the last couple of years i've thrifted just about all my non-underwear clothes, but i needed a pair of black formal-looking trousers on short notice, so for "speed and efficiency's sake" (hah...), i decided to go to the mall just this once
JESUS the quality of fast fashion has PLUMMETED these last few years! of course it was always low-quality, but i was genuinely shocked that in five chain stores i couldn't find ONE pair of women's black trousers that a) were in a non-synthetic fabric, b) had enough fabric to not be see-through and have pockets, or c) weren't already fraying or had loosening stitches or buttons
the men's section at least had a couple of items in natural fibers (and thus i can hope they will hold up through at least one cycle of washing), but i still had to pick the one with the fewest loose threads sticking out
thrifting clothes is a bit of an ordeal (there are no secondhand stores nearby so i must plan a trip there; the assortment is random; browsing the racks requires more attention; often the clothes don't have sizing tags anymore) but GOD was trying to find something halfway wearable in a chain store a lot more work and WAY more depressing

The Great SCA Garage Sale is coming up (formally known as Kris Kinder) and I have pinky promised not to buy fabric at Kris Kinder. I already have a lot of fabric. In fact, I have donated quite a bit of my fabric stash (34 yards plus various fleece pieces barely made a dent) for the Barony's fundraiser at Kris Kinder. I have told the person driving me to Kris Kinder not to let me back into the car if I am carrying fabric I bought at Kris Kinder. I WILL NOT BUY FABRIC AT KRIS KINDER.
Anyway this past few days (not kris kinder) i got a pretty great haul of fabric.

Have I ranted to you lot about the person who was looking for donations of "cotton" (fabric)?
I'm like sure, I have lots of cotton fabric. What kind are you looking for? I have jersey, I have quilting cotton, etc.
Turns out that she didn't actually know much about fabric (good for her for taking on sewing projects like this anyhow), and as far as I can tell meant quilting cotton specifically. To quote: "I'm honestly not sure what you mean about woven - cotton fabrics are woven, I thought..."
And like, I get it. It's hard to learn that sort of thing. I've read multiple guides on different fabric types and still can't recognise most of them. And the fact that I'm embarrassed that I can't recognise what counts as a shirting-weight fabric, or that a fabric is chambray should help me have compassion for someone who didn't have enough, frankly rather esoteric, knowledge of fabric types to know what they didn't know.
But cotton. Have you never read the tag on a t-shirt and seen what percentage cotton it is? Of all the fibre/weave/fabric type mix ups, cotton?

Literally so disgusted at the clothing industry at the moment??? Pretty much every store that used to be affordable is asking insane prices for like???? Much cheaper, worse quality items???? Like why is everything at H&M for example 40/50€ for some fucking Polyester bullshit?????

@mayakern OK so I have a PLAN to write a nice and helpful review of your skirts, but I honestly have no idea if I'll actually be able to follow through anytime soon or if it'll just languish in my head for the rest of time, so this is a PLACEHOLDER nice and helpful review that just says HER SKIRTS ARE V. NICE, IF PLUS SIZE AND ON FENCE HIGHLY RECOMMEND DO BUY
#this is in fact me tricking myself into writing a helpful review#by putting the stuff in the tags#these skirts are a+++#i'd been looking at the sunflowers skirt longingly for months#and then it was on sale and i was everything is terrible i want cheerful sunflowers#and i got it#wore it#and immediately ran into the problem of wanting to wear it every day#(side note i now have purchased three additional skirts)#for the texture-sensitive people such as myself! important info:#material feels like bamboo cotton like you can get in sheets#so if you don't know what that feels like and if it's an ok texture you can go to a store that sells bed linens and find a sample#n.b. it's not exactly the same probably but it feels close enough for me#and i am . notoriously picky about textures#the skirts are full enough that even though the material is soft and light#it hangs heavily enough to not show off anything you're wearing underneath#and disguises that you've got stuff in your pockets#even if your pockets are FULL#(and these are BIG POCKETS)#the sizes overlap - I got the larger size of the ones i fit into#and i like the fit but did find that my pockets will start pulling them down a bit#which is less of a problem if both pockets are full#and more of a problem if it's just one pocket#so i have now ordered the size down as well#anyways yes highly recommend#yes expensive but also! not actually THAT expensive!#because this stuff is quality??#like i buy shit from torrid which is somewhat cheaper#but also will start falling apart within six months if not sooner#and i can tell that when it arrives because of the stitching etc

identifying textile fibres by touch is like a game to me now, i'm getting pretty good at guessing them. so i idly started feeling this one texture near my leg and i was like 'cotton for sure. but i don't remember wearing a cotton skirt today'
well yeah because the thing i was touching was my cotton top bedsheet. right textile wrong item
