The Kennedy Curse

It never seemed to fail that each one of them died tragically in some way. No one could explain the many deaths that seemed to happen at the hand of fate itself. It was as if something didn't want a natural death for them, but... maybe fate has other plans. Maybe fate knows something that faith doesn't.

My father died in a construction accident on the job. One of his friends had come to our house with the police, and all I remember was hearing my mother crying as I went to my room. I could hear her slamming her hands into the pillow before she came into my room to comfort me. I couldn't make heads or tails of the whole thing, he seemed... invincible. His uncle had died a similar way, falling off of scaffolding and landing among vehicles in a parking lot as a window washer. I was only 6.

We were outside playing when my youngest brother was shot. No one even saw what happened. A car had been passing by at the time, a 4-door sedan... so they ruled it a drive-by. There wasn't even a single casing to be found, which my mother later explained to me meant it could have been a revolver. I was 12, he was only 7. What made it hardest on my mother was that she had no one else to talk to, considering my father had passed Not 6 years earlier. It was just me and her at this point. Her sister had died of carbon monoxide poisoning a few years before, her mother had gotten into an accident a year earlier when her brakes didn't function properly (apparently she didn't keep up on maintenance.. something about a leak...), and even her parents died in their sleep together by mistaking each others' medication.

When I was 18, my mother eventually took her own life. I could never understand how it happened. She ended up taking my father's .38 Special and shooting herself while sitting in the Ford Taurus she had since I was 4. I remember my dad would take me to work with him in that car and we would sing with the tape deck blasting every song we could sing together, eating Bugles like potato claws.... he couldn't find me for hours when we got there. I guess I was a real explorer, pushing buttons, trying to figure out tools, things like that... Anyway... the strangest part was, they never found any of her fingerprints on the gun. She wasn't wearing gloves, she was never a criminal, didn't even have a parking ticket... so she still had her fingerprints. Her last words to me were "Faith... I'm sorry..."

... but I'm tired now. I'm going to take my medication and get some sleep. The walls in this room are so much softer than my bed at home. Or maybe I won't. Who knows? Maybe fate has other plans.

Maybe fate... knows something Faith doesn't.
