Thirty years, huh?
That's quite a while.
I'll tell you what, though. I sure as heck ain't gonna celebrate by watching the remake that came out in 2019, because that was an offense on cinema as a whole.
Even the sequels and the spin-of series were better, and I didn't care much for those either!
Oof, sorry guys, I'm feeling a bit grouchy. My hips hurt and all that.

man if we're talking about hyenas. they were Baby's First Villain Fave for me (alongside the changelings from MLP FIM, who were also just trying to eat the abundance of food the heroes didn't want to share for some reason). i just remember being like wait. these people wouldnt have followed scar if they just. had enough food? seems like a very easy solution to me
MLP started airing when I was in college (insert gif of timelapse rapid-aging Matt Damon from Saving Private Ryan here), so I didn't really watch it and I'm not familiar with the changelings, but yeah like... watching TLK even as a little kid I was like, wait, these characters just want food? They're agreeing to follow the villain because they're hungry? That's not evil, that's just being desperate and not seeing a better way out of a bad situation. Like, dang. If my people were starving and a guy showed up promising he'd turn things around if we helped install him as king in place of the guy who beats us up every time we try to hunt on his land, I might go along with it too.
Apparently the live-action movie (which I probably won't watch) tries to "fix" this by making it clear the hyenas live in a barren wasteland because they overhunted, so really it's their own fault they're hungry, which is... a choice. In his review of the movie, Big Joel said something like (paraphrased because it's been a minute), "so they're evil because they're... bad at being animals?" which is a good way of phrasing it. It's one of those choices Disney has been consistently making in these live-action remakes where they try to fix a "problem" in the original movie by over-explaining it and just making things worse and dumber.

Oooo you know I was going to do some fan art this morning after the Mufasa trailer dropped!! Did this in pens and color pencil with a classic old school 90's feel.
The Lion King is my favorite movie and to have a new story come out is so excited to me!!! I'm going to review this first trailer.
First off one of the scenes I loved about the 2019 Lion King was Simba's mane in the wind. It really showed the spiritual side of the Circle of Life. Like there is some greater power at play. I get a big sent of that in Mufasa.
Second, if the music is anything like the trailer then I'm not worried about Lin-Manuel Miranda messing this up. Plus he did work with Elton John, Tim Rice, and it wouldn't be The Lion King without Lebo M. So I think we're in good hands.
Third, I love the flash back scene of the Battle of Pride rock. Clearly Timon and Pumbaa are fibbing to Kiara about them fighting Scar. I can't wait to see that!
Overall I'm excited. I loved The Lion King 2019 and the Broadway. I can't wait for more!!!

What’s always weird to me is when someone gets mad at a critic (or any blogger/vlogger/podcaster who talks about media for other people’s entertainment) for disliking media that’s popular and/or critically acclaimed. Like, they’re not just mad because the critic has an opinion that they think is stupid; they think that the media’s popularity proves that opinion wrong, or that the critic must be lying about their opinion for clout.
Which. I don’t know. It’s possible to be tiresomely contrary, but if you never dislike anything once it’s a popular or critical success, I think you’re just someone who doesn’t have your own opinions.

Seriously tho, this movie is really stupid.
There is a good idea in there somewhere, and the characters are likeable enough, but the tone of it goes all over the place. The constant flashbacks to the brothers' life ride that uncomfortable line between being cringe worthy and boring. The movie's namesake doesn't make a lot of sense either, and the acting is all over the place.
Had this been, say, a shorter movie or an animated movie, I would feel differently about it. But as it is, it's not a complete film.

Does anyone else remember this weird af movie??
I was randomly thinking of if id ever seen a feminine Giraffe character in media instead of the nerd guy trope(that’s so random??) and this movie hit me in the head like a brick bc this is the only thing I can remember seeing that has a feminine written giraffe in it
Tumblr media
Looking at this film poster again gives me such weird veitnam flashbacks cuz I remember liking the movie but also having zero idea what was going on.
I’m sure if I watched it now it’d still be just as much of a train wreck as I remember

I didn't hate Monkey Man, I LOVED IT!
Obviously, I don't want to spoil anything, go see it for yourself if you're interested. But it's like if Spider-Man, Dune, and Lion King had a baby, and John Wick adopted it and moved to India.
Okay slight spoiler below the break, just because it wasn't really advertised in the trailers:
Dev Patel said hell yeah to trans rights AND trans wrongs (when the DOOM music kicks in). I wonder if it is just a coincidence that Monkey Man released the same week as TDOV??
