he'd just leave. If this guy was that red blur from the blog, and seriously how many guys in red suits could there possibly be wondering around the city, then he probably wasn't going to hurt you. He helped people.
“I mean... you're a speedster. You're the one who's been helping people over in the historic district.” He stepped toward you, hands up in a placating manner.
“I'm a what?” You were so confused. Speedster? No, time just slowed down around you sometimes.
“A speedster. Like me.” He seemed very sure of what he was talking about... but then again... skintight red suit and a mask... possibly not entirely stable. When Frannie suggested that you wear a mask and a costume you'd laughed for nearly a minute straight and then only stopped because you were having trouble breathing.
“I think you have me confused with someone else.”
“Okay.” He said decisively. “There's a lot to explain. Why don't you come with me?”
The man in red grabbed your hand and pulled you out of the coffee shop, moving so fast it made your head spin. It was all you could do to keep up, and you cried out sadly as Jitters quickly faded from sight “But my latte!”
-
“Um.... I was on a treadmill at the gym.” You thought back to the night S.T.A.R. Labs tried to wipe Central City off the face of the map. “I was trying to watch Dancing with the Stars, and some bitch on the elliptical kept trying to change it to House Hunters . Like, seriously? I was there first. And who the hell cares about housing prices in Kansas unless you're moving there? And by the way, that is NOT how you use an elliptical. Your ass does not need to sway that much. It's a cardio machine, not a stripper pole. And besides, Ricky is gay and he wasn't even looking in her direction so it was a waste of her ti-”
The man sitting in the wheelchair cleared his throat quietly and you stopped and glanced over. Of course you knew who Dr. Harrison Wells was; you'd have to have been living under a rock to not. The edges of his mouth were quirked up in a not-quite smile and he looked sort of like an exasperated adult trying not to lose his shit with a over-exuberant child. But hello, you'd just been basically kidnapped, albeit politely, and you were just a tad intimidated and nervous babbling was something you were amazing it.
“Sorry.” You continued, chagrined. “Um... the windows blew out, and I got zapped by the treadmill when the wave hit. It threw me halfway across the room and I woke up in the hospital two weeks later.”
“Only two weeks?” The man in red sounded surprised and he traded looks with Dr. Wells and the young woman standing next to him.
“Yeah, just enough time to miss my cousin's wedding, which was the whole reason I was at the gym. Trying to lose that last five pounds to fit into the bridesmaid dress.” You shrugged and bit your lip while idly playing with the sleeves of your shirt. “Look, I don't want to be rude, but how long is this going to take? I really need to text my friend and let her know how late I'm going to be for work...” Glancing at your watch you knew you still had almost an hour before the store opened for the day, but there was a lot of prep work you'd normally be helping with already.
The man in red had the decency to look abashed and he gave you a weak smile. “Oh yeah, sorry about just grabbing you like that.”
“Yes, and don't think we won't be having a discussion about that later.” Dr. Wells gave the masked man a meaningful look, then turned his gaze back to you. “Our apologies, Ms. Ryan. We'll try not to keep you very long. ”
The woman that had been introduced as Dr. Snow smiled and reached out to you. “I'd like to run some tests, if you don't mind. Just some blood work and a few other things. It shouldn't take more than an hour.”
“Yeah, okay.” You looked nervously between the three of them not really sure that you could say no. Wells nodded to Dr. Snow and she led you toward one of the smaller rooms off to the side.
“Oh, and I'll find you some clothes to change into before we test your speed. Running in a skirt isn't the easiest.” She smiled at you and gestured for you to sit up on the hospital style bed that you were suddenly very wary of. They wouldn't have it unless it got used, and why it got used you didn't want to know.
“I'm sorry, test my what?”
“Your speed. So we can get a baseline of your abilities. Don't worry it won't hurt. We'll just hook you up with some monitors, get you on the treadmill and then have you run as fast as you can.” She smiled and shrugged like it was no big deal.
...Running... on a treadmill... in front of everyone. “Is there any other way?” You asked.
“To test your speed?” Dr. Snow raised an eyebrow. “Not really. Is there a problem with that?”
You groaned and rubbed your face with one hand. “No... I just really really hate running...”
fini, for now
